Best Time To Purchase? (When are Bugs Fixed?) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

The last three phones I purchased, Motorola Q9H Global, Motorola Atrix, and Galaxy S4, I bought them the first week they came out. Each of those phones had some form of problem, be is glitching, screen issues, hardware button problems, or the like. Each of them had to be sent in for warranty work or replacement. I keep my phones in cases and never drop them.
I was told to never purchase the first version of something if I wanted to avoid the problems. I plan to purchase the S7 Edge and would really love to avoid having to return it a month later to get it repaired or replaced. When is a good time to purchase this phone? When do they release the versions that have a lot of the bugs fixed, both hardware and software? Thank you!
One can hope that in a few months they might have one with USB Type-C.

They've already released a few patches fixing most bugs and security issues (I haven't encountered any but everyone's milage can vary). As far as USB C, they aren't going to randomly modify the S7/S7E. They're micro USB and always will be. Now the Note 6 is rumored to have USB C which should be out in October/November if you want that. Personally I'm fine with micro USB because it's easier to find accessories (cheaper too) and actually charges faster. If your worried about wear and tear on the port just get a wireless charger or two. Just my .02 my friend!

Thanks for the reply! USB-C isn't a huge deal for me, but would have been nice.
My main problem is if any hardware issues will be fixed by a certain time, or if no other changes will be made on this phone until the S8 comes out.
If all of you are confident that the phone I buy today will be exactly the same as the phone I would buy in August, then I will consider buying one today. The only thing I really want is root, but I know this will happen eventually.

I would advise AGAINST relying upon root arriving for AT&T devices. I've not seen any chatter about anyone getting the bootloader-locked GS7/7e devices going that way in any mass-usable way.
If root is really important to you I'd advise looking toward one of the international/unlocked Exynosed-base variants which already has root. With the correct device you should still be able to use it within the US on our service providers.

They fixed all the bugs so that's not an issue but if your really counting on root u should definitely get the exynos, I'm happily enjoying my SD without root

[Q] Why does the VZW version seem different?

Some accessories fit, some dont. is that because of the wireless charging?
Ive read its the worst of all the versions.
is there any truth to this? Im trying to decide between this and the HTC one.
Phone that came out in April vs one of the newest and top of the line.. Idk what your smoking

The Verizon one has wireless charging and the back buttons are different, I have not messed around with any of the other carriers G2, but do have the Verizon one. Watch the droid-life video comparing the Verizon and AT&T versions of the phone, I don't have the link handy

Edit: auto correct grammar malfunction
It also apparently lacks the 3rd microphone for noise cancelling, so it just has the two, one used for noise cancellation.
well, i dont foresee as many cases become available for the verizon version only when the others are all the same. thats a huge factor for me
my job doenst require me to use my phone from the hours of 8am to 3pm. So battery isnt really a big issue for me.
this has been a real tough decision for me and im just trying to do as much research as possible before pulling the trigger today.
Ill probably go with the HTC one and switch within the 14 days if im not happy with it.

I am very happy with my Verizon G2. It has to be the best phone I have had yet. Screen is very good in direct sun light. I have yet to see any type of lag with my phone. I am rooted. There seems to be decent Dev support with this phone. Very good batter life, and it is very quick to charge too. Size wise, the phone is really not any larger then my old Razr Maxx, and the G2 is less weight.
The one and only issue I have is that Otter Box has no made a Defender Series case for this phone. I am using a case with a belt clip that I found on ebay that cost me 8 bucks that works pretty well.

