DESIGN: Ergonomics (In-Hand Feel) - Galaxy Note5 General

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Note5 feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

The glass back gets straight up gross if you're using it for long periods of time. I got a dbrand skin, though (just the matte white) and it's 10x better in terms of feel, plus it no longer attracts fingerprints. Also, with a skin, I don't have to worry as much about shattering the back glass. It's not as good as a case, but it's much more minimal.

I use a case for my Note 5 because its glass after all, but I must say this Note 5 seems less wider than the previous note which is more important in the hand than the screen size. If I cant hold a phone in one hand and have to worried about it dropping all the time then I will not get it.

i don have it yet but i checked it in the market few days ago
it s really the most beautiful phone i have ever seen
maybe not the most comfortable But i will put case anyway to fit in my hand better
it s really looks premium

I installed slickwraps black skin at the back, front and sides. The only con is when you want to put the device in a case you have to be careful not to peel the side skin off and some cases peel off the front.
On the other hand i agree with @svetius to protect all over the devices including camera lens

I'm anxiously waiting for my D-brand skin to cover the back. Yes, the device is gorgeous and has exceptional build quality... but it's a slippery mess in warm climates. Where I live, high humidity means you always have slightly humid hands. The device becomes extremely slippery in this situation. It doesn't help that the device also has some noticeable heat when operating in these hot temperatures.

The all Glass and metal body Feel awesome, for like 30 mins. I work on the diesel engines and I can't really enjoy the sexay feel all the time. Only when I go to church when I don't need a case for my phone. But it feels slippery after awhile in your hand. Too bad, the price of having sexay looks with metal and glass. The slippery fingers and hands is real. But I dont' care, it still dead sexay.

Have been a Note user since the 1st model upto date. Have gone astray lol, HTC, Sony, Nexus & Apple, even BlackBerry. But i have always come back to Samsung, and specially the Note series. The new design is awesome but the curve back sucks. Its too slippery. Since the bezels are slim there is no grip. Even though i have large hands still its difficult to grip this baby. And handling the phone in bed while lied down is a nightmare. I hope one day soon Samsung will go Nexus 6P like design, front glass with slim bezels and the back to be fully metal.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. After 9 months of having this phone, still can't help but feel left out. The note 5 between the 4 and the 7 was like the step child that know one cared about. I know that's a horrible example, but it's true. But I don't care what the haters say. It's a darn right beautiful device. Using it with out a case is almost impossible like you said, cause the nice clear glass is WAY TO SLIPPERY. But I still love this phone. By Next year November, I'll be available for upgrade and maybe, just maybe the note 8 will be a fantastic phone. If not, than the note 7 edge will be on sale

Good news and bad news
Good news: Just been into Carphone Warehouse. And discovered Talk Mobile do a tariff. 12 month, £30/month, 400 mins, texts and Unlimited data with no fair usage limit. Handset £179. That in my eyes is a cracking deal.
Bad news: Handset looks nice, but has the ergonomics of a shoe box. Does not feel nice in the hand at all. Compared to my HD2. I maybe use to how my fone feels, but the edges just felt too square.
Also i tested both phones on moneysavingexpert.com homepage. The colours were perfect on the SG2. HD2 colours looked washed out. But I was testing clarity of the small letters. Both were identical. Iphone 4 is the yardstick for this and it fails.
So im passing on this and waiting for the HTC Sensation. The look and feel is paramount, u cant touch memory, so shouldnt miss it too much.
SG2= ergonomic fail.
I want to view pages without having to zoom all the time and read pdfs. Nice phone but no cigar, this time
Sorry.

to each its own. I couldnt stand my hd2 after having my galaxy s for a year. But it comes down to persoal preference. Im pretty sure theres some happy people enjoying there devices.
I agree. Nothing wrong with the phone, I just have a specific requirement to be able to use service manual pdf's on the move so i dont have to dig out the laptop.
Dont wanna troll. Just thought people who havent handled one yet maybe interested.

