New software version L720VPSGPL1 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

HI,
While in the process of resetting my phone, I checked for update and was informed of a new download. After installing it, the software version is now L720VPSGPL1. I googled this but nothing came up. Anyone else getting this update? I'm in the U.S. if that makes any difference.
Thanks

HI,
I'm from Russia, I also received an update to version L720VPSGPL1
Sorry for my English

Found a link through Bing but not sure who operates this site:
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=search&searchValue=SPH-L720

I received it too last week and posted in the rdf forum. I too haven't been able to find any info about it with. Sprint hasn't posted a change log either.

Update is available, but the update failed because apparently something changed my build.prop. Anyone know where to find unmodified files from the original version?
Is this version rootable? If updating a rooted phone, does it unroot?

It will fail and possibly brick your phone if you try to update with a modified system (root, custom recovery, etc). Download the OK3 tar from www.sammobile.com and flash with Odin. Then you can update to PL1. From what I've seen it's only a security update.

Yes. Same root method as previous versions.

I've been searching around a bit, anyone know off top of head what the newest (available) modem is to download standalone?

Managed to dump an unmodified build.prop from stock ROM. Did a hex compare to mine, only difference is 2 hex bytes appended, 0A 0A. I guess some app that needed root modified my build.prop and when I uninstalled it, it changed it back but not cleanly. Anyway, copied clean build.prop to /system, then let the phone update and it succeeded. Figured it wouldn't hurt anything as I could re-flash with Odin if it bricked. Lucked out and phone update succeeded. Now on PL1 and didn't even lose root.

My wife is traveling to Russia in about 2 weeks. Wanted to UNLOCK the phone so she can buy a local SIM card and use her phone while visiting. Called Sprint and they said they unlocked phone, but not sure how to tell what (if anything) changed.
Is there a method to SIM unlock (and/or carrier unlock) with the PL1 baseband software?

There is a program called GTUpdate2_v3.1.8.apk that can unlock PL1 on a rooted phone. I think it's not a free software, but someone posted a link to it on the forums once.
I think without root, the program should at least tell you if the phone is unlocked.

It might be hard to find as the developer has asked all links to it be taken down.

Got root using cf auto root and confirmed it with root checker and busy box. Also installed twrp through the twrp app and no brick yet. Don't know which rom I can install yet. It's been a while since I've rooted and romed a phone. Kinda forgot how that works, well not the flashing the rom part but if this Pl1 firmware will cause problems with a rom I flash lol . Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance

I could not find the application, and when my wife got there, she's getting an "Invalid SIM" message on her phone. So she's going to buy a phone to use while there. Thanks for all the help in this thread!
Can anyone tell me where I can find current instructions to ROOT my Sprint Galaxy S4? It currently has the updated software (L720VPSGPL1). What I've found seems to be outdated.
I would also like to ROM using the Wicked. Sounds like it's clean and fast.

Odin TWRP .tar file for L720 from https://twrp.me then flash ROM or SuperSU zip from Chainfire's website (ROM is already rooted) in TWRP recovery.

I did try your rom 1st and I got bootlooped. Have been running resection 6.0 rom and haven't had any issues yet. I will try yours again. Not sure if I saw 2 versions of it or not, but if I did which one should I try. I like switching things up from time to time, but I used to like having at least 2 properly functioning roms saved to my phone incase. TIA

v11.0 is just a small update, so you have to flash the full ROM first which is V10.9. There is also the Bare Bones version which is just super debloated.

