3.5mm audio socket issue (design or manufacturing defect??) - Zuk Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Calling from all ZUK Z1 owners:fingers-crossed:
I bought a ZUK Z1 (international version) a short 2 week ago, and was excited. Generally, it's as good as a $400 phone I could expect EXCEPT one serious (or not at all, depending on how you want to use smart phone nowaday):
NONE of my 4 pairs of 3.5 mm headphone(/earbuds, with 4-conductor TRRS phone connector ) can be fully inserted into the socket (about 1mm left out), the result? Only inline volume up/pause/mic control of those headphone work, but not the volume down button
Since I can't get hands on another Z1, I am not sure is this just an isolated case of my Z1, or a design or manufacture defect of Z1 ?
Anyone has the same issue as I do??

bump

I've subscribed to the thread and will help you out the moment I get my hands on the Zuk Z1 (posted and waiting arrival from overseas)
May be over a week before I receive it though, but if there's no progress in this thread by then I'll be sure to plug some head phones in and post a reply here. Hopefully there's more responses by then, I'm very curious.

I don't have headphones with 4 conductors, the more I have is 3 and it seems that the socket will just arrive on the fourth black plastic ring with a 4 connectors headphones

Apparently this is the case for mine...:crying::crying::crying:

It's not a bug, it's a hardware defect. Bluetooth isn't as good quality as 3.5mm connections, some people like quality.

first of all: I say bug. they exists software and hardware bug, aka defects.
and also, isn't a major problem. the phone is in your pocket. why don't use your fingers to up/down the volume?
note: I don't pretend to be a troll; is just it doesn't seems too important

Agreed... whatever we call it, and yes, from an user's perspective, such an issue really is not a major problem at all, as there are solutions/workarounds for it: such as yours, or using the soft slider from the pulldown menu if the hardware buttons on the phone are not functional either.
The purpose of my post is not for finding a solution for my needs, but wanted to verify with other Zuk Z1 owners and see if it's just a rare case, or it's indeed a born defect of ZUK Z1. The latter could be a big deal for a startup company...or maybe not.

Pretty much accurate. Fyi though, "bug" refers solely to software. Defect, flaw, imperfection etc could be used to describe hardware but "bug" is a software terminology. I could explain how the term came to be but honestly.. Who can be bothered listening to that? Pretty sure you lost interest in this message the very moment you realised I was correcting you about something you didn't give two sh*ts about :good:

Tried the only cable headset that I have located at my house.
It only can control the volume (by a slide, not by buttons) and is working fine to up/down the volume.

received my zuk z1 international version (from amazon germany) couple days ago. I have beats solo 2 and I cannot change the volume using the inline buttons. I can stop, start, forward the track but no volume control. Not sure if this is specific to Zuk since I just tried on oneplus 2 and it's behaving the same way, although the pin goes all the way down on my Oneplus 2. I guess at this point we need to figure out if this issue is due to the pin not going all the way down or there is something else hampering this functionality.

Hi , my ZUK was previously ZUI with such a system ordered , after a change to the CM and previously ZUI had no problem with volume. Regards.

Thanks for the info. I will try it out on mine when I get a similar headphone set. BTW, would you mind to confirm if the plug of your headset can be inserted all way down into the Z1's audio socket, as it would do on your other phones?
Thank you!

no issues on mine either. but there is low volume bug but i just received an update maybe its fixed now, will let you know.

I've also noticed that my headphone plug doesn't go all the way to the end. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that though.
Also when I have my headphones plugged in and using the phone (basically doing anything with it that uses processor even a little) I can hear some "crackling" sound/noise from my headphones.

Mic Problems

Hi Everybody,
My Magician recently developed an annoying problem and I wonder if anyone had this already:
The internal Mic occasionally goes to a very low sensitivity, i.e., when talking on the phone I have to scream so that the other person can hear me. This is also valid when recording a voicememo - on the playback I hear mostly static with a faint voice in the background.
Next, when using the headset, the voicememo records Ok but when talking on the phone, the other guy ears mostly the electromagnetic noise of the GSM (a loud "RRRRRRRRRRR").
I have noticed that this effect of the headset is started when the battery voltage goes below 3.4V and, as i connect the charger, the effect disapears.
I cannot relate the effects on the internal mic with the battery charge though; it seems to be more random....
It definitely is Hardware...but could it be solved maybe with a new battery?!
Any hunches?
Thanxs!
that is actually aproblem faced by all magician users. mine too worked just fine for firts 6 months then this annoying problem arose.
others could barely hear me.
i tried every sort of registry tweak, cleaned the mic and other thing but still nothing fruitful happened.
one fine day in an attempt to fx the internal mic myself i broke it (there is hardly any service backup for o2 devices here in New Delhi)
since then either i don't use it or use it with a bluetooth handsfree. no problems with bluetooth handsfree.
Yep, That´s right: No problem with the Bluetooth, but is just annoying to have to worry about carrying the BT device all the time and being always worried about its battery state - not to mention that I already lost one...
My guess is that the Analog-to-Digital Mic Chip is failing, or some part of the Mic circuit before that, or even the power suply to the said Chip....
That's just a lot of guessed troubleshooting to do without the knowledge of the elecronic circuit itself.
BTW, I just read your post about the mic problem - Did you have the problem as well with the wired headphones?
Thanks.

no! i don't face any problem with bundled earphones or even nokia stereo earphones or a bt handsfree even if i talk from a distance.
problem is only with internal mic.
i would suggest not to try anything yourself on the board. u may ruin ur device like me.
and yes, its annoying to carry tha bt set all the time. thats why i seldom use this devica anymore...i use it only as a mp3 player paired with sony mdr-e808 earphones and equalizer app. the sound is very crisp and punchy.

