[Q] AT&T Early Upgrade - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I've been with AT&T since 2003 (Cingular/AT&T Orange) and I've never asked for any early upgrade or bill extension. I've always been on auto pay and never late with payments. My offical upgrade is May 7th 2013.
My fear is that the S4 will be out of stock with a 2 week ship time if I wait until May 7. And lets be honest.... I really want the S4 (coming from iphone 4)
I've read some accounts of people getting an early upgrade if they ask "nicely". My quesiton is, who would I ask? 611? AT&T brick store?
I would like to be able to take advantage of the Wal Mart deal, so should I go to walmart and ask for an early upgrade? What about Best Buy?
Thanks for the tips!

I'm hoping to get an early upgrade too, as my upgrade date is May 2nd. I plan on calling the stores in my area every day starting on the 26th to see if they got the phones in. Then I'll go to the store and ask very nicely...I've heard if it's only a week or two, they usually just do it.

Well darn. It looks like the Walmart price is 198 now

Hey bro I am one of those who got the early upgrade. I was officially available for an upgrade on May 9. I first chatted with an AT&T rep who advised me that if I dialed 611 and spoke with Customer Care they would be willing to give me an early upgrade. After I called and advised them about my conversation with the chat rep, they helped me out immediately. Also, they attempted to charge me $249.99 over the phone for the GS4. I reminded them that online the phone was $199.99. So the Customer Care rep spoke to a "supervisor" who "approved" me to have the phone at the website price. A $36 first month activation fee is still required but I can happily say my phone is "pending shipment"

My upgrade is in June. But I called today and they said I could upgrade as soon as the phone is not on pre-order but "in-stock" online. When do you think that will be?

Yeah, I just called 611 AND my local stores and I got a ton of different policies...
-611 says: You can order (not preorder) the phone TOMORROW (6/23) and they will honor the 30 day early upgrade and have it shipped out.
-Corporate AT&T store 1 says: No early upgrades at all. Ever.
-Corporate AT&T store 2 says: Early upgrades are fine as long as it's within the same month of your upgrade, so May 1st would be the earliest I could pick it up. Oh, and he gave me the line "It's not like this is an iPhone, it's just an Android."
So what the hell? Why are there three different policies when it comes to early upgrades?? I would expect it to be different between corporate vs resellers, but they should all keep to the same policy.

Wow! I guess your best bet is to call 611 tomorrow and order the phone. See when is the expected ship date, and please keep us posted!

Generally they will do an upgrade during the month that your upgrade is available. Best bet is to stop at an AT&T store but don't expect them to price match a lower price if they give you an early, early upgrade.

I got an early upgrade my self I wasn't post to upgraded until November 2013 I went int too the ATT Store they added additional year on my contract I was able to get pre order of the Samsung Galaxy S4 the rep was really nice to me in store.
I end up paying $450 Samsung Galaxy S4 1 year contract which was fine for me I was cool with it I only had my Samsung Galaxy Note 1 for only 1 year.

So I just tried calling 611 since the phone is officially released and I see it on the att website to order and they said that the early upgrade doesn't cover GS4 and that I was told incorrect information...
At this point, I'm throwing my arms in the air and saying "screw it". Why even have an "early upgrade" policy if it's inconsistent?

guys, I'm not due for an upgrade till Nov 2013, i called in and spoke very nicely to a lady at ATT, and she said she could give me the upgrade for 200$ as an early upgrade. the only thing is they can't send out s4's yet, as they're currently online or retail only, so i can call back on launch day and shell send out one, i note has been made to my account.
BUT!! I'm greedy, so i still went to an att store and asked if i can do the same thing, and the guy said they don't have the ability, i said the rep on the phone said i could, he checked my account notes, and said 'oh OK then', so i was able to get him to write down on the back of his business card that i can do an early upgrade in store on release day.
just sharing what i did to get Mine, if you guys wanna do it too

Did you go to an AT&T corp store? I called every corp store within 2 hour drive time and they all say "within the same month" or "not at all". I even had a 611 lady call the corp stores to tell them about the 30 day upgrade policy and tbe corp stores said that they wouldn't honor it.. even coming from 611.
Like I said, it would be nice, but I'll just wait until next Wednesday. The last 611 gentlemen KNEW that I was going to ask about the S4 and told me, as soon as I asked about the early upgrade policy that it doesn't count toward the S4. So it looks like they are adding "notes" to my account every time I call.

