Why a new forum? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Why was it decided that AT&T SG3 needs a new forum? Since models of all US carriers are the same variant, wouldn't it make sense to have a "US GS3" and a "Intl. GS3" forum instead of one for each carrier?

It's true that U.S. variants are mostly the same, but the sub-forums that'll be created later (Q&A, Development, General, etc...) will sometimes be carrier specific. Such as people asking about availability, AT&T bloatware VS Sprint bloatware, or about AT&T 3G/LTE VS Verizon's CDMA/LTE, etc.
EDIT: Hah... and the subforums were created JUST as I posted my reply.

No, they're the same.. just different radios

Why create this thread? I really enjoy having our own forum. No need to weed through crap that doesn't pertain to my device.

Lol every Galaxy get his own Forum why no Sub Forum?
For the Galaxy S2 there is also a 9100G Sub Forum.
But for the HTC One S C2 there is no Sub Forum or all Xperia U/P/Sola Threads
are in the Xperia S Forum. No Sub Forums

ya i think its a good idea for that reason...enough people have each galaxy to fill their own forum, and since the radios are different and will need a diff rom for each it will help un**** the development forums a ton

Bottom line us each variant will have very different roms and kernels....so easier not to confuse people and cause a bricking outbreak by grouping them together.

The AT&T SGS III has a SIM card slot, but some of the other US variants do not have it.
EDIT: The Sprint variant does not have a SIM slot... At least as shown in the video linked below.... FF video to 2:25

Forum should be renamed to the Galaxy S III SGH-i747 forum, as Telus/Bell/Rogers in Canada are using the exact same model

Correction the sprint version does have a SIM slot with built in microsim, its just not accessible its built in underneath the phone's back housing. The reason for the SIM is because Sprint's version support their coming LTE network.

Are you being "specific" to the Sprint SGS III?... If not, elaborate... I own a network unlocked AT&T Captivate and when I travel I'm able to insert a pre-paid SIM from other GSM providers and make phone calls. You're saying that this can't not be done with the AT&T SGS III once it is network unlocked? No other network SIM will work?

How compatible is the atrix with T-Mobile?

Sorry if this has been answered but I'm on the xda app and can't search. I'm thinking about getting this phone and unlocking it to work on T-Mobiles network. How cross compatible is it? Will it work with the T-Mobile "4G"?

Nope, you will only get 2G (EDGE).
t-mobile and at&t use different 3G frequencies, so if you unlock it you will only get EDGE speeds. Not worthy IMO, you have lots of options in your country, i would recommend to wait for the samsung galaxy s II phone.
Will work on the network but data will be at Edge speeds, not 4G.

On the new Nexus S - if you run out of internal storage - what size memory card can you add? Oh, wait they left off the SD card slot on that model. But those super AMOLED screens are really easy on the battery right? Oh wait, if the screen is black they use less juice but not otherwise.
Sorry, had to pick on you. Suffered with the captivate for 8 months..... yeah i drank the Koolaid - now i know better - but samsung sure can spin it.

That code process is to unlock the phone to enable it to be used with networks other than AT&T. But that doesn't get you data speed any faster than 2G/Edge using an Atrix on T-Mobile's network.
I'm a little confused here. You guys are saying that the Atrix will only get 2G/EDGE speeds on TMobile because the frequencies are different.
I am currently using the Nexus One.. how is it that I'm getting 3G speeds with a phone that is compatible with both AT&T and TMobile then??
Doesnt this mean that the Atrix should be able to get 3G speeds as long as it has the appropriate software? or am I not understanding something..
There are 2 kinds of nexus ones.. one with AWS bands (tmobile) and one with the regular 850/1900 (ATT). That's why you see them work on both tmobile and att. But a single device won't work on both bands.
It is a hardware issue. No software flashing will be able to fix it. If you bought the wrong one then you're stuck with it.

False. There's not a chance in the world that is true. T-Mo USA and AT&T use mutually exclusive bands. No carrier-branded phones carry both bands. The only modern phone that carries bands necessary for 3/4G on either network would be the upcoming, not-for-sale/developer-only Nokia N950.

The Nokia N8 and E7 also have the 3G frequencies necessary for both At&t and T-mobile, as well as Europe/Asia (850/900/1700/1900/2100). However, I agree with you that no At&t/T-mobile branded device carries all the needed bands.

Ah, I see. I didnt realize that there are 2 types of the Nexus One.
I had assumed that since they are not branded by any carriers that they were all the same device.
Thanks
I was really hoping to have my TZones internet plan, which runs at 3G speeds on the Nexus, run on an unlocked Atrix but that doesn't look possible.
Are there any phones newer than the Nexus One that will work with Tmobile 3G and are unbranded by Tmobile?
The branded Tmo android phones lock out my Tzones.

