Who's getting a Nexus 7 from the shift community? - EVO Shift 4G General

So as many of you might know the nexus 7 is now available for pre-order. I just ordered mine. Since it's a Nexus device all future firmware updates will be straight from Google and in a timely manner. There will also be a ton of dev support being a nexus device there will be a lot of amazing devs working on root, recoveries and such things. So again I ask, who plans on getting one?

Thanks I needed a new avatar and I like star wars lol.
Wait for the 10.1" screen? IDK personally I think larger screen=more battery drain so I'll be happy with the smaller screen and cheaper device. I can't afford these expensive tablets.

You do realize that a 10.1" screen is going to be more expensive right? Not sure what you mean by an actual tablet when the only difference if going to be the screen size. I like the size I don't want something too big or too expensive. You could sell your nook and afford the nexus now lol. To each their own.

I'm running ICS on the 7 inch kindle fire and the size on that is what's stopped me from getting the nexus 7... tho jellybean is really tempting...
Sent from my HTC Evo Shift using xda premium

Yeah I'm well aware of the screen size lol. My father has a Kindle Fire (told me not to root it the first time I saw it) and the size is fine with me. But yeah the quad core with android 4.1 for $200 is what sold me.

I had the HTC flyer for about a week before returning seeing as I used the money on a tv and Google tv but I live 7.1 screen size. For me its not too big and not too small, granted I'm not the biggest guy around lol. It fits comfortably in two hands without having to really stretch out your fingers to type. Personal opinion in the whole 7.1 vs 10.1 inch

It all comes down to personal preference. If they came out with a 10 inch one, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Currently thinking about getting the Transformer Pad Infinity... but man does technology move too fast... i hate getting something and finding out 2 days later that a newer faster one is out in a couple months for the same price haha
Im sure the nexus 7 is gonna be a beast though. Quad core + project butter... dammit google give me a 10 inch nexus!

OP Update
As the First post says being this is a nexus device it already has a great start to development
Root, recovery, roms, even a kernel source with the config :good:

I saw the Nexus Two being an HTC Device, with things like;
4 to 4.3 Inch Super AMOLED Display(Or possibly even Retina?)
1Ghz Dual Core Processor
16GB ROM
1GB RAM
3-5MP Front Facing Camera
5-8MP Back Camera
I recall Google stating that the Nexus One was a phone to revolutionize devices. Thats what it did, when the Nexus One launched it had the largest screen, and the fastest processor in any phone to that date. Where is that with the Nexus Two?!
They needed a story, even if the facts are incorrect.
That cant be the Nexus Two.
I'd rather have a MyTouch 4G.

My thoughts exactly. After one day with an N1, I realized just how nice life was away from any Samsung POSI. 6 months later, not one SINGLE complaint. This thing is perfect, and could only improve with next year's technology (screensize/processer etc) today. A Galaxy S model phone, which was available in July would a sick joke.
Desire HD+Duel Processor+Front Camera=Perfect. But I still like the trackball.
Didn't engadget just say that that is a gizmodo mock up?
IMO, this article is sooo full of crap.

How can samsung call the piece of **** a nexus cause doesnt htc own the nexus name? They made the nexus one. I hope to God this isnt true. I will never own a samsung again
not going to argue with samsung using the best hardware but damn do they love apple's designs or something.
I can't stand that they make the design look like an iphone and touchwiz makes it more like an iphone.
if nexus two looks anything like this, even if it is vanilla android, i'm saving my money for a better looking vanilla android phone.
Can't wait for Nexus Three. lol
I doubt this is real, anyway--a Nexus Two should be, just as the N1 was, ahead of the herd. Certainly not a refresh of an existing model. No way.
Dual-core, Tegra 2 chip, brushed metal unibody, or get the **** out.

