I own a ZTE Axon 7 2017U Prototype/Pre-Production. Ask me anything. - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

I own one of the ZTE Axon 7 pre-production/prototype phone. You can ask me anything, but I may choose not to answer your question if I think it is a sensitive question. I attached a few pictures below and the noticeable difference is this phone come with on-screen keys instead of capacitive keys.
To begin, I was one of the few ZTE Axon 7 Beta Tester back in April 2016 (I do not work for ZTE). I received this phone one-two months before they officially announce it in China on May 2016. I returned this phone to the company before I left the USA for my summer vacation in May. On October, this phone was given to me from one of the employees in ZTE upper-level management.
This phone is my daily driver and I love it! To clarify, the phone that I have is 2017U and have 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM.

How did you become a beta tester for ZTE?
Can you install an ordinary A7 firmware on this phone?
And which firmware version/build did you get initially?
Thanks.

The phone was running Android 6 when I first got it. It's just the same build as that you guys have. I was pretty worry when I was trying to upgrade to Android 7 during February since this phone is a little bit different because of the on screen key. However, I'm able to upgrade to the latest firmware like everyone has without issue. I do not root this phone due to the fact that Android has been getting to a point that I can do everything I want my installing app. When I started using Android 2.0, I had to root to get everything I want.
It started one day in BetaBound. I tested one of ZTE's low end devices. After that, I was contacted by them (targeted) to test a "premium device", which is A7. I don't do a lot testing. In 2016, I tested Axon 7 and Netgear Orbi (they contacted me like 9 months prior launch).

What about Axon 8? Have you tested this?

No, different SOC and kernel, the Axon 7 and Axon 7 Mini only share a name, otherwise they are completely different devices.
Patience, if it sells well enough and after ZTE releases the kernel source code we will see some activity... how much will vary on how well it sells, but when it's on sale for $199 it's a serious bargain and hopefully some devs will snag it up and bring some basic root/roms to the device.
With off-brand and low volume devices this will likely become less and less common though, with Marshmallow and newer OS's root and romming is being much more difficult. Even chainfire (primary developer of SuperSU) has said rooting stock devices probably won't even be an option within 2 to 3 years, and that the reality is Google could shut down all known rooting methods if they wanted too (which, luckily that doesn't seem to be a priority for them, or even on their radar at the moment).
id say no and it doesn't look like there will be much if any development at all on the mini. id just buy the regular axon 7.

New 5X Owner Here - Updating to Android 7.1.2 Now (Beta Program)

I'm not sure if this is news or not, but my Nexus 5X is updating to Android 7.1.2 Beta as I type this. I have seen articles stating that the Nexus 6P is getting the 7.1.2 Beta, but nothing on the 5X.
I stuck with the Nexus 6 for two years and loved it! I'm actually missing it in some ways. I picked up a New Sealed Carbon 32GB Nexus 5 X off eBay for $280 shipped, I've had it for two weeks now. I wouldn't call it a big "upgrade" but I am loving the fingerprint sensor and far superior camera! I wanted something a little smaller too so it is nice to be able to (easily) operate my phone one handed again. The 5.2" display is perfect for me. I'm not too worried about the whole "bootloop plague" with the Nexus 5X because the person I bought it from on eBay just received it from Google as a replacement for his 5X which was plagued by the infamous "bootloop". I would hope that Google wouldn't be replacing effected devices with potentially effected devices.
I use to be a "flashaholic" and loved trying out new custom ROMs. I stuck with Pure Nexus in the end. Now I'm happy just running Stock Android and stick to that. I use Android Pay daily (I've been out of the modding scene for a while, not sure if they worked around the whole Unlocked Bootloader / Rooted / ROMd and Android Pay dilemma) so that is a big part of why I just stay stock. It is good to know that the 5X has great dev support though so I'll have something to fall back on when Google abandons the 5X.
I'll update soon on what I think of 7.1.2 and any actual noticeable differences if anyone is interested.

