What brought me to buying the Honor 7 - Honor 7 General

Hi everybody.
Probably this is useful for some of you. I just decided this month to buy an Honor 7. I ordered it on Oct 16 on the vMall website and received it on Oct 20 delivered to my place in Germany, so much quicker than I expected after reading about several delays and seeing a lot of online shops out of stock.
Before getting to this point of ordering it, I made a lot of thoughts and compared different devices. I have put those into the following list to get an overview. Since I received my new device two more devices were announced which I would have taken into account, whereby I don't expect that those would have changed my decision - these are the OnePlus X and the Honor 5X, which are from my perspective direct competitors of the Wileyfox Storm, which are all more mid-class then high-class devices. In mid-class range probably the Wileyfox would be my first choice. The HTC A9 is also interesting, but considering it's price and the super weak battery, I would not even create a column for that device.
https://goo.gl/uzqEa8
Devices included:
Nexus 5X
Nexus 6P
Wileyfox Storm
OnePlus 2
Honor 7
LG G4
Motorola X Play
After using my Honor 7 for roughly a week now, I am absolutely satisfied. Till now I still use it without the Nova Launcher, which means that I use the EMUI interface which has no app drawer. Something I still need to get used to especially as I fear to lose overview at a certain point, but I give it a chance first. Apart of that I'm pretty happy, the SmartKey is from my perspective more beneficial than I expected it to be and the fingerprint gestures are a nice gimmick, which makes using the device a little bit more comfortable.
Apart of that I've also faced some minor issues on the OS, but I already read before that there are some minor issues open and I hope that Honor (or rather Huawei) will fix them at some point, e.g. for several whatsapp messages I get several notifications instead of just one merged saying that I have X new messages. Anyway, all are just minor and for now I didn't face anything which would make me revoke my decision.
Hope this little support thread helps some of you in taking the best decision for yourself
If you got any questions on this overview or on the devices and why I decided for the Honor 7 and not any other, let me know.

I don't know if it will help, because most of people have the honor7 when they come on the honor thread. But it's kind of you to see how you managed to buy this phone

2. The phone has great specs all-around. All-metal design, fingerprint sensor, 8-core Snapdragon 615, etc.

Questions From A Nexus User

Hello Everyone,
I've been a long time fan of Google's Nexus phones, but with the large Pixel price-tag, I'm starting to at least consider other things. I'm hoping that someone can help by answering a few questions that I'm having trouble finding:
How is OnePlus with RMA / warranty issues? I've heard they're not the greatest with QA, albeit this was a while ago, but it's still a concern for me.
How is OnePlus with software updates? One of the reasons I stuck with the Nexus lineup was because of timely updates. Is OnePlus likely to stay current, or will Oreo take forever?
The $479 model is out of stock. How long does it take for them to usually replenish supply?
Will Android Auto work in a 2017 Civic EX-L? I've heard conflicting things from different cars out there.
If there are any other Nexus/Pixel people out there that could give their thoughts about the transition from stock Android to something different that would be great.
Thanks.

Coming from my first ever Android phone, the Nexus 6P, to my second, Pixel XL, and now the 5, it's a great device to move to!
Regarding RMAs
I bought this OP5 a while back, when I still had my Pixel XL and decided to return it just because I couldn't justify having both the XL and this at the same time. I later on decided to sell my XL to get max value for it, before the Pixel 2 came out. The return process was pretty simple for me, and they only deducted 4.99 out of the entire cost (for shipping). That's the only RMA/return experience I've had with them so that's all I can really say about it!
Software updates
They just came out with a new update that moved from (I think July) to September security patches and other various fixes/optimizations. They aren't as fast as Google, and a lot of users aren't too fond of that, but I'm not even on stock OOS so it's a non-issue for me. As for Oreo, I have no idea, sorry
Stock
Not too sure about this either, the first time I bought it, it had just released so I had to wait about 1.5 weeks for it to ship out, and the second time I bought it, it shipped out the next day, and arrived the day after that!
As for Android Auto, I don't use it so I can't help with that either, sorry!!
General thoughts
OOS is almost stock Android with a few nice additional features, so coming from Nexus/Pixel, I think you'll like that! Having hardware keys is nice as it gives you some screen back, battery life is awesome, can't tell the difference between 1440p and 1080p so screen is also awesome
Give it a try, again, I think you'll love it! I hope the info I was able to provide was of some help and hopefully other users can answer the questions I wasn't able to
I have the 3, 3T and 5. But outside of the 3, which I paid full retail for ($399.99), I have managed to score the others at big discounts. I got the 3T for $395.00 and the 5 for $416.00. Despite a 5-10% performance bump in each iteration, the difference between each device is marginal. Bottom line, I don't feel that the phone is worth what they are asking for it. Service was always good here in the US (for me), but I heard plenty of horror stories about OnePlus service. Most of those stories came from India, so this may be a regional thing. Software update have always been fast and timely for me, not so much for those that had previous models though. I am sorry, but I cannot answer your question about Android Auto, as I haven't used that, but I hope some of these things are of help to you in making your decision.
I can't really answer your questions I just got this phone a day ago, sold my s8 to get this.
Experience is much better then my s8. And honestly the fluidity and smoothness remind me of my Nexus 5.
So far I've been nothing but impressed.
Man, now both of them are sold out. I was planning on getting the 64gb version, but even with my student discount it's an ouch to my wallet >_< I wish I could try it before I buy it; I'm slightly concerned about the jelly scroll issue and other small issues that have cropped up here lately.

