[Portal Article] XDA Takes on Ryzen: In-Depth Look of AMD’s AM4 Processors On Linux - PC Hardware Portal Article Discussion

Article Posted: April 24, 2017
When we heard AMD was working a new processor lineup - one that could compete against Intel's 8-core, 16-thread i5-5960X in performance... we definitely wanted to test that.
Curious what we found? Read the article here: https://www.xda-developers.com/xda-...ook-of-amds-new-processors-on-the-linux-side/
Anyone bought Ryzen? If so, what are your thoughts?
How about Gigabyte motherboard owners - having any more issues with them since the bug and fix have been identified?

used a variety of Ryzen CPU/Motherboard combos, love the performance that it brings to the table.

The problems are real. I still have yet to get a fully dialed-in overclock going - I either have to choose RAM or CPU, but not both. I do have a promise from one of AMD's community managers in Australia that he'll help me work on that soon!

directx 9 on hd2

does the gpu of hd2 is powerful enough to handle directx 9 announced as requirement for wp7
I was wondering the same thing the other day and couldn't find any official spec sheets. I asked over in one of the threads in the WP7s forums and I got the idea that OpenGL ES 2.0 was supported, which was 'basically the same.'
does any one know any useful info
http://brew.qualcomm.com/brew_bnry/pdf/brew_2007/Tech-303_Ligon.pdf
See page 15 for the best tech specs I've seen on the snapdragon / z430 / ATI LT. Still very light on details but claims direct3d sm3 support.
For that specific chipset (MSM7850) they claim DX9 support on page 31.
Their old chip (7500) supports DX7.
Since that was 2007, we can presume they've maintained similar compatibility in their newer (8250) chipset, yes?
Missed that bit, now all we need is a driver </sarcasm> for the humour impaired.
[sarcasm]obviously MS is aiming really high this time..
DX9 compatible portable devices, that use huge amounts of power so they can do what?
render a load of bloody text!
whoopppeee !
[/sarcasm]
so tje final answer is that hd2 gpu is enough for directx 9 or what?
The only correct answer to anything around here is, that noone knows nothing at all!
We can't run DX9 on WMPS7 so what ever?!
Before everyone freaks out, about fckn WMPS7, why not wait until you really see something?
Actually all the previews by microsoft were pretty ****ty! The phones worked pretty slow, I dont like that "hub" thing, and they are limited to the ground!
Thats what I would call "YaI" -> Yet another Iphone...
I'm loving WM6 and the only OS I'll be switching to, if WM6 dies (what i dont think, cuz there are more programmers who like WM6) will be android, but not another limited bull**** os

[webtop] NVIDIA Releases Tegra 12 Alpha 1 Ubuntu-Based Linux

Being released by NVIDIA this afternoon is the Tegra 12 Alpha 1 Linux release. This is a Linux software release intended for developers using NVIDIA's Tegra 2 platform.
The NVIDIA Tegra Linux 12 Alpha 1 release is based on the Linux 2.6.38 kernel and is derived from Ubuntu. Graphics standards supported by this Tegra-ified Ubuntu release include OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0, EGL 1.3, OpenMAX IL 1.1, and RandR 1.3.
For those interested in Linux for Tegra 12 Alpha 1, the relevant links are available from this forum thread.

O.... so this replaced webtop? (or might/will?)
Edit: We don't have the Tegra 250 chip, I think we have have the Tegra 200 chip... the driver package is for 250.

Nice but this belongs in the General forum.
If you didn't create it, it doesn't belong in development. It's a nice sticky that is on other devices' development forum and i think it applies here as well.

But it looks like the Alpha Release only supports Tegra 250 "Harmony".
Taking directly from the Release Notes,
Code:
Note: This alpha release of Tegra Linux Driver Package (L4T.ER1 ) is a
release for Tegra 250 “Harmony” only. The information in these release
notes is preliminary
According to pdadb.net Atrix has Tegra 2 250 chip, also wikipedia says it has Tegra 250 AP20H (H stands for Harmony?)

That is correct. There is no Tegra 200.
The Tegra 250 AP20H is the chip used in phones, Tegra 250 T20 is used in tablets. As far as I can tell, the biggest difference between the two SoCs is that the Geforce ULP GPU is clocked higher on the tablets (333mhz vs 300).
So this could be huge for WebTop?

Possibly... but to be honest, I'm not willing to give up Flash to go up to 11.04, let alone things like the Android-In-Window functionality. Updated versions of those are a lot harder to get. It might be able to get an updated Flash if we could find a Linux-based device out there that we could hack, but the others...? Good luck.
I'll be trying an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 at some later point in time, but I can't make any promises that it will succeed.

NVIDIA might provide one to some of its OEM/ODM customers, but I don't think they publicly distribute Flash for public consumption. I expect it'll be the same in this case - if we could somehow get our hands on a leak of Flash for Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04, we might be able to get something working, but otherwise, we're pretty much out of luck.
Depending on what kind of performance gains there are, this could be awesome. Although you wouldn't directly replace it, you'd be better off making a custom "distro" for the atrix using bits and pieces from webtop and combining them with the nvidia build.
Does anyone know exactly how the webtop environment boots? Important thing being the kernel. If it runs similar to a chroot you'd need a custom kernel as well.
Look up tegra on wikipedia we have 200 it says.

