How a 5.2" fhd display will have 500+ ppi?
Sent from my Xperia ZQ

well if true it looks like sony is keeping with 2 flagship devices per year which ups the ante on other manufacturers who just have 1 per year and might give them an edge.
looks like i might not have my z1 too long

4K screen. Completely unnecessary on anything smaller than 50 inches, imo...

Sure, but there will not be a 4K screen for the moment. It has taken at least a year to evolve from 720p to 1080p. Which is about 1.5x as many pixels. I don't believe they will push 4K on 5" or 6" within a year. Furthermore it isn't necessary to go from 1080p to a higher resolution on that screen size.
Also the processor wouldn't really make no sense. It's essentially the same as the current Snapdragon 800 that is used in the Galaxy Note 3 and Z1. Only the GPU and memory a tad faster, but not anything you would notice in daily life. I think that the new Xperia will use a new(er) chipset than the 800 series all together.
Regarding the camera, that sounds about right. I don't think that Sony will push 3GB of RAM into a device though, I think they will stick with either 2GB or 4GB. Which are both more than sufficient for now.

If it's really true it's using a 4K screen, I wonder how the battery will cope.

If they'll still support z/z1 in next year, I think I may go for that phone, or next flagship :good:

The phone display isn't 4K

Nice thing in recording 4k videos is, you can zoooom and zoooom in and almost don't lose sharpness

So playback on 50 inches will be fantastic.

I think 5" is the end on mobile phones, everything bigger is just not good to handle...
But 4k Recording seems nice, then we can zoom without loosing sharpness

You can get 5,2'' in the same physical size of the xperia Z if you cut down on the bezels a lot, like the LG optmimus g2, for example.
For example, you could make a "Z2 L" with 5,2'' screen, with something like the ZL very thin bezels, and you'll have roughly the same footprint as the Z1 for example, but on a larger screen than 5,0''.
More than that i agree it's overkill, i don't want to walk around with a phone larger than my XZ, wich is already maximum overkill in size. I got used to it, but bigger it's a no-no for me. Only way to make a screen larger and maintain a good size it's realy to cut the bezels, something sony realy did well with the ZL.

Well even if it is 4K video recording I don't think it will be more than 12 fps (that's what Gopro Hero 3 Black has at the moment). First they will need to figure out a better way to compress the videos and in general it is pretty pointless. I would much rather have a good quality 720p with 120fps where I can actually use the full potential of the phones chip on slow-mo video processing, effects and such. Imo 4K will be pointless for at least the next year or 2 until the price of storage drops and new video formats (with better compression) develop plus what is the point of keeping 4K videos if most of your devices don't support the playback. Sony's 4K TVs do upscaling anyways

My 4k screen comment was sarcasm directed at the ridiculous 500+ppi on a 5.2 inch screen, since 1080p is "only" around 440 on a 5 incher.

Wow these specs look crazy!

4.7 inch is ideal for mobile phones

Sorry to say, but 1080p has 2,25x more pixels than 720p (1280x720=921.600 pixels, and 1920x1080=2.073.600 pixels)
If they keep the same size and overall design as the Xperia Z while increasing screen size and power, this Z2 will be my next phone. I couldn't be happier with what sony have done with the Z.
I am also waiting for some water resistant 10,1" Xperia tablet with a minimum of Snapdragon 800 chipset. Come on Sony guys!!!

Even if he could it'd be like 5-10 frames per second - assuming the hardware / cam drivers are modified to support that. Why'd you want 4K though when 99% of the people don't have a 4K display yet ;p Not to mention how much crazy space uncomrpessed 4K vids will take when I panic at the speed of 720p/1080p videos use up my s4's memory / sdcard.
that is what 64gb memor card are for and sammies can take 288gb memory cards if you have a ton of cash to burn

Whatabout an app that can record 1080p video, and at the same time take full resolution pics automatically as fast as the hardware can support it. Does anyone know of an app that does this?
Would it be possible to run this through a PC video app that uses the pics as p-frames?
Basically how divx works. You have intermittent hi res frames, and between you have the low res diferences between the frames.