Here's a list of phones that will work with tmobile 3G. Take your pick. You may have to source it from somewhere else if you wish to buy it unlocked and unbranded.
The Nexus S is unlocked and unbranded even if you get it from tmobile. But since you are coming from the Nexus One, it is up to you if its worth the upgrade. Other than the Nexus S, have a look at dual core phones.

Atrix on t-mobile
i am currently running atrix 4g on system version 4.5.141 and android version 2.3.6.. I am rooted and have and unlocked boot loader. I also got the unlock code for my phone and it was successful and i am now running T-mobile sim chip i am only getting the Edge .. I have a thought as if you could change the phone frequency settings with sqlite editor i mean if you can disable the entitlement_check to enable theathering with AT&T's 2gb plan then we should be able to figure out how to change the frequency ratings of the phone to be able to run on t-mobiles 4g ... I wish that someone with a little more Knowledge could help out with this..

This maybe early but I know it was done for AT&T Note 2, where the radio was enabled for use on T-mobile.
Does it seem likely for Samsung S4?

Once the bootloader is unlocked...most likely. This has been the case for the T-mobile/AT&T variants that have had the same hardware (Note 2, Skyrocket, SGS3).
Depending on where you are you can catch 4g. In tampa florida I get 4g in some area with the tmobile/att shared band

You will probably have to wait until a dev makes a zip. Here is a link to the thread on how to do it for the Note 2. THIS WILL NOT work for your S4, but I'm sure something similar will come along.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
Are T-Mobile bands supported at the hardware level on the AT&T model? I guess my question is, will flashing a T-Mobile radio on an AT&T GS4 allow it to use all of T-Mobile's LTE bands, or just the two bands that are shared between the two? If the two phones are really the same at the hardware level it would mean the same frequencies are supported and just that some are disabled in the modem firmware of the AT&T version.
Search is not working and I couldn't see any posts answering this question directly.
Not sure. I unlocked my phone early this morning to try it out and can't get more than EDGE with my T-Mobile sim

For anyone who may be interested in this, it seems both the AT&T and the T-Mobile Galaxy S4 have in fact the exact same hardware board. This can be seen in minute 48:00 of the AT&T SGS4 teardown video by Adam Outler. More information on this on this thread.
It seems there is hope for enabling all the bands of the T-Mobile version on this device after all.

Sprint version can be used on GSM networks?

I know how everyone is quick to shoot down people for double posting, but I've tried to search and perhaps my keywords are off but my question is:
Can the Sprint version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 be used on GSM networks?
I'm pretty sure I remember that Note2 and SG3 had no sim slots...but this one does.
Please don't tell me that it's for the LTE data (like in the Metro PCS version of the SG3), it would be hard for me to swallow that because they barely even have 4g in metro areas as it is.
Not sure how you missed this topic, it's been discussed many times. Do a search for sim lock in this forum.

Don't quote me on this cause I may be absolutely wrong, I have read all the threads in my spare time but this topic doesn't apply to me so I may have misread.
From what I gather, the Sim is for LTE, but you can use it on international GSM networks outside of the USA.
But I read something about being able to get Sprint to unlock it for you after you've been a customer for a certain amount of time or something like that. I don't know if this is true or not tho.
From what I have read though the general consensus is that the first statement is true at least.

Is the Sprint LTE network even live? LOL...I swear I haven't seen it active anywhere near my area.
But, if indeed it is a Sim Slot for LTE AND International GSM, I can't see how it would just be for International.
From what I've heard, I could be wrong because of bad info, that all the S4s have cdma/gsm chips and is basically a world phone.
I still have a hard time swallowing the fact that MetroPCS SG3's sim slot is really only for LTE...so like, Samsung made that phone ESPECIALLY for the small carrier? Doesn't compute. Maybe on the software end.
So, that's why I'm believing that Sprint's S4 can be tapped for GSM usage, not just for International but for the US...I don't see how if it is unlocked, that it could differentiate between a U.S. sim chip and foreign one.

they made the SCH-R530, it was used on 3 carriers. we tried everything under the sun and it would not work with any form of sim. and i dont see why the continued attack on metropcs? they are doing a reverse merger with tmobile, as in metropcs is shouldering tmobile (you know the 4th largest carrier?)

Very simple, Sprint has the OEM disable the device such that it won't accept any SIMs from any other US carriers and/or program the radio such that it ignores any GSM signal tied to American carriers. This is absolutely nothing new though... Sprint has done this on every Adroid or iOS GSM-capable device they've sold in the past three or four years (HTC TP2, Moto Photon 4G, iPhone...).

Question about bands

Just a little curious, since I've never done much carrier hopping.
Say I buy this phone from T-mobile, would it work on Verizon? My vz phone uses a micro sim as well, but I know there are different bands the carriers run off, and gsm vs cdma and such. But some phones work on both types, correct? Is this one of them? I really don't like the look of the verizon version...