Sent my 6P in for repair, got a Mate 9

Hello,
so I am in a little dilemma.
After 20 months of using my Nexus 6p, I experienced the battery issue. I went to my carrier and they sent it in for repair. They told me it is a warranty issue.
Today, after 5 weeks of waiting, I was notified that my device is ready and I went to the store to get it.
However, I did not get my beloved Nexus 6P, instead they gave me the Huawei Mate 9. The paper I had to sign said "Motherboard changed/Replacement". The guy in the store told me, the Nexus 6P is not available anymore so they got me this, because "it's better".
I am a true believer in Stock Android and I have never used anything different from Stock Android. I like getting the newest features and updates from Google, being able to easily flash and modify my device. Also, I am a dev for native Android apps.
So there are two options in my eyes:
Keep the Mate 9
Sell the Mate 9 and maybe wait another 4 weeks for the Pixel 2 XL (considering I can even sell the untouched Mate 9 for a good price?)
What would you do? I am from Austria btw.
Best,
brnhrd

Why not head over to the XDA section for this phone and hang out a while to see what the current issues are? Mate 9 will never have the same level of community support, or direct updates from Google, but it may be a solid phone with support from several ROM/Kernel devs. The Mate 9 (64gb) is available in the US for $400, so even if you get a "new" price for it (you may get a refurb) you still have quite a deficit to cover if you are wanting a Pixel 2... or even Pixel 1. I'd keep an open mind and play with the phone for a while before making a decision. You can always wipe and sell.

Thank you for the reply.
The Mate 9 that I received is still in its original packaging, with the plastic foil around it. I did not yet dare to remove that foil and open it. I thought it would lead to less value when I wanted to resell...
The features I also miss with the Mate 9 are:
that higher resolution and beautiful amoled display from the 6p
the stereo speakers
the camera too I guess
Such a hard decision.

A lot is riding on how much you can get for it on the market there. If it was not explicitly represented as new, then it is refurbished. If you can't point to anything on the receipt or box that says NEW, then the value is greatly diminished already. The 64 gb Pixel 2 XL is $850 plus tax in the U.S. ($920).... and will be more to you in Austria. The (new) Mate 9 can be purchased here for $400. ($433).

What's your ETA for the Android O update?

So, a few sources say that our devices will receive the Android O update very soon and to pass the time, why not share our expected or assumed OTA roll-out dates? I think that we will receive the update by the end of this month. What about you?
Agreed. I think they will probably release a rollback package or something like that with the original firmware to go along with it (7.0).

It's ironic how you say this topic is irrelevant when you only reply with, "it's coming" which indicates absolutely nothing. This is a thread for everyone's expected ETA as the official rollout date is still unannounced. On another note, hopefully I won't deal with dense users like I did on the Le 2 forums, shudders.

From everything that I've read and taking Honor's past into consideration I think we may have to wait until March, which makes little to sense to me.
Why isn't Honor putting a little more effort into marketing this device? I've bought a half a dozen so far, primarily for friends that were still using phones from 3-5 years ago. They all love it and of course, coming from older devices, they feel like this device is a flagship!
Only real thing I miss is NFC, but my watch has it. 2.4 GHz is what I use for everything but my video streaming devices. I really could care less it still has a MicroUSB port.

Your Comments Caught My Eye...
You seem to be a very Nice and Thoughtful friend.. To purchased not only 1 of these devices for yourself.. but to gift over $1,200.00 U.S.D. / 985 EURO's to friends to update their devices.. is truly a friend indeed :good:
Since you are obviously a man of means... what brought you to this budget device in the Honor 7X ?
It's certainly not the fastest..
Or.. has the best display...
Or.. the most RAM..
Why not the View 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, One Plus 5T, Pixel, S8, Note 8 ???
What brought a man of your means to the Honor 7X.. I'm really curious to know if you don't mind sharing..
As a software developer I own a plethora of devices and usually carry a minimum of 2 devices. Generally I am very conscious of the condition of my devices and despite the fact the majority of them never leave an office environment, they are all plastered in screen protectors and cases, it seems like they become more fragile every year. The S8 has been my secondary to my Pixel XL 2 since I got it, but as soon as I received the Honor 7X I put the S8 in the drawer. The 7X runs naked and I'm not worried about dropping it. It has enough of what I need. I run package Disabler and remove most of EMUI and Huawei's bloat, with Pixel launcher installed, I have a very close to stock Android on a rugged unit that's as tough as a 90s Nokia!

Best Updates Company to get Away from Motonovo???