I understand that part.
What Im trying to get at is that while I am making a video, I can simultaneously take pictures.
I was asking if it would be possible to use the pictures as the full frames, (at 4k resolution) and use the 1080p video frames as the inbetween "filler".
If there was an app that automatically took pictures at a set interval while recording video, Im sure it would make it a lot easier to encode 4k-type video from this setup.
Anyone with experience in video encoding and b and p frames?

negative the s3 the note 2 the s4 and the note 3 can all take for resolution pictures while recording video
the catch is the aspect ratio has to match so in 16 X 9 still picture must also be the same aspect ratio so for example on my note 2 the pictures are 6mp on the note 3 and s4 9.6mpiirc
And it can do this as fast as you can press the button at least it can on my note 2
I use it quite often
I am betting it might not be able to do this at 4k on the note 3 however.
Or get 2k recording on s4 .it is possible

The S4 shares its camera module (Sony IMX135), which supports [email protected], with the Note 3.
However, it's also limited by its SoC (4K recording is mostly CPU-limited, not sensor limited), and will have to be overclocked to at least 2.35-2.4GHz to match Note 3's 2.3GHz Krait 400.
A simple camera app port from Note 3 would probably work but lag.

It's not SOC limited and even if you over clock it to 2.4Ghz, it won't record in 4K.
That is because the Adrenocortical 320 cannot decode video at such high resolution

But the Galaxy S4's hardware is too slow for that and would overheat.
The Note 3 can record in 4k because the Sensor is the same, just faster.

Digital Zoom=Yes(Lossless to!)/No/Yes
Photo While VRec: Yes/No/Only if Image Stabilization (Digital) is Disabled
Filesize Display: KB/KB/Kb „and Left Space in MB on the Storage you're recording right now"
Video Stabilization: Digital/No/Digital
The Xperia Z2 Zooms Lossless only up to 1080p to protect off „overheating"! 61,2% Stupid, 2,35% Intelligent!
I did record 30 min With the S4 at Maximum 4x Zoom - it got very hot but kept recording!
The Note 3 and the S5+Alpha can Record 5 Minutes per QFHD (=3840x2016 Pixels; 4k=4096x2160! ) Clip, if that would be to prevent an overheating, then why are you able to restart your recording right after the „05-Minutes Mark" -?
Other Feature Comparrissions between those 3 Phones will be added by an Edit!
Did you know:
-The S3 records as good video as S5 in only-FHD mode without getting hot!
The sucking S3 has a better FHD than the S4 because the S4 gets Moiré-Artefacts on the GSM-Arena Video Comparrisson!
-After the S3 Mini was released, many people did verwechseln this!
Some people got a 4.8 Big Phone with a good Screen Resoulution and good FHD-Camera but some others got a Low-Res pixelly phone with low performance because they did not see the „Mini" in the name!
The S3 Mini is not a good phone. The only good thing is the „S3" in it which reminds to that sucking 2012 Flagship Phone! M3 would be a better name!

(Solved) Youtube videos looks better on old Nexus 7 than on the 2013 Nexus 7

Hi!
I have both the new Nexus 7 (2013) and the previous one. Noticed right away that Youtube videos looks sharper on the old Nexus 7. Have compared the same video on the two tablets.
Is it simply because of the higher resolution on the Nexus 7 2nd gen?
1280x800 on the old one vs 1920x1200 on the new one.
Edit: Uninstalling the latest Youtube update completly fixes the problem. Thank you Tranceiver!

Dude im serious. They look alot worse on the new Nexus. Lower res and with jagged edges and stuff. Is it something wrong with the tablet?
For example this YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE4gFmCiYAU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Looks nice and sharp on my old Nexus 7 but on the new one the edges are jagged, especially on the name tags.

On the real here, I find that everything looks much better on my Nexus 7. Granted if you look at crappy encoded videos it will look like dingle berries on a baboons a$$. Simple fix, stop looking at the baboons a$$.
On the other hand, you could have a bad screen. Bring your tablet to your local electronics store that has a 7 on display. Bring up the same video on both and compare.

How does my linked video look for you? Does edges look jagged. Look especially on the two player name plates in the upper middle.
Let me check real quick.
Update: Looks fine to me.

There are more pixels on the new Nexus 7, therefore lower quality videos will look lower quality than they would on the new Nexus 7 with less pixels. I can see what you're talking about and it's simply because there are many more pixels on the new Nexus 7 as opposed to the old.
This is a common issue with high-res screens and lower-res videos.
If the scaling algorithms are not advanced it looks blocky and horrible.
If you have a single pixel and it now needs to occupy 4 pixels on the high res screen, the simplest way is just to make every pixel 2x2, but then everything looks blocky and you have stair steps.
More advanced algorithms will do a better job making things look smooth.
Videos almost always look the best on a screen that matches the resolution of the video, but can be made to look decent on higher res screens if done right.