My phone says that I have 4.31GB of data used on my sdcard. There is no way I should have that much, I only have a few apps downloaded and no games or media. Does anyone else notice a big chunk of data being used for no reason? I tried the Pixel ROM (which warns that there could be a 3GB file left on the sdcard) before flashing the Beta 7.1.2, but I clean flashed the Beta via the bootloader, which should have completely wiped the internal storage. I have tried looking for a big file, but can't find one. Any ideas would be appreciated.
The system uses nearly that much.

Android System takes about 4GBs that why. Before the update if remember correctly didn't show all phone's memory (with android system). e.g. On my nexus 5x 16GB on android 7.1.1 it was showing used 3.7GBs of 10.67GBs, now it says 7.7GB of 14.68GBs.
Look at the picture that I've attached.

I meant to say that I had 4GB of Apps. I ended up clean flashing back to 7.1.1 and when I first booted the phone there was only a few hundred MB's of Apps. After I downloaded all of my must have apps, I checked again and sure enough, I have about 4GB of Apps downloaded. I think it's mostly Pocket Casts and the downloaded podcasts. I'm not used to a 16GB phone, it's been so long since I've had to keep an eye on my storage.
Thanks anyway for the reply:good:

Axon 7 US 6g 128gb - NFC

Does anyone have the US 128g 6g ram version of this phone? No one has been able to confirm that Android pay works with this model. Me and some others have tried and failed. All are on the stock software 7.1.1.
Has anyone used NFC and Android pay with this particular model of the Axon 7?
ZTE did not implement NFC, OTG, or MHL in the Axon or Zmax lines.

Well I've used Android Beam a lot of times, NFC works perfectly. can't talk about Pay though
Android pay works on the 4 Gig model with 64 gig of memory. The issue is with the 6 gig model with 128 gig of memory. If anyone has this model and can try out Android pay, it would be very much appreciated.

NFC is there and works like a charm. Used Android Beam with a friend's OP3T a bunch of times
OTG has saved me once on a pretty nasty brick. Even knowing that, I downloaded a couple of OTG compatibility tester apps and they both tell that it works.
MHL, in the other hand, isn't supported. Some say that this DisplayLink thingy can work, but I'm not sure if they tested.

I have the 6GB/128GB model of the A7 and I can't get Android Pay to work either. I have tried it at Trader Joe's and Walgreens and it just sat here and did nothing. I even went to a friend's coffee shop and he rung up something for $1.00 so I could try it. It didn't work and I know he supports Android Pay. I was moving my phone all around on his terminal and it would never go thru. He said, "Why are you doing all that?" Then he took his own Android phone and it went thru like a charm. Something isn't right with this phone.
Yes, I *DID* have NFC turned on.
Thanks for your reply. Let's hear from ZTE on this! Must be a software fix for this!

There was a new version of Android Pay that came out few days ago. I haven't had a chance to try it again since installing the update. Have you?
Did not try it. I called ZTE and was told that this is a known issue and a software patch is in the works. No ETA on the patch however.
Hopefully that is a true statement.

Same here. Big miss if they don't get this done on their current flagship device in my opinion. I'll follow up periodically and see what updates are available.

We're very sorry for the delay. I was hoping I would have a solution for you. We've reached out to our Research and Development Team, and we have not yet gotten a resolution to this issue that our Axon 7 Enhanced consumers are experiencing. It should work, as it does in the 64GB Axon 7 device. We do have a post in our community forum operated by our R&D team, where you're welcome to post and interact with them. We're working a fix, however, I am unable to speculate when we will have more information available. As soon as we have additional information, I will update you all. Thank you for your continued patience as we strive to resolve the issue with the chip.

Thanks for the update. I would certainly expect the next update, or security patch would include a fix for this issue. That's a very reasonable request to make for the current flagship mobile phone from ZTE.
ZTE has found the problem and it exist on the Premium version of the phone. They will be fixing it in the next update.

