(Solved) Youtube videos looks better on old Nexus 7 than on the 2013 Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Hi!
I have both the new Nexus 7 (2013) and the previous one. Noticed right away that Youtube videos looks sharper on the old Nexus 7. Have compared the same video on the two tablets.
Is it simply because of the higher resolution on the Nexus 7 2nd gen?
1280x800 on the old one vs 1920x1200 on the new one.
Edit: Uninstalling the latest Youtube update completly fixes the problem. Thank you Tranceiver!

Dude im serious. They look alot worse on the new Nexus. Lower res and with jagged edges and stuff. Is it something wrong with the tablet?
For example this YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE4gFmCiYAU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Looks nice and sharp on my old Nexus 7 but on the new one the edges are jagged, especially on the name tags.

On the real here, I find that everything looks much better on my Nexus 7. Granted if you look at crappy encoded videos it will look like dingle berries on a baboons a$$. Simple fix, stop looking at the baboons a$$.
On the other hand, you could have a bad screen. Bring your tablet to your local electronics store that has a 7 on display. Bring up the same video on both and compare.

How does my linked video look for you? Does edges look jagged. Look especially on the two player name plates in the upper middle.

Let me check real quick.
Update: Looks fine to me.

It doesent feel low res, blurry or jagged at all for you?

There are more pixels on the new Nexus 7, therefore lower quality videos will look lower quality than they would on the new Nexus 7 with less pixels. I can see what you're talking about and it's simply because there are many more pixels on the new Nexus 7 as opposed to the old.

This is a common issue with high-res screens and lower-res videos.
If the scaling algorithms are not advanced it looks blocky and horrible.
If you have a single pixel and it now needs to occupy 4 pixels on the high res screen, the simplest way is just to make every pixel 2x2, but then everything looks blocky and you have stair steps.
More advanced algorithms will do a better job making things look smooth.
Videos almost always look the best on a screen that matches the resolution of the video, but can be made to look decent on higher res screens if done right.

It's not just you. I think the new Youtube app screwed something up. Playing the same video in BSPlayer looks far, far better. I'll try to take some screenshots for you to compare. :good:
It's also definitely not playing in 1080p in the Youtube app.
Full sized unedited screenshots here:

I've cropped out just the messed up text part:

Just as the 1080p videot doesn't look amazing on nexus 10

What sfhub said is probably the right answer. I bet Youtube isn't doing the best filtering when it comes to upscaling resolution.

The pictures I posted above are with HD youtube setting, and 1080p BSplayer setting.
I've tried switching in BSPlayer between Software decoding, Hardware, and System. It made no difference that I can see (though I can't take screenshots in hardware mode).
I would suggest watching youtube videos in BSPlayer until they fix this crap. You can do that by
hitting the "share" button in youtube
copy URL
start BSPlayer
hit the + button (top right)
delete the "s" from the "https"
done!
Edit: The older version of Youtube has better quality. You can just go into app settings and uninstall the updates.

Thx everyone for the replys and nice explanations!
Was afraid that there were something wrong with the tablet or something. Because it dont look good at all.

Between the BSPlayer and Youtube, that doesn't look like scaling issues, it just looks like the source material is different resolutions. Is the problem that the Youtube app won't use the hires version or is it telling you it is using the hires version but still downloading the lowres version.
Now even with lower resolution video, Youtube should be able to do a better job on the scaling, which is probably a different issue.

Are you guys sure you have HD enabled? Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right while a video is playing and make sure the white HD letters have a white cloud halo behind it. It's misleading because the HD letters are in white with no cloud halo when it's disabled. With HD enabled in YouTube it looks sharp like the BSPlayer screenshot and jaggy when disabled.

I can't believe not more people notice this. On the YouTube app, the overall picture quality is sharp. It's just the jaggedness that's all over the place. HD is enabled.
I thought it was the device's scaling issues so I tried to stream 720p and 1080p videos from my computer using MX Player and the PQ was as crisp as ever. I mainly use my Nexus 7 (both 2012 and 2013) as a YouTube device and I'm rather disappointed by this...

