Morbid - Which phone would you go with if there was no PH-2 in the works? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Which phone would you replace your PH-1 with?
I am curious about the Samsung 10 but I am just not a fan of anything that has a skin and "bloatware". That being said, my personal choice would be the Google Pixel 3 (XL or lite) or the OnePlus 6T. Without an immeadiate fix to my issue with the glass on the screen loosening, I think I would lean towards the Pixel 3 XL because of the battery life. I am not a fan of the size but the lite just seems to just miss the mark with the PH-1. I know it sounds crazy but the PH-1, I think, is the perfect size phone...for the most part. I think its a little too thick but other than that, perfect.

I agree about the size of the ph1. It's not thick though. In fact I could go for more battery and thiccness. It is a bit heavy.

All of the listed phones are much more expensive but - for me - no option to replace PH-1. What do they have what PH-1 doesn't have? Slightly better camera, maybe better screen, external SD card and wirelass charging. But PH-1 has - in my opinion - better size, design, material, software & updates, doesn't need an additional case and hardware is good enough for at least next 2 or 3 years. Maybe I'll use it until foldable phones have become mainstream.

Phones put me off for a number of years. $800 for a phone you can't even root! Looked at low price options and happened upon the PH-1 for $300. Id of paid full price had i known, best phone i've ever owned. Even made my wife an android convert. Makes me afraid to think about the day its too outdated.

I would consider a Pixel at this cheaper price
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-3-pixel-3-xl-google-store-discount/
Though Googles excessive data mining & privacy invasion is a severe drawback .... Chinese phones even worse so no way I'd get one of those (unless the CCP get kicked out). I was considering a Librem phone (though had second thoughts and didn't fund when I found some of the chips were Chinese company design)
see no 5

so for now it would still be the PH-1

I switched from my essential to the poco. You'd be surprised how good this phone is. The essential is a solid phone, no doubt about it, but im very pleased with the bigger screen, bigger battery, headphone jack(yay!) and a ton of rom support(bit of a flashaholic, ph1 is the only phone i didnt feel the need to flash other roms to). I miss the looks and comfort of the ph1, but im happy with my switch.

Not sure why the OnePlus 6T is not getting selected more. I would even say get the OnePlus 6 since it had a headphone jack and a real fingerprint sensor.

I went from Essential PH-1 to the Pixel 2XL. Much better all around phone. Not sure I'd buy a PH-2. The PH-1 was kind of a train wreck.

Some of the newer phones have a much better camera, stereo speakers and more water resistance (IP 67/68). Even my Nexus 5x took higher quality pictures than the PH-1. There was also the issue with poor cell reception on certain carriers.
Not needing a case isn't really a benefit of owning the PH-1. The materials are premium but it's not a scratch or shatter proof phone.

Seabro, I think going without case is a benefit to a lot of people that prefer not using a case. I would never go full nude with a phone and really enjoyed my Dbrand skin (even though their IG has an odd sense of humor) on my ph-1. I didn't get the ph-1 at launch and I think that's why we are differing on opinions.
- stereo speakers, i'd use my head phones.
- IP6x, Im not using my phone while taking a leak or swimming so not a need for me.
- the ph-1 camera at launch was terrible but they've come a long way and with the gcam mods, I loved using it as my daily shooter.
Different folks, different strokes.
I went with the Pixel 3XL and it came with the Incipio case and I have to say it pretty unbearable. I do not have large hands and this case made it unwieldy. I stuck with the case until my dbrand skin came in on order. I wanted to test the phone out with just the skin on it before I returned it to the carrier for a Pixel 3. I went with the XL mainly for the 3400maH battery.
Without the case, its a much better feel in the hand but definitely needs a skin. It's super slippery naked <insert side eye>. I think I am going to stick with it but there are some things that I need to look into. I really do not like the home screen or that fact that I can't get rid of the search bar at the bottom and the time/date/weather up top.
Wish I could have waited till the fall like a smart person but

Yeah, I did get my PH-1 shortly after launch and it was a mess. It took several months for Essential to provide a decent software experience. Even with all the issues and several warranty replacements, I stuck with the PH-1 until last March. The camera had improved but the color images were still inconsistent. Ended up needing a more reliable phone but II really liked the overall design, screen quality, in hand feel and size of the phone.
A nice skin like Dbrand or Slickwraps definitely feels better than most cases. It's a good option for those that rarely or never drop phones. Had a Dbrand on the PH-1 for the slippery back and using a Slickwraps on my 2 XL for some grip without adding any extra size.

