An HTC rant - EVO 4G General

To start off, I'd like to let you guys know that I'm a diehard Android and HTC fan. I have the ADP1, the Nexus One, and now the Evo. I was extremely excited about the Evo on launch day (like many of you). Now that much of this excitement has been killed by the recent plague of Evo problems, I'd like to share my concerns:
On my first Evo, I had some pretty bad light leaking from the soft keys. I returned that unit, only to receive what appears to be a refurbished unit. (Good luck trying to explain what light leaking is to the Sprint reps. The lady rolled her eyes at me trying to convince her this problem does in fact exist.) The new unit still had some very slight leakage, and the kickstand was also scratched up. I decided to suck it up and live with it, but the next few days made things worse.
Then we learned about the 30fps cap, touchscreen input lag, the screen lifting up, poor wifi reception, and probably still more to come...Seeing as HTC hasn't even acknowledged these issues, I don't think there will be a fix within my 30 day grace period. As much as I love what this phone COULD be, I'm stuck with what it really is; a bunch of high end components carelessly thrown together...
But not all is lost! HTC still has a chance to fix this! There are still about 20 days before I (and many others) return the Evo. I really hope HTC manages to fix this, whether its through a recall, or something else. I beg of you HTC: Fix your flagship device! It's sinking! (See what I did there?)

Thank god for 30 day full return of all money paid am I right?
P.S. you GOTTA know any 1st gen device you buy is gonna have hardware problems to be ironed out. Don't want to deal with them? Wait for the 2nd gen device a year from now
Example: Theres no way in hell I would buy an iPad due to it being a 1st gen device. I already knew before it came out that it would have hardware problems...

Of the things you listed, defective wifi and the screen lifting up are the only items that are actual defects and neither are present on my Evo. Additionally, my wifi reception is awesome, so I don't agree that that there is a global issue there either.
Actual defects are covered for 1 full year, which is about 6-8 months longer than I intend to keep the Evo (pending what is released). If my screen starts peeling or my wifi actually stops working I will RMA it for another.
I just want to suggest that maybe some of the "issues" users experience are beyond what is reasonable. What do you think?

Ha! I wish. Sprint Premier users can upgrade once per year... Unfortunately I paid a bit for an Evo so my upgrade will be ready come October (One year anniversary from the Hero release date). I hope there is something that convinces me to use it!

None of these issues are particularly bad by themselves. But they are all quickly adding up to signs of poor quality control over at HTC.

I heard that when you activate any new phone, your upgrade eligibility bumps up to that date. I got this from a Sprint rep while planning to buy my Evo. So I won't be eligible for another year.

I agree with the guy on this board that said not to buy any first gen device, because most of the time it will have problems to work out. I haven't experienced any of the problems that some people seem to have, obviously out of hundreds of thousands there will be some problems and HTC and Sprint will deal with them as they come, hopefully in a timely manner.
I wouldn't return your EVO. Its a decent phone and good piece of hardware.

My eligibility date still shows 10/01/10. You can check yours here. I will wait one billing cycle and check again to be sure. If not, then my gf is getting a used Evo to replace her Hero and I'll get whatever the next thing is.

I agree with the OP and about to do the same before my 30 days are up.
I just can't see the EVO running almost every game i put on it slower than the N1 and not to mention some games are just too choppy to play.
HTC had the exact same issue with the HD2 and they NEVER fixed it.
I hope that due to all the media attention the fps issue received, HTC will fix it in a timely manner.
The phone is great and all, but the N1 just beats it for now. at least for me.

Man... I wish I had the stone's to root my Nexus One...
Just a certifiable chicken

but what makes anyone think the HTC will be rolling out a 2nd gen EVO? It seems like every year they come out with completely new devices with different names and whatnot. Granted most internals would be the same but overall, the devices are new.

does htc just have a bad habit of using poor adhesive?
n1 from reports, touch pro from experience and now the evo. how many other htc phones have the problem?
i doubt i'll ever buy another htc phone again - heck before 26 days i may not even have this one anymore.

yep this is gonna b my last "High Tech Computers"phone.so much promises and hype they create before launch and once we get the device after falling for their trap we stuck with it.no more preordering anything for now on for me,jus gonna sit back and READ.

