Returning my Z1 - Xperia Z1 General

Well I'm going to be returning my Z1 due to the very poor screen.
Everything on the screen isn't sharp enough (funny that as it's a Sharp panel) the colours are very poor. The white are more cream like.
Software is buggy if you turn off optimised backlight.
Ear piece speaker isn't loud enough, probably due to the waterproofing.
Camera is nothing to rave about either.
Yes some of these issues will be sorted out with updates but they might not and I'm not taking the risk on a £550+ device.
It's a shame because I really wanted to like the device but I'll be happy to go back to my Nexus 4!

Back to my trusty N4 and maybe the N5. Like I said I really wanted to like the device but even when compared to my nexus 4 the screen on the Z1 looks poor.

I'm having a similar issue with the screen too... Compared to my Nexus 7 screen, the whites are very creamy! Going to see if they're willing to do an exchange!

The issue for me when I'm in apps, while my Nexus 7 screen shows a bright white background, the Z1's is a bit yellowy in the same app... I'm going to give it a bit more time... Have 28 days, might exchange for a new one when stock comes into stores...

To be honest, its just that I used to have an S3 and its has a lot of colour saturation and vibrance due to Super AMOLED screen.. I will compare to display models on Wednesday and see how.. I got 28 days to exchange anyways!

Well, the S3 displays whites with a distracting blue tint. Returning that unit? Lol.
Just give it a chance for it to settle. Try going to *#*#7378423#*#* and run a display test. Check if it's yellowish there. Unless my Xperia Ion has a yellow screen (highly doubt), I compared a C6903 and my ion screen yesterday via the service menu and whites looked white on both screens.

Hey I did that test and its yellowish. Is that a build defect?

Same issue with the Xperia T when I compare it with the Xperia play

Z1 screen quality is not that good due to it probably is (at least certain batch) TN/VA panel.
Z1 is not same panel use as Z Ultra which is IPS.

to me the Amoled screen makes everything look unnatural - like everything looks animated instead of real, it might be pretty to look at but it is just so lacking in detail and texture, I tried watching a movie on anS4 and it looked dark saturated and animated - honestly not really what anyone want
Ever wonder why they don't use Amoled screen on TV's ? if you answer that honestly then you will understand why the Z1 screen is preferable

It is difficult to fabricate and costly to fabricate large panel using AMOLED. the life of AMOLED is not high to be used in TV..Content mad is for sRGB gamut not for complete visual wavelength... gaming in AMOLED is awesome... other than that Z1 is awesome..

Tested the camera vs my HTC one. Z1 is pretty good Imo.
Screen has poor viewing angles, but who's really going to look at the phone at these angles really....
And the yellowish screen, not as white as my HTC one, but it's not yellow as others are saying. I remember the s3 and note 2 were yellow so idk

There is no way I'm accepting a device that is worse then the model it's replacing.
Let's see what the N5 brings.

Wise choice if you are unhappy with a device then no point keeping it and you really cannot go wrong with the Nexus range anyway.

Why does GNote 1 screen look better then GNote 2?

I've had S3 and it's the best screen ever.
I am let down however with the GN2 screen, it looks bland and lacking detail, it's like looking at the S3 then iphone 5 and noticing the difference in colors.
I even compared it to the GNote 1 side by side and the galaxy note 1 just looked much better, better colors no doubt.
Am I the only one or have other people found the same thing?

Note 2 colors are much more "accurate" as they say...
Maybe you like oversaturated colors more? becauee another example you gave of iphone 5, Display Mate has said that the display of iphone 5 is more "accurate colors" than that of s3.
But some people (me too!) like oversaturation and inaccuracy more
settings>display>screen mode>dynamic
that should bring out a bit more color.

Yes I understand all the comparisons in pixels/ RBG/ pentile. The GNote 2 on paper is impressive but, when I actually help the device and looked at it, it looked lacking. I don't know, I'm still note convinced by the replies.

im looking to get a note again.... do you have to crank up the brightness on the note 2 to see it really good at day time sunlight?

I think that graphic is a bit misleading as it has been scaled up slightly on the S3 to match sizes.
I have both the S3 and the Note 2 and yeah in some ways the S3 screen is better but I would say it's due to the PPI.
One thing that is right on in that pic is the green tint on the S3. Holding them side by side it's certain that colors are truer on the Note 2 and white is more white etc.
note 2 is a improvement of the s3 pentile matrix. Its not up for debate. Its like saying ps1 has better graphics then ps2.
Why the denial?

