Hello Everyone,
I've been a long time fan of Google's Nexus phones, but with the large Pixel price-tag, I'm starting to at least consider other things. I'm hoping that someone can help by answering a few questions that I'm having trouble finding:
How is OnePlus with RMA / warranty issues? I've heard they're not the greatest with QA, albeit this was a while ago, but it's still a concern for me.
How is OnePlus with software updates? One of the reasons I stuck with the Nexus lineup was because of timely updates. Is OnePlus likely to stay current, or will Oreo take forever?
The $479 model is out of stock. How long does it take for them to usually replenish supply?
Will Android Auto work in a 2017 Civic EX-L? I've heard conflicting things from different cars out there.
If there are any other Nexus/Pixel people out there that could give their thoughts about the transition from stock Android to something different that would be great.

Coming from my first ever Android phone, the Nexus 6P, to my second, Pixel XL, and now the 5, it's a great device to move to!
Regarding RMAs
I bought this OP5 a while back, when I still had my Pixel XL and decided to return it just because I couldn't justify having both the XL and this at the same time. I later on decided to sell my XL to get max value for it, before the Pixel 2 came out. The return process was pretty simple for me, and they only deducted 4.99 out of the entire cost (for shipping). That's the only RMA/return experience I've had with them so that's all I can really say about it!
Software updates
They just came out with a new update that moved from (I think July) to September security patches and other various fixes/optimizations. They aren't as fast as Google, and a lot of users aren't too fond of that, but I'm not even on stock OOS so it's a non-issue for me. As for Oreo, I have no idea, sorry

Not too sure about this either, the first time I bought it, it had just released so I had to wait about 1.5 weeks for it to ship out, and the second time I bought it, it shipped out the next day, and arrived the day after that!
As for Android Auto, I don't use it so I can't help with that either, sorry!!
General thoughts
OOS is almost stock Android with a few nice additional features, so coming from Nexus/Pixel, I think you'll like that! Having hardware keys is nice as it gives you some screen back, battery life is awesome, can't tell the difference between 1440p and 1080p so screen is also awesome
Give it a try, again, I think you'll love it! I hope the info I was able to provide was of some help and hopefully other users can answer the questions I wasn't able to

I have the 3, 3T and 5. But outside of the 3, which I paid full retail for ($399.99), I have managed to score the others at big discounts. I got the 3T for $395.00 and the 5 for $416.00. Despite a 5-10% performance bump in each iteration, the difference between each device is marginal. Bottom line, I don't feel that the phone is worth what they are asking for it. Service was always good here in the US (for me), but I heard plenty of horror stories about OnePlus service. Most of those stories came from India, so this may be a regional thing. Software update have always been fast and timely for me, not so much for those that had previous models though. I am sorry, but I cannot answer your question about Android Auto, as I haven't used that, but I hope some of these things are of help to you in making your decision.

I can't really answer your questions I just got this phone a day ago, sold my s8 to get this.
Experience is much better then my s8. And honestly the fluidity and smoothness remind me of my Nexus 5.
So far I've been nothing but impressed.

Man, now both of them are sold out. I was planning on getting the 64gb version, but even with my student discount it's an ouch to my wallet >_< I wish I could try it before I buy it; I'm slightly concerned about the jelly scroll issue and other small issues that have cropped up here lately.

[Q] Have I missed out on the Nexus 4 bandwagon?

