Community development strength - Redmi Note 8 Pro Real Life Review

You're a power user. Can the Redmi Note 8 Pro keep up? Rate this thread to express how "healthy" the development scene is for the Redmi Note 8 Pro. A higher rating indicates available root methods, kernels, and custom ROMs.

Yes 8 pro can keep up with every day of use, bring it on.

I was about to buy this phone, giving Mediatek a chance... But then the bricks started happening, and ROMs are not showing up yet. Why Mediatek can't keep up still? I just can't understand. It's a shame, but I won't be buying this phone.

I have RN8 pro and i am happy with it! Mediatek is fast and stable, I am still giving chance.
- Brick problem is with Android 10 and I think it will get better with official Xiaomi update.
- Gcam is working, it needs just more configuration.
- GPS and WIFI are great, battery too.
Looking forward seeing more ROMs and development.

The redmi note 8 pro can do more than keep up it's a great device. source code has been released and phones have been sent out to devs and TWRP custom recovery is working good as well as root. xiaomi is pushing the mediatek SOC with them knowing there will be development for there chips. I'm very impressed by this phone in every way it's performance, daily useage, stability, battery performance, screen is great for ips lcd, gorrila glass 5 front & rear and the camera has blown every phone iv'e owned out of the water. The conventional SD chip has development across the board so sit back and watch the development happen.

I've have the phone for three weeks now. Seems to be a good phone. My privacy interest prevents me from using the phone until a custom ROM is available (I personally wouldn't use Google services and miui services). I unlocked the bootloader (waiting time was 168 hours) and now I'm going to wait for a custom ROM and that's fine.
But I did a few tests with the camera and the camera is really fast and the quality is great.

ADB/Fastboot tools debloat
Don´t wait just use "ADB/Fastboot tools debloat" to remove or freeze the apps
I did that to be aware of my privacy like you

i think no...redmi note 8 pro will be bricked and need authorized account to flash...this hard for development when its bricked

I think Xiaomi.eu official statement say IT clearly. No support and avoid MTK chips for future.

Nah. I wanna use a custom ROM and afwall, xprivacylua, etc. But thanks.

Do we have any news about development and new ROMs coming?

No one knows. And that's the problem. There is NO reliable way to get updates about this phone. None of the so called developers have a work in progress thread where they share development. So people tend to speculate.

Just bought a Note 8 Pro...i'm hoping that some developers love this phone too

Yes there is big movement.
Share this article, make post on Twitter to @XiaoMi and contact YouTobers. We are waiting for response of Xiaomi now.

I really wanted to buy this phone. Cheap with awesome specs but custom ROMs and kernels are a must. I hope this brick issue gets solved quick.

We have to fight, pushing Xiaomi to work harder.

Yes! I still have hope for this device even after it did brick once. Keep pushing forward and they will surely listen to our demand.

Sadly, some people doesn't have that much time or patience for such. :/

Happy to contribute to crowdfunding for development of Lineage OS and other Android distros on the Pro. Looks like a great phone with a lot of potential for the price!

OVERALL: Community Development Strength

You're a power user. Can the Note5 keep up? Rate this thread to express how "healthy" the development scene is for the Note5. A higher rating indicates available root methods, kernels, and custom ROMs.

Samsung hasn't made things particularly easier for developers, but at least things like root aren't significantly harder for the end-user. You have Noble Kernel for root, Official TWRP is available, and Xposed for ARM64 TouchWiz works on the Note5 as well. It's still early to tell, but right now I am running Xposed with no problems. The multitasking fix for the S6 (DHA/FHA in the build.prop) works on this phone and makes the 4GB of RAM shine as they should. The microSD card slot and removable battery losses are thoroughly felt when flashing and transferring files, but the storage speed in this device makes most procedures easier too. I am content with my setup and can't wait to see more. Custom Kernels with better governors would be great, and that plus optimized custom ROMs could fix many of Samsung's decisions.
Any more info about community development for this device?
It's new
Other devs will make their way over @sac23, I'd love to see something from you over here. We got a damn good rom with @tdunham and his team, that's a hell of a good start! Development for the note 5 will definitely keep getting better! :good:
Good times ahead!
If anyone has heard of @sac23, you know his work. If you don't, I suggest checking it out, we'll be getting a new visitor soon....
XDA are very good development family, they do really great job, but samsung just keeps the Exynos CPUs locked, so no major rom updates available (E.g. my fav CM).
The community here, we'll for the Verizon variant of this phone is good, not very good or excellent but it's good. We generally don't flame each other or any bullying. We help each other with our thoughts about best case, car mount, wireless charger etc. Even though we do not have root, recovery or roms. It's good. I imagine if we did root, recovery and roms. These forum's would be hella busy for rom development.

