Rapidly losing patience w/ my Vibrant

I got my first Vibrant on launch day with high hopes. Two weeks later I had a new one due the phone freezing EVERY time I opened Google Maps. I've held on to this one now waiting for a GPS fix and JI6 worked great for me....for about the first week. Now its just as bad as ever.
I get an initial fix much quicker, but after about five minutes it loses GPS signal completely and indefinitely. In the past week my phone has begun freezing AGAIN, including three times today alone. Two of the times I would go to unlock my phone and nothing would happen. The screen would remain off, softkeys wouldn't light up, and a long press on the power button does nothing. I have to pull the battery out and reboot.
This is incredibly frustrating because this phone takes nearly 5 minutes to boot (never actually timed it but I have to imagine somewhere close to that). So its a long wait before I can do what I intended to do. I did notice that Shopsavvy was sucking on the GPS signal when I rebooted the phone so perhaps that's what was secretly crashing it (Needless to say, ShopSavvy got the boot after the second freeze).
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the Maps updates w/ no change. I would bring the phone back but T-Mo doesn't have any other phones I want. My Touch 4G is hideous and I don't want another QWERTY like the G2.
So did I just end up with another dud Vibrant or is there a fix? Would rooting fix my problems? This phone has never been rooted or hacked in any way.

Short answer: Yes.
Short but longer answer: At least install a LagFix. I got back and forth between stock JI6 and Fusion 1.1 a lot. JI6 with a custom kernel and LagFix is butter. Fusion is even better.
You may have a dud though. I haven't had that many problems except for things I did myself.

I did not know what a real smartphone was supposed to be until I rooted and custom rom(ed) it.
For the first 3 months I had the phone... I was reluctant to root. But ofcourse... It was just another phone... laggy and slow...
Until I rooted and installed Bionix. Now its smooth as butter.
Good things in life are always free. I paid for a suffocated phone... xda developers free services released and refreshed my phone.

I would install Fusion 1.1 with the Core kernel from Sombionix and see if that fixes it. Stock is totally unacceptable.
If it stills sucks, its likely a dud.

You must either be getting dud phones, or you're installing some app that's messing them up(?) I'm stock/unrooted, and very happy. Not that I doubt the happy results reported by folx like those above, but I don't have bothersome "lag" or freezing etc. -- no issues that even tempt me to ROM-swap (I wouldn't have kept the phone if I weren't satisfied w/it stock).
My GPS did used to lose signal as you report; haven't given it a good comparison test since JI6 update.

Well I've rooted using OCLF and also applied the lag fix. No change.
I still find the phone dead 2-3 times a day with no warning. I'll go to wake it up and nothing happens.
Some of you think installing a new ROM with help? How can I do that? The one time I tried using ODIN, it was never able to identify my phone.

Did you make sure you had the Samsung USB Driver for the Vibrant? If you don't Odin won't recognize your phone. Also important to have a newer version of Odin. Like I have 1.7. And last as Odin is a little troublesome, you should have Odin up and running before you connect your phone. Read the Bible in the Dev section for links.

1) Could be a dud, it happens
2) When I first got my Vibrant, it boots up so fast. Its because there are hardly any apps installed that as part of the boot up process, go and check on. I think it has to do with the cache, because once you load it up with apps, the time it takes to get to the home screen is noticeably longer.
Also ShopSavvy is a bit wonky with the gps, so I disabled that setting in the app. But my though is you might have a bad app installed or something funky on the internal/sd memory that its fighting with. I'd say as something to just try for kicks, backup everything, copy memory to your pc, wipe the memory and do a factory reset(You could odin to stock, but you'll lose the Sims app). If things work, slowly add your apps back in.
As for gps, yes before the update it just wouldn't lock or would take forever, but still not be very accurate. After the update(but then also after alot of flashing different roms, then finally just going back to stock), gps works like a champ. But I would also point out that gps is vulnerable to several things. Don't place the phone near any large metal or magnetic object, this will throw the compass off. And always try to have a clear view of the sky, without being in a 'canyon' of buildings. The buildings distort the signal(which in the case of gps is just a signal that tells the time) and can throw off the reading(which is where the a in agps is supposed to come in).

[Q] How many Crashes/Hangs per day (Avg Est.)

