SM-N915S/K Root - Note Edge General

Root confirmed working for Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Exynos Korea SM-N915 "S" via the legend Chainfire CF-Auto-Root
FOR THE MOST CURRENT ROOT METHOD, PLEASE REFER TO THIS THREAD >> [INFO] [CF-Auto-Root] Galaxy Note Edge SM-N915
WARNING : KNOX COUNTER WILL BE TRIPPED AND WARRANTY VOID - THERE IS NO CURRENTLY KNOWN METHOD TO RESET THE COUNTER OR ROOT WITHOUT TRIPPING KNOX !!
I used : SM-N910"K" (Korea, Exynos): CF-Auto-Root-treltektt-treltektt-smn910k.zip . Another user in this thread had reported that using the SM-N910 "S" Cf-Autoroot failed to boot, so I instead tried the "K" and success. All THANKS & credit to @Chainfire, if you require the stock recovery for SM-N915S, I'd gladly send it to you if you require it to make a formal Cf-Autoroot for our device.
Root has also been confirmed using the same method and file for SM-N915"K" here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56761632&postcount=34
Method:
1. Advised: Have a full stock firmware package available (just in case) [sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com]
2. Have Samsung USB drivers installed on Windows PC (Easiest way is DL KIES from Samsung)
3. Flash via Odin [I used Odin3 v3.07 - attachment] as per Chainfire's instructions !
** If unsure how to use Odin, there are many guides found by searching !
4. Wait around 30 secs after flash (stuck on boot screen), and hopefully device will boot.
5. Open SuperSU app and update SU if prompted
Note: You will have installed stock Android system recovery for SM-N910K. This should not affect the operation of the ROM.

So Cf-Autoroot from Note 4 works for SM-N915 "S". If so which exact one ?
If confirmed for "S" model, would be one less thing for me to look at. ..... I can proceed with a kernel

I am not sure if it was for the S model.
I remember the Japan model was first to be rooted and there is a youtube video on it.
But unsure about the "S" model.
Didnt see the S in the frost post.

So glad to hear that there will be someone else on here with SM-N915S model.
Silly question, but what would be the benefit of rooting this model of Edge right now? I ask coz there's no custom rom available atm.

Main use is for root apps and deleting system apps.
You can then manual theme things.
After my samsung s2 i just stuck with stock rooted roms. Removed things i didnt want.

That's what I need, there's a lot of Korean apps on my phone. I have disabled some but they still show up here an there. Another very annoying thing is the dailer, it has Korean text on it which I want to remove as I only want English.
I'd be happy if I could remove some of those apps, and add the yahoo and twitter panels.
Do you think I'd able to flash an international version rom my Edge at some point?
Thanks.

I am unsure on that. The processor is different I believe and that would be a main thing.
But with root you would be able to change most of the apps and you might be able to set up the build.prop to a USA one that should let you add yahoo and get to the USA panel store.

Apart from removing a few "useless" apps, able to use various root type apps (properly) such as Greenify, Titanium, Synapse etc.
But the main reason is to control a custom kernel I intend to build (time permitting). Also remove knox features and set SELinux permissive for Titanium Backup app to work correctly.
In future, I might look at a very basic ROM, but NOT on my to-do list

The processor being different is my main concern, let's hope some people will address this.
The edge is the best piece gadget I have ever owned. I'd be sorted if these issues were sorted.

A basic rom that includes all essential Note functions would be awesome on the edge.

Post in Q&A where your "question" belongs.
It's OT and nothing to do with my general statement of intention to develop this beast (when I get my hands on it).
I'm going to start taking a look at kernel sources sometime today/tomorrow, so I get a head start before the device arrives (Friday? )

[GUIDE] Root for Galaxy S4 Active! (SGH-i537 ~ AT&T) [UPDATED 7/8/2013 @ 10PM MST]
-------------------------
This guide is to help people root their Galaxy S4 Active devices. Model SGH-i537 on AT&T.
Credit goes to geohot for the release of activeroot apk!
-------------------------
1. First go to Settings and click the "More" tab. Then go into security and check "Unknown Sources."

