[Q] install Windows 7 on TF101

Before all the hardcore Android fans start swearing at me for asking this question.... there is a reason for asking it.
As the title explains...... has anyone been able to install Windows 7 on the TF101 (aka Transformer) ?
I've read a couple of articles online that the tablet was suppose to come with Windows 7 on it, which would mean that somewhere, someone at Asus has already done it.
Any of the developers on here know how to install Windows 7 on the TF101 ?

Well, I am a Windows guy and I would love to have it running in the Decepticon but as far as I know there is no Tegra version of Windows 7.
You will have to wait for Windows 8.
It would be cool to have VMWare for Android.
I read here somewhere that there might be a problem with drivers. I would like to see that too!

Yeah its an issue with the CPU type, its the same reason you couldn't virtualize or install windows on Macs before they changed to an x86 architecture. Windows 8 is the first one designed to run both on x86 and ARM processors, its much deeper than drivers though, even the applications will have to behave differently.

Just a matter of finding out how it was done.
Since the TF101 uses a Tegra 2 processor (not an Intel CULV as some early press reports stated), and Windows 7 does not support the Tegra 2 architecture, unfortunately installing Windows 7 on it is not possible.
Windows 8 will have ARM support, so there'll be a chance that works...

forgive me for being dumb...... but check the date release on those articles. They are only 2 weeks old. I dont think it would be humanly possible to swap out the chipset, redesign the boards architecture and have it fully released in stores in just 1 week. These guys must have gotten their info from somewhere.

Its not a matter of switching the chip set and redesigning it. Those articles are just plain wrong and off base. It seems like they were just speculating based on other similar tablets being released at the time. The TF101 has an the Tegra 2 which is clearly a fact. All these articles mention completely different hardware. One of them even mentions a core i5.
It is not possible with the hardware that is in the tablet to run any current version of Windows. I promise there is not a TF101 somewhere running Windows 7, even internally at ASUS.

Someone, somewhere, made a mistake and others ran with the story.
Apparently reading comprehension is low here or many of you didn't actually read the article attached and just assumed by looking at the pictures.
1. Pictures are not of the TF101, look at the placement of the mini HDMI vs the headphone jack. This is obviously a different model
2. CPU is claimed to be an Intel CULV model not a nVidia SOC of any kind.
3. As previously stated there is no current Windows desktop version that will run on any type of ARM device, so the current TF won't/can't run windows.
4. Just because the headline is dated two months ago doesn't mean there is a working version, there seems to be just enough to send to the FCC for certification.
5. Most likely a pre-production tablet used for testing and/or development, so yes they can swap internal parts and test to their hearts content.
Just because we may wish it to be true doesn't make it so.
If you really want an Asus tablet running Windows they already have the ASUS Eee Pad (Eee Slate) EP121-1A011M Intel Core i5.

woops... i meant 2 months. (fingers ran away from me..my bad)
...still, that isn't a lot of time to completely redesign tablet architecture.
But, given the benefit of the doubt....what are the chances of even dual booting the WP7, WM6.5 or even the Windows 8 Beta version on these tablets ?
Heck, they were able to install Windows 98 on the HD2. I hadn't done it personally, but saw a thread on how to make it happen.

It's clearly a preproduction model - you can see that it's running a 2.x version of Android from the icons in the top notification bar!

They didn't redesign the tablet - the article(s) are all wrong. Occams razor!

Unless we get a version of NVFlash that works with the Transformer, zero.
Even with a version of NVFlash that works with the Transformer, the chances are pretty close to zero without access to source.
Heck, they were able to install Windows 98 on the HD2. I hadn't done it personally, but saw a thread on how to make it happen.

Why is this thread even here?
Maybe it's cocky of me to even ask, but I find it hard to believe that people in the dev section don't understand that Windows is currently x86 and not ARM. It's been that way forever. You'll never get Windows on an Android tablet until x86 versions of Android become commonplace.
Speculation is that Windows 8 will support ARM but I'm extremely skeptical. It makes no sense. ARM versions of windows wouldn't be able to run x86 executables unless there's some sort of emulation layer, and the performance would be horrible. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft shelves that feature before Windows 8 is released.
I'm hopeful we'll see native Ubuntu on ARM, but even then, who cares. I mean, we're expecting all this from a $399 tablet here. We splurged on this expensive toy; if we can spend that on a toy, we can buy a cheap laptop/netbook and throw or OS(es) of choice on it.

It's definitely NOT possible as others have already stated in this thread. Windows does not currently run on the ARM CPU architecture at all. People have gotten older versions of windows working, only Windows 3.1 and early afaik but they did so through a DOS emulator that you launch from within Android and the performance is supposed to be ****ty.
When Windows 8 comes out, that is said to have an ARM compatible version that we might be able to install, but that's not going to be for a while.