It's not just you. I think the new Youtube app screwed something up. Playing the same video in BSPlayer looks far, far better. I'll try to take some screenshots for you to compare. :good:
It's also definitely not playing in 1080p in the Youtube app.
Full sized unedited screenshots here:

What sfhub said is probably the right answer. I bet Youtube isn't doing the best filtering when it comes to upscaling resolution.
The pictures I posted above are with HD youtube setting, and 1080p BSplayer setting.
I've tried switching in BSPlayer between Software decoding, Hardware, and System. It made no difference that I can see (though I can't take screenshots in hardware mode).
I would suggest watching youtube videos in BSPlayer until they fix this crap. You can do that by
hitting the "share" button in youtube
copy URL
start BSPlayer
hit the + button (top right)
delete the "s" from the "https"
done!
Edit: The older version of Youtube has better quality. You can just go into app settings and uninstall the updates.
Thx everyone for the replys and nice explanations!
Was afraid that there were something wrong with the tablet or something. Because it dont look good at all.

Between the BSPlayer and Youtube, that doesn't look like scaling issues, it just looks like the source material is different resolutions. Is the problem that the Youtube app won't use the hires version or is it telling you it is using the hires version but still downloading the lowres version.
Now even with lower resolution video, Youtube should be able to do a better job on the scaling, which is probably a different issue.
Are you guys sure you have HD enabled? Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right while a video is playing and make sure the white HD letters have a white cloud halo behind it. It's misleading because the HD letters are in white with no cloud halo when it's disabled. With HD enabled in YouTube it looks sharp like the BSPlayer screenshot and jaggy when disabled.
I can't believe not more people notice this. On the YouTube app, the overall picture quality is sharp. It's just the jaggedness that's all over the place. HD is enabled.
I thought it was the device's scaling issues so I tried to stream 720p and 1080p videos from my computer using MX Player and the PQ was as crisp as ever. I mainly use my Nexus 7 (both 2012 and 2013) as a YouTube device and I'm rather disappointed by this...

It seems much better than xperia z!!!
Not impressive. Not much better than other phones with smaller sensors. Others even have OIS which the Z1 lacks. It can only shoot in 8MP in 16:9 and with the default superior auto mode. The resolution is no better than other cameras, nor the pixel size. It always amazes me how Sony can screw up using their own sensors, like they did with the Xperia Z, when other companies can use their Exmor RS sensors and do wonders, like Samsung and Apple. These images aren't convincing me of the ONE SONY. The Cybershot division is probably hanging up their phones and turning up their noses in disgust whenever the smartphone division tries to collaborate. Old traditions and rivalries die hard. They sure aren't gonna divulge any secrets for such petty things as CELLPHONE cameras.

Sony doesn't have OIS because it doesn't need them, they already have Steadyshot which is a hardware + software stabilizer...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SteadyShot
". It uses motion sensors to detect the user's movements. SteadyShot then compensates for some of these movements, in some versions by moving the optics and in some versions by moving the image sensor in an opposite direction to the movement."
only time will tell who is better...
Go buy your G2 or HTC, we will buy the Z1, and lets see who will be the first to sell his phone

Actually, for some time already Sony is using digital version of Steadyshot for video cameras and even in their flagship DSLT's.
It gives results comparable to sensor shift stabilisation but without drawbacks like increased power consumption and heat generation.
So in case of video recording that is good that they have included Steadyshot for video recording that really makes a difference and isn't only typical digital stabilisation with different name.
Thanks for those examples not looking bad at all at this stage.

Though the Xperia Z1 easily aces through the rest, he feels extremely insecure about Sony grand success. Don't worry. It's normal for a Samsung fanboy. Even Recombu, the one who took and posted the photos say XPERIA Z1 is the winner.
It's true, maybe the camera from z1 is not very good, but that's probably because of firmware. I took some photos in low light conditions and pictures are full of noise.. Let's wait for some updates.
Some real positives in this test, look great compared to the 808 and HTC One mini.

I certainly hope that with real world conditions it can deliver quality like shown above.
The best part is the 2 sensors that i have noticed that perform beautifully are the IMX179 and IMX214. Obvious 214 will be even better for sure.. Really hope they launch the phone around the different parts of the world soon.
Low light capabilities are incredible, if you search you will understand that how its better than A Nikon D3100 in low light.

