Toshiba Thrive USB List 2ndUpdate - Thrive General

Well I just got my Toshiba Thrive and I love it. My favorite feature of this device is the full uUSB port. Just wanted to see if we can create a list of all the USB devices that work with the thrive in a specific or general sense. So keyboards speakers mouses cd drives anything u can get to work on the thrive post it and ill update the thread as often as I can. Hopefully this list will grow. Also if mods feel this is a threat feel free to close but leave a reason why.

How does a USB Webcam work??? I dont see that as possible.

Thats the point of this thread to see what devices work on the thrive evn if you have to create an app or mod it as long as it works.

OK well here is what ive been able to get to work via USB so far on my Toshiba THRiVE:
USB Docking station for external HDD w/ built in USB Hub
(I've been able to use my 250GB FreeAgentGo External HDD while having a keyboard and mouse plugged in)
Logitech Dual Action USB Controller
Replica USB SNES controller (great for emulator)
32GB jump drive
My phone as media storage (touch pro 2)
USB card reader
(It recognized multiple cards simultaneously including micro SD, SD and Compact Flash)
I'll add more later.

Updates should be more frequent now I have alot more time on my hands.

Apparently, the Toshiba Thrive can interwork with standard USB DAC:

Thought it only worked piping the mic through, people keep saying audio out doesn't work on and keep bugging me to "fix" it in my kernels and ROMs. This works for audio out as well?

Atrix usb host without media or lap dock

Not sure if usb host without a Motorola media hub / lapdock has been mentioned. I managed to get my Atrix working with full host by applying 5vdc to the usb power rail. Seems to work with any usb hub and keyboard / mouse combo long as 5vdc is present on the host side(phone microusb connector). This works in both webtop and normal android shell. Mouse control in Android just jumps from widget to widget but works normally in Webtop mode. Anyone seen a cursor apps for android?
Demo of it in action.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shvFmLRUNGA
*update* I got usb drive mounting to work!
It would seem to be very easy, Motorola seems to have blocked auto mounting without the media/lapdock (why must they be such c*&ts)
*MAKE SURE ITS FORMATED FAT32!* NTFS might be doable with a ntfs-3g module but I haven't tried yet.
Run file manager (root explorer ect...) browse to /dev/block and see what you have listed in there. I had sda and sda1 listed only when I inserted a usb drive so I knew it had to be the drive.

Run "Terminal Emulator"
su
mkdir /sdcard-ext/usb (this can be any directory you want on ether the internal or microsd)
mount -t vfat /dev/block/sda1 /sdcard-ext/usb
To unmout the drive safely before removing it. just make sure all apps that might be using the usb drive are close or it'll fail to unmount
umount /sdcard-ext/usb
That's it; your drive will now show up in the file manager and webtop. I decided on the microsd so applications could see it without messing about.
Optional
Grab gscript off the market and then run the mount / unmount script from it insted of typing it out.
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but here is what I understand about this.
By applying a constant 5V DC through a powered USB hub, we can get USB host functionality by plugging devices into the hub?
Could you be more specific, if this is not the case? Also, what adapter are you using on the Atrix side, and what cables are connected to the hub? It seems like you are using a straight microUSB male to USB male, then connecting a female to male cable from the atrix to the hub. I can't tell for sure though.
Either way, it works, which is awesome!
That's it exactly, haha. It's really just that simple.
Your micro to female A adapter isn't an OTG-specific one?
can you post links of the stuff you bought so others may do this?

It is, I got it from dealextreme
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-usb-on-the-go-host-otg-adapter-pair-50774
The rest is just a cheap dlink usb2.0 hub and a normal A to B usb cable. The +5vdc is need to activate the host port just like most newer arm soc's. This same trick works on the Nexus, Desire ect...
I would like details on where the wire needs to be soldered.
You don't need to solder any wires! That's the beauty of it!

