LG OS support questions - LG G6 Questions and Answers

Hi. I am looking at buying a G6 but I want to kow a couple of things first.
Firstly, how quick are LG with deployment of security updates for non carrier non US phones?
Secondly, how many years does LG support a phones OS updates before ending it?

I can't give you exact values but I'm very disappointed with how LG is supporting their top phone. We have that Blueborne bluetooth issue for like 2 months, google has already released a patch, but LG G6 is still stuck on 10T rom.
G6 looks great, it feels great, but my next phone (or maybe I will sell this one earlier) will be a Pixel or Oneplus. The closer to stock - the better for you.

I totally agree. I am disappointed too because battery drain, OS version, security patch, etc etc. It is a beautiful device but my next phone will be a Pixel, OP or Xiaomi. I think I'll never buy another LG in the future.

I think it's not only LG. I guess Samsung and other "top" companies do the same. They release a beautiful phone that is really tempting to get but then you are left with an outdated software. They don't really care about existing customers.

Up until a few years ago, Samsung used to abandon the devices themselves by releasing a few upgrades, even problematic.
Recently, the situation seems to have changed with faster releases of the security patches even for older devices. LG instead continues not to shine. Unfortunately!

That isn't official. Official is from LG directly.
This is so far away from official like seeing flying pigs.. Could be true or not.

Just think about it. Do you really think that LG will say officaly: "NO NOUGAT UPDATE FOR OUR 1.5 YEARS OLD PHONE". It would be a really good advertisement for them! Lets be critical. It's the same like if they said: Buy our current flagship - G6 and you will get terrible support, bad build quality, bootloop problem after a year, you will loose all your date when we change phones motherboard, you will wait many days and finally you will probably stuck on 7.1.1 forever. It's almost on 100% that LG G4 won't get Nougat update. All what they need is to sell new models. That is what keeps them alive. Building a new system for almost 2 years old phone is nonsense, it is, it cost money. We need to earn money, not spend money. If you want Nougat, buy LG G5 or get G6. Thats it. But many people will buy from another phone manofacturer next time after this. LG is digging it's own grave for a long time.
We barely started March dude... If you had any Asus you'd see what's slow. Just wait and if they don't deliver too bad. The phone is not that bad as it is since it's a terrible chip
Wow LG seems like they really don't like the G4 considering they are leaving it on the same Android version as it's predecessor G3. I bought this phone as a budget alternative to buying the galaxy A5 2016 .... At least the LG G4 has good custom ROM support so I'll just install lineage os if LG really decides to ditch this phone. But I'm still disappointed to see this phone only get one update in its lifetime.
Edit : *only one major update
Also: even comparing LG to other companies like Sony... Their whole z5 series including z5, premium and compact just got the 7.0 update

Until it's not from official LG sources, readable on their homepage or blog, i would say it's not official. It's just guessing...
Official??? you are crazy
https://support.t-mobile.com/community/phones-tablets-devices/software-updates#tmoSUPDocTitle
LG V10 is already confirmed by T-mobile.
About the LG G4, no official info ... do not believe in support that often does not have communication with the development team

So you're going to trust a carrier over the manufacturer?
The official line seems to be that the Nougat update for the G4 and V10 was abandoned as it wasn't stable enough for release. If you choose to believe any other source then I'm afraid you're set to be disappointed.
It's time to move on.
i imagine this on a balance.. one side how much they would spent on 7.0 development vs the other people moving away from LG.
what a re you toughts do they loose more money at developing a g4 that should be able to handle 7.0 asn the nexus 5x has nougat.
or all the people that will get angry and dissapointed. as we still in the 2 year update cycle.??
Let's make dozens of topics with the same posts. It is not over until the fat lady sings. Let's suffocate this topic, LG deserves it. Wait, only users that actually look for useful information will find it difficult with all these topics. Just my 2 (euro) cents.

I`m so sick of LG`s ****:
My LG G2 display not responding so I got LG G4 instead of buying a new display for LG G2
My LG G4 problems:
1. the BOOTLOOP
2. display burn in (ghosting)
3. battery after 10% phone dies
4. mobile data on and no signal = phone goes crazy touches all over the screen
5. the plastic back falls
6. and now no update for Nougat? wtf. LG?
The LG G6? I love it but after my history whit LG i`m so so so disappointed
sorry for the unorthodox words....
I must say I don't care much about 7.0/7.1. The g4 is working perfectly for me. What killer features would 7 bring? The upgrade to 6 did not bring many noticable improvements imho.

Shall we make a petition??? I dont know will it work or not.
The same thing also happened with my previous phone Xperia SP where they promised kitkat update but later abandoned it. So we (Xperia SP members) filled a petition but unfortunately I didnt change anything.
it looks like a prank to me. Of course you will all bite.
a new xda member just made his 1st post and its about lg never update to nougat ? lmao....
i could do the same anytime just as a prank. pranks exist because people that like pranks exist.

How good is LG keeping up with the Android releases and how often does it update UX?