Yeah I'm happy for you. The POCO phone doesn't work well in the USA (at least not consistently well. Some people have reported part time LTE on at&t but most that use Poco in the states are using it on 3g . This is definitely not an option for me. I might consider it as my next phone if it did work, but 3g in a country turning 5g would be a giant step backwards from the ph-1. I am also on Verizon (my carrier) and Poco phone doesn't work at all. All the same, enjoy your newish phone.

Plastic back slowly getting looser

So I've owned the tablet for over a week now. I like it. However the plastic backing around the microSD slot has slowly become loose and now holding the device feels like cheap plastic. I don't access the port at all, save the one time i put the sd card in.
Anyone else noticing this build issue?
I'd exchange it if it really bothers you. Mine is snug.

You're probably right. When I bought it, bestbuy had no covers. Now I guess more are getting released. did you get the official one or another? I do like the feature of the samsung one that will wakup the device when opening.

I got the official one. While it may not be worth $50 I like it well enough and it protects from the "everyday". I've never dropped a tablet so I'm not worried about drops.

The Samsung cover, does it stay closed on the screen just by weight, or do the magnets actually keep it closed?

I have same problem same area since day 1. Went to exchange, all sold oit! Other 2 problems are lightbleed and loose micro usb port.
maybe you provide us with an image to better describe the situation
Well. It is quite plasticy
I have mine over a week now, and haven't felt it loose. You should trade it mate. I like the bezel of the tab but the plastic is really annoying. There are quite a few cases out there though...

I got mine a few days ago and I must say I quite like it! The only build issue I have is a somewhat remarkable amount of light bleed along the bottom but it doesn't bother me enough to post a pic of it. Best buy only had one case that didn't look very good so I'm still sporting the protective back covering till more cases are in stock. I have high hopes for this!
I am on my 3rd Note trade in. It finally is not loose next to the sdcard. I told them I expect near Perfection if I Pay 400 for an 8 inch tablet!

It really should be of better build quality for $400. Or it should be at least $100 cheaper. I have the 10.1 and it feels OK, not terribly cheap but not of high quality. I will be putting it up on eBay and going to the 8.0 regardless, due to it being a more pragmatic size for my day to day use. I’m just waiting on the black version.
I had this problem as well. I replaced it at best buy and haven't had a problem with the new one.

Sure the build quality could be better but I haven't had a single issue with mine since I bought it on release day. From the reports here it seems like maybe some of them are not as solid as others.

Obviously they are not "all the same" since some owners are reporting here that there are no issues with theirs. I think most people are going to use some type of case with this, so IMO it's not too much of an issue. Of course I would like to see better build quality, but I don't think it's that bad. I agree that the plastic back is too shiny/greasy/slippery/nasty, but then again most people are going to put it in a case.
You can get a good sense of the build quality by checking out the display units at Best Buy (if you live in the U.S.). These things are handled by tons of people and kids each day who treat them with little respect because they don't have any personal investment in them. You can always tell which products on display have subpar build quality.
And Really? It was too thick for you? How much thinner do you want it? There won't be any room for the battery if it's thinner, or for the S-Pen silo/dock. I'd rather have a bit longer battery life and a secure place to store my S-pen rather than a thinner tablet. The weight, thickness, and balance in the hand are the best I have experienced in this general size.