Here in HK alot of users had reported that texts and images appear to be much sharper on the note 1. It has to do with the S-stripe subpixel arrangement of the new note 2 screen, heres an article that explains it in more details (please cutout the spaces before and after the word "uwants". Site is also in chinese but u should be able to get the idea looking at the pics):

I agree with the OP. The whites on my screen appear a little beige-ish when held parallel to the eye. Once you tilt it, in any direction you see the pure whiteness. I tried this at various brightness levels. I dont think this is a matter about comparing pixels and sub-pixel arrangement. The colors on first glance look superb better than any screen that ive seen. But when you tilt the screen a bit, that when u realise what superb really is! but holding it staright, the whites are certainly not so white.
Ive also read that all Amoleds are different and that could be one of the reasons. And im not sure if Samsung will replace the unit for this? Has anyone tried to replace the handset before, with any other Galaxies due to this screen problem?
I have both andI Note II has the better screen specially outdoor visibility .However the screen being more tinted is making the whites slightly duller.
A faulty screen. Normal problem of all AMOLED screens that the quality is varied.
I Can't believe all the bad talk over this screen. Received my unit today. In my eyes, this is the best screen on any mobile device that I have owned. It looks fantastic!!! Whites look good, blacks are fantastic, and colors pop. It's even usable outside in the sun. I'm coming from an S3, and have also owned the One X, iphone 4 and the original Note.

You should try using same background and then compare the home screens to see the difference. But my nexus 4 looks much better than SGS3 my friend has
It's washed out compared to the Galaxy S3 because the Galaxy S3's screen is better. Same when I compare my two phones. The Nexus 4 has been a real disappointment.
Definitely noticed it compared to my HTC one x. Ain't gonna go back though, the extra RAM and lack of bloaty skins makes the nexus 4 fly. I'll live with the washed out home screens, in video playback its not too bad.

No... it's just AMOLED
IPS has far more advantages than AMOLED, including brighter screen, non pentile, no screen burn in, no blue hue, more natural colors.
SAMOLED has more vibrant colors, but as stated multiple times it's oversaturated, and the whites are not white; they're blue(ish)

The N4 delivers a much crisper image with brighter and truer colors. Yeah, AMOLEDs look nice. But they aren't natural. It's especially visible after using a phone with an IPS or LCD screen for a while. Put your Galaxy devices in a drawer. Use only your N4 and devices with non-AMOLED screens for a week. Take the Galaxy devices out of the drawer and then compare the screens. I'm sure you'll be shocked.

I went from an iPhone 4 to a GS2 and I had no idea it was over saturated. In fact I think the screens look brighter, the colours look nicer and I love how you cannot tell the blacks on a screen to the Bezel unless you look really closely. I love how the blacks aren't grey and I'm the kinda person who likes to have a black background and nothing else, also lots of video content and apps have black backgrounds, so it is something I notice. I cannot go back to the greys that LCd screens call black.
Tbh if I look at an OLED screen on its own the colours look perfectly fine and I personally prefer them being strong. The LCDs do tend to look more washed out to me and just not as clear and I have all the bleedthrough from the back lighting. I mean I saw an iPhone 5 the other day and it had so much bleedthrough it was unreal.
Personally I think OLEDs are better and I've never had an issue with brightness, I cannot see pixels on my GS2 screen because I don't hold it 2 inches from my eyes or under a magnifying glass. The viewing angles are much better which is important for a mobile, the black levels are much better and the colours are stronger. I think people forget too that brightness isn't as important in the sun as how much the screen reflects, viewing angles but also stronger colours are easier to see under the sun light. The Galaxy series at least has some of the best screens in terms of the little amount of light it reflects off the screen, I've seen some phones and it is like a mirror :\
Wow the galaxy looks so dirty while the n4 looks crisp

You cannot say AMOLED screens have "good blacks" as they do not even produce the black color!
And whites: AMOLED whites suck, but with an LCD, the whites LCDs produce look sooo much better than any AMOLED. and whites are much more common, just open a random website and chances are the background is white (example: google.com)
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
ya definately the screen on the n4 is way better than an amoled they are just easier on the eyes for me. try looking at any shade of white/gray and youll see why
N4 screen is good but needs some gamma adjustment. Just look at the clouds on N4 and SIII, It looks like there is information missing form the clouds on N4.
Both screens looks unrealistic compared to a good adjusted lcd screen.