I'm confused on the versioning. Alphabetically, VPS comes before VPU, so I was thinking that "VPSGPL1" was older. Obviously versioning rules come fast & loose, but I'm curious what the VPS indicates that is different from VPU.
So then is this the correct order for different modems?
Code:
L720VPUFNAE
L720VPUGOD2
L720VPUGOK3
L720VPSGPL1

I just wanted to make this perfectly clear: DO NOT use this kernel on a Verizon variant (almost impossible as it hasn't been officially released). This kernel is not signed and the bootloader will error out. You'll then be soft bricked until you flash a signed kernel in Odin.
Visual proof...first the signed unsecure kernel that allowed first root on the VZN SGS4 (notice the signature at the bottom):

Now your boot.img....which is missing the signature:
Again, please folks...do NOT flash this if you don't have an unlocked bootloader and an original kernel backup. Things could get REAL UGLY, REAL FAST.
Confirmed variants for various countries
SM-N9002 Dual Sim variant for Chinese Market

You say that this kernel is not signed ?
No, it's not. No need for it to be. International bootloader is not locked.

Since it's now VERY obvious you are not the author of this kernel, I will try to explain what I think happened. The person that created this kernel probably (and I say probably because I'm not going to waste the time and bandwidth to download 1.9GB of software I don't need) downloaded the leaked firmware and extracted the boot.img. He then made two minor adjustments that gave root access and repackaged the kernel. This probably took all of two minutes. I haven't looked at the original boot.img, but there's a 99% chance this gives root on a N9005.
There's a 50/50 chance it will work on any other N3 variant that doesn't have a locked bootloader. It depends entirely on how closely the keys match. In the US, this means Sprint, T-mobile, and sometimes AT&T. The S4's bootloader was locked by AT&T and I'm expecting the N3's to be as well. Verizon is almost always locked unless you buy a developer edition phone. A locked bootloader will fail to boot an unsigned kernel and the phone will be soft bricked.
This is one of the reasons unlocking a bootloader is so important to people that enjoy customizing their Android phones. It allows for custom recovery installation, custom kernel (which can then be unsigned), and custom ROM installation. Root can still be achieved with a locked bootloader, but it is much more difficult.

Korea Telecom (KT) Anyone?
Has anyone tried rooting the SM-N900K?
Does the galaxy3root dot com method work?
Terrified of trying this for fear that it will brick my device.
I'm trying to figure out why anyone would try this, when Chainfire has done his thing, is this to try and avoid the counters being triggered or something?

[Q] Odin fails 4.3 bootloader issue

I am trying to install a 4.4.2 rom. It (phoenix) is on, but the baseband of my I9505 is still stuck at Mk2.
I followed steps to flash a new modem, but it reports failed every time.
I downloaded a stock 4.4.2 rom. It failed to install in odin. I was able to get back in recovery to use my nandroid, but I would really like to get this critter working with a 4.4.2 rom.
Is there a way to just update the bootloader?
Is there any drawback to being on the 4.4.2 BL instead of the 4.3 one I am on now?
Should I have a custom kernel that relaxes permissions or something?
Thanks tons.
Mike

That file you are trying to flash is only for the old bootloader. I think you have the new bootlader so that file is not for you. If you want to update your modem, then pick a newer modem.

I thought the NC9 designation meant it was the right modem. Is there another version of that file that is for the new bootloader? I also believe I am on the new boot loader. I got the lovely knox 0x1 warranty result to go with it...
I will take a gander at the modem section again to see if I can find the ones that work with the new bootloader.
Went to sammobile to try to get an updated firmware for the device. I bought my USCC i9505 on ebay, for use in the us, but on sammobile I cannot choose USA as a place to check the firmware from. Is it only a international device? Is there a USCellular stock 4.4.2 I should be looking for? Thanks.

Just pick a modem from this thread.

I think the ones at the bottom are the latest.
ps why do you want to update the modem? If everything works, then it's ok. It's not that a newer modem is always better.

Thanks for the reply, I will give that thread a look. My problem is that when I move to a 4.4.2 rom I am not able to send text messages. I noticed after a few days of fighting with it that the rom I had was NB9 and the baseband of my phone was MK2.
I was under the belief that if I got my baseband to be NB9 I should have everything back in order.