Mate 9 Custom ROMS

I;m a very happy user of RomAur but it seems like development of ROMs has stagnated. As someone with little talent, I can only be humble and understand.
When someone as adept as ajsmsg78 vanishes the scene, who did metal gymnastics on other Huawei devices, it would see the arcane complexity is making this device dead in the water for custom rom installers.
I like the phone, and the many quirks don't bother me (much) but this may be the first phone I use less than a year looking into the other device forums with great activity.
Recent huawei phones dont get much development into later in its life cycle if at all.
Assuming you did you research, this shouldnt be a surprise.
Huawei devices cured my flashoholic issues. I personally buy nexus/pixel devices for custom rom stuff.
Kangvip is where most of this stuff comes from.

As a prior owner I actually did first hand, prior phones had more activity and extended life. Am I surprised, by only one ROM that isn't end of life... somewhat - but thanks for your criticism of my research skills.
I believe the issue is increasing barriers. I realize the groundswell for Samsung's keeping my old Note 4 thriving has a larger base of users, even with the impediments Samsung puts in place. I haven't been a pixie yet, but I'm glad you cured your romaholic tendencies.
In my opinion, coming from a Note 4, the less "custom" roms the better
There's a LOT of different Note 4 roms. It seems like they have a few cherries here and there, but the main difference seems to be the theme/rom customisation app they use.
I wouldn't mind a few more custom roms though... Not that I'd use them, I'm happy with rooted stock. Only "modification" I use is a wallpaper changer, and Floatify for nicer looking notifications/notifications at lock screen xD
I'm sure we'll get custom kernels soon though, when Huawei releases kernel source.
I guess Huawei did a good job with EMUI. I couldn't stand TW or Sense so I had to use CM whenever it was possible.

Not enough love for the Max 2?

Why is there so little love for this device?
there is only 5 threads in the dev subforum.
2 of them is about recovery
1 is on unofficial LineageOS
1 on a DPI changing patch and the last one on beta MIUI 9
thinking to myself if i've decided on the less loved device lol
Xiaomi has not released the kernel source. This makes development challenging. Things are probably going to change when that happens in roughly 5 months (based on delay to release Mi Max sources).

I was an earlier obsessive ROM/kernel flasher and have now sort of settled down. I honestly feel that stock roms are good enough for most general use cases. What I would suggest is to get on the Global MIUI beta for the weekly updates. Nothing offers more stabiility (in terms of connectivity, bluetooth, GPS, etc) for a device as the stock rom and I am saying this from experience.

Thank you for the inputs.
I played around for a day / two but MIUI, it is just a little too messy.
Settings seems to be all over the place.
I've been on android devices since cupcake and always like the simplicity of aosp or lineage in this case ever since cyan. That is y I'm looking forward to lineage official support. I guess it'll happen, just gotta wait till kernel source is releaseed. :fingers-crossed:

I agree. With my first android phones, custom roms could be an improvement. But now adays, theyre usually worse. I have had a redmi note 2, redmi note 3, mi max and now mi max 2. Miui-roms has been the best rom for all of them. especially battery life and camera.
I root, delete apps I dont want, choose the launcher and theme I want and I can get the look I prefer.

MIUI is not that bad at all in my opinion. Give it a try a little more. It's not bloated, interface is relatively clean. I just don't like that dodgy built-in cleaner app.

it'll come a day, whereby things will just be like @praveen6585 .. i'll get tired of following updates and flashing this unlocking that and just settle with what comes out of the box. there's just too much options nowadays.. and too much to read into lol.
There will be more mi max 2 buy by Indians as there is huge discount in flipkart. So future development will be good for this giant.

Mi A2 slower than a Redmi Note 5?

Hey guys,
how is it possible that a SD 636 is faster than a 660 with Android One?
In this article you have different videos that show different Speed Test, and in the last ones, the Note 5 beats the Mi A2:
https://newesc.com/test-velocidad-xiaomi-a2-vs-xiaomi-redmi-note-5/
he-s comparing apples and pears.
whyred has been out for months now, plenty of time for miui for it to get optimizations and improvements (it's also probably the main redmi device that they work on miui10, complete with the new ai engine loading algorithms that learn your usage patters to speed up your phone).
and even without that, any sort of miui vs android one comparisons are irrelevant if you ask me... nobody ever said miui is slow, some just prefer a clean android instead.

