Man do I love my N4 purchase more and moreeveryday xD... pay $350 for the highest performing Android on the market, and it comes unlocked, has an LTE radio hidden in there, and now this as an added perk.
Life's good, LG ain't kidding c;

Pretty cool that they made a quick port. Hope it is good quality too. At least it doesn't seem to be that hard to port it to another phone. Just a few weeks ago the official statement was Galaxy Nexus GSM only. But the N4 is pretty open on the other hand that helps a lot.

Re: Ubuntu Image Release Feb 21st!
Amazing. Can't wait to flash this to my gnex. Thanks for sharing.
<maguro>

Looking forward to it. Although I think I'm going to wait to see what people say about it before installing it. I've already seen a few places where it says that it isn't really a daily driver (although I wan't expecting any different at this point).

Saw earlier today on G+. So hyped.
Tapatalked with Maguro unicorn swag.

Android Central...
I heard it from Canonical first, here's the original announcement.
I'm very excited about this, I can't wait to be running Ubuntu. I'm trying to make some apps for it, practicing with Qt Creator and the Ubuntu SDK.

Wow, the UX looks so shiny! I cant wait for this thing to come out. With any luck the shell will be 1000x more responsive than desktop unity.
Too bad I have to wait for a Galaxy S3 port, or maybe I could just port it myself.

While I can appreciate the reduced-data-mining available from a vanilla android, the lack of an SD card and removable battery defy all common sense. When I look at an N4, I see wonderful capabilities -- but I also see an extreme example of a "throw away" phone.
I can't wait to load Linux on my galaxy S2.....

Re: Ubuntu Image Release Feb 21st!
Trust me this makes up for everything!
And honestly some people don't use as much space (like me).

I use 2 GB of the 16 on my GNEX. I must be doing something wrong.
It's natural that Phones are build with the Cloud in mind these days.
There is no need for 100 GB of space on a phone.

woow! now I'm having second thought of buying that 2nd hand nexus I found yesterday..

The obvious solution is just plan your playlists in advance. I never fill up 16gb with music because if I want something different I just copy it over at night and erase what I'm not listening to.

I am really excited that we are already seeing Ubuntu on any phone!!! I have been waiting for this for quite a while. Congratulations to all involved!

I really don't see the switch from Android making sense unless a bunch of apps were developed for Ubuntu, then maybe, but that is a long time off. However, I am very interested in “Ubuntu for Android”, where I could run both Android and Ubuntu and have full access to the Ubuntu command line set via a terminal on the phone; I wouldn't even care about docking, although that would be a nice benefit.

Sv: Ubuntu Image Release Feb 21st!
Nice for my Gn/N4, now they just hide in the box but guess it will change soon. Will be sweet have ubuntu on the side trying it out ..

Who's getting a Nexus 7 from the shift community?

So as many of you might know the nexus 7 is now available for pre-order. I just ordered mine. Since it's a Nexus device all future firmware updates will be straight from Google and in a timely manner. There will also be a ton of dev support being a nexus device there will be a lot of amazing devs working on root, recoveries and such things. So again I ask, who plans on getting one?

Thanks I needed a new avatar and I like star wars lol.
Wait for the 10.1" screen? IDK personally I think larger screen=more battery drain so I'll be happy with the smaller screen and cheaper device. I can't afford these expensive tablets.

You do realize that a 10.1" screen is going to be more expensive right? Not sure what you mean by an actual tablet when the only difference if going to be the screen size. I like the size I don't want something too big or too expensive. You could sell your nook and afford the nexus now lol. To each their own.
I'm running ICS on the 7 inch kindle fire and the size on that is what's stopped me from getting the nexus 7... tho jellybean is really tempting...
Sent from my HTC Evo Shift using xda premium
Yeah I'm well aware of the screen size lol. My father has a Kindle Fire (told me not to root it the first time I saw it) and the size is fine with me. But yeah the quad core with android 4.1 for $200 is what sold me.
I had the HTC flyer for about a week before returning seeing as I used the money on a tv and Google tv but I live 7.1 screen size. For me its not too big and not too small, granted I'm not the biggest guy around lol. It fits comfortably in two hands without having to really stretch out your fingers to type. Personal opinion in the whole 7.1 vs 10.1 inch

It all comes down to personal preference. If they came out with a 10 inch one, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Currently thinking about getting the Transformer Pad Infinity... but man does technology move too fast... i hate getting something and finding out 2 days later that a newer faster one is out in a couple months for the same price haha
Im sure the nexus 7 is gonna be a beast though. Quad core + project butter... dammit google give me a 10 inch nexus!
OP Update
As the First post says being this is a nexus device it already has a great start to development
Root, recovery, roms, even a kernel source with the config :good:

[Q] CM10 for the Nexus 7?

Is this something that may happen quickly for the N7 as it is stock android, or will the devs need to spend a fair amount of effort prepping it for the N7?