Having just upgraded from a HD2 yesterday I don't agree at all - the Galaxy S II feels a lot nicer in the hand. However, thanks to it's plastic construction, there is no doubt it feels less sturdy than HTC's offering. I get the impression that, despite the Gorilla Glass, one drop of this thing onto a hard surface would lead to a world of hurt. I'm not saying that is definitely the case but it feels that way.
I have a FlexiShield skin on order and I will feel a lot more comfortable once my phone is in it. I bought one for my HD2 18 months ago when I first got it and it saved it from at least a couple of drops. Superb cover.
On a side note, is anyone going to bother with a screen protector? I have never had a Gorilla Glass phone before so don't know the likelihood of it scratching. I much prefer touch-screen phones with no protector but for obvious reasons it's not a good idea.
lots of people aren't bothering with ascreen protector. they bring a good point that... anything that can scratch the gorilla glass will probably pass through any screen protector anyway. having said that... i'm getting one. i have one for my GS as well.
as for the GS II i just may not put it on yet
I like the shape of the sgs 2, very thin and light makes it ideal shape.
Yeah, we really needed to know this. Nobody is forcing you to buy anyone phone so if you don't like this one there is no need to run home, jump on the interwebz and make a thread on the forum about it.
I hope you like which ever phone you do get.

Dropped my SGS multiple times on hard flooring, concrete and Asphalt and despite thinking one drop and it was a goner the thing doesn't have a scratch on the screen, body still looks new and works perfectly. I wonder if the SGS II is the same way but I will not be dropping it anytime soon to find out.
I love my Galaxy SII but it seems that you might be better off with a 7in tablet such as the Galaxy Tab or maybe a bigger tablet such as the Advent Vega or iPad.
I personally couldn't read PDFs on a screen smaller than 7in for very long.
This is good info for me. Nexus One owner and I sported an HD2 for a few weeks and loved the feel and size, knowing it had the dimensions of my next phone (G2x was a failure for me).

OP must have small hands, and you know what they say!
Small hands...........
Small gloves...
yeh I know what your on about I went from iPhone 4 to gs2 and text is so hard to read with no reflow option, but I gain so much more with customization, and the weight is great, the iPhone feels like such a brick now.
in saying that I had a hd2 and really missed it after I got the iPhone, thought I could get that feeling back with the sgs2 but it's not the same hd2 is a quality product.
enjoy your sensation and thanks for being honest in the lions den lol
i do agree with the [OP] regarding the "ergonomic fail" thing.
..and this is coming from a Samsung phone fanatic like me
personally, i don't like at all the shell design of the SGS2, i'll definitely not use the SGS2 naked, it looks simply disgusting... seriously, for the lack of a better word to describe its design.
unfortunately i love all the technology packed inside that "disgusting" shell so is either take it or leave it, and i choose to take it
so the ergonomic fail became a non issue for me, as i'll be replacing the case, and using with a protection case, and other accessories i always slap onto all of my phones; i praise the after market accessories people to make the impossible possible