I'm having many many days with this tablet that are frustrating.... Today for instance, I have had 2 re-boots and 3 hangs!!! My Xoom on a custom JB ROM didn't have these issues....!!!

I can't recall for sure, but I think I had maybe 2 total random reboots, and no app FC's (on stock ROM). I use CM 10.1's nightlies now and haven't had any crashes or hangs.

is everything functional on cm10?
to the op, I have had the n10 hang while in chrome. when that happens, I have to reboot by holding down the power button until it kills power and reboots. on average probably once a few days. I am not a heavy user though. have tried dolphin browser and it too crashes although can't remember if it will hang the entire device.

Ever since I updated from stock, it runs hot and now getting reboots.
Never had an issues once and ran cool on stock rom.

Mines rebooted maybe 2 or 3 times total. Been using it about 4 hours every day for the past month. Hasn't been anything anywhere near what I'd call an issue. Running stock.

On a good day 1. On a bad day 4.

I turned off location services and stopped using chrome and have only had 1 random reboot in the last 2 weeks. Hopefully google fixes something soon.

If I use chrome, its very likely that mine will crash. Using other browsers makes it less frequent. Hopefully they fix it asap.

I use my tablet for around 2-3 hours on work days and around 6 hours on days off. Today is a day off, and I've already had to force reboot it 3 times... I'm close to asking for a replacement, but I'm also going to try a few things before I do. There is no doubt about it. It should just work and it isn't. But before I send it back I will wipe and start over ( I am not doing any thing special with this device either. Everything is stock)
Most of the system hang's I get are almost always in Chrome. Sometimes Facebook or Twitter, and then when I have to force the reboot (pwr + vol up + vol down) it almost always reboots into installing a new app update... Which makes me wonder if that is the issue. I have disabled auto updating of apps, and have already had the same issue so I'm not convinced it was that after all.
So I guess I can either assume that my hardware is good and this is a software issue which I can wait for Google/Samsung to address or cut my losses and try and get a replacement device before X-mas... Right now the poll shows that more people are having a good experience than bad....

Several a day with location services off.

It may hang up about 1 time per day. happened when portrate, almost.

I had a few at first i think it was due to the chrome browser on 4.2.1 but did a FDR and seems to be smooth now..
Also used the toolkit to root and works like a charm now

Haven't had any in CM10.1 but I had 1-2 a day with stock

Same here running aokp with ktoonz kernel. It's been more than a week without freeze/reboots. I don't game either tho & do use Ocean.

Depends on use. With heavy use every 3-4 hours? Its only rebooted once overnight. Mine seems more prone to do it while installing apps if I try to do something else while installing....although it will just as readily hang browsing with chrome. I was thinking of RMA but read some horror stories on that

I was getting somewhere around 1-3 per day on stock. I've given up waiting for Google to fix it, so am now on cyanogenmod nightlies, and have not had one single freeze or reboot since. This tablet is now perfect.

My experience is virtually the same as Pihrana. I am under the impression that the hangs and reboots are a software problem that is likely caused by my particular usage patterns or an app or setting (I have location settings disabled and it still hangs). Either way I have decided not to exchange it, as the problem will very likely be addressed in a future patch, and I might end up with a device with hardware problems (light bleed, etc) in addition to the existing software issues.

Phone Dies @ 15% Every Time - Can't Figure Out Issue

So I've had this issue for a while now, probably since spring where my phone will consistently die at around 15% Everytime instead of 1%, it will just skip from 15% to 1% then power off immediately. This happened today when I had battery saver auto enable at 25% and used it a bit more till it got around 15% and while in standby it just powered off and when I tried hitting it back on it actually did and showed 1%. During this time I made a phone call and opened hangouts for about 2 minutes and locked my phone again and about another minute later it randomly powered off again and would no longer get past the boot animation without shutting off. I don't believe this is a ROM issue since I've changed my ROM multiple times from stock to many custom ones (Marshmallow/Nougat) and the issue is present on all of them. I am currently on the latest PureNexus ROM with Franco kernel.
Only thing that would make sense is that my battery is degraded pretty badly and I just need a new battery installed. I bought my phone from Huawei and have no insurance plan so I don't know how much battery replacement would come out to be.