5000 of the attendees of the BUILD conference were given Sammy Tablets with Windows 8. This is most likely the only public source of the ARM version of Win 8. Please upload what you can, within legal limits...

Nvidia Tegra 2 and above are ARMv7+ Chips. All Nvidia does it put their name on it. But those are ARMv7 chips. This goes for all the current and future mobile devices. If they are using i5 Intel with the builtin Intel GPU then that's a different story and it's not Nvidia. It's Intel. As far as I know Nvidia's mobile devices are going to be entirely ARM based.
As a matter of fact even Intel uses ARM to a lesser degree with memory managment chips for example. Everyone uses ARM to be specific. There isn't really a chip manufacturer out there that does not deal with ARM Holdings in some form. I'm very interested in putting Windows 8 on ARM so I'm following these threads closely myself. I have yet to see the ARM build and being a dev for MS myself, I have been testing Windows 8, but when I have conference calls with Microsoft and I ask for ARM support, they are telling me the setup is not done yet most likely and the support just isn't ready for developers yet. Stay tuned for sure. It should be a higher build number than 8200 I think.

Nvidia makes the tegra line of arm socs as well as chipsets for x86 and gpus for pcs. lets try not to get their products confused. Nvidia does a lot more than just "put their name on it" They tape out the chip and add their gpu to it. It's a custom implementation of an arm chip based loosely around the "standard" that arm creates. The series 7 slate that was passed out at build is the same series 7 that is going on sale later this month with an i5 in it, it also uses intel graphics. It's x86 aka not arm. Because there is no standard off the shelf arm system I highly doubt they will release any sort of preview arm build. Most likely it will take many many system dumps and a lot of work to get arm windows 8 working fully on devices that did not ship with it.

Remember Texas Instruments and Qualcomm are also throwing their hats into the windows 8 ARM(s) race. Don't count them out. Likely each device will have a version of windows compiled specifically for it ala windows mobile. I just don't see any real way around that. Unless they give the different arm chips special drivers and build them all in - but that would make for less efficiency and a waste of storage and more complexity considering that no one is going to be putting a windows 8 dvd into their tablet to install the arm version ever ever ever. I'm thinking this will all be precompiled specifically for each device and it will likely lack certain features like device manager and complicated driver handling controls. This is going to be a pain in the ass.
It is not confusing because I was only speaking on Nvidia ARM SoCs, not anything else they do. Ye have little faith if you think Microsoft can't bring a mutli kernalized version of Windows 8 to market for all the different platforms similar to what Linux/Android already does.
The big buzz about Windows 8 when we first started talking about it with Microsoft was "kernalized versions with ARM support". That's right from the horses mouth. I sure hope they deliver on that more than anything else. And seeing as how I help make the OS what it is, i'll be testing the functionality eventually. Due to NDA you aren't allowed to say much about it though until these types of releases become available to the general public and developers. Then we can discuss what works and what doesn't with the people who plan to actually use it and make applications for it.

It appears that Samsung is preparing to open-source some code pertaining to their Exynos ARM SoC.
At an event this weekend (YouTube stream), Samsung said they will open-source the kernel and platform components of their Exynos SoC. This new code is said to be dual-licensed under the GPLv2 and Apache 2.0 licenses.
Samsung also says it will support ARM Mali GPU driver development, which it uses with its Exynos SoC. It's not known at the moment whether this means supporting the community Lima driver project or something else.
As part of this new open-source initiative, Samsung looks like it will be upping its Linux support for the Origenboard, its primary Exynos development board.
Up to this point for Exynos there's been bits of open-source drivers, like their Exynos DRM driver that is in the mainline Linux kernel but the 3D bits are not covered and they have no open-source user-space for 3D / OpenGL ES coverage.
It will be interesting to see what Samsung ultimately does with their Exynos open-source play since most ARM SoC vendors aren't too open-source friendly up to this point. It was just days ago though that word on the new Google Chromebook emerged, which boasts a Samsung Exynos 5250 SoC with Cortex-A15 cores.
Google certainly does like open-source for their ChromeOS work such as their work on Coreboot support for new hardware and Google's work on open-source graphics drivers for use by their earlier Intel-based Chromebooks.

The problems are real. I still have yet to get a fully dialed-in overclock going - I either have to choose RAM or CPU, but not both. I do have a promise from one of AMD's community managers in Australia that he'll help me work on that soon!

[Portal Article] XDA PC Hardware Analysis : Intel Core X and AMD Threadripper Face...

HEDT processors and platforms are some of the hardest to get when it comes to reviews. Given how new we are to the scene we're actually not surprised that we didn't receive samples... but the tests still needed to be done somehow. Thankfully a friend now at AVADirect (Shannon Robb) was able to offer up the hardware and conduct these tests for us! The results are fantastic for Android team builds - if you were thinking of upgrading, this shows it's a great time to consider it.