Any regrets purchasing OP2 - Fixing to pull the trigger

I've been studying various phones over the last 2 months going crazy choosing a phone $300 or less that's best for me. The line between $200 to $300 is huge on androids. 2-3 GB ram usually and a 600-800 snapdragon with most being the 615. So of course my stop is at the OP3. I had other phones in mind like Honor 5X, Nexus 5x, zenfone 2 variants, droid maxx (2014) and so on. Lack of development and potential mods left me from other choices. Every phone lacks a feature and some have features. For this price there is no perfect phone. So I'm asking guys who made the choice to this phone. Are there regrets vs the $300 or less options?
how i wish it has wireless charging and fast charging and it'll be a perfect Phone for me. but i guess OnePlus didnt add that to the OP2 so that you'll buy the OP3
I've never found or had a "perfect" phone. I got this OP2 a couple weeks ago, worked great with stock firmware (update came out same day i got the phone lol). I have issues with my Pioneer head unit playing media audio, but other BT devices work for it so I'm not sure what the problem is there.
I flashed AOSPA on the device and it runs great, same BT issue as stock firmware.
Here's things I've noted:
- 4gb ram for the price
- 64gb storage isn't bad, meets my needs but not expandable.
- It charges in 1 1/2 - 2 hours with the included charger & cable, which is "okay".
- Fingerprint sensor works very quickly, I hear after that update it works better then most devices.
- Very sturdy design with the metal (and sandstone back = no slip!), but it is heavier then my old LG G3. Not sure if I'll be able to magnet mount it in my car yet.
- 1080p screen doesn't look any different then the 1440p i had on the G3, good color balance.
I think it is a good purchase for the price!
At this point, the OP2 seems like a great device to me. Though, I will suggests that you also look at the Moto X Pure. You really can't go wrong with either of them though!

I've looked at it and many other phones. My phone purchase has been a 2 month long research project. Nexcus 5x, Honor 5x, Zenfone 2 variants, so on and so on. The Pure is the same price as the OP2 but with 16GB internal or $349 for 32 and $399 for 64GB which is a little out of my price range. My max is $300 and from Amazon I get a 10% discount being an employee
This will be a at&t US carrier who I will be switching to. Boost is my current carrier and Verizon before that. In 2015 I remember issues with One Plus on at&t. Have those issues been addressed. I guess I'll be getting the sim kit from at&t and doing my hookup through the internet hopefully

Hello.
I have plenty of regrets; but I'll keep to just bashing their customer service.
I have had to contact customer service twice now and I will take you through it step by step.
first time about 4 months ago my phone started acting up (less then six months after i bought it); all three buttons on the front stopped working, the screen could no longer auto adjust the brightness, for some reason the battery drained absurdly quick and the phone overheated. after about a week of jumping through a few hoops to prove tho phone had actually broken down and I wasn't just whining I got to send my phone for repair.
the first thing you'll notice is that they don't get back to you with status updates (except for trying to close your ticket due to inactivity every few days) so you have to ask all the time whats happening. two weeks after I sent them my phone I finally get an answer saying they repaired my phone and will send it back and they gave me a tracking number.
when I looked up that tracking number it turned out the phone had already been in my home town at the ups facility for four days, so just because they didn't feel like sending me updates I spent four more days then I had to without my phone. so not the worst customer experience I ever had but still not very good.
fast track forward to about two weeks ago.
the phone breaks down again, this time I can't make or receive neither phone calls or text messages and the 4g/3g internet connection stopped working. I try two separate sim cards in the phone and none of them work, I try my sim in my girlfriends phone and there it works fine, so it's definitely the OP2 that broke down.
so I open a ticket with Oneplus, the same thing happens this time with absolutely no contact from them, I have to nag and contact them over and over just to know whats going on, no one from Oneplus ever sends an update. and this time it's worse because now they haven't even gotten to the point where I send them my phone, its been over a week since I opened the ticket and NOTHING has happened like literally nothing, it's as if I haven't even opened a ticket. and this is very annoying because I had to borrow an ancient piece of **** replacement phone i the meantime.
it is really starting to look like I might have to buy a new phone from someone else because they can't seem to fix their broken piece of ****.
TL;DR
so I guess my tip to anyone who's is thinking of buying anything from Oneplus is : don't. even though yes the phone is great, its quick and easy and fabulous in many ways but if it breaks down (which it seems like a lot of them do), you might as well just buy a new phone because the customer service is horrid.
thanks for reading...
We are on the same boat OP. months passed until now but still I can't decide which should I get. :/
My preferences:
Good Community Support (future proof)
Great Camera and battery life
Almost stock experience
These are my choices:
Nexus 5x
OnePlus 2
Redmi Note 3 Pro
and now the OnePlus 3.
The nexus 5x is very affordable now but what holds me back from getting it was the 2gb ram and no dual sim capability, as I become lazy now to bring 2 phones and I used only small body bag going to work. and for the 1+2 I've read some issues like the dead home buttons and no fast charging support.