Since Android was released, I've been a huge fan and my first Android phone was the HTC G1. All my phones since then have been Android with my current one being the Samsung Galaxy S2. While they have all been great, I have been really disappointed with not having timely Android OS updates. Some updates were skipped while others were delayed to the point that they were no longer the latest version by the time they were released. I then decided that my next phone would be a Nexus device. I was tempted by the Samsung Galaxy S3 when it came out by decided to hold out for the rumoured Nexus 4.
Everything I read about the N4 was looking promising but I'm not one to be an early adopter so when the N4 came out, I decided not to order it and wait for the early adopters to report any issues and make my decision based on that. When the 2nd wave of N4s came out, it was still too early as many people still had not gotten the N4 from the first wave so I decided to hold off yet again. I knew I'd be waiting until after Xmas for when I would likely be able to place my order.
Since early January, I have read a lot of user comments and I feel there is nothing being reported that has put me off. I am now in a position where I would be happy to purchase the N4 if/when it comes back on sale in the UK. I now hear rumours that this may not happen until mid-February. This would be around 3 months after it's initial release which is much longer than I hoped to wait for. I am really confused which way to go on this.
Reasons to skip the N4:
1. Being 3 months in probably means we're about 9 months away from the "Nexus 5". With JB update starting to roll out to the SGS2, I could quite possibly hold off until the N5. Also, there's no guarantee that the N4 supply won't be delayed further.
2. The flaky supply issues could indicate that LG accessories, spares and repairs could be affected as well. Even if available, they may charge a disproportional amount compared to the phone price.
3. I'm intrigued by the rumours of the Motorola X phone.
Reasons to buy the N4:
1. The N4 is still a great phone even if I only get my hands on it in late Feb. I don't use the phone for gaming so the spec of the phone could easily last me 2 years (or whenever I get tempted by another phone).
2. Google and LG have really shaken the market by bringing this phone at such a low price point. I'm hoping it will lead the way for other manufacturers that top end phones shouldn't be such a huge price. Buying the N4 shows my consumer support for this thinking. As a consumer, wouldn't we all love cheaper (top end) phones.
Any thoughts, suggestions?

The only thing REALLY bugging me about the N4 is that google hasn't restocked in over a month.
You said the thing that bothers you most is lack of timely updates. Buy it and be happy.
When the n5 comes out you can sell the n4 with minimal loss. Go for it.

I don't really understand this part, where you basically say "I've waited 3 months for the N4, I'd better wait 9 more to the N5".
You waited until after Christmas before deciding to place the order, so you've actually waited 1 month more than expected as of today. I think that's not that big deal.
In either case you're gonna wait, so why wait more?
Following your line of thought, you should wait 2 months after the N5 launch (if you want to wait for the opinion of the early adopters as you did for the N4) before buying it. This'll make you wait roughly a year from now.
Are you sure the N5 launch will be as smooth as butter? What if the N5 is another really well-built and cheap device... and you have just the whole world waiting to lay their hands on it?
Who says you'll be able to get the Nexus 5 at launch?
To sum it up: waiting for the new Nexus device is not worth the time. The Nexus 4 is an awesome device, buy it (sic)!
And if the Nexus 5 will prove being that much better smartphone, you'll still be able to sell the N4 at a great price and buy the N5 without a hitch.
And if the declarations of LG France are truthful, you'll probably have to wait just one more month before unwrapping your brand new LGE Nexus 4
If you need a new phone get one. Thats the way I roll. I'll use this phone until its old and busted, doesn't hold a charge, Or I crack the screen.
DO you NEED a new phone? Can you afford 350 in throw away cash?
Those are the only two things I can see stopping someone from buying anything.

I was calculating the 3 months wait based upon when I reckon the phone will come back in stock in UK and the earliest I'd get the phone in my hands. However, I do accept your point that if the N5 came out then I wouldn't get it at launch and would be waiting a month or two like I normally do. I guess the frustration of waiting for it to come back in stock made me mis-calculate the timings

I don't "Need" a new phone but I do "really really really want" one. I'm assuming you're talking about $350? In the UK the 16GB is only priced £280 (plus a little for postage). I can definitely afford this amount for the phone.
Ok, thanks for all the comments. My mind is made up, I'm getting the N4 as soon as it comes back in stock in the Play Store. Hopefully the Google Wireless charger will have been launched by then as well so I can have phone + accessories from day 1.
I managed to place my order bang on 3pm went it came back in stock in UK on Wednesday. It's already been delivered at home so I'll get a chance to play with it when I get back. Less than 43 hours from placing order to being delivered is pretty good. Looks like Google has definitely gotten their act together. I also see that they are still in stock showing 1 to 2 weeks shipping (which is what it said when I placed my order) so it's all looking very positive.