I admit, it looks really nice.
But I can't think of a single purpose where it would serve me any better than my phone would. It's only slightly less of a hassle to carry around than a laptop.. and a laptop can do much more.
I honestly don't get the craze.
I'll also admit that it looks really nice but the fact that it's a Samsung product makes me very reluctant to buy one. I wonder how well they will support and update it.
it has nothing to so with quality smh... Tvs don't receive updates and the fact that you didn't have an Android smartphone that received frequent updates nullifies your statement, I'd you were an epic owner your response would be different, my other point is that this thing does everything a smartphone can do basically, there are not that many apps optimized for the tablet. Android only released the sdk for honeycomb like a week or two ago, right now it has potential but that's about it

i dont have a laptop, but i love my ipad. with it having gone out of date just last week, i already am skimming the market for a tablet. i like having an android and ios device, but that samsung tablet looks sooooooo nice.... i'll probably keep my perfectly good ipad around for another couple of years, but still its always fun to look for upgrades...
i use my ipad as a laptop. i do homework on it and stuff. even compiled a powerpoint on it for a science project. but it has many shortcomings that android doesnt have. the problem with android is google mostly only makes apps centered around itself like gmail, google goggles, all search email and youtube stuff. only apple makes the slideshow, word, and all the other fantastic apps i rely on heavily on an almost daily basis. android doesnt have that yet.
also, nobody can say games on android are better than ios. nobody. mirror's edge, which came out with the ipad i think, is still better than any xoom game... and infinity blade has me totally addicted...
for now, apple has it right. the tables may turn soon, but if you are thinking about buying a tablet, i'd go with the ipad 2.
btw i'm not going to upgrade to the 2. cameras are worse than my evo's. why use that? only good thing is dual core. yes, slim and smart cover is nice, but not enough to upgrade when all i baisically use the ipad for is work in and out of school.

[Q] Is the Nexus 7 worth to buy now?

I am considering buying a nexus 7 16gb, is it worth the 314 AUD price tag? What do you guys think from your experiences? Thanks
Xxx oops! accidentally beamed from my awesome NEXUS S! xxX
Yes ! It is an amazing tablet and the first one born with Android Jelly Bean 4.1. It has a really powerful processor (NVidia Tegra 3 Quad Core (x4) 1.3GHz.). The size is really awesome, you can hold it fine with one hand. It is really smooth and fast. Worth to buy
It's absolutely worth it, get it right now. This device really is great, you've waited too long already.

If you love your Nexus S's Android OS, the Nexus 7 will not disappoint.
You really cannot go wrong with the price. I mean 250$ is dirt cheap. Especially for a Tegra 3 and 1GB of RAM. Really enjoying mine so far and I have an iPhone 4S and new iPad as well. Android has a special place in my heart for tinkering and this tablet is totally fulfilling that niche .

Totally worth it, I have a feeling development has only just started I have never owned a nexus device previous to this
It has replaced my phone for everything but calls and texts, other than when I don't have it of course
I think the size is perfect as the ipad IMO is too big and heavy, 7 inch is perfect size
I bought mine on release weekend at jbhifi for $317, best choice
Buy it from a store so if you have problems, you can take it back like I did.

OP: we can't really answer that (at least, not without information on your preferences). You should youtube the n7 in action and see if it seems to fit your needs.
The nexus 7 is very worth it. Your might have to return it a couple times if it has the defects like screen lift, light bleed, etc.
I doubt the iPad mini will be around 300 dollars, as the ipod touch costs 300 and is less than half the size.
If i were you, I would buy it!
I bought one yesterday and it's well worth it. Mine was built in August and doesn't seem to have any screen or multi-touch problems that others do.
Tapatalk made me send this.
I've had mine for a while and even with a little screen lift on the left hand side, I'd buy it all over again.
If you have the option, purchase an extended warranty that covers screen damage. That extra insurrance never hurt.
I'd buy that for any tab I'd purchase.
Buy it...you won't regret it. Your significant other may though. I think my girl is going to break mine if I don't put it down. Lolzzz

Sadly, I had to return it today.
I loved it with all my heart but I barely used it and that didn't justify $426.
Maybe i'll try again next year.

(I'll be at the Nexus 6 forum )
Applied for a return too. Loved the design and the hardware, but in actual use it does not justify the price tag.
Maybe I would have kept it if it was like $299, but converted to US dollars I paid around $500 for the 16GB in my current country. Not worth it by a longshot.
I returned mine. To HTC to fix the buttons and the light bleed issues. I was able to get the the 32GB version for 399 with 429 dollar price match at best buy from amazon, and 30 dollars worth of best buy certificates. I absolutely love the tablet, but if HTC doesn't fix the buttons and screen, I'll likely get a refund on it.
Your Loss!
I could see that. I got it for 250 and really enjoy it but don't think it is worth more than 350.