You do need to solder wires, you need to make a bridge from the DC power to the +5vdc usb host line. The little orange wire is my bridge, each usb hub will be a little different. If you don't bridge nothing will work, the Atrix doesn't supply any power to the devices.
You think this hub would work? I have around 9 dollars of DE credit, so I wanted to get the powered hub from there as well. There's no information on how much voltage the external power supplies though.

To pin 1 correct? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USB.svg
Correct. My hub uses a USB B input but one with USB mini or micro should work just the same. All that matters is +5vdc makes it up stream to.
bad hub?
Maybe I got a bum hub. I have soldered the +5 from the power adapter terminal like in the video, to the power line of the usb hub's single "out" port. so then i plug in my atrix to that same port and the keyboard to one of the 4 "in" ports and I get nothing. seemed simple enough so maybe my usb hub is not compatible. I have usb debugging off, i have usb mounting set to none. if you do happen to notice anything i f'ed up please let me know. ill go hub shopping maybe tomorrow i guess.

Are you using a usb micro OTG adaptor, or just spliced the wires. Cause I think it needs a few pins on the usb micro side to be crossed. I haven't read into it enough.
(UPDATE) Looks like I was right the ID pin on the microusb has to be grounded.

that must be it. im just using a gender changer with a regular micro cable not thinking the otg adapter was anything special. thank you. ill rewire.
http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/blog/kate-alholas-forum-nokia-blog/2008/01/21/usb-on-the-go This shows which pins to jump, nice pictures and breakdown to making a OTG cable.

Possible to use this adapter for usb-keyboard use on the note?

Is it possible to use this cheap 5-pin Micro-USB, type B - male to 4 pin USB typ A - female adapter to plug in a usb-keyboard to the note?
Or is it something special about these OTG-cables?
Please see the attached file.

I have tried a simple adaptor and it did not work - there are very similar looking adaptors that are OTG though.
Personally, I prefer to use a mini Bluetooth keyboard with integral "mouse" touchpad or an OTG cable to connect a similar USB keyboard rather than an OTG adaptor as I worry that I may lever the adaptor by catching it and cause damage by the straining the micro USB socket in the Note.
When you plug in an OTG adaptor or cable, the Note comes up with the message "USB connector connected" - a plain adaptor does not cause a message.
The picture below shows, from top to bottom, OTG USB adaptor connector, OTG USB adaptor lead, Wireless mini keyboard with mouse "touchpad", Bluetooth mini keyboard with mouse "touchpad".
Both mini keyboards came with wireless or bluetooth receivers which do not work with the Note as, I assume, they need "Windows" type drivers. The Wireless one cannot therefore be used with the Note (even though it also has a mini USB connection - probably only for charging use) whereas the Bluetooth one does work can as it connects using the inbuilt Android/Note bluetooth rather than using the supplied mini USB bluetooth receiver.
Hope this helps!

USB-OTG (they're all the same) works perfectly with some USB keyboards and mouses but not with all of them. I'm using Genius mouse and Microsoft Wired 200 keyboard.
Thanks, i'll try it. If it works it works
btw, neat bluetooth keyboard/mouse you got there!
I have a mini-wireless USB keyboard/trackpad from Kogan that looks closer to the mini-Bluetooth one in the 2nd post, and that works fine with my usb2Go adaptor and the Note. I know both look similar, but the button configuration under the trackpad on mine is the same as the Bluetooth one.
I like the idea of the bluetooth one mind you!

Dave

Thanks for that info, very useful. I'm considering getting one, can you advise where you got yours (a link would be great, if not, a manufacturer name and/or part number would do ... worst case can you advise approx price & dimensions?)
Although I have a USB one I bought from Kogan, this thread made me aware that there were now bluetooth ones too, so I've just ordered this one from Ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rii-Mini-i6-Bluetooth-IR-Keyboard-Touchpad-2-1-UK-Latest-Version-2011-/250901297139?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_KeyboardsMice&hash=item3a6ae1f7f3#ht_2215wt_905
It seems to be a slightly later design/model than the one shown in the 2nd post here, but you can find that too if you search ebay with the term "mini bluetooth keyboard rii".
Regards,
Dave
looks good - the universal learning IR remote is a nice add-on too. Let us know how it performs when you get it ...
meantime, I see you've got a wireless USB k/b already working via USB OTG. I'm awaiting my OTG adaptor so I can try that out with my existing (compact, but not mini) wireless k/b with optical trackball. Not sure how much current the Note can supply for OTG usage but I guess I can just use a powered hub if required?