I don't think its a problem with the modem. I had a similair problem once and that was caused by an incorrect "smsc number". That number is needed for sending sms. You can receive right?
I don't know how you can change it with the default sms app, but with an app like Go SMS Pro you can enter it manually.
Just google for: smsc number [insert provider here] see if that works.

I could not get into my S3's SMSC settings, but my two older phones appeared to be blank. Neither would give me anything when I hit refresh either.
I decided that since PagePlus uses Verizon that their SMSC was probably the one I needed, but that did not solve it either.
At the moment I am restoring my 4.3 stock rom. It works, so I will see if I can check the SMSC in there. Does it make any sense that I can restore a rom and have it work, yet when I put a new rom on it does not? I guess I did find several post detailing similar results back when IC was new. Maybe I am wrong about the page plus SMSC and that is my issue.
Thanks for the time and effort!
Mike
It could be a problem of the specific rom. Did you try other roms?
Does the stock rom flashing of 4.4.2 work now? If not, make sure you use the backport usb, not the front ones.

It is driving me batty that I cannot install a bloat free rom and have texting working... I think I am going to have to devote some energy into learning how to debloat this rom. I have Titanium Pro, so I think it is just a matter of taking some time.

I have tried 2 or 3 different roms. Phoenix lately and Golden eye before that.
I downloaded a stock 4.4.2, but it stuck on the Samsung screen. Scared me that I had her locked up tight... I had an issue yesterday with it not coming back from a nandroid too... I had a copy on my external card though and recovered from there as well.
I am not sure if I had a USCC stock 4.4.2 when I was doing that odin attempt. I asked on a teamuscellar page if there is a stock 4.4.2 for the s4 yet, but had not seen a reply yet.
Thanks for the tip on the back port. I will give that a go when I try again. My previous message said I was bailing.. but I am really not good at giving up. =) Thanks again!

Do you have this model?

Because I see that U.S. Cellular has the Mk2 modem you talk about. Maybe you have the Galaxy S 4 (SCH-R970)? Could that be possible. Maybe that is why everything fails and why you can't text.

Yes, that is it. I am not sure how I started thinking I had the I9505 instead of the R970. I must have seen a post somewhere that linked them. I wonder how similar the hardware is. The roms I tried were sweet, just no texting.
Thanks so much for helping me solve this!

I think this [ link ]is the stock image for the 970 that I tried in Odin and had it stay on the Samsung screen. I will download again, check the md5, and give it another go from a back port usb.
I did notice that the post you led me to was in the S4 i9500, I9505, etc forum. Is it possible my R970 is also a i9505?
Thanks,
Mike
I don't think you can use the i9505 roms.
After you flash your rom, try to do a wipe data from the stock recovery. I think it will boot then.

Worked like a champ! Thanks tons. Can't believe I spent more than a week thinking I had a different phone. Amazing I did not brick it with the different roms I threw on there. Texting and everything is groovy as can be!
Thanks again!

FYI: Received an update on my LG G3 Model LG-D851 T-Mobile variant which broke root v

I won a pre-retail release of the LG G3 on T-mobile from a contest that was done on the Android subreddit on Reddit.
When Towelroot came out, I tried it to see and to my surprise, it worked.
Yesterday afternoon I saw a notification for a system update from build 09D to 10C which I installed.

