Hello,
I am a brand new customer that came over from AT&T to buy the HTC EVO 4G.
I have been mostly happy with the phone, but very unhappy about the 30 FPS cap on the graphics ... the Nexus One runs on the same hardware and is able to push 60FPS or more. To add insult to injury, my EVO's screen is starting to separate at the bottom of the device, which means I am going to have to either return it or exchange it for a new EVO prior to the 30 day limit. At first I was content to just exchange my EVO for a new one, but here are my concerns:
1. Are these problems going to be fixed? If I get a new EVO, will HTC/Sprint ever fix the graphics problem? Will I have another instance of hardware failure (screen separation)? Further reading on this topic here: (links removed due to XDA policy)
2. I bought and paid about $30 to have a ZAGG shield installed on the face of the EVO (lifetime warranty permanent screen protector) ... if I exchange my EVO, there is another $30 I am paying. What happens if I keep having hardware failures? Do I have to pay $30 each time to have my ZAGG shield replaced? Unacceptable!
3. Screen Responsiveness - The top part of my EVO is not very responsive, possibly due to a improperly grounded screen. Yet another reason I have to return it. Unfortunately, there are none in my area so I have to wait until they come in. Will the new one have the same problems?
4. WiFi strength on the EVO is lackluster at best. More reading here: (Link removed due to XDA policy)
5. Evo 4G is the first 4G phone - too bad you can hardly ever get 4G reception and when you do, the speed is not nearly what Sprint has advertised. This is not a dealbreaker because this phone has so many great qualities, but the speed tests that I and others have done show that the speed on the 4G is not that great, not even better than AT&T's iPhone 3GS speeds much of the time. Very sad.
I would like to say I am going to be a loyal Sprint and HTC customer for many years, but with all these issues I am seriously considering returning my phone and cancelling my service within the 30 day window.
Can you help me understand how these problems will be fixed? What is your time frame for fixing them? Are the Sprint and HTC teams even aware of these issues and are you looking into them? I have found I love Android phones now, but I can just as easily cancel my contract and move to T-Mobile who supports a wide variety of Android phones (Nexus One, anyone?). Please help me understand why it is best to stay with Sprint and HTC. I *want* to be a loyal customer, but I need to know that my concerns are being heard and addressed.
Thank you in advance for your time!
Sincerely,
Tim D.

Also - Mods - can I get verified? How do I make that happen? Thanks, Tim.

At least you didn't ***** about the 10 dollar Premium Data. That + former AT&T customer = nice letter

Thanks ... I tried to keep it as positive as I could. I have had pretty good luck getting things accomplished with EECB's that are positive. (I recently had my Dell XPS m1730 repaired out of warranty after I aired my concerns to Dell)
I hope we can find a resolution. The EVO is a GREAT phone plagued by a few problems that hopefully can be resolved one way or another.
Edit: Perhaps if some other forum members would like to write up their own letters and send them, maybe we can get some movement on this.

Pull your ZAGG screen off and then get a warranty replacement for $5 shipping. They replace it free if you replace your device.

Thank you for that tip about the ZAGG shield - I was not aware of that... I will have to wait until the last second though to make sure I actually get a new EVO from Radio Shack

Maybe if we all send nice letters, we could MAYBE at least get the source.

Bump!
Nobody else has sent an EECB? might be a good way to get some much needed attention for these problems...

I was planning to and then got side-tracked. I shall later tonight. Much thanks for bringing it to my attention again!

My only complaint is the serious lack of WIFI, and even when i do have it the speeds are terrible. also 4g isn;t official in my area but i get it sometimes 1 or 2 bars max (only in 1 spot outside my house its kinda odd). The speeds are hitting close to 4mbps for me. I hope they finish installing 4g in the boston area.

So are those all the email addresses I need to email? Are they all .com?

