Flimsy Case - Galaxy S III General

So, I've been planning my upgrade for a few months and originally had plumped for the lovely HTC One X despite its sealed case and no Micro SD card option (with a 32GB card in the Dell Streak it made sense to have a phone I could use it with). Then a thought stuck me, the S3 would be due for launch soon, so I set about hunting it down, holding off my upgrade.
It took a while and once launched, my heart sank. The reviews commenting on the flexing, poor case quality. So after launch, I went shop hunting to beast the machine, after all, my partners S2 is fantastic, how could Samsung make such a basic mistake? Well let me clarify:
Compared to my Dell Streaks metal battery cover, yes it is a little flimsy feeling. its not as rigid as the S2 either, it has a more... natural feel. Which is precisely what Samsung were aiming for. It feels warm and welcoming to the hand, not cheap. So if you were worried about the quality of the case, don't worry. Dont expect a solid steel brick, expect something that feels like it shape shifts to your grip but this is not noticable unless you pay attention to it and you will love it.

Good news and bad news
Good news: Just been into Carphone Warehouse. And discovered Talk Mobile do a tariff. 12 month, £30/month, 400 mins, texts and Unlimited data with no fair usage limit. Handset £179. That in my eyes is a cracking deal.
Bad news: Handset looks nice, but has the ergonomics of a shoe box. Does not feel nice in the hand at all. Compared to my HD2. I maybe use to how my fone feels, but the edges just felt too square.
Also i tested both phones on moneysavingexpert.com homepage. The colours were perfect on the SG2. HD2 colours looked washed out. But I was testing clarity of the small letters. Both were identical. Iphone 4 is the yardstick for this and it fails.
So im passing on this and waiting for the HTC Sensation. The look and feel is paramount, u cant touch memory, so shouldnt miss it too much.
SG2= ergonomic fail.
I want to view pages without having to zoom all the time and read pdfs. Nice phone but no cigar, this time
Sorry.

to each its own. I couldnt stand my hd2 after having my galaxy s for a year. But it comes down to persoal preference. Im pretty sure theres some happy people enjoying there devices.
I agree. Nothing wrong with the phone, I just have a specific requirement to be able to use service manual pdf's on the move so i dont have to dig out the laptop.
Dont wanna troll. Just thought people who havent handled one yet maybe interested.

Having just upgraded from a HD2 yesterday I don't agree at all - the Galaxy S II feels a lot nicer in the hand. However, thanks to it's plastic construction, there is no doubt it feels less sturdy than HTC's offering. I get the impression that, despite the Gorilla Glass, one drop of this thing onto a hard surface would lead to a world of hurt. I'm not saying that is definitely the case but it feels that way.
I have a FlexiShield skin on order and I will feel a lot more comfortable once my phone is in it. I bought one for my HD2 18 months ago when I first got it and it saved it from at least a couple of drops. Superb cover.
On a side note, is anyone going to bother with a screen protector? I have never had a Gorilla Glass phone before so don't know the likelihood of it scratching. I much prefer touch-screen phones with no protector but for obvious reasons it's not a good idea.
lots of people aren't bothering with ascreen protector. they bring a good point that... anything that can scratch the gorilla glass will probably pass through any screen protector anyway. having said that... i'm getting one. i have one for my GS as well.
as for the GS II i just may not put it on yet
I like the shape of the sgs 2, very thin and light makes it ideal shape.
Yeah, we really needed to know this. Nobody is forcing you to buy anyone phone so if you don't like this one there is no need to run home, jump on the interwebz and make a thread on the forum about it.
I hope you like which ever phone you do get.

Dropped my SGS multiple times on hard flooring, concrete and Asphalt and despite thinking one drop and it was a goner the thing doesn't have a scratch on the screen, body still looks new and works perfectly. I wonder if the SGS II is the same way but I will not be dropping it anytime soon to find out.
I love my Galaxy SII but it seems that you might be better off with a 7in tablet such as the Galaxy Tab or maybe a bigger tablet such as the Advent Vega or iPad.
I personally couldn't read PDFs on a screen smaller than 7in for very long.
This is good info for me. Nexus One owner and I sported an HD2 for a few weeks and loved the feel and size, knowing it had the dimensions of my next phone (G2x was a failure for me).