Oooooooo magnets Are bad man. Not so much for regular phones but for phones with stylus and digitizer it will over time cause dead area s on your screen. Don't believe me ?
Head over to the note 2 forums and check out all the problems with cases involving magnet clasps. If got so bad the companies offered to replace your magnet sealing case with one with a simple button in stead. I had one and as soon as I put it on I started having problems with the area around that magnet.
Just stay away from magnetic cases period. Just trust me. Or mess up big time. Once that part of the screen gets borked its borked
That pic is the replacement one with the button they sent me. Also watch out for those magnetic kickstand cases. Big no no too those utilize neodymium!

Pissed off Verizon Customer

Alright so I am a pissed off Verizon customer and need someone to talk me off the ledge (Not really). I bought a Moto X Pure but decided to send it back for the Nexus 6p due to three factors: Better Camera, Better Software Support and weight/thinness of the device. I am a huge Cyanogenmod fan and I will only move away from my LG G4 to a device that supports Cyanogenmod. The Nexus 6p looks great on paper and in reviews, HOWEVER, this bending and glass breaking issue has me really concerned. I believe that Nexus 6p will be supported with Cyanogenmod better than the Moto. The Moto is now looking better due to being a little better build quality. All I want is Cyanogenmod with a phone on Verizon that takes great low light photos. Of course going back three models would suck but it would better than this piece of sh*t G4. Should I be that concerned about the quality issue with the 6p? Is there anyone else on Verizon that has Cyanogenmod that can vouch for another device that would work?
Mods please put this in QA. lol I doubt anyone will see it there but rules are rules.
Mine has been perfect so far. You shouldn't be that worried anyways. You can always RMA it if any problems arise. Google customer service is usually pretty good. If not you forgot about the Nexus 5X. Same Camera as the 6P. Lighter and also should have same amount of support for CyanogenMod.
It's all bs. Just buy it. It's solid and camera is great.

According to multiple tech sources they're the same. Can anyone verify? Maybe iFixIt
EDIT: Yea it's confirmed on iFixit that they indeed are the same cameras.
"This 12.3 MP camera features the same Sony*IMX377image sensor and ƒ/2.0 lens as found in the 5X, but thanks to the boost in processing power from the Snapdragon 810, the 6P can take advantage of an EIS (electronic image stabilization) algorithm, and shoot slow-mo video at up to 240 fps."

There's nothing wrong with the 6P, but I gotta ask, why do you want CM if you have stock android already?

Why not? Isn't that the point of Nexus? Options. ?
This device is solid. There's small defects with manufacturing like the screen but that's with any device.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Speaking of options. Any news on Paranoid Android? Is the team gone? They were my favorite roms on the Nexus 5.
So I pick up my wife's old LG G3 (At&t) running Cyanogenmod and it runs buttery smooth. I love the responsive animations to the settings options, color scheme, layout to boot animation. I like cyanogenmod because I don't have to mod my phone much after it's installed. In the past with roms I always seem to have to 'tweak' and 'retweak' things and I really don't want to spend time doing it. I like the constant updates/tweaks that the devs do. I also like the fact that I can submit bug reports and they seem to get fixed fairly fast. Cyanogenmod has filled the gap between Google's interpretation of a good phone and my interpretation.
How does this have anything with being a Verizon customer?
Exactly, my point. Not sure what the selection of phone has anything to do with Verizon

Verizon is locked down like crazy. I am stuck on Verizon due to where I live. I need comments from others that are on Verizon because they know exactly what I am talking about. lol
Adding in that most phones on Verizon are bootloader locked so right now the only options I have are Nexus or Moto X

I'm on Verizon. Got my 6P on Saturday (Which I received on Saturday thanks to winning the #WhyIXDA contest). The device is solid. The videos and forum posts talking about issues with the device had me concerned. But after popping in the SIM from my Verizon bought N6 I haven't looked back. It runs great and feels great. The phone actually fell once on my hardwood floor from a small coffee table and my heart sank. I picked it up and not even a scratch or blemish of any kind. It is the best unlocked device (and best device period IMHO) you will be able to get on Verizon.
Actually come to think of it though. The only issue I'm having is not receiving my Voicemail notifications. There is no Visual Voicemail app like there was on my N6, and the voicemail section in the Dialer app doesn't display any of my voicemails. I do however receive a text of random letters from Verizon whenever I get a voicemail, so for me, that serves as my notification. Minor annoyance at the worst for me.

