[How to] Remap the Bixby Button to Launch Google Assistant - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

I've just published a full tutorial with step-by-step instructions on how to remap the Bixby button on the S8+ to launch Google Assistant or Google Now. Check it out! https://www.xda-developers.com/how-...-the-galaxy-s8-s8-to-launch-google-assistant/

I've just heard that Samsung are releasing a OTA update to stop mapping this button. Will this tutorial still work?

It's not 'are' releasing an update, it's already out, and it makes it impossible to remap it AFAIK (without root).

It's been reported that after this OTA that the ability to remap has been removed.
Did you apply the OTA update when you got the phone, then applied the remap or did you remap before you applied the update?

Don't trust everything you read I guess. Maybe there is an update in the works, but I haven't been prompted for it.

Excellent. I'll find out tomorrow and give this guide a try.

For comparison, this is my phone after the update (remapping not working)

It's been well documented for a while exactly what they have done, and samsung have specifically done it to block being able to change the button, it has nothing to do with exynos. It is feasible that different carriers etc are sending out the updates at different times, not everyone has apparently had that update yet, but they will.

Weird.... I just tried the app and recapped the Bixby button to Google Now and it worked.

Same here just remapped using the bxaction app

It doesn't work after the latest update.. International Exyns s8+..

AT&T
I am on AT&T and it says it all updated and I was able to remap the button still.

it works fine for me.. but I have an update of 600+ MB ready for installation.. I'm gonna have to postpone it.
For me the bixby button pulls up the notification shade -> Perfect for onehanded use at the moment.
Samsung should unlock the button once again!

I used bxactions and have the T-Mobile s8 plus and it worked. Btw, I applied the update.

Yep works again with the bxActions app
Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G955F met Tapatalk

Yepp.. The developer updated the app, and now it's working with a new workaround..

Can confirm ihave asnapdragon not only does it not allow you to remap the button but it also does not detect one letter words for auto spacing
Edit: this is kinda bull, you can't disable Bixby either.
It also doesn't show up in apps that are consuming battery life so they're most likely lying about that too.

I was just playing with my phone, and found that i can deactivate unusefull system apps in settings>applicattions>all applications. I just choosed bbc player, music hub, play videos, and others. When i click on the application, instead of uninstall, i have a "deactivate" option. I don't even need root! Now i have a cleaner homescreen. Does anybody seen this? Haven't found anything using the search...
By the way, i tested this in ics

Last I tried, ICS had a major bug as it relates to deactivating apps. Once deactivated, they disappear and you cant reactivate them. Havent tried it in a couple of firmware updates but I deactivated the SMS app in favor of GoSMS and I couldnt get it back. I had to reflash the firmware.

You could get package disabler, then disable SDM, then restart the device. I did that and it worked. I've always done the debloated ROM tactic in the past, which always removed SDM.apk, but I can't make a ROM without root. Someone mentioned package disabler on here, so I bought it and gave it a shot. It works pretty well. It doesn't remove the apks from the system like a ROM based debloat, but it keeps them from running, which is an awesome feature to have without having root access.
Mine broke android pay. Did anyone else see this issue?

I can't find it either. I got so excited for a second. What sound setting has the 3 dots that you have to click?
You have to select "Volume" and then you will see the 3 dot menu.

Is the volume warning still there? I am not on this phone right now but thinking about getting the S8 but if this warning is still there I won't consider it.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Its an EU Directive that all audio devices with headphones must have a limit of 85dB with a visual override allowed to increase this to 100dB. Thus means if you have no screen then its stuck at 85dB. I cant name the actual directive but here is a BBC link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-21294537
This is the reason why the setting isnt available in the EU as this prompt MUST be made under the regulations. They did allow some leeway though by saying this prompt is only required once per reboot. I have my phone auto-reboot once a week so i only have to accept the prompt once on a Monday morning and i never see it again for a week
If you have root theres probably a system file you could modify on reboot to pretend you have already confirmed the prompt but i dont know where you could start for that.
Also, maybe you could use tasker to set the volume high and then confirm the prompt for you on reboot. I dont know enough about tasker to do this personally but automation is the whole purpose of the app so im sure its possible.

It has to be if you live in the EU. Its part of EU law. If your in the UK like me, even though we are leaving the EU, this is one of those laws which im sure the UK will keep so don't expect it disappear anytime soon

According to someone in the Sprint thread its for Google Maps/Navigation stability and fixes.
That it does. It has to do with navigation and swipe. Nothing big.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
It's a really big security patch for one of the largest Android vulnerabilities too. I'm glad it enhances swipe, the samsung keyboard is particularly inaccurate on this phone.
Does NOT patch BlueBorne Vulnerability!!!!
Installed the update this morning. It does NOT eliminate the BlueBorne vulnerability, unless Armis' scanner is broken ...
EDIT: Contacted Armis and received the following in response:
Armis Security said:
We have reviewed this. It appears that Verizon pushed a critical update that addresses BlueBorne. However, in our review they did not change the security patch level of this build to September 1, 2017. The Security Patch Level (SPL) in build NMF26X.N950USQU1AQI5 shows a date of August 1, 2017.
We have updated our device scan and review to account for this, and it will be available on the Google Play store shortly.
Thank you for reaching out us on this issue.

EDIT #2: An updated version of the BlueBorne Scanner from Armis is available on Google Play. I've installed it, but unfortunately it still indicates that VZW devices are vulnerable.
UPDATE: Armis' app has been updated to version 1.04, which correctly identifies VZW Note 8s as having been patched to eliminate the vulnerability.
It changed my 4GLTE icon so that it is constantly highlighted even on Wi-Fi. I don't think that was present before unless I'm mistaken
Just got it yesterday and also turned it onto this this morning. The OTA's on my S7 Active over on AT&T completely and eventually thrashed my phone and was eventually unusable. So I'm waiting.

I'm glad switching keyboards got easier on these phones at least. I'm using swiftkey beta and it's much better than the past. Better than gboard for me. But I like bixby for voice transcription.

SHOW your Keyboard, PLEASE! (on Note9)

Trying to find a better keyboard app for my phone, I'm not impressed by mine. Please show your keyboard and explain which keyboard app you're using (or launcher/theme). Just a screen shot of the letters is fine.
EDIT: I have the T-mobile SM-N960U, thus it currently CANNOT be rooted (from what I've read). Please keep your suggestions to those that do not require root. Thanks!
Absolutely love "Venom Theme" (Available in Xda labs) still the Samsung Keyboard but works just fine for me :good:
I am using stock keyboard.
The only thing I don't like about it is that spelling works only for one language at a time.
For instance Swype checked spelling and suggested corrections in two languages (my local and English).
With Samsung I need to switch between languages. It's not hard (swype space bar).. but still a little inconvenient.
Nothing has worked better for me than SwiftKey since I started using it back when Android was still Eclair and had a Samsung Moment.
Even the Beta is solid.
I've tried a couple but always come back to SwiftKey.

If you use a samsung device you should enable it going throuh settings>general management>language and input>on screen keyboard and select xperia keyboard.
If you are using another brand that could be in a different section in the settings