Hahah this thread is a fail/tool/troll nothing is bandwagon about the nexus 4, without forums you wouldn't have known about it..and BTW the gs3/note 2 are bandwagon devices...so what if its been out for 3 months its only been available 3 times since release...not even iPhone or any device has sold like that

There's nothing negative about the term bandwagon (definition: joining a growing movement in support of someone or something). In my eyes it is a bandwagon as more and more people are starting to realise the benefit of a Pure Google Experience device.

Comparing based on the number of times it has sold out is pointless unless you factor in the number of units available each time. If they released it in smaller batches then I'm sure they would have more than 3 "sell outs".
The content of your post is both pointless and unhelpful as it is but the fact that you wrote it after I already posted that I've purchased the device AND taken delivery takes it to a whole new level. *slow clap*

Motorola is still looking for a product manager for the X-Phone, so it isn't THAT close, and it's biggest advantage over the N4 will be probably be a 1080p screen, which is nigh-moot on a phone. It will probably have LTE variants, too.

Worth the purchase?

Hello,
Having some problems with my LG G3 and LG have agreed to giving me a settlement of the phones value when I first started my contract as they can't replace it so I'm getting between £400-600 for my troubles. Trying to avoid going on contract so wanting to pick up a phone on par or better than my G3 and I came across the OnePlus 2 which is £249.99 for the 64gb model and from what I've seen packs a punch.
Is the device worth the cash? I'd be unlocking the bootloader and heading straight to CM so not too fussed on the state of the stock ROM. Just want to make sure it runs smoothly, has no lag and all in all is good value for money.
Any help would be great.

No. I'm quite sad that i bought it. And i can't sell it, as not a lot of people in denmark, are into phones like this. Btw what were the issue with your lg g3?
As soon as OOS 3.0 beta was released, I would recommend this phone to everyone. Now with 3.0.1 it became even better. I was looking for a better phone, but haven't found anything that would suite my needs better yet. UI is butter smooth, camera is superb, haven't came across any heat problems with SD810 neither. Battery life is plain marvelous (see pics). So yes, in my opinion it's worth giving a shot.
PS I've tried most of the cm roms, would still recommend sticking with Oxygen. Even if everything was okayish, call quality was always crap (me being hipster who still uses phone to call)
PS 2 I'm new here (being registered, I've been following xda threads since years) - how to upload an image?
I'm on my 9th phone so far for 2016 lol. As of right now, I am more than satisfied with my OPT. This thing crushes the G3 in evey way.

Thanks for the replies. In regards to the question about the problem with my G3 - Mic was fully gone, sent it back four times and each time they claimed it was fix but the device wasn't touched whatsoever.
Is is it worth waiting for the Oneplus 3 (Assuming it launches June 14th)? I don't mind being phoneless for a few weeks so I'm hoping it's fully announced and online very soon as my G3 is being sent off Tuesday so should have everything sorted from LG by next Tuesday I imagine as it's being sent direct to their head management since their engineers are incompetent haha.
Last question; any discount codes floating around for the OnePlus devices? Had a look online but no luck! No harm in saving a few £££