Small hands...........
Small gloves...
yeh I know what your on about I went from iPhone 4 to gs2 and text is so hard to read with no reflow option, but I gain so much more with customization, and the weight is great, the iPhone feels like such a brick now.
in saying that I had a hd2 and really missed it after I got the iPhone, thought I could get that feeling back with the sgs2 but it's not the same hd2 is a quality product.
enjoy your sensation and thanks for being honest in the lions den lol
i do agree with the [OP] regarding the "ergonomic fail" thing.
..and this is coming from a Samsung phone fanatic like me
personally, i don't like at all the shell design of the SGS2, i'll definitely not use the SGS2 naked, it looks simply disgusting... seriously, for the lack of a better word to describe its design.
unfortunately i love all the technology packed inside that "disgusting" shell so is either take it or leave it, and i choose to take it
so the ergonomic fail became a non issue for me, as i'll be replacing the case, and using with a protection case, and other accessories i always slap onto all of my phones; i praise the after market accessories people to make the impossible possible

Disgusting? Seriously? Dear me, it takes all sorts I guess and the world would be a boring place if we all had the same opinions.
IMO: I like very much the design, I can hold it in one hand and even type with one hand, it holds perfectly in my right hand... Even ergonomically I like it. It's simply perfect for me.
It's up to you to choose another phone. I would never choose another now. Especially HTC sensation which have many things less than Galaxy S2.
+10 I find the design very nice unlike some here
And I would never change it for nothing on the market that's just a piece of beauty, a very thin piece actually
What I don't understand is the point of this topic ? If you feel it not as you want anyone else could feel it in the hand differently like me. And many peeps have already said they like the feel in the hand in this thread so your opinion can't be taken for facts until someone interested in it hold it for real :/ anyway...
Pitching in on the ergonomics of the device being awesome, for me anyway. If you have really small hands then this will probably be a pretty bad phone for you, since it wont fit comfortably into a normal grip. That aside, for people with average or large hands, this design works very well. You can keep a very firm grip on it easily, and one handed operation works too, all while having a 4.3" screen.
Not sure about the people saying it feels cheap or anything, unless you correlate cheap with light - because it's very light. If this is the case, you can buy a nice big heavy cover for the device to make it feel heavier and sturdier - but that seems really stupid to me. A phone is meant to be mobile, the lighter the better.
Phones won't be perfect until they're razor thin, bendable, and weight as much as paper! And the SGS2 is firmly on the right track.
To me I'm loving everything about the phone, ergonomics included. I don't have huge hands but find the phone very easy to hold and use for one handed operation.
As for a screen protector I will say a big NO. I work for a Verizon retailer and we have a demo line hooked up to their version of the first galaxy s, the fascinate, that also has gorilla glass. Being inquisitive and it being a demo line, I decided to test the durability of gorilla glass. Grabbed a phillips head screw driver and preceded to try and scratch the screen. Repeatedly I scraped it, scratched back and forth quickly, and somewhat violently tried to stab it. Wiped off the screen with a micro-fiber cloth and not one scratch or mark on it, gorilla glass is really some remarkable stuff.
I'm not saying its impossible to damage it, but it will take some serious effort. Since most of you guys probably take care of your phones anyway, with gorilla glass your screen will be fine. A screen protector on gorilla glass just seems redundant .
Problem is... the old galaxy didn't have an oleophobic coating. You try taking a screwdriver to that and the coating WILL come off. The screen will be resilient, but not the coating, sorry.

The HD2 is such a class act to follow, it's replacement has a to be nearly as iconic.
And only then will I splash the cash.
We are all Android fanboi's so whatever we rock is cool.

The biggest question, as I see it, with the Note 3, is

Whether you'll use it bare, or inside some type of a case.
On one hand, the Note 3 is a beautiful device. Shielding it with a GEL/TPU case will destroy its looks completely. Moreover, using a case will also make the dimensions of the device much bigger, undermining Samsung's heroic attempts to decrease its dimensions for a better grip.
On the other hand, a device as heavy and as delicate as the Note 3 will not survive a fall without a noticeable scar. And it *will* eventually fall.
So what do you prefer ? a scarred device (probably even with broken front glass), or a shielded device with horrible looks and cumbersome grip ?
To be or not to be. Rather, beating a dead horse with a dead horse.
I use gelaskins. They don't offer the level of protection of a full case, but if you hold it like a $600-700 gadget *should* be held, then you don't need a full case

A gelaskin might protect from scratches, but not from falls.
You can be as careful as possible with the device, but once in several months it will fall, hard on concrete floor.
Mine will be wearing a screen protector and the flip wallet.