Well I've done full wipes (system,cache,internal,everything) and have gone through multiple roms stock, purenexus, weta, etc and it's been present in each. It does feel like it started happening once i switched to Nougat but I couldn't remember exactly. Might try a marshmallow rom and see if it's any different since I haven't ran marshmallow since Android N came out for beta.

I have this issue also but it happens randomly. It started when I installed Nougat.

I have that too, even after I've flashed a full system image of 7.1.1 DP (used the flash all script, so including everything). Very annoying...

same here. did marshmallow help at all? i'm about to go that route, lock boot loader, etc.

Root if you didn't, then do a battery calibration

I have this issue too. Battery unpredictable drops to 0% at 10%-20% and phone switches off.

I've had this issue before. I did a couple of things so not so sure what fixed it. I installed ex kernel. And tried the different Cpu settings on the Interactive Governor. Ghostpepper is the one I'm currently on. No idea what fixed it. But my phone did that same thing twice before I swapped to a different kernel.

I think its more or less your cpu not liking any of the settings. Maybe making it scale down to low to fast or not letting it scale up. I'm not so sure but I think thats what it is. I also doubt any battery calibration apps do much. If I remember right all they do is erase your battery history. If anything it might be bad to use those apps. To each his own tho. I guess you guys can try those apps.

This apparently happens if you have auto battery saver enabled. Disable it and you should've have the issue.
Fun fact: if you select whatever percentage in the auto-mode, it will die at that percentage.

I got the same issue but randomly after upgrade to 7.

That makes sense. My was battery saver was set to 10% which is when my phone would shut down. What fixed it for me was dirty flashing the rom. But I bet it only fixed it because it turned off battery saver.
On the other hand, I guess it does a great job saving battery this way. Best battery saver ever.

Mine and my wife's are hardware related. RMA'd both of them. Her's is a 5X though and would turn back on after about 20-30 seconds by itself after it turned off. Factory reset and all that, still on MM. Spoke to Project Fi and guy had me update it to N, it did it again right after we got done doing setup and it was still in the 90s%

Update: Got the new replacement. They sent me a brand new one!!!

Apps take forever to load

Since the Oreo update the performance of my Nvidia Shield has gone down the toilet. Initially the UI was very sluggish. That seems to have improved a bit although it's still nowhere near as fast and responsive as it was on Nougat. But now the slow loading time of apps is starting to drive me crazy. When I click to open an app like Amazon Prime Video it takes 5-10 seconds for the app to open and then another 5-10 seconds for the home screen to populate with content. Before the update everything was pretty much instant. Is there a way to improve Shield performance after this terrible update? I already did a factory reset and it didn't help.

Same observation for me

I contacted Nvidia support via live chat. They said they would get back to me via email but since this doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem that probably means there's no fix.

I wouldn't say mine has been sluggish, but I've been having plenty of problems.
Anytime I tell one of my GH devices to do something on the shield they blink and then give no response. Even in My Activity logs for Home there is nothing in response to my commands.
Starting to really irritate me, I'm about done with Google Home and it's only been a week. Maybe HomeKit won't be so buggy (oh no! Apple :silly. Trying to convince my wife to buy into smart home stuff, and Google is managing to make it seem nothing short of a stupid gimmick. Doesn't do what it should more than half the time.
"Ok, Google, skip the track that's playing."
"Okay, but please try again and specify the device."
"Okay, Google. Skip the track that is currently playing on Spotify on the Shield."

Assistant OSD won't go away until I press back or tell google to "go away."
I had to reinstall Spotify today because it wouldn't load ("error" on Spotify start screen), even after reboots.
I just got this thing and have no experience with pre-oreo Shield, but it isn't difficult to understand why so many people are upset.
Might be driving to Best Buy buy the end of the week.

I did another factory reset. I did the 2 hour version before going to bed so the Shield would be powered on overnight in case it needed to do some background optimization. It took me hours to set up everything again and the end result was no improvement at all. My Shield Pro is still laggy and slow to respond to commands and might actually be worse now than it was before the factory reset. I've read the cheaper 16GB model is not experiencing this issue so at this point I really regret spending the extra money on the pro model. It's very frustrating to have a $300 streaming box that's barely a year old get completely trashed by an official software update.