Well, I just EECB'd them, putting a particular slant on the issue of releasing the source. I have a gut feeling that HTC is working to do this, but it would be really nice to get a straight answer out of them. (So, be nice to HTC.)
Hello, and to whom it may concern:
Like many other potential smartphone customers, I've been looking forward to the release of the HTC EVO 4G. I've been using prepaid phones for too long and had myself set on finally becoming a Sprint customer with an EVO.
As someone who was lucky enough to get an EVO from Google I/O this year, I've been using the phone for the past three weeks or so. While the phone has almost lived up to my expectations, there is one major flaw that I find unacceptable: the artificial graphics performance cap on the phone.
At Google I/O, Google and their partners showed off many different Android phones, both new and old. Most of the higher-end phones, including HTC's own Nexus One, have great performance. Games run speedily and smoothly and the interface positively flows. That, however, is not the case with the EVO. The EVO, even with its top of the line hardware, is artificially capped at rendering 30 frames per second. I find this very unfortunate, as a side by side comparison between the Nexus One, EVO, and iPhone will show that the Nexus and iPhone run their respective UIs and games much more smoothly than the EVO. I expected 3D performance to be a selling point with such a gorgeous phone—I guess not.
I, along with many others, have contacted HTC about this issue. HTC's official line is that the 30 FPS cap was intended to "improve battery life" and they have no plans to change this. While this is disappointing, it is HTC's right to build their firmware how they want. However, I ask HTC: please make this fact more public. This cap was a rude surprise to developers and has made many of them unhappy, even leading to some phone returns, as evidenced by the discussion on prominent phone dev boards: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=620. (I've come close to wanting a refund—but my phone was free, so I have no hard feelings.)
In addition, I'd like to ask HTC to expedite the release of your Android kernel source so that developers like me can remove this cap. I'm sure many others will do the same, even if it does void their warranty and is not officially supported. It would be nice to have a phone that actually works as advertised.
HTC makes good phones; there's no reason to artificially limit the EVO from becoming HTC's best.
Thank you for your time and for listening to my concerns.

GREAT JOB. Very nicely written.
On another note, I have been reading about what may be Sprint's 2nd 4G phone, the Samsung Galaxy S Pro... I am thinking of returning my EVO and waiting for the Galaxy to drop... too many problems with the EVO. The sad thing is I have to do it within the 30 day money back timeframe, so I am quickly going to be coming up on a hard stop.... ARGH!

Instant response: f**k yeah!
EDIT: Got an reply from Dan Hesse's office saying that they'll reply w/more info within the next day or so.
Hello _______,
Thank you for providing us with the request for the sourc code for your EVO 4G, to which I understand you are entitled. I also understand that in the legal information of the phone it says to contact Customer Service with this request, although that is not entirely correct. From Technical Support, we can only pass along your request to the appropriate department, and as they do have your request it will be posted. This is not a gambit of any sort nor a desire to keep anything from our users; as to why it is not available yet, I do not know, nor do my supervisors. If we at Technical Support did have access to either send out the code or post it on the website, I would be more than happy to do so as I understand that you are anxious for it and I would love to be able to provide it.
I agree; the phone is great and I am fairly excited myself to see what you and the rest of the developers come up with.
The request has been made to the appropriate department, and when the code is posted it will be available at developer.htc.com. I apologize that it is not available at this very moment, and I thank you for your patience in this matter. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us again. You can find additional support at support forums at community.htc.com. There is also a customer satisfaction survey for you to take if you are interested.

That was from mid-tier customer support, so we'll also see if Sprint/HTC exec level people reply. Also, time to wait for the source code.

EVO 4g Already Rooted...LOL! :)

Yep, looks like some EVO's were given to anyone attending Googles I/O event and its already been rooted. Good news for 99% of people in this forum, I know you are all switching Just thought I would share!
<3 all the dev's out there!
"We're still a good dozen days away from its public release, but the Evo 4G has already been given a rooting makeover. Google dished out Evo handsets to all the lucky (so lucky!) attendees of its blowout I/O 2010 event, and a trio of those visitors rolled up their sleeves and decided to get down and intimate with the phone over the weekend. The product of their labor is at this stage just a few screenshots and a blurry video after the break, but fear not, we're sure details of the hack will be forthcoming promptly."

im not sure that EVERYONE will be going to the EVO ... yes its a nice phone and love the size of the screen , but looks like Sprint is going to use AT&T tacktics.. i am told you will need to pay for 4g service ( per month ) even if you dont want it! another words , you will need to purchase a plan that will allow the EVO to work and that service will cost more money per month ...
as for me i would rather have the NExus One but we shall see what happens ..
I really wish that Sprint didn't release such amazing phones within a year range that are near the same, besides hardware specs...
And on topic now, that's amazing! Hopefully like someone said, that can be used towards our rooting!
Pisses me off that this is coming so soon, I have until early october until I qualify for a $75 credit since that was when our heros were released. Hopefully there will be some equally impressive or better phones coming to sprint by the end of the year?