Samsung to push an OTA update to Limit the Note 7 Charging to 60% or normal capacity

Reference: http://www.zdnet.com/article/samsung-to-deploy-sw-upgrade-to-cap-note-7-charging-to-60-percent/
Samsung will push the OTA update to users that refuse to exchange or delay return of the now recalled device on September 20th. They did not comment on the replacement devices or if they will have a patch as well. I wonder if this is how they were able to "Repair" the devices so quickly if so it's a big blow to users who were expecting a larger battery capacity.

Any source for them "talking to carriers" about it? I was under the impression it was also only in Korea. I'll just disregard any OTA's until the replacements come in, whenever that shall be.

This is a fix for those who don't want to return their phones: limit the battery charging so that it won't reach critical mass. They haven't been able to "repair the devices so quickly", all Samsung is doing is expediting distribution from the non-exploding battery factories (allegedly China, as opposed to Korea) so that people can get the new stock faster. Even with that, although it's possible they can start showing up next week, there's no way they can fill the demand from people who have returned their phones. It will probably take a few weeks to a month or two for Samsung and their retailers to catch up
just to clear things up: for now only in Korea, in US needs to be reviewed and approved by that cpsc first. It's a temporary fix for N7's with possibly faulty batteries only, before they're exchanged. Not something you'll see on replacement N7. I'm not even sure it will ever be approved here, since it may be sending confusing message, which originally was: stop using it, shut it down and return it. So now we have fix and you can use it again? Could be wet dream for lawyers. Also the question is: is keeping charge bellow 60% stopping the overheating and fire, or is it just lowering the intensity and heat? Samsung never fully explained what the problem is exactly, but I would speculate if you have internal short, as Samsung suggested the problem is, then even at 60 % charge, there could be a lot heat released, but without knowing exact process of failure, who knows if this fix is 100% effective.
Its a bull crap update.
Its not to fix the phones.
Its to stop people from using them until they make replacements.
Which is crap because most people, like myself, dont want a loaner phone. Which just jacks up everything nd 9 out of 10 you get screw on if.
But we want to keep are phones amd trade them in for a new note 7 that works, same day.
So samsung is thinking that limiting the charge will get more people to turn there phones in.
Im pretty sure samsung cant keep up with the deman to make new phones so there trying to grab the old phone and replace the battert finish them up and resell them.
I just hope they can finisj up nee stock. Get tjem in store and have the exchange go over nicely. Because rightnow it looks like hell

AT&T Will Let Customers With Replacement Galaxy Note 7s Swap Out Their Devices

Bad news for Samsung keeps on coming
AT&T will allow any of its customers with replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices to swap them out for a different smartphone, the company tells The Verge. The move follows Sprint's decision to let its customers return replacement Note 7s for a device from a different manufacturer on the heels of a replacement Note 7 catching fire on a plane earlier this week. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has opened an investigation into the fire.
At this rate it's likely that Verizon and T-Mobile won't be too far behind in offering to swap out replacement Note 7 devices. With the uncertainty around the safety of the Note 7, offering a full exchange is the easiest way to ease the worries of consumers until the CPSC completes its investigation. If you're an AT&T or Sprint customer, you can take your replacement Note 7 back to the carriers' respective retail stores and exchange the devices for another smartphone of your choosing.

Interesting. Not sure what i would do. So far i am enjoying my replacement note 7. If it comes to it i guess i will have to make a decision but i need more info before making that move. Its a shame, Samsung makes good stuff, its unfortunate they are having these issues. We shall see

Yeah I also called. The rep put me on hold to do some research on it and read it . It's something all reps doesn't know about yet. You have to the end of the month to do so. I have the option to switch it out to another device or just return it for a free refund. He made sure that was stated on my account for me to not have problems.

