Motorola says they will make the bootloader of the razr unlockable! (The android phone, not the other one) Check out the link here.
For those of you who are too lazy to read the whole thing, I summarised the whole article.
1. Razr first phone to include the fully implemented lock/unlock bootloader software in it.
2.Once Motorola launched the razr in their global markets, they will have a list of the models that will be unlocked displayed on their motodev.com website.
3.Mobile operators/carriers can opt out to having this software on their phone
4.Verizon has opt out. (Doesn't affect me personally but still unhappy)
So now, pressure your carriers!!
Also, hopefully, moto will also unlock their other phones. (Not that we need it now)
That's the thing, carriers still want the BLs locked down.
Why is there such a struggle with Motorola, but not Samsung with this?...

Is there a possibility that samsung has it easier because they pressure carriers themselves? Perhaps by having a variant of the Galaxy S2 on each carrier they can use that to their advantage. They just say "if you don't allow us to have an unlocked bootloader on your network then people will go to someone that will."
With phones like the Razr they can't cause it exclusive. I'm probably way off but it's just a thought.

I hope they unlock all of their phones as I just bought myself an atrix 2 and can't wait to start flashing.
Guess for now I'll have to stick with playing with the old atrix.

Hmmm. Good point there. Also, the Droid name is owned by Verizon and not Motorola so thee do have quite little say in the matter. Hopefully the software from the global razr can be ported to the Verizon one.

They did say they will start unlocking bootloaders late 2011, and seem to be keeping with the plan. They also say the razr will be the first phone to be unlocked, followed by other devices. So maybe early next year your wish will come true!
As was already said, the key here is that the carriers will have the option to opt out. Motorola could have given us an unlocked bootloader anytime they wanted on the Atrix, but were/are held back by carriers and their contracts. So in reality, not a damned thing is changing unless you choose to purchase a full price non-carrier specific phone in the future which will have this option.
I view this as purely marketing on Motorola's part, as they are offering up nothing that they haven't had the ability to provide at any other time previous to this announcement.

in my country they just passed a law where it is forbidden to lock phones to carriers; if you have a locked phone, you can just bring it to the carrier you want to use and they have to unlock it for free.

You're thinking of SIM Lock and not bootloader unlock. They are 2 completely separate things.

what i was trying to say is that it would be cool if there was a law such the one i described, that applied to locked bootloaders.

I just installed the Home Base Blue Chronic 4 and I have to say its fantastic...
I noticed that there is an update to 6.2 but it says its tailored for version 5??
Am I safe in installing it? I did not see a blue chronic version 5 to download...

I don't like the black and white color scheme. The phones are identical and yet one gets to keep the warranty. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Motorola needs to sell phones. That's what they do. To do that, they need to be friends with the carriers. Carriers don't want you unlocking your phone and uninstalling all the junk they put there. They make money from that junk. So you need to be discouraged from doing that.
Now, Motorola was actually nice enough to sell phones directly, outside of the carriers, to the general public. These phones are unlocked and easily rooted. That's great!

I hear that and in a Macro way that does make sense, but when I think about it in a selfish Micro way I just can't help but feel that it doesn't make any sense that they would let you keep your warranty if it has the words Developers Edition on your phone.

I'm guessing it's largely about the subsidy. If the carrier is footing the bill for your phone up front, they don't want you running out and doing something they might have to support, thus costing them twice. It's probably easier to void the warranty for all subsidized versions rather than keeping track of who paid full price and who took a subsidy.

You actually DON'T keep warranty with the Dev Ed if you unlock the bootloader.
There's a statement in the box (just got my VZW Moto X DE yesterday) that states as soon as you unlock, you void the warranty and are on your own.
Thus, the only difference is that Motorola willingly gives DE owners the unlock code without having to surreptitiously hack the phone.

Apparently, that is the case. Mea culpa.
"Despite what Motorola says" I stated because one of the reasons I bought the DE was that I was under the impression that the warranty would be preserved. Then, opening the box and seeing that cautionary pamphlet, I (wrongly) assumed that I had misinterpreted Motorola's website claims regarding the DE. What I didn't do was go back and confirm via Motorola's website.
Sorry for any confusion, and thanks to binary visions and imnuts for the correction!
The pamphlet is being edited to display the same language we have on the web site on new units. Sorry your unit did not come with an updated psmphlet but the web site language and new legal agreement takes precedence.

Plug phone in, run a couple commands, copy key, goto Motorola's official unlock site, paste code, get email from Motorola, copy another code in that email. Run command. Profit. I think that is pretty much how you unlock the carrier versions. It's not any having and is an official procedure from Motorola. What's the difference for the DE versions?

