so does this mean you can load any .apk file from the web into this Sideloader program and when the Captivate is plugged into the computer it will install it without issues?? and no need for modifying the no-market value settings thru root explorer?

so its a cleaner way to install apk files into the captivate instead of editing the dbsettings file?? do I just save the apk file to my computer then just plug the captivate into the computer then select the file and run the program?
This lets you sideload any app (.apk file - android app file extension) that you can download on your computer, and it does not require rooting.
You need to download the samsung drivers for the phone (sammy website), upgrade to .net 4 (google search), download the wonder machine program from the beginning of the thread, and turn on usb debugging on the phone (settings>applications>development>usb debugging on)
Download an .apk somewhere on the net (I chose bansai blast as my first one). MOVE THAT FILE INTO THE FOLDER WITH THE UNZIPPED WONDER MACHINE. If you don't then you will get a "loader.bat" not recognized error when you hit go. Next, plug in your phone, pull down the notification tap and mount your sd card to the computer (I know that the instructions on android central say to keep your phone in charge only mode, but then the program will not find your phone if you don't mount the card). On the wonder machine hit choose file, and select the apk file you downloaded (again, in same folder as wonder machine program). Hit ok. Then hit go. It should pull up a dos looking command window and display your serial number (If you have a firewall like zonealarm, be sure to let the program access the net and your trusted zone - serial won't display if you don't) and a "press any key to continue." Do that and it should take a second to say "install successful. press any key..." Check your phone and the app should be in your apps list. Hope this helps, as it took me a while to figure all this out.

with droid explorer am I able to copy the dbsettings file directly to my micrsd card then open SQLite from my phone edit and paste back into the origin dbsettings and overwrite it? or does that have to be done thru the comp??

That is correct, plug in your phone, place the apk anywhere on your comp, and browse for the apk thru the app. this then installs the apk directly into your phone.

With this app you do not have to edit the db, the only down side of this app is that you have to install the apks via your comp.

You are right, with this app you lose a bit of flex ability since this method installs via your comp. But for those people who dont want to edit or use the adb push method it could not get any easier. I personally end up installing apks when i am on the road all the time so i prefer the permanent methods on my phones.

just make sure to put the .apk's in the same folder as the sideload program

i hate logging into windows. I'd love a mac version!
but I do have this on my windows ( i believe it is an androidcentral.com app ) and i used it a lot until i started messing with my phone and learned about adb.
I just wanted to say thanks for the quick guide. I was concerned about messing around with the db settings and screwing stuff up. I have absolutely NO problem installing non-market apps through my pc--thanks a lot dude!

by following all that you posted I was able to root with super user , save with rom mgr , load wireless tether which was my goal.
Just to update were i screwed up must remember with super user (update zip) put the whole zip file on phone as a stand alone not in any folder . With side loader must be in the same folder as side loader to work , of course with micro net 4 installed, on the pc and debugging enabled , samsung usb driver installed on pc and superuser must installed to use side loader

For example i put X .apk in a folder from SDCard thru Usb cable
With file manager i enter in the folder and install it, i delete the X.apk
Thru cable i put Y.apk in the same folder, and after unplugging the cable, when i enter with the Astro or OI FileManager, i see the the X.apk... and not Y.apk
When exploring it again with usb cable, there is y.apk like is need to be, but when i enter there with astro or Oi, there is the old X.apk and not the Y.apk...
Isn't he refreshing the filelist from the sdcard ? What should i do ?

You can try to unmount SD card and mount it again in phone options, or try to use android commander to copy/push files from your computer to phone. I hope that this will help you
With pulling out the SDcard does not helps, ive tried.
But how to explore then the PC with the android ?
Mounting and unmounting SD cards is the thing that helped me with this situations maybe try other Android build. Here you have weeb site of the program I've mention before androidcommander.com/ You need to install Android SDK to make it work properly. Try to google some toutorial how to instal the Android SDK

In Computer, first we have to have exe file to install anything and then we click on it to install the app on windows computer generally. when the app is installed on computer, we have installed app files in program files and then a dump (that is exe file) which we keep to install this app on any other computer.
Now, please let me know if this is applicable in android phones also?
I know that in android, there is .apk file instead of .exe file in computer. I observed that after installation apk file disappears. Is this true?
Not sure if in understood well, did you mean if instal anything from SD card? If you are asking that the answer is yes, i install everything from SD card and the apk file stay there after installation.