Just overall question to evrerybody...omce we Get Stock Oreo...I am giving away this device to a relative and I will buy a new one than can ensure to me I will get Android P by Dec.18 or Jan19....sooooo the question in...if we can rate from top to bettom which company we may go with.....
LG
Sony
Samsung
Xiaomi
****ty Motonovo
HTC
Google.
Huaweii
Any other else.....
Lets help us all....brother!!!
Personally I think I will go back to HTC mid range or high end.
In this moment, I would say Nokia is the best company giving updates, almost pairing to the Google pixel devices, but since it's not In your list I would go with Google, Sony or HTC, but if you can buy a Nokia device it would be better (than Sony or HTC I mean)
Nokia right now is probably the best and of course Google as well, but Sony gives a really good support to their devices, I had the xperia xa1 and they gave me update every month and oreo update in february of this year... but then I got rid of the phone because it has some touchscreen problems... Anyway, you can choose this three brands... and HTC for me it's dead in mid range, probably you will have to buy high end for getting a good support...
cheers!
Just be aware that, at the moment, Nokia Android devices do not appear to have an official bootloader unlocked method. I do not know if this may change as some devices reach the end of support (in about 2 years time), but something to be aware of if you prefer custom ROMs.
What about any of the devices on the Android One program? (e.g. Moto X4 - Fi version, Xiaomi Mi A1) as regardless of OEM, they should be providing you with 2 OS updates/3 years of security patches as standard?
Nokia is the best option. Sadly no bootloader unlock But atleast you get updates pretty fast, so for ME it shouldn't be a problem.
Go with android one or oneplus
Nokia or Xiaomi
Android One is available with both- All Nokias, some Xiaomis (Mi A1)
Miui update support is also great, never out of security patches or features
Sometimes they dont update Android Version but features, security updates are good enough

Seems that Huawei and honor by extension do not offer bootloader unlocking on new devices anymore (with a grace period for existing devices to get your unlock code). https://www.xda-developers.com/huawei-stop-providing-bootloader-unlock-codes/
I don't know if this will get reversed, though I would not be surprised if more OEMs decline to offer bootloader unlocking in the future.
In the same boat.
I'm not buying another Motorola phone, they've lost me as a customer.
Anyhow as above.
Google pixel phones are best, albeit expensive.
Nokia Android One 2018 phones
Sony give good updates too.

As Huawei stops their bootlader unlocking program and also is worse in case of updating their devices and Nokia doesn't have an unlocking program at all there are only two OEMs I would buy a device from:
Google and One Plus. But both are above my budget, I'm the kind of person that is not willing to pay for a brand and has an upper limit for something like a smartphone. Motorola was the best choice for me. And if Xiaomi starts to sell their devices in Europe (they do atm) and delivers better quality and more vanilla like android they could be a choice too in the future.
UntiI than I stay with Moto and hope that Lenovo don't decide to cancel their bootlader unlocking service too. A non rootable device is the Nr.1 deal breaker for me.

I'm in a similar position - though I don't need a bootloader unlock, having the option there for the eventual day when support/patches ends is a considerable bonus for a certain purchase in my view.
Despite the patchy update schedule, Motorola is still an OEM I'd still consider - my XT1642, a G4 Plus, is still going strong and is proving durable. The updates I've received for my device have been stable, if slow to arrive. I can live with that - I rather prefer having a reliable working device rather than the very newest updates (might explain why I grew tired of custom ROMs...). Might be worth considering the One Power being an Android One platform and the Z series, as they appear to have regular updates.
I am considering the Samsung Galaxy A6+ (AMOLED screen, hopefully good camera, though Samsung Touchwiz), the Sony Xperia XA2 (good updates, the camera appears to give images a cool tint? Also unlocking seems to destroy the DRM keys so your camera quality declines), Nokia 7 Plus (Android One and good feature set, though as previously discussed no bootloader unlock) and Moto Z2 Play at the moment (don't need Moto mods!). Of these devices, the Z2 Play appears to have pretty good support on XDA - the Galaxy is too new and the XA2 appears to not have a dedicated XDA page...
I'm amazed at the obsession level expressed regarding updates for our phones, whether stock, oreo and custom roms supplying oreo.
The disrespectful behaviour demanding updates, not even bothering to search or read threads, a great example is volte, browsing the G5 plus forum should sound alarm bells ringing for anyone who relies on that system for communication, why would you risk installing a custom rom if there is a good chance you will not have telephony working, that's why they are called phones, that also applies to the imei lost issues.
And getting it into every ones head, backing up is the first thing to be done if thinking of modifying any computer system as a fail-safe.
For me there are way too many noobs, who cannot be arsed to read anything bar a direct answer to their "asked many times questions", gone are the days when xda was for enthusiastic testers, who could specify and isolate bugs in collaboration with developers.
Last but not least, the forums are a mess, multiple cross posting, duplicating existing, no faq's the list is endless.
Anyway I like my G5 plus, think its a great value phone, especially with nfc for payment, which does get used daily.
Regards
Ray
Nokia Google or Sony....think Google the best option thanks to everybody