Nexus 4 screen color vs Galaxy Nexus blacks

Recently I'm about to face an opportunity to get a nexus 4. But seriously i find galaxy nexus blacks outstanding. Can someone help me out with this?
Also Read that nexus 4 are coming up with similar IPhone 5 glue issue when phone gets warm?
Post in guys!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Nexus 4 is ips and displays some gorgeous blacks! Realistic color as well. Solid performance and great contrast. Best Ips I've ever used. (iPhone 5 is arguably better)
You do see some idiots complaining about back light bleed (full brightness dark room) which is a limitation of the technology. Some are better than others. Mine has one little bit of bleed at the top. That's what auto brightness is for....
Galaxy Nexus doesn't produce black but instead turns off the pixel thus making it pitch black. Which is cool, but it's like comparing apples and oranges. Besides that colors are over saturated (people love this for some reason) and there is burn in and ghosting.
Regards, someone who is tired of this debate.
Edit: just note, you're buying an IPS panel, know this before you buy it. If you want AMOLED buy Samsung.

Probably this will be my first ips experience my friend. And what about the overheating issue? I read across the forum and there was a thread of yellow tint due to some glue phenomena.

also amoled screen suffer from black ink blots...
No the blacks are not as black as the Galaxy Nexus and it will take some getting used to but most likely, however, that is the absolute only thing you will miss and it's well worth the tradeoff!

Coming from a GS3 to the N4, I love the N4 screen more. I never realized how over saturated the GS3 screen was until I had my N4 next to it. The N4 has a gorgeous screen, and like others have said, the colors are "natural" and more "true to life". :highfive:
Haven't noticed yellow tint.
This phone does run warm. But what phone doesn't? It's more of an enthusiasts phone than a consumer phone. So it's going to want some love and maintenance to run perfectly...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
My phone also ran pretty warm on stock but after using Franco's r14 kernel it's been cool as a cucumber. Plus he did a few tweaks to the color which makes the whites look whiter and less yellow or blue tint if you have any

I've loved amoled displays ever since I got my galaxy s and I've been using only amoled since then (galaxy s, s2, gnex), so I was apprehensive about whether I'd like the nexus 4 screen or not.
But after just a day of use, I can safely say I'll probably stick to LCD from now on. I never imagined I'd like the screen this much. Its one of the best things about the phone.
The whites are beautiful, the blacks are very good for an LCD and look just as black as my gnex when seen in daylight/well lit environments. In dark situations the blacks aren't as good but it doesn't matter because the display still looks gorgeous. And BTW I had trinity kernel as well. Trust me, no calibration could ever get the gnex to have whites this gorgeous.
I never had an issue with pentile before but once you use a non pentile display like this, the difference is very apparent. Its so much sharper and crisper from any distance.
And the colors just look nicer as well. Looking at my dads gnex screen after this actually makes me wonder how I ever liked colors that way.
Another reason the nexus 4 screen looks so beautiful is because gradients are actually smooth. After years of looking at amoled gradients, this is a huge and welcome change.
And its great having the screen so much closer to the surface of the glass.
The only downside to the nexus 4 screen are the viewing angles. Definitely not as nice as the gnex. I can't lie down and look at my screen diagonally anymore :/ The one x doesn't have this issue so I guess its LGs fault and not an LCD related problem.
All in all, you won't regret it. No matter how much you've loved amoled. You'll finally understand what all the hype around LCDs is about. And they were right.

My Galaxy s2 never burned in, and never ghosted. Colors looked wonderful...except for white XD
Colors POP against a black area. Nexus Revamped Live wallpaper, with a solid black back ground? Beautiful
Please use the search, there has been an endless discussion about IPS LCD vs AMOLED. Get the display that you like.
Nexus 4 display sucks, I would rated it from last to first, Nexus 4 <--S3 <-- iPhone 5 <-- One X.
The nexus 4 is my first phone with many screen issue and I used to have s2,s3, iphone 4, and htc one x without any issue
except the amoled black spot on black screen you can't see unless it really dark. Better then yellow spot on a white screen.
Problem with the nexus is the gamma issue causing color to be a bit wash out, I know it's a software issue, but it's still a Nexus 4 issue.
Next, the yellow screen tint and yellow spot. I know only some have it, My personal nexus 4 have a nice white screen, but a ugly yellow spot.
My family also have two nexus 4, one have a uneven yellow tint on 2/3 of screen, the other one have an even yellowish tint, not as bad as the other one.
The nexus screen quality is not good at all, you can see vertical lines effect on light color, I compare it to a ipad 3 I have and the ipad 3 is smooth with the same picture.
The viewing angle are not as good as the other phone I mention.
The last problem with the nexus 4 screen is the flickering, It happen to 2 of the 3 nexus we have so far.
First time I ever seen a screen flicker is on a nexus 4. It flicker one time really bad, you can see all sort of line color going vertical on the screen. Shutting the phone off and back on still does the same thing, I had to leave it like that for a minute or so and it start to slowing stop. I like the phone overall, but not the Lcd.
What sort of flickering?

