Camera image degradation from a drop? - LG G6 Questions and Answers

My G6 took a couple of short tumbles. Only a couple of feet from unpadded airline carpet but it's in a good case. Anybody hear of things like this degrading camera image quality or is it pretty much all or nothing where you can easily tell the camera module is damaged?

Note4 S6 Camera Upgrade

The Galaxy S6 uses the same camera sensor as the note 4, but the S6 camera module has a slightly better lens. I use my phone for all kinds of product pictures and scanning notes/ lectures at school so I gotta have the S6 camera in my note 4. I'm going to document my swap here.
I just received my S6 camera module $20.00 from ebay G920F is the S6 model and 16M is the mega pixels the sensor captures. I'm still researching the video limit removing hack especially increasing 4k capture time from 5 min to 30 min. Heres my new sensor, I'm waiting on amazon to ship some disassembly tools I've been sorely needing. It's about time I had a real sprudger and not a harbor freight nylon body panel pry bar.
Pic of new sensor.
Let me know how it goes I've been thinking on doing the same thing
From what someone said samsung said the camera want work in n4 the to the software not compatible with the 2 phones. Let us know if it works along with some sample pics showing the improvement or issues.

^Hahahaha that got me rolling
Did this work?
So I want to say this is one of the hardest phones I've ever opened. I have a bunch of video footage I took and have not yet edited any of it. If you're super impatient I'll give you the super fast rundown without any details. Yes it works, but it isn't plug and play. The sensor is the same but the circuit board it is mounted on is not the same. The S6 camera module won't fit into the cutout made for the note4 camera module. What I ended up doing was removing the optics from the S6 camera lens, and swapping the actual lens portion of the camera module onto the note 4 sensor board, I'm waiting on gold foil tape from amazon to repair my EM shielding that got tore up by the glue. The note4 is entirely glued together. I'll post up pics and videos a bit later when I get more time. You can see the S6 CCD sensor and board there, I just snapped it since it was in my way and I couldn't fit it in my phone without cutting up my motherboard. I got the optics from it and stuck those in my phone. The photos are shot from my S4 which I'm using while I wait for foil tape from amazon. I have not gotten to test the software compatibility because my phone is still apart.
Another difference is in these little rollerballs inside the lens. I imagine they have something to do with focusing, The note 4 has 3 white ones in each rail you can see one in the photo it's the white sphere in the bottom of the magnetic generator part of the module. The S6 has smaller black ones as well, you can see in photo too. The note 4 doesn't matter on the arrangement of rollers, but the S6 has different roller arrangement and I wasn't expecting to find those so I don't know if I lost some or put them in the wrong order, I have to get another S6 camera module to investigate that if it matters
tl;dr you can swap the optics but it isn't as simple as you'd hope
This is pretty hardcore, I have to say. I was thinking whether or not this would work in my head, and now we have someone crazy enough to actually try it.
auto focus has some issues, but if I let it autofocus then move the camera manually I get a really nice clean shot. Noticing the phone gets pretty hot right behind the memory card slot, I'm wondering if I need thermal paste or something back there, but I put the phone back together and everything is ticking along just fine, I'm going to order another s6 camera module so I can pay attention to the order and composition of the rollers maybe that matters too. If that doesn't work then I'd say while the sensor may be the same apparently the board that drives the electromagnets is different and therefore this won't work since that board will not fit unless there is someone who can fashion an adapter cord to go between the sensor board and the mainboard thus allowing repositioning of the sensor board. I'm going to see if there exists some sort of "extension cord" for this type of connector. Basically I just need a bit of ribbon cable to give me a little flexibility in positioning the board and I can just plug and play the S6 board in there since I dremeled out my subframe a little.