Its pretty weird, because I do not have the same issue. I have my Nexus 6P on verizon as well. my only issue was that I was unable to use internet & phone at the same time. One call to Tech support and getting Advanced calling(Which is free) added to my corporate account, the issue has been resolved. I hate the fact that, I had to pay 15$ to get a Nano sim from verizon store.

I literally just had this happen on my 6P (visual voicemail texts). Go go your google voice page, at setup voicemail to go through your google voice. I have no idea how it works, but literally nothing has changed other than when I ring my phone now it picks up my google voicemail, and the messages then text (transcribed) and e-mail.
I was initially confused as it said it was going to use my google number, and it must be in some way, but it's seamless from the caller's side, and from mine. My verizon number still works exactly as you'd expect.

Don't do it man! Don't do it!!!!!
I had mine all of 10 minutes before it exploded. I swear they found a way to perma-coat the Nexus 6P in grease. It slid off a perfectly flat surface, and made a terrible screeching sound on the way down (which was much louder coming out of the top speaker), landed on a corner and BOOOOOOM!! Right before impact the camera glass shattered and the volume button swapped which side of the phone it was on. The resulting conflaguration was simply amazing. I caught the whole thing in slow-mo on my Nexus 5X. The cat will never be the same. Most of the fur should grow back though. Can't say the same for the burns in the padded carpet and hole in the concrete.

I caught the whole thing in slow-mo on my Nexus 5X. The cat will never be the same. Most of the fur should grow back though. Can't say the same for the burns in the padded carpet and hole in the concrete.

I have had my 6p for about a week. Just got the ota to the L build yesterday. I am using a thin silicone case and no screen protector yet. I am a commercial kitchen equipment repair guy, so I'm in hot, grimy, and hard situations all day long. My nexus had not bent, no scratches on the screen, fingerprint works even when my fingers are filthy.
Battery
Today, I took the phone off the charger at 5:30 am, and its 6:20 pm with 34% battery under heavy use.
Camera
For the first time ever, I was able to get quality pictures of my kids on stage during a chorus performance even hd video worked well.
I've tested every thing I can think of and its flawless and buttery.
Still on stock, but will probably go to custom rom.
I'm coming from note edge on Verizon with locked bootloader, and couldn't get a permanent root.
But I gotta say, I'm happy enough to stay stock with this phone.
I'm on Verizon and I love this phone. The bending and glass breakage rumors are false. I even dropped the phone twice before my case arrived (I got the Adopted protective case because the phone is slippery when naked), once on my hardwood floor and not a blemish, dent, scratch, nothing.
I'm a dog walker so the phone is in and out of my pocket all day long, lots of bending down and walking, and it's still perfect after 8 days of heavy use.
Got the ota update yesterday which made me very happy as a Verizon customer who is accustomed to never getting updates.

ZTE AXON 7 vs. Samsung S7 Edge

So I dropped my S7 edge and cracked the front glass. It's off for repair at a cost of £120 but I'm worried I'll just drop it again and wanted something with a less exposed screen. I'm tempted to buy a cheap phone but need one with a decent camera.
I've watched loads of YouTube vids comparing the two but just wondered what real life opinions were on here and whether anyone else has switched from the S7 edge to the Axon 7?
Sent from my SM-T715 using XDA-Developers mobile app
actually I did. I got the s7 edge but I was so fed up with samsung after the Note7 debacle that I decided to go for something different.
I liked the axon 7 design, speakers (great sound) and screen is a samsung screen. it also didnt suffer from lag and battery is fine. Issue for me was software. the email software wouldn't sync properly with my work exchange so I had to download a 3rd part email app, and IMHO, none are nearly as good as stock Samsung. Camera was the other issue, especially coming from Note7 and then S7 edge. its goodish in daylight but awful in low light. I mean sh*te. I even got the LG v20 and returned that as I still preferred the Axon ESPECIALLY because of the price.
however, I ultimately went to the dark side and got and iphone 7 plus, as it does everything I currently want perfectly. had the email worked I would have kept the Axon 7, and im still thinking to buy one for the fun of it (I keep checking availability on the best buy app and thinking to go get it) but that is because I am sick in the head from Phoneaddictitus, which causes me to be bored of every device within about a week. I mean, i have an iphone now so why am i still sticking around the Axon 7 forum???? [actually I can answer that - its because i'm hoping someone will sort out the camera so I have an excuse to get it again]
I miss Android, so as soon as the Note8 comes out, if it doesnt start smoking, I will get that.
Hope that helps.
It does. Thanks.
I've ordered it from Aliexpress but keep hovering over the cancel order button.
Sent from my SM-T715 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Requested to cancel. We've recently had a baby so I need a decent phone camera.
Really tempted but by the time I've sold my repaired S7 edge and possibly paid duty on the Axon, I'll be paying more for a worse camera.