Xoom vs XXX Camera Comparison thread. Warning 56k ;-)

Hey guys,
Im composing this thread to include as the title states, pictures taken from the Xoom's camera VS pictures taken from other devices (IE. other tabs, phones or cameras.) With that i'll be posting pictures taken from my Xoom 5MP, Droid Incredible 8MP, and FujiFilm Finepix S1500 10MP. WIth that, all devices settings will be on auto detect, set to default. This will be ongoing and others are welcome to join in, just post the specs of your other devices to form a baseline and keep images no bigger than 1024x768.
As some had stated earlier in other posts, the few second review of the photo taken on the Xoom does not do the image justice at all. Its not until its transfered to desktop that I can see the true detail.

The only thing im disappointed in here is the pixelation on the zoomed in shots here. Otherwise they turned out great. Wasn't able to snap any comparison shots with the Incredible here but ill try tomorrow.

Thanks, yeah the zoom on the Xoom is a bit disappointing but im hoping to get some video as well although I don't have an HD device to compare and also front camera as well.. One thing I wish was included is the ISO settings. I love that on my Incredible I can turn the ISO up and down depending on what im shooting.
And thanks for noticing the street hah
Placeholder for some more comparison shots tomorrow.
I am very disappointed in the Xoom's camera. I scheduled a photo shoot yesterday, and rather than using my Nikon D700 with 24-70 2.8 Nikkor Lens, I figured, hey, my tablet computer has a camera on it, I'll just use that.
Sorry, but that tiny little chip on the back of my tablet just can't keep up with my dSLR.
Seriously, other than annoying friends/family by secretly videotaping them drunk while you innocently play on your tablet, what's the purpose of the back camera?
Come to think of it... that is an excellent reason to have a camera there.

You actually thought it would compete with your DSLR. It's mot supposed to be a $2000 worth quality camera.

Slightly disappointed in the quality of the Xoom shots, but TBH wasn't expecting much. I do want to play with the 720p video though....

if a 500MP camera can take good photos, what is the point of DSLR? LOL
or why would anyone buy a camera in the 1st place, some phones even have 12MP camera, just buy that.

The resolution a digital camera does not necessarily indicate the picture quality. For example a 6mp DSLR is far superior to a 12mp point and shoot or a phone camera.

Yes, I actually thought a little chip slapped on the back of an $800 tablet could compete with a $4k camera rig. Why couldn't it?
I'm also dissapointed that my Honda got beaten by a Ferrari on the interstate yesterday.

you need to put more go fast stickers on your honda then.
Thank you for this comparison. I have a Xoom and a Droid 1. I definitely can tell a quality difference with the Xoom. It is much better especially with flash.
Just visited a Carphone Warehouse store (UK) and noticed they have a plethora of tablets on display. 1 that caught my attention was the Asus Transformer, since I was considering getting this or the Xoom, but I went for the Xoom instead.
So I had a go at the Transformer (minus the keyboard), performance felt pretty much the same as Xoom... until I played with its camera... Good grief that thing's camera is miles better than the Xoom's. It's so clear, sharp, and responsive, actually surprised me. Then I quickly went to play with the Xoom, because I don't remember my Xoom has thos qualities... and yep... blurry, slower, quality like 1 MPx camera... yuck. I never realized how bad the Xoom camera is compared to a cheaper Tegra 2 tablet! Do you think Moto/Google can improve Xoom's camera by soft update? Or is Xoom's camera hardware is just utter crap?
Some comments from a serious photographer...
You will find much better results if you export the Xoom pics to a proper PC and use a good photo editing application to process. I use Photoshop CS5 and use some sharpening and other parameter adjustments to get very good results. The zoom function of the camera is an electronic zoom and will never be as good as just getting closer. Also, just look at the size of the camera lens and compare it to your point-and-shoot or DSLR. It will never get as good pictures as a dedicated camera.
Added: The camera apps on the Xoom cannot compete with a proper application on a PC or Mac to achieve good pictures

