Why can't my Tab 2 7.0 read exFAT 64GB card when my Galaxy S3 reads it just fine? - Galaxy Tab 2 General

Why can't my Tab 2 7.0 read exFAT 64GB card when my Galaxy S3 reads it just fine?
right now, my solution is to format both 64GB cards to FAT32 format in order make it work in both tablet and phone....

Seems to me Samsung simply put more resources into the galaxy s3 since it has a much bigger potential market than the tab 2. Tablets are still something of a niche item. While I wouldn't be without one now (it makes a wonderful e book reader) it doesn't really fill any needs for a lot of people. If you have a laptop and a smart phone already you don't really need a tablet, it's more of a luxury.
Also this tablet is made for the budget market. It's around half the price of the new iPad, and cheaper than some of the other androids on the market.
If it really bugs you a lot I'd be willing to wager that the 10.1" note will have exfat support though.

From my understanding most android devices care limited to 32gb, support for higher capacities has to be added in. Some devices can read 64gb sdxc cards and even fewer can read the 128gb sdxc cards. Samsung likely didnt add extended support due to the budget nature of these tablets, while their flagship devices, which cost more get the extra bells and whistles.

It may be able to be added in with a custom kernel, as could alternate file system support.

As far as I know, exFAT is a proprietary file system of Microsoft, making it works on non-Windows devices the vendors may have to pay for that.

Best bet for android sd cards is fat32. I have had nothing but problems with exfat and ntfs.

The SD card support (Updated: Answer from Motorola support)

My original question:
Anyone know how is this SD card support on Xoom?
I meant, is it micro SD card, mini or full size?
Is there any hardware slot?
Or is it via USB port?
I don't recall there is hardware slot there to insert SD card when I saw all those "hands on".
Answer from Motorola support can be seen from my update here:

All legit androids use microSD, as does the XOOM.
I don't know what you mean by hardware slot.
USB Port? Are you asking how the microSD slot interfaces with the device? Your question is good, because I too have been wondering where the SD Card goes.

I am not seeing any mention of SD card slot in the specs or in the user manual. Am I missing it somewhere?

I saw it in a video but it was not the same model. It had a different color for the back. But it is odd that on Best Buy site the specs show NO for sd slot and no mention of it on Motorola site or user manual. Not sure why this is a big secret since it is a big deal and in fact, deal breaker for me if it is not there.

I think I remember hearing somewhere around CES that the SD card slot didn't work and was going to be activated by a later patch. What's up with the Xoom being shipped with all kinds of missing functionality?
The BGR hands-on with the Xoom this week mentions the microSD slot is on the top of the device, along with the headphone jack and SIM slot (if applicable). There is a microSD slot on the device. It's been mentioned several times that it will require a software update from Moto to activate it - it's not clear whether that's a Google issue or a Motorola issue. There has been some speculation that it was because Android 3.0 didn't yet support SD cards at the time the Xoom was being demo'd.

Perhaps that is why it is not mentioned in any of the official specs. Pretty lame for a $800 device. So I wonder if the slot is there, when it will actually work? Very sloppy.

I just hope it actually works without waiting for an update. It is odd that Best Buy specs for the device do not mention an SD slot even exists.
Yes. Support WILL come. I would love to know how they are having trouble with something so basic. Based on the Viewsonic G-Tablet labeling internal memory as SD 1 and the SD card as SD 2.. perhaps they are working on a more fluid integration of it. As long as they let me put the 50,000 apps I plan to install on the internal memory similar to App2SD I'm happy for now.

I'm not bashing the iPad, but do the expensive iPad WiFi+3G versions support microSD? No, they don't. MicroSD support will come, likely shortly after launch, and 32GB of storage will be enough to tide people over until it does. I'm not worried about it.

I don't understand this comparison. If Apple had a MicroSD card on the device, it would most definitely work out of the box.

An interesting point. iPad doesn't have the functionality at all and never will based on current devices. You have to decide how much space you want at release, which I find annoying as I always bought the cheapest device.

On one hand, I agree, Apple never releases a device unfinished. On the other hand, they accomplish this by taking a long time for a device to come to market, and they are always behind in both specs and features.
Apple has proven the merit of a wholly controlled ecosystem that lends to a more solid device. Many people don't care about specs and advanced features.