I had the note 7 and went to this phone. Did not want s7 edge. This phone is awesome and great value.
Truth to be told, I do think most phones with equivalent specs to the Axon 7 perform better in low-light conditions than the Axon 7...
Apart from that, I think the camera in the Axon 7 is really good
But I do think pictures on those other devices might look better, I'm not sure if ZTE will give us the software updates that might make pictures look better.
As far as screen exposure and camera go, this is not the right phone for you. The camera is easily one of the worst out there as far as flagship level phones go, and the screen is curved; if it's dropped on the screen the bezel will not protect it, the screen will break. It's Gorilla Glass 4, not 5, it has very little as far as shatter resistance goes. You'd have to use the (grease-magnet) case included which covers the edges so if it falls flat the screen might not make contact. The front grills are not aluminium as everyone thinks, they're plastic and can easily scratch. The back camera lens is sapphire (don't know about front) so that thing will easily shatter as well, sapphire is super hard but also super brittle.
As a side note, if you're used to Samsung quality software you might get annoyed at the software quality of any ZTE phone. I upgraded from an S5 and I'm telling you I'm really displeased at ZTE's software quality, and overall lack of support in my opinion (I'm not here to have an argument or have a discussion about it). I'm so annoyed with the software that I'm unlikely to buy a ZTE phone again.
ZTE doesn't even come close to the S7 when it come to low light photos. I have S7 for work so I would know.

They already did two updates and not much improvement. Remember, it took Samsung YEARS to get it right. I don't think ZTE has the resource to improve it right now.

The ZTE camera isn't bad at all in low light but only if you aren't in a rush to take a picture. The 'default' settings are horrible for low light but if you use manual mode you can take some pretty decent pictures in low light. It just takes a little more time to "dial it in" so not a "point and shoot" in low light ... in good light tho .. its pretty nice with just point and shoot. LOL then again ... Im coming from a Galaxy S3 and never had a "flagship" so this camera is amazing compared to what I'm used to so I guess I'm not really qualified to say it's a good camera
OK, thanks guys. I really appreciate your help. The seller agreed to cancel my order so I'll wait a bit and see what else is out there. I was pretty swayed by the DAC but I guess the camera is more important to me. I'll just have to be a lot more careful till I move on.
On a side note, I have tried quite a few curved screen protectors but they were all awful plus on the day I broke it, I was off work and decided to let my phone have a day off too by letting it out of its silicon case.
Sent from my SM-T715 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've had the s7 edge. The only difference in camera is in the low light scenario. It just nowhere near to what it should be. Apart from that i don't think you'll be disappointed. There software is lacking a bit but most you can counter. I use nova for launcher Agnes am using outlook for the email app and syncing with exchange server and Ali other accounts is fine. The samsung email app is the best and i wait for the day it gets ported to this phone. Overall, you won't miss the s7 ... I'm confident in that.
And.... My boy dropped the phone for the first time last night on the pavement... Nothing happened. When i dropped the s7 edge it made a graze/scuff on the edge bit where it curves. I only ever have the S cases on my phone that protect the back and sides and don't use any screen protectors.
Sent from my ZTE A2017 using Tapatalk
Yep, I've got a few scuffs round the edges of my s7 now but only minor; doesn't help when selling it on though. The repair guys said the s7 edge was "nearly impossible" to repair - having watched the repair vids on YouTube, I wouldn't fancy it.

