Anyone coming from s20 line of phones? - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Using a Samsung galaxy s20 plus exynos version and very tempted by the oneplus 8 pro. My main concern though is the curved comers of the oneplus 8 pro as this is likely to make it difficult to hold the phone without accidental touch presses. Anyone else come from s20 line or considering coming from s20. What are your thoughts please especially now that the S20 line is coming down in price well second hand prices.

I preordered my OP8 pro 12/256 GB on April 15th, expected dispatch date is April 22nd (8/128 was sold out at the time I placed the preorder)
But now my Carrier has a special deal for S20 series, I can get S20+ (exynos) for around 715 euro on a 2 year contract. Ok, it is 8/128 GB version, but still it is 300 euro difference
My previous phone was S10+ (sold it last week) and I was pretty satisfied with it. I actually like OneUI and the possibility of rootless theming with Synergy
I'm undecided what to do now, whether to keep the preorder or to cancel it and take the S20+
important things for me as per priority order : camera, batt life, UI smoothness and theming..
how is your experience with S20+ ? camera, batt life etc ?

Phew that's a good deal buddy. My experience with my s20+ has been overall good. I don't really measure battery that much as I work from home so always have a charger. As for the camera I just take random pics and we all locked down in the UK so haven't been out to capture good pics. The experience overall has improved in terms of performance. I know they say the sd version is better compared to the exynos but have never used the sd so I cannot compare. The thing that worries me the most are the curved edges of the oneplus as they look really big and annoying. As I spend literally all day on my phone for work I would definitely find them hard to manage as most reviews keep on about them curves ?.

i have a s20u hk unlocked bootloader, probably going to return it once i get my op8 pro

Yeah it triggers Knox and you can't undo it.
I didn't go to Samsung any more because I am in the US and rootable Samsungs don't have newer US frequencies. My Tmo McLaren is rooted, so no more Samsungs over here.

ebay, and yeah i can return it, and don't care if the seller doesn't like it. he mislabeled the ad for the phone having 66\71 bands for LTE when it didn't.
I hate samsung, i should've never gone back, what a nightmare especially with their CSC bs !

I have S20 ultra and just got my OP8pro. I havent set it up yet but checked it littlebit and i already hate that it has more curved screen than S20 has. Especially when Samsung started to get rid of curved screens...

I've been a Samsung user for many years, upgraded my Note 9 to the S20 Ultra and didn't feel satisfied. Today I received my OP8Pro 12Gb version and so far I'm blown away. What a mighty device, it makes me smile from ear to ear.
Let's see how this will remain after using this beast as a daily driver for a longer period.

Ordered the ultra, didn't come, cancelled it. Ordered the 1+8pro on the 20th at 1530, came at 0950 on the 21st. Free bullets.
Phone is a beast

I'm in the UK.
I was very surprised tbh, impressive, three used DPD

I am, my S20+ is on eBay now and hopefully my 8 Pro arrives today, would have preferred the blue but not an option in the UK so green it is.
Exynos is a mess this year and the camera still cannot cope with any movement at all in a scene.

I come from a long line of curved screen phones with accidental touch input..
This phone is not like that... curves are not as drastic as are made to look like on reviews.. And palm rejection is excellent as well. . just my 2 cents Love my OP8P in blue.

Right, so, I had my P30 Pro, and wanted to change with something better. Well, it's not, yet. I' e ordered S20 ultra, mega disappointed (camera, battery life, everything), then sold it, and bought s20+, which is far better, but still, the camera is the worst I've ev9seen. Try this, with a tripod: night, no light at all, from nowhere, night mode on, Galaxy S10, Note10+, S20+. Well, the camera, from s10 is impressive! And I'll post images soon. P30 was, and still is an amazing phone, at least for camera.
Now, taking these info in fact, and bringing the advantages from op8 pro, you have the answer. Op8 pro is way better for less money.