Pixel 2 XL bad press and forum experience

So I returned the 64GB XL that I originally ordered due to me not adding the preferred care and seeing all the quality control and screen issues. I reordered a 128 GB device with preferred care and cancelled. All the bad press, all the threads and posts about quality control issues, this being a "travesty" and other comments. I cancelled and reordered 5 times and I finally followed through with the purchase. But only on one condition. I wasn't going to look at articles, forums, videos or any sort of press regarding the device at all for a week. I had read about all the issues and was still weary about it when I received the device on the 26th. I set it up and the first thing I did was look for this blue tint. I have a VERY slight tint at extreme angles that I do not view of device from but it did not bother me a bit and did not interfere with my experience. So what did I do next? I used my phone as my daily driver and in the same manner that I did my $8+. Since the 26th, I have had no issues, and I can honestly say that I could not be more thrilled with this device. It is exactly what I was looking for. My first vanilla Android experience and it is amazing. So with that being said, let's get to the question. Has anyone else avoided the negative press and forums to get their own experience? Has anyone else come to the and conclusion that I have? I can't say that the phone is perfect. I can't say that every device is made equal. But I can say that if you are on the fence with your purchase, just buy it. Experience the device for yourself, form your own opinion. Keep in mind what you have learned from other's experiences, but really form your own opinion with your own experience and come share with us. If you don't like it, just return it. Thanks for the read everyone! If you like your device great! If it wasn't for you, I hope you find the device you're looking for. Have a great one everybody!
I ordered on day one and my phone was very blue at even a slight angle. I returned it and ordered another and I am very happy with it. the processor is a beast. battery and camera are the best there is. Software and features are way ahead of others and will stay there. You need to try it. Don't read or buy into the negative hype. Try it. If you don't like it returning the device is easy and costs nothing.

I didn't let it get me down. I pre-ordered on the 6th, got it the 28th, never returned it, and never cared about the press.
I don't care about random people's opinions, and I have no idea why everyone does. I figured once I got it, i would see if I like it, if not, I would return it and move on.
The media is and always will be full of ****, the same with the vast majority of people sadly. I still hear people run in their mouth about this device in telegram chats and online that never have nor will hold an xl2, at that rate, why would anyone take anything they say at face value? It's sad that people fall to peer pressure, and can't be big enough to make a decision for themselves, they have to follow the norm.
Anyways, my device like most others shifts colors at an angle, and it doesn't bother me. I always have and will use black themes while I'm on an oled device. You can't get this rich of black color which makes everything else pop on lcd.
Coming from a 6p, this phone is light years faster than it was, and the battery life I've had on stock with the stock kernel, has put all other devices I've had to shame. I couldn't be happier with the xl2
This phone ticked all the boxes I want/need and after the trade in plus the rebate from T-mobile I'd be stupid not to jump on it. While waiting all the complaints about the screen came in so I was curious to see what it would look like when I got it. Opened the box and turned the screen on, tilted it and said...."that's it???". I've been loving it since day one. Best phone I've ever had.
If anything the negative press had lowered my expectations some, so when I finally got my phone I was absolutely blown away by how great it is. I couldn't say if I had not read anything bad about the phone, whether or not my response would have been the same, but all I can say is that this is the best phone I have ever used (going from Nexus 5, to 6, to 6P, to 2XL)
I find it humorous that in advance of the iPhone X, Apple puts out a paper saying that burn-in and blue tint upon tilting device are normal for oled screens, and not a defect. I wonder if all the media sources that blasted the Pixel 2 XL for being a "mediocre" device because of those screen issues will be as hard on Apple as they were on Google?
I've read the articles and kept up with stuff, but I really just don't give a sh__, to be frank. Is there a blue tint at angle? Yup. Does it bother me? Nope. Is there screen burn in/retention? Don't know. (I have not seen anything and don't care about trying it out to see.) This phone is so freaking phenomenal, I can't believe that people steer clear over some bad press given by a bunch of YouTube reviewers that nit-pick everything with every phone ever made.
To prove my point on how little the everyday user cares, I showed 2 buddies of mine my 2 XL the other night. They both just recently got the iPhone 8+ and they've had Apple devices going back to the iPhone 6. Both of them played with my 2 XL for at least 15 minutes. Neither of them mentioned anything about the screen other than they said they loved the lack of huge bezels. Both commented on how blazingly fast it performed. They also loved how it listened for music and displayed what was playing automatically.
I'm happy with my 2 XL. If by some chance Google does some sort of recall, etc. I may go ahead and do that, but as of yet, I see no reason to RMA my phone.
Dang, OP. Nailed my experience, but in a different manner: Ordered during the event and got mine on the 20th. Also came from an S8+.
Have since stopped reading comments on popular Android tech sites due to the sheer vileness of them. Maybe it was present before and I just never noticed, but the comments sections are a total sh_tshow. I am embarrassed to be a part of a community that can treat each other so poorly.
I imagine someone new to the community going on to these sites and just being absolutely stunned by how petty and rude we must seem.
It's not just Pixel articles either; Samsung, HTC, LG.... It's unavoidable.
I like my S8+ and my 2 XL. I liked my V20. My son loves his V30 (and before that, his HTC 10). Why can't we seem to accept that they're all great devices? Why do we have to be so vile to each other?

