Looking to buy a Nexus 7 soon! I am deciding between 8gb and 16gb. If I watch a lot of video podcasts that currently occupy 4gb at one time is 16gb my option? Also I know if I root I can hook up devices via USB. How practical is this if I want this tablet to be the one I take everywhere with me?
Lastly, I have heard brief mentions of other 7" tablets coming soon/just came out that are better than the Nexus 7. All I found was gTab 7" 2 and all that had that rivaled Nexus 7 was for $250 you only get 8gb and a microSD. Is there some tablet that is better than the Nexus 7/even worth looking at that I'm missing?

Edit: Looks like I'm going with the 16gb for sure. The question that remains is whether any other tablets rival the Nexus 7 that are coming out soon that I missed in my research besides iPad mini and gTab 7" 2.

generally i say go for 16gb. you cant do much with just 8gb. even with the root trick to run usb on the go for storage, you still can only store apps on the internal storage. so if you have lots of games, you're gonna run out of space on 8gb.

definitely go with the 16gb one. that has 13gb user available memory.
after some cwm backups, and some games and apps. you'll left about 10GB for your personal stuff such as pics, vids and songs.
i did research for other tablets as well before buying this. this is indeed the best choice.
the tab2 7 doesn even come close. forget about it. unless you want to use a 7 inch as your main phone. if not the nexus 7 really outclass it.
Is it in the works? I really want a 64GB version. 32GB is not enough for me. Keep running out of space.

I'm pissed off that Google intentionally kept us from upgrading, doing the same shady crap Apple does, exploiting consumers and stealing from them with the business model. by intentionally not adding expandable storage and charging more for higher memory.
I'm disappointed that Galaxy Tab 7 still isn't close to the performance of Nexus 7. (dual core, etc.) I would gladly pay more for a device which had the same performance and looks of Nexus 7 but with external SDXC slot.

As for complaining, I can complain from an ethical standpoint.
Don't really think I would consider that unethical.
More memory = higher cost for manufacture.
Same thing as buying a 500gb hard drive vs 1 tb.
Also you can use a flash drive with an adapter

Not true.
More memory does Not = higher cost for manufacturer.
Put in 16GB and add an SD card slot. Then consumers can decide if they want to buy extra memory which is MUCH CHEAPER than the "upgrade" to the 32GB closed device.

The logic that Google has a 0-profit margin is irrelevant. Because if they were really not trying to make a profit, then they'd let us upgrade to as much storage as we want.
I don't think so about a 64gb version. The Nexus supports USB thumb drives using OTG cable. They make OTG microUSB-microSD adapters.
Google is pushing their cloud storage services so a 64gb would not be in their best interest.
Plus what do you need 64gb of data for use at all times? You don't need to carry a whole movie or music collection everywhere you go. If you're going on a trip then throw what you need on there. I have never gotten a low storage message on 32gb.

First off, I'm NEVER buying cloud. EVER. I'm not even going to get into my reasons for this.
Second, USB is not practical. Then you've got this thing hanging off the end. We don't want that.
Third, ideally I'd like to have my full ebook and audiobook collection as well as music collection and videos too available on my device. I can connect to my home PC filesystem when at home, but when I'm away I don't want to have to stream data over a network. I want the data on my device.

If what you want is more storage, and you are not willing to argue what you want, I guess I have only one question for you.
Why did you buy a 32GB tablet, knowing full well that it has no removable storage and you refuse to use cloud storage? You knew it wouldn't be enough storage yet you bought it knowing this and then complain. I don't get it, unless I'm missing something.
I could be wrong, but I think Google or Asus would have to pay some type of licensing fee if they wanted to include a microsd card slot. I think that was their reasoning for not having it and the cloud of course.

OTG isn't working on Android 4.3, it's a bug (reported by Nexus Media Importer), but it works fine in recovery.

Bro, FHD takes space. I'm with OP. I am having to transcode my BD rips to get more than 3 to fit. What if those aren't the three I end up wanting to watch while on travel?