With the flip wallet, only *one* side is protected from directly hitting the floor. The other 3 sides are totally open for direct impact.
Already pre-ordered Spigen's Neo Hybrid. The way I look at it is: yes, its a sexy phone. So it deserves some sexy clothes. You don't take an ugly girl and put ugly clothes on her. You also don't take a hot girl and run her around town naked. Gotta find a sexy case for a sexy phone.

That's a really nice looking case, but I think you are adding a lot of bulk to the width of the device (because its built from two layers), I think at least 7-10 mm to the total width, which is crazy. This will make the device much harder to operate one handed. Samsung went through so much effort to make the device mostly screen, and this case undermine this effort, badly.

HI Great question.
I shall use a case and a screen protector as I have done with every smart phone and tablet since I started owning them.
With respect I differ on one point you raise. You really think the note looks good? Sony have the Xperia z, Z1 etc, HTC have the One and Apple are Apple, all premium brands and a premium price. This time around I sincerely expected Samsung to come up with decent aesthetics and a quality feel and build so what do they do they insult us with a cheap imitation leather look with plastic play stitching.
I have enjoyed all my Samsung devices going back to the nexus S, SGS2, 3, Note 1 etc but oh the quality of build materials has been and still is way below that of other top of the line mobiles. I changed from Samsung this year and went Sony with the Xperia Z and Xperia pad 10.1. I just have to write that holding those devices makes Samsung look very cheap, the sort of things you purchase at the market.
I have my Note 3 and Gear on order So I am again going back to plastic land in terms of the phone, I shall not be buying the Samsung tablet.
To date I had zero problems with the reliability of the Samsung products I have owned and own at present. I cannot for the life of me understand why Samsung appear to do their best to make their devices look and feel so......YUK.
One of the first things I shall be doing is changing that horrible insulting plastic leather back with one made in alloy by another brand. I shall not sell my Xperia Z until I am satisfied the Note 3 is satisfactory. If only Sony made a mobile with the same size screen. The Ultra is just bizarre to me with a 6.7" screen had that been smaller I would not be returning to Samsung until they started to manufacture quality products in terms of their casings.
Regards
Bare, and within a Golla wallet when not in use.
I have flipcovers, cases and other such additions that only serve to thicken and/or ruin the phone.
If you learn the meaning of being CAREFUL, you don't need a case.

I don't drop my phones. I'm only concerned about preventing incidental scratching of the screen and casing. I just took the screen protector off of my Epic 4G Touch and the screen looks brand new. She's been kept safe in a flexible TPU case and screen protector. I'd rather not use a full-body case on the Note 3 due to its size. The flip wallet is a good solution. I'm also considering some of the spigen options.
Naked and handled with TLC. If it falls, just cough up the funds to get it fixed or replaced with a newer model. I would say in 3 years I have dropped my phone 5 times, 3 of them on a soft carpet, one in and elevator and the fall was broken by grabbing the headphone cable and sticking out my foot. That leaves one dangerous fall in three years (I was luck, just a scratch to the case corner on the back). Lastly, believe it or not with the S3,if the back cover is scratched you can actually buff it out!

I will continue to take my chances by not using a screen saver or case. I have had the Droid incredible, Samsung fascinate, Samsung Droid Charge, S2, S3, HTC One, and with the exception of the S3 (cracked screen after 1 year) I will continue to use the Note 3 the same way.
I just can't stand covering up the natural look and feel of a phone. Not to mention in the case of the S3 adding to the bulk or the crappy feel of a screen protector especially when considering using a stylus. Of course I realize that one drop can damage the screen, but the tradeoff is worth it to me.
Kinda like if my wife were to wear some clothing at those special moments, it just wouldn't be the same.

Cracked screen

So I cracked my screen juggling to many things in my hands(phone energy drink, keys, ecig etc) tablet slipped right out of my hand. Funny thing is I am not even upset. I am usually OCD about cracks, I have $500 balance on this via T-Mobile EIP, got rid of jump so I am essentially screwed. Touch screen is fully working so it's still usable. I wonder how much Samsung will charge me to send it in for repair. May just sell it and make put it towards EIP plus make big payments. Idk. It really sucks but what can you do. Glass breaks, Samsung build quality sucks and so much more important things in life to worry about. Maybe this is a sign I should get the nexus 9. After all HTC is known for build quality and even though it's not likely going to be aluminum due to Nexus wireless charging I have a sneaking suspicion it will be miles ahead of anything Samsung produce anytime soon.
Anyone else rocking a cracked screen or repaired it either yourself or by Samsung/3rd party repair shop?
@md1008 feel for you mate and everyone else that this happens too.
There is a dissasembly thread few pages down in the "Help and Troubleshooting section".
From what I have gathered is that it will cost about $200 for Samsung to fix but its impossible to do yourself....here is a comment from shart from that exact thread kinda explains it well tbh....

