Selfie quality - Google Pixel 4 XL Real Life Review

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Imo it's worse than my 2 xl, seems to be more loss of detail on human face pictures and more noise unless you adjust the dual exposure settings so as far as Google is saying point and click no it is not for the front camera in slightly darker environments and i don't mean pitch black just in the house without sunlight. I shall try and sort 2 pictures out comparing both.

Actually find my regular Note 10 to take better selfies. But the Pixel takes better overall pics in my tests. Was worried about the video compared to the note but I'm very happy with the Pixels video.

Yeah it's ****ing terrible I've just done a comparison, the 4 XL selfie is piss poor compared to my 2 XL, wow never expected this, shocking just shocking, the noisy purple hue image is the 4 XL, wtf is Google playing at?

I have no issues. Maybe.. just maybe whatever you're watching on TV was brighter between the shots? Looking at your couch the blue hue coming from your TV was much brighter meaning that wall was exposed to the brighter blue tint

Here's an actual selfie comparison comparison between the Pixel 2 XL and the Pixel 4 XL. As you can see in strong background lighting the Pixel 4 XL wins with better color saturation and of course wider view.

i think that loosing the AutoFocus on the front camera, has something to do with this.
Why no AF Google, why?

This is the reason, smaller sensor!
Bad quality in sharpness of the face
Very disappointed
Actually i prefer oneplus 7t/pro which i had with gcam very sharp front camera

Those specs don't mention the sensor size for the front facing Pixel 3. The mm is the lens size. The aperture is smaller on the 4 (2.0) compared to the 3 (1.8) but that mainly affects low light performance. I think it's the lack of AF is making the biggest difference. If you believe in DXO Mark reviews, which are pretty in-depth, for photos they do rank the 3 (99) better than the 4 (93) but the 4 is definitely better than the 2 (80) which, I think, still holds its own pretty well. Video is better on the 4 compared to the 2 and 3 though.

I have experienced the exact same problem... As soon as the lights get a bit low the camera turn blurry and noisy. my pixel 2xl is destroying my pixel 4xl selfies.Really hope this gets fix in the next update

I'm having the exact same issue for some reason even when I'm indoors with a certain level of light the slightest level of dark that enters the image suddenly makes the image fuzzy and grainy when taking selfies. I second the hope that the camera gets fixed in a future update as well.

Z5 camera VS Iphone6 plus, SGS6, LG G4, Z3

Here they did a test with most new phones including the Z5! Shame i cant link the photo's directly so you have to go to the link it self http://www.phonearena.com/news/First-Xperia-Z5-vs-iPhone-6-Plus-vs-S6-vs-Z3-vs-G4-camera-samples-comparison_id73408
The Z5 takes pretty awesome shots and its way better then the z3 camera. The colors look so much more correct and in some phones it beats the sgs6.
Edit:

the red on the iphone looks washed out or better said, the amount of light on the car is captured more on it. the z5 captures the real color from my perspective
In my opinion Z5 is better than Iphone 6+ and GS6, colors of the 2 is slightly saturated.
Regardless of color accuracy, the resolution increase still does not helps getting sharper images. There is too much noise reduction applied, especially compared to iPhone 6. Apple here does a decent job although I'd rather have much more noise and no NR applied in camera. Worst offender is LG, which applies an insane post-NR sharpening.
I think we should wait for production samples and hopefully some 3rd party app that can leverage better on this new sensor. Otherwise there is no real advantage against Samsung or Apple.
As for color accuracy, it really comes down to the app and how much processing is done. On my screen (which is calibrated, but it's not best quality panel) and to my eye Z5 has decent overall color rendition, but I prefer the G4 in the first picture (less punch but the overall colors are more accurate) and the iPhone in the third.
In the end, we are not yet at compact camera level - maybe next iteration (z6 or z7 or whatever they will call it). I'd really love to have an RX100 performance squeezed into a phone
Found a site with more samples pics from the Z5 vs note 5. http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/4523/4953454/1/rv/sony-xperia-z5-compact-review/ Its a close call but Z5 wins when its shoots a photo in the dark tho.

