[Q] NTFS? - Thrive General

I dont have a thrive right now but I was just wondering if there is any idea if external hard drives larger then 1tb are ever going to be supported and is the most widely used file system, NTFS ever going to be supported?

I believe I read somewhere that the 3.2 Honeycomb update will bring NTFS support for external hard drives. I can't speak to supporting storage larger than 1TB.

I can read my 2TB NTFS external hd with the eee pad and I was able to do it before 3.2

Toshiba has said they're add NTFS support in a future update. Whether that's included in a 3.1 patch or they wait to include it in 3.2 is yet to be known.

thanks for the info

[Q] Android 3.2 SD Card Support Question

Please look at the SD Card Support section here: http://blogs.computerworld.com/18692/android_32_upgrade
So is this site saying with Android 3.2, if we were on another tablet rather than the Transformer, we wouldn't be able to copy and paste a file onto the external SD card at all?
But since we have the Transformer, Asus allows us to copy to the SD card?
Am I understanding this right?
If yes, WTF is Google thinking not letting you copy to the SD card on other tablets?! That was literally the selling point of the Transformer for me...
true
oiuooigiugui
I'm guessing that Toshiba will enable full SD card support on the Thrive as well.
What is the use in preventing people from writing to their SD cards? I just don't get it.

I just don't understand why Google wouldn't want us managing data on external storage. I feel bad for Xoom users... They're being treated like they're the casual iPad user who wouldn't be able to take full advantage of having a file browser.
That's one of the benefits to using Android over iOS, and I just don't see the sense.
Xoom 3G doesn't even have 3.2 yet. Tsk tsk tsk!
Wrong. Its google. Xoom is the default google device so no mods from motorola allowed (which is why motoblur is not on there). It is also why it gets updates first at least in the states. Asus and acer modded theirs to allow for sd support, but its not googles code. Also way samsung tab 10.1 has no sd card slot.

It makes no sense to me unless it's a feature the tablet manufactures wanted so we're forced to buy the larger gig storage devices. I'm hoping that one day we can get a custom ROM that fixes this dumbassness.

Right, which means that the Xoom is really gimped compared to competing tablets. I have no idea why someone who is in the market for an Android tablet would want the Xoom over a Transformer when it clearly has inferior features.
What does Google have to gain by not offering write-to-SD functionality? This is just further fragmenting Android...
let me give you a market hint Google,
no SD card access = BUY iPAD/iPhone
Not sure about the rest of you guys but I lost the ability to copy files to my SD card with es file explorer.
The odd thing is my SNES9X emulator seems to have no problems writing sa'e files onto the SD card.
Edit: nevermind it was user error. Had a file with the same name in the folder. We still retain full read / write capabilities.

[REQ] exFAT/microSDXC support

I've had my SGS2 for almost 4 months now, running KE7 firmware. Within the next few hours, I'll be getting the SanDisk 64GB microSDXC card, and I'd like to use it in my SGS2.
Based on my reading of other threads in this forum relating to microSDXC support, it's my understanding that the SGS2 hardware will support this card, but that software support will be required to handle the exFAT filesystem, which is the standard format for microSDXC cards.
To determine if exFAT support existed, I did a test last night, formatting a known-good 16GB microSDHC with exFAT and mounting it on my SGS2. However, when the phone powered up and scanned the card for media, it reported that the card couldn't be read and offered me the option of formatting it with FAT32. That suggests to me that the firmware expects micro SD cards to be formatted only as FAT32.
Again, from reading other threads on the forum, mostly related to NTFS support, it sounds like it should be possible to modify the firmware to support exFAT-formatted microSD cards. So I have two questions/requests:
Does a custom firmware package supporting the exFAT filesystem for microSD cards already exist?
If not, would one of the devs like to take a shot at making one?
If this mod hasn't already been made, I'd be more than willing to assist the devs in any way I can. I've been a software developer for almost 25 years, but almost all of my experience is in Windows, and is pretty much evenly split between user & kernel mode, so I know a thing or two about filesystems & drivers.
The last time I did anything in the Unix kernel was back in the days of AT&T SVR4 and SunOS, when Linus was just beginning to develop the Linux kernel. So doing this myself is a bit of a stretch, which is why I'm asking for help from the dev community.
Any help I get would be greatly appreciated.
You would need to grab the kernel source, from samsung or a custom kernel, then build it with fuse support and the correct file system module, or just with extfat support if fuse doesn't have the correct module, the cm7 wiki has a good guide to building kernels then combining them with a ramdisk.
You would need to use a ramdisk from a stock kernel for it to work with stock roms.

