Any owners or prospective owners out there? - HTC Bolt / 10 Evo Questions & Answers

I actually work for Sprint and would consider picking up this phone if it got some decent developer support. If anyone has any basic questions about the device or its specs feel free to ask as I have played with it pretty extensively. It's an HTC device so hopefully it has an unlockable bootloader?

I should be receiving my Bolt in a few days, but I recall HTC stating that phones 2011 and newer will be able to unlock their bootloaders but certain models will be unlockable due to operators restriction.
Hopefully this phone gets some decent developer support.

Nice. As far as we can get it - m9 will get N faster) I'm also wanting to take a look at bolt's audio system, but system dump needed.

By N do you mean nougat? Cause the Bolt comes with Nougat 7.0 out of the box. First HTC phone to get it.
Also I'm not sure if XDA's description of the Bolt where it states the device is a mid range one from HTC is accurate. This is clearly intended to be a flagship. Sure it has the SD 810, but even in 2016 that is hardly a mid range SOC, and the device has many flagship qualities like a 5.5 inch quad HD display, an all metal unibody design with water resistance, large battery, USB type C, expandable storage, latest version of Android, etc.
There is even the whole LTE plus support thing which is a quality that other flagship on Sprint do not have. Oh and it has a 16mp camera with OIS. How exactly is this a mid range?
I have played with this phone a lot at work and it is very responsive. I don't think the SD 810 makes a difference.

I didn't do the HTC unlock. I tried sunshine in hopes of getting lucky and not having to use HTC unlock... No luck... Once I unlock bootloader, I'll try sunshine again.

I don't think sunshine will work yet...their website shows it supports up to android 6.0.1...jcase needs some partitions pulled to be able to update

Well... After my pizza arrives, I'll start the process of rooting this bad boy. My plan is HTC unlock, flash twrp, flash SuperSU. Once I get root, I'll pull whatever info jcase needs... What's all this talk about data partition getting corrupted after unlock?

You can unlock it but obtaining root is a different story... I've been slowly working on it with OMJ's help. I can't get SuperSU to flash and actually mod the boot.img...
If you have any luck, please let me know what you did. Thanks!

Oh wow, I don't think anybody expected that these unbranded ROMable devices might just become -very- popular!
As I said a week ago this was in the works
Wam bam thank you mam SE will rock this year if they keep going this direction
I saw the news -- really good move from S-E!
This and their promise to give the X10 an update to 2.3.3 are signs that S-E is really improving and taking their customers serious, and that they want to win in the Android race!
I'm excited that S-E is showing signs that of wanting to work WITH and FOR their customers (you know, the ones who buy their phones, as opposed to operators) and not AGAINST, as many other manufactures...
One thing I'm wondering is, is this only happening with factory unlocked phones, or will it work if we buy a locked phone first, and then din unlock after

All phones will have a locked bootloader by default. Unbranded and simlock-free phones will be unlockable through some tool Sony Ericsson will release (probably).
You can check if your device is unlockable by connecting it to fastboot. If fastboot recognizes your phone, you will be able to unlock it when Sony Ericsson releases its tool.
Hmmm... any Rogers customers got any clues?

Does Rogers usually simlock their phones and/or put custom apps on Android devices? If yes: you will not have a permanently locked bootloader. Only unbranded handsets without simlock will be unlockable.

Yeah, Rogers usually adds a number of their own apps and they change the bootscreen to some crap Rogers one instead of the stock one.
Well, was on the fence about the Arc, but now I am getting it...
Will jump to dual core later this year, I just love the design of this one ^^
Time to go back to SE it seems!
hopefully it will be possible at some point to make the phone think it is the same as the unlocked ones... I will keep checking, because since I'm using a f'in htc magic right now. My phone is great, running cyanogen and everything, but still waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too old, I kinda need one, but want something I can have fun with...
Got this from Sony Ericsson:
To enable this, we will later launch a web service where an unlock boot loader key can be retrieved by entering your IMEI. This key will be used in Fastboot where you perform the actual unlock boot loader sequence. A more detailed instruction will be provided later, when this service is available.
Depending on the original configuration of your phone, it will be either be possible or not possible to unlock the boot loader. No phone updates are required to enable this functionality.