You aren't stuck with anything. Return it.

Uhh, have you been hiding in a cave???

Well, within a few days tons of iPad customers reported issues with Wi-Fi, which Apple confirmed.
I have read issues with some iPads overheating. (Just run a quick google search for 'ipad issues' and you'll see plenty of problems).
More recently, Apple/AT&T managed to leak 100,000+ customers email addresses.
*********************************************************
Is the iPad a poorly made/designed product? NO. Though I do not own one, I will be the first to admit it's a fantastic device.
However, just like any other 1st-gen piece of hardware sold to the masses, issues are bound to crop up, and the EVO is no exception.

That was not my experience. I upgraded in May 09 to a Samsung Rant, then bought a Touch/Vogue a few months later off ebay and activated it on my account but I was still able to upgrade as of May 2010 to my happy little Evo.

would you still recommend the Nexus One?

A good friend is planning to upgrade from the G1 to the Nexus One very soon and is asking me if it still seems like a good idea.
He and I bought G1s within a month of its introduction the year before last (he urged me to get one in fact) and I became obsessed with modding it while he has been content with the normal (unrooted) OS and user interface. I jumped to Verizon to get on a family plan with my wife when the Droid came out, convinced it was the best Android hardware available, but when the Nexus One specs started showing up I started urging him to give it a serious look.
We both became convinced it was going to be a good upgrade for him (he's still on T-Mo) but started having some second thoughts after all the irregular 3G access and other issues started surfacing.
So the question is: Is the Nexus One still a no-brainer for an Android fan wanting to upgrade? Do you regret getting one?
Thanks for any input or advice you can offer!
For Android fan, i would say yes. its been 2 weeks and Google and HTC still havent solved ANY issues with Nexus, but my guess is that eventually they will. Its a great phone with good hardware, but there are lots of bugs in Nexus that I have not had in MyTouch 3G.
The Nexus One is awesome. I get 4 bars of 3G anywhere in Boston, so I think it all depends on the quality of the T-mobile network in your area. Personally, I've never noticed the 3G problem with the Nexus, but expect that to the extent that it does exist, it will be cleaned up with a firmware update.
If your friend is used to an open Android experience I think he'll have a tough time working in a more restricted environment like an I-phone. Maybe I've just become a fanboy though!
I am surrounded by purple (tmobile 3g) I live in Miami.
I have tested the nexus one with 1.6 android and noticed I had no problems connecting I was getting awesome speeds.
I personally think the issue is software based.
Overall i THINK THE NEXUS ONE is a great device and highly recommended. your friend will fall in love with the screen and speed of the phone.
Some minor setbacks but overall the phone is amazing. I switched from teh droid to the N1 im satisfied.

It is not a no brainer, but it is a worthwhile upgrade. Does your friend rely heavily on the hardware keyboard? If so you might hold out for a few more months and see if the rumored N2 with keyboard comes out.
If keyboard does not matter can he hold out for another month or is he really hankering for muffin. If he can hold out then this would give these initial jitters time to settle down and be corrected.
Overall I am very pleased with the N1. It is fast and definitely improves upon many points over the G1. On the other hand my N1 is currently on its way to HTC (dust bunny) so I am back to using my G1 for now. The screen real estate is probably the biggest thing I miss. The performance is not as good, but not so bad as to make lose my will to live.

The hardware keyboard was a big reason I went with the Droid, but I was very disappointed for the first month with it since I was so used to the (sweet) keyboard on the G1 and also quite spoiled with Cyanogen's ROMs. When the Droid got root my aggravation subsided a great deal but I'm still slightly underwhelmed (my latest complaint is that the metallic edge around the (sweet) display is starting to chip a little, grr).
When I started using Swype on the Droid, I told my buddy that I no longer consider a hard keyboard to be a must on an Android phone. I love the way Swype works and would definitely switch to the better processor, improved RAM, etc. of the N1 even without the hard keyboard. I've got my fingers crossed that the Moto Shadow goes CDMA with a blazing chip at some point, but I might "settle" for an N1 when it comes to Vz.
Thanks all for the great comments!
I just recommended the Nexus to a friend at work today, so my answer is yes. I havent had any issues with mine, I love it, I have another line and my G1's on it but I dont think Ive used it more than twice since I got my Nexus the day it came out.
It's really a simply decision man... if he's more like us, a die-hard phone junkie, then he'll probably buy it no matter what you suggest. If he is willing to wait, he probably should. Hopefully in a few weeks the 3G and dust issues will be resolved.