Am I the only one seeing that low light photos look good on Note 5. Specially the example you gave, Note 5 has more details compared to Z5. Yea we all know that Samsung dose produce more warmer pics which makes the photo looks yellowish, but if you take a closer look the noise reduction is so aggressive in Z5.
View attachment 3476394
P.S: Ah no wonder you seem to mix up the two photos. Note 5 indeed do look better here.
Sony for some reason still cannot make a good camera. Note 5 does look much better in almost every situation.
Also look at the sky in that one pictre. Z5 completely burnt while Note 5 shows some nice detail

These pictures looks awesome. and yea it got lotta details too. We need further tests to see how it's done. Since they can always get it right with software.
New camera module absolutely promising. Specially colour accuracy.

Think its time you get some glasses bro. The first one and clearly the best low light photo is made with the Z5 not the note. Even if you zoom in on the billboard etc you see that the note blurs and has to much overexposed. But both are good camera's tho/.

WOW those pictures look indeed pretty awesome!!! But they are taken by a pro tho with a tripod.
I am a Sony Fan But i Must admit the samsung note 5 is killing sony camera what a poor detail in z5 i hope there is improvement in the last release
Yea Note 5 has a great camera indeed, but I am pretty sure this is related to Software, and eprice device doesn't have the latest camera UI that means it's not running on the latest build, so untill then we can't really say which is better.
But overall Sony has good colour accuracy when it's day-time, I hope it'll be fixed with updates. I really want is more control over the camera such as Manual shutter speed and raw. Hope to see more improvement before the phone's released.

Specially when it comes to Camera software they don't seem to be doing great.
I am always surprised that despite making good cameras and selling camera parts to other phone manufacturers, Sony phones have the worse cameras in the mobile phone industry. The Z3 camera is terrible relative to Apples and Samsungs and their previous phones were even worse. Hopefully they finally fix it with the Z5.
Wow....

LG G6 users, is the camera a lot better than the Note 4?

Hi folks, heading out today to get an LG G6 to replace a Note 4. I've really enjoyed the note 4's camera, still takes excellent shots.
Is the LG G6 camera setup a whole lot better? A lot better? A bit better? l'm sure someone out there knows
Thanks for any comment... Cheers!:highfive:

I had the Note 4, which yes had a great camera, that being said, for me, the G6 is appreciably better IQ wise, especially in lower light, F1.8 really helps. See the attached photo at 1200 iso which I think is really impressive and way beyond what the Note 4 would have achieved IQ wise at 1200 iso. And another more normal photo with great detail. That's my 5 cents, hope it helps.

Very nice! I'm a sucker for flower and pet pictures- Love shooting 'em around the house :highfive:
These were from my old note 4, but will have the LG G6 tomorrow.
Caught me a bee at work in the first one. The closeup shot you got was really sharp and good looking.
I love it for the most part. The wide angle sucks if you're taking landscape shots. Stupidly panorama can't be done with the camera IMO the correct orientation. It has to be held up and down. Can't hold phone side ways. That's my only gripe honestly.
With a clip on macro lens
the wide angle is actually fine, one must remember its getting almost double the scene with the same 13 mp hence the photos looking softer (less detail), take your P&S camera and take a photo at 45/50mm and then zoom out to 24mm while standing at the same place and take another photo then look at each at 100% you'll see exactly the same thing, same amount of megapixels covering a lot more info...
Hi
I got a new LG G 6 4 days back.
The picture quality is pathetic. Its blurry and pixelated 99.99% pictures clicked in all conditions are going wrong, day light, artificial, auto manual, dual cam, single cam.
any idea what is wrong.
I have read many reviews and videos and am sure that pic quality is bound to be better but unable to figure out.
Currntly using PIXEL XL and iphone 6s.

I was a little surprised to find the RGB camera isn't 12mb like advertised too, it's 11.8

Comparison between P10+ & Mate10 at ISO1000. Mate10 noise reduction is too strong until lost of colors & some details has been smoothen. P10+ handle it much better & more natural. Hope Huawei will improve in this area.
I am also dissapointed by mate 10 photo quality. In daylight its worse than my old galaxy s4!
Noise reduction is too strong, sharpening is just way too strong and contrast is too strong. Pictures look completely artificial.
JPG are almost useless on 4K good screen.
On the other side - raw files are great.
My Mate 10 arrived yesterday, sampled out the camera this morning. I'm so impressed with the entire Phone so far, but the camera is really something.
The forum has reduced the quality of these quite a bit.
Is possible some of our camera are defective? I haven't been impressed at all with it. Especially in low light the pictures look a bit rubbish. The u11 and original pixel xl looked a lot better