My upgrade is in July, wonder if i should get the upgrade or just wait for the Note 3 hmmm.

My upgrade wasn't due till July 3rd, I phoned 611 and spoke to the rep, who not only gave me my unlock for my S3, may reason for calling, I asked about an early upgrade, and she ok'd it, had to check with a supervisor I think as she put me on hold. Pre-ordered S4 $199 +tax, usual 2 year contract extension.
Been a customer since 06, and have never asked for early upgrade, bill extension, never paid bill late.
/shrug, be polite ask nicely and you maybe rewarded.

I have used an early upgrade in the past using 611. The "ONLY" thing though was that "I HAD TO PURCHASE" it from ATT over the phone while I was on the line with them. They WOULD NOT let me use the Line Upgrade from any other business so the price through them was $50 more than from Walmart in store.
So I have two lines available for upgrade as of May 2nd and May 5th. So this time I will wait for those dates to pass this time. Specially since I have seen other businesses off it for a cheaper rate again that ATTs price. Walmart has always been good for me on a few occasions during upgrading, and another time was Radio Shack had the lowest price. Either of those two above I did NOT have to re-do anything with my data plan (Grandfathered Unlimited Data plan) as they called ATT while I was in store anyways. I also have another line due for upgrade in the middle of July, so it will probably be saved for the Note 3.

its in stock online and not in preorder status anymore

I tried to order over the phone...they said I can't til April 30th...store says I can do early upgrade on may 1st since it'll be the same month...man att has gotten strict lately...between July 2012 and march 2013 I upgraded my one line like 4 times without issue and always got subsidized pricing...

Sprint corporate stores lying to existing customers - no evos for you

So I starting calling the corporate sprint stores in my area and I noticed they were all asking if I was an existing (EC) or new customer (NC) before telling me if evo's were available. Turns out they are lying about their evo stock to EC. They will sell you one only if you're a NC
So I called a store, and told them I was a tmobile customer.
"We have 5 in stock so if you come in the next 30 minutes you can get one" .
Then, I told them I wanted to buy the phone outright, full retail, no line activation
sprint rep told me they don't have phones in stock for me.
Immediately I called sprint customer service; they called the store. (10 min after original call). Store now says none are available, and there is a waitlist.
I'm not the only one.
http://androidandme.com/2010/06/car...unning-low-but-could-be-higher-than-we-think/
Try it yourself:
Around Sunnyvale, Ca
5 of 6 stores I called asked if i was an existing customer before answering if they had it in stock. 6 store said none.
2 of 2 stores, told me they had stock, then changed tune when they found out i was an existing customer.
I should have just gone to the store, waited for them to present the phone. then reveal I'm an existing customer. If they try to pull it back, then call sprint customer service.
Sprint may be trying to lure new customers to their network. More money on a new customer than an existing one. Shady but it may be true.
Lol this is so true. My wife and I were on vacation in Florida this week. We decide to go to a sprint store to see if any were available. They ask is this for an existing account or new account. I say new account. Mind you at least 5 people were in front of us asking for evos. Bottom line, when we said we were new customers the manager pulls out 2 evos for us and set up our account. Needless to say we got very strange looks at us and probably some middle fingers behind our backs as well. Feeling sorry for the existing customers.
Remember a corporate store does not get paid on the new or upgrade like a third party agent would. So I do not see the incentive outside of perhaps signing new customers. But then again I would hope they want to keep the old ones as well
Sorry to hear that you are having these issues.
A letter to Mr. Hesse would be good to report this [email protected] - don't expect a nice reply from him though It's automated. Email [email protected]
he will like it - no really he would.
No surprise really since they work off commission..

