RAW Photos in development? - Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Questions & Answers

Hey there!
It is my first time in any forum!
I created this account to help me find answers for my question:
Is there any update in the works regarding raw capture for the xperia xz2 premium?
I still hope raw support gets added, because I am a photographer and jpegs are the enemy of photo editing!
The camera on this phone is great but it could be so much better with the possibilities the raw format gives.
Thanks all!

I think this is a related question, so I'm writing it here.
Has anyone tried FreeDcam, OpenCamera, MotionCam, etc. on the XZ2 Premium?

Thanks for your info.
Can OpenCamera save DNG? That's great.
How about the monochrome camera RAW recording which is a feature of the XZ2 Premium?
Of course I should buy one and try it out, but if you have any info please let me know.

[Q] Raw Photos on Nexus 4

Hi,
searching the forums and google there was really nothing to be found about raw photos on the Nexus 4 or Android in general.
Maybe someone here knows if there is a App/hack that enables it, or has some technical knowledge about Android internals and if it is even possible.
Any information is very welcome, maybe there is even more quality to get from the camera with simple software?
Regards
user
PS: If you do not know about raw photos or why they are great, many details are here. Short Version: You can edit photos way better than Jpeg and they keep more quality.
Yes I'm intrigued by this as well. More than happy to put up with larger RAW sizes and post processing if it gives even a 20% boost to final image quality.
As far as I know, Google did not updated the nexus 4 camera api to the new lollipop version, so it will not be possible to get the most of it, like RAW shots or manual controls. It's a shame.
(My source is the thread in the L camera github page where they're talking about this.)
L Camera
It seems like not all nexus devices are supported..
Check out the L Camera App forum..

so will developers enable it?
The quality of photos in my N4 is **** ! every pic I take is blurry even when visualised on computer, I think the problem is hardware and taking RAW pics wont make it any far better !

If you want Camera RAW, ask for it

Sony wants to know if you want Camera RAW
Tell them you want it: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Software-Updates/Camera2-API/td-p/974742/highlight/false
IMO, it's not about RAW files, it's about API access to RAW so that developers have the option to do better image processing than Sony.
OR - Sony could just implement better processing on their own and we wouldn't have to worry about hunting for 3rd party apps to do what this phone should have done out of the box.

The thing is, they won't. But implementing the new api doesn't take as much work as writing better image processing.

I posted in that thread. Here's hoping they do it.
Thanks for the hint to that thread. I`m also one of those, who were very disappointed that Sony didn`t implemented the RAW capture feature. But there seems to be hope

Me too... sad for us, that even with this premium flagship the software is only getting near of the modded ones that we have, made by starters in programming, instead of sony engineers.
Hope this year for real camera and not another self proclaimed one again.
I don't care for Raw support as much. Just wanted decent manual controls, ideally like the G4 has. Hopefully it does, if so I'll be back to Sony, first one since the xperia Arc.

Z5 doesn't support:
Manual White Balance
RAW support

[APP][Camera Super Pixel][0.9.6beta] 32MP rear camera & 4.9MP front camera

Hi all!
After more than a year of hard work I am pleased to announce in this Nexus 5 forum the first beta release of “Camera Super Pixel”, a camera app that takes pictures enhancing the resolution of the camera, improving sharpness and reducing noise.
The app takes a burst of pictures and intelligently combines them into a higher resolution photograph (up to 4x) using an own-developed super-resolution (SR) algorithm. The camera is optimized for static scenes. In other situations the result may not be good.
We are working on improving the performance in terms of speed and quality of the result.
Please send us your feedback if you have any issue with the app.
Thanks for your support!

Hi RonnellTapawan,
the device must support the “burst mode” and raw photo format included in the new Camera2 API. Unfortunately just a few smartphones support this feature. We are working hard to add full support for new devices (Samsung S6 & S7, One Plus Two, LG G4, ...).
Amazing job. Is this possible to make it save photos in dng ? Other than that - once again amazing job
I've paid for it but the ads are not removed. Can you help me?

Thanks for the feedback! We could include dng and new camera features (ex. burst pics) on future versions. Thanks for the idea.

Awesome, can't wait for that. It's just step back behind "L camera" , with raw support it will be definitely best camera app
Nice work ..Keep it Up !
Front camera result is excellent ...atleast 3-4 times better than Google Camera. So this app becomes permanent Selfie app for me
But to be honest i don't see much improvements in rear camera, many times even Google camera with HDR+ performs better than it !

Hi,
the quality varies according to the number of photos the app can mix correctly. You can activate "Debug mode" setting inside the app to check it, we are working hard to improve speed & quality.
Maybe you can add flash and hdr

Thanks for tip..i don't doubt app's ability & future potential
As a reviewer i like to give all the details i can give instead of just saying awesome or worst so i shared my observation that improvement in back camera isn't that much drastic as Front. So that you can focus on it in next version

Amazed to see a very new app not implementing the newest permission system or compiled using the latest SDK, hope you guys implement the run time permission model in the next build.
Amazing results. Thanks
No work with Android KK?

Hi there, thanks for your efforts. I tried this app on my Z5 E6653. Didn't get the chance to test properly yet but I have a few suggestions for a future release: adding option to enable flash, option to set resolution, and make this app compatible with other devices.
I understand this is still beta but I find the concept very interesting and I'll keep my eye on this one!
Cheers!
Just tested on Xperia Z5 Compact. Works great - definite improvement in image quality. Good idea on the multi image sampling!
Agree with other comments about improved setting options. Although I imagine flash would be difficult to implement due to the camera taking a series of burst shots

Thanks for testing! Is the app listed as compatible on Google Play for your Sony Z5 device?
You are right about the flash on burst shots, but we will try to add a "torch" mode

Bracketing

What is the best way to make bracketing. With Huawei camera there is no function for bracketing. With camera fv-5 app it's not working probably and it is even not possible to set the shutter speed. Any suggestions?
Not sure why you need bracketing if u can see the image before shooting.
Or you can shoot in raw and edit the pictures later.

The camera has hdr option, and with raw you can manipulate the image as you want.
Use the shadows and highlight in Photoshop.
I know, but it's no where near as good as taking, say, 7 images at -3eV through +3eV and combining them in an HDR program or app.

Yup. He'll need a tripod though...
Thanks for answering
I need it for photos spheres in HDR as I wrote in an other thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/p10-plus/how-to/photo-sphere-focus-t3611563
I use tripod and nodal adapter and shoot single images and stitch it in ptgui.
I would love to do it all on Huawei p10 plus but somehow the results are blurry when I use streetview app camera.
https://goo.gl/photos/Xmdi4FpsTwi22wbt7
So bracketing is not possible on Huawei p10 plus. So I tried to stitch fotos in raw but they don't have exif data. Ptgui needs this information. Huawei makes it not easy to make photo-spheres.