Easy for you to say -- my last Unix experience was 20 years ago.
Anyway, I just took delivery on the card. When I stuck it in the SGS2, it offered to reformat it as FAT32, which I did. Once formatted as FAT32, the card appears to work pretty well. SDTools gives read/write speeds of 18 MB/s and 6.6 MB/s respectively; that suggests that the SGS2 is the roadblock, since the card is supposed to handle 30 MB/s reads.
Still, it'd be nice to have exFAT support, so we can use the microSDXC cards as they come from the factory, and to allow for file sizes > 4GB for DVD/BluRay rips and other HD video formats.
Haha, it's easy to say but it's not that easy unless you are experienced in this kinda stuff.
I couldn't easily do it myself or i would

do you wanna say that microSDXC already supported by stock SGSII kernel?
How much free space on this card SGSII shows after format to FAT32?
In stock ROM SGSII supports up to 32GB SDHC, it won't support 64GB SDXC cards, regardless the file system format.
MicroSDXC is working on my SGS2. I've been running the SanDisk 64GB microSDXC in my phone all day. I had to reformat it to FAT32, but it's working fine.
The card shows up as having a capacity of 59.46 GB, and SDTools shows read/write speeds of 18.0 MB/s and 6.6 MB/s respectively. I've played both MP3 and videos off the card, without any problems.
I'll beat on it some more over the weekend, but all signs seem to indicate that microSDXC works as long as you reformat it to use the FAT32 filesystem.

For a class 6 card its normal , read is very good actually close to class 10. My 32GB class 10 Adata Reads 21.3 MB/s Write 15.5 MB/s.
That claim of 30MB/s might be with exFAT or plain BS marketing claims. Anyways i ordered one also 64GB is god send for media storage.
Ordered mine too, will post feedback when I get it (although hopefully loads of other people will have confirmed by then too).
Where did you order?

Right now, they're available only from the SanDisk online store on their company website. I'd expect them to show up at other online retailers in the next few weeks, if you're willing to wait.

[RESOLVED] A500 - SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDXC Class 6 Memory Card compatible?

Anybody know if the A500 is capable of using the 59.4GB formatted space on the SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDXC Class 6 Memory Card?
edit: answer = Yes with setup tip provided by ojones838
I may be wrong but I'm fairly certain that it only supports up to 32gb microsd