This happened to me.
I'm an existing Sprint customer. I entered into a 2 year contract in December and got an HTC Hero.
I visited a Sprint corporate store in Culver City, California on launch day at 10:00am. I took my lunch break early (hour lunch). I signed in with the person at the front kiosk and it took 45 minutes before a sales person seen me. I told him I had a Hero, am not eligible for an upgrade, and would like to purchase an Evo outright a full price, and have my account moved over to it. He said he couldn't do this and he could only sell the Evo to customers who were eligible for an upgrade or if I wanted to add a new line. I was pissed and was going to be late coming back from lunch, so I left.
On the way back t work I called Sprint customer service from my phone. I explained what happened and the customer service rep said the store should have been able to sale me the phone at full price as long as I had the phone activate in the store, which I was going to, because I was going to have my account moved over. The customer service rep said she'd call the store to find out what happened on my behalf. I asked her if she could have the store hold a phone for me because they'd probably be sold out by the time I got off of work. She said she couldn't do this because the phone was in high demand.
Later at work I got a voice mail from the customer service rep I talked to earlier. She called the Sprint corporate store that wouldn't sell me the phone and talked to the manager. The manager agreed to hold a phone for me until I got off work for the inconvience.
After work I visited the Sprint store. The manager directed me to the person earlier who wouldn't sell me the phone earlier. The first thing the sales rep told me when I sat down was that they were instructed not to sale the phones to existing customers unless they were eligible for an upgrade or adding a new line. I think it's the store managers instructing their employees to do this to make their numbers look better or something.
Glad I didn't buy off sprint. I got a hero back in December too but got my evo from ebay. $520 and came with an extra 2gig sd. And since it's a google IO evo it has a month for free with full data. Now I have two sweet android phones! :3
Somewhat related: Add the $292 (total) speeding/changing lanes without indicators/not keeping distance tickets I got trying to get to the post office before it closed. Good thing the radar got me doing 90 and not the 155 before I hit the breaks!

I'd say, all in all, you paid way too much for your phone (including your tickets) But at least you have two phones now. (sarcasm if you didn't get that)
And 155mph to get to the post office? Get real. If true, you're damn lucky you didn't kill someone. Idiot.
They aren't lying. Their telling you the truth, you just failed to ask more question. They only have stock for new lines... if someone wants it without adding a new line, they'll order it and have it sent to the store overnight. I had my company rep order it for me and I got it Monday, $502 shipped.

I HIGHLY concur with this statement... fool.
This is not new. T-Mobile was doing the exact same thing when the HTC HD2 ca me out...mainly due to the low supply.
T mobile was doing the same with the HD2
Reps in stores get more commission off building a brand new accounts and new activations. It's like this on all carriers.

nope. they are lying. if you read the thread its not sprints policy to separate stocks for existing and new customers. they rater get more commission buy refusing to sell to me rather than another customer. they refuse by telling me they have none when they do. Of course, sprint structures their commission in away as to encourage this behavor.
guess i got lucky
I was depositing a check at an ATM and saw a Sprint store a couple shops down so I decided to go in and see if they had any. After telling the girl behind the counter that I was an existing customer and wanted to buy it outright she told me they had a waiting list going but that they had received a shipment Wednesday that they had not checked yet. She took my number and said she'd call me after they sorted through it. I went across the shopping center to have lunch and when I was finished eating my phone rang. The Sprint rep had pulled one for me. I ended up getting my phone for nothing out of pocket. She suggested to add a 3rd line to get the phone at the new activation cost, waived the activation fee and billed the cost of the phone to my account which wont post until NEXT month. Sorry to hear about the troubles you guys are having...
I got one from the online store...ordered yesterday at around 10am and it's "out for delivery" from UPS right now. Just in case you haven't checked that out.

And you also got an extra phone bill every month for 2 years for a 3rd line.
EDIT:
While telling people only new/upgrade accounts can get the phone is shady and unethical, I have to admit I wouldn't mind being able to restrict it to that at my store. It sucks selling something and making 0 money off it when the next guy would put some $ in your pocket. But alas, I just sell them to whomever. (assuming I have any in stock lol)

radio shack
I have been going to radio shack here in NYC for sprint stuff. No lines, just walk in and grab an EVO. Everyone goes to the sprint stores, but honestly the radio shack guys on 12th and broadway are super nice. They held a pre for me last year and now hooked me up with the EVO on launch. I saw there were lines at the sprint stores, but no prob at the rat shack.