Im considering this currently with a s20 ultra with SD processor, but consider OP 8 Pro just for the development capabilities as flashing kernels, roms, etc.
However with all the FP issue after unlock bootloader and doing all the customization options this phone would allow me to do it, im starting to doubt about making the change, im reading all the days this forum to see any updates regarding on those issues, because to keep it stock i would better stay with the s20 ultra.
Any thoughts?

No fingerprint issues that I've seen if you do everything correctly.
Even keeping it stock I would still go with the OP

What would be the correct steps in your thinking to just flash another kernel?
It would be my first OP so not able to compare between samsung vs OP, but if you do, what are the points that will make you go to the OP?

I had the s20 ultra snapdragon version briefly. It was ok, but not much different from my note 10 plus. The OnePlus 8 pro is waaaaay better to me. Especially for the amount your paying $1500 vs $1000... OnePlus all day

I was considering getting note 3 only because of fingerprint sensor, but it is way too large for my liking. And now they release this.

Don't be. Plus it's to be expected that they'd get either an Enhanced or Prime (well except now obviously it's a Pro so) out. Not that I defend Xiaomi but they're not the only ones struggling to balance out price points.
Subject to individual preference of course, sure both 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage are more than welcome but are you sure you don't want to pair those to a slightly more capable SoC with better GPU OR at least with an FHD screen instead?
As for me being Malaysian when Mi are lagging their ass in their own sweet time to even bring in proper official Redmi 3/ido sets on time let alone this Pro I can't be arsed to wait and definitely are happy with how much I've paid for my imported set so yeah.
Hello everyone, does someone know, will the PRO version have capacity buttons light?
Any news here yet? It says 4th of April, but I can't really find anything yet.
It will be more great if :
Super AMOLED 2560 x 1440 pixels or QHD+ with Gorilla Glass 5 with 3D or Force Touch too
SD652 or SD825 in it
USB Type-C
QC 3.0 or Super VOOC
24 UltraPixel with f/1.2 main camera & 24 UltraPixel front camera with f/1.2 (Best lowlight) dual-pixel + iSight technology
Micro SD Card (up to 512Gb) slot separetly from SIM 2nd Slot
10.000 mAh battery capacity
What do you think?

I've just purchased from Spemall. Never used them before, but I guess Paypal has my back if anything dodgy happens. £144 delivered to the UK by DHL, with the promise that they'll "lower the invoice price" so that I get charged less tax at import... We'll see. Should be here by the end of next week.
Just ordered one Redmi 3 Pro yesterday, hope to reicive it as soon as possible.

Ah that's a shame, live and learn I guess. DHL was a pound more but showing as 60% discount, so I assumed that it was the better value option.
This handset is now on hotukdeals.co.uk under an AliExpress seller for the bargain price of £120.

Hey guys,
Is spemall.com a reliable/trustworthy site? I am currently in Cyprus (EU) and its basically between ibuygou.com and spemall.com. Which handles returns friendlier and you guys have had better experiences with?
Thanks!
Hello I just get my redmi 3 Pro. I am installing some apps and noticed that heats up very fast. Does anyone feel the same?
Also sorry if my english is bad im spanish speaker. :good:
I'm not sure whether I should buy the pro version or the non-pro version, if I'm buying the pro version, can I use the ROMs from the non-pro version?
Some one can help me, where is price cheapest?
i'm want to buy PRO version
I've now received my Redmi 3 Pro and after a week of use I am very happy with it. I'm getting 6-7 hours of screen on time, the camera is much better than the reviews led me to believe, and it's been an all round decent experience. The only thing that is bugging me is that I'm on the Chinese ROM and don't seem to have a clear answer on whether the Redmi 3 ROMs will work or will brick my device. Ideally I'd run CM12, but even the Global Miui would be better than the Chinese one.
Redmi 3 Roms seem yet not to work with pro version. Fingerprint and network seem not to work.
Waiting for a fixed release of EU rom.

Well, ain't I lucky. http://es.aliexpress.com/store/1986585 <-- may NOT want to get something there. I ordered a Xiaomi Redmi3, but I got a 2nd hand Samsung E7, packaged in their own unique tape and all. Had to escalate the dispute with Aliexpress, luckily they helped me out.
I guess I may be trying again for the pro version. Any other reviewers?