This was my first thought too... The EVO is running 2.1 correct? it has been rooted, which should open the door for the rooting of the Official version running on the Hero.
I hope the Dev's stick around and support the Hero for a while yet as the phone is awesome, especially with the Newest Rom's.
Happy Trails!
Sheesh WRONG SECTION!...

This is good news but this should be moved the the general section tbh.

Its $10 additional to whatever ur paying now... not really a big change in anything... just like when people bought their hero's, it required a certain plan.. its the same thing.. u gotta pay for the 4G service..
(and would people stop wasting your time to post "wrong section".. let a mod see it or figure it out... no need in 20 people sayin the same ****)
Just because the Evo was able to be rooted doesn't mean that it should help with the Hero 2.1 Case in point.....even after the hero was initially rooted, how long did it take for the eris to follow suit even though it was running the same 1.5?
I'm not sure if I really want the EVO or if it's just wanting to be on the cutting edge... it's kinda useless to me where I live because there are 0 plans to bring 4g here anytime soon, but they're bringing it to town 60 miles away. Bad timing in my honest opinion for this phone, because only select markets get to benefit from it's main feature, 4g.

Its the same thing as when the G1 came to T-mobile. It was their first 3g phone, and they had almost no 3g coverage at the time. Sprint has been rolling out 4g for a while. It makes sense in the areas that have it or are slated to have it soon. Plus, the phone itself is amazing on 3g, so really, I don't see why it matters. The 10 dollars sucks if all you get is 3g, but whatever, still cheaper than anyone else, and you do no longer have a 5 GB limit.
Hopefully Sprint in its infinite wisdom doesn't delay the release to update these in a big effin hurry before they're in our hot little hands. Not that there's precedent for that, but ...
I know there were other devs with this ROM waiting to show they had root as well just for that reason. Oh well. crosses fingers!!!
EVO looks bad ass, but it breaks my heart to see that they don't even have any set plans of 4G where I live. Hopefully sprint puts out another snapdragon that can hold me over till 4g spreads a little more, I don't wanna pay 10 extra bucks a month for service I can't utilize.

Well my wife and i got our HUGE tax return today and im trying to talk her into letting my sell my hero and buy the EVO. Problem is as of june 1st my company is closing down so ill be outta work. Decisions, decisions.

An HTC rant

To start off, I'd like to let you guys know that I'm a diehard Android and HTC fan. I have the ADP1, the Nexus One, and now the Evo. I was extremely excited about the Evo on launch day (like many of you). Now that much of this excitement has been killed by the recent plague of Evo problems, I'd like to share my concerns:
On my first Evo, I had some pretty bad light leaking from the soft keys. I returned that unit, only to receive what appears to be a refurbished unit. (Good luck trying to explain what light leaking is to the Sprint reps. The lady rolled her eyes at me trying to convince her this problem does in fact exist.) The new unit still had some very slight leakage, and the kickstand was also scratched up. I decided to suck it up and live with it, but the next few days made things worse.
Then we learned about the 30fps cap, touchscreen input lag, the screen lifting up, poor wifi reception, and probably still more to come...Seeing as HTC hasn't even acknowledged these issues, I don't think there will be a fix within my 30 day grace period. As much as I love what this phone COULD be, I'm stuck with what it really is; a bunch of high end components carelessly thrown together...
But not all is lost! HTC still has a chance to fix this! There are still about 20 days before I (and many others) return the Evo. I really hope HTC manages to fix this, whether its through a recall, or something else. I beg of you HTC: Fix your flagship device! It's sinking! (See what I did there?)
Thank god for 30 day full return of all money paid am I right?
P.S. you GOTTA know any 1st gen device you buy is gonna have hardware problems to be ironed out. Don't want to deal with them? Wait for the 2nd gen device a year from now
Example: Theres no way in hell I would buy an iPad due to it being a 1st gen device. I already knew before it came out that it would have hardware problems...

Of the things you listed, defective wifi and the screen lifting up are the only items that are actual defects and neither are present on my Evo. Additionally, my wifi reception is awesome, so I don't agree that that there is a global issue there either.
Actual defects are covered for 1 full year, which is about 6-8 months longer than I intend to keep the Evo (pending what is released). If my screen starts peeling or my wifi actually stops working I will RMA it for another.
I just want to suggest that maybe some of the "issues" users experience are beyond what is reasonable. What do you think?