[Q] USB Keyboard not detected (micro USB)

Hi,
I had a new case and keyboard arrive for my nexus today but the keyboard doesn't seem to be detecting at all. I've been browsing all evening trying to find a fix but to no avail so far...
These are the specifics;
Nexus 7 wifi 32gb stock rom, JB 4.2.1
This exact MINI USB Keyboard (Can't identify manufacturer as the keyboard is built in to the case)
Mini usb - micro usb connector
I have verified the usb connector is working fine as I am able to plug in a mini usb charger to the nexus through it and it charges fine.
When I plug in the keyboard it doesn't work or seem to be detected in any way.
Where am I going wrong?
I can't try a USB OTG cable as I am not connecting a full size USB peripheral. I installed usb host diagnostics and ran it with the keyboard connected but I'm not sure how to interpret the results which are as follows;

Additional info;
I added a 51-android.rules file as per the process in this thread, and included ALL manufacturers and ID codes but still no fix
You *do* need an OTG cable. It has two pins (4 and 5) connected. That's what tells the tablet that it's in host mode. If you want to adapt yours, here's the procedure (obviously, use at your own risk!):
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...iy-making-your-own-otg-cable-image-heavy.html
tjupille is correct, a normal micro USB cable will only have 4 pins connected, the 5th pin needs to be grounded on the tablet side of the cable. If you can find/make a such a cable and if it's a standard USB HID keyboard then it should work out of the box on a stock N7 without the need for any special configuration.
I have also seen where some non-stock ROMs lose the OTG support. This wouldn't be your case as you are running what looks to be a stock ROM. Now then, I have had a few OTG cables go bad. Some of them are just made cheaply.
Thanks all, I understand the otg cable setup much better now. I figured that with a standard connection android should see the device as an input device and it would just work. Have a cable on order now. I have the kit to mod my existing adapter but for such a small amount of money I'd rather not gamble frying my nexus. Look forward to when it arrives as I keep going to use the hard keys!

dealextreme has some otg cables, you can purchase it.
A # of eBay stores carry these Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable, originally designed for the Samsung Galaxry devices - I got one as a bundle along with the swivel case & screen protector, etc. Inexpensive & it works - on 4.1.2 and on 4.2.1 depending on the rom & kernel.
One of them selling a pair for under $5, free shipping and they are based in the LAX area of CA, mine arrived in less than a week - vendor has been around for years and sourced them mostly from oversea. The short piece of connecting cable is a bit longer than picture but still fit flat & tight against the bottom/side of the N7 with the case, so it won't be too bad flying 6 or 10+ hours with my own huge library collection of DVD's on a stick. Not a vendor / product endorsement & plenty of sources to get yours, plus Amazon ...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Micro-US...338153?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item56517d1069
Mine was quite difficult to find as it's a micro one end and mini the other, but I've located one and it's ordered. Thanks for the links guys. I'm in the uk, it seems to be particularly difficult to find the one I need here for some reason!
Just my $0.02 on the whole OTG thing though.... why can't it be that simple to just connect a usb device and for it to work like things used to?? Why the need for an adapter? Surely these keyboard cases should all be OTG wired for maximum compatibility as a keyboard is never going to be a host device!
Ho hum...
Then if i understand good i need otg cable to be able to connect my keyboard ! The problem is my keyboard is already micro usb and i just find
OTG micro usb to usb 2.0 .
How to do then ?
Well I'm glad I found this thread after a couple of hours of fruitless searching (& mostly getting stuff about flash drives).
I tried to connect a case logic mini usb keyboard which I acquired for the princely sum of ten bucks, by using the cable that shipped with the Nexus and a usb gender changer, but the tablet did not recognize the device. I've had no trouble hooking the tablet up to a pc for chrome debugging, file xfers etc, and I tested the mini kb on a couple of pcs.
I thought it was something like this OTG adaptor thing, but couldn't figure out what was special about it vs. bog-standard usb plugs. I ordered one along with a powered usb hub, in case that was the/another issue, and look forward to getting this thing to work.
Thanks!
Edit: Sweet! The OTG adaptor worked like a charm, and with a powered hub I can run a wireless mini-mouse too.
Hi guys, I know this thread is quite old, but I have very, very important problem:
I've recently bought the same built-in to case keyboard with two wires: micro and mini.
The problem is that the micro one connected to the Nook Tablet or HTC Sensation does not work (although in case of HTC Sensation it is detected!).
When I connect the same keyboard to my sister's no-name tablet (something-made-in-China) via miniUSB it works like a charm! With no adapters, nothing!
The question is: should I try to find OTG adapter (and if yes, then which one? miniUSB to microUSB, or rather microUSB to microUSB?) ?
Thanks in advance for all your replies...