Just became eligible for device upgrade.. Love my A7, but the S8 is so tempting!

Just got notice Friday night, that I'm eligible for a device upgrade on my At&t plan.....Since then, all's I've thought about was a Galaxy S8! It also doesn't help that 3 people at work and my brother-in-law all recently picked up the S8 and I've help them get them set up... These are seriously some nice looking phones!
There's several reason's I'm thinking of switching....But I'm seriously considering it?!?!

Dude it's barely any different. Unless you have a wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket, it's a stupid move.
I'll never understand people who pay an absurd amount per month on a phone plan when you could just outright buy a phone and it pays for itself in less than six months by paying for a reasonable plan. I pay $30 a month. I have 5gb of 4gLTE data.

What?! Surely that must be a typo? Why would it only have QC 2.0?
Benefits I can see
-Snapdragon 835 vs 820
-Newer Adreno for GPU
-Bluetooth 5.0 vs 4.2
-Slightly more pixels.
That's about it.

I have to agree with TPMJB, I think it would be a bad move. There was a nice offer to get a S8 on Amazon, but the differences are against the S8. The A7 has such a greater sound, greater battery, already a great screen, its CPU and GPU are more than enough for any game (but I don't play), 4GB RAM is also more than enough, ...
Why spending more to get less or something that's not yet needed?

ZTE AXON 8 will be released in 2-3 months and will address any Snapdragon gap, plus keep lower price and stereo speakers.
Plus with a paid off phone you can go pre-paid on major carriers. I pay $38.25 total monthly with no taxes/fees on AT&T (GoPhone, AT&T's in-house prepaid brand) for 6GB high speed data/unlimited calls/unlimited texts.
You can tell that's "pure" AT&T by the low ping speeds. MVNOs have higher ping speeds (higher lag).
But I bring my own phone, so I can get the pre-paid prices. I will never be "post paid" customer" where they rip you off.
I also make sure any phone I own can be rooted and have custom ROMs.
________
The only thing the S8 has the ZTE Axon 7 lacks is the Qi wireless charging. Other than that, the 1-year old ZTE Axon 7 still beats the Samsung Galaxy 8 in every significant way (award winning DAC, front facing stereo speakers), etc.
If I were to get an S8, I would make sure it was the Exynos variant that could be rooted, surely NOT the AT&T branded model!

I said "any" gap. I was just addressing the points listed. Where the Snapdragon 835 is different is allowing much faster carrier speeds (eventually), like 1GB LTE. Not that you'll see that any time soon. So, there's no rush to buy Snapdragon 835 phones until your carriers can deliver the speeds... But yes, the Snapdragon 835 and comparable (like Exynos) are an evolutionary step forward.
My point was, don't jump for the Galaxy S8 when there's LOTS more phones coming out in the next few months that will also have Snapdragon 835 and will be better than the S8, and probably less expensive. Including, but not least the ZTE Axon 8.
I still have a 2014 Snapdragon 805 phone. I'm not buying another phone until a manufacturer released a phone that has all the features I want, or very close to it. The ZTE Axon 7 came very close -- only the lack of Qi wireless charging kept me from buying it.

I was on the same boat until I had it physically on my and hand, and the design is sexy af, but honestly, that's all. I have always been away from Samsung devices because I hate capacitive buttons, and when Huawei (favorite brand) started to put them, I started to look for something else, and Samsung made the contrary move by remove them and improve the design.
Screen is more less the same, and you have to know that battery is noticeable worse when using the device in full resolution, because they come with FHD as default and most of the tests about battery were done with this resolution.
Speaker is average, but is mono. Is a big dealbreaker for me, because no point in having that nice display when you have a mono speaker, is just ruins the multimedia experience.
And the final thing for me to make me pass for the S8 was the fingerprint scanner, next to the camera is the most retarded place to put it, so pretty much is unusable for me.
Price is not important for me, fortunately I can buy any device I want, and I was going to buy the S8 until I had it on my hand. Also I was considering the P10 Plus, mostly because of the camera, but that capacitive button is just not that nice and gestures don't work correctly. I was playing like 10 minutes with it, and gestures were all buggy and not intuitive. Before that, I also had the Mate 9, but I returned it and came back to the Axon 7 because of the screen and sound, even when camera was slightly better.
In conclusion, I won't be changing the Axon 7 until I see a real contender to it. Real stereo speakers, nice battery, good display and decent camera are enough for me, which none of the devices released in 2107 have. In my opinion, exchanging the multimedia experience for a "better" design is not the best move to do.
:good:

what I meant is that there is not really a gap, it's not like the 820 is so slow already that one NEEDS a 835. A real gap is something like a a notebook with an Atom and a real laptop with a Pentium or a Core.
So the S8 has a faster processor but not needed by any application around.
Beside, I've read so many times that the S8 screen is very fragile. One drop and...
What are you tempted by? The stupid price? Locked bootloader? No root? Red tinted display? Random reboots? Subpar battery life? Fast charging not working while the display is on? Bloat? Lag? Lack of updates? Lower Android version than what the Axon is currently on? help me understand this temptation.

Will the Axon 8 be released soon? I thought they were going to release an Axon 7S or something like that. Slightly upgraded Axon 7 (more ram, I think and slightly better snapdragon)
Edit: It's the Axon 7S, not the 8. There's not much difference between the 7 and the 7s

There will be an Axon 8. The 7S is just an update for China, with Snadragon 821. It probably won't be released to other countries.
The AXON 7 was announced end of May last year, released in June. The previous flagship (2015) was middle of summer (announced July, released August). With the Snapdragon 835 situation could be June/July.

As far as I know, the Axon 8 will be the same device as the Axon 7S, and they will just change the name for international market.
It seems the real change maybe will come next year when they released the Gigabyte phone the showed earlier this year.

Is it the Right Time to buy a new Smartphone?

I wanted to ask if it's worth buying another Note 4 within this year and 2018. I currently have the SM-N910H variant (Exynos), but I want to get one that's SM-N910F variant (Snapdragon). I found one that's about $480 but it's refurbished. Should I consider getting it or should I go for something else? Also forgot to mention that I have a spare ZeroLemon extended battery, since I have a TQTHL extended battery. So that's also why I want to get another Note 4 so I could put it to good use. Thanks In Advance.
Edit: Okay, so I wanted to revive this thread after a couple of months for any new insights on what smartphone to get. So far this year has been somewhat promising, with some disappointments about no headphone jacks and notches. But overall, I'm not sure if it's a good time to consider buying one or holding off till next year. I plan to get the Oneplus 5T during this summer, since the phone does seem like a worthy buy for about 400-500 dollars. I was also thinking about the note 8 or 9, but I don't want to sacrifice an arm and a leg for it. And I've lost faith in Huawei after their announcement about no more unlocked bootloaders. I know that there are plenty more to come, especially during the fall, but will it be worth the wait, since many new smartphones seem to follow the design of notches and no headphone jacks.

480$ refurbished WTF ! In my country i just got refurbished note 4 snapdragon N910T and exynos N910L 2 devices in 280$.
Note 4 is still good device but its kind of old now if your budget is 500$ i highly recommend you (one+5) its super fast device 8gb ram+snapdragon 835 dual rear camera etc or my second recommendation will be (s7 edge EXYNOS) excellent device all around.

Thx for the info. I might consider about the OnePlus 5. Actually I did see a Note 4 Snapdragon SM-N910F on Amazon priced at about $268 but the condition of it was used.

I did find one for about $268 dollars, however it has been used though. Also I'm mainly looking for a Snapdragon one since I have the Exynos one already. But I might consider browsing a bit on eBay instead of Amazon.
Personally I would rather get a N910C as the N910F isn't very stable and has a tendency to overheat.
Keeping in mind the eMMC issue that so many on the forums have faced, the refurbished or used Note 4 could be a ticking time bomb. Perhaps better to put your money towards a new phone or at least a phone which doesn't have a history of hardware failures.
i found a N910T on ebay new for 238.00 hopefully it is new. how can you tell if its been referbished? Im switching back from the I 6Splus and cant wait.