Faisal is very right buddy......it is purely jumper problem. I attached a snap of my Cell for you.......See the arrow... It is mic and we have to put the black color jumper on it.... Actually what happen with us.... we don't pay much importance to that jumper... there is a tiny whole on that jumper, put that whole on the head of mic so that our voice waves travel inside the jumper and go into mic.
It is my own experience that I put wrong side of jumper on mic and got panic three times . Thanks Faisal.....

DUH!
nooooooooooo!
i meant a pure jumper solution silly!...
the jumper solution is a quoted wire or in combination solded n jumped from the main sources or the parts in between to make a proper current flow in case of any resistance in between, loose or broken connection.
unfortunately the solution i was supposed to provide was scheduled that night is delayed due to some very sudden technical reasons. And for this i really apologize.
ill try to be as prompt as i can but the time cannot be defined so please forgive me for bringing hope and than delaying it. i know exactly how it feels but hey... patience can be more fruitful

You are right Faisal......... but I told everything which I demonstrated...... And I solved the problem.... It can be possible that other people also did the same mistake which I did.... They can check their mic cover, as long as you can’t provide them any solution. Right??
For the main problem of the buzz noise when calling: I had it too. And it became gradually louder, more louder. And then (it became REALLY insopportable: when in call even the main speaker emitted that noise, and considerably loud) my phone resetted. It decided to not woken up unless I took the Sim out, and that was the end of my phone (the "phone" part: I used it as an expensive mp3 for quite a while). The noise was so loud that also attempting to connect to the carrier caused soft reset. Searching around I discovered that noise to be related to RF leakage.. you have been warned folks

Clicking noise though device is muted?

I noticed that even though the phone is muted and all sounds are off, sometimes there is a clicking noise coming from the speaker when I press buttons that would normally make a noise IF the phone wasn't muted. Is that common?
I've noticed this too, it seems to be a very quiet clicking sound though, and its kind of intermittent, it only happens every 3 or 4 clicks.
Yes, thats correct!
Have you been able to find a fix?
I first commented on this issue on the official CM10.1 thread but realized it was off-topic to do so.
For me, turning off click sounds in Settings fixes the issue although if you put it on Sound or Vibrant mode, you won't be able to hearing any clicks

Im having this issue as well, anyone been able to find a fix ? anyone using a custom rom that makes this go away ?
Me too. Both N4s.
[LG NEXUS⁴] [CARBON] [MATR1X]
i have it too.
and thing that comes to my mind. as you all know speaker on N4 is constantly buzzing (due to bad electric isolation or smth like that)
so could it be that touching the device makes some kind of electrical interference (i dont know how to express what i mean) and we hear it through the speaker ?

Annoying 4.4 Bluetooth Bug

Bluetooth overall is working much better except for the fact that I can not control my Logitech UE Boombox volume with the nexus hardware volume keys. Or in software for that matter. I never had this issue before, and it appears to be that device only at this point. I have a HMDX Jam Plus that doesnt suffer from the same affliction.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

UE seems to have a firmware update out for the Boom, see if that fixes it for you.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately (for me), I have the UE Boombox, not boom. I do not think it is firmware upgaradable. Hopefully google will fix this small bug though.

People with Microphone Problem

Hello
I made this thread so people like me, with microphone problems while we are talking on a phone, gather and disguise different solutions and tips.
Just some info about this problem for those who don't have it or who aren't sure.

When we talk to the phone, the other party complain that they can't hear us well, like we are on the other side of the room. But It's not a hardware problem because If we record something on mono channel(uses only bottom mic) the mic works GREAT!
We paid for a flagship phone!
Known Solutions till now:1. Disable Noice Cancelling Suppression (Settings->Call->Noice Cancelling Suppression)..... Didn't really work for me
2. Use @Allodi's solution (Link) .....I tested it with my landline phone and it was working pretty good but some people complained about cracking sounds..
Feel Free to post if you have the same problem!
I got this exact problem since day 1.

It's hardware problem. Coz i have this problem too.
I was sent to sony center and they fixed it. Until now it's fine and no problem with microphone anymore.
But if it out of warranty try root and edit some value in mixer_paths file.

here my thread..
**anyway microphone noisecancelling suppression can't work well.. (Here it's a software problem) when turn it on another side will can't hear you well (sound too low level)
Not hardware problem, I have had 4 Z2s so far (due to the camera not being aligned issue mainly) and I have noticed it only happens when I wash the phone and till 6 or so hours after washing it.