Disgusting? Seriously? Dear me, it takes all sorts I guess and the world would be a boring place if we all had the same opinions.
IMO: I like very much the design, I can hold it in one hand and even type with one hand, it holds perfectly in my right hand... Even ergonomically I like it. It's simply perfect for me.
It's up to you to choose another phone. I would never choose another now. Especially HTC sensation which have many things less than Galaxy S2.
+10 I find the design very nice unlike some here
And I would never change it for nothing on the market that's just a piece of beauty, a very thin piece actually
What I don't understand is the point of this topic ? If you feel it not as you want anyone else could feel it in the hand differently like me. And many peeps have already said they like the feel in the hand in this thread so your opinion can't be taken for facts until someone interested in it hold it for real :/ anyway...
Pitching in on the ergonomics of the device being awesome, for me anyway. If you have really small hands then this will probably be a pretty bad phone for you, since it wont fit comfortably into a normal grip. That aside, for people with average or large hands, this design works very well. You can keep a very firm grip on it easily, and one handed operation works too, all while having a 4.3" screen.
Not sure about the people saying it feels cheap or anything, unless you correlate cheap with light - because it's very light. If this is the case, you can buy a nice big heavy cover for the device to make it feel heavier and sturdier - but that seems really stupid to me. A phone is meant to be mobile, the lighter the better.
Phones won't be perfect until they're razor thin, bendable, and weight as much as paper! And the SGS2 is firmly on the right track.
To me I'm loving everything about the phone, ergonomics included. I don't have huge hands but find the phone very easy to hold and use for one handed operation.
As for a screen protector I will say a big NO. I work for a Verizon retailer and we have a demo line hooked up to their version of the first galaxy s, the fascinate, that also has gorilla glass. Being inquisitive and it being a demo line, I decided to test the durability of gorilla glass. Grabbed a phillips head screw driver and preceded to try and scratch the screen. Repeatedly I scraped it, scratched back and forth quickly, and somewhat violently tried to stab it. Wiped off the screen with a micro-fiber cloth and not one scratch or mark on it, gorilla glass is really some remarkable stuff.
I'm not saying its impossible to damage it, but it will take some serious effort. Since most of you guys probably take care of your phones anyway, with gorilla glass your screen will be fine. A screen protector on gorilla glass just seems redundant .
Problem is... the old galaxy didn't have an oleophobic coating. You try taking a screwdriver to that and the coating WILL come off. The screen will be resilient, but not the coating, sorry.

The HD2 is such a class act to follow, it's replacement has a to be nearly as iconic.
And only then will I splash the cash.

Moto has totally figured out ergonomics. Rounded corners and back. Feels nice and steady in the hand.
Agreed, although I wish it had the fingerprint sensor on the back like my Nexus 5X. Also the weight is both reassuring and a little annoying. Weight for weights sake.
The rounded corners are very comfortable, and the smooth shiney back is actually more grippy than I would have thought. Fingerprint reader on the front is a little weird, as I have to shift the phone's center weight in my hand to reach the sensor with my thumb, but it's not that bad. It definitely feels very "dense" meaning it's weight is very well spaced out thru the device and it feels good to hold. The only sharp edges are on the camera bump, which I'm a little nervous about damaging as it's so prominent (but I also worry about that with every phone, so that's not exactly unique to this model).
I love how it feels in the hand made me sad to put a case on it. The way this phone feels reminds of the iPhone 7 especially around the edges.

I just bought this phone last night and all I can say is that the build quality and in-hand feel is amazing.
But to compare it with HTC 10 with similar body, it feels bulky since the back isn't tapered.
Only if Lenovo decided to put a flagship processor coz everything about this phone is already highend.
Mine is the 4gb/64gb dual sim variant.
i bought this phone just because of the ergonomics! i'm so in love right now! if there's anything were to happen to my moto x4 right now... i don't know what i would do to that person who did it haha! that's how much i'm obsessed right now!
Amazing phone. Dope design and look. However it is somewhat slippery and sliding. I'll have to put on a case, even if I do not want it. Eye catching device.
It’s a little too wide, especially after putting a case on. The width also exaggerates the weight of it. The shape is nice and comfortable. Just not ‘4.7” iPhone’ comfortable. I think 4.7-5” would’ve been good, and brought the weight down too. .
It has good ergonomics and the back isn't slippery (although the sides are). I also like the placement of the fingerprint sensor, as I unlock a lot the phone while it's laying on a desk (plus, One button nav ftw).
But the weight is too much on the heavy side for me. With case it becomes exhausting to hold for long periods. But it makes the phone feel more premium (which is not something I really care for).
It's also very very fragile. I wouldn't use it without a case.
Slippery slope. I always fear that it slips outta my hands, and it has glass body so....

Been very happy with this case, as it doesn't add any bulk, and it won't slip out of your hand.

