Lag - NOOK Tablet 7" Questions & Answers

Am I the only one with serious lag issues with this device? I know it's a cheap, underpowered device, but sometimes it's like totally unusable. Especially Chrome and Google. Takes so long to load pages, and when they do load, I can't scroll. It freezes, and then it'll execute the command several seconds or minutes (sure feels like it) later. Seriously? Chrome isn't that heavy, is it?
Actually, everything is really slow. But some apps are just so unacceptably slow. I get a lot of "_____ isn't responding. Would you like to stop it?" messages. Often times it's Process System.
I can handle a bit of lag, like when changing apps or something. But to have it just freeze all the time is just frustratingly unacceptable.
I've tried disabling animations. But I found that it didn't really help. And I really like seeing the beautiful, modern animations. Another tip @dokihara mentioned was to reduce resolution. But I'm not sure if I want to do that. So I haven't tried it.

Seriously, is it really supposed to be this slow? My little boy bought it for me so I will keep it because I love him and he was so happy to give it to me. It's so slow that it's unusable. Is there any other solutions? My nexus is way faster and it's almost 5 years old.

Is stuttering while scrolling through lists normal for android phones?

I'm new to android phones. In fact, other than reading about them, my only experience with them is playing with the evo 4g for about 10 minutes. I was surprised at the significant stuttering while trying to scroll through lists. It made navigating the sprint tv application very very frustrating. Scrolling through the browser settings was also very annoying because of the stutter. Is this normal for android phones? Is it normal for the evo? Is there some way to fix it?
Right now I have an iphone 3g. I'm not happy with having to jailbreak my iphone just to get some basic functionality that I need. I'm afraid that with the iphone 4 won't even be able to turn on a jail broken phone without plugging it into a computer, so I really am looking for an android device, but this scrolling stutter might be a deal breaker, if it is normal.
Demo models are always torn up and not typical.
I really don't have any lag but I'm also rooted, removed the bloat and have a great task manager installed.
the nexus never stuttered. not a single step. the evo tends to. i think it has something to do with the bloatware that htc and sprint have filled it up with.
could be the 30 fps bug. the device is locked at displaying 30 frames per second so things could be choppy. that's the second thing i noticed about the phone. first was how fuzzy everything looked - i upgraded from a droid so that could be the reason.
I don't think its the 30fps bug. 30 fps would be perfectly acceptable. This is a stutter, not just slow frame rate.
If you're coming from an iPhone I can see how the scrolling would bother you. The iPhone is consistently 60fps in the UI at almost all times, does not suffer the choppiness of the Android UI when scrolling lists or applications. Restoring the 60fps target + Froyo should get the Android UI experience up to acceptable levels in my opinion.
It's the live wallpapers that make my app list stutter. I turned it off and it's smooth now.

OMGG stop blaming a 30fps cap for the phone being laggy AT ALL. Its like every single forum if someone brings something up about the phone freezing, lagging, glitching, or not working. Some random person says "its probably because the 30fps cap". Thats not going to stop things from scrolling all in one motion.
But like others have said here, its most likely just because its a demo phone and there might of been a lot of things running. Since most people dont know how to operate android devices they dont close the program and just open everything and anything. Also htc/sprint put a lot on to the phone and bog it down. The phone will be more then operational without rooting, but if you do root, you can give the phone a big increase in speed.
The 'performance improving' ROMs seem to have a great placebo effect.
The phone stutters regardless of what rom you use. The EVO 4G is a laggy phone. It is very unimpressive.
Having sprint bloatware taking up space in your phone's flash memory does not affect performance. It is not taking up ram unless it's running, and even if it is, it will get reclaimed automatically by the operating system as needed.

I seem to disagree with u there. My EVO hasnt choked once. Yeah, its a little jittery with LWP running, but without the LWP, my EVO is as smooth as can be. Not one complaint.