In spite of all the issues, the answer is still HELL YEAH!
The 3G problem is SOFTWARE, and will be fixed by a System Update.
i would definitely do the same and recommend the Nexus One
The Nexus One is awesome & high style! Fast, 4 bars of 3G anywhere in LV, no 3G issues with the Nexus. Go for it and never look back
thanks all for the various replies. i'm the "friend" in the original poster's post.
i do not intend to root my Nexus One.
my concern stems from the seemingly total lack of customer support should one get a defective unit. my G1 is working ok now so i don't see the need to get stomach acid if indeed the Nexus One has a larger than typical defective rate.
one poster/reply wrote that they think that the 3G connectivity and dust issues should be remedied shortly. may i respectfully disagree regarding the dust issue? i DO agree that the 3G issue may well be solved soon via a software update, but i do not agree that the dust issue will be resolved anytime soon. Production lines cannot turn on a dime so quickly and the inventory that is being sold this coming week (this coming week, week of 1/25th, is when i intend to order my Nexus One if the good folks here recommends going forward with it) were produced at least 1-2 months ago in Asia.
What do y'all think, may i ask?
thx in advance for helping me out!
My phone works great in NY. 4 bars pretty much anywhere I go.
Rooted and loving. No problems that couldn't be fixed with a little search or flash.
Coming from having the G1 for the past year, I would definately recommend the N1.
This is an HTC phone... so the dust issue will most likely always be there. Having said that, this phone is fantastic. It's got some small bugs but the hardware is brand new and this phone is all Google and HTC so any updates should come pretty swiftly once they get rolling.
I'd recommend this phone to anyone who's looking for a thin, powerful, fast device. Things are only going to get better with Android, and this phone probably won't have a hard time keeping up.

It is an alternative keyboard. instead of typing the individual letters for a word you drag your finger from one letter to the next. It can be frustrating at times when the word you want does not appear but in general I think it is great. it is the keyboard I use as well on my N1.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRUoWUhcRlE
though they have improved it some since this demo was done.
Ive had the Nexus for over a week now and its far more faster and stable than other manufacturers phones when they come out i.e. Samsung / Nokia / Blackberry.
This thing is fast and quite stable.
GO FOR IT !!!!

If you don't plan on rooting, the N1 is still a great phone. I know quite a few people who have one and they love it. Most of them just use it with out tinkering.
The majority of the people here root their phones. Also, keep in mind this place is somewhat of an unofficial 'support' group. People come here looking for the advice of others if/when they have trouble. While possible, I don't think it's very likely that you would would end up with defective hardware in the first place. If you're not rooting, I doubt you would have very much trouble out of HTC getting a replacement if you somehow do.
The N1 is a badass phone, I <3 mine for everything it is and am recommending it to anyone who asks me what phone they should get.
my 2 cents...

Its a great phone, I love my N1. Well-built, excellent form factor, and as others have said, its FAST! If you do a lot of web browsing you'll appreciate the phone, not only does it load and just move quicker than the G1, the larger screen makes reading so much more pleasurable. Also, since you're unrooted, you may or may not get 2.1 on your G1. I like 2.1 alot, its a vast improvement over 1.6.
I will say though that I do miss the physical keyboard. If you don't do a lot of typing it won't matter so much I don't think.
But seriously, its a solid phone, recommended.

When will our Nexii become old news?