A) not all the carrier versions can be unlocked, and
B) only the DE versions maintain their warranty after unlocking, as already stated above
Don't blame Motorola. Carriers require locked bootloaders. When you get unlocked phones usually you can do whatever you want to it. The warranty thing is a nice addition but I've never broken a phone to the point where I couldn't fix it myself. Personally I don't see an issue with the colors the warranty is just a bonus.

Same premise applies in the poster's comments above you. The carrier doesn't want to encourage this behavior so while they don't stop you from unlocking, they don't want to cover the related warranty issues.

I can't really see how that is true since t mobile and sprint both have and embrace the nexus program. In fact the t mobile moto x is the XT1053... Same exact phone as the gsm Dev edition save for the words on the back. Hell, if woven white was available through moto maker, I could go build a woven white back and black front phone and have the words "Developer Edition" put on the back and it would simply be the exact same.
I don't really understand the warranty thing with t mobile since a 32gb moto maker x is the exact same price and exact same model with the same process for unlocking. For Verizon I get it because they already have a locked phone policy, but t mobile doesn't. In fact, T-Mobile says they carry the phone but it isn't a T-Mobile branded phone (which is why they don't have Wi-Fi calling on it).
As well, functionality wise, if you want a nice looking unlocked moto x for at&t, you moto make a t mobile version and unlock it.
At least Motorola has a no questions asked return policy. I unlocked mine and was able to return it. Of course I flashed back to stock (huge pain compared to normal fastboot) and relocked it prior to returning. One thing they don't mention is they pay for return shipping, contrary to their website.

It does as far as warranty facilitation. You will no longer be able to walk into your carrier store for support. You'd need to work with Motorola directly. While you may be covered with Moto, your carrier isn't obligated to assist you.

With the US XT1053, you were never able to walk into a carrier store in the first place. T-Mobile does not sell this phone. They will not support it if you walk into a store, regardless of whether you are unlocked or not. And before somebody tries to say that it's still carrier-associated because they have the carrier name on the website when you order, well, so does the Verizon Dev Edition. The warranty is still valid on that when unlocking. Verizon won't help you with that, either, but Motorola will. That's what needs to happen with the T-Mobile X as well.
Sprint is slightly different, but as mentioned, they sell the Nexus phones in their store, which are also not warranty-voided if unlocked. I'm pretty sure they could manage to figure out how to handle the X, too.
There is no OEM unlocking option in my Developer settings. There is also no fastboot option in either the bootloader or download modes. I'm not sure what options I have to unlocking and rooting my phone. I hope there is something I can do, but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Just buy the US unlocked version. There's a $100 code so it's cheaper than the Verizon version, it'll have better ROM support and it has more LTE bands than the Verizon variant.
The only downside is that we'll have to wait for devs to integrate IMS and the other components for Advanced Calling to work properly but it definitely can be done. Xdabbeb used to integrate all the needed components into his G3/G2 hybrid ROM that had an international base.

I purchased the G4 32GB model XT1625 from Amazon (not their ad version) over the weekend for $179. I followed the instructions how to request the bootloader unlock code from Motorola, it says my device is not eligible to unlock. Has anyone purchased XT1625 from Amazon and are able to get the unlock code from Moto?
This has already been covered, read the other threads. It was only available for about a week to unlock, then Motorola/Amazon put a stop to it apparently. Return the phone if not satisfied.

When requesting the bootloader unlock, did you manually scrub the output of get_unlock_data? Or did you use the online data scrub tool?

I just got off the phone with support, the guy said G4 from Amazon (ads or no ads) will not qualify for bootloader unlock. This sucks.

Yep, that sucks bigtime. I would imagine that their sales would go down if this became known. So apparently the only advantage of the no ad is ota's if one considers that an advantage.

They're treating it like a phone you'd buy from AT&T or another carrier.
The Amazon ad subsidized phone understand... But the stock moto phone... I'm sceptic.

fyi, i received the moto g4 standard edition with the $50 instant rebate from amazon. i purchased the phone on the 8th of july and received the package on the 21st. Immediately after receiving the phone I did a bootloader unlock attempt and it worked on the first try. All I can say is make sure you copy all lines of the boot loader unlock string for your device that is shown after entering the fastboot bootloader unlock command. After copying the entire string, make sure to enter it into the online scrub tool that is on the bootloader unlock website of motorola.
Now use the cleaned bootloader unlock string from the online scrub tool to apply for a bootloader unlock code. This should activate a blue button labeled "Request Unlock Key", which will give you the unlock key once you click it.
If things don't work despite this, I don't know what to say. Motorola specifically said on their website that the "Prime Exclusive" version of the G4 will be locked officially, whereas other variants will not. As stated above, I received the standard edition of the G4 after the 19th of July which is when new bootloader unlock attempts for the Moto G4 Prime exclusive started to get blacklisted.
Also, make sure it says "retus" in the software channel of your phone. To locate the software channel of your phone, open the phone settings and tap on "about phone". "retus" is motorola's software channel for all moto g4 phones, except the prime exclusive version which has "amzn" instead of "retus". If you have "amzn" in your software channel, I think it is best to return your phone and get the standard edition from amazon.
Please let us know if you happen to resolve this problem!

