Galaxy S6 Edge plus, or 6P? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all.
I have T Mobile jump on demand, and right now I have galaxy S6 Edge plus, but I have always used the nexus phone. Does anyone know if next nexus will be better than S6 edge plus? with this new jump from T Mobile, we have the option to do three changes, I love nexus phones, but S6 Edge plus is amazing. What do you think, nexus 6P, or S6 Edge Plus?
Thank you for your answers.

For T-mobile and Sprint users the s6 + note 5 are the kings of all cell phones. The samsung phones beat the nexus 6p in every category. People on Verizon and AT&T it's best to switch to Nexus 6p because we have lock bootloaders, super slow updates etc.. I have a note 5 verizon and I'm switching, but when it comes to specs the nexus 6p can't even get close to the note 5. I'm going to do a youtube video before selling my note 5 once I get my nexus 6p.

It's better because the boot loader is not locked and it doesn't have carrier bloat.

Better in terms of HW on paper. But SW wise nexus will always be king. In terms of a fluid UI that is. Hopefully google really optimized battery life this time around to complete with OEM's. You want a fluid device with the fastest updates and good HW ... Nexus all the way.

Yep Nexus rules...its a XDA thing!

i was asking myself that exact same question, especially cuz here in Germany the S6E+ and the 6P will only be about 30€ apart (ikr, insane.... one of those rare instances where i wished i was in the US! ugh)
anyways, bottom line was that id still be going for the 6P, im just too much of a nexus fanboy direct and clean android updates, tons of custom roms, larger battery and, tbh, better looking design did it for me!

im kinda disappointed... the 810 processor have been killing phones all year. And see as how its underclocked in the 6p one can only assume that it still sucks.

Samsung is a no go. KNOX on Samsung has me running away.

Thankful
I appreciate your responses, definitely I am going back to the nexus devices.
Does anyone know when it will be available in the different carriers, here in US?
Again, thank you all.

Why do you assume when this is NOT TRUE.

If any carriers in the US does not sell 6P, jump on demand from T Mobile will be useless, I am very disappointed, I bought S6 Edge with jump, thinking changing it for Nexus 6P, what do we do now!

Not really sure where the assumption is. Not including the the SD 810v1, if you look up the OnePlus 2 which have v2 it stills suffers from performance issues, heating issues, and throttling issue....so remind me what it is that I'm assuming again unless this SD 810 is actually the 820 in disguise

I'm failing to see how the s6+ and note 5 are smashin the 6p in the HW department. They are very comparable in specs.

That's what I'm thinking seems lame people are saying it is better hardware wise in a phone that hasn't been even reviewed yet. Exynos doesn't even have any great support but that's a software thing.

Once you've tasted Exynos you'll never want it again. No sane dev wants to waste the time on that crap. Factor in KNOX, LagWiz and Samsung's notoriously bad "support" if you ever need 'em, makes it an easy choice. If you need/want root it's even easier unless you want a goofy "warranty void" message every bootup.
Meanwhile all the Nexuses will be on Android N this time next year and the Note 5 will be abandonware in classic Samsung fashion, all the dev forums will be barren except a few old hacked stock-ish roms. Even Samsung doesn't like to support Exynos

They are comparable on specs but the note is overall better in hardware. I will say the nexus is on par with the 6S plus.

you simply cant compare specs between the iphone and android phones. ios requires so much less horsepower

"What are you upgrading from, and why?" Thread

I personally am upgrading from a Nexus 5 mainly because I upgrade my phone every two years anyways.
I am also upgrading because of the abysmal battery life with the n5, and I want more speed and ram.
Plus, a better camera and better speakers will be very nice. How about you guys?
I'm upgrading from a Note 4...
1) the lag can be ridiculous and nothing I do resolves it
2) the updates take too damn long to trickle down with AT&T having to mess with the firmware before releasing
3) work app will only work on nexus phones because of requiring updates to be as soon as possible

Samsung galaxy note 2. I get my phones through work. This is a great benefit for someone with more kids than disposable income (and because I'm always on call)
Although the brass purchases nearly every new device for testing (we are a broadcast company with video app and lots of games), they frown upon replacing personal devices each year.
I've had my note 2 since it came out. And last year was the first year computer acquisitions was able to offer/get nexus devices. But the demand was so high, I was unable to get a quote for the nexus 6 till March!
By that time, I figured I'd wait another 6 months for the newest nexus device.
I'm a flashaholic, so I've been rocking lollipop or note4 on my note 2 for a bit, but pure nexus will sure be nice!

Since you're a flashaholic, you'll definitely love nexus devices. There's a reason the development posts for the nexus devices have so many threads.
LG G3 because it's been over a year now and the cpu isn't good enough for 1440p and I have always wanted a nexus phone because verizon is sh*t and fast updates
I'm upgrading from the Samsung S6 with Verizon. I really love the phone and I'm rooted. I'm stuck on an older version of lollipop just to keep root. I had a version of the phone with the latest update and no root and the phone suffered drastically.
I chose to get the nexus 6p because I love Android and I want to get updates immediately. I'm hoping that Huawei makes a splash with there first US released phone.

I dropped my LG g2 a week ago at work slightly and a couple days later it stopped reading all Sim cards. Sucked because it had one of the best development communities I've ever been apart of and the phone had unbelievable battery life. Phone just turned 2 years old, so I guess it was time for an upgrade anyway. Now I just have an excuse.

i'm coming from a tmobile galaxy s6 and i'm going to get the nexus 6p, but i want to wait a month or two to see how this snapdragon 810 performs in it. with the recent news of the xperia z5 heating up a lot even with sony putting in heat pipes and thermal pasting to try to keep it cool, i'm wondering how the 6p users will feel once they have it in hand and have a chance to work the soc.

What is the Future of this phone as of now ?

I've had this phone about 3 months now and thought it was going to be good in the dev community but as im seeing now it seems all dev for this phone is dead or dying, so what hope is there that we will have any roms or new mods for this phone?Yes i understand about the locked bootloader but i was looking at the note 7 forum and they have roms for there phone and the note 7 came out after the 7 edge? i would just like to know in everyone's opinion should we be waiting and hoping for someone to break the codes and unlock our phones true potential or just shut my mouth and sit back and take what i've got and be happy with it. Don't get me wrong i commend the Echoe rom team and all the hard work they did for us and that should not be overlooked. All im saying is what do we need to get this phone poppin like all the other phones ?
Thanks
A New S7 Edge Owner
I guess all we could do is hang on to this one and trade it in or sell it when the S8 comes out and maybe we won't get screwed on the next model.
I was thinking about trading it for one of the new Google Pixel XL phones, but they aren't going to have an SD slot. I think I am still going to trade it for something else though... having a hard time figuring out what I want that's comparable.
If you're looking for a mod friendly device, you should look elsewhere. With a locked bootloader, you're not going to get much dev support. Having said that, I would say that the future of this phone is bright. I can honestly say that I see no reason for me to mess with the system. It's excellent as it is.

Yea, hate to say it, but Google should stick to making software. Either that, or actually develop the production capacity to do your own manufacturing or at least quality control, instead of farming it out to random Chinese manufacturers. My only experience with Nexus is the Nexus 5, but that device was awful. In fact, I can't think of a single redeeming quality of that device.
I'm selling mine and going back to the Note 4

I've been a nexus user since the Nexus 5 launched. and a CM user for years before then. the S7 edge is my first Samsung device (and only because I got it for free), because I have always felt the same way about Samsung as I do about apple. all hype, all trend, ignorant (non-power-user) fanbase. Samsung is literally the apple of Android, if you know what I mean. I'll never own another Samsung device after this one.

Do you think the bootloader will be unlocked? I'm still kinda new to Android and the first recent one I got was this S7 Edge. The V20 does look really nice though, hope it is released soon.
I also like the HTC 10 because there is a ton of stuff for it. The Viper rom looks awesome, pretty crazy they have OTA updates for the rom.

A few developments in the last month:
Unified 935U based roms - This will be great as the unification of US rom development (and the ability to have VOLTE) will make life better for US S7 users as they will have the newest rom of the 5 options running.
Note 7 release: The Note 7's UI seems better (samsung has already started promised to unify the UI in android 7) and the rom has been ported (same chipset).
Enhanced T-mobile Support on international models: Wifi calling/Volte has now been ported to the International (935F) model, at least if rooted. I switched as the Exynos version is faster and has better battery life (and the gap is greater in rooted versions than stock) and a stronger development community including Note 7 ports.