Im getting my N1 tommorow, and I feel like regretting it for some reason.. not for "some reason".. just because I feel like it will be old soon.. and after I just got it..
When will our beloved Snapdragon device finnaly become nothing? If there planning on releasing a 2GHz processor for our phones soon, i'd say maybe next year. Though hopefully not..
Other than that, this phone seems to have an incredible lifespan.. the only way I could see a better Android phone coming out is that it has a better processor (as stated above). Or more RAM, of course.. which has already been done.
Really, I just need some reassuring that such a costly device isnt thrown in the garbage simply after a few months. My mommy didn't want to get this for me as is =/
Alas, there is no way to cease innovation.
The hardware on this device is underutilized. The nexus is the snappiest phone out there. With the g1 and mytouch I could feel the lag, but on the nexus the nexus the UI is snappy, I don't know if I need a device faster than the nexus. If Google addresses the software issues I think this phone can become noticeably smoother and better in so many areas. With adequate attention from android this phone can be relevant for years. I think video calls will become pretty standard as will much better camera hardware and that will eventually put the nexus towards the back of the 'superphone' pack. The nexus camera is disappointing but from what I understand it can vastly improve with software updates.
Basically the phone is performing below its capabilities which is exciting but also disconcerting in that there is no dependable indication that Google will address the minor and major issues that make the nexus somewhat disappointing. Only time will tell, the potential is there, we just need to motivate Google.

I didn't know/think someone would buy the phone for such a price with it being outdated at the time of selling. Guess it doesn't matter though, I will use your advice.
And thanks for the thorough post Maverick, your typing did not go to waste - I read it all. Didn't know the Nexus was performing under expectations - or not being fully utilized. Quite exciting, actually. Can't wait to see what the future holds for this device.

Oh trust me, people are definitely willing. Especially people that don't follow tech news.... Muwhahahahah!
Case in point, I sold my G1 last month for $160. I posted on here about it and others said they sold it for $200+. The kicker is that I got mine for $99 on Amazon, so after using it for 10 months, I even made a profit
Considering here in Australia, the best android phone you can get is a Hero, my nexus one is going to be top of the pack for some time, the best thing that has been annouced here will be the desire in april. But the specs are nearly similar, and there are pros and cons to sense UI.
This phone will last a while if it is properly supported by android updates.

Paid 50 for my G1 because some stupid guy at work thought that he liked his shadow much better, in January of 2009. Sold my G1 for 200 on craigslist February 17th, made huge profit. Too many ill informed individuals to take advantage of...... I guess it works for me.
That is all actually interesting! As a matter of fact, I have a G1.. I didn't think if selling it for 200$ or more though. I couldn't anyways, its in mint condition.. but I broke the screen. While it is still usable, I doubt anyone would want it. I'll just sell it cheap, lol.
Taking advantage of the not tech savy people, a new way for me to make profit I see.. niceeee...

Protect your screen! With a screen protector ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618006 ) or a case! My G1 was in 99% perfect condition when I sold it (I dropped it once and the corner was a bit gummed up).
A few bucks on either yields a few hundred when it's time to sell. Worth it, isn't it?
You know what the sad thing is.. I have a case, the perfect case that would've caused the screen not to break.. but I was getting tired of having a case on all the time, and a few weeks, or days, after I removed the case - I dropped the phone face down - and that was the end of it =/ I would've been devastated if I knew I wasn't get my N1 anytime soon.
I learned my lesson though.. the hard way.

man i hope they announce it tomorrow

Sweet!

So who is getting one when it drops?
It's just another Android phone, nothing special.
They really need to use another form factor to sell it.
my contract is not over until this october.
I got the Eris back in December, but it looks like I may sell it to purchase this, just because it has a better cpu that will offer more support in the longer run and camera with flash(like my previous phone).
I'm getting one if my wife lets me
Otherwise I'm up for renewal 11 Jan 2011
I've had my G1 since April, and I feel like this might be the first phone to make me leave. Nexus was tempting, but the 5 mp camera was lackluster considering the X10 had a better camera and I knew better stuff would be coming out. After the Evo was announced I planned on getting one, but I played with a T Mobile HD2 today, and it was just too big. I had to move my hand to reach the top of the screen. Looks like I'm coming to Verizon!
Annoyed the desire didn't come with this 8meg sensor lol
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
my friend just got his droid recently, and will be under 30 days when the preorder starts to roll, so he lucked out and will be getting this!
after seeing my n1, hes jealous! and now happy that he will be getting this!
I'm definitely going to get it if they did something about the multitouch issues or the pink hues on the LCD screen. I really doubt they fixed either though (I'm guessing it has the same parts as the N1 and Desire), so I'm going or wait and see. I may end up with the Motorola Shadow, I don't know yet.