So, if you provide an IMEI of a permanently locked phone, you will not get an unlock code, and even if you would get one, it wouldn't work. Looks like a pretty foolproof way!
I don't like when SE use the word ''later''...it can be 3 or 6 month ''later''
At least we already have 2.3 and the software seems to be relatively stable and snappy. I don't need a custom rom yet.

I Don't Believe On The Motorola Promise About That Unlockable Bootloader

hi,
guys, I don't want to dishearten you but did you think a minute about the way motorola will unlock your bootloader in the future update??
as they will release an update.zip like in the past, I'm not really sure if they will include the unlockable bootloader inside it and, not sure also if an android update can flash a bootloader. So I am a little anxious for you guys, mine is already unlocked...

Moto said they are going to do it. They already dont it on the leaked future builds, not to mention the one Kenn is running which is an ATT GB. Not to mention this is the same way the did it on the Xoom. Theres nothing to worry about, its unlocked 4 ever.

LOL Someone needs to read through the forums. Bootloader is unlocked already.
Agree with Jay ... some one needs to read the OP ^_^ LOL
I, maybe just optimistically, think they will. The backlash, *****ing, low sales, the fact they said they would, and the fact that we have it already all points, IMO, to them releasing it. Motorola exec. - "Well the kids already have it so lets release it and make us look good." If they are on our side, at least give us what we want, they sell more. DROID - ground breaking - unlockable - sold like hot cakes. ATRIX - ground breaking - locked - not so much

Does it really matter? For those that actually want an unlocked bootloader, they can get it in the dev forum. For the average user who will still get the OTA update, they probably didn't care about the bootloader to begin with.

I'm guess i'm still an 'average user' when it comes to android, but this is where I came to become a superuser (pun intended). I don't think i'm ready to mess with the HK build yet, but I definitely plan to flash a few ROMs when the official unlocked GB update comes through. And if it gets yanked before the final release, hopefully i'll know enough by then to use kenneth's version, or if worst comes to worst, the HK build.

It's not like the HKTW build is as unstable as the build TBH gave us. The only things that don't work is the front facing camera, and fingerprint sensor.
I just didn't restore from a backup, and you can fix the WebTop. So my phone is running fine, and it seems even more stable than FroYo (Besides the obvious bugs)

It really dose not matter if thay include the unlockable bootloader in every update or not. As long as their is a way for it to be done. Thats all the matters. Really only the N1 could be unlocked without much of any hassle. You just needed to know what commands to run,
Once its unlocked. Its unlocked. Cant go back. And just because you flash back to 1.57 or 1.83 and it no longer says "Unlocked" at the top. It is. All you need to do is flash the pudding and it will put those little words back.

tang no matter what update motorola does in the future they wont be able to take away the unlock already created. with that said this post is useless, and a mod should close it, this will give the wrong idea to anyone coming to the forum looking for the unlock. who knows what motorola will bring in the future, fact remains, is unlocked and it aint going back.

[Q] Bootloader unlock in comparison to other manufacturers

has anyone experience in the hassl of unlocking bootloader from the g2 or LG phones in comparison to other devices?
how is LGs policy for giving kernel source and unlocking bootloader?

A little late to the party on this one, LG released a few of its sources for the G2, we already have custom kernel development that just started brewing here lately.
As far as the bootloader, this device has a work around using Loki and it works fine. As evidence points that we can flash pretty much anything worth flashing including custom kernels.

What I would tell you personally is dont delay, carriers will likely be pushing security patches to keep out hackers and make it very difficult for devs to work around in the near future.
No need to worry about s-off, its never been discussed here which tells me it must not exits on this device. I have seen it on almost all HTC devices though.