Every company should launch the best optimized product they can, because the first month is the most important in sells. If you launch a new product that cost more but is not faster than an older one, you are gonna lose customers. Easy.
Beside, the argument i hear a lot of: "With time is gonna be faster", is complete nonsense for new customers. I don't want warranties on the future, if I'm buying something NOW, I want it to be the best NOW.
"nobody ever said miui is slow" that's true, but you can see a lot of youtubers saying that they prefer Android one because is "faster" and "more optimized"

i don't think i agree with you that the first month is the most important for sales. and we need to work a bit on the definition of faster. starting apps isn't necessarily the benchmark to use. try running miui for a few weeks, switch to a custom/stable aosp of sorts for another 2 weeks and come back to miui. then decide if a phone is slower or faster on android one versus miui. some people like miui others like android. it's always a matter of preference. i personally couldn't use miui any more after the first time i switched os versions like this. it just felt wrong.
L.E. the storage speed difference could also be down to encryption being on or off on the 2 terminals. or due to the A/B system of the mi a2. there could be services running on the jasmine that the whyred is not running at the moment. it can be that miui is really better optimized to start apps. if your definition of faster is that then get yourself a whyred. it's your choice to make! always remember that!
L.E.2 "I want it to be the best NOW." you know these are all budget-y phones we're talking about, right?

well miui is device dependent (no plans to make a gsi style image that runs on any treble phone. if xiaomi decided to make one it would be pretty awesome though!) so you can;t run the whyred miui on jasmine. you could maybe port the one from wayne (mi 6x) without too many issues, in fact i think i saw a thread on en.miui.com.
gsi images might work on both yes since they're both shipping with 8.1 (but there's not really needed on jasmine, it's already "clean" android).
but yes, if you want a fair comparison, a gsi running on both might be a better test.

I wish someone would have told Microsoft that about 25 yrs ago... every new version of the OS (that they rushed to market) had 1,000s of bugs that were fixed later on. I don't think mfg's really care about what you want "NOW".

indeed, sorry, what I mean is the wayne / mi 6x image, same device with miui
There is bunch of tests on youtube comparing note 5 pro and mi A2, and you can see that in many A2 is clean winner.
So, I believe that this tests depends heavily on tester and apps which they choose to use in the tests.

Not sure what all the fuss is here. This is a budget phone which is plenty fast and has great features for the price. If you want speed and fastest phone you will have to pay at least twice as much. I am coming from an SD835 phone and I hardly noticeable the difference at all.
As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
Ah these are crap test and YouTubers, better trust C4etech, Techdroider, revatlas

It is possible to tweak android to load faster apps, you can find on youtube test between S9+ and P20pro.
S9+ has about 240000 antutu score, while P20pro has about 200000.
P20pro beats S9+ in all standard apps and games, because android learned what apps user use the most, and cache them somehow, leaving S9+ in the dust, in real time usage.
It dosen't mean that it is really faster, but it is tweaked with smarter OS.
In "our" case, note 5 pro vs mi a2, of course, it is nonsense, mi a2 is faster, but miui also can be tweaked.
Also, custom roms are usually also tweaked and are faster then stock ones.

from my experience with the Redmi 4X MIUI is anyway pretty fast compared to Android One on my Mi A1, but rather lousy in regard of doing great shots.
there's other vantages of AOSP-based ROMs like RR, lineage, etc. Now my choice was the Mi A2 only due to the unlock process, improved cam, QC4.0 and CPU.
camera and microphone are definitely an improvement:

I don't see why it wouldn't. Xiaomi's snapdragon models seem to always have development since it's easy to unlock the bootloader. For development to thrive though, we have to wait till the kernel sources are released, which is about 2 months after release on average.

I disagree with your assertion. Even Redmi note 5 pro from three years ago, performs very well without lag on AOSP ROMs. And we all know that SD 662 on the POCO M3 is faster and better than SD 636 on RN5 Pro. So i believe that POCO M3 will perform greatly on AOSP based ROMs.

The miui roms of that time were loaded with bloadware and not very optimized, so any "clean" rom made an appreciable difference in performance.
Today it is not like that, the current miui roms are quite clean and highly optimized (and can be easily cleaned of the bloadware they carry).
There is not much difference apart from the security issues with the other cleaner android roms.
