FIRST OnePlus 5T camera review by heise.de! - OnePlus 5T Guides, News, & Discussion

https://m.heise.de/ct/artikel/OnePlus-5T-Keine-Zoom-Kamera-mehr-3887487.html
Heise.de is one very serious german tech site and they say that since other sites already broke the NDA they dont feel obliged to hold information back.
To make it short: camera does not get better, low light performance gets even worse.
Long version: The camera setup (still WITHOUT OIS!) will be 16+20 mp again BUT the 20 mp sensor this time won't work as telephoto lens. Also aperture changes from f/2.6 to also f/1.7 like the 16 mp main snapper. Pixel size of the 20 mp sensor stays at 1.0 um. This sensor will, despite its crazily small pixel size, automatically work as low light shooter when light levels drop below 3.5 lux, making pictures look even worse than with the 16 mp sensor.
The Software does NOT use both sensors to combine the picture information like it is the case for other phones. Thus, picture quality does not seem to improve compared to the OP 5.
My comment: This really doesnt seem to make any sense. Why not put in a sensor with bigger pixels if you want a lowlight specific unit? Why take one with even smaller pixels? Wtf!? Did they have too many of those crappy 20mp sensor left over? Or why not at least use both sensors to combine the two die pics? Or why not just use the fabulous sensor that the s8/pixel2 uses and put an OIS in it? This is so stupid oneplus, i just dont get it..
Furthermore: Usb will again be 2.0.
2015 all over again..
What do you think?

This is OP5 forum, there is a OP5T forum.

Sorry, didnt see there was a 5t forum already. I posted it there, pls delete this thread, thx.

Camera Question

Ive read in the research that the S4 takes beautiful pictures, but that a challenge for more casual "snapshot" usage is that it blurs pretty easily if not held very steady.
I use my phone camera mostly for things like whipping out my phone and snapping a quick pic of the kids running around, or a friend skiing by over a jump, etc.
So while I know the PQ is awesome on the S4, Im worried that maybe for my needs the camera wont be great as it may not be well suited to snapping those pictures in situations where you dont have time to really position yourself, be still, frame the pic, etc.
Can anyone share with me whether this has been your experience?

I also own a high-end full frame camera, but have been amazed by the S4 camera. I certainly would not say that it "blurs pretty easily if not held very steady." S4 pictures are sharper than the iphone 5 or galaxy s3, both of which I used at lot.
That said, if your primary concern is minimizing blur from fast moving objects, you might be better off with the HTC One, especially if pics are taken in low light. I say that not having tried the HTC, but just based on its specs.
If you are you are taking pictures of the kids running around or someone skiing, whether or not you are holding the camera steady doesn't matter that much. The motion of the subject will outweigh camera shake (unless you have very shaky hands). For minimizing the blur from moving objects you want a fast lens and sensor with low noise at high ISO. The specs of the HTC One camera are better in both those respects.
If your concern is motion blur from the camera itself shaking (but again, this is typically not a consideration when taking pictures of fast moving objects), the HTC One has optical image stabilization which reduces motion blur from camera shake. The S4 does not have this.
One camera is better in low light (bigger pixels, OIS) than GS4, but 4MP is usually a dealbreaker for the average joe. Overall i think the One has a better camera than the S4 (which is WAY oversharpened and oversaturated). I actually like the flatter images out of the iPhone 5, but i dont use my phone as a camera unless its a random shot and i dont have a real camera with me.
Typically i shoot Nikon D4 and GF shoots Canon 5D Mk III, but for parties or random stuff, cell pic is ok.
What I found is that you either need to switch to sports mode or lower the exposure to -1.5. This essentially raised the shutter to 1/30 instead of 1/15 which is way too slow.
The annoying part is that the camera doesn't retain the settings...