Hm, sounds like your needs are not met with the device you have. So, Why not research and get a device that fits your needs?
1. Your needs are that you need to store all of your ebooks, audio books, etc without putting it on cloud.
2. You realized that 32gb is not enough storage, and currently there are no plans for Google to come out with 64gb version of nexus 7. (at least that I know of)
3. You do not want an OTG cable and something hanging from the device.
4. I think it may be in your best interest to find another device that fits your needs or, make modification to your current device as some of the other members mentioned.

There's a microSD reader in the works that's barely larger than the card itself. That should suffice anyone. I however also agree that not offering a card slot is greedy on Google's part. Hell I'd would have still bought the 32G version if it had an expansion slot and probably stuck a 64G card in the slot. Of course I'm a storage whore.

I don't think it was that OTG isn't working but the android functionality used by Nexus Media Importer to get notified and mount the drive wasn't working.
The kernel support for OTG must be working because stickmount works.
NMI uses Android level access so doesn't need root. Stickmount uses lower level access so it needs root.

Then please explain to me how I was and am able to access and view all files from my flash drive via USB OTG.
It seems to me that OP has a completely unabashed and irrational sense of entitlement that clouds his ability to censor his posts to intellectual or relevant topics.

It was my fault, I use stickmount too, but it was due to my micro USB micro SD card reader couldn't read my 64gb SD card but my 32gb worked fine.

To those of us who like to store hundreds and hundreds of full album MP3's encoded at FLAC would love to have more phone storage.
With the NOTE being such a large phone, I sure hope Samsung designs the NOTE III or IV to have "normal" SD Card capability. Not Micro. Since the normal (or next size up) cards have twice the storage capacity.

While it would be nice to have more internal memory, you can put in a 64 GB microSD and it will likely be read (the Note 2 can already read them). MP3's don't necessarily have to reside in internal memory, so why not just use a 64GB micro-SD instead? ;The price is down to under $50 if you shop around.

won't happen !!! by the way Samsung has invented a technique which will allow sdcard to be as large as 128GB or more...and faster than current technologies..maybe wait for Samsung S 5 and Note IV maybe..I doubt if note 3 would come with it

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.

For that, you'll probably need otg. Meaning a short cable or adapter with micro USB male at one end and female USB at the other end and that will give you the ability to connect a 512GB USB to your phone!

Dude that is crazy. Wanting to 500gigs. Even if I had that much music I would carry it on a 512gig sdd or HDD. The note 2 has otg so it is easy to swap info as needed. I carry drivers and other miscellaneous because I do free troubleshooting and fixing old people's computers. I would to have 128 or even 256 SD cards but I wouldnt mind a 64gb note3 with 64gig micro SD. That would be great and less compromising.

I am 100% with you although it's not just music I would fill 500GB with.
I have a 500GB SSD on my laptop and ideally I would be able to carry ALL OF MY FILES on my smartphone. Android, unlike the other toy mobile OSes, can do practically the same things a regular PC does and the Note II's display is big enough (still small for me though) to ENABLE taking advantage of all of the Android's capabilities.
Plus, there always are Allshare Cast, HDMI out, BT keyboard and mouse and USB OTG. In a pinch, Android smartphones can perfectly act as PC replacements (god I love this stuff and god I hate the guts of crap like iOS and other such dog sh*t!). I travel a lot and live abroad for several weeks at a time, on shorter stays I am not even carrying my laptop anymore.
I am one of those who always buy the biggest internal storage variant and the biggest external memory card which fits, at the moment I have a 16GB Note II with a 64GB Samsung UHS-1 card, if 64GB or 32GB Note IIs were sold in Europe I would have gladly paid for the biggest internal storage option available (plus, of course, the biggest fitting memory card).
The cloud is GREAT but ONLY for backups and quick syncing of SMALL files across different devices. Using it in place of local storage is for non-powerusers...
I hate it so much when I am out and about and I need some less-used file which I am not keeping on my Note (for lack of space...) and I have to retrieve it via Samsung Link (which, BTW, itself is awesome).
As for your idea of using full sized SDs, I would be all for it especially since I advocate 6"/6.3" smartphones and we are saving "so much space" with "wonderful ideas" like micro and nano SIMs (...) so I believe they would fit but that's not going to happen. We are going to have to wait for the normal evolution of micro-SDs' capacity.