Apple does take their time and won't rush to just release a product.
I am sure motorola will have a patch ready to go soon if not already. they may have already gotten it done and put on the device.
Being an early adopter of gadgets I understand that sometimes the first release can be a little buggy.
However it bugs me that Motorola did not clarify these issues. No flash and no SD support out of the gate is something that should have been clarified to everyone. I have followed pretty closely the last month and did not realize either of these issues until today.
Having the promise of working features after day 1 is not always a lock as my Galaxy S phone was promised to have an update for flash support and an update to fix the GPS issue yet that has never happened.
i am still buying one on Thursday but will be deciding on the 29th day if I feel I can trust Motorola.
MOTO just wanted to wear the hat of "first to market a honeycomb tablet". Its a race for that hat, with solid patches coming down the pipe pretty quickly.

So, apparently, this could be something NEW to Android.
There is only 1 single partition for all apps, media, files, etc.
That's good!
I think I talked about this in a different thread, but the reason for the delay in sd card support is because the sd card will not be mounted/unmounted whenever you plug it into the pc. Which I would prefer. Having my sd card mount and unmount every time I plug it into the pc is annoying.
This is the reason for the delay. Rebuilding the wheel takes some time.

Sandisk 64Gb microSDXC : have anyone tryed already?

Guys, newest sandisk 64gb microSDXC will fit Defy?
http://www.sandisk.com/products/mobile1-memory-products/sandisk-ultra-microsdxc-card
It will fit in nicely becuse it is the same size as the microSDHC.
It doesnt work out of box ;you have to format it in the phone..then you' ll get 59 GB of free space.
No, i dont have it but i have read about it and it works in htc,samsung..
According to specs, memory is upgrade-able only to 32gb.
Will a 64gb card work?
I think you should take the risk and test it yourself
So does it work? That´s a very nice sd card
the defy supports 32gb sd official. 64 gb not supported. I think for any phone 16gb is stable for space and speed. how do they fill up 32gb?!

There are also reports that they are working on many older devices for those wondering. Some include the EVO 4G, original Galaxy S, and even the HTC Desire Z (aka T-Mobile G2). With both old and new, smartphones and tablets being able to take advantage of the 64GB SD cards this is a good sign many more will have the same fate. We can only assume manufacturers didn’t state SDXC support because none were out on the market at time of launch, or maybe there are other reasons yet unknown.
At first insert the device may say corrupt or error, just reformat your 64GB card inside the Android phone or tablet and you’re good to go. While many are currently working, this doesn’t mean they have full support. The chance of the cards failing, getting errors, and possibly losing all your stored data is still a possibility so use at your own risk for now. Hopefully we see more 64GB SDXC cards soon and at lower prices because $219 is a bit steep for me. — Thanks Murray!

SDXC cards use exfat file system. If defy doesnt support that then it probably wont work.
Ive seen reports of it being working on a lot of phones, so there's a chance it might work on defy, but the card needs to be formatted on pc first before using on phone and it wont work at full speed due to limitation on the old sdhc reader (sdxc reader is faster)
I'm asking to avoid risks ).
Why 64gb? Cause i have 32gb card and it have about 4gb left. Actually last few month i've forced to clean up card from time to time. Audiobooks, DVR, Navigation software, record lections on dictaphone... That stuff takes space but i've used not to worry about `if do i have avaliable space left` ). Also this card declares class 6, now i own Sandisk/32gb class 2, so it not just larger, it laso should be faster. Sometimes DVR+Navigation provides some lags, for example.
maybe the max is 32GB,class 10
you can buy but i thin you will see only 32gb space...
can defy uses class 10 sd card? i heard there is problem in taking picture with class 10 card...
read posts on XDA, yes it has a problem with 6 and 10 class
CM7 and miui can run fine class 10 cards now.

SDXC on Defy?
It really works on Defy. I own one for a month now. Cost 80€/106$. Absolutely no problems after format. 59GB free. About 6MB/s write, 16MB/s read speed. Have fun.
Greater than 32Gb?
Biggest I've used is a 32Gb class 10. No problems at all.

This is funny yet strange. Why you think an article on a website has more truth than a forum post of a member? Both are written by a single person. Both can be faked or real.
The guy on the website used a newer Tegra device so his article is irrelevant for Defy users. The SDXC in my Defy works flawlessly for weeks now with 20GB free space left.
Of course you can ignore this. I don't care. But if you need space buy the SDXC and have fun.

Out Today!...

