What is the difference between just rooting using Nook Manager and flashing a ROM like 1337?
I am assuming, I can still install APKs after rooting?

Rooting with NookManager gives you access to "root" directories that are normally off limits to users. It also allows for various customizations. It sets the security flag for installing from "unknown sources", allowing you to install apps via a file manager (or ADB), as opposed to getting them from the PlayStore (which you can't anymore). And it installs a base set of apps to get you going, like a file manager, launcher, browser, etc. That is customizable.
Custom ROMs like the 1337 simply enable different features that some people like. Perhaps better to use the system "as-is" for a bit before you decide to wipe it out? Then you'll have a better idea of what you'd like to have.

Thank you @nmyshkin, I think my liking will be towards Nook Manager. So I will try to get ready with the Nook Manager installation files and instruction. The only thing confusing here in the forum is there are too many threads and geeting lost which and where to start. Hope if I start with the original thread which is from way back 2012, it will still work. My understanding is if I am on a new firmware 2.1.2 I will rewrite the modification files to nook manager as per that thread.

Here's how you get started:
1. When you get your NST, execute a factory reset. This will return the device to an out-of-the-box condition. To do this, power up and as soon as you see the "Read Forever, your Nook is starting up" screen, hold the two lower hardware buttons until you see a screen prompt.
2. Register your device with B&N.
3. Update the firmware to 1.2.2 (https://su.barnesandnoble.com/nook/nook2/1.2.2/351e26527e80156183e74be2da2ce89f/nook_1_2_update.zip)
4. Prepare a NookManager card according to the instructions here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/development/nst-g-updating-nookmanager-t3873048, making whatever changes/additions you want in terms of base software such as a file manager, browser, launcher, etc.
5. Run NookManager. Before you do anything else I suggest you make a backup of the newly updated and registered NST. That way if something goes wrong, you won't have to go all the way back to a factory reset. After the backup, root the NST and exit NookManager.
After that, it's pretty much up to you. Any time you want to make another backup, just reboot with the NookManager card inserted and make a backup. Just remember that the backup will replace whatever is on the NookManager card, so if you wanted to keep that one, you need to have copied it to your PC first.

The device software is designed to sell ebooks from B&N. Anything that frustrates this design (like not registering or disabling parts of the B&N system) tends to raise all kinds of internal alarms and the system dialogs constantly with itself, worrying about its purpose in life, its inability to "phone home", and generally fritters away a lot of its battery charge on rehearsing for a role it cannot assume.
In short, the path of least resistance results in the least system hand-wringing, improved battery life, etc. You don't need to enter any credit card information. All you need is an email address (which I suppose could be fake) and a password. Then you can forget about it if you have no interest in purchasing ebooks from B&N. I have completely ignored the B&N system except for the Reader and Library which I find adequate--and simple--enough for my needs. But everything else is hidden. It just lives its happy little digital life waiting for that one special day when I will buy an ebook with a patience only electrons can exhibit. Meanwhile I have all kinds of other stuff that I am interested in and there don't seem to be any issues or conflicts with the B&N system.

I successfully backed up and rooted the device. Firmware is 1.2.2.
But I don't have any apps. Not even the base software. See screenshot. Even the extras like es file explorer were not installed. Since I don't have any file explorer, I am unable to install any apps. I want to go for ADB method as last resort. Please advice.

You can try for ADB (more headaches there), but it would be better now to get some useful apps and have a way to conveniently side-load others. You are supposed to be able to install apps from Relaunch in the file manager screen. That would involve copying the apk file to the NST via a USB connection, then locating that apk file using the file folder browser and tapping on the icon. I could never get that to work, but it is supposed to work.
Failing that, you need to revisit NookManager. You must not have done the customization correctly if none of the apps you wanted were installed. If you can get that fixed, you can simply root again with NookManager (right on top of what you have now) and it will fix the problem IF you get it set up correctly.
There are four steps required to add an app to the NookManager rooting routine:
1. Copy the apk file to the folder files/data/app on the NookManager SD card
2. in the folder "scripts" on the NookManager SD card, copy and rename one of the "install_x" files so it represents the app you just moved into the folder in step 1. So, if you want ES File Explorer, you might rename the file "install_esfileexplorer"
3. Edit the file you just copied and renamed, changing the name of the apk file in the first line to exactly match the filename of the apk file you have replaced in files/data/app. So continuing the example, "es_file_explorer.apk" (which is the name of the apk file as I provided it). Then edit the "echo" statement so it reads something like "echo ES File Explorer installed"
4. Locate the file scripts/do_root. Copy and rename one of the "install_x" files so it matches what you did earlier, in this case "install_es_file_explorer". There are no contents to edit.
You need to do those four steps for each app you want to add to the install list. To remove an app you don't want (like the Amazon App Store), remove the apk file from files/data/app, remove the "install_x" file for that app from the folder "scripts", and remove the "install_x" file for that app from the file scripts/do_root.