Even in Android you can see the .apk files under /system/app. Also applications installed by you can be backed up & later restored using software available on market.
"Normally" these apks dissapear when you download from.market, but all of.your apks are stored in your phone, the thing is that you have to hav permission to do that, when you download an apk (the single file) and store it in sd card to install it, the apk is copied to the phone.

But if u back up ur apps as .apk and install them later using softwares (with exception of Titanium backup) u will loose connection between the app and android market (that means no updates)
the best option is to backup ur apps with titanium backup along with user data and restore it using the same

Suppose I buy a android phone (with android 2.1 so you cannot install apps from SD card) in which I installed an application named XYZ from Market. Now, there is a apk file for XYZ which gets downloaded somewhere in the phone memory and then it gets installed automatically.
Now, I just want to know, where does this apk file go after XYZ is installed? Does it stay in phone memory with the installed files of XYZ.
If it goes to phone memory and not deleted from there, then phone memory

Remember that an .apk file its a variant of the .jar files when you install an .apk this file gets stored inside the phone along with its necesary dependencies when the app starts, the os reads this file line by line while the app is executed.
In short terms the .apk file its the application itself that need a proper interpreter to run, in that way when you install and app to the phone, it copies this file and links the dependencies, so the .apks downloaded from makret are stored directly inside the app folder, in that way you can extract them from this folder and use it in another android phone.
You are relying too much on the windows ways of things. You see an exe file installion in windows essentially unpacking everything (other things aside) where it is needed and you then often see a bunch of files and folders. This is not what happens in android, the apk file is conserved when installed and can be found in the root part of your phone. Its data/app/ if installed on your phone, mnt/asec. (or something like asec) if installed on your sd card. You can copy that file to your sd card or send it to another device and install it again. I did just that today (I sent an apk to a friend)
anyway i dont think its same if i delete .apk + odex files from /data/app as i uninstall it with titanium backup. i think TB will be delete also data stored by the app inside the database (its the place where the apps are saving data, settings, etc...)
In case you are installing from Android Market:
1. When you are at market, it doesn't ask you to download. You will only get option either to install or update the existing app.
2. If you are a normal user, after installing, you won't be able to see the apk file anywhere on your memory card. But if you are a root user or with the help of special file managers and specific apps like root explorer and terminal emulators, you can locate those spk files in the phone's hidden memory.
3. If you are a root user, or with the help above mentioned type of apps, you can locate the apk files in phone memory and copy it on your memory card and distribute it to your wish.
4. If you are worried for paid apps and losing your phone or apps because of resetting or any other reason then stop worrying. A record of your paid apps is stored in google servers. So, even if you reset your phone or lose your phone, once you log in to a your new android device with the same google account, it will automatically show your paid apps. You don't have to pay for it again. Just need to install it again. This is applicable only if you are paying for the app through android market and you are logging into your android device with the same google account you had before losing your apps.
In case of installing via your SD card:
1. apk files are just like java files (.jad or .jar). You can download it on your PC from various sources and transfer it to your SD card or any of your friends' via USB, bluetooth or any other way.
2. After transfering the apk file to your SD card, it doesn't get automatically installed. You have to click it or open it to install, just like how we double click the exe file in windows.
3. Whether installed or not installed, the apk file you transfer to your SD card will always remain there unless and untill you or someone else delete it or you format your memory card.
4. Once installed, a copy of the same apk file would also be there in your phone's hidden memory, which you can access using special apps.
If you worried about losing your apps, try searching for other apps which backups apk... you can do so at android market. Moreover, also search on the net about having root access on your android device.. it'll let you access files in your phone's memory.
I hope, this would solve down all your queries !!!

1) just a general query that just like exe file got unpacked after double clicking on it and install its files in c: genrally, does the same happen with apk, jad and jar files?
2) just want to clear out that phone memory which is hidden for normal users contains the copy of only those apk files that are currently installed on the phone and not the ones that are uninstalled or not installed at all?

1. I am not sure about JAD and JAR files, but yes, APK files unpack itself to get installed. You can come to know the exact size/space that would be taken by the app directly from the android market. Details would be given there.
2. Yes, the phone memory would be having copy of files only which is installed. There would be no copy of any apk file which in not installed.

Short and simple. Deleting the apk file from /data/app removes the app.

Hello,
I decided to write this because I had a hell of a time finding out how to do this - all the information is here on the forums but not all in one place so you can just read and install the custom ROM.
The ROM that is available that I have successfully tested is CM7_RC1_X8_004
You will need the following programs:
SuperOneClick - to root your phone
Busybox - from the android Market
Xrecovery
Super Manager - from the Market
X10 Flashtool
and your ROM
Rooting
~~~~~
So First we want to root the phone, we will need to set the USB debugging mode to on. Go into settings - applications - Development and click on the tick next to USB debugging to turn it on. Plug the Phone into the PC via the USB Cable.
At the end of this post are files download SuperOneclick and extract it into a folder on your desktop then run the exe file called SuperOneClick.exe and click on root, it will scroll through a load of things then come up with a message that says "Root files have been installed would you like to run a test?" To which I always say Yes then it says "A su command will now be sent to your phone please hit allow in superuser" (there were no messages on my phone so I just hit OK on that message) Then a message comes up asking you to donate, so if that utility is handy for you feel free to donate to the makers of SuperOneclick!
You can now turn off USB debugging.
Installing BusyBox
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go to settings - sound and display and set the screen timeout to 30 mins I have found it to keep locking while installing Busybox as it takes a while to do.
Go to the market and search for Busybox and install and accept permissions on it. once this part of the application has installed you need to run it as it has only been copied to the phone - now you have to actually install it.
So run the busybox app and say OK to the message from the developer (reading it first of course) then it will ask you for permission which you say yes.
Next we see a screen saying Status: Working, Your phone is Rooted, amount of free space in system is 10128kb, Busybox not found. (we haven't installed it yet.)
The first time I did this it took ages to get anywhere and ages to install so just be patient and wait for it. Choose Busybox 1.17.1 but change the location of the install to system/xbin (the drop down box at the bottom of the page.) Then Click Install. For me this time it failed so lets try v 1.18 and the default location. back up and then relaunch busybox installer.
I found I had to change the settings a couple times when I installed before to get it to install, you might not find that. Sure enough this time it installed fine using v1.18 and the default save location.
installing Super Manager and Xrecovery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First you need to download the new ROM files from here:

Go to the third post and download the rom: (currently

Once it's down extract the files to another folder in your desktop and you should have the files LiveWallpapers.zip, Update.zip, changelog.txt and a BASEBAND folder.
Then connect your phone and copy the three files and the folder to a new directory on your SDcard. (I called mine ROM) Now remove the cable from the PC not forgetting to unmount it first.
Then you need to download Super Manager from the market and install it then run it - choose File explorer - click on the favourite icon at the bottom(the picture of a folder and a heart) and choose SD card, navigate to your folder where you stored the files and click on all the ticks next to the files and folder and then when they are all selected click on any file and hold it till a menu appears and choose copy (This is to copy the files)
Then Click on the favourites one again and choose root path. Then go to System and then Bin and then click on one file and hold the button till the menu appears and scroll to the bottom where you see paste and click on it and this will paste the files into this folder.
X10 Flash tool

Next we need to use the X10 Flastool so download it from

Once downloaded you need to extract the files and run X10FlashTool.exe.
Then before you plug the phone back in you need to put it into USB debugging mode again. Go into settings - applications - Development and click on the tick next to USB debugging to turn it on. Plug the phone back into the PC.
In the X10Flashtool click on the button that says ask root perms and press allow on the phone when it comes up and in the FlashTool it will say "INFO - Root Access Allowed."
Then Click Optimize and it will then reboot your phone, let the phone come back up and then in x10 Flasher click ask root perms and it should say Allowed again after a short time.
Then click on xRecovery. Power the phone off and wait for 20 seconds and then power it back on. As soon as you see the words "Sony Ericsson" appear on the screen start hammering the back button. Then the phone will boot into xRecovery.
Backup your phone
Use the sound volume up and down buttons to move up and down the menus and the home button to select the option (I think the back button is back as well). Choose the backup/restore option, then backup to backup your phone to the SD card (First the system and then the data)
Then when it's finished it will say complete and you can go ahead and put the new rom on the phone. Choose install Custom Zip, then choose custom zip from SDcard. Navigate to the directory you put your ROM in and choose update.zip it will ask you if you are sure so choose yes and it will update your phone.
Once it says Install from SDcard complete hit backup then choose the top option reboot phone.
Your Phone will then reboot into Android 2.3

Restoring your Phone to It's previous working state
To restore you phone back to how it was before you started all this all you need to do is Boot xRecovery by hammering the back button once you see the very first Sony Ericsson which takes you into xRecovery.
Then use the volume up and down on the side of the phone and choose backup and restore and you can choose advanced restore to restore a different component or just do a restore to do the whole phone back as it was.
I have just restored back successfully!

I don't really think so, but there is always the possibility when flashing your phone that you might Brick it.
I didn't break mine and I will do this to test every new firmware that comes out and because I've done it once most of the hard work is done which was installing xRecovery.
In short I offer you no guarantee this won't brick your phone what you do is at your own risk, but I had no trouble.

super manager isn't copying and pasting files. i follow the guide and when i click paste, nothing happens.
edit: it just says "prepare to copy" when i try to copy the files, then nothing when i paste

In supermanager open the folder system and then select the folder Bin, you have to change the folder from read to read and write first before u can copy anything.
thanks, realized i hadn't given super manager super user permission. what do i do differently when installing Rachts Roms because they don't come with an update.zip?

When u have Xrecovery and make an backup it will create a folder in SD card "backup" after u download the Rom from racth u put the folder on the backup folder, then in XRecovery u go to backup then restore, u will see the rom there, just press ok and it will do the rest like the zip file.

and on the same vein as the others i am having some problems pasting the contents of the ROM. i have given Super manager root prves. but it says not enough free desc space which seems right to me cus there is only 128Mb storage on the phone.
i feel like i am missing sumthing basic please assist me, Thanks!

Based on my experience.. I didn't really know what I've done that make my phone cannot boot... it's all because not really prepared... Need to do some research and reading 1st..
Luckily, when done some reading, I manage to boot the phone after flashing with SEUS..
And after that... I prepare to do checklist... Now.. Everything seems OK...

With your phone did you get a 2GB SD card? I did with mine and that's where you need to copy the ROM files to(you need to copy the files in windows to the SD card). The only thing I was copying with super manager was the xRecovery files. (and I'm not sure I needed to do that since you kinda install xrecovery on the flash tool, I just posted exactly what I did)
mss_2212, yeah using the SE repair might get you out of a few scrapes, it's good that they offer such a utility to completely flash your phone back to the latest SE update!

I'm still setting it up to how I like it but so far so good - it's nie and stable for me and WI-FI works which is a dream.

I tried to install the last 2.3.3 CM7 with this guide, but I get a problem with the X10 flashtool... In fact, I don't understand if I have to lauch the .exe in my phone, or in the PC. Because with the phone I can "ask root perms" but I get an error (it says me to use usb debug the phone and install...) but I think that I've followed the guide And since the PC, there is no file in the "firmware" fold...
So I install the custom ROM, without that step, and it success, even if I get another problem, but I think, because of the instability of the rom (no market, and no possibility to dl by internet)

Not quite sure what you're getting at, I will try to help if I can (I'm still a bit of a noob really myself)
You need to run the x10 flash tool on the PC with your phone connected in usb debugging mode before it will work.

The Market and other applications are included in the latest version(.6a as of this writing) in a zip file called gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip to install them you need to boot into xRecovery and choose install custom zip and then point it to that file which is next to the install.zip. Then the market will work.
v.6a is really nice but ultimately I had to revert because I needed to take some pics but a lot of stuff is working well!
For those of you that would like the ability to transfer files between the internal memory, microSD card, and/or usb data drive from your PC, there is a way. Download and install QtADB.
NOTE: I have updated the instructions. This should work without having to download the Android SDK.
1. First you need to download and install the flavor of Java you require (x86 or x64). This is required for ADB and AAPT.
2. Next download QtADB. Copy the "QtADB_0.8.0_windows_with_libs" folder to the "C:\Program Files\" folder.
3. Finally, download ADB and AAPT binaries for windows. Copy the files to the "C:\Program Files\QtADB_0.8.0_windows_with_libs" folder.

Once you get it all loaded, connect your A500 to your PC via the micro USB port. Launch QtADB. The first time you run QtADB, it will ask you for the path to ADB and AAPT. This should be "C:\Program Files\QtADB_0.8.0_windows_with_libs" folder. You should be able to access all your storage internal and external to your A500. I am no expert on this application, but will try to help if I can.
Attached are screenshots of QtADB abd attached to my A500. The Apps and Messages tabs do not work, but so far everything else seems to. Enjoy.

@dalepl - to answer your question I have posted this SIMPLE method previously. I have emphasied the word SIMPLE because it's not as clever and structured as your method but is probably more suited to us non-programming noobs.
For anyone who wants to see the contents of their sd card on their PC and be able to copy/transfer files from one to the other, why not give this a try, it is very simple and works for my A500.
Before you start you need your A500 to be rooted and you need "USB Mount All version 1.3" from the Market cost $1.99
(1) Have your PC switched on, don't connect your A500 yet but switch the A500 on.
(2) Run USB Mount All and you will see your sd card as a "Device" named "ext_sdcard".
(3) Press the tab "Mount" next to your ext_sdcard. You will see two messages "Mount has been granted Superuser permission" and "Device successfully mounted".
(4) Press the "Menu" tab in the top Right hand corner of the screen, this opens a small box entitled "Settings". Press on "Settings" and you get 3 options, make certain all 3 options are ticked, ticking them if they are not. (The important thing is to have "Mount on Bootup" ticked"). Press the Back Arrow twice to get back to Home Page or where ever you started from.
(5) Re-boot the A500 and after it is back running connect it to your PC using mini usb connector.
(6) Now check your PC and open Windows Explorer, you will find under your A500 Device most of the folder/directories that are in /mnt/sdcard (which isn't all that relevent to this) BUT importantly you will find a folder/directory entitled "ext_sdcard" which for those of you who noticed is the exact name that "USB Mount All" called your sd card.
(7) Now use Windows Explorer to copy and paste whatever you want into the "ext_sdcard" folder.
(8) Please note that when you start to copy files you will get up a warning box stating "Do you want to copy XXXXX to your device?". You are given 2 choices (1) No skip this file or (2) Yes.
(9) Put a tick in the box at the bottom Left and click on "Yes".
(10) When finished safely disconnect your A500 from your PC and re-boot your A500.
(11) After re-boot go back into "USB Mount All", chose top Right menu and settings box and remove the tick from the 3rd option "Mount on Bootup". Each time you are going to copy, move or delete files first of all put the tick back in the 3rd box and when you're done take it out.
Your Done. If you use any File Explorer to look at /mnt/external_sd you will see all the files residing on your sd card including those you've just copied.
I think the reason is people wish there were a simpler way than to have to download 13 programs and do this do that...

You may be right. Looking closer I am going to change the directions. You do not have to install the SDK to get this to work. You can download ADB and AAPT files from the QtADB site.
I believe someone else in another thread mentioned Droid Explorer. Works great for me.

I took a look at this one and although it does look good and does most of the same thing QtADB does, I still perfer QtADB. For one, I can delete, move, and copy files from the A500 external storage to the PC and vice versa from right within QtADB. I did not spend much time with Droid Explorer and it may be able to do the same thing, but I did not find it. All in all, I guess it will be up to each user to pick the one they like. Both seem to be good options.

I use WiFi File Explorer, from the Market. I can easily transfer files directly between my PC and my SD card over the same WiFi net. See http://www.appbrain.com/app/wifi-file-explorer/com.dooblou.WiFiFileExplorer for details. Don't even need the USB cable! My mobile phone can act as a WiFi hotspot (HTC Desire Froyo from Telstra) so I'm never anywhere that this can't work for me.

Good to hear. I saw many people asking in other threads about this ability, but had not seen anyone mention how except for taking your micrSD card out and using an adapter to hook it up to your PC. I have been using QtADB since I got my HTC Droid Incredible a year ago and gave it a try with the A500 and it worked, so I thought I would let everyone know. It is good that now there are three alternatives listed for everyone.

I should just add, I think the default browse folder when you install it is /mnt/sdcard. Just change the default to /mnt in the app's menu, and then on the pc you can browse to either sdcard or external_sd from the local IP address the program gives you on the tablet.

Glad it worked for you.
I use ES File Explorer, its free and fairly straight forward. I can access any shared file on my PC and move/copy any file from my A500 to my PC and vise-versa. It also accesses Dropbox, which is handy. Probably not a perfect solution, but it works well enough for me. I'm sure there are other file explorer apps out there that do the same thing, but I've been using ES since I got my Archos 5IMT way back when so I'm used to it.

Nice. The real difference between using a file explorer on the tablet and the solution I gave is that no shared folders or dropbox are needed. You can access all the folders on the PC and all the storage on the A500. The interface is just like the Windows Explorer, so there is no big learning curve. I do like that this is showing people different ways to get to the same solution. Now they can use the one that best fits them.
There's some software I'd like to get, but it's unavailable in the market. When I go to groupon.be e.g., there is a download link for the android market, but it pops up the amazon app store where it isn't available. I can't seem to find it in the marketplace either.
Same for the tweakers.net app, whatsapp, wordpress, colruyt collect & go,...
How do I go about these things?
If you have an Android phone, you can just download the app, use an app called Appsaver to copy it to your phone's SD card, and then you can either email it to yourself or put it in your Dropbox.
If you don't have an Android phone, it could be a bit harder. You'll have to find the apk file somewhere online. Usually typing in the app name + apk into Google will find it on one of many websites that host Android apps, like apktop.
If you really can't find it at all after doing all of the above, then you could always just try politely requesting that someone here send it to you. I'm sure you'll find someone willing to help!
That's a good idea, since I do have an Android phone! Is there a way that I can make the normal market open when clicking market links instead of the Amazon app store?

I tend to download it on my phone, then use ES File Explorer to go to /data/app and send it to my Dropbox. Then I just pull it with my Fire.
I succeeded in copying the .apk's from my phone to my Kindle, but when I click them in File Expert, the install won't succeed.
If you don't want to use a file explorer app to search around hidden Android system folders to find thess apps, there is a much easier way for the lay people (non-experts).
(I already presume you have a file explorer app eg. root explorer installed on your KF, explained in other threads particularly the rooting guide - root explorer (paid) and ES file explorer (free) are both good)
Go to Market and install appinstaller (many names many version, I use "appinstaller" by gregory House) to you Android phone. Use its "backup" function and it will show all the third party (non-system) apps you have installed. Pick the ones you want to move over to the KF (remember to include the appinstaller itself!), or check them all (full backup of all 3rd party apps). It will save them in a folder called "appsaver" - OK you still need to use a file explorer to find this folder, but at least it is in one single folder which is not in the root /system folder.
Hook up your Android phone to your PC and use Windows Explorer to find this "appsaver" folder and copy it somewhere in your PC. Unhook your phone and hook up your KF. Copy and paste the "appsaver" folder from your PC into the KF (which appears as a drive in Windows - don't put this inside any other folders in the KF). Unhook the KF.
In KF, run your file explorer app - most of them start default in the /sdcard folder which is where the "appsaver" folder is. Open the "appsaver" folder and you see all the .apk (app installation programs) you saved from your Android phone. Find and run "appinstaller.apk" to install this app. Now you can run this app and use the "install" function (it will detect the "appsaver" folder and all the apps inside) to install any apps you moved over from your phone.

Rookie mistake:
Click the little "Setting" (cogwheel) icon at the top right corner -> "More" -> "Device" -> "Allow installation of applications" - switch "ON"
I have not forgotten the "Allow installation of applications"-option, but thanks for the kind reminder. I will try the appinstaller method, thanks!
This seems to be an issue with the market link redirecting to the Amazon app store, right? Check out this thread.
tl;dr: Rename MarketIntentProxy.apk in /system/app to MarketIntentProxy.apk.bak
Of course, this assumes you have the Android Market installed on your Fire.
I have tried what you suggested, Slim_thumb, but it does seem to be due to something else, as I still can't install the apps Twunch, Twerkers.net, Groupon, Collect&Go. When trying it blandly tells me "not installed".