None of these issues are particularly bad by themselves. But they are all quickly adding up to signs of poor quality control over at HTC.

I heard that when you activate any new phone, your upgrade eligibility bumps up to that date. I got this from a Sprint rep while planning to buy my Evo. So I won't be eligible for another year.
I agree with the guy on this board that said not to buy any first gen device, because most of the time it will have problems to work out. I haven't experienced any of the problems that some people seem to have, obviously out of hundreds of thousands there will be some problems and HTC and Sprint will deal with them as they come, hopefully in a timely manner.
I wouldn't return your EVO. Its a decent phone and good piece of hardware.

My eligibility date still shows 10/01/10. You can check yours here. I will wait one billing cycle and check again to be sure. If not, then my gf is getting a used Evo to replace her Hero and I'll get whatever the next thing is.
I agree with the OP and about to do the same before my 30 days are up.
I just can't see the EVO running almost every game i put on it slower than the N1 and not to mention some games are just too choppy to play.
HTC had the exact same issue with the HD2 and they NEVER fixed it.
I hope that due to all the media attention the fps issue received, HTC will fix it in a timely manner.
The phone is great and all, but the N1 just beats it for now. at least for me.

Just a certifiable chicken
but what makes anyone think the HTC will be rolling out a 2nd gen EVO? It seems like every year they come out with completely new devices with different names and whatnot. Granted most internals would be the same but overall, the devices are new.
does htc just have a bad habit of using poor adhesive?
n1 from reports, touch pro from experience and now the evo. how many other htc phones have the problem?
i doubt i'll ever buy another htc phone again - heck before 26 days i may not even have this one anymore.

Well, within a few days tons of iPad customers reported issues with Wi-Fi, which Apple confirmed.
I have read issues with some iPads overheating. (Just run a quick google search for 'ipad issues' and you'll see plenty of problems).
More recently, Apple/AT&T managed to leak 100,000+ customers email addresses.
*********************************************************
Is the iPad a poorly made/designed product? NO. Though I do not own one, I will be the first to admit it's a fantastic device.
However, just like any other 1st-gen piece of hardware sold to the masses, issues are bound to crop up, and the EVO is no exception.

That was not my experience. I upgraded in May 09 to a Samsung Rant, then bought a Touch/Vogue a few months later off ebay and activated it on my account but I was still able to upgrade as of May 2010 to my happy little Evo.

[Q] Manufacturer Support?

So I hate my Hero, A, because it is slow, and B, because it is stuck on 2.1 forever. So I have been looking at the Evo and the Epic, and the other related phones, and here is my question, what is the support going to be like? I know that every time a new phone comes out, the manufacturers seem to forget about the old ones, and for no technical reason, the MyTouch 3G is getting Froyo after all. So one of the things I am looking at with my next phone is that it will be supported for the full two years, the Hero only made it 6 months, so I know that seems like a lot, but I honestly don't think it is too much to ask. If you sell a phone with a 2 year contract, you should support it for at least 2 years, as long as technically possible. So without a vanilla Android phone available on Sprint, which of the two phones do you guys think will be supported with updates longer? I have seen that sources close to Google said the Galaxy S phones will be upgraded to 3.0, but they didn't mention the EVO, even though it meets the spec requirements. Would it be waiting until the end of the year for whatever comes then? Or is just that buying me until December of next year instead of August? Thanks.
No phone will ever be supported for 2 years...some countries even have 3 year contracts as standards...The contract is unrelated to the phone you buy...
The manufacturer warranty is 1 year for all of them...past that you can't really expect them to issue updates for it...that is why we have a community...
You have to remember that the manufacturer is not earning money off your contract, only from the sale and if they have their apps in there, those as well...
The one who is forcing you into the contracts are the carriers...no matter how much you may think the US is a free open country..it is not...out of all the countries we have the most locking of phones and other things...
You are not forced to sign a new contract..you can always pay the full price of the phone up front..the contract just gives you a discount...
Ok, while I will admit all that you said is true, my example is the iPhone. Apple puts out a phone, and continues issuing updates for it, even you you are probably out of your 3G contract now, you can still upgrade to OS 4.0, you won't get all of the features, and it is debatable whether you should have those features, but at least you get part of the update. I don't understand why that can't happen on Android. Even the MyTouch 3G will have had support for over a year. The Hero on the other hand, got its first and only upgrade after about 6 months. Why can't we have some arrangement like that with a non-Google phone? I mean, just give me a full year of updates and I will be happy, if those updates are reasonably prompt, as with the EVO and Froyo. Will that continue with the EVO, or the Galaxy S when we move to Gingerbread?

