The Xperia Z4 confirmed for 7.0 by Sony - Xperia Z4/Z3+ General

Sony has made it formal that they plan to release the 7.0 update for Xperia Z3+ (or Z4).
Though, no release date, but I don't think it will happen this year. Q1 2017 looks likely.
-- Source

Yeah, I would expect them to update the Z3+ to Nougat...although I am not holding my breath for a quick update either.

Hopefully I'll be on a Nexus before it happens. This is the biggest mistake I've ever purchased. Camera is total crap. Always had been. Then I'll put a bullet thru this overpriced POS.

well, the Snapdragon 810 is a power-hungry, intermediate step to the Snapdragon 820, "Kryo architecture",
for Sony or Qualcomm it's one of the first ARM64 (64bit) processors,
also it seems that the mixed ARM64, ARM (32bit + 64bit) Android experience is far from optimized.
Hopefully this changes with e.g. Nougat
You get more power compared to e.g. ARM Cortex A15 (Snapdragon 800, 801),
however the efficiency is around 15-25% worse at least for Cortex A53 (little cores), under heavy load, the Cortex A57 cores should be more efficient,
to really get the most out of it (not only focusing on e-peen comparisons of e.g. Antutu Benchmarks) in terms of Battery runtime,
you could do some "weird" modifications, which I'm sure not everyone would be happy with:
e.g. overclocking the A53 cores way more (depending of cores if the SoC can take it), and limiting big cores (A57) to e.g. only 2 and slightly underclocking it (similar to Snapdragon 808),
then doing several modifications to the HMP scheduling algorithm to aggregate apps more aggressively on already running cores, etc. etc.

Remember, that the cam on the Z4/Z3+ still might suffer from the "fisheye" behavior and essentially making the pictures taken unusable,
don't know if it was fixed or improved with the new camera blobs (or if they are only available to the Z5 family)

@zacharias.maladroit, camera colors and video rec fixed. I just use selfcompiled cm13 for E6533.
Trying fix DS, no luck yet, but sim in slot1 works fine

@Quarx great to read/hear !
can you please share and/or upload the progress on e.g. github that you make regarding Dual SIM support ?
android_device_ivy changes ? android_devicy_kitakami changes ? kernel changes ? [obviously it needs to be compiled with the dual sim variant dts/dt* files]
would be nice if we perhaps could get on the right track for good and finally get it working :good:
Thanks

Good luck guys, tester here.

Here's a video comparison showing both Xperia Z1 and Galaxy Note 3 playing a heavy 4K video.

Why is it lagging so bad? (I mean, the other one, compare the butterfly wings for example)
Thoughts?
.
S800 cant handle the sammy bloatwares. Anyway old.
Good Luck recording 4K videos then haha
when I had XZU I played a few sample 4k videos and they play flawlessly
dang the color difference is just so far apart. XZ1 FTW
Take that Samsung! Screen of Z1 also is way better, ZU also has great screen like the Z1 and plays things better then Note 3 with less rom
Samsung big fail with 3GB ram etc and still a crappy phone

Curiously enough, when Samsung learned Sony was getting the same SoC as their newest flagship and Sony was shipping it earlier, they ordered Qualcomm to "slightly overclock" their SoCs in order to keep the king-of-the-hill position, but as you know for sure overclocking is not always easy and not always a good idea. I'm dying to see a battery life comparo between those two beasts.

They probably still do the same benchmark cheating like they had, especially when they actually admitted it and said they did nothing wrong. I always wonder why Touchwiz is laggier than others with the same/similar SoC and yet it always top on benchmark. That was why.
the last few posts on this thread mean nothing to me, I have seen benchmark scores from Z1 that are better than a higher clocked device - does it really matter ?
what's the phone recently that has a rear end stitched on - what were they thinking, that just threw me completely - I can't say more because I am totally blown away - who decided that a modern device looked cool with the back panel stitched on ???????

Damn some people in here have no clue what they are talking about.
The s800 supports 4k video fine the note 3 dropping frames is a firmware problem not hardware and will be fixed with an update.
The s800 in the note 3 is also superior to the one in the Z1, its not overclocked its called a higher bin soc. The s800 in the z1 has a max gpu clock of 450mhz the one in the note 3 has a max gpu clock of 550mhz.