On Digitimes "Samsung reportedly to phase out from microSD card market" as you can see it is being reported that Samsung plans to phase out microSD cards http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20130507PD224.html. Also, consider if they go the way of Amazon, Nexus and the rest with no microSD cards--no way for users to warehouse their own data. Therefore requiring an internet connection to access your own data, then there will be few products out there with microSD cards and the storage you buy will be all you have unless you want to store your information on remote servers "cloud" to be accessed only if you have a web connection.
To voice your opinion about microSD cards you can email [email protected] and input. The more people who input on wanting them to continue to use microSD cards/slots in their future products the better chance they will keep the technology. I know this is a matter of choice and everyone feels differently about it, but, if you value having microSD please contact Samsung.

If there do not provide what I would consider ample storage I would just move to another manufactures device that did or still used external storage.
To be clear, though, the article is not about Samsung discontinuing microSD support on its devices. It does not address that.
The article says that Samsung is going to stop making microSD cards. I don't know that I've bought Samsung flash in a microsd package - I may have, but there will continue to be other vendors.

Not saying that either but best to be safe than sorry. Lot easier to install a custom rom from a external SD then using your laptop to always side-load them.

This has little or no bearing on removable MicroSD support on Samsung devices. They probably don't make batteries, yet they still make phones that use batteries (and therefore "giving money to another vendor").
The computer memory market in general is incredibly competitive, and not horribly profitable. I didn't even know Samsung made MicroSD cards to begin with. Maybe its just me, but they never seemed like a big player in the memory market (like SanDisk, Kingston, etc.), so its not surprising to see them exit it.
Yes, there is some trend to embedded memory on tablets and phones (at least on iPhones, HTC, and some other brands). But as long as there is some demand for removable MicroSD support, Samsung will probbaly continue to offer it. They seem to be carving a niche for themselves in the mobile market, by offering features lacked by other brands.

Its ridiculously easy to load a ROM onto embedded memory by mounting USB, either via recovery or just in the Android OS itself. Not any more complicated than loading a ROM onto a removable MicroSD card using a card reader.
I use the Samsung "Pro" microSD cards and prefer them over the Sandisk, but it seems that Samsung hasn't really been very aggressive in marketing these products. As far as other Samsung memory products, their 830- & 840-Series SSD drives are tops. I prefer them over the Crucial and Sandisk SDDs as well. I think Samsung makes the bulk of their memory profits from large OEM contracts for on-board memory, such as for Apple iPhone, etc.
As far as Samsung eliminating the mSD card slot on their future devices, that would certainly be a bummer IMO, but only time will tell if this becomes a reality.

Samsung responded to my email. They said they are researching the source of that article statement and that it would be something they would announce to customers. They, of course, appreciated the input and forwarded the inquiry to the appropriate department for clarity. So writing does help and they did respond. One thing it did, was let them know someone appreciated having microSD cards & slots.

64GB Version

Is it in the works? I really want a 64GB version. 32GB is not enough for me. Keep running out of space.
Also:
I'm pissed off that Google intentionally kept us from upgrading, doing the same shady crap Apple does, exploiting consumers and stealing from them with the business model. by intentionally not adding expandable storage and charging more for higher memory.
I'm disappointed that Galaxy Tab 7 still isn't close to the performance of Nexus 7. (dual core, etc.) I would gladly pay more for a device which had the same performance and looks of Nexus 7 but with external SDXC slot.

Thanks for the tip, didn't know about that section.
As for complaining, I can complain from an ethical standpoint.
Don't really think I would consider that unethical.
More memory = higher cost for manufacture.
Same thing as buying a 500gb hard drive vs 1 tb.
Also you can use a flash drive with an adapter

Not true.
More memory does Not = higher cost for manufacturer.
Put in 16GB and add an SD card slot. Then consumers can decide if they want to buy extra memory which is MUCH CHEAPER than the "upgrade" to the 32GB closed device.
Didn't you know this?
Google has no justification except Apple's - intentional consumer exploitation to make a profit.
The logic that Google has a 0-profit margin is irrelevant. Because if they were really not trying to make a profit, then they'd let us upgrade to as much storage as we want.
I don't think so about a 64gb version. The Nexus supports USB thumb drives using OTG cable. They make OTG microUSB-microSD adapters.
Google is pushing their cloud storage services so a 64gb would not be in their best interest.
Plus what do you need 64gb of data for use at all times? You don't need to carry a whole movie or music collection everywhere you go. If you're going on a trip then throw what you need on there. I have never gotten a low storage message on 32gb.