Well iPhone is different..Apple actually gets paid a portion of your contract...not to mention all app revenue goes to them as well...
But in case of the Hero..it kinda came at a bad time...it was the point where the device specs skyrocketed and Android was moving fast in development..not to mention the Hero was already an out dated phone before it even came out..US was just slow at getting devices on the shelves...recently it seemed to have picked up..before it used to be 6 month - a year before it got in US shelves but was already all over the world...nowadays we get them 1-3 month or so...
Once 3.0 hits Android also slow down a bit in their release cycle...
Most likely you will get 1 year support around these days..and afterwards it will be community support for life ...
Maybe I am slightly bitter, especially that the poor Hero support came after my first HTC phone, the Touch Pro, broke on 4 separate occasions, the first two were within 30 days, so Sprint replaced it, but the 3rd time it took 3 weeks to send to HTC and get it back, after a maze of tech support calls. Then I upgrade to the Hero, and don't get supported.
But what you are saying all makes sense, so I hope either way we get more updates, even if they have to be delivered by the Dev community.

So does mine, thanks to Darchstar and all of his fellow developers. And I can't thank them enough for that, because if it weren't for them, I would have thrown this phone out of my car at high speed off a cliff long ago. But it shouldn't be up to developers to support a year old phone. Especially when it is obviously capable of running newer firmware. And because they don't officially support it, these 2.2 ROMs will never be as good as ones with the official HTC base.

Correct, I just think it is the right thing to do when you sell a phone. Support it for two years. Sprint pays HTC for the phone, and we pay Sprint for the phone and service, so it just makes sense that they Sprint should make sure their customers are supported for at least the two year contract whenever technically possible.
One year of support might be feasable. Htc doesn't want to waste resources supporting old hardware, sprint doesn't want you to reach end of contract. This is why they give upgrade pricing after one year in exchange for 2yr contract agreement. Android platform + this communit have given me the ability to keep a phone for 2yrs with minimal discomfort.

Wait a second... Why the heck would you EVER have to send the phone in to HTC? If it's under warranty, Sprint repair stores handle it for you. If there's no repair stores near you, care cross-ships you out a new (or refurb) phone. You shouldn't have to be without a phone for more than a day, max.

Because it was about 6 months after we bought it, and it we don't buy the warranties. So we called Sprint, and they told us that the only thing they would do is sell us a new phone for full retail, and specifically asked about a loaner or something, and they said that was only for people with warranties. They said the only thing we could do is send it to HTC, so that is what we had to do.
As a rebuttal, you can put 2.2 on a hero, and have everything work. I'm doing that now to get used to not having sense. Sure it doesn't top the charts and 3d games suck on it, but there are plenty 2d games on the market that work fine, you can watch movies that look and sound fine on it if you take the time to convert them properly. Plus, I haven't had any issues with lag, especially with the keyboard. The stock android one us much better than htc's ime.apk in that aspect. And it probably has to do with the haptic feedback. I typed this on my phone and it doesn't feel like a chore.

Thanks again gTen, and rufflez, I have already said how much I love the devs here and on other forums, and all the work they put into the platform, but the operating system is always the best when based on official kernels and and drivers. And it shouldn't be up to the community to support the devices after such a short time. They should improve on work done by the manufacturer, but they shouldn't be solely responsible for the device's advancements.

3G upload cap fix to be rolled out this week!