I was investigating where to get mine from on release day. I am a current customer not eligible for an upgrade. I was going to be buying outright. bestbuy wanted 599 for outright, radio shack wanted 499 outright and sprint wanted 450... I talked to someone at a commission based sprint store and he explained that they were not selling outright because the store made no money off of it. I was a little annoyed, but understood why... plus that store only ordered 15 evos. I then went to radio shack. they told me that they had a very large order and that they would be able to sell me one outright... The day of the release, I woke up at 6 in the morning and headed over to the radio shack that said they would sell it outright. When I got there, the sales rep that I had talked to before appologized to me and told me the regional owner of all my areas radio shacks had sent out an e-mail telling them not to sell outright.... I felt defeated.... I decided to just wait till later and get it when I could. I was driving around my home town around 3 p.m. and drove by the corporate sprint store and decided, why not. I went in, walked right up to a rep, no lines at all, and asked if they by chance had any evos left and that I wanted to buy it outright. he sat me down, walked into the back and walked out with an evo. he told me that after this one they only had 3 left. He explained to me that corporate stores don't make more or less on upgrades or outrights. To finish up this long story, I ended up getting it for 450 from the corporate store in my area. Not all of the stores were turning away outrights. Next time there is a new phone release, I am going back to that store. If any of you are in St. George, Utah, It is the only corporate store there...

Early upgrade for the EVO

I wasn't due for an upgrade for another month but the local Best Buy had some white and black ones in stock, so I called Sprint and they moved my date up a month so I could go ahead and upgrade. This was 21 months in on one line and 11 on the primary line for the upgrades. Just thought if you are due for an upgrade then it might be worth your time to call Sprint and see if they will move your upgrade date so you can get the EVO if you can find it.
You just got lucky that you had a cool rep to do do that for you. I tried and they wouldn't go for it when they first came out. I had to pay an early termination fee for my Touch Pro in order to get my EVO.
When in doubt Sprint will always let you upgrade at least one month early. One thing you can do is call, talk to a manager and tell them how badly your current handset blows and you wanna upgrade. Normally you'll get some grief at first but if you threaten to cancel service and tell them you'll get an iPhone than they submit to your wants.

I was behind for an upgrade when I got mine. I just told sprint my problems with the pre and was really liking the evo, and would be willing to sign another 2 years I'd they could renew my upgrade date. I got my pre like 14 months ago. It helps to tell them that you're trying to decide on the evo and a phone on another network, for me it was the droid.

If you are with Sprint enough time, you can upgrade every 11 months. not even 12.
And I don't think any other company does that.

I've been with Sprint since before it all became digital and the days of the brick phones so if that's not long enough, I don't know what is.
I wasn't due for an upgrade until Sept 1, went to best buy on June 20th and they said I was eligible.......
If you pay over like 120 or 130 a month for Sprint service than you are a premier member. One of the perks of this is upgrades every year vice 2 years. You're also supposed to get priority in store service and you get accessories for like 25% off. There's more, just go check it out on Sprint's site.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
you're lucky. i was 3 weeks early to renew my contract as a premier member, but they would not renew it since i was getting an evo. they wouldn't even sell it to me straight up. i even got into an argument with the manager because i was getting different stories about me upgrading and/or purchasing the phone for full price. they only wanted new lines for the evo.
I had a week to go for my upgrade, but Sprint would not budge. I contacted the retentions department and the rep said the only way they would move my upgrade date up is if I had the BB representative call customer service and tell them that my phone was broke and that I was looking into the evo. Essentially they could replace my current phone and I was only going to keep it for a week and get the evo or they could save some money and move my upgrade date up. The customer service rep didn't resist the move.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. I had to go through BB and open a new line on my account as a family plan. This is where Sprint falls short. Evidently in my area they don't practice what they preach. My Touch Pro broke a week before the launch of the EVO and I was even charged an early termination fee on a broken phone. This alone almost swayed me to go with Verizon but decided to give Sprint one more chance.
I was planning on adding a new line anyway when i was gonna get the evo. So when i went in telling the rep at the store i wanted just a case he asked why i wasnt getting the phone through them, to which i replied. i pre-ordered from best buy . 2 of them (one for me and one for my buddy). The rep asked how much i had put down i told him 50 bucks. he told me he would match that if i bought through them. I kinda hesitated, and told them i had pre ordered 2, to which he answered, we'll match that also. I went ahead and got them from the sprint store. thats not the best part, they gave me all sorts of discount (23% off my phone bill) and when i went to look at my phone bill the new line is already ELIGIBLE for an UPGRADE. and the old line i had (the Hero)is eligible in october, and they told me that i couldnt change main number or id lose the upgrade on the hero, but my evo is now my main line.. LOL i guess i win LOL. when the new phones come i dont have to wait or Early Terminate. HAHAHA