How can it be a hardware problem since recording works good?
Maybe older Z2s have some kind of different mic which conflict with the software?

In my case except handset it has no problem at all such as recording, VOIP (LINE CALL, FB Messenger and other) .
I have only problem at handset during call with dialer.
See in my thread it's only boost handset during call. Not boost another sound.
Try factory reset and repair the firmware if it still has this problem that's a hardware problem.
Note : don't turn on noise cancelling suppression.

If it is still in warranty. Or you can pay a bit.
Try send to Sony Center for repair this problem.
If it is out of warranty.
Try root and do replace my mixer_paths. You can see it in my thread.
Recommended : send to repair.
*How can i check when i call to other ppl or other ppl call to me.
Install call recorder app.
In my case I'm use ACR.
When you call just speak like normal and when it is end open this app and listen it.
*sound of your side will same level of other side.
If you listen your sound well and it same as other side then your pair has a speaker problem. Not your mic.
If your sound nasty or low level and other side is well then it is your mic problem.
- Sorry for my bad english.

I have same mic problem
Phone is batch 14W17. I have sent my phone to Sony service two times. First time just "software upgrade" was made which did not fix anything at all. Second time they changed microphone+some other component(can't remember what) and it seemed to be working much better for couple months, no complains from other end of the call. BUT recently my Z2's microphone problem has come back as worse as it was before. I'm concidering to have it sent to be repaired again. I guess there must be some bigger flaw in design or whatever.. What do you think?
Unfortunately Z2 is the most defective flagship from sony
Here I made a list of problems:
1.Low mic during call
2.Gaps in chasis
3.Off centre camera lens 4.or camera flash
5.Back glass separating from frame in top right corner
All most every z2 has at least one or two of this problem , my first z2 had every of these problems
This is my sixth z2 and finally is aclright except really small gap in button left corner
Odoslané z HUAWEI U8815 pomocou Tapatalku
Right, here's a really simple solution. Hold the phone correctly.
I've had this problem myself when I first used the phone and people were complaining that my voice was faint, that I was hard to hear and the reason? Two problems, the 1st, noise cancellation. The noise cancellation feature is rather aggressive and it was also compounded by the issue that I was holding the phone straight down meaning the microphone was pointing to my neck. So I disabled noise cancellation and I readjusted how I held my phone so that the microphone was in-line with my mouth (raising it 45º).
This is a long phone and the microphone is at the bottom of the phone.
There is the possibility of hardware failure but usually, you'll experience the microphone not working in other applications too.
(For reference my phone is a 14W15 device)
I sent my phone for a repair 10 days ago and I received it yesterday.
I can confirm it's a hardware problem since it is working pretty good now.
Now the problem is the noice cancelling problem, why hasn't sony resolve it already?
Problem with mic Fixed in my Z2
I had the same issue: the mic didn't work and only produce noise when call, and I tried everything I found except the root fix. But I solved the problem by connecting my earphones and try Google search while connected, it worked, then I unplugged the earphones and the phone mic was working again like a charm
I used the Sony diagnose tool and everything was Ok
I hope it help.
Sorry for my bad english.
it only happens with aosp in my xperia z2 no with other rom, not hardware problem.

[A2017G] Bottom speaker louder than top speaker

STILL NOT FIXED
I have rooted and unlocked my Axon 7 (A2017G) and edited the mixer_paths.xml file to make the audio output louder.
But there's a little problem (and I don't know if it's because of the mixer paths edit, I don't think so)
My top speaker sounds a lot more dull than my bottom speaker. My bottom speakers seem to be louder too.
How to check this? And are there more people experiencing this?
Thanks in advance.
Did not do anything to my A2017G, but I find that my top speaker is louder and "sparks" when near at full volume

Some say it's dust, but I don't know how. I haven't called with this phone much.
Bump. It's everywhere. Even on LineageOS, bottom speaker is almost twice as loud :/ It can't be dust.
BUMP
This problem is getting on my nerves. The bottom speaker is twice as loud and crispy as the top speaker, which sounds dull.
Anyone else had this and possibly fixed it?
Two questions
Did you try to reset your phone and test the speakers again?
Is there the same problem on YouTube and mp3 music files?

1. Yes I switched between roms to test modems and other stuff for ZTE.
2. Ofcourse. It's obviously the same on every output.
I guess it's just a hardware fault, but I thought maybe someone would have fix (clean it or something?)
Then I would say that this is an hardware problem indeed.
Having the same issue here, thought that other ROM will provide the fix but still zilch. Rooting the phone only meant the void of guarantee so not really good move there either.
I read somewhere online that usually bottom speaker is the one to go out first and that global version has the speakers a lot different then American and Chinese version). Any other possible fixes before replacing it? And where to find the replacement too?
Update: it should be software related since the sound in earphones has the same problem - only inverted. Which means there should be a tweak in binary or something?
I'm willing to pay to whoever makes this problem disappear. I'm beyond the point of helplessness here...
Fixed!
Fixed the issue finally! ??

Can't believe I can now finally listen to music the way it was intented, since having a speaker with lower volume on a stereo setup is very annoying. Thank you very much for sharing the solution with us!
