NFC question: is there a UK/EU ROM to flash to US 64GB version to get NFC? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

I'm changing over from Big Red to Big Pink here in the US. I'm all but sold on the G5 plus, but the no NFC thing is a major drag.
Is there a UK/EU rom that can be flashed to restore the NFC on the US version? Or should I just pick up the EU version from Amazon UK?

There is no rom to enable NFC.
NFC is a hardware component not included in the US version to save cost. I believe we got a compass instead or something lol. The rationale was that the US consumer barely uses NFC.
So.. yeah.. if you want the NFC get the EU version or India version or whatever. The "everybody else" versions of phones tend to be better anyway. I do have the US cheapo version and love it.. but have no need for NFC.

Amazon UK don't currently sell the G5 Plus, only the G5.
That might change at some stage.
If you're looking to buy the EU version then Amazon.de have it. Use chrome to translate from German.
This one has NFC, 3GB ram, 32GB and the dual SIM tray (I'm typing in one now!)
One downside of an EU version would be that potentially it might not support the US LTE bands so you might have to use 3G . Something you could look into anyhow.

I wonder how hard it would be to buy the hardware pieces to add it.

I am guessing it is in there already, i cant see Lenovo going to the expense of making sure you lot get a compass but no NFC and we get NFC but no compass.
The Moto X Play didnt have a notification LED or Accelerometer but both were present in the hardware and disabled.

Converting US version to EU?

In Nexus 5 there is a possibility to activate EU bands on US version. Can we expect it would be possible on 6P too?
I'd like to know this too. If its possible to activate band 28 on the US version for use in Australia by flashing a different radio (Are all the required amps and antenna things there)
I need band 3, 7 & 28 for LTE
Might not be possible , could be a different version of the radio chip that they use for the other version. would be nice if its as easy as just flashing radios but tend to think it will be more hardware
I was hoping this was possible as well! If it was and one wanted to flash a different radio do you need to unlock the bootloader to do this?
Thanks,
M

Yes you need a bootloader unlock to flash radios

most of us are still getting our phones..give it a couple weeks
1) Anyone know if the radio-angler-angler-02.15.img contains ALL radios?
2) If I travel from US to Italy/Germany/Japan will flashing that Image get it done or will I need to do something else?
The US version of the Nexus will work in those countries except Japan without any extra work.

Am I right in thinking that if a specific band (i.e. 20, which isn't on the US version) isn't present the phone will simply use another band? Granted, this might not be LTE but still decent speeds.

Just check what radio frequency uses your carrier and check if it is available in the US model.
But if you buy it in the US, the price plus tax, plus shipping, plus tax in Europe, not worth it. Almost about the same price. Unless you have someone to bring it to you and you dont have to pay shipping nor europe tax.

World S8/8+ = 4gb RAM 64gb ROM -vs- China S8/8+ = 6gb RAM 128gb ROM

Ouch! Why will there be a difference?
"China to Get High-End Version of Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM & 128GB ROM"
Could it be that the market has more competitive Phone choices?
I was looking for the 128Gb version because I kept seeing it would be released and the only version Tmobile is releasing is the 64Gb version. Seemed odd.
I think its retarded too, they should of just sold one model (6GB RAM/128GB) worldwide. When I had a Mate 9, I had to buy the CHN version for 6/128 compared to the normal 4/64. I might have to do it again if the CHN version supports all of TMO LTE bands. One thing I've experienced with CHN vs US phones is I get better reception with the US version even though the CHN supports all of TMO bands.
It's costs, it's probably cheaper over there, the price increase for 6gb/128gb in the UK would make the S8+ nearly 1000 quid!!!!!
Don't know what's going on... I'm in China and will hopefully grab one once they are up for sale... Worries me that there are no pre orders yet. Also... Needs to have an exact HK variant. If they aren't the same model as the HK variant, then I won't be able to exchange firmware, and then there is no way I will put myself through the torture of a phone without Google.NO WAY! I guess I'd wait until summer to pick up the 4gb version in my home country... Probably the metaphorical smoke will have cleared by then and things will have calmed down a bit to see what battery life is like. Worried I'll purchase another battery lemon like what happened to my 6p... Man, that battery died in a year and a bit.

Chinese model = no warranty so thats a deal breaker for me
6GB vs 4GB RAM you probably wont notice the difference in real world use
You can buy a 128GB SD card for much less than the difference in RRP between world and chinese models
Finally will the chinese model support the LTE bands required for your region and carrier?
Too many unknowns for me
it my have a global modem that supports all bands (bar cdma in the sd 835). agree, you wont notice much of a difference between 4/6 gb...
Will 6gb affect battery life in a negative way? I still doubt this will happen, but nonetheless, don't mind investigating thoughts on this matter.
Things to remember if you get the CHN version is no warranty, stuck on CHN ROM unless you root and install a different ROM and possible no wifi calling if your US carrier supports it.