The first photos I took with my Xoom looked soft and blurry. Cleaned the lens (full of fingerprints) and from then on the photos were sharp.

iPhone 4 vs. Xperia Arc : A personal perspective

first off, I'm a long-time X10 user for my personal needs. I've been saddled with an iPhone for work, and been looking forward to a gingerbread phone to switch over to (my company's internal apps only support Blackberry, iOS4 and gingerbread). I've been itching for the Arc since seeing it's droolicious lines, so how's it stack up?
First off, the mandatory p0rn shots:

Yes, Arc is sexier.
Screen on:
Again, the Arc leads the pack... by a mile...
In over 24 hours of full use (currently the iphone is my primary work phone again for data migration to the Arc), I've found the arc to be zippy, responsive, a joy for games, and great for video.
Battery life:
The battery life has been good! I only notice a drain when running Whatsapp, but that drains the battery on the iPhone like a $%&^$%# as well. But so far, it's lasting me a whole day easily.
Screen: gorgeous! Yes, it's not as fine on the pixel detail as the iPhone 4's screen, and the IPS technology of the iPhone 4 gives some slightly better viewing angles, but honestly I can't complain. It's bright, colorful, and a joy to just stare at.
Keypad: Very fast, responsive. No complaints, and i prefer the android spell checker 100000x over the iPhone version. I just wish I knew how to turn on my Smartkeyboard Pro on here - any clues?
Call quality: Generally the call quality on the iPhone 4 has made me want to vomit blood anyway compared to the x10. Now with the Arc, I get back the clear voice I used to hear, and the noise canceling seems to work really well!
Music quality: I use the same pair of Bang & Olufsen headphones on both to compare. Honestly, both are excellent, no complaints. i expected the iPhone to do well - after all it's an iPod with a phone attached.
General feel: Yes, it definitely feels plasticky compared to the glass-and-aluminum slab of the iPhone 4. But the iPhone 4 is exactly that - a slab. It has zero considerations for ergonomics or fitting a hand well. And it's heavy. The Arc feel comfy, the smooth finish feels good, and it's soooo light!
Overall, I'm really happy to finally be back on android. The iOS was just too limiting - even jailbroken! And the Arc ticks all the right boxes for me. I'm happy to send the iPhone back to my company's IT department.
Thanks for your review, i enjoy reading reviews by members for members cause i cant have this phone on my hands when its not in retail shops.
Hopefully mine will arive before the end of this week

Dear Rashkae:
Go to settings>language & keyboard>you should find, among others, Smart Keypad Pro,( assuming you installed). make sure to enable it with a checkmark. Now open any messaging application and long - press any field.. such as where you wold enter the body of text... one of the options should be input method... select Smart Keyboard Pro. Done.

Regarding "glass-and-aluminum slab": Like everyone else, I love good materials, but the iPhone4 construction is stupid beyond believe.
My sister's iPhone4 shattered the first time it slipped out of her hand from maybe 2 feet. And I've read reports on the net from aluminum shelled phones (Desire HD, for instance) that got dents when there wouldn't be a mark on simple plastic.
High quality plastic is much better for a mobile device. My old full-plastic Omnia HD (heavier than the Arc) survived a lot of drops and still looks like new.
As long as it doesn't feel as cheap as the Galaxy S...

For me even faster. it's helped by the fact there's an actual camera button. No need to dig through app menus and tap on an on-screen button. Shot to shot itself seems faster than the iPhone4 too.

Ok, so instead of smaller buds i used nice full-sized Shure cans... and actually the X10 sounds BETTER than the iPhone 4 with these headphones. The notes are crisper, the mids and highs are more balanced with the bass. and that's not even using the EQ yet. But, I must admit the difference is veeeeeery subtle.