First off, I'm NEVER buying cloud. EVER. I'm not even going to get into my reasons for this.
Second, USB is not practical. Then you've got this thing hanging off the end. We don't want that.
Third, ideally I'd like to have my full ebook and audiobook collection as well as music collection and videos too available on my device. I can connect to my home PC filesystem when at home, but when I'm away I don't want to have to stream data over a network. I want the data on my device.
By the way, SDXC supports up to 2TB SD cards. Obviously 2TB SD is not out yet, but it has the upwards capability.
I get low storage on my 32GB daily. I started getting it shortly after buying the device. Because I do tons of stuff and have TONS of data that I WANT on my device. It's what I want, you can't argue with what I want.
I would like terabytes worth, but since that's not possible I at least want to be able to CHOOSE if I want to upgrade the device to the maximum memory possible - which by the way is currently a 256GB SD card.
In 2009, almost 5 years ago now, Wired talked about how 2TB micro SDXC card is coming soon. So it's on the horizon.

If what you want is more storage, and you are not willing to argue what you want, I guess I have only one question for you.
Why did you buy a 32GB tablet, knowing full well that it has no removable storage and you refuse to use cloud storage? You knew it wouldn't be enough storage yet you bought it knowing this and then complain. I don't get it, unless I'm missing something.
I could be wrong, but I think Google or Asus would have to pay some type of licensing fee if they wanted to include a microsd card slot. I think that was their reasoning for not having it and the cloud of course.

Maybe instead of spending your time complaining you can learn to mod the device. Someone modded a GS3 to hold 128gb or something like that.
Oh wait I know what your reply will be... "But it's MY money and I should be able to spend it to buy what I WANT."
I'm just letting you know that you sound like a spoiled kid. You are entitled to your opinion and whatever but idk if you're using your time wisely.

Is it in the works? I really want a 64GB version. 32GB is not enough for me. Keep running out of space.

I'm pissed off that Google intentionally kept us from upgrading, doing the same shady crap Apple does, exploiting consumers and stealing from them with the business model. by intentionally not adding expandable storage and charging more for higher memory.

At least included left USB-OTG support.
Get a meenova if you want some unobtrusive sdcard expansion.

OTG isn't working on Android 4.3, it's a bug (reported by Nexus Media Importer), but it works fine in recovery.

Bro, FHD takes space. I'm with OP. I am having to transcode my BD rips to get more than 3 to fit. What if those aren't the three I end up wanting to watch while on travel?

Hm, sounds like your needs are not met with the device you have. So, Why not research and get a device that fits your needs?
1. Your needs are that you need to store all of your ebooks, audio books, etc without putting it on cloud.
2. You realized that 32gb is not enough storage, and currently there are no plans for Google to come out with 64gb version of nexus 7. (at least that I know of)
3. You do not want an OTG cable and something hanging from the device.
4. I think it may be in your best interest to find another device that fits your needs or, make modification to your current device as some of the other members mentioned.
Good luck.
There's a microSD reader in the works that's barely larger than the card itself. That should suffice anyone. I however also agree that not offering a card slot is greedy on Google's part. Hell I'd would have still bought the 32G version if it had an expansion slot and probably stuck a 64G card in the slot. Of course I'm a storage whore.

I don't think it was that OTG isn't working but the android functionality used by Nexus Media Importer to get notified and mount the drive wasn't working.
The kernel support for OTG must be working because stickmount works.
NMI uses Android level access so doesn't need root. Stickmount uses lower level access so it needs root.

It was my fault, I use stickmount too, but it was due to my micro USB micro SD card reader couldn't read my 64gb SD card but my 32gb worked fine.

Why can't Note III have normal SD Card capability

To those of us who like to store hundreds and hundreds of full album MP3's encoded at FLAC would love to have more phone storage.
With the NOTE being such a large phone, I sure hope Samsung designs the NOTE III or IV to have "normal" SD Card capability. Not Micro. Since the normal (or next size up) cards have twice the storage capacity.
Whacha think?
Don't bother responding unless you're one of the folks who are NOT into using the Cloud and NEED massive storage space. :good:

While it would be nice to have more internal memory, you can put in a 64 GB microSD and it will likely be read (the Note 2 can already read them). MP3's don't necessarily have to reside in internal memory, so why not just use a 64GB micro-SD instead? ;The price is down to under $50 if you shop around.

won't happen !!! by the way Samsung has invented a technique which will allow sdcard to be as large as 128GB or more...and faster than current technologies..maybe wait for Samsung S 5 and Note IV maybe..I doubt if note 3 would come with it

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.
Okay, if you don't UNDERSTAND the reason behind my thread, then don't come in here and waste time. Thanks.