I don't know about the C version, but my F version, after a little more than 2.5 years, it overheats for sure. When this happens, it is impossible to use it until it cools down.

I can personally vouch for the N910C. As it runs on the more stable Exynos 5433 SOC.
I just keep rebuilding my note 4 once you get good at seperating the bezel without craking the screen . U can repair any internal issues without haveing to buy a new screen every time. All the new notes have stripped down features. I need my ir blaster and removable battery I don't want to dismantle the phone just to replace the battery each year.
I think this note 4 will be my last phone, simply of the battery removal, and can tack on a 10000mah battery on longer trips, not to mention if you compare the specs between NOTE 4 and the new Iphone X, Note 4 Wins in many categories especially the screen and camera areas, also compare the note 4 to the note 8. Specs are comparable for this 3 year old phone. Works very well. But to @[OP] $480 is bit much. I paid $100 for mine, and they are about 180ish or so around my area.
I'd avoid any Snapdragon-based Note 4s if I were you. Apart from the overheat issue, the Snapdragon variants also suffer from the infamous EMMC issue, which is a deal-breaker.
to me, exynos is the best choice

Except the fact snapdragon version have much more custom ROMs (nougat fully working including, + oreo to come). Well if you have account on xda... then you probably will count it like a big plus

Well that is true that Snapdragon does have a fully working port for nougat. But there is currently a developer who's working on porting nougat onto our Exynos devices. Many devs have given up on it but I feel like he might be the one to get it to work.
I'm still using using my 2.5+ years old n910c with a slightly newer battery and it never disappointed me so far .
Till today I haven't found any phone to be strictly better . All new phones have over note 4 are better SoC and Camera . But the new designs I don't like so much , not to mention luck of removable battery, SD cards, infrared , a proper load speaker etc.
The best upgrade for a note 4 would probably be note 8, but that's insanely priced so...
If you have the money you could get a Mate 9 and that would be a nice moderate upgrade too .

Hello there. Totally worth it. Mine N910F is the best so far. Even G935F and G928F was my ex-phones and the only one pros was the 1h sot over my note 4 snapdragon.

Worthy Successor to Nexus 5X?

OK so the N5X is 3 years old now... any new phones out or coming out that are similar in price (budget-mid price range), and will have similar custom ROM support?
Just curious, as my N5X is still going strong, but there seems to be a roadblock on getting Android Pie to be fully functional in the few attempts I see (encryption?)
I've been keeping an eye on the new Nokia #.1 devices, and other similar specc'd phones.
Thanks.

I replaced my Nexus 5x with an Essential PH-1 on Prime day. This is the first non Nexus device I ever owned but it's very much a spiritual successor to the Nexus lineup. I am waiting for it to go back on sale again so I can pick one up for my mom.
I would consider something like the OnePlus/Oppo if it were available on Sprint but unfortunately my device selection is limited being on this provider.

Those are still pretty spendy at $400+. I'm looking for the $300 or less range, same as the 5X was. I really can't see spending that much for a phone, as I'm not quite as hooked into it as some seem to be, I just need a nice reliable device I can customize easily like the 5X.
Nokia 7+ or Xiaomi Mi A2. Both Android One.
Nokia 7.1 (processor isn’t very good though), Nokia 7.1 Plus (awesome if launches globally near China price) or Nokia 8.1 (TBA).

Yeah I was looking at the Nokia phones as well. I'm in the US, so want to purchase them here so they have a warranty valid in the US.
Any more thoughts on this topic as the holiday sales are upon us?