There's no such thing as a Tegra 200 chip! Whenever it is referred to that way it is the because it's part of the 200 SERIES. Each being near identical with different clock speeds and possible some specific optimisations for the 3D models.
The Atrix has a Tegra 250 AP20H.

First Ubuntu Tablet hardware announced

Australian-based firm, Intermatrix, have announced the first Ubuntu Tablet hardware, due to start shipping in October 2013 (http://www.ubuntutablet.com.au).
A 7-inch tablet has only been announced at the moment; plans to produce a 10-inch tablet are under way.
Specs are similar to what Canonical are currently developing/targeting their 7-inch model on: 1.5GHz Quad-Core Cortex A9, 1GB RAM.
That was rather quick!.. I wanna see System76 do a tablet tho.
given your username intermatrixau, I am assuming you work for said company.
So, firstly, great job on being first - if I didn't already have a Nexus 7 i'd preorder, but it's not really a big enough change in specs for me to consider change at this point - I would get major wife agro and hammered by the minister for finance, who happens to be the same person.
So, question I have is - why not go for 2gb ram or more? as it is a full OS when docked, I wouldn't want it sluggish in any way opening up desktop applications. Although that said, I have not actually used Ubuntu Touch on my N7 yet so not sure if more will make much difference

Yeah, 2GB would be nice.
We'd actually originally intended to release the 7-inch tablet with 2GB RAM, but unfortunately, our hardware guys reckon the chipset won't take a single 2GB chip (and there's no room for a second one!). As far as we can tell, at the moment, there's no 7-inch tablets on the market with 2GB RAM (yet).

Returning my N7v2... buying an HP Slatebook x2!

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/ho...us/en/pc_cons/higher_asp/slatebook_x2/buynow8
Processor
NVIDIA® Tegra® 4 T40S with Intel HD Graphics (1.8 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache)
Graphics
Intel HD Graphics 4000
HOLY SHEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIII****!
I just found out that the HP Slatebook x2 comes with an Intel HD 4000, not the Tegra 4 GPU!
THIS MAKES THE SLATEBOOK THE MOST POWERFUL GAMING ANDROID TABLET EVER MADE!
http://anandtech.com/show/7190/nvidia-shield-review-tegra-4-crossroads-pc-mobile-gaming/5
The HD 4000 is roughly 1.5x faster than the Tegra 4 GPU. The HD 4000 is also roughly 3.0x faster than the Adreno 320 in the N7v2!
I'm returning my N7v2 and buying the Slatebook ASAP... will let anyone who's interested know more!
But its too expensive!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
It certainly seems like a nice device but its more than double the price...
the price is not for me even though i spent 300 on the nvidia shield and 270 on the n7 i think its ok...i would not get it though after seeing how bad hp were with there own product that they killed in less than 3 months now they move to android. simple fact is i dont trust them period no matter how good the device may look.
Psh! It's not too expensive! My 32 GB N10 was $30 more. So what if it's twice the price of the N7? It's also more than twice the value, so you're getting what you pay for.
If everybody used the argument "it's too expensive" then we'd all be buying $60 Chinese Android tablets off Amazon.
I'm sure the Slate is great, but main reason I bought the N7 was the price.
Sent from my Incredible S using xda premium
Double the price, and it is a 10 inch. They aren't even in the same catagory.
You guys are completely missing the point.

The main points out of the page... lists nothing Intel wise. My guess it was an oops on the main page.
And if it was in there... why would it run on a Nvidia chipset, it wouldn't it would be on an intel CPU.
I'm really confuse with the Intell Hd4000. No way HP was able to use an intel GPU chip with Nvidia's CPU/GPU combo, or did they? haha would be awesome though. I'm sure this is a type or error.

Intel isn't the best at battery life. If it is a PC Slate.
Also, if it is an Intel chip, it EMULATES ARM code, so while it may be faster as a whole, emulating ARM might make it slower.
The whole Intel/Android marriage is too new to really know how it will work. Have fun!

It's not a PC Slate, it's an Android slate.

It also comes with TWO batteries - one in the tablet, and one in the keyboard dock. So battery life will not be an issue.

I've seen a lot of people complaining about this. Who cares if it comes with a 64-bit processor versus a 32-bit? Do you need 4GB+ of ram for arguing that you must have a 64-bit OS? Or are you hoping they launch it in 64-bit so you get the next latest and greatest processor? Android L will launch in 32/64-bit flavors. I would put my bet on the tablet containing the 64-bit version.

Totally agree with adio01, I believe that having 64 bit support will only be useful if you need to allocate more than 4GB of memory. There is however, a per process limit of 3GB on 32bit. So 64bit support would make sense if you:
a) Have more than 4GB of RAM
b) Have an application that is very very thirsty and needs more than 3GB of memory
Scenario a is obvious. If the device has less than 4GB of memory there is no problem. 64bit actually introduces some additional overhead so it might actually perform marginally worse than 32bit.
Scenario b is very unlikely on a mobile device. This would make sense when doing heavy video editting or photoshop on a desktop.
It does look good on the box though but that would be beneficial to marketing only.
So what's the screen size for it? Some sites say 5.9 and others 5.2. I'm hoping it's not 5.9..
64bit has lots more advantages than larger memory addressing capabilities!
Know your facts before spouting off in a public forum!