Uh I would say less. Auto focus flat out isn't working. The lens isn't getting positioned correctly relative to the ccd, this is a software issue or a hardware issue. The video is producing right now. Guess I should start taking some footage showing the problems. Just finished doing the swap video. This is only my second youtube video so I'm learning. I'm a filthy casual =P
Video should be produced and uploaded to youtube in an hour so sayeth the progress bar.
Off to the gym back in like 2 hours. Depending on how automated cyberpower is with youtube I'll have a link for you guys.
AAAND I forgot sound, man im a scrub I'm gonna postpone gym its too hot right now anyway.
Gutsy! My note 4 will not autofocus at all. Im interested if you think it is hardware or software. I have dropped it once. Could that have damaged these balls you are talking about?
Maybe or jammed it, the sensor is just free floating in there with 1 permanent magnet on each side of the optics carriage (the part that actually contains the glass lenses) then in the plastic housing there are what I think is 4, 2 coil electromagnets, one on each side that float the sensor to the correct position while it rolls on the little rollers in the two V grooves to keep it perpendicular to the ccd.
This is a photo of the S6 sensor, the note 4 sensor you can see in the video. Note 4 sensor has 6 white rollers total 3 for each Vgroove S6 has atleast 1 white 1 black for each but I may have lost some because I opened that sensor first and wasn't expecting tiny tiny rollers to be inside.
Okay learned a lot still a lot to learn about making videos.
Here is the video of the complete teardown with some commentary about what I'm doing. Gives you an idea of what you'll be up against in there and shows the disassembly of the camera module.

You never skip the gym bro lol. For that you owe me a heavy set of 30 of squats or deadlifts
Okay so the extension cord idea has been done, I'm hoping I can find the connector easier than he did for LG

how is audio on video recording? I have soo many issues with audio with this phone, Im a pro singer and I record my live concerts for references but audio is soo bad, it have a lot of noise, like it have some kind of noise reduction that when music is louder, the sound of the video decreases and its gets choppy with a lot of noise, been researching about it and asking about it everywhere here in xda and can't find solution :/

Umm this phone doesn't have a terrible audio. For a phone is actually amazing. No its not studio quality for no complaints for a phone....clearly you haven't compared it to other phones. No hate.

I considered a similar situation when trying to use my phone as a decibel meter to measure how loud my car exhaust was. I was getting complaints from one of my neighbors about my wrx being too noisy so I ended up measuring it with my phone. It didn't work because the microphone on these phones is chosen and calibrated for its sensitivity to the noise a regular human voice makes when the phone is reasonably close to a human mouth. Using the phone in a "live" environment or somewhere there is a ton of background noise or amplified vocals or other sources of noise outside of its specs will likely interfere with your recordings. You'd need to test it in a more scientific way to narrow down the problem try isolating if all recordings are ruined or just really loud ones or if even the choppiness could be caused by processing power and too many background apps or something.

Audible rattling when tapping on top-right of 6P?

Im getting an obvious rattling sound right around where the camera is on the 6P when I tap pretty much anywhere on the phone, front or back, doesnt matter.
I tried to pinch the top right corner between my fingers, pretty hard actually, and then tap on the phone again, and the sound ALMOST goes away. Loose component?
Anyone else have the problem?
Yeah i believe the newest update fixes rattling noises and adds band 12 for tmobile users.. battery improvements too

Same here. Used to have this issue with the N6, many said it was the OIS. Seeing as how this phone lacks OIS, perhaps its a loose component.
I'm hearing this also. I think it's the camera but mine works great no problems at all.
When I owned the iphone 5 it had the same sound and it was the camera module. So no biggie. If I get any problems with the camera I will surely ask for an warranty replacement.