Sprint offering early upgrades to some customers

Itching for a new Sprint handset, but your upgrade date is still a ways off? You might be in luck, as a newly-leaked Sprint document has shown that the carrier is offering some customers an early upgrade. According to the doc sent to SprintFeed, there's a silent promotion running now through December 31st that'll allow some Premier customers to upgrade early to any CDMA handset in the Now Network's lineup, including the iPhone. The deal is said to be only available at corporate-owned stores, and before earning the upgrade you'll need to have your account reviewed by a sales representative for specific promo codes.
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, especially considering that Sprint Premier is going the way of the dinosaur and most of the benefits of program are ending once the year is up. If you'd like to see if you're eligible for an early upgrade, mosey on down to your local (corporate!) Sprint store and ask your friendly rep to look into the promo. Just don't forget to come back and let us know how it went when you're done, k?

I don't know why anyone would re-up their contract at this point. Wait until the LTE phones start coming out, and then re-up.

Exactly, no point in buying a phone now, then being stuck in a contract when LTE comes out

Unless they want to get you into a new phone now, then you'll have to pay more for the new phone that comes out next year that you should have waited for, but can't pass up. Sprint knows how your mind works.
Stop posting this people it is false rumor many people have tried today and no luck. Unless your due for an upgrade in the next two weeks

Not totally true. I went to the Sprint Store today. I have 3 lines on my plan. Two of them are due to upgrade in March. The 3rd line is due in October 2012. They offered me an upgrade on the Oct. phone because it is the primary line. Don't know if I will cash in, but the offer seems legit. I have been a customer for over 10 years. Maybe that is a reason.

Not true! I'm on a family plan with 4 other phones and I was able to upgrade my dad's phone today even though his upgrade isnt coming until next august. They gave us the early upgrade because we are premier members and he is the primary line. The sprint rep told me they just heard about the deal yesterday, and it does indeed go until the 31st.
I can confirm this is real. But the stores i called and went to are all asking for you to either upgrade your plan or buy accessories to do it.
Anyone else running into this?
It's pretty standard to renew your plan whenever you do an upgrade

No not renew but upgrade. curently have $129 and they wanted me to upgrade the plan to $149 plan.
Well got some crazy news!!!! i took advantage of the early upgrade and found a store that did not make me upgrade my plan or buy accessories. I think its a store by store discretion type deal with making customers buy accessories and upgrade plans. Also they bought 2 of my evo's for $100 each and all rebates were instant for the phones i got. Sooo i spent A little under $300 and got a 16g iphone 4s for my girl and got the epic touch for me. All and all a great deal and i'm very happy with my new phone
But i'm a little sad to be leaving the evo 4g section of XDA. Gonna take a break from rooting and enjoy stock for a min then be back flashing and learning the epic touch!! Good bye all my evo compadres

Those of you that had early upgrades...

How'd you do it? My cousin just upgraded to the S4 and now I'm desiring one. However I don't have an upgrade until July 1st. I called Sprint customer service and they said it's impossible to have my account pushed for an early upgrade. Is she full of it or am I SOL until July?
Please do tell me your stories.
Im not quite sure how you qualify for early upgrade possibly when your Sprint premier customer but ive always been eligible for a early upgrade

Well customer service implied I'd be capable when it becomes June. They mentioned it's more likely the closer it is.