Maybe you should ask Sammy to make a note with multiple compact flash slots so you can put twice the storage capacity.
For me 64gb is enough. I just hope they skip 16gb models. To small for for my needs.
I don't do cloud computing because I don't have internet access everywhere.
Anyways I also heard and read about a person who modified his note 2 to have 288gb

So get yourself a 1-terabyte Seagate Wireless Plus drive and use that (or stick it to the back of your phone). 802.11g/n, 1TB capacity, rechargeable battery and, best of all it can act as a bridge to your regular wi-fi router so you don't have to keep switching access points. Comes with a USB 3.0 adapter so you can load up your music fast. Android app available at the Play Store (some people seem to think it's Apple only. It isn't).

What kind of thread is this really? From the title, it sounds like you have already established that the note 3 doesn't support "normal sd card" and then you say I hope it'll have normal sd card..... Makes a lot of sense.

And hopefully, somehow, Samsung will take notice of my request or someone else's and implement massive storage into the Note IV.
It's far too late for the Note III, and possibly too late for the IV as well. These things are already being designed well before the previous version is even released.
USB-OTG... a great solution for keeping your storage in a particular location. Not much good if I want to suddenly have access to all my storage when I'm at a friends house though.

This thread is about hoping for future, BETTER options as far as storage goes.
And yes, multiple MicroSD cards in one phone would be a suitable alternative.
Better yet, multiple normal SD cards would be even better.

Why would a bigger SD card physically have any impact on what can be read by the phone? Samsung's devices support exFAT and a 64GB max SD card. It's not the micro (vs. standard) SD card that's imposing that limitation. Some other manufacturer's devices don't support exFAT at all and can only handle a max 32GB micro SD card.

The 64GB "limit" doesn't actually exist. It's just that there are no larger capacity cards. If you align the pins or use a correct adapter you can use a 128GB card without any problems.
OP, I hope you're actually ripping the FLACs from a CD or getting them ripped, converting MP3s to FLAC won't do you any good.

I'm sure Sammy would do it, but at what cost? The unlocked model of the Note 2 is already north of $600 ... even with carrier subsidies a phone with what you want would cost at least that, probably $2000 unlocked. All the fun and games that would make it possible just isn't worth it to me. No smartphone is.

$1400 more for a SD card slot compared to microSD card slot... sounds legit
A better solution would be a phone with 2 microsd slots. Wouldn't cost a small fortune.

Do I have to pay for GeForce Now to Stream my games from a gaming PC ? if not what am I paying for in Geforce now ?

For me the purchase was totally worth the price. I opted for the pro bundle with the remote control and stand. Even with the add-ons, for me, the cost was still acceptable. With the new Marshmallow update, it makes it easier to format a micro SD card for internal storage, so you can get the less expensive 16gb version and just drop in a 128GB micro SD.
There is no real difference if you are using it in the UK. If you plan to subscribe to GeForce Now, there is not difference in content from the US.
You do not need to pay for a GeForce Now account to stream your PC games. You will just need to have a compatible Nvidia graphics card on your PC.
I don't have popcorn installed, so I am unable to comment on it.
If you do get it...consider updating if only for the ability to format a micro SD for internal storage.
Shield TV has Chrome cast built in so you can "Mirror" your desktop by casting it from the Chrome browser via a chrome extension.

No, you only have to pay if you want to stream games from Nvidia's cloud gaming service. Streaming from your own PC is free, but your PC must have an Nvidia graphics card.
If you want to remotely control your PC from your Shield then Teamviewer should work, but I haven't tried it.