Thanks, I followed all those steps...I will take a relook at it. But without es file explorer, I thought there is already a file manager. How to I get there as I can't see anything in the app drawer? (Screenshot in previous post).

I know very little about Relaunch, but I believe you need to tap on the open door in the upper right corner to get out of the app drawer.
Oh okay! I was expecting to launch file manager from app drawer. So when relaunch opens we are already in file explorer.
One more question: how do we make dictionary work in the default nook reader, that is when you you open a book from library. I thought pressing on a particular word will present me the option. I only see option to bookmark. I have to read the manual again.

That's how the dictionary works for me. Hold your finger on a word until it is highlighted. Then a series of options pops up from the bottom, one of which is "Look up".

I followed all your instructions above and successfully installed all apps. To summarise my observation after the successful installation:
1. Only Opera browser app and ES File Explorer app works
2. Yalp app store does not work at all - it just takes me to the next screen with options to 'update' or 'run'. Pressing update keeps searching forever and 'run' takes me back to the previous screen. After several tests, I decided to uninstall the app.
I tried to install youversion bible app which also works (but its a old version) so several features not available. But at least it works.
I noticed wifi outage issues intermittently on the opera browser and also once while trying the yalp store app. It said I was not connected, but I know for a fact I was connected when I connect to the Nook store etc.,
Overall, I am wondering what did I gain out of the whole process. Not much I can do with the custom installation. So I might return back to a original nook after playing with this setup for a while. This leaves me with couple of questions that I will start on a new thread.

To go back to original nook state - do I need to simply go into settings>Device Info> Erase & Deregister Device to get it back to out of box condition? Will this cancel the rooting?
Or do I have to stick the nook manager card and restore from backup?

Erase and deregister will remove root and restore to out-of-the-box state unless you have done something serious. In that case, a factory re-image should solve the problem. That is done by powering off, then powering on and holding down the two lower hardware buttons as soon as the "Read Forever" screen appears. Wait for the prompt and follow it.
Re: Yalp Store, I just checked mine a minute ago and it's running fine. Very rarely it goes down and can't log in to the PlayStore, but it generally comes back later in the day.
Okay - so maybe I should try yalpstore at different times.

I tried this program yesterday and can confirm that it works
so its a cleaner way to install apk files into the captivate instead of editing the dbsettings file?? do I just save the apk file to my computer then just plug the captivate into the computer then select the file and run the program?
This lets you sideload any app (.apk file - android app file extension) that you can download on your computer, and it does not require rooting.
You need to download the samsung drivers for the phone (sammy website), upgrade to .net 4 (google search), download the wonder machine program from the beginning of the thread, and turn on usb debugging on the phone (settings>applications>development>usb debugging on)
Download an .apk somewhere on the net (I chose bansai blast as my first one). MOVE THAT FILE INTO THE FOLDER WITH THE UNZIPPED WONDER MACHINE. If you don't then you will get a "loader.bat" not recognized error when you hit go. Next, plug in your phone, pull down the notification tap and mount your sd card to the computer (I know that the instructions on android central say to keep your phone in charge only mode, but then the program will not find your phone if you don't mount the card). On the wonder machine hit choose file, and select the apk file you downloaded (again, in same folder as wonder machine program). Hit ok. Then hit go. It should pull up a dos looking command window and display your serial number (If you have a firewall like zonealarm, be sure to let the program access the net and your trusted zone - serial won't display if you don't) and a "press any key to continue." Do that and it should take a second to say "install successful. press any key..." Check your phone and the app should be in your apps list. Hope this helps, as it took me a while to figure all this out.

with droid explorer am I able to copy the dbsettings file directly to my micrsd card then open SQLite from my phone edit and paste back into the origin dbsettings and overwrite it? or does that have to be done thru the comp??