The one is oversharpened. Its 4 megapixels the s4 tends to look sharp until you zoom it in on the phone because of so many pixels crammed in. Please know what you're saying before you go out and say it. I also do photography but that isn't relevant to this

Let me reiterate, One, I wasn't talking to you I was talking to the poster below you. And also what I stated was that the HTC One has 4 ultrapixels and such so it tends to let in more light because less pixels mean bigger pixels in the same size sensor, so more light can be let in. As well as a wider aperture that the One has over the S4.
The pictures are good in low light but in normal lighting conditions the HTC one is extremely oversharpened to compensate for the low quality the images it produces. The images aren't bad because it's 4 megapixels it's just bad because the software and optics are subpar in anything but low light.
The S4 uses a sensor even superior to the iPhone 5. Look at gsmareana for comparisons.
The HTC one got a 6 overall, the iPhone 5 an 8 and the Galaxy S4 a 9.

Camera sensor question

Alright, so it's known that the sensor used in the N6P is the Sony IMX377. However, does anyone know if this sensor is native 16:9? 12.3mp is already pretty damn low for a "flagship" phone now-a-days, so it would kind of suck to have to go down to 9.6mp to shoot in a 16:9 aspect ratio.
I quickly googled the sensor and there are a couple of datasheets, I am no camera lens technical expert but it looks like 12.3MP is 4:3.

Damn. I have to say, that's disappointing...
Yeah, it's 9.6mp in 16:9.
I like 4:3 MUCH better for photos, anyway.
Same, 4:3 is better
Me too...
4:3 crop sensors are fsr more common than full frame 16:9 ones. I like the 4:3 shots better anyway
I agree it is very disappointing. I don't like 4:3 photos at all and I'm use to DSLRs with 16:9 photos.

Are you sure you need all that resolution? Even at 9.6 MP that's more information than could be displayed on a 4K television screen.
Keep in mind that although the IMX377 is not as high resolution sensor as some of the 16 MP and 20 MP sensors seen these days, it is a very large 1/2.3 sensor (large for a phone). So it is actually physically the largest sensor that's been put in any flagship, except the Xperia Zx phones and the great Nokia phones (like the 808, 1020, N8 that have sensors which remain years beyond anyone, even though they are no longer new phones).
So the reason the 6P has "only" 12.3 MP is not because it is a "low" or "small" sensor. It's a very large sensor (again, for a phone). But instead of using the extra size for more pixels, which is a waste for almost all purposes, they use the extra size for larger pixels. This means the images should have better color accuracy (lack of reviews of the phone proving this, notwithstanding), because the larger pixels can catch more light. The overall larger sensor also improves low light performance and noise.
Even the Z5, the only other phone with a 1/2.3 sensors, doesn't use it's full 23 MP to create unnecessarily enormous photos with details no one needs. Instead its default setting to to produce 8 MP images. The extra pixels are used to oversample, using many pixels to composite into one effectively larger pixel, for the advantages of color accuracy and lower noise. This is the "Pureview" technique pioneered by Nokia with the 808 and its huge 1/1.2 sensor, that's actually 41 MP, but defaults to "only" 5 MP final images.
So unless you have a very specialized need for more detail than the already massive amoung of detail of 9.6 MP or 12.3 MP (and assuming you even have a screen capable of displaying more than the 8 MP it takes to fll a 4K screen), the benefits of smaller images, with larger pixels, and a larger 1/2.3 sensor far outweigh pointless extra pixels that people get obsessed with but serves no purpose for most people. Remember, the megapixel race in phones and consumer cameras has always been a mistake, that produces a level of detail people don't need and can't see, that produces unnecessarily large file sizes, and that actually creates problems like reduced color accuracy and increased noise. Physical sensor size matters a lot, megapixels, beyond about 5 MP or 8 MP serve no purpose (unless you're creating billboards or printing wall sized photos).
*
One side note, if your current phone is the LG G4, as your signature suggests, I would not expect to get better images out of the 6P. The G4 has arguably the best camera in a current smartphone. It already has a pretty large 1/2.6 sensor. Even though it's pretty high resolution at 16 MP, apparently they've done something to really reduce the amount of noise you'd normally expect from a 16 MP sensor. And it has one very large advantage over the 6P, which is OIS (optical image stabilization). I'd really wait for reviews that compare the G4 camera to the 6P, if this is important to you. At best, I'd expect the 6P to be as good as the G4 (and it may not be), but I'd be surprised if it surpassed the G4 for still images. And without OIS, there's no way videos will be as stable on the 6P, whatever other merits it may have.
The Z5 have a pretty stable camera, one of the best in the market right now and it doesnt have OIS. So lets hope google will arrive with a better algorithm