OTG for the nexus 7 is a bit different in terms of hardware requirements. Pins 4 and 5 on the micro USB side have to be shorted together for it to work. You will likely need an OTG cable that says in the description that it is compatible with the Nexus 7. Amazon and eBay are decent places to go.

I think all Xperia phones can use all usb and hdmi otg.
I tested official Samsung usb otg on XZ and it worked.
Now I have all in one otg (usb, sd, micro sd) and it work fine.
I think only Samsung ban 3rd party otg, as they want customers to buy their official one.

Agree:
Cheapest no name card reader with very old sd card - no problem.
Tried 3 usb sticks - no problem (sry, I don't have them with me atm, so don't know which products)
So it might be more interesting, if there ist anything NOT working/compatible?
What about portable hard drives? And how about the ones with external power source.I couldn't get these to work on Xperia S.

I tried my 2.5 '' HDs without success, cause HDs need too much power to start:
- Buffalo Mini Station HD-PNTU3 (1 TB)
- Toshiba MQ01ABD100 (1 TB, DC +5V, 1,0A) inside Sharkoon Quickstore Portable USB 3.0
- Intenso Memory2Move via USB
Btw - I'm arfraid a HD would drain too much batterie from XZ?
Maybe portable hard drives work with active hub?
Didn't try this yet.
Ooff topic:
Intenso Memory2Move - connects via Wifi and works great.
Same does e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite, but this german product Intenso is half price (below 100 €).
But this has nothing to do with USB OTG

I can read micro sd cards using a usb adapter that does not work with my Xperia S, complaining that too much power was needed.
Sent from my Xperia Z
Works with my A4tech 2.4 GHz wireless keyboard and mouse combo. Nice!
What would even be nicer is if I can do that with Xperia Z connected to my HDTV via MHL Link and I can still use the USB for my Keyboard/Mouse. I don't have an MHL A/V Link yet. So anybody can confirm If the USB on the MHL link can be made into a host?

You could use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse
iBasso D-Zero USB/DAC
Tried my iBasso D-Zero USB/DAC/Amp with the ZX Walkman app (via USB OTG cable).
FLAC (96Khz/24Bit or lower) and MP3 on my sennheiser hd25-1 II (and a few other) headphones sound quality is too thing and I have a lot of snap crackle and pops, really not very pleasant. Not sure if this is result of the DAC in the iBasso?

Tried my Fiio ANDES-E07K USB/DAC/Amp with the ZX Walkman app (via USB OTG cable).
FLAC (96Khz/24Bit or lower) and MP3 on my sennheiser hd25-1 II (and a few other) headphones sound quality is pleasant with nice bass and "cleaner" sound, can't put my finger on it, but still not a great sound.