That is correct, plug in your phone, place the apk anywhere on your comp, and browse for the apk thru the app. this then installs the apk directly into your phone.

With this app you do not have to edit the db, the only down side of this app is that you have to install the apks via your comp.

You are right, with this app you lose a bit of flex ability since this method installs via your comp. But for those people who dont want to edit or use the adb push method it could not get any easier. I personally end up installing apks when i am on the road all the time so i prefer the permanent methods on my phones.

by following all that you posted I was able to root with super user , save with rom mgr , load wireless tether which was my goal.
Just to update were i screwed up must remember with super user (update zip) put the whole zip file on phone as a stand alone not in any folder . With side loader must be in the same folder as side loader to work , of course with micro net 4 installed, on the pc and debugging enabled , samsung usb driver installed on pc and superuser must installed to use side loader

Hello,
I decided to write this because I had a hell of a time finding out how to do this - all the information is here on the forums but not all in one place so you can just read and install the custom ROM.
The ROM that is available that I have successfully tested is CM7_RC1_X8_004
You will need the following programs:
SuperOneClick - to root your phone
Busybox - from the android Market
Xrecovery
Super Manager - from the Market
X10 Flashtool
and your ROM
Rooting

So First we want to root the phone, we will need to set the USB debugging mode to on. Go into settings - applications - Development and click on the tick next to USB debugging to turn it on. Plug the Phone into the PC via the USB Cable.
At the end of this post are files download SuperOneclick and extract it into a folder on your desktop then run the exe file called SuperOneClick.exe and click on root, it will scroll through a load of things then come up with a message that says "Root files have been installed would you like to run a test?" To which I always say Yes then it says "A su command will now be sent to your phone please hit allow in superuser" (there were no messages on my phone so I just hit OK on that message) Then a message comes up asking you to donate, so if that utility is handy for you feel free to donate to the makers of SuperOneclick!
You can now turn off USB debugging.
Installing BusyBox

Go to settings - sound and display and set the screen timeout to 30 mins I have found it to keep locking while installing Busybox as it takes a while to do.
Go to the market and search for Busybox and install and accept permissions on it. once this part of the application has installed you need to run it as it has only been copied to the phone - now you have to actually install it.
So run the busybox app and say OK to the message from the developer (reading it first of course) then it will ask you for permission which you say yes.
Next we see a screen saying Status: Working, Your phone is Rooted, amount of free space in system is 10128kb, Busybox not found. (we haven't installed it yet.)
The first time I did this it took ages to get anywhere and ages to install so just be patient and wait for it. Choose Busybox 1.17.1 but change the location of the install to system/xbin (the drop down box at the bottom of the page.) Then Click Install. For me this time it failed so lets try v 1.18 and the default location. back up and then relaunch busybox installer.
I found I had to change the settings a couple times when I installed before to get it to install, you might not find that. Sure enough this time it installed fine using v1.18 and the default save location.
installing Super Manager and Xrecovery

First you need to download the new ROM files from here:

Go to the third post and download the rom: (currently

Once it's down extract the files to another folder in your desktop and you should have the files LiveWallpapers.zip, Update.zip, changelog.txt and a BASEBAND folder.
Then connect your phone and copy the three files and the folder to a new directory on your SDcard. (I called mine ROM) Now remove the cable from the PC not forgetting to unmount it first.
Then you need to download Super Manager from the market and install it then run it - choose File explorer - click on the favourite icon at the bottom(the picture of a folder and a heart) and choose SD card, navigate to your folder where you stored the files and click on all the ticks next to the files and folder and then when they are all selected click on any file and hold it till a menu appears and choose copy (This is to copy the files)
Then Click on the favourites one again and choose root path. Then go to System and then Bin and then click on one file and hold the button till the menu appears and scroll to the bottom where you see paste and click on it and this will paste the files into this folder.
X10 Flash tool