I really don't like the outlook email app as it's an all in one and it doesn't show the calendar and contacts in any other app so you can't use other widgets.
It's not brilliant, but it does sync the email and calendar... And that is at least enough for me to use it. Still...i like and look forward too the samsung email one day..

Definitely not.. I have the s7 edge aswell and I took video on both. The s7 edge murdered my axon 7 in a shootout. It's quite embarrassing when comparing to an s7 edge. But spot on with an iPhone 7 lol

I think samsung cameras went into a league of their own from the s6 edge onwards.... But it is spool reasonable. Just wish they'd employ some good software coders to get some better features and apps as standard.

What I hate about the Pixel 2 XL

Is Google turning into Apple?
Google is still doing carrier exclusive to Verizon just like Apple did with AT&T. Why!?
-Its 2017 and Google sure as hell doesn't need extra money from a carrier exclusive.
Google trolled Apple last year for no headphone jack. This year they followed in the footsteps of Apple by removing it? Why!?
-IP67 can still be done with a headphone jack. (Samsung etc..)
-Headphone jack sound can be improved with DAC (LG)
-The USB C can still be used for audio even with a headphone jack.
Google charges $200 more for a bigger screen? Apple charges $100 more for the bigger screen and better specs?
Google still doesn't have wireless charging but they did on the Nexus 6? (All the competition has wireless charging in 2017)
Google is playing the Apple game of endless adapters to do simple basic **** so they can pocket more money.
-$20 for USB-C to 3.5mm Jack (When you lose the included one)
-$44.95 for USB-C to 3.5 mm Adapter/Charger (So you can charge your phone and listen to music at the same time...)
-It's 2017 we should be moving away from adapters and cables not adding more.
Google only 4GB of RAM like really come on. At least bump it up for the Pixel 2 XL to help justify the $200 difference.
Google's camera sticks out on this version. Why?
Up to 7 hours of battery on 15 minutes of charging? Like what does that even mean? That's completely relative to the user. Why not say up to 70% in 15min or whatever.
Google why are you still using USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps) and not Gen 2(10Gbps)?
Using LG for the display is disappointing. I would have liked to see Samsung make the displays. Samsung makes the best displays on the market.
The Pixel 2 is a big improvement over the Pixel but still, falls short of the competition IMO. (Samsung, LG, OnePlus etc..)
I'm not saying the Pixel 2 is a bad phone. Its just targeted towards the type of people that buy iPhones.
I miss the phones targeted towards developers aka the Nexus line. Why not have a Nexus and Pixel line?
I'm still rocking the Nexus 6P. I couldn't justify the price for the Pixel XL and still have trouble justifying the price for the Pixel 2 XL
The lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack really rubs me the wrong way. Especially since they trolled Apple last year for not having one. Google fans went nuts over that and couldn't understand why Apple fans acted like it was no big deal. Now Google does the same thing and the majority of Google fans act like it's no big deal. Just shrugging it off. I have such a hard time supporting Google anymore. I've been a huge Google fan since the first Nexus device. I just feel so left behind now. My respect for Google is diminishing fast.
I realize that these are all nitpicking complaints but come on. With that price tag, everyone should really be nitpicking.
The lack of 3.5mm headphone jack has me on the fence. Every time I see an iPhone user walking around with the adapter to listen to music I laugh. It looks so damn goofy and awkward. Picturing myself with the adapter and my Bose headphones for the Pixel XL just makes me shake my head.
I can agree with you on some points.
Like why troll Apple and then follow in their footsteps with the headphone jack removal. I don't have an issue losing the jack I have an issue with trolling Apple then doing it like it isn't an issue.
The wireless charging is a nice feature I'm rocking on my note 8 but it isn't a necessity for me.
I'm curious to see the how the screen is but all the videos and hands on I've seen it looks pretty darn good.
The Nexus 6p was a great device but it's outdated now. I'm thrilled the front facing speakers come back and that camera bump is to house an amazing sensor. Just saw some of the samples and they are unreal!
They aren't making you spend the money just like the iPhone X but I'll gladly spend the $1000 over anything else on the market
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
If they were trying to emulate apple or even compete with them they would have a higher storage option than 128gb.
Hell even chinese phones have a 256gb option these days.
Google dropped the ball on storage options for sure.
And thats the only thing holding me back from getting one