Same here. Anybody tried to replace phone because of that?
I have it too. No biggie as long as it doesn't affect performance. I more worried about the pink hue on lowest brightness setting (adaptive display on)
I decided that it was so loud and obnoxious, I did an RMA on it. Replacement will be here tomorrow. Will see if the new one has the same issue. I would normally open my own phone to fix the issue myself, but with a 3/10 repairability score, Im not likely to touch it. If the second one does it, I guess I'll live with it.
My previous phones all had this except N6. All our iPhones suffer from it. Not sure what it is though
If it helps any my Galaxy s5 has this.. I noticed it after changing from a an S3 that never did, it ended up being normal on the s5, something do with camera something in there jiggles or rattles a bit.. espically if i just shake the phone i can hear it.. never had a problem tho..
I have the same noise in my 6P and I tell you what it is, is the camera auto focus let's I side hitting the body of the phone when you toss it around and when you put it on the table. It should of had more space in between the camera lens and the body of the phone. Because the lens moves when it auto focuses and any camera with auto focus will have some play when you move the phone, because if the moving parts, the space inside the phone around the camera is so o tight, it touches the body. I hope it will not damage the camera with time.
Every phone with a camera will have this. The lens needs a few mm of empty space to move back and forth to focus. It's basic optics. Nothing you can do about it.
I too have this problem. The rattling sound is loud and clear.
As few of the customers are having this issues, I believe it is a manufacturing defect. I will ask for replacement as I can not bare with such issue. Had spent huge money on phone, why should I compromise and get settle? Need Replacement.
Anyone get a replacement for this yet? Is the rattle still there?
I sent back my 1st 6P for a defect in the screen, got my new one yesterday and it's got this rattle everyone here is talking about - I don't remember my first one having this? When I squeeze with a little pressure, it goes away. I called and have a replacement coming, but with EVERYTHING else on the phone being almost perfect, it scares me if this is the normal?? If it is, I'll keep my current 6P and live with the rattle.
I'm on my third 6P now and all three have had this rattle. It's just the camera. I have a N4 in front of me which has a rattle when tapped around the camera, so did the Galaxy Nexus. I'm sure the N5 had it too. N6 didn't, maybe because it had OIS?
I'm sure it is just the camera elements. If you start the camera app and tap there the rattle is almost non existant. Probably because the autofocus is active and holding the optical elements in place.
My 6p doesn't rattle. RMA?

I also have this rattling sound in my Nexus 6P. I tried to investigate it (without tearing it apart) by going to ifixit. If one examines the back portion around the camera, there is a white wire that runs across almost the entire width of the phone (checkout the image here: https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/ZlpUoq3OjhHJsqTo.huge). This wire, I'm not sure if it is glued to the motherboard or body and hence might be the reason behind the rattling noise. I hear this rattle when I gently tap the area around the camera or when I casually keep the phone on a hard surface (without being extremely gentle about it which I believe no one is).
If this wire is lose ( not carefully attached to the metal cover which holds the 3.5mm headphone jack and the front camera ), you might hear it bounce against the metal.
This isn't a problem. I have in my desk my 6P, a OnePlus One, a Nexus 4, an original Moto G and a Nexus 7 2013 and they all do the exact same rattle when I tap them near the camera. The rattles ceases or decreases when I open the camera app and the devices' cameras focus.

I'm pretty sure the camera makes this sound. I've had 2 6P's and they both made this noise when I either tapped on the phone or go to put it down on a table.

Build Quility Issue Nexus 6P

Dear All,
I would like to have your Opinion on the Following.
I believe my Phone has bad build quality. Google say this is normal and they will not exchange it.
I would like the opinion of the community on the following topic.
I*have encountered 2 problems with my Nexus 6P:*
Problem 1: clicking sound coming from camera if dropped lightly on bed or sofa, or if shaken (most likely inferior camera module) sound might come from autofocus but persists if camera is on.
Problem 2: Creeking sound and noticeable give and bending if pressure is applied to back panel, just underneath the fingerprint scanner. This I can tolerate from a plastic phone but not from a 699€ device. most likely the adhesive is applied badly and the creaking sound happens when the backplate of the phone springs back into place.
Admittedly minor complaints but still substantial build quality issues.
I created a youtube Video to illustrate my complaint but I can not post this yet as I am a new user. ***tu.be/f0Kf13dECFI
I dont have any of those, and i agree, even tho its really minor problems, its sad if google dont want to exchange

Indeed Google not cool
Almost every phone has this tickling sound coming from camera. Try it your self, hit soft with your hands your phone near camera when device locked and also try that when trying to focus in camera app, then this sound stops. It's because camera sensor.

I agree that most phones have this rattle, however with mine it seems to be getting worse, I have tried it with the camera on and it still makes the noise. I have talked to google about it and they say it is the gyroscope and that this is normal. However if it is normal why do other phones not make this sound.
Anyway the bigger Issue is the bad quality of the adhesive in the back panel. The creeking sound is disturbing as it always happens even if I am only holding it in my hand. One day this thing will just fall apart.