I agree. I've been comparing the Note 8 and M10 Pro... and when i send them to people to tell me what they think, most of them come back to me by telling me the N8 is much better. I am using the Zero camera mod on the N8, and it seems that it really makes the pictures better. Honestly i was expecting much better.
Did you try the M10 on "moving subjects"? like babies, dogs, cars... for me it just has a hard time focusing. Of course, this on auto mode... on pro, and when you take still pictures it looks really nice. I also realised that the color isn't very warm, tends to go on the blue cold then warm.

I haven't really taken loads of pics outside mainly low light... But what I have taken is a bit washed out and haven't been impressed.
I think the hardware is as good as the other flagships and I heard you can get better pictures in pro mode. The software side obviously isn't doing a very good job and needs updating

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the OnePlus 6's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.

very bad....sorry to say it!
It is much better though than many 12mpxl cameras of the past without any low-light tricks. But it still sucks.
https://www.anandtech.com/show/13038/the-oneplus-6-review/8
V30 with MUCH smaller sensor and pixels obliterates OP6 with its pixel binning. Op5T had pixel binning, but it had it on a sensor without OIS. Hence nobody liked op5t low light blurry mess shots. I have no idea why OP6 devs cant just port pixel binning software to the main camera with OIS and see how it obliterates competetion.
I wish we had somebody who can make this happen. Just make a port of op5T second camera binning software to op6 main camera and have a best allround flagship killing camera. Is it that hard?
I would say its quite good. I compared this with my friend that owns Samsung S8. My photo came out a lot of sharper with so much light in contrast of his photo that came out a little blurry and with less light on photo.

Yeah, it's not forgiving when you use point and shoot mode!
I found turning off hdr makes better pictures. However, lots of reports says 5.1.7 has better low light performance. So one can only hope an update makes it better. Or we just have to hope that when the pixel 3 comes, we can use resources from Google cam for 845 snapdragon.
We hope.....

But if I zoom in on the p20 pro pictures I feel the same... In fact all cell cameras if you zoom just look horrible not made for zooming in tbh. Looks better if looked at a bigger screen.
I own other phone less expensive with Gcam, and zooming the detail is more present...
My daughter face is full of grain and lacks detail...
I've never owned a "premium" phone before and I must say that I'm actually quite impressed with the low-light photo quality - I was having a tour through a cavern, took a few photos and they've actually shown more detail than I could even see! Of course, when I looked at them on a big screen, the photos were noisy and oversharpened, but they were definitely an "instagramable" material and that's what counts for me.

I'm not trying to be offensive but are you sure that those pics are better than s20ultra?
I feel I can take those pics with my note 10+

I agree only that it can't outperform S20Ultra - only to match sometimes. It has been proven that for Mi Note 10/ Mi 10 Pro there is better processing than S20 Ultra looking at the details. Even 9 to 1 bining does not work that good with this gen. But the margin is so small and noticable only in pixel peeping. Xiaomi's native cam night mode is very bad from Mi Note 10 and Mi 10 - I see that with this model 10T Pro they improved a little. Hope this will be fixed with updates in future.
For Note10+ I would not compare these much - yes for resolution like 'instagram' it would match looking at small scale, but at even slightly zoomed in (especialy in PC) it really outperforms Note10+ at everywhere - this is for night mode (gcam used on xiaomi). At day time yes, Note 10 series processing is great, only it lacks looking inspection at details. But for most uses the rendering on samsung is way aheat comparing to native xiaomi app (not gcam).

I doubt it is better than S20 Ultra.
I am not so impressed by this camera, when I take pictures of the letters on a Fanta can the letters are not sharp but with my Mi Mix 2S it is sharp.
I haven't tried to take pictures outside in daylight yet.

I've received some pics from mi10t pro (stock app) and compared with my gcam note 10+...Even on zoom in difference is minor.
I'm asking this coz I'm thinking of selling note 10+ and getting this one...than put gcam on it...Problem is, I like note (looks, spen, screen, ONE UI)...but I do love camera upgrade.

If gcam works on your note 10+, so its SD 855 processor?
In that case I would wait for next gen, Note10+ overall offers better experience.