Yes, better battery, but I'm not so sure jb and/or apps running with jb haven't lowered it (iPad 3 ios8.1.1). I borrowed this iPad to try it since N9 quality is still a crap shoot. I love the display size and clarity. That's it. But, since having it for over a week, I scarcely pick up my N7 FHD (I hate the buttons on N7 so recessed buttons on N9 won't do--even using soft buttons). This iPad screen is much easier for me to read. JB was even simpler than with Nexus, but still not what I want. Personally, I think the N9 is about $80. overpriced, but I'll probably end up trying one ($50. off) before long.

But I am not 75 and don't need to be in a walled garden of sorts (assisted living environment).. IOS is good for non technical people that don't want to really think. I just prefer the customization and unlock ability of android. Don't get me wrong I always stay current with both IOS & Android as they both make strides every OS revision.

New tablet after a Nexus 7? Here is a worthy successor!

Lenovo Tab 4 Plus
http://www.gsmarena.com/lenovo_tab_4_8_plus-8603.php
It's slightly bigger than the Nexus 7, but not so much by comparison, as you can see here from a side by side:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/vYDGB1BfzbWjhO9t2
Better specs, clean Android, beautiful screen and very, very well made hardware, with the additional Plus of having an SD-card slot. By now I am on my 4th Nexus 7, which I mainly use use for eBook reading and some casual gaming, but the problems with the USB slot and the easily defective memory are a nuisance and I have been on the market for an alternative for more than 3 years. The Tab 4 for me is that alternative.
I've had it for a couple of days now and while it is not wildly popular (yet), there is already TWRP available AND root through Magisk.
Finally a decent tablet with USB-C, nice hardware, very good screen time (basically sames as the Nexus 7) and an up to date Android version without significant bloatware (Except for Microsoft Office, which you can uninstall easily, since it's not a system app).
I hope to see a thriving community around this tablet; it's worth it and will please those who have been happy with their Nexus 7, but are looking for a more modern piece of hardware as a successor.
Lucky me I am still on the first one from day one ?
Just have to charge wireless since 6 month. Bud there is no factory Image coming so as long as custums are coming I am good to go. But the Lenovo looks promising
nvidia shield tablet....best
So this runs stock Android? If so, may be my next tablet.

I think 2gb is enough for games
AGREED!!!
When i first saw this, i thought, this is the only upgrade to my 4 year old nexus 7....but sadly lenovo did not launch the 4/64 version in India....i don't know what to buy now..iPad looks like the only choice
I'd suggest the Huawei T2 7.0 Pro. I have both it and the Nexus 7. The Huawei is lighter, smaller, better battery, slightly better CPU/GPU, Micro SD slot, fingerprint sensor.
Oh and it can take a micro sim and be used as a cell phone.
The only negatives:
Only works on 2.4ghz wifi
Android 5.01 only currently
No NFC
No wireless charging
Otherwise it is a worthy successor. There are tons of 8" tablets available but for sheer portability (and why the nexus 7 was so popular in the first place), the T2 is a viable option.
Huawei also had the Media Pad X2 7.0 which has far superior hardware but I have been unable to find one to purchase anywhere.
I also used the Nexus 7 primarily as an E-Reader (I have had it with junk E-Ink devices, kobo and kindle are garbage)
but my Nexus 7 has a stuck reboot loop issue if it powers down.

Not only that, it's also got Micro-USB, not USB-C. Deal breaker.
Same goes for the Huawei, Micro USB.
The Lenovo is also availble in an LTE version. I don't need that, got a nice phone with an international contract as hotspot, so no more additional contracts for me, WiFi does the job for me.
The Lenovo does look like a solid device. For me the size though is a no go. Plus I have not seen it for sale anywhere in Canada. No clue what the supposed release date is.
What about superfish?
What tablets run stock Android or very close to? I want a tablet that will get new major Android releases.

Pretty much only the Nexus 7 is stock.
That doesn't seem to matter though. Google discontinued updates on the Nexus 7 after Android 6.0.1.
Agree, and I see no sign of them releasing a new tablet anytime soon.

Ya, I gave up waiting. Hence the Huawei that I have been using.
I just pulled mine out of the closet to check for updates and can't believe it still has a better screen then these Xiaomi phones I keep buying.

As bad as it's going to sound. I'm glad Apple is finally in the wireless charging game. Ya know they're likely to drop an iPad with it soon, and this may inspire the creation of other wireless charging tablets. It's really the only thing holding me back from replacing the Nexus 7 2013.
Mi max 2 ... Snapdragon...big battery..usb-c....not expensive
Minecraft story mode 2 is playable