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Afterwards I no longer had root and trying Towelroot also no longer worked.
I tried all other LG G3 posted root methods as well from here on XDA for other G3 variants and none work as I cannot get adb recovery to stay up. I can do "adb reboot recovery" from Windows which will reboot and show the laying down green android robot for only a second but then reboots back into regular mode instantly.
I did a fully factory reset via power and volume down until you see logo then you let got of both then do both again right away just like on prior LG's. Then I tried all methods of rooting again but nothing works so far.
I have no clue what else the update was intended for but it's clear it was if for no other reason, done to patch the Towelroot exploit.
Sadly its still on 4.4.2 even after the update. Kind of surprised they didn't at least take the time to update the OS to the latest 4.4.4 build which I was really hoping was what the update was for since I have the dreaded 4.2.2 cannot write to external MicroSD card issue that was fixed in 4.4.4 and was the primary reason I rooted the phone in the first place.
I also noticed on a clean factory reinstall that ART will not enable. I thought that it might of been due to being rooted and using Xposed prior but this now disproves that theory.
Just sharing for those that are about to get their G3's on T-mobile in the coming weeks and looking to root. If you're on 09D build when you receive yours and want to root, leave it alone and Towelroot should work fine until the community can find a workaround for the 10C build.
Have you tried the upgrade repair in the LG PC suite and then tested towelroot again?
Since you have a phone in hand, can you check what LTE and H+ bands you have on the phone?
Looking to get it for AT&T and from T-mobiles website, it doesn't show all the bands like the GS5
I thought T-mobiles phones are typically better about not plugging up stuff like bootloaders and root... hopefully there will be a workaround.

I'm not familiar with this as this is my first LG phone but I can google around and look into it and give it a shot.
Edit: This phone is listed, not sure if I can just pick another model but still accomplish this?

PC Suite itself only has one version, pick another model, download it, let the application update itself then plug in your phone and see if its recognised.

After fighting with getting LG PC Suite working and detecting my phone, it does show the correct device info and current build of my phone but I can't complete running under the "phone" menu in the LG PC Suite app the repair upgrade errors or software upgrade options. It actually says there's an upgrade available then shows current build which is whats on there now and new version but that info is just blank but has a upgrade option, which if I click it, it acts like its going to do something then fails with some generic error message.
Guess I'm going to have to wait this out until its officially released.
One other oddity I found was I saw this other LG app called LGMobile Support Tool. That app also detects the phone but says TEST_GPIN on the top left next to a phone looking symbol. I've never used this app before but if that's what this app is indicating about this specific phone it makes me wonder if this is some developer like build and the reason it's so hard to get anything done...
Some tips
Hello, All.
If you can get the kdz firmware for your G3 D851, extract it, you will have a list of .bin files.
and then - You need to find a G3 tot file, open it with WinHex, Copy the .bin files you extract from D851 kdz into the tot file.
most important, You need to get the rooted system.img file, patch it into the G3 TOT file with WinHex.
and then use lg tool to flsh this tot file.
It works on LG MS323. But this method takes hours of works. Not easy!
TMO G3 users who won the contest and have the phone already... your phone came with software v9...
someone needs to dump the partitions from this before taking the OTA. has anyone done this? is anyone still on v9?
to dump partitions root will be needed. any questions on how to dump, feel free to ask and i can walk u thru it in IRC or something.
to those that read this but do not have a tmo g3 with v9... spread the word.. or keep an eye out for the winners who may have one of these devices.

So this is a bit unexpected but the new update does allow writing to my micro SD it'd seem.
In the prior build I couldn't and had to root to work around it but in this update I can write to my micro SD even though I can't root it.
Just picked up a new G3 today from tmob and cannot get root to work. Any ideas