CM10 should already compile for the N7 as because it is a Nexus device the vendor (the files used to configure the build) are released in AOSP. See https://android.googlesource.com/device/asus/grouper

I thought that may be the case, but that level of detail is not in my wheelhouse, so thanks for the info!
I wonder how long it will take an enterprising dev to start the "***OFFICIAL*** CM10 For the Nexus 7" thread in the dev forum
I have no doubt I could compile CM10 as it is for the Nexus 7, I don't see any point yet though, there are next to no changes.
Ahh... cool. I have not even messed around with cm9 yet because a full version of it is not supported for my device. I was a big fan of CM7.2 when I was running the RC though.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question - it's cool when the devs help folks like me out with the easy questions
Cyanogen 10 NIGHTLIES should begin soon.
As far as a release candidate or final, there is absolutely no way to tell but i can pretty much guarantee you looking from CM7 and CM9 that your looking at at least 2-3 months.
ICS was released last November and CM9 has not even hit release candidate yet.

CM9 has hit RC1 . Apparently, it's going to take less time to get things rolling from ICS -> JB as there aren't that many BIG platform changes unlike GB -> ICS.
Looking forward to CM10 or AOKP!
This is what I'm waiting in for. Does anyone know if someone has committed to being the Cm dev for the n7? And if so, I who is it?
A lot of the work of being a 'dev' for a certain device isn't really needed with a Nexus device since Google provides most of the bits that make it difficult to make a custom ROM without.
Also, quite a few devs were at IO and received a free Nexus 7, so I really don't think we're going to be short of devs wanting to get CM working on the device!
yes, but my question is if anyone has stepped up yet. Is there a device maintainer? I'm actually pretty surprised that there isn't a cm10 build floating around for this yet....
Well, it sure looks like someone has stepped up to the plate. I wonder what the next steps are?

So funny story. Right after I got done adding some files to support CM10. I took my Nexus 7 over to my nephews birthday party. I set it down for a second on a table. My sisters dog than ran into it and the N7 took a fall to the patio.
What only looked like a small crack on the screen and the display works fine. The trouble came when I tried to unlock my tablet. The touchscreen no longer works.
So my plee to anyone out there. I am looking for a new N7. I would buy it from Google but they are 3-4 weeks out on shipping the next round. If anyone bought two, or knows of any other stores that may have one in stock let me know. I don't want to be out of the game that long!

That's nemith and he maintained the Nook Color for awhile. Still works with our current maintainer fattire, and those guys are the best.
For real, for real.
I would love to see either of those gentlemen be active in this forum. I still spend more time on the Nook forum than here, and I haven't even turned that device on since the Nexus 7 arrived.
Which makes me feel totally guilty. Something is very wrong with me.

This is the way it is in 4.2 onward. Google is unifying the look so it functions the same no matter what screen size (like everyone's favorite fruity rounded rectangles). It's Matias Duarte's vision for the UI. Personally, I have no real issues with it, and I'm sure CM or AOKP will bring back the old functionality.
I read somewhere that android 4.2 changes something in the render script. I know that this changes somehow the performance of 3d, does someone knows if this can relate to our egl leak? If yes, how does it affect performance and the random reboots we have been having?
Thank you for the efford random blame, as always I love your work, and I would donate if my stupid wall art debit card would play well with PayPal. As soon as I get another debit card you and the amazing quarx are going to have a beer from me.

[Q] LG Nexus 4 experience on Samsung Galaxy S4

Dear all,
a big fan of XDA, and feel a bit weird asking this question in here, as I feel sure thousands of others must have asked it - but I can't find a direct answer anywhere. So here goes;
I love my LG Nexus 4, especially the pure Android feel. But it has problems, though, with switching off or stalling suddenly (often during heat/cold, I've noticed), after which I have to reboot - that's described elsewhere, I believe, and not my real question.
I have now put my hands on a Galaxy S4 (I9500UBUAMDK) and made my way through my first root and install of a custom ROM (Wanam Lite). It took a while, but now works.
The feel, though, is not pure Android, as I'm used to it from the LG Nexus 4. I assume that's because it hasn't been possible to fully recreate that ROM, either because it's not possible on Samsung or because the new announced Galaxy Nexus is not yet out and broken. Is that correct, or have I just not been able to find the right custom ROM ?
quote Techhive.com article
Unfortunately, the Galaxy S4 is so new that there aren't a lot great options for the pure Google experience yet. Even the popular CyanogenMod, which is closer to stock than Samsung's TouchWiz software, is still a work in progress. The situation may change once the stock Android Galaxy S4 starts shipping.
unquote
If I am right - is it then expected that the Galaxy Nexus will be broken/rooted, and any idea how long that will take ?
Once that happens, and given that the Galaxy Nexus will only ship to the US, is it expected that my I9500 will be able to use those ROMs ?
Lots of questions, but assume for the pros, they should be fairly straight-forward. I may in the end just have to stick with my beloved Nexus 4, but if I could get the snappier Galaxy processor, I wouldn't mind it.
Apologies if I have overlooked any obvious threads with answers to the above.
Regards - Simon
If you want better CPU why dont you wait until Nexus 5 or any phone with snapdragon 800 inside?
Ex. Galaxy S4 advance, Xperia Z-ultra...