I really doubt they fixed either though (I'm guessing it has the same parts as the N1 and Desire), so I'm going or wait and see. I may end up with the Motorola Shadow, I don't know yet.

I dunno. It has the memory my Droid is missing.has a decent camera as well. Throw Swype on it and it might be the first phone I've bought in a long time without a physical keyboard. I'll wait and see how rooting and battery life goes, but I think this is a likely purchase for me. Only a few things I don't care for with the Droid, but they seem to be addressed with this phone.
I wish there was a GSM version of the phone! Selling it in the future would be, oh, so much easier.
Come on... all I want is physical keyboard. Though I admit the back of the device looks sexy as hell (and I realize not everyone will like it).
OH YEAH
Pre-ordered mine! Can't wait for Thursday to come...unless I get lucky and Verizon decides to ship mine early too!! Switching from XV6900 with NFSFAN WM 6.5. Excited to try out Android, personally hope Android grows bigger than Apple and their iphone. Can't stand Apple products...

[Q] Manufacturer Support?

So I hate my Hero, A, because it is slow, and B, because it is stuck on 2.1 forever. So I have been looking at the Evo and the Epic, and the other related phones, and here is my question, what is the support going to be like? I know that every time a new phone comes out, the manufacturers seem to forget about the old ones, and for no technical reason, the MyTouch 3G is getting Froyo after all. So one of the things I am looking at with my next phone is that it will be supported for the full two years, the Hero only made it 6 months, so I know that seems like a lot, but I honestly don't think it is too much to ask. If you sell a phone with a 2 year contract, you should support it for at least 2 years, as long as technically possible. So without a vanilla Android phone available on Sprint, which of the two phones do you guys think will be supported with updates longer? I have seen that sources close to Google said the Galaxy S phones will be upgraded to 3.0, but they didn't mention the EVO, even though it meets the spec requirements. Would it be waiting until the end of the year for whatever comes then? Or is just that buying me until December of next year instead of August? Thanks.
No phone will ever be supported for 2 years...some countries even have 3 year contracts as standards...The contract is unrelated to the phone you buy...
The manufacturer warranty is 1 year for all of them...past that you can't really expect them to issue updates for it...that is why we have a community...
You have to remember that the manufacturer is not earning money off your contract, only from the sale and if they have their apps in there, those as well...
The one who is forcing you into the contracts are the carriers...no matter how much you may think the US is a free open country..it is not...out of all the countries we have the most locking of phones and other things...
You are not forced to sign a new contract..you can always pay the full price of the phone up front..the contract just gives you a discount...
Ok, while I will admit all that you said is true, my example is the iPhone. Apple puts out a phone, and continues issuing updates for it, even you you are probably out of your 3G contract now, you can still upgrade to OS 4.0, you won't get all of the features, and it is debatable whether you should have those features, but at least you get part of the update. I don't understand why that can't happen on Android. Even the MyTouch 3G will have had support for over a year. The Hero on the other hand, got its first and only upgrade after about 6 months. Why can't we have some arrangement like that with a non-Google phone? I mean, just give me a full year of updates and I will be happy, if those updates are reasonably prompt, as with the EVO and Froyo. Will that continue with the EVO, or the Galaxy S when we move to Gingerbread?

Well iPhone is different..Apple actually gets paid a portion of your contract...not to mention all app revenue goes to them as well...
But in case of the Hero..it kinda came at a bad time...it was the point where the device specs skyrocketed and Android was moving fast in development..not to mention the Hero was already an out dated phone before it even came out..US was just slow at getting devices on the shelves...recently it seemed to have picked up..before it used to be 6 month - a year before it got in US shelves but was already all over the world...nowadays we get them 1-3 month or so...
Once 3.0 hits Android also slow down a bit in their release cycle...
Most likely you will get 1 year support around these days..and afterwards it will be community support for life ...
Maybe I am slightly bitter, especially that the poor Hero support came after my first HTC phone, the Touch Pro, broke on 4 separate occasions, the first two were within 30 days, so Sprint replaced it, but the 3rd time it took 3 weeks to send to HTC and get it back, after a maze of tech support calls. Then I upgrade to the Hero, and don't get supported.
But what you are saying all makes sense, so I hope either way we get more updates, even if they have to be delivered by the Dev community.