}
2. Visit http://geohot.com/activeroot from your device and click the lampda picture to download the apk file.
3. Run the apk. It should give you a message telling you that you have root. Worked almost instantly for me.
4. Visit the Play Store and download SuperSU. (NOTE: You MUST download and use SuperSU to manage superuser permissions, nothing else. Only SuperSU currently can circumvent Samsung's "root blocker" in the kernel.)
5. Open the Super SU app and update binaries.
6. Optional. Donate. I contributed $10 to the original bounty, but really... this is a quick and simple method. Toss him $5 bucks if this root helps you out!

Kill AT&T's OTA updater before it kills you!
Use a root enabled file explorer (Like Root Explorer) and navigate to: /system/app/
Rename or delete wssyncmldm.apk

======================================
F.A.Q.
======================================
Q: What does activeroot do for my phone?
A: It gives you root access to the phone's file system. Even the Android system files.
Q: What can I do with root?
A: You can run applications that require root access to function. Apps like Titanium Backup, can back up all of your apps and settings and save it in your phone's storage/SD card. You can also freeze (disable) or delete pre-installed apps that came with the phone (AT&T/Samsung bloatware).
Q. Is root dangerous?
A. Well, it does give you access to files you were not supposed to be allowed to manipulate. If you accidentally delete files that are important, you could cause the phone to crash and prevent booting.
Q. Can I install a custom ROM?
A. As of 7/8/13, the answer is no. Not yet. To be able to install a custom ROM, you need to be able to install a custom recovery. As of now, the bootloader of the original Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 Active are still locked. The original GS4 currently has an venerability in it's bootloader that allows for an exploit (called Loki exploit) to be used that enables installation of custom recoveries and ROMS. This vulnerability has been patched since the release of the GS4 Active, and our phones cannot take advantage of the Loki exploit.
Q. Will the GS4A's bootloader EVER be unlocked?
A. No one knows for sure. The Galaxy S4 Active is a niche product available exclusively on AT&T in the USA. It will never reach the sales numbers that the original Galaxy S4 will achieve because of this. Since the original GS4 will be the phone in more users' hands... the same can be said for the hands of developers. A developer who bought the original GS4, is not likely to also buy a GS4A. That being said, the original GS4 is a very popular device and people are working hard on it's bootloader. The GS4 and the GS4A are similar enough that if the GS4 gets unlocked, luck may shine on us and the method may unlock our phones as well. But, as the old saying goes, "I wouldn't hold your breath."
So, what is the difference between active root and passive root?

Not working for me. Neither Super User or Super SU will work. Says I am missing an SU binary.

I just wanted to make this perfectly clear: DO NOT use this kernel on a Verizon variant (almost impossible as it hasn't been officially released). This kernel is not signed and the bootloader will error out. You'll then be soft bricked until you flash a signed kernel in Odin.
Visual proof...first the signed unsecure kernel that allowed first root on the VZN SGS4 (notice the signature at the bottom):

Now your boot.img....which is missing the signature:
Again, please folks...do NOT flash this if you don't have an unlocked bootloader and an original kernel backup. Things could get REAL UGLY, REAL FAST.
Confirmed variants for various countries
SM-N9002 Dual Sim variant for Chinese Market
SM-N9005 LTE variant
SM-N900K for KT Telecom South Korea
SM-N900L for LGU+ South Korea
SM-N900S for SK Telecom South Korea

SM-N900T for T-Mobile USA
SM-N900V for Verizon Wireless
SM-N900,International variant

Since it's now VERY obvious you are not the author of this kernel, I will try to explain what I think happened. The person that created this kernel probably (and I say probably because I'm not going to waste the time and bandwidth to download 1.9GB of software I don't need) downloaded the leaked firmware and extracted the boot.img. He then made two minor adjustments that gave root access and repackaged the kernel. This probably took all of two minutes. I haven't looked at the original boot.img, but there's a 99% chance this gives root on a N9005.
There's a 50/50 chance it will work on any other N3 variant that doesn't have a locked bootloader. It depends entirely on how closely the keys match. In the US, this means Sprint, T-mobile, and sometimes AT&T. The S4's bootloader was locked by AT&T and I'm expecting the N3's to be as well. Verizon is almost always locked unless you buy a developer edition phone. A locked bootloader will fail to boot an unsigned kernel and the phone will be soft bricked.
This is one of the reasons unlocking a bootloader is so important to people that enjoy customizing their Android phones. It allows for custom recovery installation, custom kernel (which can then be unsigned), and custom ROM installation. Root can still be achieved with a locked bootloader, but it is much more difficult.