What are the alternatives for buying a brand new ZTE Axon 7?

Hello. I've previously owned the Axon 7 Mini, which unfortunately was run over by a car. It was a nice phone and I especially liked the design and audio capabilities. Nowadays all smartphones look rather dull to me.
What would be the best/cheapest place to buy a new Axon 7? I've found a Chinese site that supposedly sells these. They don't offer the original box, though. Here's a link to the product: (can't seem to post a link but it's on Aliexpress) - thoughts? It's just over 200 dollars there, but a whooping 600 dollars at Amazon.
Questions: With these special ROMs that are circulating, will things like online banking work? I've heard of phones with special ROMs that have problems with certain apps because of security issues...
My understanding is that people can effectively run Android 10 on Axon 7 - that would be neat. If everything works, that is...
Thanks in advance.
I can't even post an image? Seriously?
As much as I like my Axon 7, things have moved on and I wouldn't buy another.
If you want to do online banking etc, just get something good stock and don't fiddle. Keep it as secure as possible and leave it locked.
I'm contemplating replacing my A7 as I need better battery life. Facebook is using it up too fast now. I did replace the battery and it works fine but I'm wanting something with 4000MAh or better.
I have a work Galaxy S10e and that is quite a good phone but again, that smaller battery is limiting.
If the US wasn't waging war on Huawei I would probably get a Mate or P 30 or similar but now without GAPPS I just won't go there.
Semi seriously looking at alternatives but thinking of going anti China this time. Samsung, LG, ASUS, not sure yet. HTC are pretty much dead and don't seem interested anymore.
I currently have a Huawei P Smart. I live in Norway btw, so I don't know what this supposed 'war' with Huawei is about.
I especially like the Axon 7 because of the speakers and audio capabilities.
I really would just like a recommendation for where to buy a brand new Axon 7.
Slim pickings finding unsold new stock out there. You will have to search around and not be fussy on colour.

Both authentic global A2017...I use a Chinese variant in the UK and have never had issues. Ali price is very good at £185. Still a cracking phone for the money but just be aware that it is now vintage HW and for a bit more you could probably get something better[emoji106]
Whatever I get after the Axon 7 will have stereo speakers so that cuts down options quite drastically but I certainly wouldn't get another Axon just to keep the speakers. I would mainly want to do it for a big battery but would welcome a bit more processing power, RAM and storage with newer OS as I like to be more up to date on security using Google pay, phone banking etc.
To be honest, the work S10e would be fine if it were slightly wider and have a bigger battery, so maybe I need a S10+?
Oh well, my decision has come. I stumbled upon a great deal on Huawei Mate 20 Pro today. New, unopened in box from store. Lovely phone.
Been doing the updates up to Android 10.
Don't care about rooting etc so no bootloader unlock is of zero concern. My Axon 7 has never been unlocked.
Edit: My Axon 7 was in a drawer. I kept it because of the excellent audio performance and it still worked perfectly well but my eldest daughter needed a phone. Having replaced the battery in it not too long ago it should have a pretty decent life left in it so she has bought it from me.
Good luck with your A7 everyone.
How about the ZTE Axon 20 5g? Sure it won't be released here but you can buy it anyway. It looks sweet and it's the same price as the 10 when it came out. If someone can shoehorn Lineage on it I'm going to buy it.

If I flash OREO custom ROM, will my Note 4 still represent as marshmallow in Play Store ?