Next we need to use the X10 Flastool so download it from

(The thread I got this from is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746).
Once downloaded you need to extract the files and run X10FlashTool.exe.
Then before you plug the phone back in you need to put it into USB debugging mode again. Go into settings - applications - Development and click on the tick next to USB debugging to turn it on. Plug the phone back into the PC.
In the X10Flashtool click on the button that says ask root perms and press allow on the phone when it comes up and in the FlashTool it will say "INFO - Root Access Allowed."
Then Click Optimize and it will then reboot your phone, let the phone come back up and then in x10 Flasher click ask root perms and it should say Allowed again after a short time.
Then click on xRecovery. Power the phone off and wait for 20 seconds and then power it back on. As soon as you see the words "Sony Ericsson" appear on the screen start hammering the back button. Then the phone will boot into xRecovery.
Backup your phone
Use the sound volume up and down buttons to move up and down the menus and the home button to select the option (I think the back button is back as well). Choose the backup/restore option, then backup to backup your phone to the SD card (First the system and then the data)
Then when it's finished it will say complete and you can go ahead and put the new rom on the phone. Choose install Custom Zip, then choose custom zip from SDcard. Navigate to the directory you put your ROM in and choose update.zip it will ask you if you are sure so choose yes and it will update your phone.
Once it says Install from SDcard complete hit backup then choose the top option reboot phone.
Your Phone will then reboot into Android 2.3

Restoring your Phone to It's previous working state
To restore you phone back to how it was before you started all this all you need to do is Boot xRecovery by hammering the back button once you see the very first Sony Ericsson which takes you into xRecovery.
Then use the volume up and down on the side of the phone and choose backup and restore and you can choose advanced restore to restore a different component or just do a restore to do the whole phone back as it was.
I have just restored back successfully!

I don't really think so, but there is always the possibility when flashing your phone that you might Brick it.
I didn't break mine and I will do this to test every new firmware that comes out and because I've done it once most of the hard work is done which was installing xRecovery.
In short I offer you no guarantee this won't brick your phone what you do is at your own risk, but I had no trouble.

super manager isn't copying and pasting files. i follow the guide and when i click paste, nothing happens.
edit: it just says "prepare to copy" when i try to copy the files, then nothing when i paste

In supermanager open the folder system and then select the folder Bin, you have to change the folder from read to read and write first before u can copy anything.
thanks, realized i hadn't given super manager super user permission. what do i do differently when installing Rachts Roms because they don't come with an update.zip?

When u have Xrecovery and make an backup it will create a folder in SD card "backup" after u download the Rom from racth u put the folder on the backup folder, then in XRecovery u go to backup then restore, u will see the rom there, just press ok and it will do the rest like the zip file.

and on the same vein as the others i am having some problems pasting the contents of the ROM. i have given Super manager root prves. but it says not enough free desc space which seems right to me cus there is only 128Mb storage on the phone.

Based on my experience.. I didn't really know what I've done that make my phone cannot boot... it's all because not really prepared... Need to do some research and reading 1st..
Luckily, when done some reading, I manage to boot the phone after flashing with SEUS..
And after that... I prepare to do checklist... Now.. Everything seems OK...

With your phone did you get a 2GB SD card? I did with mine and that's where you need to copy the ROM files to(you need to copy the files in windows to the SD card). The only thing I was copying with super manager was the xRecovery files. (and I'm not sure I needed to do that since you kinda install xrecovery on the flash tool, I just posted exactly what I did)
mss_2212, yeah using the SE repair might get you out of a few scrapes, it's good that they offer such a utility to completely flash your phone back to the latest SE update!
Well, V6.0a is now out I am downloading that as we speak.

i realize my error you were talking about copying the files for Xrecovery i thought you were referring to the ROM files.

I'm still setting it up to how I like it but so far so good - it's nie and stable for me and WI-FI works which is a dream.
Don't forget to make a backup first of your old ROM though!

