Samsung S8 with Exynos - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello,
Planning to buy the S8, but only the Exynos variants are available where I live. I want to know whether the rom support will be the same for the exynos variant just as the snapdragon variant. Should I pay extra couple of bucks to order the snapdragon variant from somewhere else?
Or should I just wait for the OnePlus 5?
Thank You

There are a few custom ROM for Exynos S8
I'm not sure there is anyone for the Snapdragon S8, locked bootloader. I'm not even sure you can root a S8 snapdragon variant
But no AOSP for any S8, if you want anything else than Touchwiz ROMs, OP5 would be best for you

if you are a custom rom guy, then oneplus 5 is definitely for you. although i was pretty disappointed with the oneplus 3 when i got it. hopefully 5 will be different but i wont switch to a Chinese phone from my beautiful s8

Well all of these little things that reviewers dont mention like the wifi reception being poor, vibration motor being weak, speakers really bad, camera quality pretty bad, lte reception pretty bad (i live in eu) so you things stacked up to a point where i decided to switch back to samsung and i dont regret it at all. But by all means buy the op5 and try it out.

But any AOSP ROM on any device causes these problems, right ?

so wait no roms like RR,Carbon etc will be available on the S8 with Exynos?

They maybe available with exynos. Not snapdragon they have locked bootloaders. Chances are you wont be able to root snapdragon or custom ROM.

Galaxy S6 Edge plus, or 6P?

Hello all.
I have T Mobile jump on demand, and right now I have galaxy S6 Edge plus, but I have always used the nexus phone. Does anyone know if next nexus will be better than S6 edge plus? with this new jump from T Mobile, we have the option to do three changes, I love nexus phones, but S6 Edge plus is amazing. What do you think, nexus 6P, or S6 Edge Plus?
Thank you for your answers.

For T-mobile and Sprint users the s6 + note 5 are the kings of all cell phones. The samsung phones beat the nexus 6p in every category. People on Verizon and AT&T it's best to switch to Nexus 6p because we have lock bootloaders, super slow updates etc.. I have a note 5 verizon and I'm switching, but when it comes to specs the nexus 6p can't even get close to the note 5. I'm going to do a youtube video before selling my note 5 once I get my nexus 6p.

It's better because the boot loader is not locked and it doesn't have carrier bloat.

Better in terms of HW on paper. But SW wise nexus will always be king. In terms of a fluid UI that is. Hopefully google really optimized battery life this time around to complete with OEM's. You want a fluid device with the fastest updates and good HW ... Nexus all the way.

Yep Nexus rules...its a XDA thing!
i was asking myself that exact same question, especially cuz here in Germany the S6E+ and the 6P will only be about 30€ apart (ikr, insane.... one of those rare instances where i wished i was in the US! ugh)
anyways, bottom line was that id still be going for the 6P, im just too much of a nexus fanboy direct and clean android updates, tons of custom roms, larger battery and, tbh, better looking design did it for me!

im kinda disappointed... the 810 processor have been killing phones all year. And see as how its underclocked in the 6p one can only assume that it still sucks.
Samsung is a no go. KNOX on Samsung has me running away.
Thankful
I appreciate your responses, definitely I am going back to the nexus devices.
Does anyone know when it will be available in the different carriers, here in US?
Again, thank you all.

Why do you assume when this is NOT TRUE.

If any carriers in the US does not sell 6P, jump on demand from T Mobile will be useless, I am very disappointed, I bought S6 Edge with jump, thinking changing it for Nexus 6P, what do we do now!

Not really sure where the assumption is. Not including the the SD 810v1, if you look up the OnePlus 2 which have v2 it stills suffers from performance issues, heating issues, and throttling issue....so remind me what it is that I'm assuming again unless this SD 810 is actually the 820 in disguise

I'm failing to see how the s6+ and note 5 are smashin the 6p in the HW department. They are very comparable in specs.

That's what I'm thinking seems lame people are saying it is better hardware wise in a phone that hasn't been even reviewed yet. Exynos doesn't even have any great support but that's a software thing.
Once you've tasted Exynos you'll never want it again. No sane dev wants to waste the time on that crap. Factor in KNOX, LagWiz and Samsung's notoriously bad "support" if you ever need 'em, makes it an easy choice. If you need/want root it's even easier unless you want a goofy "warranty void" message every bootup.
Meanwhile all the Nexuses will be on Android N this time next year and the Note 5 will be abandonware in classic Samsung fashion, all the dev forums will be barren except a few old hacked stock-ish roms. Even Samsung doesn't like to support Exynos