LG G4 camera's problems

Hello I wanted to create this thread because this phone is really nice and has a great camera, but not perfect at all, first problem is the raw mode, it's cool but why is has some darker corner and green tint ?? and it's only 20Mo instead of 30Mo with Camera FV-5 and ProShot apps.
But Vincent2167 find a calibration file : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61360315&postcount=314
LG still have to fix it and don't need this...
An other problem is the camera mode, we can't record in 1080p in 60fps, it kind of sucks for a flagship in 2015, but the worst is the 4K video, the video is pixelated, try to shot a landscape with a blue sky, you will noticed that the sky is very pixelated... probably because the bitrate is too low, only 30Mbps for 4K is low low. I read it's almost 50Mbps for the Galaxy S6.
To finish, the camera mode when you do a zoom, a close up, the mic change and the sound quality recorded become very bad, especially when you want to record a concert, you can see it here :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKJZqdD8oZc
@0:34 when we zoom the mic change and the sound is closed, pretty bad, when it unzoom the sound come to reality @1:28
Edit : I forgot the video stabilisation, I think LG can do better, and has to do something to activated or deactivated the stabilisation because it makes the picture very distorted when moving.
Edit 2 : The front camera pretty good details, but the background is always overexposed even with HDR activated, so bye selfies with nice landscape.
So please LG fix this, it's nothing, sound like you just wanted to contain all real potentials of the G4, and wait to make for G5 or what ?
Edit 3 : Since Marshmallow, videos in 4K have better bitrate, 46Mbps instead of 30Mpbs only with Lollipop.
Why doesn't the camera app have a night mode setting anymore? I'm too old to remember ISO and shutter settings anymore. In fact, the stock camera app seems to be missing many features that existed on the G2 stock camera app.

Because its not needed any more. The G4 will take a night shot by itself if it thinks its necessary. It even does this with the front camera.

Did you see this mod ?
60fps does not seem stable but higher bitrate 48Mbs? at 4k looks to work. Needs root though.
Suspect they used a lower bitrate rate to keep file size, power consumption as well as heat low as possible. With the Z3 in warmer climates you could not get it to record 4k for more than 3 minutes (!) cold weather was better.

LG has been doing this since the G2. They think voice is more important.
Edit : I forgot the video stabilisation, I think LG can do better, and has to do something to activated or deactivated the stabilisation because it makes the picture very distorted when moving.
So please LG fix this, it's nothing, sound like you just wanted to contain all real potentials of the G4, and wait to make for G5 or what ?

I find this one a bit odd almost like they did not get time to do it by the time of launch. it could be better.
Its early days so fixes are possible

You basically answered your own question. It's not needed anymore *because* we can now manually control ISO and shutter speed.

Now when I use manual mode and move the MF slider all the way up to auto the camera app fc's. Anybody else experience this?

Using a custom dpi?
Yep 560.

No I didn't thanks, but still need to be root.

Custom DPI does this. It does it with me too sometimes.
What is custom DPI ?
UP, I hope LG will fix it. Do you think the stabilisation in the video can be improved ?

Have you rooted devices? I own H815 and don't have OFF or ON on sliders in settings (just I or O).
If rooted, how did you change temperature? Root app?
No I'm not root, I found this picture here, and I went to the store, the LG G4 has different screen temps, in the store it was cold, mine is warmer... So I wanted to know which one has the best accurate colors or which one has been reviewed on internet.

Neither. The warm has more yellow and the cold has more blue. some people like colder screens ie blue. Course the degree of tint matters, if its too yellow or too blue then its not good as you never see white. This matters if you are watching movies or seeing photos but less if you are reading docs say..
The term 'accurate' isn't a good one because accurate colours require expensive screens to reproduce and are not attractive to view.
So vendors tweak the colours so that they pop and are pleasing. it seems pleasing is more important to people than accurate.
there is no way to calibrate a phone screen either, android does not support it yet like you could do using a spider say with a regular monitor. And this calibration needs to be done on a regular basis to remain accurate.
personally i prefer warmer as its easier on the eyes. on my laptop i have a utility called f.lux that drops the colour temperature after sunset. otherwise its like staring into a headlight! have to turn it off when viewing photos but otherwise for working its been great.
i did the same with my phone using an app called twilight.
Ok, but when I said accurate, I meant the color reproduction of the others colors, I think I read someone said warmer teint has better color reproduction than the cold one but I can't find it anymore. Personnaly I prefer cold, because of his real white, but not too cold to be blue.

Stretch to fit screen option

So we all know we can stretch the video to fit the screen while we watch YouTube in landscape mode.
But I don't have this! I used my phone 2 days and didn't have it. Then restored the phone installed it again. Now I did have the white little toggle/button to stretch, but not for long. After updating the apps and syncing my accounts and settings the button dissapeared again
The settings are enabled for all apps at 'apps for fullscreen settings'. Everything is enabled here. The weird thing is, when I watch trailers of games in Play Store ( it uses youtube) it does show the toggle and I can stretch it. But when I go to the YouTube app and watch any video on landscape mode, whatever I try it doesn't show up. It doesn't work.
Can anybody help me out with this please? Pretty annoying. Thanks in advance.
Hit the recent button a d you will see the full screen option bottom right of the screen

I did. It is not there either. In the beginning it was there also. Not anymore.
I have the same problem. Is there a fix for this?
Go to settings> apps> youtube>uninstall updates, return to factory youtube
That just worked for Me
Just tap the screen once in the right hand area while playing videos in the YouTube app and the button will appear. It's also "hidden" for me unless I tap the screen near the right edge.
This is the update , the app was adjusted to full screen as default so you cant stratch it in latest versions , reset the app to factory default
Yes I can. I can both crop to fit and switch back to original format using that little right hand button.
I have no complaints about the YouTube app myself. I was merely suggesting possible solutions for the op.

Can you please screenshot the youtube app in "full screen applications " in settings? I want to see if I have different setup
Here you go. Also, I attached images of both the "crop to fit" and "original" buttons. Those are the little white ones on the right side.

Im having the same issue with my S8+
Crop to fit is different than stretch to fit.
Its actually crops out some of the vid. You can miss headers, footers, or other captions for vids like this. Not to mention content.
Im only getting 2 options with the actual youtube app
"Fit to screen" which has the black bars and doesnt take up the entire screen to keep a certain aspect ratio or "Crop to fit" which takes up the whole screen but cuts out too much of the original video.
If i use the stock Samsung internet browser i can
-go to Youtube websits in Desktop mode/view.
-Select a video.
-Change the view or mode to mobile on the browser. May have to refresh it a couple times to get the Red play button in the middle of the vid.
-Then click the red play button
- Then the Youtube view option will give you 3 different options. "Fit to screen" "Crop to fit" or "Stretch to fit".
The Stretch to fit option gives full screen and doesnt crop out content or parts of the vid.
- However there is no way to change the video quality or resolution when you are using mobile view mode with the browser
So its like I have to choose between having a true full screen picture that doesnt crop out part of the vid VS. Having 720p or 1080p resolution.
This is pretty shocking to me for such a high end device
Why doesnt the youtube app just have a "stretch to fit" option like it does in mobile mode through the web browser????

I get where you're coming from.
Some videos have 3 "modes": original, stretch to fit and crop to fit. But those are few and far between. Most only have the crop to fit option.
In my experience, most videos have the content" centered "and i don't really miss anything but cropping. It depends on the video.
I suggest trying crop to fit and if you come across certain videos where you need all of the image just use the " original "format. Shouldn't be too many of those on YouTube, I think. [emoji53]

Thanks. Unfortunately a majority of the vids I watch have important details listed at the bottom.
What i dont get is the same videos that have 2 options on the youtube app have 3 options on the mobile browser view. Same exact videos. So i dont think its something that varies from vid to vid.
The only dowside with the mobile browser view is you cant switch it to HD resolution.

Tbh, I think you just need to hold tight and wait for youtube/samsung /app developers to figure this out.
It's still very early days for something pretty different from the norm. Growing pains are to be expected.
I expect (actually really hope) this will all be solved in 1-2 months time.
Just hang in there until then.

Honestly, do you think the Note 8 won't have the same aspect ratio?
I'm 100% sure it will. And these issues will be fixed way before then.
So the only realistic reason to wait for the Note 8 would be the S-pen, and not the aspect ratio.
It's up to you, mate.

It doesnt matter if it has the same ratio. If they fix in for the S8s before the Note 8 comes out. Chances are the Note 8 wont suffer from the same thing. So either way im waiting on a fix.
A guy in the other thread pointed out the Note 8 will have a better 4k screen. Maybe a better 4k video cam and options. And a much needed more pratical on screen finger print scanner. I do miss the pen as well.

An on screen fingerprint scanner would be great. S-pen too if you use it. But a 4k screen is a bad idea. Would destroy battery life with no benefits as the human eye can't see the difference on a screen this small.
As for the camera, do you really use 4k video recording that much?
Don't get too caught up in specs and features that you might never use or notice.

I would like to do more than 10 mins worth of 4k recording. I record a lot of car related stuff with my phone.
Good point on the battery life. But im sure there will be options so the screen wont be a battery hog. Just like the S8 +. Battery life is amazing. But if you bump up the brightness and resolution settings the battery goes pretty fast.
Yeah im not going of specs. Just real world stuff i would use it for. Which is why I have such an issue with the weird aspect ratio.
Every time a phone comes out they say you cant visually tell the difference on a screen this small. Yet magically everyone claims it to be be the best screen by far. And to be fair i do notice that the S8+ screen is better than my Note.
4K display would be good for VR, but anything else it is just wasting energy on resolution so small you can't even tell the difference. I had the same dilemma on waiting for the Note 8 or getting the S8+ (loved my Note 7), but I am fine with the S8+ at this point. Doesn't mean I won't be selling it and getting the Note 8 when it comes out, I might, but for now the S8+ is the best phone made. I agree the odd aspect ratio will take some time for app devs to work with, but it will not be much of an issue in a few months most likely.

feels like lcd panel

So ,I was looking for black crash issue in my phone and I come across video.
I found something odd .
While watching the blacks weren't true at some point , it was like watching on a LCD panel .
/Try at petals and jellyfish scenes/
Brightness level
1-8 %looks kinda whitish
9-13 %true black
14-24% definitely blacks looks like watching on a lcd panel.
>24 %again true black .
I was streaming the video at 2k 60fps. I tried changing the screen calibration but same result.
I dont know much about amoled panel can someone please help me out regarding the issue .if it's only on my device I'll put it up for a replacement
Ps-sorry for my english .

I got my OnePlus 8 Pro and tested it at low brightness in night. I was able to see a black bar on top after checking it closely.
Also enabling dc dimming creates a reddish accent. So i turned it off and its normal.
Although i am curious if the black bar going to cause major issues after sometime.
Also in India they only offering replacement and no Option for return
Below are screenshots that i took for 0:56 timeframe for your suggested Video. Is there any problem with my screen ?

I can't say anything about your device by lookin on my own screen .you have to figure that out for yourself, try to slide the brightness bar from lowest to high .you should be able to shift in black region around brightness level 14-24. (Try this on the YouTube app at the jellyfish scene ) .and please do let me know if you see shift in black .you can try on 480 p also don't have to go through vpn 2k reso.
Mine does this also on YouTube.
Turn off Pro colour effect fix the problem.
Turns out this is already a discussed matter(Reddit). So, the conclusion was that "live with it". Since the one plus company didn't polish it enough before mass manufacturing this things will coexist at lower brightness.