Taken from the official Sprint thread here:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/43883?start=540&tstart=0&reqsorting=dec
"Good news - an update will be released tomorrow 9/30. It will be rolled out over a 4 day period so not everyone will get it on day 1.
I will have the standard MR information (fixes included, rollout schedule, etc) available tomorrow morning and will post it in a new featured thread."
AWESOME!
yea, the day after the 30 days is up for people that bought on the first day, so not really that awesome, lets just pray it fixes the problem. I'm not really optomistic to be honest. Just to convenient to hold off like this.
Second update since release. I do have to admit, it's kind of nice to see Samsung actually supporting a phone for once.
This is great news! And we are getting Cyanogen Mod 6! I couldn't be happier. :-D

While I understand where you're coming from, I agree with styckx that it's just good to see them doing something about it. I do wish they'd acted on this more quickly, but better to roll out a fix now than wait months to release one or not release one at all.
It's crazy to hear people complain about updates from Samsung from my perspective. I'm a Touch pro 1 owner that basically received no updates from Sprint/HTC. And previous to that was the Mogul that went months without an advertised feature (Rev A/GPS). I'm way more wary about HTC than Samsung.
Epic ordered finally here. Was waiting for 10/1.

It stems from Samsung's history, mainly with the T-Mobile Behold 2. They advertised that it would be getting Android 2.x then never delivered on their promise and stranded users with 1.6. While HTC has probably been the best manufacturer in terms of supporting their Android phones.
I had a launch day Hero, and I don't think support was the fastest for that either. Most everything I did through XDA and androidforums.<---alot faster than waiting for the manufacturer/carrier to roll out and update.
Just my thoughts...

I've read a lot about Samsung after purchasing my Samsung Moment. I found they had a nice history of let downs and lack of support. Then the Moment went on and on without a mention of a fix, or patch, or anything. That was a complete lemon of a phone (data lock ups and unfixable GPS) that Samsung all but abandoned less than a year after launch and still to this day the Moment forums are mainly filled with people trying to fix data lock ups and the GPS. It's ashame really.
Epic was going to be my last run with Samsung, and despite some bumps in the road I've been pleased so far as they are at least taking initiative with this phone it seems. I personally think they have no choice. It's one thing to piss off 1 carriers customers, and another to piss off multiple carriers customers by not supporting a phone.
Hope the support continues.
so you guys are excited that they put out an update that fixed nothing and screwed up the phone? thats great, all it meant is I had to go and uninstall the mediahub crap so my battery life didn't suffer, the gps issue remains, the upload issue will likely remain after this update as well. so that really equates to them doing nothing in my eyes.
I've never experienced a upload cap on my phone. Does anyone know if this update includes other fixes other than just the 3g upload cap?

Have you ran the Speed Test app on 3G? I've yet to see anyone get over a stable 150kbps (sure it bounces upwards towards 200 on occasion but then levels out). From working in hosting it shows exact throttling behavior, as it uploads it jumps past the 150 mark to around 170-180 and then down to a stable 150 almost immediately. It's hard to believe this to be some sort of coincidence since it's able to be replicated in many different 3G markets across the country.

Lol, mine actually goes to like 6000+ for a little while, then dips down to under 50 kbps. Yes, under 50! I have some SpeedTest results that have come in under 20 kbps upload!
Even my 3G speed is horrible. Never over 500 download. I'm looking forward to this. Luckily I am usually either in a WiFi zone or a 4G zone.

It may seem to be throttling behavior. Ultimately though, those of us aware of how a data radio and associated software *actually works* know full well that it's because the dwarf hamsters spinning in their wheels are, in fact, unionized. Because of the upload tragedy of 2009, in which millions of poor hamsters perished on the Touch Pro 2 because of faulty speed governors installed in the cages, strict regulations were put in place for the Epic, dictating that no hamster may run unsupervised in their wheels, and that they must trade off shifts every 128kB with their spotting partners. It's this switching that causes the fluctuations you observe during the speedtest runs. You may have noticed a bit more heft in the Epic vs say, the Captivate. You might mistakenly believe it's the keyboard, when in fact it is the added weight of the supervisory hamsters.
Another shortfall in communications speed arises because Samsung, to save weight from the added hamsters, decided to use smoke signals as a databus between the CPU and the baseband processor. This was chosen over the "flashing mirrors" approach due to cost and weight issues. This compounds the upload cap problem because as the phone rests in your pocket, it accumulates moisture. The soot particles from the smoke then seed rainclouds, which can interrupt the dataflow between baseband and CPU as the receiver operators duck for cover at a nearby tavern.
So, you see, this is clearly a compound problem. Obviously, this week's update will include a staff of more hamsters, more wheels, and dehumidifiers, all so your phone can shuttle data more efficiently. This is a brilliant feat of engineering, I might add. So, expect your phone to weigh more by the end of the week, though how much more, nobody knows. And please, do post the truth about how the phone's internals really work, punzada... anything else would be a blatant disservice to the hard-working bit-crunchers in your phone.
^^ wat
Also from that thread:
Desi,
I'm on the phone right now with tier 2 support to try to find out what's in the update because this is my last day if I'm going to return the phone and I'm being told that they don't see anything about the battery life, GPS, or this data upload issue in this release.
I know you said that you're putting that information up tomorrow, but I have to make a decision today.
The tech is saying there is NO FIX FOR THE CAP ISSUE FROM SAMSUNG yet or anything to improve the battery.