Spring contact not touching metal back

Hey, quick question. Is anyone else's spring terminal in the bottom-right-most corner too low to make contact with the back? Mine is and my gps seems a little inaccurate compared with other phones ive had in the past. Just wondering if this could be it.
There's lot of them. Bend then slightly up with a plastic knife something. Took my galaxy note 4 apart and did same thing to all the contacts. Got improved reception and GPS working again.
Yeah, I probed a little with a little pick tool but they're so small I need something even tinier like a sewing needle. And it looks like ill have better luck if I remove the back shell as there isnt much room to get at it as is. It is so low I wondered if it was intentional. Hence the reason I asked on here. When I look across the edge of the phone I can see the others peek above the plastic but this one shows nothing. Hope that makes sense, it is an awkward visual to describe.
I'm disappointed that I even have to consider opening my brand new expensive phone. But I also
dont want to fork over $20 to Tmobile to swap it. I've owned the G2 and the G5 before this and both of them had faults requiring replacement as well.
Mine is too, leave it
Hmm...strange. I just tested mine without my case or the battery cover, and my GPS locked on faster and better than it ever has since getting this phone. Seeing how recessed that connector is, I'd have to say it was intentional, though I'm not sure why it was made that way since there is a contact pad on the battery cover in that spot. I'm going to have to agree with wing_addict_usa, and say leave it as it is.
My gps sucks with just a simple plastic case on the phone. It goes bonkers. I swear it's the gyro/compass thing in the phone.
Did you calibrate it? And I didn't lay it on the camera lens. Just a flat surface with camera lens hanging off the edge.
Thanks for the replies, glad to know my spring comtact is normal. At least I can look elsewhere for the cause.
I've done the figure 8 calibration while in Google maps with no change. Using the "GPS Test" app it was struggling to stay under 35ft of accuracy.
The problem seems to be a little inconsistent though. After posting I was able to eventually get between 15 and 20 feet of accuracy. I wonder if it is emf noise while data polling or noise while charging that could be interfering with the reception of gps signal.
The poor reception occurred with my phone on a magnetic holder attached to my windshield driving on interstate highway. Other phones of mine normally get pretty good signal in that situation.
Ill keep an eye on it and post any new findings but for now I'm kinda stumped. GPS worked fine up until the day of my posting.
To be honest, I completely forgot about calibrating the GPS. It has been so long since I've had to do it since my last few phones had great GPS radios, and were accurate out of the box. I calibrated mine last night after having to look up how to do it again, and it seemed better this morning. Still not as accurate as the M8 I upgraded from, but now it's not all over the place like it was.
How do you calibrate it?
Just an update to my situation. I seem to be getting better reception now but not as good as my alcatel idol 3 5.5" . I can get down to 15ft of accuracy on the v20 and 10 ft accuracy on Idol 3 in same location.
Btw, The GPS antenna is located in the top plastic piece which has metal tabs that make contact with more of those metal springs. I removed mine and put it back on to see if I could get a better connection. It seemed pretty snug though and not much chance for a weak connection.
I'm not totally convinced that was the issue but I'm happy for now as the navigation seems to be more reliable.
Oh and the calibration is not the gps but the gyros so that the maps orientate correctly to the position your phone is in. Its done by moving the phone in a figure 8 pattern. There is also a leveling calibration in the menu somewhere that has you set the phone on known level surface and then press calibrate to zero the level to the phones position.
The figure 8 is the one I was referring to though and now that I think of it, not much use for GPS reception.

Photo Quality

For some reason, the quality of pictures on my Mate 9 has deteriorated. I think it happened after a fall, but I'm not really sure. I replaced the whole camera module. (https://www.amazon.com/Rear-Big-Camera-Huawei-Mate/dp/B076HKS2MB)
After replacing the camera, pictures where better, but then they got worse. I opened the phone, pushed things around (nothing in specific), nothing was out of place, but just for the sake of trying to fix the issue. Same thing happens, quality improves, but then deteriorated.
Any suggestions? I don't really want to pay hundreds for a new phone if the issue is small