That's strange, is there big difference between supporting 32gb and 64gb? I would have thought that when in development they would have made sure it supported the largest microsd on the market. 64gb (59) would be nice to have.
well, i googled, thanks for making me second-guess myself. here's your answer.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/acer-iconia-a500/141186-64gb-external-microsd-card.html
Yep. Others here have said that it works. It just won't work with FAT due to the limits of the FS. FAT32 or NTFS will work.
Guys,
I have used this SD card for months and it works like a champ. All I had to do was to format the SD in another device since the A500 has no provision for formatting a SD card. I formatted mine in my Galaxy S II, Epic 4G Touch(my first 64G SD Card went in this device anyway). Since then neither device has skipped a beat. The SD cards are expensive though. So be very careful taking them out of your device. ALWAYS unmount it or Eject it within file mgr before removing it. Also handle with care. More questions? Just ask...
Update: That's right! You don't have to unmount or eject it after use in the A500. As a matter of fact there's NO option to do so... But if you use it in another device you may need to unmount or eject it.
Just to add to the information given, a few weeks ago I bought from Woot a "Centon 64Gb Class 10" SDXC card (not micro...full size) for $55 and am using it happily with my A500. I use it with a Targus USB card reader and attach it to the full size USB port on the A500. The only snag which occurred originally was that I used "SD's" own application to format it and it would only format in "Ext", this turned out to be unreadable by the A500 but I resolved the problem by formatting the card in Windows as Fat32. This now works fine and given the size you can put on as many movies as you wish.
Just to add to what ojones838 said above.....Generally speaking the A500 will automatically mount external SD storage or USB storage as soon as it is plugged in (at least this is true of my ICS rom) but it's wise to "Unmount" the storage media before removing it.
Just for future reference, the hardware and software limitations for size are 32GB (FAT and SDHC) and 2TB (SDXC). Nothing in-between those.
Just picked one of these up from eBay. Thanks for pointing these out and the details on how to format and use it on the A500 !
FYI - Just ran SD Card Tester on it and it ran at 5.91MB/s Write and 9.19MB/s Read. So inline with expectations for a class 6 card.
@saeba.....Glad the card works for you, as I said above with that amount of usable space you can put as many movies (including large size blu-ray's) as you want. Certainly enough to keep me happy on my transatlantic flights!
Thanks for the info re the speed test, class 6 seemed to me about right.....have learn't to take maker's claims about speed with a grain of salt.

Why can't my Tab 2 7.0 read exFAT 64GB card when my Galaxy S3 reads it just fine?

Why can't my Tab 2 7.0 read exFAT 64GB card when my Galaxy S3 reads it just fine?
right now, my solution is to format both 64GB cards to FAT32 format in order make it work in both tablet and phone....
Seems to me Samsung simply put more resources into the galaxy s3 since it has a much bigger potential market than the tab 2. Tablets are still something of a niche item. While I wouldn't be without one now (it makes a wonderful e book reader) it doesn't really fill any needs for a lot of people. If you have a laptop and a smart phone already you don't really need a tablet, it's more of a luxury.
Also this tablet is made for the budget market. It's around half the price of the new iPad, and cheaper than some of the other androids on the market.
If it really bugs you a lot I'd be willing to wager that the 10.1" note will have exfat support though.

From my understanding most android devices care limited to 32gb, support for higher capacities has to be added in. Some devices can read 64gb sdxc cards and even fewer can read the 128gb sdxc cards. Samsung likely didnt add extended support due to the budget nature of these tablets, while their flagship devices, which cost more get the extra bells and whistles.
It may be able to be added in with a custom kernel, as could alternate file system support.
As far as I know, exFAT is a proprietary file system of Microsoft, making it works on non-Windows devices the vendors may have to pay for that.

Best bet for android sd cards is fat32. I have had nothing but problems with exfat and ntfs.

I don't have the plus but the pro so what a I am going to say may be wrong but I am guessing its the same. The pro doesn't support exfat file system, so without doing silly work arounds the sdcard doesn't support files larger than 4GB! This may be a problem if you want to watch hd films stored on a memory card.
Like I said I am just guessing this is the same for the plus as the pro, its lenovo being too cheap to buy exfat license.

Sounds strange ... But im guessing a partition manager app will sort that out.. im gonna try it out.. sounds strange. Have you tried formatting the card exfat before putting it in the tablet and having it as a external hdd??
on the tab 3 pro it doesn't matter if you format it first as the tab can't read it and says it needs formatting. There is a root method of getting exfat support and some have said they use 3rd party file manager apps. I don't need anything bigger than 4gb so have not tried either method.

Reformat the sdcard as internal drive and you will have support for bigger files. But you will loose the GB that are internal ftom factory for some reason.