Yeah, honestly that's the biggest reason why I think it bothers me so much. Just because they trolled Apple about it. If they would have made fun of themselves during the keynote about removing the 3.5mm headphone jack after last years troll. I would have really respected that but they just brushed it off. I'm not saying that LG will have a bad panel but I fear it will have some inconsistencies between devices. If I get the Pixel XL and the screen is not perfect. Then have to return it to Google to get another one that would really piss me off. Especially since Verizon users can just walk into the store and get a new one the same day if that's the case. LG has had issues in the past with producing consistent displays. Samsung just simply has the best displays.

A perfect phone never existed and never will be one in history
you have to know this for a fact
all phones have flows (expensive - cheap - heavy -big -small -skinny - old specs - etc )
and you have to decide what is the most important thing to you and go for it
for example, to me ( vanilla android - OS update very fast ) this is way i got my Nexus 6 before and the reason i order pixel 2
other factors are important but these 2 things are a most for me
And to some people if they removed a thing it will not affect them
like the Headphone jack, i have not used a wired headphones in 2 years (in my phone)
i went full Bluetooth, so removing it is sad but it will not affect me
i wish it has 6 gigs of ram though
and i wish a good nexus replacement show up in the future
If they are trying to copy Apple or create a premium handset, then why is wireless charging omitted from the Pixel 2? I did not understand why that option is not present, while ever other flagship smartphone has it.. I also cannot understand not adding an SDcard slot, well other then to force you to buy the 128GB model and charge a huge premium like Apple does.
Edit: I was also really considering a Samsung S8 or Note 8 but after getting burned with a S7 Edge this pushed me toward the pixel. My S7 display had the pink line issue with the screen and was 2 months out of warranty so Samsung wanted to charge $200 for a DEFECT in the device that many others had and no recall was done. This really pushed me away from Samsung. I also had issues with the LG G6 bootlooping in the past and why I tend to avoid LG going forward.
I think they (and every other manufacturer) try to make a decision based on their analysis of what gets them the best return. You (the general you, or we... whatever) need to make a decision about which manufacturer's decision best fits our personal desires. If you can find one that is a complete match... awesome!
I have no interest in SD cards or wireless charging. I was kind of sad when the front facing speakers went away for the Pixel XL, so I am thrilled that they're back. I use headphones regularly, but just bluetooth sets... so I am fine with the ditched jack. I have never had anything resembling lag or slowness, so the performance specs seem great.

Considered response to op's whining snowflake post but yours says it better!
They are not turning completely into Apple, they are just barely trying, come on I can buy an iPhones anywhere, with global warranty and more than 5+ years of software updates.
Pixels, on the other side, can only be purchased in 5 out of 195 countries no international shipping (they have a useless Google Store in more than 30 countries at the moment), no physical stores or pickup points for travellers, now they have 3 years of software updates (better than 2), and they mostly sell the pixels "on-demand". Stock never last etc. (Of course there are always stock problems, probably 50% of the Pixels purchased are sold at a much higher price to the rest of the world and with crappy warranty).
So, yes, Google is converting into Apple, but only in the bad sides of Apple. Apple has good sides (stock everywhere, warranty everywhere no matter where you purchased the phone, pickup locations, no inflated price, 5 years of software updates). I'd love to see google adopting these things from Apple, and not the bad things, like giving "exclusive" software features to Pixels (new iPhones) and separating the Pixels more and more from the AOSP.
Problem solved. Don't get one.
My dislike is much more trivial. I hate the uneven top and bottom bezels. I guess I'm a sucker for symmetry.
Still gonna be the best phone on the market along with the V30.
Sounds like you shouldn't get a Pixel 2 XL then. And by extension, you shouldn't clutter the forums with useless posts just to feed your inner drama queen.