I'm coming from an iphone 3g which had no UI lag. Opening and closing apps took longer though. Scrolling, switching homescreens, and especially scrolling the apps list seems extremely laggy on the Evo..
Try launcher pro if you refuse to root and use the custom roms.
I have virtually zero lag and free memory is always over 200 mb
I'll agree, I just came from an iPhone 3gs and one of the first things I noticed was that the Evo wasn't as smooth. I really like the OS but the scrolling needs to be fixed.
Sent from my HTC Evo using tapatalk.
Hell... I came from an iphone 2G and it scrolls smoother than my evo.
I really think it's the refresh rate.
I had a Nexus One and never noticed the stutter, though some of my iPhone-toting friends did. But the second I updated to Froyo and everything was much faster and more responsive, I could notice how much slower scrolling and switching screens on 2.1 devices was. It's just a matter of what you're used to.
I get some stuttering when scrolling. My Hero (which I still have) doesn't do this. Strange thing is that sometimes I do not see this stuttering and it's smooth as butter. My thought is that something in the background is running and eating up CPU time.
Live wallpapers seem to make a huge difference in how smooth and regular the touch screen refreshes (like scrolling). I don't have big problems with preinstalled live wallpapers by Android and HTC, but when using most downloaded live wallpapers, the difference is noticable - for example, Galactic Core and RedEye Scanner live wallpapers make scrolling noticeably choppier.
This doesn't seem to happen as much with Nexus One I have access to. I think it might the combination of the 30fps cap and the Sense UI.
Well my plan now is to wait until the iPhone 4 is jailbroken. If the evo's stutter is fixed to the point that it is like other android phones, I'll buy the evo. Of not, I'll get the iPhone unless there's a new option on sprint or AT&T.
I should say that I don't buy that the stutter is due to the 30fps cap. I know what 30fps looks like. The scroll stutter/lag hurts useability. A smooth 30fps wouldn't.
It doesn't stutter unless your running certain live wallpapers. If you use a regular wallpaper there is no stuttering. This is not a problem with EVO as I had same problem on my Nexus but after the update to froyo everything was silky smooth even with live wallpapers. So my suggestion is if it bothers you just use a regular wallpaper until froyo drops on the EVO.

Replacement phone

Talked to head of Samsung mobile in Norway today. We agreed on a direct replacement phone, and if that doesn't solve the lag (which he says he has only heard about once...) I will get a complete refund. Hope this helps (not much hope though), or else I will go for the refund and a DHD.

seriously? they test with no apps - text and make calls only ?!
I guess everyone with `lag` of some sort or another is imagining it..... Not good Samsung.
Exactly. My impression too. But he claims that "every" sales person in Samsung has it and uses it with "no" problem. Just too unbelievable to me... As you say they probably only have 10 apps and use the phone for texting and calling and probably mail...
Hey to be honnest i've only had significant lag with one version (JPK was horrible to be honnest, but i didn't factory reset or wipe cache after flash)... different notions of lag, maybe i'm really lenient. exept for opening the widget menu in the homescreen, that took ages, worse for adding applications.
what do you guys refer to as lag?
My lag is from 2-30 seconds when opening apps. Sometimes unlocking the phones takes 5-10 seconds. Especially noticeable if apps are not already in RAM. It also happens that it freezes for minutes.
On a friends HTC desire similar navigational tasks are more or less INSTANT!

wow yea that's hardcore. I've never ever had such bad lag issues. I mean 2sec is ok-ish in my books, but 30sec is just too much.
It would be interesting to see a comparison of the two phones running the same apps. I knew that when i used to use a taskiller it would slow me down a lot. Some apps messed up my speed.

[Q] Touchwiz lag can't be THIS bad - faulty model perhaps?

Hey guys, picked up the new S5 mainly because I really didn't like the camera on the M7, and actually missed the warm un-inspiring plastic of my S3, but one thing I new I wouldn't like is TouchWiz.
Now I'm really confused as to who has been experiencing lag or not, a lot of websites say there is none, some say there is a lot, but I haven't really seen a conclusive post on XDA.
My phone lags a LOT - like sometimes if I'm typing there will be a half-second stutter whilst it recomposes itself, if I am scrolling a lot there also might be a half second hiccup, even swiping through app draws/recent apps can sometimes cause this stutter.
It a massive step back from the buttery-smooth Jelly Bean/Kit Kat I'm used to on AOSP ROMS or even Sense, but I was just wondering if this may mean my model is faulty.
Whilst you may be thinking, a half second here or there? Chill out bro! - there is one section that I know CANT be right - the camera/gallery!
My camera can take a good 5 seconds to start up sometimes, burst shots have a good 5 second delay, and generally my pictures dont look as great as I was expecting - as if the focusing doesn't do its job properly.
Sometimes after takign a picture the camera app can hang for up to 5/10 seconds or even require me to switch out and back in again - and the GALLERY IS HORRIBLE. The gallery is taking >5 seconds to boot from the camera screen and hiccups the most when swiping through.
I tried an Antutu test just to see if I was underperforming, hit 34k when other S5's hit 36k but don't really think it's all that relevant.
Anyone else with similar experiences? Is my phone perhaps faulty or shall I just suck it up until hopefully a GPE ROM comes out (PLEASE INCLUDE ULTRA POWER SAVING MODE GOOGLE/SAMSUNG - it's the only TW bloat I really like!)?
Cheers guys, it's been a while since I was last here!
nobody?
Mine can be pretty damn slow sometimes too. Try going into developer options and disabling all transitions and animations.
That might help it be a bit speedier

does this help chrome usage heat/performance?