I have been a HTC lover for almost sever years (Desire HD --> ONE X --> M7 --> M9) and I've decided to go for my next phone. Although the U11 looks like an impressive phone, I'm still a bit hesitant to go for it. Next to G6 and S8, the U11 sure looks like an ancient phone (I'm not a big fan of shinny backs and the front view of the phone looks awful in my opinion).
Not a samsung admirer hence I would like to give the G6 a try, but my only worry is how much is LG dedicated towards releasing the android updates. I didn't have troubles with HTC and I am sure Samsung will take care of this too but not I'd like to know how much is LG committed towards this. I do like the vanilla android but I don't feel like getting into the rooting business anymore (I'm too old for that and can't keep up), so I'd be heavily relying on LG OTA updates. Also I hear that LG UX has immensely improved, but would like to know if you guys think that LG will keep updating it's own UX.
Thoughts and comments are welcome, as I'd be ordering my new phone today.
Just got the G6 a few weeks ago, and as a first time LG owner I was wondering the same, I'm sure others will give more informed opinions but from what I've read LG are quite good at keeping us up to date, I've had a UX and a patch update since I got the phone which is promising.

Only been using a V20 for almost 3 weeks and from what I've read here and the V20 forum I believe LG aren't quick, or even regular, with updates.
But maybe you've left it a bit late to be asking, hope you get more replies soon.
Edit: two conflicting replies already
I am probably going to answer my own question but surprisingly LG got the first Nougat update compared to all other phones out there. Source - http://www.androidauthority.com/android-oem-update-speed-743073/
Here there are, more ore less, the major updates received by the G-Series starting from the G2:
- G2: 4.4.2, 5.0.2
- G3: 5.0, 6.0
- G4: 6.0
- G5: 7.0
LG is pretty fast to release major updates, but it isn't for security patches.

The V20 was the first phone to be released with Nougat 7 out-of-the-box.
Not a lot has happened since then.
In my experience, LG has been quick with their updates. I believe my Sprint G5 was one of the first to get the Nougat update.
LG is usually first to update to newest Android versions (except Google's own phones offcorse).
G3 was the first OEM phone to get Lollipop update, G5 was first to get Nougat,...
We may not get the 7.1 update but I'm pretty sure they'll skip it because we'll be the first ones to get Android O (minus Google's phones).
I've had this phone for almost 2 weeks now and allready got 1 UX and 2 system updates so... They're really fast.
Really does depend? My G4 is fine for updates my G5 was more miss than hit!

Petition for Android 7 G4 H815

Hello,
Don't know if it is still necessary but.. A petition for an upgrade of android 7 to our G4 H815 International version.
Android 7 came out during the 2 years of maintenance of the G4.. so... LG HAS the obligation to roll out this version to every G4 version.

I'm not trying to hate but... I've never experienced that a manufacturer took a petition for a software update/upgrade serious in any way. I've seen more than just a couple of those kind of petitions. It's pointless, it won't change anything even if it get's signed a thousand times.
Just install the "beta" version of Nougat. I've had it for over a month now and haven't noticed any setbacks. Well, other than a little screen burn, but I'm not sure if it's the Nougat or phone that's getting old. No random restarts, no FCs, nothing...Just smooth sailing. LG is not known for its good software support, so I wouldn't hold my breath about official Nougat anymore. I guess that ship has already sailed.

I've LG G4 H818P. There is a high risk of root and unlocking the device due to the warranty on the device. Especially when it comes to a device such as the LG G4 that is largely prone to bootloop.

Well, the bad thing about this beta is that it is vulnerable to the recent exploits in Android as the security patch of this rom is from June 2017. So it is vulnerable to Blueborne bluetooth exploit and KRACK wifi exploit.

By not buying LG again? Okay, so which manufacturer will give you updates for a long period of time?
Maybe if some company would officially support Lineageos on their device.

I haven't said that. I just meant to say that if the next wave of LG "flagships" have poor sales, maybe they will eventually do something about it.
Maybe they improve on their support, or on their quality control, I don't know.
In the short run, they will probably just ignore os.
But in the long run, if the sales figures go down and the number of support calls and/or device recalls go up maybe, just maybe, they will do something about it.
Who knows, maybe I will buy another LG product/phone if the quality and support of their devices will improve. But as it now stands, they are going down fast.
The latest sales figures already posted here are self explanatory.
LG is a bad smartphone manufacturer - majority of their recent phones have been plagued with issues (some serious some not so much)
no point in petitions cause they will ignore them, and even if they don't and actually release Android 7.0 for G4, thats still a year old OS which LG will leave at version 7.0..
just buy a smartphone that is easy to root (oneplus 5?) and go with lineage OS or something similar that gets updated on a daily basis
LG is **** tier and both their hardware and software suck

I agree for the version, but not for root.
I tried with my nexus 4, I scre** it up. totally. And reading articles telling you that you have a lot of manipulations to root etc, no thanks... Except if you have a software that you install normally and boum... rooted.
I will see if the V30 will be released with oreo version. Which i doubt....