Has anyone tried rooting the SM-N900K?
Does the galaxy3root dot com method work?
Terrified of trying this for fear that it will brick my device.

[Q] Office 365 Install Issues

Ola
I'm trying to install Office 365 (have sub) on my Note 3.
It is in the play store.
However it only shows of my owned devices, the Galaxy Nexus is compatible while the Note 3 is not.
Can anyone suggest an alternate route to getting it installed?
I have X-note15 installed on my n900w8.
Thanks,

----- EDIT -------
Identified "possible" issue. However I need to know now... how can I "adjust" my store info on the phone to re become the N900W8 ?
See screenshot below for reasoning. Disregard the other phones... I went through 6 "galaxy infuse" phones with work, all with same issues... (boot up, green tint, red, orange, yellow, blue, you name it, I saw it).

Thanks,
You can edit your Build.prop to show the correct Model number.
It may also be a DPI issue, if so set it back to default (480)

How would I edit "build.prop" ?
And i'm just rebooting phone to 480 dpi, will re log into play store and check there.
*Update* even 480dpi, instead of any other alternate dpi, no change after rebooting.
Is there x time I have to wait? Or just reboot a few times, hit a few cell towers, come home and try again?
Thanks for the help!

Use root explorer to edit the build.prop -- find the model number and change it to N900W8 hit save and reboot. Should be OK . just in case do a backup cause if your build.prop gets messed up you'll need to flash stock again to fix

Right here? and Put exactly all caps, N900W8 no spaces?
edit I noticed the region is GB (great britain?) Can I change that to CA / Canada?
See pic below.
Yep that's the place. Now I can't remember if the Canadian version is N900W8 or N900w8 - I think it's all caps though like the other models

Ok,
Next portion:
GB / CA? for region?
And...
I have backed up in the recovery to both SDcard and ExtSDCard (I believe they are called).
Have 64gb microSD class 10.
Figured backup twice, can't hurt to have a backup to a backup ...
CA for region since it's the .ca model
Edit: yep two backups can't hurt

Eon's it feels like... I backed up my pc... 85 dvd's later... organized, catagorized...a-z...etc...
2nd backup is taking longer to the extSDcard. Almost done... md5 sum fun...
About to boot and try the edit.
Will report once done... And if successful...or not... huzza!
P.S. are you advertising "paranoid rom" ? ^_^ I had it for my Gnex for ages, worth it.
UPDATE
It stayed entered, but had no change to the play store (pro or con).
I noticed the highlighted zones. Suggestions?
Yeah I'm using PA on my N5.
Hmm, I'm a little stumped. Need to have a think at what the issue may be.

I could start changing all the n9005's to N900W8 .
I can also change the N900W8 to N900w8...
Rather curious what might be a solid fix for this oddity... As my work uses office 365, and I wouldn't mind using it up front.

Checked mine and all instances of N9005 on his phone were all N900W8 ( rom is meant for a N900W8 btw ). Now I can't pinpoint exactly which entry Playstore uses to determine the model number on the phone ( am really a tech noob ) but it shows up exactly as N900W8 on compatibility list. As the op said, he can try changing all the N9005 instances to N900W8 but can't really tell if something is going to break somewhere as this is a tricky portion to mess with. Btw, the location GB doesn't have any bearing on the model number, mine is the same.

So,
Funny thing...
Microsoft Note: Installable via play store on phone and online pc web browsers.
MS office Mobile is not...
Backed up to sd card and extcard.
I changed all the 9000 to 900W8
Literally in the build.prop
Saved, rebooted.
Still working, and now as mentioned, Note is installed, Office mobile is not...
?
Fairly confused how I can gain access to 1, but not both.

Yes, it was called root de la vega... But, honestly... Don't hold your breath... Root de la vega was working on an earlier rom version of the Note 3... After that... Samsung patched the roms, and there has been nothing ever since...

Such a shame at what Samsung has done. They were so friendly up until the s4. We'll see I'll test drive the note make sure everything is in proper order then root it. Has samsung been known to honor warranty with the flag set if it's obvious manufacture defect?

It depends on the country from what i understand..
Imo if you show them that you know your rights, then you can "make" them honor their warranty...
And always always ask to speak with the manager...
Researching your rights as a consumer on the web (depending on your country) also helps a lot.
Im 90% certain that there's a EU directive that forbids sammy to pull these bull____ on us... Especially if we are asking them to fix a defect that is non-knox related...
In my other Samsung devices, rooting by Chainfire disabled screen mirroring. Can someone who has rooted check that, please?