SM-N915S/K Root

Root confirmed working for Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Exynos Korea SM-N915 "S" via the legend Chainfire CF-Auto-Root
FOR THE MOST CURRENT ROOT METHOD, PLEASE REFER TO THIS THREAD >> [INFO] [CF-Auto-Root] Galaxy Note Edge SM-N915
WARNING : KNOX COUNTER WILL BE TRIPPED AND WARRANTY VOID - THERE IS NO CURRENTLY KNOWN METHOD TO RESET THE COUNTER OR ROOT WITHOUT TRIPPING KNOX !!
I used : SM-N910"K" (Korea, Exynos): CF-Auto-Root-treltektt-treltektt-smn910k.zip . Another user in this thread had reported that using the SM-N910 "S" Cf-Autoroot failed to boot, so I instead tried the "K" and success. All THANKS & credit to @Chainfire, if you require the stock recovery for SM-N915S, I'd gladly send it to you if you require it to make a formal Cf-Autoroot for our device.
Root has also been confirmed using the same method and file for SM-N915"K" here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56761632&postcount=34
Method:
1. Advised: Have a full stock firmware package available (just in case) [sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com]
2. Have Samsung USB drivers installed on Windows PC (Easiest way is DL KIES from Samsung)
3. Flash via Odin [I used Odin3 v3.07 - attachment] as per Chainfire's instructions !
** If unsure how to use Odin, there are many guides found by searching !
4. Wait around 30 secs after flash (stuck on boot screen), and hopefully device will boot.
5. Open SuperSU app and update SU if prompted
Note: You will have installed stock Android system recovery for SM-N910K. This should not affect the operation of the ROM.

That's what I need, there's a lot of Korean apps on my phone. I have disabled some but they still show up here an there. Another very annoying thing is the dailer, it has Korean text on it which I want to remove as I only want English.
I'd be happy if I could remove some of those apps, and add the yahoo and twitter panels.
Do you think I'd able to flash an international version rom my Edge at some point?
Thanks.

I am unsure on that. The processor is different I believe and that would be a main thing.
But with root you would be able to change most of the apps and you might be able to set up the build.prop to a USA one that should let you add yahoo and get to the USA panel store.

Apart from removing a few "useless" apps, able to use various root type apps (properly) such as Greenify, Titanium, Synapse etc.
But the main reason is to control a custom kernel I intend to build (time permitting). Also remove knox features and set SELinux permissive for Titanium Backup app to work correctly.
In future, I might look at a very basic ROM, but NOT on my to-do list

It's OT and nothing to do with my general statement of intention to develop this beast (when I get my hands on it).

Lenovo TAB 4 8 (TB-8504F) Firmware catastrophe

I've recently been having issues with a tablet device of mine (Lenovo Tab 4 8 TB-8504F) which I tried to downgrade to Android Nougat from the latest and very unstable Android Oreo version that was on it using QPST and a "Stock Firmware" from FirmwareFile.com (Bad idea) The funny thing was.... It wasn't. I tried to go back using their official repair tool (Rescue and Smart Assistant) and I ended up with an even more broken version of Android Oreo with no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth capability. Now I'm stuck with a tablet with no internet access. I know for a fact that the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work, it's just I can't seem to find an actual official Firmware for my device. Hope someone can help.
They don't offer any repair tools(from what i know), they do give a tool to flash it though, format it using recovery then flash it using their tool, this did work for me, then i flashed patched magisk file, hope this helps.

follow the guide on how to use the flashing tool (you have to make it match the config with the rom that's why it's broken), It should unbrick your device although it will wipe your data since it will flash your entire device. Make sure that the firmware also matches with your device.

I would imagine that their official tool https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/downloads/ds101291-rescue-and-smart-assistant-lmsa
would give me the correct one. It downloads it from their official servers using the Serial Number S/N to identify what you should get. but with my problems, I think you can tell it doesn't work. hence why I'm stuck.
But in recent hours I've managed to be able to get into TWRP (Bootloader is now also unlocked if useful), but whatever action I do e.g. Install .zip or Backup, it just has a scrolling bar and that's it. it does nothing else. I have no idea why it's doing such an odd thing. despite using the "Best Version" for my device according to a comment on a post I've seen in past.

neat, okay now I know where I went wrong. but firmwarefile.com doesn't have any QcomDloader firmwares that I can actually download. I need to get a link to one. would you be able to see whether you can find one that works? (Make sure it ends with ROW Cause that's what the original firmware was)
The only ones I can find are on Google Drive and they end with this page...
Strange enough It's been like this for over a year and a half. (how long I've had the device like this)
And that's why I never used the tool cause it has a lot harder of firmware to get.