Swapped my S6 for OPT

Ive swapped my s6 duos for an oneplus two. Its not premium like s6 but i like it more than Samsung. 1st think i did was removing oxygenOS and installing HydrogenOS. Significant more ScreenOnTime around 8h. Display its 1080p which was perfect for s6 to have. I dont notice any heating (snapdragon 810) and the best part is various custom roms to chose (cm13 based , o2os , h2os, cm12.1 , flymeOS, MiUi will be soon supported) Cell reception its far better . where i live i had to be lucky to get 2 bars with 4G and eith OPT i get full bars LTE.... Oneplus two its way more better than sgs6 in multitasking. The only CON is camera . its lame. But i don't use my phone for taking photos so its not important for me. I courage you guys to get rid of Samsung as fast as possible. They need a lesson to learn . not to be like apple.
I gave you a thanks, you've been very helpful, but we like the Touchwiz, otherwise we would not have bought a Samsung. :good:

Not all of us like the touchwiz. But that build quality and hardware make it hard for me to part ways with my phone.
The worst thing for me by far far is the KNOX flag on this phones.I dont see my self buying again samsung device no matter how good it might be.

Excuse me but I'm Italian and I did not understand what you wrote.
Since I stopped trying to disable apps with package disabler and disabling features, and running phone stock, it's perfectly quick and stable and have no multitasking or bug issues.
Camera is brilliant but needs manual and raw support.
Phones with bad cameras are deal breakers to me. Custom ROMS are no help if you need a good camera.]
Don't see the problem with touchwiz except maybe the name...

In my last days with s6 i had installed pure stock OI9 Btu... I was very happy with... Better than having costom rom. But idk why samsung fail at multitasking, even when device it has ddr4 ram. Phuuuuuu imagine OPT with ddr4 ram and the fast storage chip s6 use... Touchwiz ita not the name we hate ita the past history it had ... Always laggy always ugly. Samsung rom were full oj bloatware (more than 300 apps/services installed) useless features sensors etc etc. All this stuff made the device laggy... S6 was different from other S series but samsung need to work more. Also im spaming for the 1080p display its f*** enough for 5 - 5.5 inch display. See the mx5 pro ( note 5 with 1080p ) its doin perfect job
How the reception cell quality on stock OI9 BTU? Better?

No phone or any product for that matter is flawless. That's how the market works, otherwise, we wouldn't have reason to upgrade to newer phones.
"fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
If you feel you've been deceived by samsung, you're free to move on to another manufacturer. But complaining on GALAXY S6 FORUM is not the most efficient way to go about it.

Is anyone concerned about optimization?

So as I'm sure everyone here is aware given XDA's articles on it, Samsung phones with the Snapdragon 820 (well, really ALL Samsung phones, but the 820 ones in particular) had some serious performance issues compared to both the Exynos version, as well as other phones with similar Snapdragon processors.
Does anyone have any info or inkling or just general thoughts on whether the S8 series will have similar problems?
Personally, I'm kind of turn, as I was more or less pleased with the performance of my Note 5, but downright can't stand the S7's performance, so I'm kind of torn on what direction I'm going to go with buying the S8 or not.
I always worry Samsung and Qualcomm will screw it up. I wouldn't be surprised if my OnePlus 3T outperforms the Snapdragon S8's.
Yeah, that's pretty much the exact comparison I've been thinking about.
Of course, I don't think it's even possible for a phone to be faster than the 3T is in day-to-day use.

Oh please. I had zero complaints with my Mate 9 when I had it, and my Pixel XL is perfectly smooth as well. My 7 Plus is a hair smoother sometimes, and that is faster than the 3T.
HOPEFULLY Samsung has their **** together this time, especially with the 835.

From my EXTREMELY limited time using the device in store, it seems that Samsung has tightened things up a bit. It's a good bit smoother than last year's 7 and 7 Edge. Everything is noticeably more fluid and I didn't experience any hangs when opening apps.
Anyone else notice the speaker volume extremely low?

i think even the exynos get a lot of more support than the snapdragon one
assuming how the snap 820 was, the Xiaomi Mi5, One Plus 3, got really a lot lot of custom roms, meanwhile LG G5 and HTC 10 not much, meanwhile the S7 Edge, as i can see in the forum, has nothing for the 820
I assume now the Xiaomi Mi6 will have a lot of custom roms, with the Snapdragon 835, i don't know about other future phones with this besides the S8, but i'm sure the Exynos S8 will get more community support than the Snapdragon One

I'll never buy another Xiaomi. They violate Googles policy and take forever to release the kernel source. They won't even bother until the next model is out. Also, they have below par camera's and are slow with important updates. Their idea of a firmware update is to add something to the calculator, or improve their forum app. Lol. Downloading an entire ROM for that is a joke. Can't wait to sell my Mi 5s Plus.
Oneplus is the best way to go for custom ROM's. I wouldn't choose a phone just for that though, each to their own I guess.