I agree, it wasn't fanboyism. Although it was wrong as far as I can tell, I find no record of any phone other than the Xiaomi MiPhone3 that is shipping with the MSM8974AB, which has the higher clocked GPU. Everything I can find points to the GNote 3 shipping with the same MSM8974 CPU as the Sony Xperia Z1.
The screen is only good in the Gallery App, when playing games IPS and Amoled emits better colour or doesn't look as dull. Of course you won't notice this until you put them side by side. I mean the Xperia Z1 screen is beautiful but Sony should really just use the same colour calibration on the gallery app through out the whole system.

It's time to say goodbye my friends! :(

After all thease months, after all good and bad moments it's time to say goodbye and move on to my next device.
I bought LG G3 couple of weeks ago and today I'm selling my Xperia Z. It's so hard to move on because Xperia Z reminds me on true legend, Xperia X10i. It's such a great device to have. In fact , after using G3 for couple of weeks I'm so disappointed with this device (laggy software, not so great build quality) so I'll probably sell it and buy a real device, Xperia device (Z2 or Z3).
I'm gonna miss this forum so much, I'm gonna miss all You guys. Good luck and take care! :good:
So, the G3 isn't great then? I'm looking at getting a new device next month and it was a possibility, as reviews seem to be all positive. The Z3 is also on my list along with the N6.
I'm leaning towards the N6 because of ease of root etc and the huge development support that comes with the Nexus devices, but I'll see closer to the time as Sony has established itself as my current best Android OEM because of the great experience I've had with the Z.
Anyway, good luck for the future and I'm sure I'll see you around.

LG G3 has beautiful display, one of the best out there, but 1440 x 2560 res is unnecessary because you can't see the difference between fullHD and this with naked eye. Camera is ok but not breathtaking (I think that LG use Sony 13 mpx module), Lollipop ROM is laggy, signal strength is lower than on other devices. Battery life is ok but not great, double tap to lock/unlock function is fantastic. If you look for development support I can't recommend you this phone, at least for now. On the other side I tested Xperia Z3 last week. Fantastic device, great looking, screen is beautiful, stock rom is fast and smooth, build quality is excellent. Battery life is insane, nice speakers, and camera is fantastic. I'm so in love with that phone man, I hope that Z3 is my next phone. And thanks for nice words.
I had a real bad experience with an LG device. The Optimus 2X was released with a lot of publicity as the first dual core Android phone and then abandoned with buggy software and only 2 updates in 2 years. I promised myself never to buy from them again, but the G3 was tempting me. Hearing your thoughts has put me off again!
So, Z3 or N6 it is probably.
Hope to see you around on the forums if I get a Z3.
Cheers.

Yeah, you never knew if the thing would be unresponsive when you picked it up to use it. The stock rom was woeful as well. The only reason I didn't trash it was because of the great developer support and custom roms.

MWC isn't THAT far away, and if the Z4 is announced then expect a Z3 price drop. The upgrades for the Z4 won't be game changers - an 810 with a better GPU, a slightly nicer display that may well be QHD, improvements to the camera I expect. With the amount of time people use their phones nowadays, battery life simply must improve. And with rumours that the actual Sony imaging department will handle the image processing, maybe the Z4 will get a stand-out camera. I really hope the RAW API's will be implemented by Sony. I'm looking at an upgrade too, maybe a Oneplus Two, or if they make a Nexus 5 2015 edition I'd bite. The Xperia Z was my first smartphone and I'd like to try other android devices.
Have any of you guys seen the new ASUS ZenFone that's to be released in March? It looks like an absolute animal of a phone and I'm very tempted to snap one up as soon as preorders are available because of its fantastic price and even better spec to follow, but I'm worried about the developer support as there hasn't really been a great deal of support for ASUS' previous ZenFone generations, do you guys think that the price would pull more developers in?

Is that the one with the Intel processor? Yikes, as far as I know, developer support on those devices is nowhere near the level of your standard Snapdragon phones. Exynos processors in Samsung's are very common and even those are shunnes., with developers working on Snapdragons instead.
Quad HD sounds nice on paper but it doesn't bring any visual differences that your eyes can detect. Except the low battery indicator flashing more frequently?