So I have a p600 (Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Ed) and I dropped it on the corner. shattered the digitizer. I bought a new Digitizer and in the process of repairing it learned the hard way that it is next to impossible to separate the Digitizer from the LCD. Bottom line is that I now need a replacement LCD for my tablet now also. FYI, there is a Gummy adhesive, much like industrial rubber glue between the digitizer and the LCD and the surface adhesion is too great to separate the two without damaging the LCD, try as you might it's next to impossible.
For the Sake of science I have just busted my tablet. I blame nobody but myself in this mess, but let it be a lesson learned for everyone else after me.

Yeah I am too clumsy for self repair. Samsung quoted me 260 I believe. Really think I will wait to see what Nexus 9 brings to the table and price range. I wish Samsung would release a successor to the note 8.0 so far I have not read anything. Seems Samsung is mostly focused on their "tab" series

Yep, the screen is the most expensive in tablet or cell phone. Currently Ebay is selling $200 for the screen assembly, $140 for Hong Kong made and you have to do it yourself. The price for the note 10.1 2014 is dropping fast so it's not worth to repair. Save your money for the Nexus 9 would be the right choice....

Not worth paying 260 ... thats crazy. I'd jist keep using it as its only on the corner and see what your options are with the newer tablets and then either try give it a go yasel or just sell it on ebay or do what my brother did with his cracked Blackberry Tablet ... he put on a screen protector on (mind you there was no glass or sharp bits anyway) and gave it to his 3 year old kid to play games with haha.
I will probably put a screen protector the cracks spread through the whole screen. The thing that sucks is that it's the spen why I bought this bloody screen and using spen on cracked screen is not ideal. Otherwise I would never buy Samsung. I hate touchwiz(unless on note) and I hate even more how cheap Samsung products feel(they got better and the note 4 did have some praise in early review)
Personally I think on the original note they gave it a more premium build with crappy specs where as on this bad boy they cut cost and gave it the best specs(at that time) the og Note 10.1 I feel had an all round better build to it
http://m.yelp.com/biz/lord-of-the-phones-san-diego-9
These guys quoted me at $190 and have excellent yelp reviews. I think I may go with it.

Well if you tried a DIY job then I think if you buy a digitizer it will cost you about $50 and then probs $30 for delivery. So about $100 for labour isnt bad considering its a bigger job than I initally thought tbh.
Reading more and more it does seem like Samsung have made it impossible for an average joe to fix. And then atleast you have a tablet back.
I guess only you really know if its worth the cost for you or not. If I were you I'd wait and see what stuff is coming up and then put the $190 towards a newer tablet.
Anyhoo hope it works out whatever you do mate.
Yeah kinda what I am thinking, what sucks is I have a $500 left on this. I think I may go with it. I don't care about tablet specs as much as phones. I would have kept the original note 10.1 if it the software didn't such so bad. I figure if something did come around that is better I would get more money back if the screen is not cracked. Making the $200 lost almost a wash. I know no matter what I am getting an Otterbox. I know you drop tablets they break but I believe if was more durable the damage would be far less
Yeah cases do provide some protection for falls not sure how much protection my Official BookCover provides. What case did you have on it ... Can't tell what type of case it is from the picture you uploaded.
Its a generic case from eBay. I actually hated it, somehow when it was in the case I often couldn't use external buttons like power, home, or the menu/back. Pie solved the problem.
Looked on eBay and it doesn't look like a cracked note would get me much money so repair it is!
Put a screen protector on and although it's more usable smooth glass surface it actually looks worst. The glass shards and uneveness causes bubbles worst is that I had to keep reapplying the screen protector because of stupid glass shards causing dust and dirt make it's way inside
Oooooh I didnt realise that the cracks went along the entire screen, having the screen protector on really showed the extent of the damage blimey its bad. Yeah thats in no usable condition tbh I genuinly thought it was just the top right hand side that was damaged, aye a guess $190 to have your tablet back isnt too bad.
Sent via Note 10.1 2014 Edition on Tapatalk
Well today I bought an otterbox until I can afford $ to get it repaired. Comes with a screen protector which illuminates air bubbles plus I feel like if it drops it won't crack even more or at least will crack less. When the screen is lit up either with color or black its not noticeable, but when the screen is white it's an absolute eye sore. Does add significant weight. Add bulk but nothing unreasonable.
Here is white background, even worst browsing internet
As you see with dark colors the cracks blend right in
Also Walmart online(and only online they won't match prices) has this on sale for less than $45 with tax.