[Question] Current state of custom roms

Its been quite a while since I've had a phone that's been able to run custom roms (been on samsung snapdragon models with non unlockable bootloaders for a while now....think nexus 6p was my last phone with custom roms), but I remember that rom's came out pretty quick (however that could have been because of some nexus devices I had)
I guess what i'm getting at is, like how TWRP was facing issues with decryption, is there a major hurdle with custom roms for the 6t? Is it the fingerprint reader? Or perhaps lack of interest in the device (this one would be weird to me since it feels like this is a pretty popular device at this point).
Please don't this as a "WHERE R ALL MAH ROMZ AT " kinda thread. Purely curiosity as I'm super happy with my phone currently with magisk and substratum :]

Well, this should probably go in the question and answer area, but legitimate question still. I have heard some others in other threads say that the fingerprint scanner might be weird to work with, since it's a new concept. It seems that OnePlus devices generally have some solid Dev scenes though, I'm thinking it's a matter of time until we start to see a bunch of custom roms surface. We just got a functional TWRP build that even still is getting small tweaks and updates so I think we're just in early stages of the phone, the best is yet to come! Never settle ma dude!
6 and 6T source's are unified so roms aren't hard to bring up but most devs will not be interested making the jump from 6 or they'll make the jump to the Poco F1

Sucks that the F1 doesn't have my LTE bands 2 and 12, or I would have gotten it in a heartbeat over this. Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing phone that looks way better than the F1, but the bigger battery and thriving development is super tempting.

Yep if it wasn't for the poor quality panel they used and the LED bleed + the notch I'd of taken the Poco F1 was on sale recently for like £279 for the 6/64 variant. Cheaper than a OnePlus 3 at launch.

The notch and panel weren't deal breakers for me, but my phone is my primary source of internet access and I need those 2 bands in my area for decent connection.

Improved and heavily quality increased for the Exynos 990 for the Note 20 Ultra?!

Do you consider true that Exynos 990 version for Note 20 Ultra would be heavily improved and updated to match at least the Snapdragon 865 SoC?

I am not refering to GPU, but in terms of optimisation, smootness and standby battery draw and termal optimisation.
Part of the problem is/was throttling and this has allegedly been addressed. As most of you have probably seen there are new benchmarks which purport to show it not being so spruced up as some are saying. Going to need some real numbers from real users with an actual production device to know for sure.
I wonder - with Samsung releasing the Snapdragon varient in their Home Country, South Korea, it seems to me they seem like they are giving up on Exynos. I could be wrong of course ......

They know people will still buy the exynos anyway and then when they buy it, knowing fully well that exynos is inferior, they mourn about it.
After the Note 10 plus, I decided that I really didn't need to root my phone any longer. I live in the US so in the past, I would buy an Exynos variant from the UK of whatever Samsung phone was coming out - and then root the phone when Magisk became available. But with each new phone, less and less custom development was out there and the Snapdragon phones that were bootloader locked all seemed to be bit better than their Exynos counterpart.
So - with the S20 Ultra and now the Note 20 Ultra - I am fine with getting the Snapdragon version and not worry about rooting. I haven't missed rooting very much (there are a few things) but for the most part I have been ok with the Non-Rooted Snapdragon - over the rooted Exynos.
And I am looking forward to August 21st (actually hoping it arrives a few days before!

I haven't felt the necessity to root for the last few years at all. I would say, rooting has way more demerits than pretty negligible merits now a days for all flagships and even several midragers. It might still be helpful in few ways for people who use one for many years without future official software support, but with Samsung's commitment of 3 yrs of software version support for S, N, Z series and even A lines(till hardware supports), the need will be even lesser now..less development is less for a reason , it's just going to be more less, and less!
Software part is already taken care of and will be, by Samsung for those who don't/cannot/will not use for 3 years+ and that's a lengthy time in the world of smartphones. As such, it's unfortunate that the most advanced Samsung flagships do not have the most advanced SoC for EU, India etc..

Actually you can easily get Snapdragon version of the S20 Ultra with unlocked bootloader (SM-G9880/SM-G988N). So there is no need to choose between root and Snapdragon now. I have one and it works just fine.

I understand - but what I didn't mention is that I also want to make sure that ATT Wifi Calling and Video Calling on ATT Works - In addition, I am trading in my old Galaxy S20 Ultra which lowers my cost by $650 - I don't think either of these things are possible if buy anything different than what I have already purchased.
And my point stands - I really don't miss root at all. There just isn't enough "extra" that I can do with a rooted phone that makes it worth rooting., For ME.
That is my opinion for me only - you and anyone else who feels different can certainly do whatever you feel is right for you.
Best of luck my friend - can't wait for the new NOTE 20 Ultra to arrive!
