can we install GSI images on this phone? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Given that it's supposedly treble and A/B compatible, aren't those the requirements to support generic system images? Has anyone tried to install the latest Android Q GSI images?

It's a different process to install, requiring specific boot and vendor. Lots of broken stuff. IMO not worth it.

Anyone managed to get a Treble rom booting on the OP5 yet?

I've tried both an unofficial AICP Treble build and the official RR Treble build on the OnePlus 5 after installing OB13 (Which the Treble app said had the vendor partition working), neither will boot. Both show a black screen with frozen cyan notification light. Flashed both using the latest blu_spark TWRP (twrp-3.2.2-x_blu_spark_v8.81_treble-op5_op5t.img).
Tried both while mounting the vendor partition in TWRP and with it unmounted, neither works.
After I had OB13 installed, I performed fastboot -w and then wiped all but vendor using the above TWRP. Still wouldn't work.
Anyone know why?
Just got it to boot after talking to phhusson. Turns out the problem is that ro.build.fingerprint was too long (it takes a maximum of 91 characters.) When I changed it to a shorter, also valid build fingerprint (eg. the one from phhusson's AOSP GSI) then it boots correctly.
Found this in gsi thread maybe that fix your booting problem :good:

Surely that's something that needs to be fixed in the rom then? Or is that problem specific to our phone?

Don't know that never used treble rom found this in this thread

Isn't the ro.build.fongerprint just in the build properties? So you can easily change it, I can't try ATM cause I need a stable phone for 2 weeks. Maybe try flashing phhs GSI of AOSP instead?

Hey guys I'm looking into flashing all this, but can you guys tell me what doesn't work? What are the differences with custom roms?
From what I understand, it's similar to a custom ROM in terms of camera (not fully working), in terms of volte (doesn't work).
I'm willing to test but since it takes a lot of time on my side (need to fully backup etc...), I hope it works fine
Also, the gsi is the lastest version now that official P is out?

You should ask rom related things in the rom thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/pr...-android-p-developer-preview-t3816659/page116
I am on open beta 15. I saw this video of formatting data, then installing mokee rom, mounting vendor and installing gsi image of dp5 of android p.
Things seemed pretty easy.
I did the exact steps. I am stuck at a point where i can't find vendor option in mount of twrp.
Could someone guide me on what can de done?

Can you get some link detailing the Changelog about PR1, I am trying to find the changes in PR1 over DP5.
I treid DP5 on Oneplus 5 and it was still Highly unstable, Video Call feature missing without DUO, Front camera not workng in Ported Google Camera, and many other problems like only LTE no VoLTE support yet. So I am looking for changelog of PR1. ( or you could just mention few changes)

With wipe device you mean formatting data right? After completing mokee set up when you reboot to recovery swipe to factory reset and then flash A image and so on

Does anyone know what purpose the Mokee ROM portion of the setup serves on a technical level? Also has anyone noticed that the front camera works on snapchat but not in the google cam port? interesting stuff.

anyone tried GSI's on the 6T?

Anyone tried a GSI for the 6T? If so how is it? Just curious

Not but I'm curious too, I'd like to try Havoc OS that was very good on my previous device (Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S) and I think we can flash it on our device, just I want to know if OP6T have A/B partition like my friend said to me.

Yes the 6T supports seemless updates so it does have A/B but curious what will works or not. Too lazy to backup and flash atm lol
Sorry, I thought you were talking about Android Q GSI. I myself got excited after cursorily glancing through an article on XDA. However, after going through it carefully, I realized Google might release GSI for Android Q before beta program.
I've just flashed a few GSI's on my 6T using the OP6 tutorial and they work fine apart from the fingerprint sensor and the status bar is a little off.
Also the system storage is 16GB on the few GSI I tried

You are wrong, I think,
I checked redmi note 7 pro with treble check apply from Playstore, it shows it does not have a/b partition.
I appreciate you taking time to answer a fellow members query, but request you to confirm and provide info or be clear as to how sure you are of the answer.

Don't rely on treble check app. It shows A only. But it is A/B with (A) system as root. Every phone launching with Android pie and above should use system as root (A) with A/B partition. A/B gsi's will only work in Redmi note 7 and none of A gsi will work. You can refer to google gsi page, there it is written correctly. And the app is not changed for new gsi scheme , i think.
Check yourself, you can't boot Gsi A, only gsi A/B.
"Is ur lavender A only ? or A/B ?
its A only.. well yes but actually no
it comes with A only 'system as root'
so its a hybrid between A and A/B
for gsi.. A/B gsi works fine"

Which phone is lavender?
I use redmi note 7 pro India variant.
I'm sorry can you point me to the links of website which talks about this 'system as root with a/b' partition and what's this new gsi scheme and I wanted to know so can we really hold two separate roms, boot into the newly flashed rom, if doesn't boot or we like it just go back to the old rom without any data loss etc - that's what a/b seamless was intended for right

It has A/B partition. Where A is taken as root. So treble check shows only one system and result in A only. I didn't understand the proper working. Since there are two partitions A/B, that's why those gsi works. I don't know whether there is seamless update, and someone said, it can load new update to other partition and use that as system as root, if something fails switches to old one itself. Not sure about that. Here is the link for gsi android types.

I just tried some commonly seen treble check terminal Emulator based codes, attaching a screenshot here.
Please tell me if you can understand something from it.
I don't know about that. Sorry. ? I just know that A/B works with this phone, with A as system root. Tried many gsi's. Still confused about seamless update, searched many places and didn't find any regarding new scheme supporting seamless update or not.

Only A/B roms work with this device. No A roms works. Join the telegram group, there are many devolopers and people trying different gsi's and me personally tested 4-5 gsi roms. Every A/B booted without issues. And about switching, no twrp supports switching now. Twrp is not yet offciail and unofficial ones have some minor problems.

Custom ROM for the Pixel 4

I see a couple of custom ROMS for the Pixel 4 XL. However I can't seem to find any for the Pixel 4. Unlike the kernel, a Pixel 4Xl ROM cannot be used for a Pixel 4. Anyone knows of any custom ROMS out there for the Pixel 4?

Use GSI Roms. They aren't device-specific because they are using Project Treble.
Every phone with out of the oreo or higher have support for this.

Well i always do these steps when i'm update/install the mentioned gsi on my pixel 4 xl:
1. fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
2. fastboot erase system
3. fastboot flash system name-of-the-system-img
4. fastboot -w
5. fastboot reboot
I use the vbmeta file from this site:
Link: https://dl.google.com/developers/android/qt/images/gsi/vbmeta.img
Edit: I forgot something. The newer pixels (including pixel 4 serie) have a new fastboot mode (fastbootd). You need to go in this mode to execute step 1 - 4.
And i make step 5 in fastbootd mode, too.
Dirty Unicorns works great on the Pixel 4. I've been running it for a few days now. You'd have to build it yourself because it's not yet an officially supported device, but the device and vendor trees/repositories needed to build it for the Pixel 4 are on my public GitHub!

This is generally not encouraged by the teams creating and maintaining the ROMs because people start asking for support for devices not officially supported, so I'll have to ask for permission first. I'd probably be able to share it via the DU Telegram group. And I'd definitely not be able to guarantee any support whatsoever, so it'd be a "figure out on you own" situation.