So does mine, thanks to Darchstar and all of his fellow developers. And I can't thank them enough for that, because if it weren't for them, I would have thrown this phone out of my car at high speed off a cliff long ago. But it shouldn't be up to developers to support a year old phone. Especially when it is obviously capable of running newer firmware. And because they don't officially support it, these 2.2 ROMs will never be as good as ones with the official HTC base.

Correct, I just think it is the right thing to do when you sell a phone. Support it for two years. Sprint pays HTC for the phone, and we pay Sprint for the phone and service, so it just makes sense that they Sprint should make sure their customers are supported for at least the two year contract whenever technically possible.
One year of support might be feasable. Htc doesn't want to waste resources supporting old hardware, sprint doesn't want you to reach end of contract. This is why they give upgrade pricing after one year in exchange for 2yr contract agreement. Android platform + this communit have given me the ability to keep a phone for 2yrs with minimal discomfort.

Wait a second... Why the heck would you EVER have to send the phone in to HTC? If it's under warranty, Sprint repair stores handle it for you. If there's no repair stores near you, care cross-ships you out a new (or refurb) phone. You shouldn't have to be without a phone for more than a day, max.

Because it was about 6 months after we bought it, and it we don't buy the warranties. So we called Sprint, and they told us that the only thing they would do is sell us a new phone for full retail, and specifically asked about a loaner or something, and they said that was only for people with warranties. They said the only thing we could do is send it to HTC, so that is what we had to do.
As a rebuttal, you can put 2.2 on a hero, and have everything work. I'm doing that now to get used to not having sense. Sure it doesn't top the charts and 3d games suck on it, but there are plenty 2d games on the market that work fine, you can watch movies that look and sound fine on it if you take the time to convert them properly. Plus, I haven't had any issues with lag, especially with the keyboard. The stock android one us much better than htc's ime.apk in that aspect. And it probably has to do with the haptic feedback. I typed this on my phone and it doesn't feel like a chore.

Thanks again gTen, and rufflez, I have already said how much I love the devs here and on other forums, and all the work they put into the platform, but the operating system is always the best when based on official kernels and and drivers. And it shouldn't be up to the community to support the devices after such a short time. They should improve on work done by the manufacturer, but they shouldn't be solely responsible for the device's advancements.

My upgrade is due today...

I am stuck between the EVO and the Shift.
My wife has the EPIC, which has a really nice GPU, but I refuse to personally own a Samsung phone..
How is the GPU in the EVO Shift?
Is the smaller screen really a draw back?
I came from an Evo to the Shift. Don't want to go back.

It is really a matter of opinion. I had an Epic and I will tell you that there is no other smartphone line on the market that can match the graphics performance of the Hummingbird processor. They won't even come close.
That said, the GPU on the shift is not bad, its just not as good as the one in the SGS line. Personally, I don't play a lot of games on my phone and if I do they are not GPU intensive ones. My wife (she owns the shift and I now have an Evo) plays the sims on her phone and I've never seen it even stutter. I've watched full 1080p avi videos on both phones and never had an issue.
As to the screen, no one can say for you if its an issue. For me, it is. 3.6 is just too small but to my wife its more than enough. My suggestion would be to the sprint store and play with each. If you want the big screen the Evo is great and it has a great development community. If you want the keyboard, even though there doesn't seem to be a lot going on around here there are a lot of great devs would have already switched and are just waiting for permanent root to start releasing some very cool stuff.
For me, I wouldn't get or use my evo without the sprint extended battery for it. That fixes a major evo issue, battery life. It depends on what's most important features on a smartphone. I won't go through all the questions but figure out what you're wanting to do most often and go with the phone which that is it's strongpoints.
None of them do everything well.
I'm personally waiting for root on the Shift before I decide to buy it. Of course by then Sprint may announce something better. We'll see. My Hero is fine for now.