Once the Galaxy S4 GE edition comes out it will help the snapdragon version fo the device alot. There will still be issues that cant be resolved with the Exynos devices but that always been and always will be the case due to samsung lieing to the developers about releasing the proper documentation for that chip. But even then you will lose all the extra sensors in the S4,
Hi overdose1986, zelendel,
thank you for that - I guess that answers my questions in the sense that it is NOT possible to port the full Nexus experience to GS4 right now, and likely won't be for a while, even when the GS4 Nexus comes out, right ?
I likely will wait for the Nexus 5, but that's only slated until late this year or even next year, isn't it ?

That's about right, if Samsung's past track record is anything to go by. As always, nothing is definitive. IMO, if you were able to get an I9505 over an I9500, it would have helped your cause a lot more. As for the next Nexus, if Google follows their yearly update pattern, it should be out by the year end.
It's not a Nexus.. It's simply a Google Experience device. A Nexus will not have hardware buttons or removable storage. Oh and the Galaxy Nexus was Google's reference device from end of 2011.

New tablet after a Nexus 7? Here is a worthy successor!

Lenovo Tab 4 Plus
http://www.gsmarena.com/lenovo_tab_4_8_plus-8603.php
It's slightly bigger than the Nexus 7, but not so much by comparison, as you can see here from a side by side:

Better specs, clean Android, beautiful screen and very, very well made hardware, with the additional Plus of having an SD-card slot. By now I am on my 4th Nexus 7, which I mainly use use for eBook reading and some casual gaming, but the problems with the USB slot and the easily defective memory are a nuisance and I have been on the market for an alternative for more than 3 years. The Tab 4 for me is that alternative.
I've had it for a couple of days now and while it is not wildly popular (yet), there is already TWRP available AND root through Magisk.
Finally a decent tablet with USB-C, nice hardware, very good screen time (basically sames as the Nexus 7) and an up to date Android version without significant bloatware (Except for Microsoft Office, which you can uninstall easily, since it's not a system app).
I hope to see a thriving community around this tablet; it's worth it and will please those who have been happy with their Nexus 7, but are looking for a more modern piece of hardware as a successor.
Lucky me I am still on the first one from day one ?
Just have to charge wireless since 6 month. Bud there is no factory Image coming so as long as custums are coming I am good to go. But the Lenovo looks promising
nvidia shield tablet....best
So this runs stock Android? If so, may be my next tablet.

I think 2gb is enough for games
AGREED!!!
When i first saw this, i thought, this is the only upgrade to my 4 year old nexus 7....but sadly lenovo did not launch the 4/64 version in India....i don't know what to buy now..iPad looks like the only choice
I'd suggest the Huawei T2 7.0 Pro. I have both it and the Nexus 7. The Huawei is lighter, smaller, better battery, slightly better CPU/GPU, Micro SD slot, fingerprint sensor.
Oh and it can take a micro sim and be used as a cell phone.
The only negatives:
Only works on 2.4ghz wifi
Android 5.01 only currently
No NFC
No wireless charging
Otherwise it is a worthy successor. There are tons of 8" tablets available but for sheer portability (and why the nexus 7 was so popular in the first place), the T2 is a viable option.
Huawei also had the Media Pad X2 7.0 which has far superior hardware but I have been unable to find one to purchase anywhere.
I also used the Nexus 7 primarily as an E-Reader (I have had it with junk E-Ink devices, kobo and kindle are garbage)
but my Nexus 7 has a stuck reboot loop issue if it powers down.

Not only that, it's also got Micro-USB, not USB-C. Deal breaker.
Same goes for the Huawei, Micro USB.
The Lenovo is also availble in an LTE version. I don't need that, got a nice phone with an international contract as hotspot, so no more additional contracts for me, WiFi does the job for me.
The Lenovo does look like a solid device. For me the size though is a no go. Plus I have not seen it for sale anywhere in Canada. No clue what the supposed release date is.
What about superfish?
What tablets run stock Android or very close to? I want a tablet that will get new major Android releases.

Pretty much only the Nexus 7 is stock.
That doesn't seem to matter though. Google discontinued updates on the Nexus 7 after Android 6.0.1.
Agree, and I see no sign of them releasing a new tablet anytime soon.

Ya, I gave up waiting. Hence the Huawei that I have been using.
I just pulled mine out of the closet to check for updates and can't believe it still has a better screen then these Xiaomi phones I keep buying.

As bad as it's going to sound. I'm glad Apple is finally in the wireless charging game. Ya know they're likely to drop an iPad with it soon, and this may inspire the creation of other wireless charging tablets. It's really the only thing holding me back from replacing the Nexus 7 2013.
Mi max 2 ... Snapdragon...big battery..usb-c....not expensive
Minecraft story mode 2 is playable