I preordered it and kept it.
Ive had a Galaxy Nexus Nexus 5 Nexus 6p and now the Pixel XL 2 I can tell you... You will never get a "perfect" phone from Google you just wont. But you dont get this phone because its perfect. You get it because you dont have to wait for updates from the carrier that will never come. You dont have to worry about the bootloader being locked. And you can pretty much count on the most developer support.
Everyone of the phones listed above had an "issue" blown way out of proportion.
Galaxy Nexus was battery life even leading to Verizon offering a extended battery
Nexus 5 had a screen issue where anything after the 1st batch had a yellow tint to the display. (I was lucky to get one of the good ones but then 3 months later my phone decided to not DL or send MMS at all no matter what i did. I had to RMA it and got a yellow tint phone. Oh and battery life issues.
Nexus 6p had screen issues and battery issues where the phone would shut down once the battery reached anywhere from 15% to 50% Oh there was also a software bug on only this phone where the phone would refuse to switch to LTE and the only way to make it do this was to go into the secret *#*4636*#*# and toggle the LTE radio. This was not fixed for 2 security updates
See you will never get a "perfect phone" from Google. Just like a lot of their products start out pretty ****ty and get better through several updates.

I've had a horrible experience through all of this, I'm also a new member here, although I've been a lurker for years. BUT I pre-ordered, kept the order and received a P2XL that is blue straight on and gets worse at any angle. I RMA'd my device, new one will be here this friday/saturday. Thing is after a week I really love this phone and willing to try at least one more as it seems there is or was a quality issue but most here that have RMA'd are reporting they've gotten a better device back. I agree what another member posted about the rhetoric and the way people are treating each other but that's the interwebs these days. Also seems a bunch of people here received great devices to begin with (ANOTHER REASON TO ORDER ONE AND TRY IT YOURSELF) but unfortunately some of them just assume everyone's device is the exact same as theirs and some of them even deny there could be an issue saying "we see these things differently" and we should "just shut up or get a refund". Don't listen to them, don't really take much weight in what anyone says (including me) about their personal experience until you've had the exact same experience with the same device to relate to their issues posted. We're here to share our experiences with these devices with each other but for every 1 P2XL user here there are probably at least 4 or 5 if not more that are ecstatic to own these phones from Google. Remember most people who have issues go onto forums and websites to see if others are experiencing the same issues. So it becomes a breeding ground for every issue ever found on "x" device within "x" days of being released. Like what's been said here before, it's not just here, all manufacturers have issues with their devices and for me IMO the P2XL is what I want/need in a phone. Hopefully you'll order one up and give it a shot, you're truly missing out on an amazing experience with an amazing device.
You know things are desperate when people have to make "feel good" threads.
As for the validity of media or what else has been said here, this entire thread is pure conjecture and speculation made against others who disagree.
Im also not sure who this is directed at. The people who dont like/want this phone wont be here.
Neither will the people who returned them.

Neither apples pathetic response to possible issues with the screen nor Google's "we are looking into it" imply a whole lot respect for the consumer or confindence for their devices.
You can like your device, you can claim its perfect, beautiful, whatever. But for this price, nothing short of perfection(as much as it can be achieved) should be demanded.
If im paying a grand, i dont want to be bothered by RMAs or other BS.
If they have QC issues, they are free to perhaps ship some jobs back to Europe/America. Im sure they have enough money to pay decent wages for people to QC their devices or produce them here.
If not, they should not expect mercy from the consumer or press, and yes this includes apple too

You do know you're paying for more than hardware right? You don't really think you're getting a minimum of 3 years OS updates, a minimum of 3 years of monthly security updates, support help right on the device, and all that unlimited storage for nothing do ya.