I have used a LG G3 for more than a while.. I couldn't see anything wrong with it on KK.. Compared its display with a Z3 and saw the difference in detail and also under sunlight it seemed better than Z3.. Ofc 2k comes into play as well.. So it would be wrong to compare. Also the gestures are nice on any high end LG phone which Xperia's miss officially.. And battery life on G3 is amazing for the h/w it has.. I hardly saw a hiccup even the LG UI.. Camera is decent(Probably same as XZ).. Atleast it seemed the same when i compared my XZ cam with it.. G3 is a beast phone and i think their LP fw update might be buggy since its just initial update.. Ofc u have to wait for another 1 or 2 bug fixing updates to experience the best of LP on any phone for that matter..

Z5 Discussion and thoughts!

Hey!
Because the soon-coming Xperia Z5 doesn't have any subforum section - dedicated to the device, of course, so I thought we can use this thread to discuss this holy beast - that have been announced to come in totally THREE different "editions"!
More info on this Link and so can be found on Google.
What is your thoughts on this beast? Anything you are going to buy, or will you avoid this one and wait on the Z5+ / Z6 instead?
Regards,
Destroyedbeauty @ XDA-Developers
Zero interest in the Z5 Premium. 4K on a phone screen is moronic specs one-upsmanship unless you plan to use it near-exclusively with a magnifying glass. (Or with Google Cardboard, I guess.) And the Z2 is already the largest I would be willing to purchase, so the Z5 Premium is too big -- it has to be, to fit that screen.
The Z5 strikes me as interesting, though, depending on how good the fingerprint scanner is. That might well be my next upgrade, but not immediately for sure. Perhaps in a year or so...
Simply put-my next smartphone
Better wait for the real monster to arrive Q2 2016 : Z5+ /Z6 Premium with 5.7 inch 4K display and Snapdragon 820

That's some bull****. Especially since they had limited time with the device. I've seen two reviews which had no limited time with the devices reporting the same problem as on the z3+/z4 and all other devices running on the 810. How would Sony be able to fix this for the z5 if all other manufacterers are struggling with the same problem?

Maybe some adjustment or SOC specific patches to the kernel (I think the Z5 will come with an 3.1X written Linux kernel - like the Z3+/Z4 was shipped with) or so, that reduces heating and thermal issues?

Z5 looks to me like a next gen xperia, until now every xperia had one or the other annoying flaw in it which we had to live with when we bought it. But z5 series phones looks real good and I hope to see it in the final product. People might argue 4k is useless, but I'm sure you would notice the technology once you actually use the phone and you will realize the difference between a 1080p display and 4k display.. Although I was a little disappointed to see z5c getting only 2gb of ram and not 3gb like the others in the series.. And about S810, I'm sure z5 wont heat any more than other oem flagships which use it. Plus the heating stuff that surrounds s810 has been overhyped in my opinion, I've used a z3+ for slightly more than an hour in a resell shop trying all the features and stuff once and it got hot as much as my z2, nothing more.. Don't judge about it just by reading reviews online or before you even experience it..

Ive found android only has issues when a device has 1.4GB of ram or less.
You can live on 1GB but multitasking isnt even 5/10
But i agree with the heat issues subject. S810 has some issues but can be solved as we've seen with some tablets
Snapdragon 810 is garbage. Easy.

Z5 components

Hello,
I propose we list here the parts that make the Xperia Z5, with manufacturer. It's something I always miss when analyzing a new phone.
What image sensor is Sony using? I've read it's the Sony IMX300, but I can't find it on Sony's page.
And the screen? Is it made by Sony?
Thanks.
I wish to know what kind of material they used in the z5 and the z5 compact for the body itself
Wait for the dismantle video
Even I read somewhere it said IMX300. Love to see what's inside and camera looks really promising. Hope it won't disappoint us.

I'm wondering if the Z5 family will (hopefully) be using the latest version of this CPU too, to alleviate the issues with the ones released in the earlier flapship handsets
Edit: never mind! I found an article that this revised chip was announced in June and is supposed to be in the Z3+ so should also be in the Z5 too

From my understanding, the z5 uses a new heat sink system that regulates the heats much better than the z3+. There was a video of it conducting a 4k record at 10 minutes without any issues.

Z5 Premium or hang till the Z6 launches?????? Your opinions

Here is my dilemma, my contract is up and I can upgrade anytime. I really love the Z5 Premium, but now i am having second taught's upon reading this...