Great. Thanks man, have a nice one
It is average. I have small, danty hands and prefer my work IPhone S as the perfect size - my thumb can reach everything. On the X4, there are times where I can't reach and either strain my hand or have to change holding positions.
One of the reasons I chose the X4 was because it was about the same size as my old, beloved S5. I do not intend to ever buy a larger one.
For what it's worth, the build quality is really impressive. I have a black x4 and everything about it screams a million bucks. Those with any knowledge of what a premium phone should look and feel like will appreciate this phone. Sturdy, beautiful and perfect for someone who's not into the whole big phones hype. Finger print sensor on the back would have been a bit better since the bottom bezel could then have potentially housed another speaker but one shouldn't be too greedy. Overall, this build quality beats anything in the updated price range that it's selling for now. Maybe something like the Nokia phones could come close but nothing else.

Ergonomics (in-hand feel)

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.

Considering the unusual form factor of this device, it's very well balanced. It's a tall boi with a slightly strange 2636 x 1080 resolution (21.9:9 aspect ratio) but you quickly get used to it and most apps actually make a lot of sense being tall.
The battery is actually batteries, being split between the top and bottom sections. This means the weight is natural and balanced so single handed use is perfectly possible, especially if you use Samsung's single handed mode.
I would like to preface this by saying that this comes from the perspective of someone with little tiny baby hands. With that out of the way, I can safely say that the feel of the phone in hand is excellent. The metal and glass construction makes the phone feel robust, though the phone is a bit on the slippery side. Every time I've used it, I felt as though the Flip would be better with a textured satin or some matte glass finish, which is why I ordered a Dbrand skin for the phone. The most surprising thing about the phone's ergonomics was how easy it was to access all of the buttons. Even with my tiny hands, reaching all the buttons or performing fingerprint scanner gestures—which makes the ergonomics of the phone even better imo—was a breeze, and so was flipping it open and closed with one hand. What really makes using the phone for hours on end comfortable, though, is the fact that the top and bottom are separated by a hinge, which makes the phone feel cool even during load (though maybe I'm just being extra about that, idk).
For day-to-day use, the 21.9:9 display ratio wasn't that hard to adjust to, but I did have to make some significant hand adjustment to reach the top corners of the device. The one-handed mode does help with that, though.
TL;DR:
This phone feels great in the hand, but they should make it less slippery next time.
On the topic of in-hand feel, the slippery case it came with came loose like a bar of soap and broke my screen. Already had to pay a deductible to replace my device. Definitely get a grippier case. Also, I had to go with a tall keyboard because of the aspect ratio of the phone. Otherwise, I honestly love it, just so bummed about the case and already needing a replacement phone.
Necroing this as i got my flip about two weeks ago.
Im a tall guy, around 6.6ft /2m with fairly large hands.
With mine phone came jet black rubbery case free of charge with sellers note "never take it out of the case."
It was a nice gesture, but i thought "theres no chance its THAT bad."
Few hours that i used the phone without the case was funny, like possessed bar of soap. Its super slippery, it literally slipped out of my hands and straight on my bed two times and phone is "moving" (sliding) constantly, even if theres smallest unbalanced surface even on clothy surfaces.
So, with this phone a good rubbery case is a MUST if you want your phone to last.
Metal, chunky bezels make phone look more premium that usual, but also gives false illusion of security, which is actually not there.
Display is nice, comming from iPhone i think is brighter and has better color quality, tho this is subjective.
Display is also squishy, mine already has small dent in where my keyboard is from typing.
I was unfortunate enough that my came with protective screen being damaged, it glued off and fold in a opposite way from the folding which made a air bubble underneath it and i had to remove it.
Squisiness of the display and its clam form factor gives a bit more security for the display since, by now, on normal phone i would already have small display scratches from everyday use and putting in/pulling out phone in pocket.
Also, be aware at all times where you phone is! Despite being on heavier side, folded phone in its quite small, i know few people who lost track/forgot where they phone is and sit on it few times which resultet in pricey repair, changing their display.
Its also well balanced, bigger battery is in lower body so phone has nice balance to it, if you ask me maybe even better than usual chocolate bar.
Its a bit heavier than iphoneX so longer usage can put a bit of strain on your hands.
Overall, i love the phone but im dreading the the day when/if i have tho change display.
This is one of those phones which you either love or dont understand why people love it, i pretty much told my seller "this is stupidest decision ever and probably a dead investment, i wont be able to resell it and buy a new phone later on, but i love it, remings me the time of when i was younger and i have to have it."