My main problem with the turbo is that it can become very hot, i think the design choise with the droid maxx to put in the X8 processor was a very good one, but not so popular because it did not look so great on paper.
The droid turbo had the best processor available at that time, meaning it looked great on paper but somehow it has to heat up also when navigating for example
So strange that the droid maxx can navigate without any stutters and only get slightly warm, while the turbo and many other phones get very hot, and after a couple hours of driving in a warm climate even get overheating warnings.
Lets hope this years droid will be better (not on paper but in reality)

I must've got lucky with a Mini (XT1030) off fleabay that still had 4.2.2 on it. $25 in BTC to jcase and Sunshine open-sesame'd the bootloader without issue.
I haven't done any downgrading on a Motorola, but I did pull the stock boot.img/recovery.img/system.img of this Mini before flashing TWRP. Then immediately made a TWRP backup folder of the stock system. Not sure if these could get a locked 4.4+ backwards to where it could be unlocked, but I can provide upon request.

What I can provide access to are the following:
> boot.img / recovery.img / system.img files extracted from Droid Mini 4.2.2 over adb
> TWRP backup folder containing Data/System/Boot from Droid Mini 4.2.2 prior to flashing new firmware
I have no idea if any of these could be manipulated into allowing 4.2.2 to boot. I assume root access can be managed in 4.4.4 but I have no idea if that's enough to manually modify the system. But if someone wants to experiment then I'll upload them onto a file site somewhere.

Thanks. Not sure either if any of that would work. I do know that root access is possible on 4.4.4 with @CrashXXL's root method but unfortunately it does not disable write protection so I do not think any modifications can be made to the system.
However, you can still upload the files you have if you want.
You can PM me the site info if you don't feel comfortable putting that info on here. :good:

Rooting the Hydrogen One

I've received my phone and contrary to the review sites, it's a very cool and unique device with an incredible screen as well as a huge battery!
As a long time power user who has always rooted his phones, I've gone through and tried to unlock the bootloader but so far to no avail
My hope is to get into fastboot and then OEM unlock the bootloader at least, then get into sideloading Magisk at a minimum and hopefully down the line, get TWRP on there and then a custom ROM such as AEX to give me all the tweaks I'm missing compared to my Oneplus 3T with AEX on it! Look forward to the discussion and hopefully someone with good skills can get hold of the phone to make it happen! Thx
I have enabled Developer Mode and OEM unlock is an option so it's most definitely rootable. But the chances of this phone getting near a big enough user database to get dev's working on it is unlikely. But here's to hoping

Yes, the OEM Unlock gives me hope. I haven't been able to get to the fastboot system to try it though. Did you manage to get there? The usual volume up plus power on boot doesn't work.
I don't think this will be a rootable phone, you can get as far as fastboot but it requires a hash-code for unlocking. Unless a third party can decode it Red will not share I have asked. Unfortunately this really sucks because there are definitely some things that could be fixed with a few hacks ie. back light, audio levels, scrolling responsiveness.
<----Bummed
That really sucks that Red won't give us an unlock code. I love the 4V but without root I really can't use the phone as a daily driver. As you say, too many things which could be fixed but won't be without root.
Fingers crossed for someone in the US getting the phone through AT&T et al who is also good at hacking. Otherwise I think I may end up selling the phone at an unfortunate loss

Yeah I like the 4V display but that is the only thing the phone has going for it.and it makes it quite boring for me. (I'm used to HTC and Samsung). Also the screen size is a turn off and the huge bezels everywhere. Believe it or not I would rather have the pixel 3 with its horrendous notch. Which is the most upsetting phone edition since apple. I would say this phone would be great with root and roms and if that happens I may give it another go. But for now I think I'm just going to let it go...
Great news! Red has responded to me on Facebook saying they are open to unlocking the bootloader for non-carrier devices (ie those bought directly from Red).
So there's hope!

Yes, they told me they would do this. But they won't give you a code if you have a carrier phone.

Yes but that's pretty much standard ops for carriers due to their onerous rules. Buy unlocked from Red directly if you plan to root ?

Did you ever get that unlock code?
No, they went radio silent
I've posted at h4vuser.net several times but no one seems interested. I love the H4V but can't use it as a daily driver without being in charge of my own device.
I have successfully unlocked my bootloader but im not a developer so i dont know how to compile a TWRP for it but but if any one does know how i really would like to assist in getting this device rooted i have been trying since they day it was released
What was your method to unlock the bootloader?