Goodness no. If you root and just care about speed, battery and custom rom options on android 6/touchwiz (and don't care about US warranty support), I would say yes.
If you care about warranty support, want an unrooted phone (or the ability to root without tripping Knox), want to use Samsung Pay or like T-mobile's financing options, The US model is definitely the one. It also has more upside
Long Term, Samsung's Android 7 may see a boot-loader unlock option, which would jump start CM/kernel development (cutting the performance gap between the phones and giving people who like Samsung's industrial design but not their software design a good solution). Next month, there will be Nexus phones running SD820, which will continue the advantage Qualcomm based roms have in custom development.
I'm going to be patient. This is a book I've read before. The fact is that the S7 edge will have the bootloader unlocked eventually.

The Nexus 5 was an awful device, with awful battery life, awful display, awful speaker, and awful camera. It was quick with stock Android, but it literally had no other redeeming qualities. Mine has been used as a paperweight, to keep papers from flying off my desk when my windows is open. I am not joking. I will take an Apple device over the Nexus 5 any day, and I can't stand Apple. And yes, I have an Apple device too. I have not had any other Nexus devices, and probably never will. Samsung devices have treated me very well over the years so I am sticking with them. And honestly, the GS7 is an excellent device all around, I couldn't care less about a locked bootloader. The days of spending hours/days flashing ROMs are behind me. I have more important things to do with my free time. So before you go off and make blanket statements such as "we don't know what we are doing," consider the fact that some of us don't share the same interests as you. The majority of the world wants a device that works out of the box and doesn't know what a bootloader is, much less that it can be locked or unlocked. You, and this community, are a tiny minority of smartphone users. And guess what, there are companies that cater to you as well. Don't be pissed at Samsung for delivering what their customers wanted.

Oneplus 3 vs 6p nexus

And, specifically, OP is notoriously slow to update their stock software with new releases. My son has had an OP3 for months. He's had one security update and zero sign of Nougat on the horizon. While they aren't as bad as, say, Samsung, this is generally the problem with hardware manufacturers. Monthly security updates and being first for full version updates is a huge advantage to the 6p.
Plus, if you follow instructions and take your time it's actually pretty hard to brick a 6p.
N6p works on all american carriers.... OP3 only works on the GSM american providers... So choose wisely based on your provider
Other than that, both are fantastic phones with the N6P having the upper hand only because of software updates
I've had the 6p (gave to my son) and now own the OP3.
The OP3 community on XDA is quite good and there are several roms to choose from - no surprise as they are developer friendly. The official roms are behind somewhat, but I suppose that's to be expected.
Currently I'm running one of the Nougat roms (even though they have bugs with the video camera still) and am quite happy with the phone overall.
I would say that the OnePlus is the closest thing to a Nexus you will find. The build quality is good, and I'm loving the fingerprint sensor on the front where it should be.
I specifically bought this phone after I saw what was on offer from Google this year - overpriced, ugly phones.
Had a OP3 and traded it for the N6P. Can't go wrong with either phone, but if you're looking for the latest and greatest ROM wise, the N6P wins. OP3 dash charging is real and the file transfer speeds are crazy fast too. 6P was a better choice for me. The N roms on the OP3 aren't there yet. Camera quality is terrible for anything not based on the official roms. Screen size and front facing speakers were also a big factor for me.
To add to the discussion, the OnePlus 3 is a great overall phone for the price, and especially if you don't ever plan to update (as they are few and far between) it also doesn't have the overheating problems notorious of the 6P. However, the 6P will have faster updates and will most likely have a much longer life (in terms of development) than the OnePlus 3. They are both very comparable and you can't go wrong with either one.
Personally, I've played with both and like both, but I much prefer the 1440p panel of the 6P over the 1080p of the OP3.

Samsung has some of the bloatiest Android bastardization out there. Not sure how this is a comparison of the 6p and OP3.

I have the LG G3 for 2 years now and i am ordering right now the 6P.... OP3 i have to buy voor 400 euros, no option plus is has smaller screen i hate... definitly the development will be there for this device, i will just go with CM15 or CM16 if official firmware is not released over 1.5 years. LG G3 also gets nouget but only custom rom... and with the speed, i still like my G3, its still fast... i guess last few years speed isnt really a thing i guess, as also for ram. 3 or 4 gb is enough, i never go beyond 2.5 gb of ram use on my current phone. As i am not going to use daydream virtual reality or those things... i am pretty standard and dont game on my phone. I just love to flash and tweak a phone.

Yeah. If you have a carrier version. Intl is great with not that much bloat, alot use Sammy's brower. The other Microsoft stuff are just shortcuts to playstore and they take no space at all

With the 6p, you're better off buying from Google directly, notwithstanding their announcement yesterday which seems to move away from supporting the Nexus line. As far as Sammy bloat, not only am I talking about awful Samsung specific apps, but also Touchwiz (which while better recently, is still a pretty bad launcher/skin experience), but also their attempts to make it far harder to customize your phone. I've had three different Galaxy phones and will never again go in that direction.
Again, this is pretty off-topic since the OP was asking to compare the 6p and OP3. My son has the latter and, while they have been somewhat slow to release firmware updates, the software experience is far more user-centered and it's much easier to customize them since they stuck closer to stock. In fact, I can use the same ADB/fastboot commands to unlock BL/flash/root for either the OP3 or 6p. Using your Sammy example, modding the phone is an absolute gongshow since you need Odin and it's almost impossible to do easily on a Mac.
I'm stuck between these two also, and don't want to wait until 2017 for the next Google thing.
The only reason I'm hesitant on the OnePlus 3 is because of the resolution and the fingerprint/button on the front, I hate phones that have something on the front like that.

In other words you're in a completely unrelated thread and trolling about your love of Samsung, which is completely off-topic from the question posed here.
It's really hard to choose
The nexus 6p has a better screen, better camera ans better speaker
While the oneplus 3 just flies through every task and a faster fingerprint sensor

I don't see how that's a hard choice. Snappiness can be a matter of ROM, kernel, and many other adjustable stuff. The 6p pluses you list aren't really adjustable.

Where to now?

I don't think there's a thread that's solely about this but just out of curiosity, where's everyone going? I'm thinking of going to google pixel but that price point is.... a bit too much.
I can't decide. Gotta get rid of it though which sucks. Feel like a fool downgrading to an S7E but the phone seems good. If they had 128gb iPhone 7 plus available I might get that. Never had an iPhone before so I'm not sure if I'd like ios but I like the looks of the phone and the speed. The main thing that worries me about the s7e is its only 32gb and I've never used an SD card before. Also I'm going to be real bummed if the s8 comes out and it's awesome but I can't get it because I used my upgrade on the s7e.

I feel the same way about the s8 being released. Yeah all the phones right now feel like a downgrade. I have a s7 active on one line and an open note 4 device. So I'm gonna move those around and probably use the s7 active if I really want to wait.
I might get iphone 7 plus but i will surely miss note 7 & its unique features. Don't want to go back to s7e or any other android as of now. I have used iphones before but its only worth for me if jailbroken. RIP Note 7
I just took my first step out of the Note 7 world. I ordered the Oneplus 3. Should hold me over until the next big thing comes around. One positive note I will still have note 7 for a couple of weeks until the one plus 3 arrives.
I'll likely be going to the v20 because it's not a downgrade to the level the s7 edge is and I'll be able to keep the BOGO deal we got on our note 7's. Otherwise I'd likely go to the pixel xl

I ended up on the S7 Edge, so far not too bad. Yet it is definitely a downgrade. I did get the 256gb SD card, and glad that works with the s7e. I would rather have the N7, but this will do. The battery is great, the screen is close to the same size. After disabling the AT&T and Google bloat, it runs smooth. I looked at the other phones out there, and the display is what has always grabbed me about Samsung, you get used to amoled and can't go back. AoD is getting better on the S7 edge and they are working on making some form of s note available.

I'd like to hold out for the Pixel XL... I'm not a fan of LG. Personally, the likelihood of a phone failure now is quite remote. 100 issues (at best) out of 3 million phones is better odds than getting struck lightning in Tampa. I'd just as soon keep the 7, but if they force the issue by blacklisting IMEI, then there is little other option...
What other options other than S7Edge for fast wireless charge are there???

Older Samsung phones, unfortunately Samsung is the only one with any kind of fast wireless charging

I'm going to the LG V20. I had an Optimus G Pro before my Note 4 (which i had before the Note7), and I loved that phone. Great battery life and fun to modify via root. Though, the battery life I got WAS due to root. Lol
Then I went to the Note 4 for the stylus. I felt like I took a hit with battery life, and the N4 seemed more boring for some reason, but it was OK.
So I'm thinking of going back to LG for at least the rest of this generation of phones, and may return to Samsung if they come out with a Note8 and if it turns out to be better than both the N7 and the V20. I won't preorder though. I'm going to wait at least 2 months to see how the phone behaves. No fires, no issues, and if it has everything I want, then yeah, sure, I'll then buy one.

Anyone looking at the Moto z play? Hmmmm
I did, but I wasn't impressed. If they had made a Moto X Pure 2016 model I would have been very tempted. The screen on that phone was very close to the 5.7 Super amoled that we note fans love. They just didn't make one this year. The mods seem like a cool idea tho.

This guy gets it! :good: Same thoughts all the way around, so I won't repeat anything he said.
I am going with the V20, I can't downgrade to anything else. I would have gladly picked up some kind of bootloader unlocked Moto Z Force if it existed, but stupid VzW over here had to make it exclusive.... I wanted to stay with Moto from my X Pure 2015, but there is no equivalent this year like the last post also mentioned.
The ONLY problems with the V20 for me are:
No stylus
No wireless charging
No waterproofing
No shatterproof screen
The last one refers to the Moto Z Force of course, not the Note7, but it is late 2016, I feel like we shouldn't be worried about our phones as much as we have in the past when manufacturers are doing so much to defend them from drops or spills. LG unloads this V20 and it's almost looking fragile to me!

With Lenovo laying off massive numbers of Moto people, and stating there's more to come in 2017, I don't trust them to continue following through with updates. But if you're rooted, that may not matter anyhow.

I tested out the 6s+ for a week just to get a feel for iOS again. It ain't for me. Whether it's emulation, torrents, S Pen, or Samsung Pay: Android natively does more than iOS natively allows me to.
This might be good for us.

Well I hope that's true. However, I already bought google pixel xl. So....... Oh well for them

Is anyone concerned about optimization?

So as I'm sure everyone here is aware given XDA's articles on it, Samsung phones with the Snapdragon 820 (well, really ALL Samsung phones, but the 820 ones in particular) had some serious performance issues compared to both the Exynos version, as well as other phones with similar Snapdragon processors.
Does anyone have any info or inkling or just general thoughts on whether the S8 series will have similar problems?
Personally, I'm kind of turn, as I was more or less pleased with the performance of my Note 5, but downright can't stand the S7's performance, so I'm kind of torn on what direction I'm going to go with buying the S8 or not.
I always worry Samsung and Qualcomm will screw it up. I wouldn't be surprised if my OnePlus 3T outperforms the Snapdragon S8's.
Yeah, that's pretty much the exact comparison I've been thinking about.
Of course, I don't think it's even possible for a phone to be faster than the 3T is in day-to-day use.

Oh please. I had zero complaints with my Mate 9 when I had it, and my Pixel XL is perfectly smooth as well. My 7 Plus is a hair smoother sometimes, and that is faster than the 3T.
HOPEFULLY Samsung has their **** together this time, especially with the 835.

From my EXTREMELY limited time using the device in store, it seems that Samsung has tightened things up a bit. It's a good bit smoother than last year's 7 and 7 Edge. Everything is noticeably more fluid and I didn't experience any hangs when opening apps.
Anyone else notice the speaker volume extremely low?

Haha, calm down there. I'm not trying to throw any other phones under the bus, I'm just saying the 3T's performance is impressive.
And, obviously, Apple is usually faster than Android in general.

Partially true, the S7 has plenty for the Exynos. It's the Snapdragon variant that won't see any support, if it's locked down again of course.

i think even the exynos get a lot of more support than the snapdragon one
assuming how the snap 820 was, the Xiaomi Mi5, One Plus 3, got really a lot lot of custom roms, meanwhile LG G5 and HTC 10 not much, meanwhile the S7 Edge, as i can see in the forum, has nothing for the 820
I assume now the Xiaomi Mi6 will have a lot of custom roms, with the Snapdragon 835, i don't know about other future phones with this besides the S8, but i'm sure the Exynos S8 will get more community support than the Snapdragon One

I'll never buy another Xiaomi. They violate Googles policy and take forever to release the kernel source. They won't even bother until the next model is out. Also, they have below par camera's and are slow with important updates. Their idea of a firmware update is to add something to the calculator, or improve their forum app. Lol. Downloading an entire ROM for that is a joke. Can't wait to sell my Mi 5s Plus.
Oneplus is the best way to go for custom ROM's. I wouldn't choose a phone just for that though, each to their own I guess.