I tried to install the last 2.3.3 CM7 with this guide, but I get a problem with the X10 flashtool... In fact, I don't understand if I have to lauch the .exe in my phone, or in the PC. Because with the phone I can "ask root perms" but I get an error (it says me to use usb debug the phone and install...) but I think that I've followed the guide And since the PC, there is no file in the "firmware" fold...
So I install the custom ROM, without that step, and it success, even if I get another problem, but I think, because of the instability of the rom (no market, and no possibility to dl by internet)

Not quite sure what you're getting at, I will try to help if I can (I'm still a bit of a noob really myself)
You need to run the x10 flash tool on the PC with your phone connected in usb debugging mode before it will work.
"Then before you plug the phone back in you need to put it into USB debugging mode again. Go into settings - applications - Development and click on the tick next to USB debugging to turn it on. Plug the phone back into the PC."
The Market and other applications are included in the latest version(.6a as of this writing) in a zip file called gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip to install them you need to boot into xRecovery and choose install custom zip and then point it to that file which is next to the install.zip. Then the market will work.
v.6a is really nice but ultimately I had to revert because I needed to take some pics but a lot of stuff is working well!
I have a newly rooted Nook Simple Touch (NST) that was updated to firmware 1.2.1 before NookManager worked its magic.
The problem is that now I cannot take advantage of the Kindle App, ES File Explorer, or NGAppsAttack because I have no way to install anything.
Here is what I am running into.
1. I cannot install from the browser that came installed when NookManager did it's thing because it appears to have a problem with the certificate for any site except the default Barnes & Noble page, rendering my browser useless.
2. I cannot use a file explorer, such as ES File Explorer, to install a new version of the certificates or a new browser because one didn't come with NookManager's install and I have only ADB Konnect, Contacts, Device Registrator, Gallery, Library, Music, Nook Friends, Nook Touch Mod Manager, Nook HW Test, Settings, Shop, Social (doesn't work), SuperUser, and TestCenterService. I uninstalled Amazon AppStore because it didn't work and I read elsewhere that it was no longer working.
3. I cannot use the market app because there are no versions already installed, begging the question - now how do I install stuff without a browser, market, or file explorer?
I tried using NookManager to install things by following the directions elsewhere and extracting apps from their zip folders directly to the root directory of the NookManager MicroSD card. That failed on every app I tried because when I booted the NST off the NookManager card, there was no option for Custom under More! I even tried modifying the menu text file using Notepad++ to add the Custom -> menu item under button 4, but when the Custom menu came up there was no button response. Evidently, it couldn't find the APK files extracted to the root (in this case E:\) when I tried the extraction method.
Does anyone have a better idea? I mean, I'm not a programmer - so although there is probably a way to do it through ADB Konnect, I would need someone to explain it in baby steps.
Maybe I could image the SD card with an image that just installs apps?

You should be able to copy an apk file to the SD card and use the folder browser of Relaunch (which was installed during root) to install the package. Just open the folder where you copied the apk from your PC to the SD card and touch on the apk file.
If you need some apk files like ES, a browser, etc., check out my post here which includes a link to a zip file of potentially useful apps.
The certificates issue has recently been addressed. Look here and read a little further in the thread for some simplifications. But the resident browser is worthless and can be uninstalled.

I assume you are referring to an old NST or NSTG, not the new Glowlight Plus.
You've come late to the party for the PlayStore. Google has rolled up the welcome mat for devices running Eclair (Android 2.1) as of June 30, 2017.
You can side-load apps using Relaunch by transferring the apk files from your PC via USB to you Nook (place in a convenient folder, preferably on the SD card). Using the file manager capabilities of Relaunch, navigate to the folder where you copied the apk files. Touching on the apk file icon should bring up the option to install.
You can find various apks by searching with Google or trolling the forum here (a bunch that work in the link in my signature).

Hi, do you by any chance no the search to show all the files found on the main memory my PC doesn't seem to show the SD card when I plug in my Nook, so I cant upload the apk to the SD card it seems. I tried /root/

If your USB drivers are installed correctly you should see two "drives" when the NST is attached. One is the user accessible internal partition. You can copy over apk files into the "My Files" directory there if need be, as long as you can navigate to that folder using Relaunch, and install from there as described above--at least I think you can. The second "drive" should be the SD card which will show a similar directory structure unless you have added folders yourself.
There is no way to access all files on the internal memory via USB. Only the user data partition can be seen. To get to anything else you need a root browser (I think Relaunch has settings which enable root browsing).
If you're not seeing the SD card you either have an issue with the USB connection or there is an issue with the card itself. Can you see the card with Relaunch?

Yes I can see the card using Relaunch. And I was able to copy the apk into the My files directory, however, I was trying to figure out what the exact path is to specify in the Relaunch file browser/explorer so that i can see and install the apk? Do you know what it may be?

Ok thank you. I managed to find the package, however I'm presented with the error "There is a problem parsing the package" when trying to install. I tried installing some of the apps from your signature also but still the same issue persists.

Parsing errors generally mean the Android version is incorrect. That would not be the case for apps from my zip package.
How did you root your Nook?
Edit: try moving the apk files to the SD card and retry the install

When the original search was on to repair the aging cacerts.bks file in order to get the Kindle app working again, one of the things I came across was a remark from a fellow who had located a Honeycomb ROM (Android 3.2...last stop before the format of the security certificate storage was changed) and copied the cacerts.bks file from it to his Android 2.2 device which was having problems with websites, etc.
I still can't get the method described by @tshoulihane in this thread to work for me. But his edited cacerts.bks file works really well in solving the problem.
Yesterday I managed to locate a CM 7 ROM (Honeycomb). It contains a largish cacerts.bks file (compared to ours) with 127 certificates, 17 of which have expired. These seem to be mostly for central/eastern European and Asian entities, so perhaps not that critical. Well, it's only 10 years old
It has worked for me with the Kindle app and perhaps will help with some of the websites that complain about a secure connection even though I have enabled TLS 1.2 in Opera Mobile. More testing is needed there.
For anyone who wants to try it out, it is attached below. To use, rename your current cacerts.bks file (that's in /system/etc/security) to cacerts.bks.bak or similar. Then move the new file (unzip) into the same place. Check permissions. They should be rw-r-r. Reboot.
This looks great... though when I tried to rename and copy the new cacerts file, I am getting blocked due to the lack of root permissions.
I'm running the 1.2.1 tweaked/modded rom so I thought it wouldn't be an issue. I also tracked down the supersu3.1.3 apk and sideloaded it, but it didn't help either. Wondering if you had any ideas?

So was your SU app missing? Or did your file manager just not have root access?
Hard to know where to start. From my experience, the best-behaving SU for the NST/G is the one that comes with NookManager (attached below). It's old and the binaries are probably out of date, but you don't need anything better for the device.
You can try removing the one you have now, reboot, and install the one below. Then check that your file manager has root acccess. In ES File Explorer, for example, you have to go into settings and tick the selection for root access. It's not automatic. And even with that, you have to tick an additional box to mount /system as rw while you're working in it.
At one time the superuser app was included -- but is no longer linked, and I had overlooked it after initially flashing the rom.
Unfortunately, the su app you provided also doesn't work. When I try to delete the old cacerts.blk it looks like it's doing something, but then the file still remains. If I instead try to rename the file, I get "operation failed".
I tried to delete or rename using an app called "root browser", and also the file manager in "super manager" suite. When I try to enable the root explorer function in ES file manager , I get "sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your device."
When I go under Device info, the ROM name does indeed say "Tweaked Modded ROM". I assume this should mean it's rooted but I'll have to dig deeper.

Mmm.... so the ROM came "rooted"? I've attached a root check app which I've tried on my NST. This should answer the question of root.
If root has been lost somehow, it might be possible to salvage what you have by running NookManager. If you don't want the various additions like Relaunch, you can remove those apps from the data/app folder once you've written the card and then make the other needed changes as described here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/development/nst-g-updating-nookmanager-t3873048
Or, you could just use NM as-is and uninstall unwanted material afterwards. The important thing is root and a functioning SU.
Okay... turns out my device was NOT rooted after all; I had assumed the binaries were already installed. Fortunately, I was able to find a superSU 0.93 binary and root through CWM. I replaced cacerts.blk with yours, and now the kindle app works! At first I had difficulty logging in, but turns out Amazon was emailing me a one time password after every attempt. After entering the OTP I am now up and running.
My next issue is getting Pocket working -- I installed Read it Later 1.0.1 but it's not syncing.