I just want some feedback if this helps anyone else or makes a difference for anyone else. It seems to for me, I want to make sure its not placebo/different usage. Heat seems to be less, performance so far seems to be better.
Its just turning off Network Action Predictions in chrome settings/advanced/privacy.
Been messing around with this off, scrolling currently butter smooth in chrome on all sites, 6 tabs open, all stall loaded when switching back and forth no reloads, yet- hardly any heat. Well see if its a fluke or actually helps. Sometimes this device decieves me.

Well, if its placebo its a very good one because I could swear you just made my Chrome much smoother while scrolling.
Edit: the reloading while switching tabs is still there, but much, MUCH faster.
Now, if I could say the same while switching apps... *sigh*
I just gave this a try and it did make a difference in tab reloading.
I was able to open 7 tabs without reloading compared to 4 tabs before this.
Didn't notice any difference in scrolling (which was very smooth for me anyway).
PS. I'm using adblock plus for android too which helps a lot.

Thanks a lot! Haven't a problem with heat, but performance definitely is better and even pages are loading faster.

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the OnePlus 6 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Device is incredibly smooth. It seems like 60 fps in nearly all applications I've went through so far.
The only good phones I've ever used before this have been U11, View10 and that's it.
Scrolling is head and shoulders above them.
Literally smooooooth AF
Facing the scroll and touch issue
Sometimes scrolling is laggy, sometimes it stutters, sometimes it moves too fast when i scrolled it slowly.
Scrolling has been choppy since day 1 for me. There is small microstutter.

Yup. The problem is, not everyone can see that. For instance, I said in an article that the Play Store (one example) is jittery/stuttery when scrolling up/down in pretty much every 'corner of the app. People thought I was trolling. And my eyes perceive those stutters as relatively obvious ones. I don't understand how people can't see that. Then there's Twitter. If people can't see that Twitter stutters like crazy, then I don't know what else to say. I don't think the OP6 is smoother than the Pixel 2XL, even though that one's a generation behind. Imagine how good the Pixel 3 is gonna be.

Yeah. Most people probably don't notice it, but my eyes are very sensitive to it. I game on a 165 Hz G-sync monitor and I still notice microstutter at high frame rates lol. I wonder how havoc os or lineage os is? Maybe it's just the OS and not the device causing it.

Of course the device is not the cause. It's the software that facilitates the appearance of these jitters/stutters. It's all about optimization.
I only got one issue with stuttering. That was on day one, when camera application stuttered and crashed. After that everything went fine. That probably because I had two camera apps. One of device and one installed from Play Store.

Same here with the 165hz gsync and very sensitive eyes.. Thus far I haven't noticed any stutters on the device yet been using Instagram, telegram and chrome but nothing so far on latest update.
If I compare my s7 edge that was just a nightmare of stutters.
Yup I get stuttering here, similar to my 3 back in the day. I wonder if tweaking the cpu governor has the same effects as it did on my 3. There is no "conservative" selection anymore.
O notice in some apps now. Not in chrome or Samsung browser (use it for better battery for some reason..)
But apps like Instagram (when loading pictures)
And also play store (most likely loading something too)
I'm thinking it's more about poorly designed apps rather that the device itself.
It seems that scrolling smoothness took a hit after the Pie update, many apps (including chrome) seem to stutter a lot for me.

Absolutely true. I just couldn't take it anymore and decided to install the latest Open Beta build, considering that Beta 3 was pretty smooth overall. And yes, Beta 4 is smoother than stable Pie. I don't get how the initial stable Pie build managed to make it to the masses in such a state. For the past few days, the experience on my phone was utter s#!t. I'll stay on Open Beta until things get better on 'stable Pie.
Is there scroll stutter on pie-based LOS and Havoc OS or is it limited to OOS only?

Same here... spontaneous framedrops/stutter whiles scrolling, very annoying. Beta3 felt a lot smoother to me!
Every second day have to reboot phone into recovery to wipe cache. Reason being, I'm completely unable to type anything correctly when entering text.
Recent apps lag
Hello everyone,
I'm experiencing some stutter and lags with my One Plus 6. For exempe, if I scroll quickly trough the recent apps in the multitask, I can see some frame drops and it's very annoying. I don't understand why...It should work extremely fluessly with a Snapdragon 845. Are some people having the same issue here ?
Thank you so much !
The only way I've found of stopping the stuttering and poor scrolling is for to go to developer options and set the background process limit to "at most, 4 process"

I to have this problem. Scrolling would be smooth then suddenly the frames drop for a short time. This happens randomly. :/