It's not an impossible or an expensive repair, really. Just takes a bit of patience to get it apart and back together, so as not to cause more damage than ya started with!

DESIGN: Ergonomics (In-Hand Feel)

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Note5 feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The glass back gets straight up gross if you're using it for long periods of time. I got a dbrand skin, though (just the matte white) and it's 10x better in terms of feel, plus it no longer attracts fingerprints. Also, with a skin, I don't have to worry as much about shattering the back glass. It's not as good as a case, but it's much more minimal.
I use a case for my Note 5 because its glass after all, but I must say this Note 5 seems less wider than the previous note which is more important in the hand than the screen size. If I cant hold a phone in one hand and have to worried about it dropping all the time then I will not get it.
i don have it yet but i checked it in the market few days ago
it s really the most beautiful phone i have ever seen
maybe not the most comfortable But i will put case anyway to fit in my hand better
it s really looks premium
I installed slickwraps black skin at the back, front and sides. The only con is when you want to put the device in a case you have to be careful not to peel the side skin off and some cases peel off the front.
On the other hand i agree with @svetius to protect all over the devices including camera lens
I'm anxiously waiting for my D-brand skin to cover the back. Yes, the device is gorgeous and has exceptional build quality... but it's a slippery mess in warm climates. Where I live, high humidity means you always have slightly humid hands. The device becomes extremely slippery in this situation. It doesn't help that the device also has some noticeable heat when operating in these hot temperatures.
The all Glass and metal body Feel awesome, for like 30 mins. I work on the diesel engines and I can't really enjoy the sexay feel all the time. Only when I go to church when I don't need a case for my phone. But it feels slippery after awhile in your hand. Too bad, the price of having sexay looks with metal and glass. The slippery fingers and hands is real. But I dont' care, it still dead sexay.
Have been a Note user since the 1st model upto date. Have gone astray lol, HTC, Sony, Nexus & Apple, even BlackBerry. But i have always come back to Samsung, and specially the Note series. The new design is awesome but the curve back sucks. Its too slippery. Since the bezels are slim there is no grip. Even though i have large hands still its difficult to grip this baby. And handling the phone in bed while lied down is a nightmare. I hope one day soon Samsung will go Nexus 6P like design, front glass with slim bezels and the back to be fully metal.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. After 9 months of having this phone, still can't help but feel left out. The note 5 between the 4 and the 7 was like the step child that know one cared about. I know that's a horrible example, but it's true. But I don't care what the haters say. It's a darn right beautiful device. Using it with out a case is almost impossible like you said, cause the nice clear glass is WAY TO SLIPPERY. But I still love this phone. By Next year November, I'll be available for upgrade and maybe, just maybe the note 8 will be a fantastic phone. If not, than the note 7 edge will be on sale

Samsung Branded Hard Case for the Note 10+

I just received my silver hard case today. It was part of my $150.00 in accessories offer.
It is a really nice case. It is as thin or even a little thinner that the Spigen Hybrid Clear I bought waiting on this.
The stands fell a little flimsy and don't know if they would stand up to repeated use. They work best in landscape. They ridges on the back feel good in the hand and are good for using one hand.
This is my first name brand case and overall i like it. Don't know if i would pay retail for it though.
It is really tight around the edges. I have a Whitestone cover on the way and wonder it will work with this. Any on try it yet?
Can you post a pic?

I've been using this variety of case since the Note 8. Wasn't sure if I was going to like the revised version for the Note 10+. My worries have been unfounded for the most part. The case is protective and not obtrusively bulky. The kickstands work well without getting in the way of everyday handling. It's a nice mid range protection rating case for sure. I would probably step up to something a bit tougher for outdoor use (deep forest exploring, fishing, etc) but like it as an everyday driver. I got mine in black to match my phone.
This is the case:
