Xperia Z3+ & Z2 Lowlight Photo & Display Comparison
Just did a quick comparison between Z3+ & Z2 camera (lowlight pictures for now due to bad weather!). Sony did improve the processing in auto mode especially auto white balance. On Z2, auto white balance is always a bit yellowish. I also included shots from Sony RX100M2 & Xperia ZL
And the phone didn't overheat yet with my regular usage! I'll be playing some heavy games this weekend and will update if things heat up!
Photo Bucket Link

Here is the display comparison with default white balance setting on both. Z3+ has a (much) brighter display and I'll add an outdoor picture later on. It's colder too but it can be tweaked by playing with the white balance settings.

Great comparison brother.specially the screen as i have a z2 and considering Z4

No problem. I just realized that I forgot to turn off 'Bravia Engine' on Z3+ . That thing got reincarnated in a new form called 'x-reality'. I'll try to post another set of pictures later on with that thing off on z3+.

Hey bro you think you can do some low light tests and some camera tests?
and Do you get all the manual settings and all?

Sure, I'll post more low light samples, hopefully by next Wednesday. I'm on a trip now and carrying the z3+ only.
Manual settings are there, didn't change much though. Not sure if that's what you asked...

Well what I meant was to use this app if you already have it.
As you can see this video

Hey, would you mind answering a couple of questions with regards to this phone?I am thinking to upgrade from my Z1, currently using my brother's Z3.
How much RAM is available in average? Z3 has 1.5GB, but I've seen a report that Z3+ has around 860-900MB, which is quite a downgrade.
Another question is, how do speakers perform compared to other devices you own?
And the last one, does the device really heat up during extended use of camera or media exaggerates?
Thanks a lot for taking your time!

I get like 1.6GB - 1.1GB memory available (screenshots below) - depends on the number of running apps though. Just close the apps when you're done. They actually close pretty easily (from the multitasking view/button) unlike the previous android builds where they used to disappear from the list, but kept running in background.
Speakers are very good, maybe a bit better than Z2. I need to check on that when I get back home. Since you are using a Z3, you might find those a bit muffled though as Z3 speakers are more exposed. I'm not sure as I don't have a Z3.
I did a 4K video test (indoor). The camera app closed after 6.5 minutes. With heavy usage, it does get warm. So does my Z2. Z3+ probably gets warm a bit earlier than Z2 . There's certainly some exaggeration as it doesn't 'overheat'. Nothing exploded after 40 minutes of gaming It certainly got pretty warm, but that's expected. I personally don't think it's a big deal.
Btw, since you have a Z3, did you notice any image file size increase compared to Z1 in superior auto? I see around 300KB more on Z3+ compared to Z2.

nice, i think sony may have done well with the update for Z3+/4, judging from the video below, the Z3+/4 lasted for 11~12 mins on 4k video recording.
theres no guarantee that the Z3+ in the video is using the latest update from sony.

Z1's size is 2.27 MB, while Z3's is 1.41 MB, but I assume it also depends on a lot of other conditions, such as lighting and stuff.

Nope, Haven't used the app since My Z2 doesn't support, I thought it would work fine since the video showed everything should work.
Too bad the app crashed, I hope you're up to date bro. Anyways Waiting to see more photos from you

Singapore sets will come with the Sony Digital Noise Cancelling Headset (MDR-DNC31) and the Sony Quick Charger UCH10. Those who pre-order will also get the DK52 charging dock.

a camera update isnt going to make the camera better than the lumia 1020. the problem with the engadget review is they compare it only to the 1020. 42 mp sensor vs 21 not really a fair comparison. No amount of software updates are gonna make them even.
Never the less i turned off x reality and have seen an improvement in battery life. Gotta thank this review for that

Software updates can address the Xperia Z1's current issues (noise, etc) and I never expected its camera to be on par or even exceed Illumina's 1020...

then you dont understand camera sensors and I would suggest you read more on what makes a camera good. Lumia 1020 has a better sensor and no matter how good the xperia z1 may be, it cant reach lumia 1020 level. If it by some miracle does, that means nokia should update their lumia software and it would beat the z1 again.

.. did you even bother to read the post you were responding to?
Anyways, considering the Z1 didn't ship with its final camera firmware it's been doing pretty well for itself so far. Very excited to see what improvements will come when the proper software is released.

If you actually read my post then you would know I accept that the Z1 can not match the 1020. Take the time to read instead of jumping to conclusions before you get to the end of the sentence.
And as far as my sensor understanding goes there are two types, CCD and CMOS. The Exmor happens to be a CMOS, CCD normally has less noise with CMOS having more noise, I also think that CMOS is MUCH more power efficient, CCD also captures more light. It's not much but its more than what the average consumer knows.
Anyway you got that from my initial post? Did I even say the Xperia Z1 has a camera even rivaling the 1020? My post was a sentence and you didn't get to the end.
So I read the review (I've been thinking about buying this phone, as I need a camera, and a new phone), and I noticed that Engadget said:
To explore this, we had to switch back to manual mode and set resolution to 20.7MP again. It's worth noting that this kills a bunch of camera options, such as HDR, scene selection and digital image stabilization -- but it was the only way to push the Z1's sensor to its limits.

This made me sad. Does this mean that the phone won't take 20MP HDR photos?
Other than that, it seems to be a good phone.

Hey sorry just looking out from in the guy your debating with actually said he does not think that the z1 can keep up with the Nokia but hopes that a update can help with some noise issues and softness , not to beat the Nokia but to overall help with the IQ of the z1. Hope that helps. And software can help with image quality as in proper exposure and the right ISO and shutter speed settings when in auto. Its true that you can not help grain pattern because this is a sensor specific thing but the amount of grain or noise can be helped and the amount of processing e.g sharpening can also be helped with software.
Z1 has great specs they need to work on the software to help it shine.

I read through all the posts and no where did you state it would be better or even match the 1020 with a software update you just mentioned it needs a software update to get the best out of the Z1 camera.
I agree the camera should be way better than what it is and if it can produce a clean image with minimal noise AND fix that superior auto then that is all that matters imho.
There is a lot of potential in this phone and I hope Sony can really get the most out of it.
I think we can all agree that it isn't challenging the 1020 at the moment and isn't likely to do so. But yeah software updates to clear up the current issues should help a lot.

Xperia Z1 2nd Place in DxO Mark's Overall Mobile Camera Ranking

Apparently, DxO Mark just gave out a score to Xperia Z1 and amazingly, just sits at 2nd place behind the Pureview 808 in overall Mobile Camera Ranking! :victory:
And that's without the "firmware updates" that will supposedly improve the camera!
I can't post the link as I'm still within the new user limitation of posting outside links. But if you're curious to see it, just do a quick google search for DxOMark and Xperia Z1!
More details:
Actually, the stills for Z1 stands at 5th place, however the video was deemed to be outstanding and the best in the mobile cameras and just 2nd place in their database behind the GoPro Hero 3!
If you're wondering what happened to the 1020, they also have an article on it and while they deemed the stills to be amazing and 2nd only to the 808. However, video was said to be lacking.
What are your thoughts?

I guess the big sensor is the key here. Dxomark doesn't reflect the real life though. I'm not very happy with the z1 camera... far too noisy especially at 20mp. Still better than my older nexus 4 anyway.

Ah ok. That's good then. Shooting at 20MP especially in low-light results in (I'm not sure why) worse pictures than shooting at 8MP 4:3 .. in my tests, it resulted in darker images.
I also like to shoot at 8MP 4:3 to take advantage of the oversampling and leave the rest of the settings to Auto. One thing though is that I turn off the Stabilizer. I found that turning it on resulted in the camera choosing a much higher ISO than intended compared when leaving it off. This may be due to its detection of slight handshake movements and it tries to compensate by upping the ISO in favor of a faster shutter speed.

Yes shooting at 20mp is useless. Pics are so noisy... it's a shame. At 8mp the image quality is pretty good and yes, with the stabiliser on the iso is higher for that reason. But I prefer a bit more noise other than a blurred image.

Nice. What metering and focus are you using? Particularly for macro / night shots. I find that using Single Auto Focus setting doesn't keep the whole image in focus and just the middle part, but I find that the multi-auto focus setting doesn't do too well either particularly in macro shots. Currently, I shoot in landscape mode when shooting macro.
I'm using metering average (it seems to do a better job with white balance as well). About focus I always use touch focus... I like to choose what I want in focus...
I love th bokeh management of the lens.. look at this for example

What i find telling from that review is this graph.
Above 80 lux the S4 shots have more 'texture' than the Z1.
Contrary to what people might think the Z1 has the best noise reduction indoors.

