[ROOT] Need help rooting my S8 SM-G950U please! - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello, I have been looking for in wide for a way to root my device in have gotten no luck whatsoever. I have rooted to devices in the past but one of them had an unlocked boot loader and the other was rooted using towel root. So when it comes to locked bootloaders I am seriously lost. So if anyone can point me in the right direction or even walk me through it I would seriously appreciate it because this has frustrated me for some time now and I want to root it so bad. Here's my device info;
-Model: S8 Sm-g950u
-One ui version: 1.0
-Android 9.0
-Baseband version: G950USQS7DSK2 (v7 bootloader)
-Android security patch level: November 1, 2019
-Carrier: Simple Mobile (powered by T-mobile)
Thanks.

the G960U is not rootable, period.
The G960F and G9600 are rootable.

Right, but the device the op mentioned is 950U not 960U that you stated.
Why would we mention Galaxy S9 in a Galaxy S8 section?

To a certain bootloader yes there are methods. I think he meant 950 and not 960. After you read 5000 threads a day sometimes they run together.
If we get edl 9008 files I'm sure root could be achieved.
But you have to ask yourself if root is even worth it on 950 anymore. No custom roms. So a bit of xposed. But goodlock. And substratum or hexed themes. Dont really need it no more

True, although if I still had my S8, the main reason I want to run root is for apps like Cerberus, which is part of the reason why I am patiently waiting for one that works with the S9+ without tripping knox.

Again all we should need is the rev 7 edl files. Should be the same as rev 6 rooting method. Edl a rooted system and flash the combination file bootloader in odin. pretty much in a nutshell. I got the rev 7 combo file out there. We just need those edl files to try

if there is root available for the g950u and u1 here the video. eye in android 9 can be modified but I have not tried root only android 7

I just wanted to make this perfectly clear: DO NOT use this kernel on a Verizon variant (almost impossible as it hasn't been officially released). This kernel is not signed and the bootloader will error out. You'll then be soft bricked until you flash a signed kernel in Odin.
Visual proof...first the signed unsecure kernel that allowed first root on the VZN SGS4 (notice the signature at the bottom):

Now your boot.img....which is missing the signature:
Again, please folks...do NOT flash this if you don't have an unlocked bootloader and an original kernel backup. Things could get REAL UGLY, REAL FAST.

No, it's not. No need for it to be. International bootloader is not locked.

Since it's now VERY obvious you are not the author of this kernel, I will try to explain what I think happened. The person that created this kernel probably (and I say probably because I'm not going to waste the time and bandwidth to download 1.9GB of software I don't need) downloaded the leaked firmware and extracted the boot.img. He then made two minor adjustments that gave root access and repackaged the kernel. This probably took all of two minutes. I haven't looked at the original boot.img, but there's a 99% chance this gives root on a N9005.
There's a 50/50 chance it will work on any other N3 variant that doesn't have a locked bootloader. It depends entirely on how closely the keys match. In the US, this means Sprint, T-mobile, and sometimes AT&T. The S4's bootloader was locked by AT&T and I'm expecting the N3's to be as well. Verizon is almost always locked unless you buy a developer edition phone. A locked bootloader will fail to boot an unsigned kernel and the phone will be soft bricked.
This is one of the reasons unlocking a bootloader is so important to people that enjoy customizing their Android phones. It allows for custom recovery installation, custom kernel (which can then be unsigned), and custom ROM installation. Root can still be achieved with a locked bootloader, but it is much more difficult.

Korea Telecom (KT) Anyone?
Has anyone tried rooting the SM-N900K?
Does the galaxy3root dot com method work?
Terrified of trying this for fear that it will brick my device.
I'm trying to figure out why anyone would try this, when Chainfire has done his thing, is this to try and avoid the counters being triggered or something?
Edit: Scratch that.... just noticed the dates.... didn't realise how far down the forum list I'd scrolled in tapatalk haha.

Towelroot doesn't work

That's not a big surprise, since firmware was patched back in June or something and even Note 3 with latest firmware can't be rooted with towelroot, unless you downgrade kernel to older version first. Developer supposed to work for Google now, so don't expect updates either.
Why even bother with something that doesn't work? We all know chainfire has a working root

Chainfire trips knox and some people may want to keep knox cool for various reasons (like they may need knox for work for example), so it was worth a try, but a very long shot.
Also, did anybody actually tried chainfire method with T-mo ?
Chainfire may have exynos version? I'm not sure and also would that work on locked bootloader, like ATT version is probably getting? I mean we all expect T-mo version to be unlocked, but did anybody actually verified it is, since only insiders may have access to the phone ATM.

Also I just read in the root thread that chainfire works on Tmobile now. But as usual will trip Knox. To some it may not be a big deal but I like to resell my phone and not having Knox tripped will give it a better resell value.