since the galaxy doesn't require a backlight the colours are vibrant, the display on the lg is good but the black is not black due to the backlight so its a bright black not just powered off black.the ink blotches were odd but not a issue with display. a higher dpi ans resolution and I would choose amoled/+
Some picture comparing the nexus to the ipad (supposedly ~100 NTSC ColorGamut)

I concur to what has been said by most. The screen is one of the most beautiful screen on a phone. The GNex/pentile display is too bluish and I could not stand it. The S3 however, is looking pretty good, but doesn't hold water in my opinion. It is also comparable to the iPhone retina, but 4.7" > 4" any day.
Food for thought, you are less likely to carry several phones and compare screens in great detail every day. Get one with the display you like and stick with it. I had GNex for a year and every bloody day I'm thinking of getting a One X, One S or Lumia 920, that is until N4
All in all, it bogs down to your preferences. I for one doesn't mind a faux black on a phone, try using it for a few days and you won't really care. On the other hand, I expect a true black on my HDTV since that's where I consume HD content..

I would have bought the Xperia Z if the screen was better. It has some lag on the stock ROM but custom Roms fix that so that isn't an issue. But the screen I cannot deal with.

Yeah, if it's not for the screen. I would have gone for the Xperia Z a long time ago! That washed out screen was such a huge disappoinment:crying:
We'll I've got used to the screen now and guess what???
I started up the GS3 yesterday to see how bad the XZ screen really is.
Talk about a painful experience. Text was blurry and literally hurt my eyes compared to Xperia and colours are atrocious.
And a new patch from Sony is going to include white balance adjustment in display settings.
Also 4Mb photos
Personally Xperia Z is a better phone than GS3, HTC OneX, Nexus 4 and HTC One. All phones I have owned bar the One... I used one for two days and that was enough.
My Xperia Z just works...

GS3's screen is a horrible display and I agree that Xperia Z is much better, but still fall far behind other flagships and even its predecessors like Xperia S, Ion in term of contrast. Even Xperia ZL has better screen than Z...:silly:.
That's not to mention about the viewing angle, which is seriously much worse than HTC old models that use TFT Super LCD
Viewing angles are fine, I love the screen. But... Screens and viewing angles etc- never been a problem or complaint until the reviews started moaning lol.
#SaveHTC
Most people have gadgets which has bad viewing angles. Like TFT monitors at work and home (most people dont have IPS monitors because of cost and response time on gaming), many tablets, and even LCD TV's.
And now a mobile phone with excellent color reproduction and resolution is getting bad reception because of viewing angles?
This is what I call hypocrasy.
Opinions are opinions but some people really have no justice.
Xperia Z is the best mobile phone I have used for a long time. It is an overall perfect phone. It doesnt deserve these critics at all.
Technological hype and competition has come to such a level that people are like slaves of media and corporations now.
Sorry for my small rant

Slightly washed out colours???
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess mate.
I'm getting 4.5hrs screen on time with 13-14 hrs use. Great battery life.
Speaker is loud and connected to my Yamaha/ Energy home system sounds amazing. Samsung could only wish.

If you actually pick up and use an Xperia Z... it's very bright and colourful. If you go into the gallery or watch videos and BE2 kicks in... it's INSANELY beautiful.
Here are some pictures I took VERY quickly... Ignore the badly put on screen protector, I wacked it on quickly to prevent the ASF being scratched until my proper one arrives.
On approx 30% brightness

Rumour means internet bullcrap in this context.
I have the device, don't have to visit shops lol, so I see you just repeat what you've read.
And compared it to all top end phones. Nothing is washed out.
It's just a UI which may make such an impression as well as Sony's contrast control mechanism
which prevents excessive batt usage which works on Sony's grey UI.
But the real performance is on par with SGSIV, HTC One etc.
There are videos showing it.
So please, stop the crap if you don't even know what you're talking about.