I agree that being stuck on CHN firmware is a horror show if you are not a Mandarin/Chinese language user.
From another perspective, so long as there is a HK firmware for SAME model number, you should be able to change firmware to HK firmware from CHN Firmware using ODIN. Pretty simple process. I have managed to do this on several Samsung phones no worries. Only with the C7 (2016) did I recently come across some weirdness that was solved by an XDA member who prescribed a relatively painless ordering of ODIN processes.
However, Samsung used to have weird China only models that did not have a HK firmware variant... which completely sucked - My Note 4, SN-9108v was a horrible experience due to this firmware and model isolation practice. Also, there are some phones that are only sold in China and only come again with Chinese Firmware (possibly the C9 pro (2017) is an example - can't remember). If Samsung have chosen the same isolationist Chinese model practice for s8, then avoid it like the plague... You'll be buying into a joyless and expensive sans google experience that will only be tolerable with decent Mandarin skills to enjoy the plethora of Chinese app store equivalents to google.
At this stage, I cannot find any reliable links to Chinese and HK model numbers. Perhaps a Chinese based Mandarin XDA user can clarify. I am very interested in preordering this mythical Chinese s8+, but I am not in the industry and am a little time poor in terms of being able to research this. There certainly seems to be very little reputable information (in English) or easily found reputable information (via translate) that details exactly when or how pre-orders in China or HK will operate. Just unsubstantiated re-reported links and news stories about the 6Gb variant and blah blah blah.
Would be really great to hear from someone legitimately more informed than me in this matter.
Cheers!

128gb available in Korea ... interesting. Fingers crossed this type of deal pops up in China (and importantly, HK).
SM-G955NZKESKO/
That is because China has many local brands provide adequate device with only one third price. If you can maximum your specks. You will fail there!
Nope. I'm off the Sammy train. Thinking Xperia xz premium
Read an article that says Samsung is mulling over bringing the 6Gb to the US and other markets besides China / Korea. If this happens I would like to know who made the original not to release in other markets so I can kick then in the nuts.
I don't care if it is 4GB or 6. Just so long as it is NOT Snapdragon. Speed tests seem to already be confirming that the typical $#!++y ram management is still present in the Snapdragon S8 and S8+ phones. Also; If I were to buy the Snapdragon model, I would not be able to activate mobile hot spot on Cricket. You can with International phones (Exynos).
I wonder how much extra battery the 6gb version uses. I remember the ram upgrade ont he Uni used to eat battery.

So I'm not too thrilled about the 6 GB/64 GB version we're apparently getting in Canada, and am seriously considering getting an 8 GB/128 GB version on eBay, but I'm concerned about it being a Taiwanese SKU/serial.
Does anyone have any experience or thoughts as to whether it would work in Canada, if updates would come properly, etc - or better still if I could just flash it to the NA version on arrival, etc.? Thanks!

I am also super interested in the ability get an 8 GB version working on Verizon. If someone knows for sure a flash would get the correct bands and it's not a hardware issue, that would be terrific.
Buying the 8/256GB RAM/storage version in Europe.
At the moment I am only able to find this phone available for purchase in Sweden with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Does anyone know if a version with the highest specs will be available in the future? Why aren't the phone available with all options in every country? Where can I go to get a version with better specs?

From my testing, the unlocked version will pick up Verizon LTE bands but calls fail since there is no VoLTE option on the phone. Did not pick up any of their 3G signals, and their system would not accept my IMEI as a compatible device. So it may work if you can convince Verizon to add the phone to their system, which is unlikely since they already have their own version.
FWIW I also tried it with a Sprint SIM, but got no service whatsoever and their system would not accept the IMEI. Thew in a Cricket/AT&T SIM and the phone worked as expected.

Which LTE Bands are you getting?
I'm on T-Mobile,seems we only have Band 2 support on the WW unlocked 8GB/128 GB Model.
I've already initiated a return w/the e-Bay seller,more than likely,it's going back tomorrow.
I'd been OK with Bands 2 & 4,which are listed here:

The fact that they let this .pdf out & it's not even accurate speaks volumes for North American support:Tone-Deaf would be a compliment...............

I was able to get service on 4 and 13 for Verizon, and 2 and 12 for Cricket/AT&T. It may support more, but I'm not aware of any apps that will let me scan for service on all bands. LTE Discovery mentioned a "Potential eCSFB issue" with the Verizon SIM which is likely because there was no CDMA support.
Fun fact... apparently the phone supports XLTE with Verizon, which led to a rather depressing speed test compared to my service with Cricket.