I did... a little quirky, kept locking up, other little issues. I don't think Pie will be viable for the N5X in the long run.
Right now I'm running latest Oreo stock but rooted with Magisk and Franco kernel.
I'm asking about new phones, not ways to keep my old phone running.
Thanks.
@g90814, you're welcome
The Pixel 1 and Pixel 2 prices are about 300-500 bucks now. And that is very good.

you can try the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE or The Pocophone F1 the Poco has a flagship specs with snapdragon 845 but its camera is not pretty good because Xiaomi just nerf the Poco's camera in the stock camera so you have to install a google camera. Mi 8 SE has snapdragon 710 which is quite rare and according to some people, it's a Snapdragon 845 with a weaker GPU.

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE not available in US as of now unless you want it shipped from China.
Pocophone is an option, but a little expensive for my tastes ($345 for 64GB model) and not available with US warranty (yet).

From everything I found, at that price point, the Pocophone is the best one, anything cheaper is way worse and not many things a little bit more expensive like at $400 or $500 are still not as good as it is. You don't really have to worry about warranty if you buy on Amazon though, if Xiaomi don't give you warranty, Amazon will as well as the resellers so don't worry about that. Bellow that 300 bucks, you may also get some other Xiaomi phones with good specs but most of them are using snapdragon 6xx which is not quite good.
Essential phone is truly the lowest price replacement of good quality.
I wouldn't recommend that pocophone for anyone in America because it doesn't work on Verizon or Sprint.
The pixel phones are all decent, but they have major hardware issues and look ugly.
LG makes the best looking and some of the most feature rich phones, but can't ever update software. (V30 is just an awesome phone form factor tho)
If I had to recommend a few replacements these would be it:
Galaxy s8 or newer Samsung flagships (TouchWiz is better than stock Android in 2018 amazingly)
Essential phone
LG v30*
Oneplus 6t (No other OnePlus phones though because the rest are beat by Galaxy s8/s9 and the essential phone at every price point)
*For v30 you must be a regular headphone jack user. That quad dac is amazing. Makes a $10 pair of headphones sound like $150, and regular car speakers sound like a full on audio upgrade. Being an LG there is next to no software support and no dev support, but the audio almost makes up for it.

Other option to consider however....
Downgrade to upgrade.
The 5x sucks you'll be happier with a Galaxy note 4, note 3, or a Nexus 6 as they are all faster and better phones in 2018 due to having 3gb of ram.
Plus they have great dev support and in the note devices extended batteries that can last a long time. Going from a Nexus 5x to any flagship with 3gb or more of ram in the last 5 years is really a massive upgrade. That 1gb of ram is the difference between usable and unusable.

Thanks for all that, Nascar. Lot's to consider, but the 'downgrade to upgrade' is a valid point. I was eyeing some refurb Galaxy s# phones, maybe I'll go for that.
I have bought a OnePlus 6 with the discount from Black Friday (and that will be valid until Christmas, I think). It is exactly the same price as the Nexus 5x 32gb originally.: $429,00. In this sense I think it is a proper successor. It is a little big, though.
And I disagree with the post above. The S8 is a great phone, but it is worse than the OnePlus 6 in most aspects but the camera.

Is it really worth upgrading to the S20 Ultra from the S10+

I know all about the new features and improvements: the crazy camera, beautiful 120Hz screen, huge battery and so on.
But I want to know what you guys really think?
They are offering good trade in values too ($600 for the S10+) and the preorder discount (~$200-235), which is only good at samsung.com. But I already own the Buds and the Galaxy Watch Active2...[emoji53]
So, with all that (including the S10+ trade in), we still have to pay ~$900 (with tax) cash for the S20 Ultra. Is it really worth it?

These threads are really pointless. If it makes sense for you, then make the change. If it doesn't make sense to you then don't. Only you know which differences matter to you.

That is only something you can decide. I upgraded from a note 10+5G (expensive) because I want the camera/screen upgraded and want of the Verizon version that can't even upgrade to other carrier software because it's a one off (with the mmWave antennas).
For you, maybe it's worth it, maybe it's not.
The answer is highly subjective - if you are asking the question, your personal answer is probably 'no', at least not 'day one'. Wait for prices to drop and then go for it.
It's entirety up to you my friend... For me, yes. I pre ordered the ultra upgrading from my S10+. Now is for you to decide if it's worth for you