Lol I'll start my research [emoji14]
it depends on the carrier, and how you talk to them about your issue; I have NEVER had a warranty issue for ANY phone, and that was with Sprint, ATT, and now T-Mobile. Can't speak to Verizon, as I hate them with a passion, and wouldn't take a free phone if they offerred one.
every time I returned a phone for a warranty issue, they were always unlocked, rooted, or s-off
here again, if you are nice, and polite, you shouldn't have issues
if you come across as a jerk, well, you know what will happen..

Actually, there were other methods after root de la vega. I have a method here for the Note 3 that uses towelroot and an older vulnerable kernel. You simply flash the older kernel in odin, use towelroot, then flash the new current kernel back and you're rooted.
Don't think of Knox being tripped as a loss of warranty- think of it as a loss of Knox! Knox is an app on your phone that will no longer work (ever!) if you trip Knox. Research Knox and make sure you have no need for it before you decide to get rid of that functionality. If you work at a company that lets you use your own phone to receive work e-mail etc and would like to keep apps and e-mail on a separate secure container "work side" of your phone (Knox) then don't trip Knox. If you don't care about Knox, trip it and forget it.
It's just not fair to people to leave this valuable piece of information out when telling them to root or in the how-to root threads. They can't revert after the case and some don't realize they need it until they present their phones to their IT staff at work and are told their phone's Knox integrity has been compromised -meaning it's no longer able to be used for that purpose (Knox warranty 0x1). Also, if you just want a secure container for some personal apps and pics etc, you can use that Knox container for that without actually using any work information.
Here's a quick video to demonstrate Knox 2.0s use.

HI,
While in the process of resetting my phone, I checked for update and was informed of a new download. After installing it, the software version is now L720VPSGPL1. I googled this but nothing came up. Anyone else getting this update? I'm in the U.S. if that makes any difference.
Thanks

HI,
I'm from Russia, I also received an update to version L720VPSGPL1
Sorry for my English
Found a link through Bing but not sure who operates this site:
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=search&searchValue=SPH-L720
I received it too last week and posted in the rdf forum. I too haven't been able to find any info about it with. Sprint hasn't posted a change log either.
Update is available, but the update failed because apparently something changed my build.prop. Anyone know where to find unmodified files from the original version?
Is this version rootable? If updating a rooted phone, does it unroot?

It will fail and possibly brick your phone if you try to update with a modified system (root, custom recovery, etc). Download the OK3 tar from www.sammobile.com and flash with Odin. Then you can update to PL1. From what I've seen it's only a security update.

Managed to dump an unmodified build.prop from stock ROM. Did a hex compare to mine, only difference is 2 hex bytes appended, 0A 0A. I guess some app that needed root modified my build.prop and when I uninstalled it, it changed it back but not cleanly. Anyway, copied clean build.prop to /system, then let the phone update and it succeeded. Figured it wouldn't hurt anything as I could re-flash with Odin if it bricked. Lucked out and phone update succeeded. Now on PL1 and didn't even lose root.
My wife is traveling to Russia in about 2 weeks. Wanted to UNLOCK the phone so she can buy a local SIM card and use her phone while visiting. Called Sprint and they said they unlocked phone, but not sure how to tell what (if anything) changed.
Is there a method to SIM unlock (and/or carrier unlock) with the PL1 baseband software?

There is a program called GTUpdate2_v3.1.8.apk that can unlock PL1 on a rooted phone. I think it's not a free software, but someone posted a link to it on the forums once.
I think without root, the program should at least tell you if the phone is unlocked.

It might be hard to find as the developer has asked all links to it be taken down.
Got root using cf auto root and confirmed it with root checker and busy box. Also installed twrp through the twrp app and no brick yet. Don't know which rom I can install yet. v11.0 is just a small update, so you have to flash the full ROM first which is V10.9. There is also the Bare Bones version which is just super debloated.
I'm confused on the versioning. Alphabetically, VPS comes before VPU, so I was thinking that "VPSGPL1" was older. Obviously versioning rules come fast & loose, but I'm curious what the VPS indicates that is different from VPU.
So then is this the correct order for different modems?
Code:
L720VPUFNAE
L720VPUGOD2
L720VPUGOK3
L720VPSGPL1