It's like you guys only check for contrast ratio when you look at displays. Ridiculous! The S has a horrible yellowy screen which is also present in the iPhone 5 and others.
The Z is the first flagship phone in a long time not to suffer from this tint issue.
I for one now see why Sony opted for the contrast ratio and color calibration, it produces a clear display free of that horrible tint.
Long may this continue, if you want a high contrast screen with yellowy look then you've got a lot of options out there.

can only speak as I find and mine seems fine

Screen replaced--looks matte finish

My display was replaced by Sony as soft-keys weren't working. Also they upgraded to v5.1.1 Lollipop.
But the new replacement display doesnt look like ORIGINAL ones which I had prior to replacement. This new one looks Matte finish type while the one I had originally was Glossy.
Or either the new display is not of a Z3 but of other compact phones like Z1 compact etc. Can this happen??
I can easily make it out as the regular HD wallpapers which I applied on old and new display looks different on same brightness settings.
Or is it so that the new display batch is improved etc. Or is it just that lollipop 5.1.1 displays graphics in this way???
I'm feeling pissed off!!!
Update*****The wallpapers have a pinkish tint on them.
In fact if I apply same wallpaper and take screenshot it appears differently than on previous display. So now its not just the display issue, seems somethings wrong internally. Coz a screenshot should come natural as it has nothing to do what colors the display produces right???

See the difference between these two images. the z1 compact screen is smaller so its not that. Is it at all possible you can take a picture of the screen?
Did you have xreality engine off on the other phone? It might be on here. FYI: my screen didnt change its look when i upgraded to 5.1.1
For all you know you scored a screen from the Z5 compact seeing as the z3 compact is discontinued

I removed screen protector and it really doesnt look that good as was before.
Wanna know if lollipop is causing this issue coz read somewhere in changelog that lollipop did some gui enhancements as well.
The difference not comes from lollipop. I also change my screen before 2 or 3 months and it's not the same as the original. It is more like amoled now(more hot colors).

Is it so?? Then why cant Sony put the same old screen.
This amoled seems sacrifices on color quality.
Means tomorrow even phones battery or others part will be replaced by subsequent alternate option rather than the original factory fitted ones????
Lol they didn't put an amoled screen on it.
I doubt that they used amoled

This is BS, only the Z3 compact screen fits the Z3 compact connector and frame which is an LCD screen with a glossy finish. AMOLED is a proprietary technology from Samsung and Sony never used OLED nor AMOLED displays on any smartphone.
If you had your display replaced at a dubious shop then it could be that they used a counterfeit display which could have much more variations vs. the OEM one but not for a warranty repair obviously.
Now it can be that your display has a slightly different brightness or color temperature vs. your old display which is totally normal. If it has a matte finish it is that you did not remove the screen protector or left one on the screen.
I am not saying the display that they put on my phone is amoled it has colors like amoled that I didn't like.
I'm curious can you post a picture?
I think there's just a difference in your white balance. And it just seems a little warner now. I wish my white balance was warmer

I had a screen issue also, but Sony replaced the whole phone with a new one. They said that changing the screen couldn't guarantee the waterproof.

As amoled is a better quality display you do not have either an amoled display or a display that looks like amoled.
Current amoled is much better quality, Check Wikipedia for a list of high end flagship that use it. The Nokia N808 used a 3 year old super amoled that is better than anything on the market even today.
So you can get that idea out of your head. I would pay a lot extra for a super amoled screen I my Z3C.
My GF has a Z1C which is 0.3" smaller but the screen looks like you say in comparison to the Z3C.

Nokia were the first with amoled displays so I highly doubt it is Samsung proprietary technology, and their displays were consistently better than any other manufacturer.
The dodgy repairer sounds like a very possible option. I had something similar in SE Asia from Sony Thailand - complete BS "repair", luckily I put it in a glass of water in front of the Sony store manager so when it leaked water and died he could say absolutely nothing and had to give me a refund, well the fact I made a song and dance and a customer about to buy a large new tv walked out really did it. (I bought my current z3C in the US)

Well I never used any of those features like x-reality and super-vivid as Image enhancement was always set off by me.
And those reference screenshots as well didnt had x-reality or vivid turned on.
In fact I never saw any difference eve on my screen even if I turn on x-reality or super-vivid.
A screenshot will not show screen differences, it'll just show the screen on the device I use to view it I.e. My phone or my laptop for me, your phone or whatever for you. So the screen shots are useless. If you don't believe me go and look at the screenshot on your computer.
If yo cannot see the difference with x-reality on maybe that is where you trouble lays? Your eyes.
sorry to be rude but There is a vast difference with these options turned on or off.
So once again, still trying to help you, go and turn these settings on, and then check and modify your white balance - do these fix your problem?