No device is without "issues". Not a one.
If you won't pay a grand for any non-perfect device, and no such device exists, you are basically claiming no device is worth a grand.

Do you believe any of the current issues would be present, if they had QC that actually was managed properly?
It cant be because of technology that the device costs this much, about a grand, in 2017.
Surely they can afford proper QC at an asking price of 1 grand.
Im not sure proper QC is like pink unicorns, but i guess people should just shut up.

Thats true, i wish only they provided a black skin/overlay for android.
Its 2017 and only custom roms offer amoled friendly UI.
Im not sureni value android updates when they offer no enhancements i need.

QC doesn't stop issues from reaching the public. It limits them.
A certain number of bad devices will invariably get out in the market. This is unavoidable.
If you are trying to claim that it is avoidable, that any company could release a device and the public would not see a single failure, please - do tell; what fantastical device is it?
If you are trying to claim that *all* Pixel 2 XL devices are bad, well, you're entitled to your opinion, but if that is indeed the case, your opinion is not at all relevant to us.

Pray tell, do you really believe issues such as blue tint or burn in wouldnt be caught by proper QC?
These issues are so obvious, even non-tech savy people can notice them.
And no, i didnt claim qc prevents all bad apples, but thw moat obvious ones. Way to strawman my point there.
All google needed to do, when noticing issues in QC , is hold off on the release date.
You can probably imagine how much i enjoyed last years fiasco with exploding batteries with samsung.
If anything, that was the epitome and parody of the flagship smartphone industry.
Imagine buying a porsche and getting one that had paint issues or an expensive mercedes with discolored glass.
If i wanted to gamble and try my luck, i would get an Oppo, not a pixel or samsung.
I agree with both you guys lol. IMO the issue is when testing Google from day 1 just looked past the blue tint and other issues thinking "This is the way it has to be" "it's a trade off" and software updates will fix it or it's just supposed to be like that. Hence the quality issues, if you tell your QC dept that it's supposed to look like that then they'll unfortunately let them all leave the factory like that. Probably why there's 50 shades of blue and no direct reasoning or answer from anyone as to why there's such a variance between the exact same devices produced on the same date even. BTW shadowcore is onto something I've been previously saying, yea there's shortcomings with any new device but it shouldn't be this bad all over the map with these things for the price they charge. And then attempted sweeping under the rug of it all, "working as intended" just to rub ya the wrong way after all that money spent whether you got 5 discounts or paid full retail. PRINCIPLE. This is top tier device I know it's been done before here but would you buy a brand new BMW/AUDI/LEXUS/MERCEDES and be just fine with creaking plastic crappy interior you sit in every time you drive? We need to interact with this screen every day all day for some people.

Is their QC sub-par? Do they actually have more defective units than other vendors?
Is there anything other than the initial media coverage, now little more than background noise, that implies Google's devices see more defects in the market than others?
Or, as you just admitted in the last post, are you just super happy about any and all failures and maybe that is what is driving your fervor?
I mean, even if that's what it is, I get it. These companies make billions - watching them trip and fall, even if it's only in our perception, can be somewhat cathartic - is it really any more than that, though?

Please all give your support, if you all so are sick and tired, for having paid nearly 1000$ for a phone that still is on Android Nougat 7.0. If we are lucky some will maybe get Oreo in marts, but more likely first after launch of Samsung Galaxy 9.
I will never buy Samsung phone again for sure. Overpaid switzerknife.