I guess we will have to see if it actually fixes anything. But it seems like tier 2 is at least finally aware of (or admitting to) the problem with the upload. Doesn't sound like there will be anything for the battery or GPS though.

Battery and GPS are (for me, anyway) easy workarounds. 3G upload cap is what it is; there's no getting around it other than using wi-fi or 4G (which I can also usually do, but not everyone can).
I'll be happy to have that upload cap fixed if for no other reason than people will quit using it as an excuse to post "should I return my Epic for an Evo?" threads here and elsewhere.
My feeling is the amount of pressure on Sprint had an affect on how hard they pushed samsung.
That and the fact that until a few days ago users were being told for weeks running that no one but they were reporting the problem exacerbated the problem.
So it s a cause for celebration that they are pushing out a fix, but I don't think it is at all established that this would have occurred so soon if it where not for all the noise.
As far as GPS, not only are there problems, but the "advice" given by Sprint: use the unrelated "wireless networking" is an absolute laughable and patronizing dodge.
As others have noted, working around with cold starts or manual resets does fix the main issue.
I have been in contact with the moderator of eh Sprint forum privately some time ago, and he put me in with ADP (ADP, not ADS) on this issue. They are diagnosing it, and have not come to any conclusion other than they have seen the issue themselves.

Well. Apparently we have a voice, which is a good thing.
I'm hopeful, but I am not holding my breath. I think it is likely the vast majority of Epics were pre-ordered or bought on launch, 08/31. 30 days would be 09/30. The announcement could be an attempt to get people who bought on launch that were going to return it on the last day to keep their phones, and then when the update doesn't "may increase" or "possibly enhance" or whatever the legal gymnastics statement said, those people can't return the phone any more and Sprint isn't really under any obligation to fix it.
Whether it's an angleshoot or a genuine attempt to fix it, I am anxiously awaiting the first reports tomorrow.

Sprint is serious exposed to class action liberality, which involves not just awards, but legal costs, and more importantly really bad press.
I have a written note from ecare from last week saying no one has reported this issue. Hundreds of users seem to have been told the same thing. Not that the speeds are normal, but that they were low speeds but unique to the customer. That presents a legal liability for Sprint right here.
I think we will all know in a few days.
You guys should probably take a chill pill on the conspiracy theories already. I'm sure it would cost Sprint much less money and hassle just to fix this software issue rather than go out of their way to "conveniently" tell you that there's a "fix" that doesn't really exist but they used their "legal gymnastics" to trick you into holding onto your phone past the 30 day mark. They are a company that wishes to exist more than 2 more years, why would they go out of their way to screw you and guarantee you leave in two years when a couple of patches could save them and Samsung a ton of customers?
Its not like fixing this issue requires the recall and replacement of every phone, and them fixing this problem is not an incredibly inconvenient issue. You know why they're telling you the day before your 30 days that the update is coming? Because telling you after you return the phone wouldn't do anyone much good. Why didn't they tell you sooner? Because these things, while not impossible or some ludicrous endeavor, do take time.
I'm not even meaning to take their side really. Sure, they should have caught the issue before launch, and they should have addressed the issue in public... but if you're only gonna sign onto networks willing to do either of those things then you're not going to be purchasing a cell phone in America. I mean, Steve Job's stance on Antennagate is still "Shut up whiny babies, this issue doesn't exist, but I'll give you a free case if you shush and go back to fellating me..."

No pay day yet. This is Sammy's way of confessing they have been trying to do it their way instead of please the customer for too long.
It still remains to be seen what they actually DO about it.
We all know what pathway good intentions paved =]
The bottom line is until sammy gets the carriers in line, and froyo gets released before its 1st birthday! People will rant with good reason. Btw gingerbread has been out for like 3 months! We have a top of the line device running an os from 2009. Honestly I love the hardware but I can't handle this bad os support.