The 16Gb version also lags after Oreo update

Performance improved after the second factory reset but it seemed to take a day to settle down. It's still not as smooth and responsive as before the update but it's also no longer maddening to use. I had a bunch of Plex crashes after the second factory reset but it seems like that might have stopped. I had a half dozen crashes over the first day and a half but so far none since then.
Oreo is faster than Nougat on phones so I don't understand why the opposite is true on Android TV. People are reporting problems on other Android boxes that got the Oreo update as well so this apparently isn't just a Nvidia issue.

Performance got so bad I ended up doing a third factory reset. After the third one everything is fast and responsive. Not sure why the first two factory resets didn't fix things. This time the only app I downloaded was Emby so maybe an app I downloaded previously was causing problems.

post 7.2 USB and app issues
i have the 2nd gen 16G version of the nvidia shield. i took the 7.2 experience upgrade and i am having lots of troubles:
my external USB hard drive just keeps scanning and never reachable
not able to start up many apps that did rely on that external storage
I have rebooted several times with no effect
i have also tried unplugging everything and then restarting them in order.
I have avoided so far a factory reset or forgetting the USB storage as those are a bit nuclear, but if there is no other option I must since most of my games and Kodi relied on teh USB and they are unusable (I did uninstall Kodi and attempt to reinstall) at bootup of Kodi, it still says "waiting for external drive.

so said after 2.5 years of owning phone maybe ill update to new android version. maybe that will alleviate some stresses i have from this poop phone.
wow what garbage went to android v8. nonstop bugs.
garbage new "enhancements". makes my blood boil
this is why i never update things unless its absolutely broken and no choice. i dont believe in updating and only believe in clean installs.
power button stops working randomly. i cant turn off the phone. only can take the battery out.
boots into safe mode and i need to reboot again. switches my keyboard from ms swipe back to the garbage oem one horrible keyboard that oem one
keeps harassing me to update even though ive tried to stop notifications reminding me. maybe im doing something wrong. i went into developer mode and have automatic updates turned off. but after v8 it doesnt work
everything lags like crazy. horribly slow
when it gets to 22% battery it shuts off. im using oem batteries only. i had aftermarket when it was new but they would shut off randomly so got rid of rhem. i have 4 oem. 2 newish
still same issue where i have no signal(no internet /data) at times in vertical mode and turn it horizontally signal bars increase and phone works again
gui is absolute crap. new colored buttons in settings like its a clown show. i absolute have no resprct for designers who feel they need to hide everything together to make it "seem" like its uncluttered. like rhe garbage new facebook gui. hiding everything with tons of clixks to get to it. tons of bugs there as well
no photo editing app is there
no 2nd screen is on when i have my phone off so if i want to see the clock i have to trun it on ot double tap. double tap doesn't work on first try. only 2nd time.
no editing bittons in 2nd screen
absolute garbage os. now to factory reset again and never to update again
i hope lg's phone section goes rhe way of bb/htc/ms/nokia. they just create garbage phones. and will never forgive for the bootloop issues in my g4 and hence why their markwt share is down the shets. feckem. let me rot.

Thw phone is so unstable i did a factory reset again thinking it would go back to v7 on my phone but that garbage v8 is burned into my rom on thw phone such a huge mistake ive not made in a long time
How do i get back v7 android? Help me out please

The battery issue, i know for me at least was an issue with the OEM batteries. Even brand new ones will shut off at decent a % left, The best i can say for that is go for an aftermarket battery. (if you really want to), I have a power button issue as well, Try putting a small piece of paper in the back of your phone, right above the SD card slot, (double folded usually works for me) That might solve your issue as well.
Your phone booting into recovery/safe mode etc sounds like a bad system install to me. Factory resetting unfortunately won't fix that. If your phone is rooted you can just reinstall your system via recovery. If not, if you have a computer handy, you can download a tool from LG called "LG Bridge". Plug in your phone via usb and click recovery to reinstall your system.(it will wipe everything. if you have an SD card take it out for safety)
The lag could be due to overheating, mine lagged at first on android 8 but quit. The lag could also be due to the bad install of the system as well.
Hopefully you could find some help. This is a great phone in my opinion. Working great for me!

Download the nougat KDZ from here and flash back. I tried oreo as well and was not too happy. Plus it's missing the patched camera libs.

i brought a new battery ages ago .. 4500 , put into the phone .. its been fine, no issues .