In what way does it give it a better resell value? just curious not trying to be a d*ck. most people root their device anyways and the ones who dont probably wont notice it.
so what are other disadvantages of tripping knox?
Towel Root won't work on any firmware released since June 3, if I remember correctly. Google hired the guy to find and patch the types of exploits he discovered and used in Towel Root.

Just based off selling price and how long it takes to sell on swappa, Craigslist, or eBay. And some will ask if it's rooted.

All my phones sold on eBay with root sold for higher than those without root. So I don't know what your referring to.

I would sell on eBay but I hate the 10% they take from you. So I've never sold my phones there. I like selling on swappa or Craigslist.

oh the phones i have i bought new and i have never sold on any of those sites so i wouldnt know.
I think most ppl who aren't that familiar with root but have heard of it somewhat gets scared of units that are rooted. So they tend to stay away from buying them. And some care to have Knox for work. So your buyer base are much slimmer IMO than with an unrooted and Knox untripped devices.

Rooted my t-mobile note 4 with chainfire.
It's not that the phone is rooted, but you lose Knox functionality. For those that want it or need it, your phone loses value. Look up Knox 2.0 if you're unfamiliar with what it is.

Actually it does work.. I rooted my note 3 about 2 months ago and it did just fine..
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 and i use towelroot to root my phone and it says this phone currently not supported
I towelrooted my S5 (though I had to 'jump through hoops' to do it)
My wife is getting the Note 4 tomorrow which I want to root and debloat for her.
I'm kinda keen not to blow the warranty on the day of purchase......
Is there a way of rooting without tripping knox? I've had a quick look at the sticky's and not seen anything......
Edit......With my S5, which was running a KK firmware (later than June 2014) I had to install towelroot, odin flash a pre June kernel, run towelroot, odin flash the original (post June) Kernel. .....will this method work on the Note 4? (Assuming the device still has out of the box KK)
Edit 2....nvm....just figured it out for myself.....looking at the device specs.....It comes with 4.4.4 which I guess means that 4.4.2 is not available for it. Which in turn means pre June firmware kernels don't exist, so there's nothing available that towelroot will work with.......

Just use CF AUTO ROOT on your PC. TMOBILE does not care from my experience.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app

SM-N915S/K Root

Root confirmed working for Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Exynos Korea SM-N915 "S" via the legend Chainfire CF-Auto-Root
FOR THE MOST CURRENT ROOT METHOD, PLEASE REFER TO THIS THREAD >> [INFO] [CF-Auto-Root] Galaxy Note Edge SM-N915
WARNING : KNOX COUNTER WILL BE TRIPPED AND WARRANTY VOID - THERE IS NO CURRENTLY KNOWN METHOD TO RESET THE COUNTER OR ROOT WITHOUT TRIPPING KNOX !!
I used : SM-N910"K" (Korea, Exynos): CF-Auto-Root-treltektt-treltektt-smn910k.zip . Another user in this thread had reported that using the SM-N910 "S" Cf-Autoroot failed to boot, so I instead tried the "K" and success. All THANKS & credit to @Chainfire, if you require the stock recovery for SM-N915S, I'd gladly send it to you if you require it to make a formal Cf-Autoroot for our device.
Root has also been confirmed using the same method and file for SM-N915"K" here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56761632&postcount=34
Method:
1. Advised: Have a full stock firmware package available (just in case) [sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com]
2. Have Samsung USB drivers installed on Windows PC (Easiest way is DL KIES from Samsung)
3. Flash via Odin [I used Odin3 v3.07 - attachment] as per Chainfire's instructions !
** If unsure how to use Odin, there are many guides found by searching !
4. Wait around 30 secs after flash (stuck on boot screen), and hopefully device will boot.
5. Open SuperSU app and update SU if prompted
Note: You will have installed stock Android system recovery for SM-N910K. This should not affect the operation of the ROM.

So Cf-Autoroot from Note 4 works for SM-N915 "S". If so which exact one ?
If confirmed for "S" model, would be one less thing for me to look at. ..... I can proceed with a kernel

I am not sure if it was for the S model.
I remember the Japan model was first to be rooted and there is a youtube video on it.
But unsure about the "S" model.
Didnt see the S in the frost post.

So glad to hear that there will be someone else on here with SM-N915S model.
Silly question, but what would be the benefit of rooting this model of Edge right now? I ask coz there's no custom rom available atm.

Main use is for root apps and deleting system apps.
You can then manual theme things.
After my samsung s2 i just stuck with stock rooted roms. Removed things i didnt want.

That's what I need, there's a lot of Korean apps on my phone. I have disabled some but they still show up here an there. Another very annoying thing is the dailer, it has Korean text on it which I want to remove as I only want English.
I'd be happy if I could remove some of those apps, and add the yahoo and twitter panels.
Do you think I'd able to flash an international version rom my Edge at some point?
Thanks.