You only have yourself to blame, should have done your research before you buy a phone, sure Samsung don't haven't the fastest release cycle but this is not something new, you must have a lot money to throw money around willy nilly without doing your own due diligence 1st.
We've had Android phones for eight years. You should know by now which brands release updates faster than others. And Samsung isn't one of them.
That being said, I'm in no hurry to get Android Oreo. Nougat is one of the best Android has ever released, and it's working extremely well on my S7 and S8. Besides, they've been releasing security patches quite regularly, so they can release Oreo whenever they feel is ready.
What on earth gave you the idea that anyone cared in slightest what you think about samsungs release schedule, moreso what you plan purchasing or not purchasing (as the case may be)
Seriously i want to know so that i can hopefully make them stop.
Maybe a mod will see this and grant my second place wish, which is to lock this thread as not only does it not ask a question or answer one, it has no positive value whatsoever.
Sorry man people are right ! Samsung is not the fastest to give update but they aways bring the upadate for example oreo will be out at the end of february if you dont like to wait costom roms wit oreo as many as you like in here.....
Why when they do reviews they never complain about Bloat and no Updates?

You get one update maybe 6 months after it is released. Yes Oreo is out 9 months after it was released, good luck getting the next release after Oreo.
You do not want any Samsung Apps .... good luck disabling them.

Why would you respond if you didn't care? ?
To be honest, for myself, having the newest Android isn't a problem.
I prefer having a phone with good overall hardware and processing capabilities. Also, so far, nothing very important comes to android oreo.
For instance, I prefer having a S8, 700~$ android nougat phone with Samsung Dex capabilities and great camera rather than having another brand, 500-600$ish android oreo phone with mediocre camera and hardware.
Exactly! There's so much to enjoy the S7 and S8 with Nougat.
I have oreo on my s8 and there isnt really a whole lot new, some, but not a lot.
I researched heavily into update releases, I originally bought the Sony XZ1 Compact with Oreo as Sony are supposedly really good at updates and to be honest they arent bad but the default Oreo software on those phones is seriously flawed with constant reboots on a number of exchanged devices. I ended up with Samsung as for the price they are ok, not super slow but not super fast and I've got a great little phone too.
Pixel 2 was a lot more expensive at the point I upgraded but if not Id have gone for that purely because of the updates.
My only disappointment with my S8 is the curved screen which looks great but serves no real purpose and inhibits the use of glass screen protectors. I now have to use a bulky wrap around case or take a big expensive risk. If it had a flat screen it would have been easy to get a screen protector for it. Oreo is great and im waiting for the final release too but I already have the beta and would be happy with Nougat too if I wasnt in beta.

Time for upgrade?

I've been using my OP5 since I bought it new in July 2017, and it's approaching 4 years. This is my first (and probably last) brand new from manufacturer phone, as I am typically a thrifty spender.
I did replace the battery in either 2019 or 2020, and I've had to scrape the dust out of the USB c port numerous times.
At this point, it still works fine and is plenty fast, so I can't really justify money on a new phone yet. So I've been on the lookout for the perfect replacement. I've never owned other OP devices, but for those who've bought the new oneplus models in 2021 (or maybe even next year) is it still worth it to buy a oneplus? I used to be very active in the technology stuff (jailbreaking iTouch 4, rooting all sorts of android devices installing way too many versions of ROMs to count) but then life happened and I no longer have much time to spend on phone research.
I'm interested to hear what you guys think!

Edit: screen is very important (love the AMOLED and pixel density), battery life, clean software is a plus (this is why I stopped modding, because OP software is so great), fast enough for games without stutter, etc.
Well... I am in a similar situation as you are. The only difference is that I kind of want to upgrade for the sake of a better camera, even though except for a few glitches that are probably hardware in nature, I can barely justify buying a new phone.
Thing is, it is not worth doing research if you're not planning to buy soon. If someone would come tell you to buy the OnePlus 9, but you'll only going to order it in 6 - 12 months, you won't be able to buy it directly from OnePlus. Moreover, many other candidates would have been lunched making the advice less relevant.
So if you want to buy sometime in the next 1-3 months, yes, ask for an advice. Otherwise wait until you're ready to open your wallet or your OnePlus 5 kicks the bucket.
If you really want to find out each phone's development status (TWRP. root, etc) check their respective forum sections.
And the most important part: set a budget! Otherwise, it's useless for people to recommend you the 9 when you could easily buy the 9 Pro and get a better experience.