Hi friends,
Background: I have DirecTV Streaming Service for my home because it offers 5.1 surround.
I HAD their mobile app on my Sprint Note 4 but before Sprint was purchased by T-Mo I was prompted to update the app in the Play Store.
When I tried a dialog popped up saying that my Android 6 Marshmallow phone was no longer compatible and that DirecTV Stream now required Android 7, Android 8 recommended.
If I successfully flash an OREO 8.1 ROM will the Play Store permit me to update my app or will they see that I am a Note 4 and deny me ?
And although YTTV/Hulu etc apps still work on Marshmallow they have poor audio for my home surround system .
No, it will only see the actual version of Android.
I actually flashed CRDROID Oreo 8.1 and was then able to download the latest apk from the playstore.
Installed and ran perfectly...
BUT, my WIFI connection repeatedly disconnected.
So did my bluetooth.
And my S-Pen was neutered.
Battery life abysmal.
Also, OREO was simply baffling to me.
Nothing like the Marshmallow that I am used to.
I wish that there was a way to "spoof" my android version and APPEAR as Nougat 7.
The Note 4 itself proved that it can run the app A-OK.
When Sprint died I just assumed that the latest Samsung offering would be better than my 7 year old phone.
So I bought a brand new A52 in August 21.
$450.00 wasted.
I hate it.
Stupid aspect-ratio results in black bands while streaming.
The display IS an inch wider (in landscape mode), 6.7 inches vs 5.7 inches.
BUT, considerably shorter (in landscape mode) which translates to LESS screen area.
As a result, typing is nearly impossible on the diminished keyboard.
No replaceable battery.
No S-Pen.
Overall, a big step BACKWARD !
<rant off>

Thanks pal...I have only flashed the OREO I mentioned so I am a very green newbie.
I have seen positive comments about Pixel so I will give it a shot.
Android 9 > 8. Any apps for 8 will work on 9 (or 10 and 11 and so on)
Hi Gang,
I thought that I'd update my results for those who are interested.
I eventually got comfortable flashing the Custom ROMs/GApps and tried many variants from 7(Nougat) up to Lineage 18.1(Android 11).
I tried a Pixel Experience package with included GApps that was very nice but on THIS particular ROM the DTVS(DirecTV Stream) APK would not install.
I suspect that the very comprehensive included GApps somehow betrayed my device's true identity.
All the other ROMs that I successfully flashed permitted the installation of the DTVS APK and it streamed flawlessy on each of them.
I do not understand why Marshmallow 6.0.1 is no longer considered sufficient.
Anyway, in the end I was really enjoying CRDroid 10 but something I had not considered made this entire exercise moot.
My home has terrible cellular reception and WIFI-Calling is indispensible for phone connnections.
What I had not realized was that WIFI-Calling is associated with each carrier's customization and cannot be incorporated into Custom ROMs as it is closely held proprietary information.
And so I have returned to the stock T-MO ROM I started out with.
Like anyone else I must be able to reliably contact emergency services for police, fire, medical, etc.
So my current solution is to leave my Mint Mobile SIM Card installed in the Note 4 while I am at home.
And if I wish to stream DTVS(via cellular) while I am out and about I must transfer the SIM to my Huawei Mate 10 which runs EMUI 12 (Android10).
It lacks WIFI Calling so it cannot be my home phone, BUT, it streams DTVS perfectly on a nice 16:9 display (no black bands on each side).
Swapping the card is a hassle but it's the best option I could think of.
I hope other users can somehow profit from my experience.
Weird. The app is not looking for the phone model; it's looking for the Android version.
Correct !
I can only assume that the model and droid version are conflated since the Note 4 was last updated in 2015 (marshmallow 6.0.1) and no further updates were/are authorized.
And so if the app sees Note 4 it can only be 6.0.1 max.
Just guessing here.
I spent alot of time studying build.prop mods to spoof my version but that never panned out.
I feel like I need to restate this: it doesn’t care if you have a note4 and limit based on that. It only limits based on version of Android.
Weird that PixelExperience didn’t work….

Trying to understand how this might work to make MY android version masquerede as a newer version that would permit the installation of the DTVS APK.
It appears that having rooted via Chainfire that I would need to unroot and then start over with Magisk.
Something about the stock boot.img being patched creating an obstacle to the installation.
Has anyone successfully installed Magisk while previously rooted ?
I tried and the app installs but two critical buttons are grayed out at the bottom of the app.
SU and Modules.
Anyone ???