Verizon has the Pixel2's in store on the floor

I just left the Verizon store in Sugar Land, they have Hands-On units to play with if you guys are interested.
What's your hands-on review?
I thought about going in to check one out. Then I decided not to torture myself like that. I gave up masochism years ago.
I played with one today for about 2 minutes in a store by my house and I liked it. It was noticeably snappier than my 6p and felt great in my hand. Didn't have time to mess with camera but I'm now even more excited to get my 2 xl in 2 weeks (or less)

As I walked into Verizon they were about to mount the pixel 2 xl so they let me play with it before they mounted and it felt really great in the hand, alot lighter than I anticipated, and the texture on the metal felt suprising premium, I thought it was going to feel like a cheap phone case

I'm an Android purist. I go through phones like nobody's business. Ive always kept a Nexus or Pixel, as phones get released, I pick one up. This year I've had the Pixel XL, all year, along with it I had iPhone 7+, G6, S8 plus, Note 8, V30, in that order, as they are released. Before that, rinse and repeat.
I say this to express that the V30 is by far the hardest to leave behind, I may not. It's sleek, fast and checks ALL of the boxes, except Pure Android, and dual speakers.
The pixel misses, the wireless charging, and expandable storage.
The killer feature I was going to pass on the Pixel for is the 71 band for TMobile, but sadly it a year and a half from being deployed in my area.
You will not go won't with the V30. It is awesome! Best phone I've used to date... And that's AALLLL of them worth checking out.
But the speakers man, the speakers. The pure Android experience... Ridiculously pleasant to use for me.
Got my hands on one today as well

I went to the store today and tried to enable developer options, the Verizon store sample did not allow me to do it. I went to about phone and clicked on everything 8+ times and nothing happened. I have used a stock phone in a while, so unless it was move I couldn't do it.
I spent a little more time with both phones. The 2xl feels very good in the hand imo. I also like the regular pixel 2. To me that felt more comfortable in the hand because it was smaller.
The screen on the 2xl is good. I liked the feel better than my S8+. Because the 2xl is a little wider and has a more solid feel on the sides it felt better than my Samsung. I have good size hands, I can palm a basketball, and on the 2xl my inner thumb or palm doesn't touch the curved screen. On my S8+ my inner hand meat can touch the screen when I reach across with my thumb.
Here are some photos of the 2xl and side by side with a screen burned Pixel XL
I also made sure the brightness was a 50% for both phones. You can see the POLED screen looks brighter.
XL2 Screen looks great, and those bezels look so much better!

I went back today and enabled developers options. And the bootloader is definitely locked. So glad I ordered mine from Google and completely unlocked. I spent more time with it today and it's a terrific phone. Snappy and the screen looked great. Brightness was all the way up and I didn't try to make any adjustments. Phone feels good and looks good. I understand why some people prefer the LG v30 and it's a great alternative but I think the 2 xl will make plenty of people happy.

I tested it out today as well and didn't get a "plastic-feeling" phone. The metal had a grainy texture to it and felt quite nice. I tested the XL since that's what I ordered. Didn't bother with the regular one. People said there was a "coating" on the metal, but I didn't seem to notice one like on the G5. That one felt like it had a clear rubber case on the metal.
Thanks for those pics @Bxrider117
Had to go the upsstore today and the verizon next door on Tyvola Rd on my side of Charlotte did not have them in. Told the nicer of the two guys I was interested in seeing the poled screen, explained how I'd heard on xda of the banding and not good quality in the other thread. One guy swooped in on me telling me how I could know or even say that for a phone that hasn't been released yet! I told him that the good verizon stores had demos. What a dummy, HIS store is supposed to have them but they said the google rep could not get any for them.

Your pics do give me some assurance that I won't have to send my blk64g 2xl back when it gets here!