Not much of a fan of them anymore, after I wrote to them to see if they would do the Xperia Z test again after Sony updating the firmware to fix the bad camera quality, they didn't even respond to me. On the flip side it is Sony's fault for shipping substandard equipment, get all the important things right first, especially the camera when they are making such a big deal about how amazing it is.
DxO finally got around to testing the G2. Overall G2 placed 6th. However in the photo section it ties with the Z1 in terms of score. A closer examination of the parameters tested shows the Z1 edges ahead slighlty.
Where the Z1 comes out ahead : Exposure & Contrast, Colour, Noise Reduction, Flash
Where the G2 comes out ahead : Autofocus, Texture, Artifacts
4 > 3 or Z1 ahead by a little.
What lets the G2 down is video, where its ranked 15th to the Z1's 2nd place.
If you consider phones alone, Z1 has the best video out there.
Now we have to wait for DxO to test the Note 3 to see whether it will affect the Z1's ranking.
Sorry to jump here like that, I don't even know all this stuff but after read what you guys saying is like the camera on Z1 was made for experienced people who know how to set up the device. This is a phone anyway and I like to go around and shooting everything but almost of the pictures are crap. That how shouldn't be with a camera on a phone with 20mpx.

The IMX214 is a very capable sensor, and 1+'s ISP (Qualcomm?) looks quality too. Of course much will depend on speed, reliability and low light, I'll be looking to find more shots.

I certainly hope that with real world conditions it can deliver quality like shown above.
The best part is the 2 sensors that i have noticed that perform beautifully are the IMX179 and IMX214. Obvious 214 will be even better for sure.. Really hope they launch the phone around the different parts of the world soon.

A good Sony IMX sensor with a proper lens and image signal processor can bring wonderful images, see iPhone 5S. Which is why I'm puzzled to this day how come Sony's own Xperia Z, Z1 and even some Z2 shots look so over-processed, showing some lens inconsistencies and some SW errors too. Both the Oppo Find 7 and the OnePlus One launch with the new IMX214, and I'm curious how will they fare compared to other Exmors, the Lumias and ISOCELL. So far it is promising.

I agree with you on the Sony Devices part. I have seen that actually. Sony likes to complicate stuff, i really don't know why. Where they can have a easy way to fi thing, they go the other way. Trust me they have 3-4 different apps for the camera. You tell me who in 2014 does that?! lol .. And I read an article, the ISOCELL vs the IMX179 comparison. (Here). The IMX was better
I really need to have a look at the Lumia's though, they have almost DSLR type quality..
The S5 camera is much, MUCH better than the Nexus 5 to be frank. But the IMX214 is a new generation Sony sensor.
aren't you guys a bit scared about the camera app?
i've tried few phones with cyanogen camera app and they were all a lot worst than the original rom camera app (samsung devices especially)
at least this time they are working on their hardware so i really hope it'll be a lot better

Remember that these pictures are taken directly from OP's press page—they might have been doctored/photoshopped. On the other hand, I'd be amazed if the camera actually was this good.

Depending on scene and light conditions, today's smartphones can take impressive photos, see some form my S5 review. As far as dynamic range and per pixel sharpness, 1+1 fits right in among the best of Android photography based on what I've seen so far.

The stock camera on z1 is really bad, it doesn't need to do testing because almost everyone know it. Can you flash the Chocolatetrain's mod cam V8 8MP on Z1 and compare it to Z3 again? Make sure your Z1 is on 4.4.4 because the camera focus on 4.4.2 is very bad.

Sorry, guys.
No comparison possible with reduced size photos. With reduced size, you cannot see fine details, you cannot even spot the Z3's non-focus areas at the picture's edges.
Please post photos in FULL resolution, only. Everything else is just a waste of time, making everything look great.

I did. Z3 performs quite well in low-light situations but FAILS with shots taken under bright sunlight. Especially plants, flowers or grass are rendered in a horrible way. Quality is like an 8 MP camera even in 20.7 MP mode, with unfocused areas at the picture's edges (left and right image borders).
Just try, watch the results in 1:1, FULL resolution at your monitor. :/

Thank you very much for providing these pictures !
Picture 1: Have a look at the playground down in the middle: Sharp contours, looks very good.
But then have a look at the trees on the right hand side of the picture, focus the leaves: All blurred, just a muddy green slurry. Especially visible if leaves are in front of another green background like above the tiny lawn with the street lamp on it.
So we've got real sharp objects AND totally blurred objects in the same picture. - Caused by Sony's inferior software.
Picture 2: Concentrate on the D-Link box, note the part just below the line "mydlink Camera Video Recorder".
Left hand side ("Home/Small Office"): Focused. Right hand side: Blurred. - Spoiled by Sony's inferior software.