Worth it.
I would go with the 16GB version and get a 128 or 200GB SD Card. It takes less time to change firmwares if you are into that. I have the 500GB and just to root it you need to unlock it. This process takes about 2 hours. But on the 16GB it takes a lot less time. Around 5 mins. Huge difference. Plus with Android 6.0 and adoptive storage the 16GB +128GB is a lot better managed since essentially you have more space locally to add games. Some of my games are about 2GB. They add up quick.
That being said, I wish I went with the 16 GB.
As for for the HUB. It is nice for $8 a month(3 month free trial).
The reviewers say "It is like having Netflix for games". Kind of true. True you do have many free games to choose from but there are many that cost big money. Some games are PC games and some are Android(Google Play).
Take for instance LEGO Jurassic park. It is $40 on the game HUB. And $5 in the Market. The HUB version is CO-OP and the Market version is not. I have not done much streaming to local PC but found it for $12 online. If you do not have an nVidia card there alternatives. I just have not took the time to experiment. I do know the alternatives do work. Sometimes just as good as the nVidia solution.
Another is Star Wars: Knight of the Republic Through HUB/Google Market $9.99 or get it for $0 through Amazon Under Ground.
Keep in mind a lot of games on Amazon Underground that are free mean they are free. That means the in-game items are free as well if noted. E.g. Sonic Dash and Beach Buggy Racing. Just look for the Actually Free banner on the game icon. The Actually Free means you can level up or get better gear and not have to pay for it. One caveat. You may be saving online to the Amazon Eco system instead the Amazon Eco sytem. No biggie if you know this ahead of time.
And as for connecting to the shield remotely some good choices are:
1. As said before TeamViewer. This is good if you get it to work. I had it working on Stock and StockRestyle but something happened and I no longer can get it to work. It does work on Full Android 1.2. Image quality is pretty good.
2. Droidmote works too but use an earlier version. The newer version will not see your mouse or keyboard actions. Image quality is so so(for me).
3. Vysor works pretty good but you will need ADB on and your Shield connected via the USB cable to your PC with the correct drivers loaded. You can also share a web link to a system outside of your network and connect that way. This seems like a temporary connection. Image quality is pretty good.
4. RemoDroid works too. As far as I can tell you need to be on the same network. You can connect to shield form another Droid of with a PC using the IP or the recommended JavaClient.
The Shield TV is great.
But take these in consideration
1. Do I want to plug and play? This works for that but you will find out that the options may be limited for you if you you like to time.
2. This is a powerful little box and if you want to go further than stock and are willing to try things the playing field will get bigger.
Research. Then research some more.
Check out Stock Restyle and Full android Marshmallow. Read everything. Some things are easy to do, some things are spread out and others impossible to know about if you have not read every post. This is just the nature of a message board. I am sure someone will put all the tips and tricks in a #1 post or sticky somewhere.
These of course is my opinions. Any products and prices are my experience. I do not want to push anyone in to any direction not of their choosing.

I always wanted to get myself a shield tv but I have a couple of questions:
I'm going to get the 16gb model and connect a spare 120gb 850 evo ssd I have laying around to it's usb port, would I be able to use this drive as internal storage?
I'm importing it from the us and I would need a us to eu adapter to plug it in, does the power brick support 240V?
How well does the game streaming work? I'm planning on just directly connecting the shield tv to my laptop via ethernet and streaming games that way, would that work?
How is the audio quality via the controllers headphone jack? Since it's main use will be Youtube and stuff like that (and the occasional game) audio quality is rather important

The only of your questions I can answer is related to the HD space. You can make the drive internal with one caveat. Plex will not use the addition drive space to store metadata, even if the drive is formatted as internal. Just something to keep in mind depending on your library size and if you want previews and other meta info populated into your Plex library.
I still went went the 16gb model BC its has faster r/w speed with the flash memory, as opposed to the larger but slower HDD in the pro model, and there are reports of the large spin drives failing.
Having fancy previews and title info from Plex isn't a big deal for me, I'll just disable it if my library gets too large.
Plex will still be able to use your ssd for storage of media files and as temp space for converting files for streaming on other devices.

Well, bestbuy is being stupid af again... My dad went to the BestBuy in SF on Geary BLVD and they told him that the shield tv wasn't even announced yet (that's what the bestbuy site says as well) but you can already order it off of their site. wth?

Theres a new shield that hasnt been anounced that we only know about due to FCC filings, so maybe he thinks youre talking about that one? maybe the dont carry the original anymore?