Also, unlike the introductionary text of this forum suggests, battery will be the same as the OP5, 3300 mah. Thus, endurance will be lower compared to the 5.
And the device will also feature face recognition to unlock.
What do you think?
This is kinda disappointing. I was kinda missing my OnePlus 5 going to the pixel 2xl because I really loved the feel and everything on the o5. I was also thinking I should have waited on the 5t and hope they made some small improvements to the camera. This seems like a bit if a downgrade. Battery life will still be really good but slightly worse. I don't see why they couldn't have fitted in a slightly larger battery
Finally get to review it
Finally got my new glasses and can check all of the new great features With these phones. It has been a while since I bought a smart phoneBut the one plus is something that I there are just way too expensive.
I wonder if it possible cross-device ROMs between OnePlus 5 & 5T.

I think it will be possible. Since the changes are similar like 3 and 3t. Lets see
yeah, for me the missing ois is a deal breaker. I planned to upgrade from my op3t but now i will keep it. Hopefully they will learn from it and add a camera with ois for the 6
GSMArena have some shots in their hands-on here.
If you zoom in and look at what it's done to the foliage in the first 2 shots you might wish you hadn't. This would be considered poor in a low-light shot, never mind outdoor daylight. I just hope that this is pre-pre-production software that they stupidly gave to a reviewer and not what they are planning on selling.
Maybe anybody has a acutal review of the camera of the Oppo R11s?
It should have the same camera configuration and software "magic".
Results should be an indication for the possible camera performance of the OP5T.

Interesting. GSMarena comments on the lowlight pictures:
"We also went out for some night shots around the usual locations. We won't be passing any verdicts just yet, but the results look promising."
When they said the second camera would have f1.7 aperture (without probably mentioning the pixel size) I thought they would do something special to combine the result of both cameras and create nice pictures. I didn't expect that they only would use one of them....
OnePlus clearly doesn't know much about software photography, but they know a lot about marketing...

Well, the screen says 6.0 VS 5.5 But it's taller but thinner side to side. The total screen area should be the same or very close. I doubt enough to affect battery in any significant way. It's also a newer panel, so possibly more efficient than the old 5.5 which was a carryover from the previous OP.
The screen is not narrower but a lot longer so the real estate is quite bigger.
Its 136x68mm vs 122x68mm.
A few sites have mentioned the camera is a bit lackluster, but until we can get a good comparison between the 5 and 5T I'm not sure how to take these comments.

5T features ported??

Hi All,
It seems that the 5T has a low light shooting preference over telephoto and facial unlock.
Although the latter is not something I'd ever use, I was thinking would it be possible for the camera's on the 5 to use the low light functionality of the 5T? I've read that they're similar?
If not, it's not the end of the world, I've took some great pics with my 1+ but if I could improve low light then it'd be a bonus.
I believe the 5T has a different camera sensor.
If that's the case, it won't be portable unless you change the camera altogether.
The primary camera is the same, the difference is on the second camera. Now its nos a zoom len, it will work for low Light shoots because the sensor has a different aperture.
The 5 has de 1.6x len zoom, now on the 5T, all the zoom is digital
Enviado do meu ONEPLUS A5000 através de Tapatalk
Actually I think OP5 is doing the same thing (obviously with different second camera sensor) test yourself: open camera app, cover the main camera and obviously you will see just black, here is the weird thing: change to "zoom" (2x), cover the second camera (supposed zoom lens) you'll still have image then cover the main camera boom no image! So for 2x is just a digital zoom (a good one) from the main camera, and the second camera is just used for portrait mode effect
I think this is only in low light condition. Try this again in good light and it would work as expected
google cam with HDR+ will give you better low light shots
i took a picture of the night sky the other day and it actually turned out a beautiful picture. very surprised how well it judged exposure time.
We need to wait OxygenOS 4.7 to discover how many new features will arrive also in our OnePlus 5.