The software without unlocking is faulty, too. See several reviews. But there is a fair chance they fix it with a software update. The sensor is great, the software is holding back the quality.

No, this problems are not caused by unlocking the bootloader. It's just Sony spoiling the camera by using a SUBZERO camera software. Maybe there's a deal as Sony sells camera modules to other manufacturers: "We'll buy your Sony cameras if you make sure that your own Smartphone's cameras are far inferior to ours."
We've got a capable sensor - but the Sony software castrates it down to 8 MP level. :/

The fact that automode makes it 8MP isn't that much the issue btw (for me at least), oversampling is a common technique to get the best MP image using all the pixels of a large sensor. The problem is that Sony's implementation is mediocre at best and you can not really count on it.
As this has been the case since the Z1 I'm very sceptical of them actually fixing it, but I do remember firmware updates for the Z1 for example which really improved fotos. It is frustrating though, the hardware is awesome but they don't get the most out of it because of the software.
Still, it's not as much crap as people here give it. I have shot many great fotos with the Z1 (although only owning the Z3 for a few days now I can not yet comment properly on its pictures) but the fact that it's advertised as the best camera phone ever sets the bar high and it can not (always) live up to that.

What do we really lose on the Z5P by unlocking the bootloader?

Has anyone confirmed what we will lose if we unlock the bootloaders on the Z5P? Seems like getting locked BL root on 5.1.1 is a very long shot and I think a lot of us would want to weigh the benefits of having root against the functionality of the phone being reduced.
So far I've heard:
- BionZ camera processing
- PS4 controller support
- X-Reality display mode
Anything else? Like payments or 4K support or anything?

I need to double check, but I'm 90% certain that PS4 remote play/controller support worked fine on an unlocked Z3, so I'm surprised it would fail on an unlocked Z5P.
I'm going to be unlocking mine soon so I'll know. To be honest, I have never really missed any of the DRM-protected stuff in the past when unlocking a Sony. Some people actually preferred when the NR algo was disabled in the camera because it's known to be overaggressive and destroys detail. (RAW would be optimal, which is why I've been working with Alin on the AOSP camera project - RAW does work in the new AOSP camera blobs but they have a bunch of other things that need work.)

What about Miracast (screen mirroring)? I lost it on my old "z" unlocking the BL.
Good to know that it seems that nothing much is lost then. Looking forward towards rooting and transferring my Z2 to my Z5P soon.

Is it even present to begin with? Google has really been pushing Google Cast as a replacement to Miracast. (as in - use a Chromecast...) I thought Miracast had been removed from stock Android in favor of Google Cast.
If it's present it might be a Sony addon. The Z was released before Miracast support was integrated into stock Android so it had a "nonstandard" implementation.

I have a Sony Bravia TV since 2 or 3 years and it uses NFC + Miracast for screen mirroring so I never tried Google cast.

No idea as I haven't really used the phone yet. Only thing I can say is that the sample image in the x-reality menu stays the same no matter which setting is chosen. It worked fine before unlocking.
Could you follow up with some sample pictures if u get a chance?
And some comments on the sound quality
Could you also tell about the camera picture quality? And the low light photos? If possible, please do post a few low light photos. Thanks

Same, i'm still using my Z2 since there are no way to root my Z5P without unlocking bootloader. Sucks that we have to wait months before there's a work-around. X-reality and Sound enhancement is really important since i watch all my movies on my Z5P especially 3D movies with VRTube using my VR headset the images are super gorgeous .

What you can expect is the NR algorithm gets disabled - not much else.
Some people, including myself, actually prefer when the NR algorithm is gone - it reduces noise but destroys detail. Ideally we'd have RAW support, but so far that's only in the experimental Sony AOSP blobs. (which reminds me, I need to go through the vignetting/distortion cal process on some pictures I took with my Z3...)

I personally would disagree that these are really important - these are gimmicks that mangle the image/sound. You have a truer representation of the actual content when these are OFF. Also, X-Reality only works with Sony's own player app so it's irrelevant to something like VRTube.
Remote play doesn't work anymore

Low light photos still suck compared to Sammy S6 and above/LG G4 and above.
I updated MM yesterday and took snaps today, before and after drmrestore. See attached.
Noise processing was definitely restored.
I want to unlock my bootloader too. But as far as i know i will loose my warranty. That's why i didn't unlock until now