Does anyone know if OTG + power works with a Y-cable on the stock kernel?

USB OTG

Has anyone been able to get USB OTG to work at all?
I tried using a mouse, keyboard, and usb stick and none of them seem to work on the nexus 6p (they work fine on the nexus 7 though).
Yes mine works.

Is there any option you have to enable somewhere? It doesn't even seem to be providing power (I have a few adapters with tiny leds that light up when they plug in and I'm not getting anything).
Also do you have a link to the cable you're using?
First I use stickmount app since I am rooted. I know of no other setting.

Does anybody know if it can do USB Audio out while also charging? I want to use my Fiio DAC via USB OTG so i can plug into my car audio like i did on my Nexus 7.

I have tested it with a few different USB drives using a Type A to Type C cable i found on amazon. I am able to copy files back and forth between the the phone to the drive. I have to use the built in file manager to do this though (Settings>Storage & USB). The drive is not showing up in any file manager i try from the play store.
I have not tried a mouse or keyboard.
Edit: Tried usb mouse. Works fine. Didn't have to change any settings. USB is set to MTP under Dev Options.
Can I connect my DSLR directly with a Type C to Micro B (3.1) Cable? In the past, I always used a OTG Micro B to Type A (Female) and then a Type A to Micro B (3.1) cable.
When I first unboxed my 6P, I connected it to my laptop to transfer music and the storage did not show. Had to change USB setting and then it popped up.

OP did you ever get yours working?
nkornbau, is your 6P rooted? Mine is not rooted (yet), and I can use the internal explorer to see flash drive files via OTG, and I can even display jpgs from there. However, I cannot get the internal explorer to copy and paste files. It gives me a message "Unfortunately, Documents has stopped working."

Oh I remember your username from head-fi.
And btw, while external amp+dac's would work for others, it didn't for me... so...

Strange, working without a hitch here. UAPP/Hiby needed if you're bothered by Android molesting the bitrate, but works with all apps.

My HRT MicroStreamer jumps right to 96k, works with all apps natively. Unfortunately it also drains the battery so I'm looking for a small self-powered option that will do same. Unfortunately it's a bit confusing to suss out what will really work natively without UAPP, etc.
I really dislike the fact that USB OTG forces using the internal file explorer. This would be a great feature to add in custom ROMs, the ability to allow 3rd party apps to access external storage. Google is really pushing those high GB internal storage and cloud sales. Very sad. In fact, the only thing that really stands out as great about this phone compared to my G4 is that I can unlock the bootloader and play around with custom stuff. Other than that, the G4 is way more feature rich.

You can use whatever file explorer you like. External storage shows up for me in Solid Explorer.
Regards which usb DACs work, unfortunately this remains a bit of a roll the dice scenario. The USB audio thread I opened at Head-Fi in the portable sources forum remains the best source there.
Works with mine: I used a Belkin Type-C to Type-A usb adapter (this got 5 stars from Benson Leung, by the way). The built-in file explorer works fine reading its contents and I can also use Nexus Media Importer to access/manage files/play movies/aduio from a USB thumb drive. FYI, if the OTG plugin for Solid Explorer doesn't appear to work, there are a few more steps to be done such as granting access after selecting the your removable USB storage from the built-in file explorer.
You need this Meenova Type-C to MicroUSB OTG cable works will for DAC on Type-C phone.

this adapter seems to work with my MicroUSB flash drives

now I can't seem to flash ROMs from OTG in TWRP, though...I think I've only sucessfully flashed BrokenOS from OTG. Everything else flashes if flashed from internal storage. I like to flash from OTG because I occasionally like to wipe internal storage once a month (when I was on the OPO)

Hi, we you able to connect your dslr to your 6p through a usb otg? I can't, and i don't know why. No USB storage works for me with the otg cable and i can't connect to my dslr. I've also received a replacement otg cable from Fosmon because i thought the first one was faulty, but no luck.
Never used to be a problem with my previous Nexus devices.