A good Sony IMX sensor with a proper lens and image signal processor can bring wonderful images, see iPhone 5S. Which is why I'm puzzled to this day how come Sony's own Xperia Z, Z1 and even some Z2 shots look so over-processed, showing some lens inconsistencies and some SW errors too. Both the Oppo Find 7 and the OnePlus One launch with the new IMX214, and I'm curious how will they fare compared to other Exmors, the Lumias and ISOCELL. So far it is promising.

I agree with you on the Sony Devices part. I have seen that actually. Sony likes to complicate stuff, i really don't know why. Where they can have a easy way to fi thing, they go the other way. Trust me they have 3-4 different apps for the camera. You tell me who in 2014 does that?! lol .. And I read an article, the ISOCELL vs the IMX179 comparison. (Here). The IMX was better
I really need to have a look at the Lumia's though, they have almost DSLR type quality..
The S5 camera is much, MUCH better than the Nexus 5 to be frank. But the IMX214 is a new generation Sony sensor.
aren't you guys a bit scared about the camera app?

Depending on scene and light conditions, today's smartphones can take impressive photos, see some form my S5 review. As far as dynamic range and per pixel sharpness, 1+1 fits right in among the best of Android photography based on what I've seen so far.

Xperia Z3+ & Z2 Lowlight Photo & Display Comparison
Just did a quick comparison between Z3+ & Z2 camera (lowlight pictures for now due to bad weather!). Sony did improve the processing in auto mode especially auto white balance. On Z2, auto white balance is always a bit yellowish. I also included shots from Sony RX100M2 & Xperia ZL
And the phone didn't overheat yet with my regular usage! I'll be playing some heavy games this weekend and will update if things heat up!
Photo Bucket Link
Here is the display comparison with default white balance setting on both. Z3+ has a (much) brighter display and I'll add an outdoor picture later on. It's colder too but it can be tweaked by playing with the white balance settings.

Hey, would you mind answering a couple of questions with regards to this phone?I am thinking to upgrade from my Z1, currently using my brother's Z3.
How much RAM is available in average? Z3 has 1.5GB, but I've seen a report that Z3+ has around 860-900MB, which is quite a downgrade.
Another question is, how do speakers perform compared to other devices you own?
And the last one, does the device really heat up during extended use of camera or media exaggerates?
Thanks a lot for taking your time!

I was planning to get that app! So yes, I'll include some samples from that app too.

I get like 1.6GB - 1.1GB memory available (screenshots below) - depends on the number of running apps though. Just close the apps when you're done. They actually close pretty easily (from the multitasking view/button) unlike the previous android builds where they used to disappear from the list, but kept running in background.
Speakers are very good, maybe a bit better than Z2. I need to check on that when I get back home. Since you are using a Z3, you might find those a bit muffled though as Z3 speakers are more exposed. I'm not sure as I don't have a Z3.
I did a 4K video test (indoor). The camera app closed after 6.5 minutes. With heavy usage, it does get warm. So does my Z2. Z3+ probably gets warm a bit earlier than Z2 . There's certainly some exaggeration as it doesn't 'overheat'. Nothing exploded after 40 minutes of gaming It certainly got pretty warm, but that's expected. I personally don't think it's a big deal.
Btw, since you have a Z3, did you notice any image file size increase compared to Z1 in superior auto? I see around 300KB more on Z3+ compared to Z2.
nice, i think sony may have done well with the update for Z3+/4, judging from the video below, the Z3+/4 lasted for 11~12 mins on 4k video recording.
theres no guarantee that the Z3+ in the video is using the latest update from sony.

Edit: Oh shoot I am so sorry. I read it again lol my bad
19mins, whoaa, I think he might be in an AC room.
Thanks a lot! Seems like a great phone, especially considering that I do not play mobile games at all, will be a huge upgrade from my Z1.

Z1's size is 2.27 MB, while Z3's is 1.41 MB, but I assume it also depends on a lot of other conditions, such as lighting and stuff.

Maybe somebody with Z3+ will confirm...
The article says Z3+ doesn't allow Manual ISO control in higher res than 8mpx.

Nope, Haven't used the app since My Z2 doesn't support, I thought it would work fine since the video showed everything should work.
Too bad the app crashed, I hope you're up to date bro. Anyways Waiting to see more photos from you