THX!,just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same model phone.
I'm gonna give it one more day,get around town & see if the connectivity is OK.
If spotty (w/Band 2 only) ,I'm sending it back,or,selling it on Swappa.
Outside of sparse LTE Band support,it's a nice phone,I really don't wanna part w/it so soon after getting it.
Haven't tried out the AR/VR Capabilities yet, but,I do like the display & the speaker quality/loudness.
TBH,I'm covered in WI-FI Most of the time, but,I did expect better LTE Band support nevertheless, especially for a DualSIM/Unlocked phone.
The fact that it's being sold on Amazon as-is seems to be Asus shooting themselves in the foot, certainly there'll be quite a few returns, once people find out connectivity is less than ideal for an unlocked phone, one that is marketed to the US/North America.
Update on mine, battery life is getting better now as the phone settles in. NOT impressed with Data though. I was in the country yesterday, my ASUS Zenpad had 2 bars of 4G and the Zenfone was in roam. Everything else is great, and living without root is bearable, I guess. Fortunately, my 7 year high score on Klondike is an X-Box Live/Google Play game and the score were carried over from the X Box cloud. I know that sounds silly but 7 years over multiple devices is a long time to build up a high score and was a major stress point going to a locked down device

Moto E4 US vs EU

Can anyone point out the differences between the US and the EU version?
I have te feeling the only look similar but are completely different on the inside. Qualcomm vs Mediatek.
Since Mediatek doesn't publish it's kernel sources there will be no custom kernel for the EU version. Am I right?
I have had the opportunity to test the EU version in a store. I noticed some holes on the back for a speaker? on the back, something that looked like notification LED? (or was it the light sensor) on the top right front.
Also the camera's and even battery life could be different since the chipset is different.
Is the US version better than the EU version?
Better for what? Battery life? Performance? There's no way to know until people test it.
I have the US Verizon Prepaid Version of the phone. I believe it's pretty much the same as the regular US unlocked version. In a previous post in this thread I discussed a problem I was having with a specific game and it not displaying certain graphics. Nobody with the international version was able to reproduce the issue. There was also a difference in some of the options in the settings menu (IE MEMORY Option missing from the main settings menu ((I later discovered where it was hidden.))

Yes the US has the Snapdragon 425, and 426(Sprint) I know the Indian one has mediatek I don't know what the EU models have.
Also from review the Indian models have metal body builds
It's weird only the Sprint version has the Snapdragon 427. The Sprint version has no fingerprint sensor based on the photos on their website. See the attached photo. According to the comparison of the 425 vs 427 on Qualcomm's website (scroll to almost bottom of page), the 427 has a faster modem and QuickCharge 3.0 (2.0 on 425).

I have the US version of moto e4. It is a pretty good phone. The system is very fast (Android 7.1.1 with May 1, 2017 security patch), the gps modem is quite sensitive for the price. It has most of the sensors except NFC, IR blaster, thermometer and barometer. I checked the compatibility with EU networks. The problem is that it supports only B7 (2600 MHz) LTE band (no B3 or B20 support), so in the cities the phone can achieve 4G speed, but at the countryside you may have just 3G (HSPA) or 3G+ (HSPA+) speed, which is enough for reading emails, news, using google maps and waze or getting weather information. But do not organize a video conference with that phone somewehere at the europian countryside.

Moto E4 does not formally support quick charge spec. However, stock kernel enables rapid charging with uptake rates approaching 2000 mAh under ideal conditions. Can use any suitably sized charge brick and high quality cable. Unfortunately, the charger included with most US retail units tops out at 4W/0.8A. Good for overnight charging but not a quick boost.

New motherboard

So my motherboard is toast (yes, I'm positive) and I'm shopping around for a used one. Since I'm pretty sure all versions of the S8 use the same internal layout & connectors I can probably put any version motherboard in as its replacement.
That being said, which model motherboard would be my best bet for the following:
-Must support T Mobile USA (all the bands they utilize) if unlocked
-Has the best ROM support
a third bonus would be having great worldwide band support since I travel, given it's already covered my first requirement (having all t mo band support).
Thanks.
Well your kinda hindered a little bit because you have to go for the snapdragon variant of the board.
There is root but there are issues with it, and as far as I know not many people are developing roms for the snapdragon variant.
Also the snapdragon variant probably isn't going to work world wide, just like the exynos version doesn't support American bands, the US variant won't work in European countries

I have a s8+ G955FD international version, apparently my motherboard died when i was charging my phone, somebody told me that i have to replace the motherboard but looking online the "FD" version it's very hard to find and also very expensive, any recomendations that i can do, can i replace it with a diferent version of the motherboard or i have to stay with the "FD" version?