LG Freaking Pathetic

I would never have believe a company the size of LG would let their smartphone business become so pathetic. My backup phone is an Essential PH-1 which is now two years old, first released May '17, and as of this AM I'm rocking Q Beta3 on a TWO YEAR old phone while LG hasn't even managed to get a supposed FLAGSHIP device (v35), released May '18, to Android Pie.
Who the F******* is running LG????????????????????????????????? What a joke!!!!!!!!!!!
Just unlock the bootloader and let the XDA community handle your business LG 'cause you obviously can't.
lg sucks butt

LG does make great phones -- great hardware, great features. The V30+ (128GB internal memory) especially was the best phone of 2017... They are just terrible at Android OS updates.
On the V30, they HAVE to give Android security updates at least every 3 months for 3 years. And they have pretty much done that.
And they HAVE to give all V30 variants PIE (also in the same agreement), but there was no date requirements on THAT.
V35 didn't have those promises in writing like the V30 did...

Oxygen OS updates

When I was considering buying a Oneplus 1+8 pro I was being told by YT influencers and media that if you like clean and good OS with frequent updates and longterm support that Oneplus is the way to go.
It has now been over 4 months since last update and AFAIK nothing is happening on that matter.
We have OB2 which is nowhere near being ready for daily driver. Even when it is released as stable I bet it will be even worse as what the current 10 is.
We have updates coming out for the 7 and Nord series but nothing for the 8.
If somebody wants to claim that there is nothing to update I will call them idiots. This OS is nowhere near to the level of the OSs I had on my previous Samsung and Apple phones. There are all sorts of issues which are not being addresed by Oneplus.
Am I the only one having a problem with that fact?

1st - OB2 is like 3 weeks old, not 4 months. Hope you don't expect Stable A11 days after Pixels.
2nd - if you believe YT influencers, then I wish you good luck.
3rd - security updates are spot on.
4th - I use OB2 since the release day and have no complains. Eventually high battery use of Google Play Store app. Nothing crazy.
]1st - I was referring to stable A10. Latest update was released Aug 15, 2020. So not 4 months but 2. Still long time ago.
2nd -I cannot establish my own opinion since I have no chance to see these phones in person before purchase. Also this is nowadays normal and best way to buy stuff.
3rd - No they are not. The latest stable version is on August security patch. We are now in the middle of October. Even Samsung is pushing that as we speak.
4th - I use my phone for work so no I will not run beta SW on it.
Samsung are better with security updates, but oneplus will get android 11 first
No complaints with 8 Pro updates this year...

First off. Don't listen to YouTubers, and influencers, I think I would poke someone in the eye of they told me that's what they did for a job..
OnePlus absolutely smashes the other OEM's in regards to updates, Huawei, old HTC, Sammy, LG, Sony, sorry but none of them come close .
Pixel? Sure that's the source, but the shortcomings Vs pixel on the OnePlus, it makes up for with a bigger battery and IMHO a better Dev community and a course matched beta program.
You can't go wrong with OnePlus tbh.

Based on this report your claims have no foundations to stand on. Oneplus released 12 updates since the phone launched but most of them were minor updates and fixed nothing. Only one major update. I would not classify that in the "smashing other OEMs" category.

12 updates in 6 months is pretty good stats. Small or not. I have had all other brands and came back to OnePlus (I had the 6T as well). Even stock, it is a great OS. But, everyone has their own opinion.

No foundations? Perhaps the fact that OnePlus actually release stable OS' in a timely manner with very little need to change anything, OOS is an extremely stable and fast skin for Android..very light too.
Security update comes out OnePlus gets it... new OS in development, we get it early.....to what OEM are you referring?
Huawei does not offer this speed nor does it offer a beta program like this, Samsung didn't either if memory serves, Sony was pitiful and splintered (as was Huawei (due to device variants /regions) LG (do people still buy these types of phones? Motorola (budget phone not in the same league)
I've had a lot of phones so I have some experience here, this is a public forum, you can take my advice or you can move on, what I won't do is try to convince you against something you appear to have an agenda towards, personally I can say without prejudice or bias that the OnePlus 8 pro is the best phone on the market right now, very few people would argue that point.
Updates are on point, end of story.
A good OEM won't release huge updates because they have nothing to fix, meaning it was done right the first time, a bad OEM will do the opposite, like Samsung releasing a £1500 phone with a camera that won't focus.
Oh wow just saw your end of post, you compared an android device to apple.
Oh dear.
Tell me can you Bluetooth files yet? Is apple still crippling it's OS due to an "update" ?
Don't compare any android device to apple you'll get very little sympathy here in that regard.
Samsung? Really? Exynos processor in the non US variants? And you're supporting them? Anyone who likes android or has an ounce of respect for themselves would boycott them and sign the petition to get Snapdragon in all their phones..
I wouldn't swap my OnePlus if you offered me both the iPhone XS and the ultra.
Lastly I and the absolute vast majority of people have not and do not have any issue with our OnePlus phone.
Fastest phone out not.
Battery life? I get 10 hours SOT consistently, even when gaming.
What issues are you referring to? If it's green tint (see above)