This is somehow my biggest problem with this phone. As others have established, it's one slippery, tall boi. Even with my fairly large hands, using android you tend to end up cradling it with your hands around the bottom of the phone. Then its so top heavy that I've almost had it flip out of my hand multiple times now.
So slippery that I can barely hold it in my hands. Every pick up from the pocket in the open is a risk. What's the point of making quality and premium glass if you can't hold it without a rubber case. You wont see this luxury when case is on. I also have large hands and it's almost impossible to get to the top when you need back arrow in some apps. 16:9 aspect ratio is not so bad but I prefer the normal one like on Galaxy S20. But then again on Galaxy you wont get stock Android experience. That's why I choose this phone over S20. The others are just too big (>6.2 inch) for my taste.
Yes, its too slippery. But its easy to fix with a kinesio tape or any better looking tape.
And since yesterday I am testing "IMAK HYDROGEL III PROTECTION FILM BACK" - and looks and feels ok
I use a slim transparent case and got the slippery thing solved
I waiting for a case to arrive. There is no Sony Xperia 5 ii case in Oaxaca, Mexico. It's like handling an ice cube or a wet trout.

How's the inhand feel, of the s21 ultra please?
It's a death wish not to use a case.
My 10+ like most newer Samsung's is slippery as a fish. It's never out of it's Bolt case except for maintenance.
Even if your a demigod that never drops a phone consider the mere mortals that may inadvertently come into contact with it.
A true story of The Flying Fish (warning there is unspeakable carnage in this story).
My boss once handed me his caseless new Samsung before I could say a word. I wear gloves with finger cutouts all the time.
My 10+'s Bolt case is real easy to grip; it never slips in my hand at all with it's golfball like skin texture.
Enter the slippery fish; as soon as he nonchalantly put it in my hand it popped into the air a couple inches as I tried to grasp it as I would the 10+.
Learning curve, being distracted, information overload etc. Plus I told him initially I really didn't want to... whatever it's a lick on you.
It happened fast enough that I wasn't able to regrasp it, as I considered it would slip out again and gain more velocity. I can still see it.
It landed on concrete in a frame rail faceplant rendering it useless. Badly cracked screen and frame.
First phone I ever destroyed.
I felt bad but my boss made two big mistakes; always have a case and don't give your phone to other people especially if they're wearing gloves standing on concrete.
Fortunately my glove was unscathed... yes, well.
Received mine yesterday. Setup was easy as I was coming from an S10 plus. First impression was it is top heavy. Still fells a bit top heavy but getting used to it. Quality of fit finish and materials is as you would expect. Feels solid in hand. It does feel like a flagship phone. Wouldn't have expected any other tbh. ... Slippy so a case is a must imo
Feels great in hand with leather case. Much easier to handle than p30 pro.
I absolutely love how the S21 (regular) feels in the hands, it doesn't dig into my palm, and coming from an S10 i also appreciate that there's no more accidental touch on the side of the screen with my palm because the screen is no longer curved. good stuff!

Just be real careful handing it to someone
In a Bolt case the curve screen is an asset and accidental touches don't happen. I use it to house One Handed Operation plus; it's not wasted real estate.

Agreed. The Samsung leather case (or similar) should be considered mandatory to reduce the fear, uncertainty, and dread which comes with handling slippery Samsung phones.
I find the front-screen fingerprint reader less reliable than my Samsung S9 or Pixel 3A. In particular, if my hands are freshly washed (slightly damp; not wet) or dirty (from petting the dog) it might take a few taps to get recognition. Samsung's documentation mention that excessively dry hands (perhaps in winter-time) can also affect the fingerprint reader. My muscle-memory keep making my index finger try to hunt for the rear sensor.
I'm guessing that in a couple of weeks I'll learn to wipe my finder on my t-shirt to clean and dry it, and I'll learn the exact location of the on-screen sensor.