I already have one. But I can't fit my whole music collection on it. Even at 240kbps VBR.
I would ideally like to have about 500GB so I can carry ALL of my favorite music.

For that, you'll probably need otg. Meaning a short cable or adapter with micro USB male at one end and female USB at the other end and that will give you the ability to connect a 512GB USB to your phone!

Dude that is crazy. Wanting to 500gigs. Even if I had that much music I would carry it on a 512gig sdd or HDD. The note 2 has otg so it is easy to swap info as needed. I carry drivers and other miscellaneous because I do free troubleshooting and fixing old people's computers. I would to have 128 or even 256 SD cards but I wouldnt mind a 64gb note3 with 64gig micro SD. That would be great and less compromising.

I am 100% with you although it's not just music I would fill 500GB with.
I have a 500GB SSD on my laptop and ideally I would be able to carry ALL OF MY FILES on my smartphone. Android, unlike the other toy mobile OSes, can do practically the same things a regular PC does and the Note II's display is big enough (still small for me though) to ENABLE taking advantage of all of the Android's capabilities.
Plus, there always are Allshare Cast, HDMI out, BT keyboard and mouse and USB OTG. In a pinch, Android smartphones can perfectly act as PC replacements (god I love this stuff and god I hate the guts of crap like iOS and other such dog sh*t!). I travel a lot and live abroad for several weeks at a time, on shorter stays I am not even carrying my laptop anymore.
I am one of those who always buy the biggest internal storage variant and the biggest external memory card which fits, at the moment I have a 16GB Note II with a 64GB Samsung UHS-1 card, if 64GB or 32GB Note IIs were sold in Europe I would have gladly paid for the biggest internal storage option available (plus, of course, the biggest fitting memory card).
The cloud is GREAT but ONLY for backups and quick syncing of SMALL files across different devices. Using it in place of local storage is for non-powerusers...
I hate it so much when I am out and about and I need some less-used file which I am not keeping on my Note (for lack of space...) and I have to retrieve it via Samsung Link (which, BTW, itself is awesome).
As for your idea of using full sized SDs, I would be all for it especially since I advocate 6"/6.3" smartphones and we are saving "so much space" with "wonderful ideas" like micro and nano SIMs (...) so I believe they would fit but that's not going to happen. We are going to have to wait for the normal evolution of micro-SDs' capacity.

Maybe you should ask Sammy to make a note with multiple compact flash slots so you can put twice the storage capacity.
For me 64gb is enough. I just hope they skip 16gb models. To small for for my needs.

So get yourself a 1-terabyte Seagate Wireless Plus drive and use that (or stick it to the back of your phone). 802.11g/n, 1TB capacity, rechargeable battery and, best of all it can act as a bridge to your regular wi-fi router so you don't have to keep switching access points. Comes with a USB 3.0 adapter so you can load up your music fast. Android app available at the Play Store (some people seem to think it's Apple only. It isn't).

No kidding, Sherlock!
Exactly!
And no, I'm simply wishing it would have normal SD card capability.
And hopefully, somehow, Samsung will take notice of my request or someone else's and implement massive storage into the Note IV.
It's far too late for the Note III, and possibly too late for the IV as well. These things are already being designed well before the previous version is even released.
USB-OTG... a great solution for keeping your storage in a particular location. Not much good if I want to suddenly have access to all my storage when I'm at a friends house though.
Pshhh to most of the other posters. Only one or two get it on this thread so far.
I'm not a newb. I know what my CURRENT options are.
This thread is about hoping for future, BETTER options as far as storage goes.
And yes, multiple MicroSD cards in one phone would be a suitable alternative.
Better yet, multiple normal SD cards would be even better.

The 64GB "limit" doesn't actually exist. It's just that there are no larger capacity cards. If you align the pins or use a correct adapter you can use a 128GB card without any problems.
OP, I hope you're actually ripping the FLACs from a CD or getting them ripped, converting MP3s to FLAC won't do you any good.

I'm sure Sammy would do it, but at what cost? The unlocked model of the Note 2 is already north of $600 ... even with carrier subsidies a phone with what you want would cost at least that, probably $2000 unlocked. All the fun and games that would make it possible just isn't worth it to me. No smartphone is.

A better solution would be a phone with 2 microsd slots. Wouldn't cost a small fortune.