Whoever even buys another Samsung flagship phone with the belief that they learned their lesson deserves what they are going to get and shouldn't complain anymore. If you haven't realized what their intent is, which is maximum profit with the least effort, while actually making it seem like they kind of care with PR rep's that promise things that they cant' actually commit to. INB4C
My friend asked me what phone he should buy, and looked at the Galaxy S2 and the Motorola Atrix. It was a no brainer which phone was the winner. Go Atrix! Pre-ordered and waiting! He was waiting for a nice dual core phone, but after the mess he has heard from me with Samsung, he said he definitely doesn't want to go through the same thing. To be honest, this crap is making me sick to my stomach just talking about anymore, cause we've all been crapped on, and it doesn't feel nice.
I'm not surprised in the least that Samsung would think that this meaningless gesture would diffuse this issue, but I'm honestly SHOCKED that "Xda leaders" would put any thought into this. I suspect they're making money off this, somehow.
This site has lost its way badly.
At least it's a start and shows Samsung at least recognizes they've pissed off some people. It's better than what they've been doing which has been a whole lot of nothing.

And THEN Sprint will begin work on adding SprintID and a new, improved, constant Nascar streaming app, which can in no way be turned off. Oh, and HTC assassins are waiting there to shoot Noob so that they can still claim that the EVO is the flagship phone, and artificially make supply of the phone backordered to give the impression to the common consumer that it is not a giant POS. Honestly, this was my first Samsung phone in about ten years is so far, it's my last.
It's not the lack of Froyo, this is just a simple annoyance. What killed it is GPS that works like crap, barely functioning accelorometer, retarded hardcoded GPS accuracy refusal to do anything about these two issues. I have a bad feeling that the last bug isn't a bug at all, but an attempt to cover up poorly functioning GPS on this phone. If I was Colbert, I'd wag my finger at them.

Hi I'm samsungjohn, just wanted to let you guys know that I'm just using this pr to gain rank within the amsung corporation. I figured if I was able to convince everyone to stick with samsung and to keep buying samsung, that I will be soon promoted. In reality I am jus doing this for a job. I don't even own a samsung phone. I own an LG, but thank you for listening to me and allowing me to pull your strings....Public Actions speak louder than words....oh and by the way. The Truth Is What You Make It, and Who You get To Believe In It.
No worries I'm just poking fun at this all. If people have gotten offended by it then the truth lies within the offended. Lol
now if Samsung were to really/officially be changing fo the people they would skip over froyo and be the first to update every galaxy s series to gingerbread. Or at least get froyo out and gingerbread soon after.
And powers at be, feel free to delete or modify this if you like. I've already gotten past the point of anger, and this whole samsung update bs is just a joke to me now. Samsung makes great dumb phones but a smart phone is just isn't worth it.
Too late, too slow, too little.
Samsung unfortunately is still working on the feature-phone timelines. What they (and most other android phone makers, with the possible exception of HTC) seem to not quite understand is that these smartphones are true computers now, and need to be treated as such. The OS is an integral part of phone, perhaps the most important part, and people will not tolerate a company that refuses to update an OS that both has critical bugs (and yes, the GPS bug is a CRITICAL bug), and appears incapable of utilizing the hardware it's surrounded by. It's like Microsoft refusing to repair a Windows bug that kept all printers only printing in black and white. It's almost worse that the hardware is so good, and is being crippled by a poorly customized OS (like tantalus, nearby but unreachable relief is far worse than no possibility of relief at all).
It's going to take a really big step to mollify those that have been burned by this generation of samsung's smartphones. Samsung, if your listening. You've pissed off many of your most important phone buyers. These are the people who less tech-savvy people ask for advice on phones, and for every 1 XDA member offended by your apparent lack of desire to properly support your equipment, you probably lose at least 10 referral sales to companies like HTC.
My recommendation, at least open the source code for the devs to look at, and if you're having software quality problems (and that's the reason you can't get froyo out the door), invite some of the best devs to take a look at the proprietary modules that you're having problems with. Work with the community and you may maintain some degree of support for your next generation of phones. But keep trying to astroturf them, or worse yet, pull a Behold 2 on them, and watch out as your current market lead could easily change next generation.