I don't see a future with note 7 in hand. I do love the phone., hope it's not recalled again but its not looking good.
At leaset in the next few weeks we will have a few more phone choices...... unlike last month. I am thinking of.jumping to the V20 if a 2nd recall happens
This really sucks because I've fallen in love with my Note 7. There's not even any other phone on AT&T that I would get with the exception of the S7 edge. I'm really hoping this guy turns out to be a scam artist.

I know. I might jump ship. The carrier's have to know something. Since when does AT&T reach out to Android Central to tell them they are also on board with the device turn in.
I feel there is little choice but to change. It's only a matter of time before the next report of a burning replacement and good luck selling this second hand in the future . I will try the v20. I wish I had kept my Note5 and not lost $350 on selling it.

I just feel this phone will be at the bottom.of the pile like a non flagship budget. For cases, accessories, updates ect... . Not many people are on board with the note 7, if there is no recall not many will be on board with all the bad press. So why would anyone put any effort or invest money/more products into the note 7. Speaking. Of, we will surely not see a functional.curved glass SP. In my line of work tempered sp is a must. One reason why I may go v20, same.screen real estate as the note 7 but not curved so SP will actually stay on.
The note 7 and bogo deal was the only reason I upgraded and added a phone to my plan. Samsung had no other device I want so now I may get screwed out of the bogo and have to pay more each month than I had originally planned and I can't take back my note 5 now, which I gave to our functioning disabled son
Its absolutely tragic that this is happening. I really wanted this device to be my go to for the next couple of years. Its my first phone since the Note 4 was released and its a beast! I guess in the race to create a flagship like this Samsung has finally cut too many corners. It seems to me that the inherent design of the battery and the chassis just aren't optimal. They should have spent a bit more time on the battery enclosure and possibly reduced the battery capacity slightly to compensate for the tight tolerances. Im not even really sure that would have done anything to help. But anyhow, I think the rest of the community will probably feel the pain. I have already started looking at other devices, leaning (for the first time in 8 years) towards another iPhone. Or I can go to the Pixel xl. Everything other than the Note 7 released this year has been such a let down though.

For sure! Yikes, I believe that steam and heat actually causes the rubber seals to loosen a bit. Its one of the only ways that you can actually get water damage on these devices other than taking them too deep in the water. Sorry bud, Im sure you can still give it back though when/if you decide too. lol
So it's not normal for the loudspeaker to sound like crap after? It seems like it's back to normal now.

check for battery measurements when you first get the phone and check again after you have reviewed other details, just cause you wouldn't wanna get stuck with a phone that has a bad battery ( which might happen cause of the early shut off issues reported here ) if it is a bad battery you can buy an after market one and that will fix the issue but you can sway seller for a better price
check the volume and power buttons and ensure that it has click and are fully functional
check head phone jack for audio
check charger port for any damage
ask seller if it has the early shut down issue and if so since when and at what percentage does it do it on.
ask seller if he has orignal proof of purchase he can provide so in case of a warranty claim you can get a hold of that POP which he can black out as all they need is a picture of the receipt .
make sure to ask where the device was purchased from.
does the screen work fine?? go on google.com and see if theres any abnormalities against the white back ground.
do the speakers work>>?
how about the cameras??
does it make phone calls with no mic or headset issues?
hope this helps.
TBH, I wouldn't buy a 6P. Many of them are having battery issues right now, and unless it still has warranty support and/or was purchased from the Google store, it will be really annoying. May I ask what you'll be paying for it? That may change my mind, but I would wait for the G6, S8 or the Pixel to drop and get one of those instead.
I've loved my 6P, but it's now outdated since Google isn't really supporting it anymore with the Pixel out and the widespread battery issues.
edit: the guy above me has a good post on what to look for. you may want to use swappa to make sure the imei number hasn't been reported for anything. https://swappa.com/esn