Might I ask why you're waiting for permanent root? You are of course entitled to your own opinion and can make your own decision, I just don't understand your reasoning.

I agree, that's intriguing. Permanent root will happen, the Shift out of the box will blow your Hero away if you're worried about the bloatware.
I have the phone and I'm waiting for Perma root. In fact, if it's not achieved before my 30 days mark, I might take it back and buy it again once its done.
Use and abuse the 30 days I say. This also might free me up for whatever is being revealed on the 7th, which is one day after my 30 day mark.

Like you, I'm currently using an HTC Hero (fully rooted, ROM'd, & themed). I'm due for my upgrade next month, but am having difficulty deciding between the Epic & Evo Shift. They both seem to have their strong points, but I'm just torn. I'm thinking I'll "test drive" the Epic (sAMOLED screen really looks nice), and if I don't like it I'll use the 30-day return policy & give the Evo Shift a try.
The biggest complaint I've been reading about the Epic is lack of support. I've figured out that this basically means people are upset that it doesn't have an official Samsung FroYo release yet. Understandable. HTC seems to have gotten better with their updates (my wife has an OG Evo), but I remember a time when we Hero users were very, very upset with HTC/Sprint because we didn't have Eclair for the longest time. Remember that?
Bottom line (for me) is that no phone manufacturer is perfect!

I've read some speculation about an iPhone 4G, but I don't know if I believe it. I've always felt the iPhone and iOS were overrated - I wouldn't buy one even if Sprint did offer it. Android all the way for me!

I completely agree! The Eclair update for the Hero was a definite disappointment. I was very apprehensive about rooting (fear of bricking my phone). Once I did it & realized how easy it actually was I kicked my self for not doing it sooner - no more dialer lag!
I hope you're right about HTC and their updates going forward. Maybe the Hero fiasco taught them a valuable lesson - the Evo 2.2 update and subsequent patch (Swype & other software) seems to show they've learned something. If the delay goes on much longer for the Epic users, Samsung may find a lot of people either jumping ship early or just refusing to buy their products in the future.
I know I'll most likely root whatever device I end up with, but I think Samsung's delay with FroYo is my biggest hangup because I don't want to go through it again!

Honestly, if you are considering the Epic, don't. Its not worth the money. I bought it at launch and it was the biggest technological mistake I've ever made. I should have gone with my gut and gotten an Evo from the start. If the Epic gets froyo it will be the last update it gets, it will never see gingerbread or anything beyond. They've left the GPS barely functioning for this long and I doubt if they'll ever really care enough to fix it. The upside is you never really have to worry about bricking it because its already a brick.
I have a MacBook and love it. I thought I would like an iPhone but I read stories about the cons of the phone. I feel as if apple heavily censors some apps and deny some really useful apps because maybe they think someone could do something remotely black or grey hattish with it.
A Swiss army knife or leatherman multi tool can be very useful and handy sometimes. You could also use it to cut someone's brake lines or slit their throat. They decide that we aren't responsible enough to have something like that at our disposal. Once again, I digress.

I appreciate the input... any input I get to help me decide. I still have a couple weeks to hash it out, so I'm researching & taking all opinions into account. Speaking of opinions... my ex-wife had a Moment which she cursed constantly... what did she "upgrade" to? You probably guessed it... the Epic.
I also plan to spend some more "hands on" time at the Sprint store with both phones.

I do apologize for my harsh opinion. I felt very burned by Sprint and Samsung based on the fact that the sales rep sold me on the epic based on a claim that there would be 4g in my area within 2 months and that the Epic would have 2.2 in less than a month. However, when I came back to have them check out my wife's instinct the same guy told me that the Epic wouldn't be getting FroYo and as you are aware there is no official Froyo for it nor is there 4G in my area. I bought my wife a Shift because I knew she couldn't handle dealing with the Instinct any longer but I bought it off contract so that when hers is up we can leave Sprint and just pay my ETF. If I could get out of Sprint with just paying one ETF I would do it now.