?? Oreo had nothing to do with what I've asked.?
I only need to know if the camera choice!! Low light over zoom can be transferred. In all honesty the second camera never works. Cover it an nothing happens.
In low light the second camera doesn't work, and it's better that way. With an f/2.6 aperture, it just wouldn't allow enough light in to the tiny sensor to be useful. This would be true even with the pixel binning technique the 5T uses for its secondary camera.
It's also entirely possible that there's hardware involved for that feature to work properly too.

Unbelievable bull crap from a senior member. This untrue.
Second lens activates in good looking lighting automatically, you covered the lens manually so it thinks it's dark and it will take the picture with main lens.
Best way to test is to test outside, I can visually see, how it's jumping from one lens to another when zooming. Also you can see whether it used the second lens from the photo details.
You don't need to be rude dude... Yes I'm senior member but I'm not a God that know how everything works, I just did that test and see that results, didn't know how this dual camera works. So I researched a bit and found what you said. My bad

Not likely since you have to have a lower aperture (1.7 or so) a Tele lens aperture is usually higher and allows less light to reach the sensor. With this, it is highly unlikely to have a software update that will allow the 5 to reproduce the 5T's low light photo quality.

Selfie quality

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the Xiaomi Poco F1 performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I've rated selfie cam average coz it's a mixed bag
In artificial lighting conditions it produces somewhat blurry images. In fact selfies in complete darkness with the screen flash look better than selfies in artificial lights such as tubelights, bulbs etc. Bokeh selfies are better with more details as compared to normal selfies.
I'm talking about selfies with 0 beautification.
I must admit that I'm coming from nexus 5 which has 1.2 mp front camera so maybe I was expecting a bit too much from the 20 mp cam of Poco f1!
Come to think of it, various hardware checking apps show front camera as 5 mp!
May be they are detecting secondary camera at the back as front camera...anyone knows any app that detects all 3 cameras (megapixel and sensor used) correctly??!
It is correct with 5mp. The Cam combines four Pixels top one Superpixel.
I thought it's detecting 5 mp is secondary back camera and mistaking it for front cam

So you mean the front camera is actually a 5 mp cam and it should be denoted as such in hardware info apps such as CPU X? This explains why the selfie quality wasn't much much better as I had expected. I'm not that impressed with this 4 pixel combining to form a Superpixel technology....at least in poor lighting conditions.
It would also mean that the secondary 5 mp camera at the back isn't mentioned in the information generated by such apps!
Shouldn't it be mentioned?
I hope I'm clear on this point.
Noticed nowadays new camera unable to capture sharp pic for grp selfie
Grp selfie is where u at front n few members at the back to ensure everyone fit it in the picture
But what happen is only ur pic is sharp while the rest quite blur
This not happened during single lens with fix focus like s7 or 2016 model
How to fix this ?
I must admit that the selfies come out blurry when taken indoors especially when taken with volume rocker. It shakes up due to the press of the button. Do you guys face that?

I see the phone uses a 20MP sensor from Samsung.
This not a real 20MP camera...I mean, it can't be! Or it's very, VERY bad, even in natural light conditions.
The quality of selfies is way inferior to the 12MP sensor of the back camera.
The amount of details captured by it makes it look more like a 5-8MP sensor...

You just need to turn off Beautiful Mode and increase sharpness on Options to make things more clear. It's one of the best selfie cameras that I ever see in my life. Get out of here you guys.
But there's a issue that Xiaomi need to fix. The camera dont focus acurately subjects at 1 meter from device. If you use Selfie Group Mode, the problem is gone.
The issue is with focus which is fixed at a distance of around 50cm. Beyond that, objects get blurred.