My last upgrade I was a couple months early before my upgrade and I was able to get an early upgrade in store but I had to pay a fee of like 50-100 dollars extra.

Currently Sprint is offering an early upgrade program called upgrade now you just call and ask to upgrade now. Depending on your current eligibility it may cost anywhere from 50-100 dollars.

Actually if you are due in July 1st. You should be able to upgrade your phone now at the store. Sprint actually makes you eligible 2 months before your upgrade (If your 2 year contract ends in July). You could go here and check. I bet you will be happy to see that you are eligible. Otherwise it is $50 dollars and they make you turn in your current phone, which is NOT a deal.

I received a early upgrade and my due date wasn't until 1 July 2013. Cost is 100 bucks + S4 and your all set.

This is exactly what I found out today. They quoted me $100 to push my upgrade from July 1st to now. I'd rather wait a month and get it to save $100. If Sprints Variant wasn't the most expensive of them all, it'd make my choice easier. Not to mention activation fees that's a total hit or miss on having it waived.
Depending on how long you've been with them...you could always go the spoiled brat way and say you'll cancel if they don't let you upgrade early. As long as you've been a good ontime paying customer, they will do it 9 times out of 10. That's what I did, and I wasn't eligible until November 2013. (I have had 4 devices with sprint for 6 years though).
Goto wirefly, they have the Sprint S4 for 219. You will save a few bucks to help with the 100 dollar charge.

Been with Sprint since 1999. Very disappointed when they took away my annual upgrades. But u feel like people play that "loyal customer" card far too often for it to work for me. I doubt calling retention will work because I have 4 lines and the rest are upwards towards 12+ months remaining on the contract so they'd make more money on an etf from me.

AT&T says my Note7 is worth nothing in exchange. Is this right?

I was waiting until the S8 came out to trade in my Note7. So, I went to an AT&T store today to preorder. They told me the deadline (Dec. 31, 2016) for exchanging the Note7 had passed, and that I wouldn't get any credit toward the S8. They did let me restart my Next plan, but I'm back at month 0 and the money I paid in for the Note7 is gone.
Is this correct? I don't see anything on the AT&T website about a deadline. Was there a notification about it as part of the software updates (which I had blocked)?
And would this mean, for someone who had bought the phone outright rather than on the Next plan, that AT&T would give them nothing when they brought the Note7 back? There is certainly no incentive to return it in that situation, assuming they want the remaining devices back.
Actually, it gets somewhat worse. The store ordered the wrong phone for me (S8 instead of S8 Plus) and there is a charge on my bill for $613.77 that shouldn't be there. I called the store and they said to call customer service. I called customer service and they said to go back to the store.
Hey bro, I just returned my note 7 (and the case) last Thursday for a FULL REFUND. They dropped $294.64 in my account. My at&t next was void and then I could start a new one.
You made the mistake by asking what your phone was worth. You must say I want a full refund for my note 7 and all the accessories. I kept hearing this December 31st date but it's nothing official. What they mean to say is after the last update (around December 31st) you will not be able to charge your phone. But we blocked those updates.
I then went to best buy mobile where they have the best offer for the s8 plus. You get $100 off... Yes $100 off PLUS all the Samsung promotions (gear vr and controller)
Hope you can go back and speak to the manager.
Keep me posted...

That's interesting. Thanks for the info.
The manager at the store said there was a December 31 deadline. I sat there and looked through the AT&T website, and told him there was no deadline listed there. He said, "Well, it says that in our info."
I also went through the online chat when I got home. They said I couldn't get any credit for the installments already paid.
After going back to the store today, I did at least get them to remove the $613.77 charge they had put on my account (which they acknowledged was an error, charging me to pay off the Next plan on the Note7).
It's great you got them to give you a refund. Maybe I'll take another crack at calling customer service after I actually give them the phone back.