Frankly, I would be shocked if a normal retail version was, but I want to verify... I was almost ready to click to purchase on one for my son who broke the screen on his Huawei Ascend Mate 2 this morning... I would really rather not if it can't be unlocked, I would just order it from Motonova and let him pick the color and stuff and he can use his old Nokia 520 for a few extra days.

I did exactly what you said in your post, no dice and yes, the software channel did show "retus". I'll return the phone back to Amazon or have them to replace the phone for me, can't beat their price of $179 for 32GB though. Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.

I just (15 minutes ago) unlocked the bootloader on my amazon-bought, non-ad version of the G4. Unlock code worked fine, I copy-pasted each line manually, including the "#"s.
Confirmed. Waited too long to unlock. Now i get "not eligible" message. /sigh

As I know all devices should be bootloader unlocked, so you can choose any device, it just doesn't matter, so go for you choice.

That wasn't the case with the Pixel 3 at launch, though. Back then, to get unlockable bootloader, you had to order from Google directly. Is it different now?

After the release of pixel 3a it should be unlockable to all devices, like verizon, best-buy,......, So it should be unlockable.

The OP is asking about bootloader unlock (developer and root friendly). Everything you've said screams carrier unlock.
The bootloader is the low level piece of software on your device that loads the OS (Android) and everything else. It comes locked on every device for security and prevents unauthorized OS code from loading. This is completely separate from being carrier unlocked which allows you to use the device on any cellular carrier. Being able to unlock it and load any OS code has meant purchasing the device directly from Google in the past. Verizon devices for example never allowed the bootloader to be unlocked.
For the OP, since very few people understand the difference between those two things (even Google support), it will likely be a case where people will need to buy the device from B&H to find out.

If you search a little bit, you will able to unlock bootloader in verizon model too, verizon bootloader unlock is available for all pixel device and it going to be continued, so buying the device from Google is bootloader unlock for sure, buying from others buyers is just need a little time to get unlock the bootloader.

Verizon Pixel 3 XL still has a locked bootloader and is still not unlockable:

Since you're so sure this is true, please go help all of the Verizon device owners who post looking to unlock the bootloader. You could start with this recent Pixel 3XL post.
Of course, there is also the history that dates back to at least Nexus 6 days where the Verizon bootloader is locked.
Where people have really gotten bitten, is replacement devices that have come back after repairs with a unlockable bootloader like the Verizon devices have.

This. Verizon Pixel 2 official and any RMA Pixel 2 is not bootloader unlockable. As someone who has been through 4 until Google finally sent me a brand new Google-made Pixel 2, non Verizon, non RMA.
I haven't seen any reason to say Pixel 4 Verizon is easily unlockable.

You have clearly never tried to bootloader unlock a Verizon device or you have some significantly different tools to do so and should share them with the community.
As others have pointed out, plenty of devices across the Pixel generations remain bootloader locked to this day. There are certainly smatterings of success stories with specific firmware versions but these are quickly patched.
There was recently some people that were able to unlock their Verizon Pixel 3a/XL modes after getting Verizon to carrier unlock them. But it has been attributed to a batch of MEID# that were likely incorrectly made available to bootloader unlock. Those people basically won the lottery. It certainly does not signal a change in Verizon's policy.
The best strategy is to have this mentality - if you buy a phone from Verizon (or any Verizon model phone) plan on it being permanently bootloader locked.

I just unlock the bootloader as the given guide and it got unlocked, I didn't done anything to get it unlocked, I just use the guide how to unlock the bootloader and it got unlocked.so I thought it is available for all devices to unlock the bootloader.

On non carrier specific devices, it's easy. On Verizon Google devices, it's rarely possible, and any vulnerability that's found is patched fast.
An authoritative statement like your post was is a problem. It has the potential to confuse the issue for people who come here for information, find an erroneous post and think they can safely buy a carrier device, still getting the bootloader unlocked.
Verizon was always a **** regarding unlocking bootloaders, they still haven't changed unfortunately.

Yes. One does have to wonder what the bootloader unlock situation will look like now that the Pixel will be available from all carriers directly rather than just Verizon. Google still only lists Verizon as the only carrier specific option on their store. We will likely have to wait and see if the other carriers get unlockable bootloaders or not.