I am unsure on that. The processor is different I believe and that would be a main thing.
But with root you would be able to change most of the apps and you might be able to set up the build.prop to a USA one that should let you add yahoo and get to the USA panel store.

Apart from removing a few "useless" apps, able to use various root type apps (properly) such as Greenify, Titanium, Synapse etc.
But the main reason is to control a custom kernel I intend to build (time permitting). Also remove knox features and set SELinux permissive for Titanium Backup app to work correctly.
In future, I might look at a very basic ROM, but NOT on my to-do list

The processor being different is my main concern, let's hope some people will address this.
The edge is the best piece gadget I have ever owned. I'd be sorted if these issues were sorted.

Post in Q&A where your "question" belongs.
It's OT and nothing to do with my general statement of intention to develop this beast (when I get my hands on it).
I'm going to start taking a look at kernel sources sometime today/tomorrow, so I get a head start before the device arrives (Friday? )

Anything special with this update ? Would this disable the recent root capability ?
It says it's the security patches but clocking in at over 300mb doesn't make sense for just security patches...
Exactly, I'm gonna wait and see before I update. Hoping this root leads to greater things and would hat to loose it if this patches it.
It's been mentioned before on multiple threads. Root is still achievable on the latest patch

Oh speaking of root, I have noticed something. If you enable secure startup and then reboot and decrypt with your pattern and then try to use titanium backup-- it says no root. I just disabled secure startup and rebooted and all was good again. Just a random thing and did not want to make a separate thread. If anyone disproves this, let me know. I prefer secure startup.

Unlocked phone, should I update?
I just received my new S7 Edge (from T-Mobile) from someone locally last week. I updated the phone but could not use it on AT&T until I unlocked the phone. T-Mobile would not unlock it because I was not under contract with them. I found a *service that enabled me to use the T-Mobile's unlock app to unlock and I have been rocking ever since... then I started getting this notification to do an update. The details of which mentions security... would I be at risk for this update to re-lock my phone? I don't know how often these updates come out but I don't want to worry each time.
* did not mention the service name because I don't want my first post to get deleted...

Perhaps you shouldn't at all. It requires reading, following directions and some minor searching for the fine tuning.

I'm curious as to what "service" you used. Your post won't get deleted unless it's directing the forum to use something illegal or for your personal profit.
The unlock should persist even after rooting.

I used cellunlocker.net I really went out on a limb trying them out but I'm glad I did. All my emails were answered but somewhat delayed. The phone was brand new, never been out of the box, but T-mobile would not unlock it for me.

New software version L720VPSGPL1

HI,
While in the process of resetting my phone, I checked for update and was informed of a new download. After installing it, the software version is now L720VPSGPL1. I googled this but nothing came up. Anyone else getting this update? I'm in the U.S. if that makes any difference.
Thanks

HI,
I'm from Russia, I also received an update to version L720VPSGPL1
Sorry for my English
Found a link through Bing but not sure who operates this site:
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=search&searchValue=SPH-L720
I received it too last week and posted in the rdf forum. I too haven't been able to find any info about it with. Sprint hasn't posted a change log either.
Update is available, but the update failed because apparently something changed my build.prop. Anyone know where to find unmodified files from the original version?
Is this version rootable? If updating a rooted phone, does it unroot?

It will fail and possibly brick your phone if you try to update with a modified system (root, custom recovery, etc). Download the OK3 tar from www.sammobile.com and flash with Odin. Then you can update to PL1. From what I've seen it's only a security update.

Managed to dump an unmodified build.prop from stock ROM. Did a hex compare to mine, only difference is 2 hex bytes appended, 0A 0A. I guess some app that needed root modified my build.prop and when I uninstalled it, it changed it back but not cleanly. Anyway, copied clean build.prop to /system, then let the phone update and it succeeded. Figured it wouldn't hurt anything as I could re-flash with Odin if it bricked. Lucked out and phone update succeeded. Now on PL1 and didn't even lose root.
My wife is traveling to Russia in about 2 weeks. Wanted to UNLOCK the phone so she can buy a local SIM card and use her phone while visiting. Called Sprint and they said they unlocked phone, but not sure how to tell what (if anything) changed.
Is there a method to SIM unlock (and/or carrier unlock) with the PL1 baseband software?

There is a program called GTUpdate2_v3.1.8.apk that can unlock PL1 on a rooted phone. I think it's not a free software, but someone posted a link to it on the forums once.
I think without root, the program should at least tell you if the phone is unlocked.

v11.0 is just a small update, so you have to flash the full ROM first which is V10.9. There is also the Bare Bones version which is just super debloated.
I'm confused on the versioning. Alphabetically, VPS comes before VPU, so I was thinking that "VPSGPL1" was older. Obviously versioning rules come fast & loose, but I'm curious what the VPS indicates that is different from VPU.
So then is this the correct order for different modems?
Code:
L720VPUFNAE
L720VPUGOD2
L720VPUGOK3
L720VPSGPL1