Dude, I would be threatening them with a call to the Consumer Protection Agency.
I didn't receive anything that says I had to turn my Note in by Dec 31, have them show you where they sent that message to you.
AT&T Store Return
I was a victim of Samsung's mandatory update last week, while still waiting to (hopefully) exchange it for a S8+. I had originally bought mine full price at Best Buy, then activated it at an AT&T store, exchanged for the 'safe' version etc.
The update disabled the USB-C port and charging, so I was forced to take it in. With a promotion on the S7 Edge I also received a Gear S2 watch, a Galaxy TabE, (both 99 cents without requiring a new contract; just 10$/Month device fee) And was able to use 99$ out of my 200$ + credit on a Gear VR.
I was sad to finally let go of my Note7 after so much resistance, but suffice it to say I walked out pleasantly surprised at the extras I received.

I was told that myself at an AT&T store when I inquired about it in mid-December, even knowing both AT&T & Samsung's website said differently. However I know a lot of those guys are working on hearsay or don't bother to look it up, so I'm the type to just drive to the next AT&T store and try again. There never was and still isn't an end date to the recall according to the ATT website, which is exactly what they refer to. Even regardless of the N7's condition.
EDIT: Can't post URL's yet but it's ATT website article KM1122948

I looked at that article, never saw anything about a Turn in date deadline
I remember seeing a sign at my ATT store which is an authorized dealer that said to get refund you had to turn in by DEC 31. So maybe it deals with third party stores that are not corporate stores? I have heard people say DEC 31 was the deadline but never found nothing official on that. Still no matter what they should take the phone and give a refund as its an official recall and they can't make you eat the money lost. Maybe you need to go through Samsung now to get a refund? Who knows as companies loves to do the run around game

They should have provided a Loaner until the replacement was available, like they originally said they would and like they did in some markets.
The only replacement for a Note is a New Note...
Well I am hoping when the new note 8 comes out Sammy doesn't forget about us note 7 owners and how we was done wrong. But I'm sure they will. Heck I would take a fixed note 7 but they are not to be sent to the US market from what I read.

I'm picking up my S8+ on Friday, at which point I'll drop off my Note7 at the AT&T store.
My plan is to wait a few days then contact AT&T, saying "Now that you have my phone back, when do I get a refund for the money I paid in installments and sales tax?" My hope is that this gets automatically refunded once they physically get the phone, despite what the store manager said about a December 31 deadline.

Why don't you just hand them the Note 7, get refund, buy S8+, or it should be swap?
That's essentially what I'm doing. But the manager said no refund after December 31. Actually, they initially charged me $600 in remaining payments, but I got that reversed (they admitted the charge was an error).

Note 7
Can anyone who has had success exchanging their phone tell me their store location? Seems random but I am at the point with att I want to leave. I am trying to return my note 7 and the stores keep telling me no. The call center is telling me they have to but every location I go to its the same crap. Both corporate and other have the same stuff about dec31st..... doesn't make any sense to me but maybe if I can prove locations are in fact honoring the exchange I might have some luck.
At this point it seems like more a choice than corporate policy and all the hoops I've jumped through just this week I am at my breaking point.
I returned my note 7 for a full refund two weeks ago at the highway 151 store in San Antonio. They also gave me a refund for my case that I purchasedI'm picking up my s8 plus on Friday. Got a $100 off coupon for purchasing the phone at best buy mobile.
They refunded all my money on my debit card. They told me I couldn't get cash because they didn't have enough money in the store to give cash. They told me they could put it on any debit card of my choice.

S8 refund
I was also given the same story about no refund being issued after Dec 31 but I refuse to take that as an answer. I called customer service at least 6 times and was placed on hold many of times, everyone kept telling me the same story and I just kept asking to speak to a manager and kept climbing up the chain. I mentioned taking legal action and they said a manager would call me back within 72 hours and he never did. I called the 7th time and the operator issued me the refund on everything i had paid except the tax (she said i had to try to claim that at the store where the phone was purchased. Will return once I get my phone today in the mail.
Good luck and don't let them take your money!!!
I took my Note7 back to the AT&T store today, having received my S8+ yesterday. After an hour there (most of it while they were on the phone with customer service), they said they couldn't take it back at the store, but they printed out a shipping label for me to return it.
At this point, I'm debating whether to mail it to AT&T and try to get my past payments refunded, or just keep the thing--maybe use it as a music player or something.