Yes i know this is just rumor and speculation... however Sony is really upping its game recently:good:. Big selling point is the 820 Snapdragon.
So what you guys think, wait for Z6 or get the Z5 prem?
Pro's and Con's welcome

My opinion is to wait for Z6. I don't see any extra ordinary feature in Z5 except fingerprint. I think you should wait for Z6 and see if anything special is introduced.
Thank you, much appreciated.
Apart from the new new SOC what else do you think they might introduce?
Sure it'll be the same camera.
Do you think USB- C?
Wait!
With the new rumours doing the rounds, I think that it'd be better to wait for the Z6.
First and foremost, the new SoC itself should be enough not to consider Z5/Z5 Premium.
Also, there's talk about 5 different variants (based on screen size, and therefore budget - 4",4.6",5.2",5.7",6") to choose from, so I think that's another reason to wait. Although useless, but there could be Force Touch display and hoping for USB-C :fingers-crossed:
Yes the options for all the variations would be awesome. However, its sad if they will ditch the 4K display. Hope that wont happen.
Quick Charge 3.0 would be nice.

The new Snapdragon will own hard time..if this is the only thing that will be different between the z5 i will sure wait for the 6 to come.I had the same dilema, but when i read the upgrade and the improvements of the 820.. hell yea it will be a beast in every aspect. Not to mention the camera quality boost which is important for me.On the other hand sony told that they will start working on the image sensor quality, software also so..yes .. changes will come in the near future.
@effective
You are so right , 820 overall is 40% better than stock 810. Now that's something :fingers-crossed:
Eagerly waiting for Z6.
1. SD820
2. 4GB ram
3. 32/64GB internal storage with expandable storage.(if they give 64gb option I am totally getting it)
4. 2K display 5.2-5.5"
5. At least 3000mAh battery
6. With new camera sensor with at least 240fps slo-mo video recording.(Everyone's going with 240fps and Sony is still on 120fps)
7. Improved finger print scanner
8. At least 8MP front facing camera(I think they should go with wide angle 8MP)
9. Wireless Charging
10. USB-C
11. Two tone flash Or use two LEDs (Xenon would be awesome)
And many more
What do you think about the release date, would it be early Q1? Given Sony's update cycle?
Wait for Xperia Nexus..
SD 820 of course.
IIRC QuickCharge 3.0 is included in the 820.
The big question is. Will the Z6 feature the SD820 or still be an 810 device? Might very well be possible, sony always has been a little slow with new chipsets.

The S7 will be released by the end of January 2016 and it will pack the 820 so yes,it will be with 820 for sure. The thing that i hate is the 6 month cycle..that OEMS release new phones..but anyway.I guess Z6 will see the world maybe on april/may.Till then all issues with the 820 will be fully resolved. Do you think Sammy will ditch its in house SOC Exynos 8890 for Snapdragon?

No.They will bring two variants. with 820 and exynos.
Just switched to a moto pure edition/x style.
Havent even bothered rooting it just put adguard on it, this thing is fast as hell and trumps it in every category. Maybe the Z6 will be a beast though.

IMHO, 4k on mobile screens are not really that useful or even practical. I'd rather see 4k content on a 50XL (exaggerated) screen!
Yup, QC 3 would be nice :good:

With the reports of overheating on Z5C and Z5 still doing the rounds, I don't think (and hope) that Sony will use S810 for Z6. Besides, Z6 will most likely be out by mid-2016, so by then atleast 1 or 2 phones would be out with S820, so no reason why Sony can't get it too.

I am assuming Q2 or Q3 2016, though I'd like it right now
I have been able to upgrade for a year, and I didn't even seriously thing about going anywhere near a s810 device due to overheating.
Two of my friends have Z5's and they overheat (when gaming IIRC) to the point that it burns their face should they answer a call shortly after, sorry qualcomm thanks, but no thanks. I advised all my friends who's contracts were up for renewal to wait until 2016, but they're impatient and jumped the gun.

So far, there are big downsides to the ( Z5 ) SoC810 Snapdragon, 4K screen but not all the time .... heating a lot.
Was looking forward to the new device ( Z5 ) premium , but i think patience is my friend here.
One thing is for sure , my next phone will be a Sony.
Most indication around the net points to MWC release date of 22 Feb 2016.
The voting results speak for themselves , a lot of us would choose patience ( Z6 ) over impluse ( Z5 ) .
I switched from Z2 to Z5. It is noticeably faster and has better camera. Worth it. Although I miss old LED bar.
And I'll replace it with next Z that comes out next summer (Z7 or whatever).
Really ? The crappy LED bar on the Z2 which you won't see in most angles when your phone lies on the table, you miss that one?