I've loved my 6P, but it's now outdated since Google isn't really supporting it anymore with the Pixel out and the widespread battery issues.
edit: the guy above me has a good post on what to look for. you may want to use swappa to make sure the imei number hasn't been reported for anything. https://swappa.com/esn

check for battery measurements when you first get the phone and check again after you have reviewed other details, just cause you wouldn't wanna get stuck with a phone that has a bad battery ( which might happen cause of the early shut off issues reported here ) if it is a bad battery you can buy an after market one and that will fix the issue but you can sway seller for a better price
check the volume and power buttons and ensure that it has click and are fully functional
check head phone jack for audio
check charger port for any damage
ask seller if it has the early shut down issue and if so since when and at what percentage does it do it on.
ask seller if he has orignal proof of purchase he can provide so in case of a warranty claim you can get a hold of that POP which he can black out as all they need is a picture of the receipt .
make sure to ask where the device was purchased from.
does the screen work fine?? go on google.com and see if theres any abnormalities against the white back ground.
do the speakers work>>?
how about the cameras??
does it make phone calls with no mic or headset issues?
hope this helps.

If you install an app like AccuBattery you can't really measure battery health until you run the phone and do a charge. I've had zero serious issues with my 8 month old 6P but some people have had problems with early battery shutdown, random reboots and the as bad as it sounds boot loop of death. You are taking a chance buying a used 6P as the failure rate for these phones is much worse than it should be. At least one person reported that his early shutdown issue went away after the March update. This is obvious but make sure the phone is unlocked and has any lockscreen security disabled before you purchase it. People have claimed to have purchased locked phones that they couldn't get into on Swappa. I would reboot the phone and see if everything boots up ok and play some music through the speakers. There's not really much you can do beforehand to tell if the phone is a lemon. You are basically relying on the honesty of the seller to disclose if there are problems are not. You definitely want to verify that the phone is up and running before handing over any money. Good luck.

that is quite a bit tbh. You could probably get a used s7 edge for that amount.
6p is nice but build quality isn't all that great. I got screen burn in pretty quickly too (from the soft keys), which I've never had on any phone before.
Find out the manufacturing date
I wouldn't buy a used 6P without any warranty. Just too many potential issues.

290 for a one year 6P but 32, 64 or 128GB?
The price of used and new 6P have increased like crazy (for reference https://keepa.com/#!product/1-B019TWO6WM). I bought my 32GB 350 euros (EU is generaly more expensive) in August last year.
I love it but it's only 8 months old and there are 2 problems that affect some users after around 1y:
1/ early battery degradation with a workaround to buy and change the battery. You can calibrate the battery and check with accubattery how much it reports. Under 2700mAh the battery is officially considered End Of Life by the OEM
2/ the other is boot loop of death with no known workaround. You have a 290$ brick.
I wouldn't put more than 200 on a 32GB. And knowing the potential problems mentioned above, I'm not even sure I would by a 1y 6P.

It's supposed to be a really good phone, I would definitely get one
I bought a brand new 6P 3 weeks ago ($500) and haven't looked back or regretted. It's still really one of the top Android phones most specifically from an Android development perspective. Octos ROM with Flash kernel with substratum mods is all I need at the moment to make this thing what I need.
Maybe in several months or a year the battery gets shot, but by then I'll be ready to move on to a new device. This was to replace my Nexus 6 which I almost literally hacked to death, killed the battery. The Verizon Pixel can't be unlocked-rooted now, so the 6P was my choice. If you get a non-Verizon Pixel and want to root, then maybe that's the device to get. Huge bezel though - ouch can't get over that and the Iphone-like hardware.
To each his/her own!!

IPhone hardware is great though. When you hold it it feels like a very premium device. Apple and Samsung are making the most consistent and well made phones imo. I like both personally. Even if you hate apple, there is no denying they do a good job on the hardware. So many phones have large bezels, however that will be a thing of the past soon enough.
That being said, the 6p is a great phone no doubt and I don't think anyone said otherwise. For the money he is spending though he could afford something better imo.
It was great for the price, it is nearing EOL though

From what I've read, 7.1.1 Verizon Pixel XL bootloader cannot be unlocked as of earlier this month, but perhaps that's changed recently.

Wow that's horrible that would totally defeat the purpose of having a "nexus" (I know it's pixel but still same concept, pure android device)

Yep, that's why i didn't get it since I'm on Verizon. And didn't want to spend so much $$$ for a device with hardware and form that didn't work for me. Can you imagine a google phone that you can't mod? Nope. :silly:
