Goodock USB-C to HDMI Adapter ( with DeX ) Review - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Accessories

I recently purchased a Goodock USB-C to HDMI adapter. The package just included the adapter itself with no brand specific logo on the package or device. The adapter has a USB-C plug/cable (for connecting to your phone), a HDMI port, a USB-A port and a USB-C port (for connecting power to the adapter which also charges the phone).
The adapter is marketed for specific devices such as the Nintendo Switch, Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus/Note 8, Macbook, ChromeBook, Dex Station. The part that really caught my attention is the adapter was marketed as being able to put the Samsung S8/Note 8 into the DeX mode in addition to the normal screen mirroring of most HDMI adapters support.
As soon as I got the adapter, I started to play around with it. I had a Samsung S9 Plus, a HDMI to VGA adapter, USB-C power supply and a Dell computer monitor that I used for my test setup.
Based on my initial tests here is what I noticed:
1) If you connect the adapter to the phone, but do not connect a USB-C power to the USB-C to HDMI adapter, it seems to only work in mirror mode.
2) Once you connect power to the USB-C to HDMI adapter, it goes into DeX mode.
3) If you do not connect a USB mouse, the phone screen will turn into a pad that you can use to control the mouse. Once you connect a mouse, the screen just goes dark. For my test setup, I used a USB keyboard (that has two built-in USB ports) and a wireless mouse (receiver plugged into the ports of the USB keyboard).
4) There were a few random disconnects but they were very quick. I am not 100% sure I can blame it on the USB-C to HDMI adapter, since I also have a HDMI > VGA adapter in my setup, but I never had this issue using the same HDMI > VGA adapter with my Raspberry Pi so it was probably the USB-C to HDMI adapter.

The DeX mode is pretty cool. I am not going to go into all the expected features, because you can probably find other websites / reviews with details or just read the Samsung info ( http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/apps/samsung-dex/ ). I will share a few high level things I noticed so far using DeX:
Some of the applications seem to open in a window that basically looks like it would on your phone, but others (such as Chrome) allow you to resize the window. Using Chrome on DeX was very similar to using Chrome on a computer. I also liked the fact you can have multiple windows open - for example Chrome and another application. Using Google Play Movies, I was able to put a movie on full screen. I did run into a few application that would not run at all, but none were apps I felt that I would have missed - and of course they are still usable on the phone when you leave DeX mode.
While you are in DeX mode, the device is still works as a phone. I was able to receive and send text messages, and answered a test call just fine. If most of your computer apps are web based or available in Android, I think DeX is a great way to leverage the power of your existing smartphone. I wrote this blog post in DeX mode, and really after using it for a while you just feel like it is a normal computer.
At the end of the day, I don't know if I will find DeX mode to be useful or just a neat gimmick but either way the Goodock adapter is much cheaper than the official Samsung options and is a great way to play around with the capability. Even if you don't like DeX mode, the adapter supports screen mirroring.
Bottom line: If you are interested in playing with DeX mode, then this Goodock adapter is a great low cost option. Just keep in mind, you may see random disconnects.

Thanks for the post! I've been debating on getting the Dex Pad but I know it will just be another toy that I'll play with for a week and then put aside. However, buying this for much cheaper might justify it.

Yeah so far my own issue is the random disconnect but it isn't too bad. I need to contact the comapny and see what they say, could just be something with my unit.

What source of power can you use? Can you use the fast charge adapter that came with S9+ ?

Thanks for the post! I will wait and see what the Galaxy Note 9 will offer on August 9th.

I bought it as well. When it works, it works great. The only problem is that sometimes I get a lot of flickering. It is not disconnecting, just the screen flickers heavily. I don't know what the problem is. Is it my hdmi cable? I think not as I use this same cable with my Intel PC Stick and I never have a problem. Is it something else...? Any ideas?

Can you test the following:
- Try another HDMI cable (however as you stated, the cable works with another device so it shouldn't be an issue)
- Try another HDMI TV/monitor
This might help narrow down the issue. It could be the unit itself.

So, just an update. The Goodock was not faulty, neither was the hdmi cable. It was the TV that had the problem! I tested Gooddock on another TV (newer, more modern) and it worked great without disconnecting once, without even blinking...

I have the same noname adapter (looks very similar), DeX works with S9+/exynos on official Android 9 Pie, but there are some small issues:
only FHD resolution on QHD monitor. Is OK - Dex is limited to FHD with any dock (even Dex Pad) or HDMI adapter?
USB-A works if directly connected to mouse/keyboard, but not works if kb/mouse is connected through the external USB hub (even with connected power)
my monitor 27" DELL U2713HM has usb-hub, but mouse/kb not works in DeX if connected to it (but works for my PC connected to display port)

I observed a Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Dex Pad with a QHD monitor display at QHD on YouTube. Given the correct HDMI 2.0 adapter-cables and any USB-C to HDMI hub, QHD should show up.

My HDMI adapter is 2.0 (should support 4K), HDMI cable is HDMI 1.4 (I suppose, not verified), but QHD option is grayed out in Dex settings: only 1920x1080 and 1600x900 are enabled. Samsung support stated that QHD is not officially supported currently on DeX anywhere, even on dex pad.

[Q] hacking docks to provide audio, hdmi or sync (MHL and stuff)

I've spent some time searching looking for something on the subject, but haven't found anything that seems to cover it (does that make me special (I did laugh at the video), but enough off topic).
so I specifically have the Samsung Galaxy Note. though I realise in a lot of ways its really just a big S2 in most regards. and I suspect several other devises that would be comparible.
I'm currentlty using a dual charging dock station which I bought cheaply of amazon, and that gives me sync and power. having looked inside the case there loads of spare room in there. and so I'm wondering about playing around with the MHL adapter and ideally something like the audio out with the official samsung dock.
from what research I've done the note senses what type of dock its in by the resistance on pins 4 and 5. now even with my basic electrical skills it seems rather easy to put in a 3 way switch to select between these
obviously the guts for the HDMI out would be from a MHL adapter, and that should be possible to power through the standard connectors on the current dock. but what I cant seem to find would be the associated parts for the audio (dont want to buy the official samsung dock just to rip it apart) (one thread on here about stripping the cable back to power and then the 3 inner wires were left, right and ground, but didn't see any evidence of that method working)
the audio aspect has another relevence for me, as I'm also wondering about a note dock/speaker set up (cheap 2.1 speakers, rehouse the sub to a case that incorperates the mUSB connector, audio components, and power, so that other than speaker cables and one power cable that'd be it (currently use a Sony NWA-3000 plugged into old pc speakers for such night time listening)
so thoughts and advise (specifically on the audio aspect)
Thatz pretty impressive. I too have that sony dock. I think about modification of it so that i can plug in my hd2 in it. Ie just to put an micro usb plug out from it, so that i can charge my phone while i plug in 3.5mm jack from the sony dock.
Thatz all about mine.. now letz look into ur case.
Cant u try out 3.5 mm jack for audio o/p?
Or else u can check out pinouts.ru for pin config of hdmi, coz, u r going to take out hdmi from sg note any way. So u can rip the cable apart and take out audio and video wires, connect the video cables to tv and audio to dock/ amp.
But i suggest that 3.5 jack will be the easier way.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
So I don't know about it, I would say that it really isn't that feasible. Besides putting a different resistance you would also need to route the data lines to a different location to the MHL to HMDI converter.
If you were to do the video or USB you couldn't do audio. From what I understand there is a IC that looks at the resistance on the ID pin and puts the audio signals on the data lines. Once again you run into the same problem that you have with the video adapter, routing the data lines.
got a brief schematic for layout. I'm buying some cheap bits now (MHL adapter, USB soundcard, USB OTG cable)
first a few explanations on the schematic, software I used didn't have many switches on it, so plan to use a 4 pole double throw like this rather than the 2 sets of 2p2t shown in the diagram
secondly, not sure if I need to short pins 4&5 for OTG, still reading stuff

guyz, i wanna ask something, in order to use MHL adapter, does the phone need to support MHL protocol? and the protocol resides in the hardware part or software part of the phone?
The MHL lives in the phones hardware is the simplest. If you find the Galaxy S2 hack pack it will show you a block diagram of how the MHL exists there.

as giritrobbins said it is hardware based.
it shares the microUSB connector, but uses an entirely different signalling. hence why it has to be separated out. otherwise a hub would do every thing I'm trying to do here
Hi, folks just thought I would ask how this project is going ? It's really quite fascinating.
Pin 5 (ground) can be carried through to everything.
OTG requires ID (pin4) to be connected to Gnd (pin 5).
In the diagram above S2 is not really needed.
If you want to switch electronically, there are lots of ICs for doing that.
Here is one picked entirely at random: http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/FS/FSA3000.pdf
MHL will be the trouble spot, USB is much more forgiving.
I've seen docks like the one you're tying to build on eBay with built in MHL; is that what you're after?
Well, if you look at the service manuals, they have lots of details about where stuff is coming from.
The MHL is all digital coming from the HDMI chip. There is however audio, which you'd need to enable in the snd driver as
a RX enabled, and also it looks like the I2S would have to set up the microUSB chip to export the analog
audio through the USB port.
At least in the case of the 8960 systems (Galaxy S3, OneX?) this is the USB driver setup.
The audio is coming directly from the qualcomm codec chip and you'd have to enable it with
the tabla stuff, then the USB, but it might be programmed to sense USB headset.
---------- Post added at 10:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:10 PM ----------
Basically, if you want analog output only, you need to use the MUS_I2C to tell the Fairchild USB analog mux to enable the
audio lines. Then you would need an audio amp because the codec output can only make it to the analog mux
and I'm not sure what kind of buffering is on the uUSB chip. But if you are going this route, you might as well use
the headphone jack. It's not digital unless you use the MHL.
Two things to bear in mind when demultiplexing the USB connector:
The analog audio out ("CarKit") has a signal that goes below ground.
Some electronic demultiplexors might not handle that.
The MHL signal goes into the Gigahertz.
Don't try switching that with a Radio Shack relay or connecting using loose wires.
MHL uses the two data lines for TMDS data and the ID pin for CBUS.
Hi, folks just thought I would ask how this project is going ? It's really quite fascinating.

[Q] USB Keyboard not detected (micro USB)

Hi,
I had a new case and keyboard arrive for my nexus today but the keyboard doesn't seem to be detecting at all. I've been browsing all evening trying to find a fix but to no avail so far...
These are the specifics;
Nexus 7 wifi 32gb stock rom, JB 4.2.1
This exact MINI USB Keyboard (Can't identify manufacturer as the keyboard is built in to the case)
Mini usb - micro usb connector
I have verified the usb connector is working fine as I am able to plug in a mini usb charger to the nexus through it and it charges fine.
When I plug in the keyboard it doesn't work or seem to be detected in any way.
Where am I going wrong?
I can't try a USB OTG cable as I am not connecting a full size USB peripheral. I installed usb host diagnostics and ran it with the keyboard connected but I'm not sure how to interpret the results which are as follows;

Additional info;
I added a 51-android.rules file as per the process in this thread, and included ALL manufacturers and ID codes but still no fix
You *do* need an OTG cable. It has two pins (4 and 5) connected. That's what tells the tablet that it's in host mode. If you want to adapt yours, here's the procedure (obviously, use at your own risk!):
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...iy-making-your-own-otg-cable-image-heavy.html
tjupille is correct, a normal micro USB cable will only have 4 pins connected, the 5th pin needs to be grounded on the tablet side of the cable. If you can find/make a such a cable and if it's a standard USB HID keyboard then it should work out of the box on a stock N7 without the need for any special configuration.
I have also seen where some non-stock ROMs lose the OTG support. This wouldn't be your case as you are running what looks to be a stock ROM. Now then, I have had a few OTG cables go bad. Some of them are just made cheaply.
Thanks all, I understand the otg cable setup much better now. I figured that with a standard connection android should see the device as an input device and it would just work. Have a cable on order now. I have the kit to mod my existing adapter but for such a small amount of money I'd rather not gamble frying my nexus. Look forward to when it arrives as I keep going to use the hard keys!

dealextreme has some otg cables, you can purchase it.
A # of eBay stores carry these Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable, originally designed for the Samsung Galaxry devices - I got one as a bundle along with the swivel case & screen protector, etc. Inexpensive & it works - on 4.1.2 and on 4.2.1 depending on the rom & kernel.
One of them selling a pair for under $5, free shipping and they are based in the LAX area of CA, mine arrived in less than a week - vendor has been around for years and sourced them mostly from oversea. The short piece of connecting cable is a bit longer than picture but still fit flat & tight against the bottom/side of the N7 with the case, so it won't be too bad flying 6 or 10+ hours with my own huge library collection of DVD's on a stick. Not a vendor / product endorsement & plenty of sources to get yours, plus Amazon ...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Micro-US...338153?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item56517d1069
Mine was quite difficult to find as it's a micro one end and mini the other, but I've located one and it's ordered. Thanks for the links guys. I'm in the uk, it seems to be particularly difficult to find the one I need here for some reason!
Just my $0.02 on the whole OTG thing though.... why can't it be that simple to just connect a usb device and for it to work like things used to?? Why the need for an adapter? Surely these keyboard cases should all be OTG wired for maximum compatibility as a keyboard is never going to be a host device!
Ho hum...
Then if i understand good i need otg cable to be able to connect my keyboard ! The problem is my keyboard is already micro usb and i just find
OTG micro usb to usb 2.0 .
How to do then ?
Well I'm glad I found this thread after a couple of hours of fruitless searching (& mostly getting stuff about flash drives).
I tried to connect a case logic mini usb keyboard which I acquired for the princely sum of ten bucks, by using the cable that shipped with the Nexus and a usb gender changer, but the tablet did not recognize the device. I've had no trouble hooking the tablet up to a pc for chrome debugging, file xfers etc, and I tested the mini kb on a couple of pcs.
I thought it was something like this OTG adaptor thing, but couldn't figure out what was special about it vs. bog-standard usb plugs. I ordered one along with a powered usb hub, in case that was the/another issue, and look forward to getting this thing to work.
Thanks!
Edit: Sweet! The OTG adaptor worked like a charm, and with a powered hub I can run a wireless mini-mouse too.
Hi guys, I know this thread is quite old, but I have very, very important problem:
I've recently bought the same built-in to case keyboard with two wires: micro and mini.
The problem is that the micro one connected to the Nook Tablet or HTC Sensation does not work (although in case of HTC Sensation it is detected!).
When I connect the same keyboard to my sister's no-name tablet (something-made-in-China) via miniUSB it works like a charm! With no adapters, nothing!
The question is: should I try to find OTG adapter (and if yes, then which one? miniUSB to microUSB, or rather microUSB to microUSB?) ?
Thanks in advance for all your replies...

OTG for the nexus 7 is a bit different in terms of hardware requirements. Pins 4 and 5 on the micro USB side have to be shorted together for it to work. You will likely need an OTG cable that says in the description that it is compatible with the Nexus 7. Amazon and eBay are decent places to go.

Take care guys.
Hi and thank you !

I have the same problem i know that the realtek wifi device is usb connected to the soc but other then that i cannot find any other options of ways of connection more devices to it. I cannot find a datasheet of this chip on the www. And i have no idea what the right pins are. Maybe we can connect a hub to that usb port what is used by the wireless device and do it this way but i have no idea if this will work.
And no out of the box this little tablet does not have OGT.
The soc in fact does support's it (2x host 1x OGT) but it is not connected to anything on this pcb design. If i knew the pins i would surely try to mod it.
Thank you for providing information to everyone
ok, i have OTG working now..
this is just a power issue, i haved used a OTG+Power cable, that's working fine
next step, make the bluetooth dongle working ...

The OTG really works with this type of cable?
If so, then we should be using bluetooth dongles easily (as long as the firmware supports it or has drivers that can detect it)
Going to try the OTG+power cable, this would really make a difference in terms of usability.
Also guys the stock battery is weak. I replaced it with "2500mAh Rechargeable Li-ion Battery for Samsung Galaxy S 3 III I9300", only had to ditch the speaker, since the battery is quite bigger.

No this wont work on the S18 tab. But yes if you replace the wireless realtek module and for example connect a hub to those pins and if android has the firmware you could connect more devices to the hub. Not sure if this will work through.

But really nice let me know some progress it indeed makes a huge different in use usability, i also replaced the battery with a 1800mah ion battery from a dead tom tom system(broken display), that had the same voltage(3.7) but the battery was dead so i had to put back the default one since i didn't had anything else that did fit in this tiny little tab haha.
Sorry for the quite slow response.
thank you very much

So is it possible to connect a game controller through the OTG + Power cable?

Please see the image of the soc. It does not have OTG on default. You have to got the datasheet and solder a OTG port on the soc itself.
That's actually the only thing that sucks about this device. No OTG, out of the box and no soc datasheet. Limilted support to all of the internal stuff itself. Is what makes it less fun for most of us. We are no pro's or people who are really good in reserving without a little bit of documentation or help. I would be glad if JXD would release more stuff about this device so more people can take a look at it and have fun with it in a diffrent way because the device itself it pretty useless out of the box in my opinion.
As i already said Otg is working fine on mine ....
I have sucessfully used my s18 with a USB GPS + powered USB otg cable and usbgps4 droid

So you're saying that otg worked on your S18-03-XXXX device?
Strange i still did not had time to check it yet. And is also is strange because manufacturer does not say it had any. The soc is capable of 3 otg devices on the host but those aren't connected following all the technical details i read on their website and other re-seller's website. If you pull the device brand new out of the box and connect a otg device it should not work according to the manuals and details on their website, or they changed the pcb design and newer version has this feature enabled.. Can you post your model number?
Otg works with external power
I hope this is no considered spamming, as I posted same info on other thread.
I have s18-03-201305-4GB-01748.
I guess they are not listing device as otg capable because device is not delivering any power to otg devices, so you need always power injecting cable. Otherwise device is not anyway restricted. Actually firmware has quite extensive hardware support as you can see by browsing driver folders on device.
I registered just to tell you that otg works perfectly with power injecting cable. Tested 2 TB NTFS drive and apple usb - Ethernet dongle. Both work well. Also you can use this device as WiFi ap with Ethernet dongle. I am planning to use this as portable server. I just hope somebody gets interested making updated firmware.
I may be repeating but I say once more. There is no need to do any hardware hacking to get otg working. Just get power injecting USB cable. You might have to put WiFi off and back on to get your USB device connected. I think this triggers device initialization.

Thanks Frank and Nitrow.
Yes, don't give up too quickly when testing Host mode on USB ports.
They might have no charge pump, an inadequate charge pump or inadequate capacitance for inrush current.
You usually will need an OTG adapter to ground the ID pin.
A power splitter cord will work, but you can't usually find one locally.
I use a "back-powering" hub.
That's a cheapy hub that has the protection diode bypassed.
Some really cheap hubs already have it shorted.
See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25639514&postcount=8
Try a keyboard first because they draw minimal current and they have a simple driver.
Some flash drives and GPS units are real current hogs.

Yes but i wanted to make a dedicated otg connected hard-wired to the print. but those connections (pins) on the board are too small and i can still not find a soc datasheet for the rockchip. I searched on the entire internet. It still isn't there...
Step one is to get USB host mode working any way you can.
Then you can discuss hacking it internally.
The other USB ports may be internally hubbed and not do host mode.
They may not have Id connections and you'd have to hack the driver/issue device commands.

That's not the problem since it is already reported to work on never soc, i only need datasheet and chip pin-out.

It just sucks. I will sell this thing and buy myself a beagleboard instead. That's what i probably will do.
Did any of you try to run this without an battery in the unit. So only on adapter?
I am thinking of using one as an dedicated clock.
I also want to point out that there are two versions of this device for those that don't know this.

Continuum Doc - alternative options

I thought it can make sense to list here alternative options to use the continuum feature. Here is what I use:
- Aukey USB-C to HDMI adapter
- Supremery BT Keyboard within Touchpad
Good to see alternatives are working fine
Monoprice USB-C to HDMI adapter: works for video, but flaky connection. I also don't get any audio output.
Aukey USB-C to VGA adapter: the phone recognizes a USB device is connected, but doesn't work.
Microsoft Display Dock: Works well without issue of course. However, a few comments - it doesn't work without a power connection. It also doesn't like the Google dual-port USB-C charger and refuses to power up from that (despite the Google charger being capable of 5V / 3A just like the Microsoft one).
Works without issues with Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for Macbook 12 Retina. And does not need necessarily current.
Continuum works great with the "Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter" too, sound and vision go to the TV/Monitor and phone turns into Trackpad. Just like using the dock but less hassle and wires.
I also tried my Roku3, it works but can be a little flaky
It dosn't work with XCSOURCE USB-C 56k ohm to HDMI /USB 3.1 Multiport Adapter for MacBook LT11
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311536382296
USB port works great...flash drive and keyboard works smooth...BUT HDMI dosn't work at all
Everytime when HDMI cable is inserted phone throw an error with dosn't recognized USB...
Hello,
I also bought the Aukey -C USB to HDMI adapter.
But on 2 Samsung tv , I have problems of disconnection and resolution.
If anyone can help me ....
Thank you in advance
i bought vtin vs1-vvc9h from amazon. Video works.. But i could not make audio to work.
I also bought vicTsing mx-vs1-PCL005B from amazon too. And video worked but audio did not.
I know audio works on ms hd500 with same monitor and cables
The Microsoft wireless Display adaptor v2 works well in continuum mode unless you use 5GHz wifi, in which case it is extremely poor, sound and display stutters like there is no tomorrow.
My Surface pro 2 (normal extended display) has the same issues connecting to it with 5GHz wifi used.
So in short, connect to your internet with a 2.4GHz wifi AP if you intend to use The Microsoft wireless Display adaptor.
I'm quite tempted to get the dock now as one of my office PCs is about to have a catastrophic HHD fail and continuum will kill several birds with a single stone.

Some people on reddit used this and it worked. Can someone confirm?
I have a LG 42LA660s Smart TV, with Miracast enabled. I just connected my phone to a wireless display, and the Continuum works. It is not flawless but I am satisfied with it.

With the coming of the new Macbook with USB-C, there are now quite a few new and cost effective alternatives on the market. I recently bought an unbranded dongle/dock thing which is advertised as to be used with the new Macbooks. It has a USB-C connector on one end, with a USB-A port, HDMI-out port, and USB-C charging port on the other. Works really well, got it for about 1100 INR / 17.50 USD
My display dock HD 500 with a lumia 950 does only view 720p on my full HD TV. Is there any chance to force 1080p output?
I'm gonna check this tomorrow on work where mine Lumia950 and HD500 are and a Dell 24" FHD screen.
Works fine with my Surface Go tablet and LG FHD 55" television. Surface Go with USB-C kabel and LG-tv with HDMI.
And also my Lumia950 works with it on my LG-tv or at work on HP 24".
