Philippine Moto Z Play Thread - Moto Z Play Guides, News, & Discussion

Is there a thread for PH users?
Got mine from MemoX not more than a week ago and I couldnt be happier.
Coming from the nexus 6, I wanted a phone with a big screen, near stock rom and dual sim. I preordered V20 but eventually cancelled. I was also eyeing OPT as it was cheap with awesome specs but in the PH you will have to deal with 3rd party resellers or order from the US.
Then, Moto released moto z along with its kin and eventually, the dual sim variant ( initially, only single sim was available)which made my decision a bit easier.
I am very happy with this phone. On paper, specs are meh but in real life usage, WOW!
Anyone else in the PH rocking the play?

Not yet but will on January. Wait I thought the dual sim version for the Z play is available only in EU. Did you also opt for extended warranty on MemoX?

No extended warranty was offered and I didnt ask.
A few weeks back I was speaking with a moto rep in social media and they said only single sim was offered. When I went to memox in megamall last fri, i was surprised to see that they now offer dual sim on z and z play. So I was sold right then and there.

That's nice. How's the phone performing so far? Battery-wise and everyday use

I still have the habit of charging my phone when I get to the office and back home. Like I said, I was coming from the nexus 6 where I always reach 40% at the end of the day. But with this, I never go down to 70%. Battery life is subjective so my experience may be diff from others.
Battery life is excellent and like what reviews said it never lags. Actually, the only lag I have experienced was on facebook messenger. So I think that is because of that crappy app.
Great phone, you wont be dissapointed.

Hi . . . I'm a Motorola fan ever since the flip phone Razor v3i era. I was with Atrix 4G, Droid HD Maxx. Do you know any legit online shop who sells this model with COD?

Check lazada. I think they do offer cod for the z phones

Will the Z1s ever see KitKat ?

Just looking to gauge the feelings of the z1s owners regarding updates. Given that we may never be able flash stock FTFs we will be waiting for an extra few months at least after the non-carrier phones get updates. Assuming we get any updates at all. It took 5 months for the Xperia z 6906 to get 4.2.2 after the unbranded devices. 4.3 is nowhere in sight. Of course updates are not the be all end all or we would all buy a Nexus 5, but it is dissapointing.
Accessories is another area where we are severely limited also.
I dont regret getting the Z1s, the $100 visa and PS+ offers alone made it a worthwhile purchase. Im happy with the build quality, camera and overall user experience.
Just looking for feedback from the owners here.
I think it will and my gut tells me it won't take us as long to get it as it did with T-Mobile Xperia Z owners. A few reasons I feel this was way.
1. Sony is really building a good relationship with T-Mobile. It seems to be growing more and more.
2. This phone is already selling better then the Z did for The-Mobile. More owners means more hungry customers awaiting the update, word of mouth.
3. Sony is doing more to expand brand awareness in NA.
Those all have a lot to do with the priority of the update. I say once the non-carrier branded phones get it, maybe 2-3 months later we'll get it? Just a guess...

These are all good points. I was on the fence about the Z1s and ultimately went and got the Z1 Compact instead from overseas. Anyway, one other thing I wanted to mention is that T-Mobile recently has been very good with updates. I have an LG G2 on T-Mobile which I purchased thinking there was absolutely no chance of timely updates. To my surprise, KitKat arrived on Friday and made my day. Know this isn't a Sony and I'm not trying to go off-topic here, but I have been very impressed with T-Mobile releasing updates over the last few weeks. Maybe the same will hold true for the Z1S. It would be horrible for them to drop support for it. I think the ball is in Sony's court at this point since none of the phones have KitKat.
-Collin-
All three are very great points. Admittedly I am not as confident mainly because I see Sony releasing almost one or two new phones per month and I fear they are stretching themselves thin on resources to push out updates. I believe their intent is 18 months of updates for Xperia devices.
Their T-Mobile relationship is an interesting one, I have to admit that I wasn't happy with the fact that Sony refused to release an unbranded LTE Z or Z1 in the US. I also couldn't understand why they were doing this. I think its now clearly obvious they did this to avoid competing with T-Mobile. I suppose they have to take steps to build relationships with the carrier but I was disappointed all the same to have to wait for an LTE version. It appears that the converse of this is also true in that any device that DOES make it into the Sony Store (physical or online) with LTE, is likely NOT going to end up on any carrier (think Z Ultra).
Personally, I think 5-6 months (after Z1) wait before we see KitKat on the Z1s. Nice to hear that it is selling well though.

Carriers have to get their act together. If the Z1 is going to get KK in April, the Tmobile version (almost exact same software) should get it no more than a month later. I might throw a fit if I have to wait till October. By then, 4.5 or 5.0 will be out!
At least let us unlock the BL so we can get KK on there ourselves. Sheesh.

I was planning to wait until the Z3 for my next upgrade, with the hopes of native wireless charging as that is the feature I wish for the most. I can say though that if we are looking at a 5+ month wait for Kit Kat, my Z1s will end up on eBay and will be the last carrier branded device I buy for a while.
Sony promised Kitkat update by Q1 2014, we should get it before end of this month.

The only thing I'll give to tmobile is that they have to implement wifi calling. At least thats some excuse. With ATT, Verizon, and all the other ones, they don't have to do anything but add bloatware that probably needed no change anyway.
Microsoft is doing it right as of now with their developer update program thing (I forgot what it's called). Opt-in, skip the carriers, and get your updates when the manufacturer releases it, not the carrier.
Those of you saying April 2014, have you seen anything from Sony explicitly state a Z1s timeframe ? (Link ?)
I've seen tons of articles/blogs talking about the Z, Z1, Ultra, Tablet Z etc. getting KitKat, but I have not seen anything mentioned about the Z1s.

The Z1s is the same as the Z1...let's be real here, the only difference is T-Mobile. Again, I say 2-3 months after the Z1 gets it. I'd be surprised if we got it sooner but not shocked, no way it takes longer than that though.

Given that the xperia z just got 4.3 today when the International model got it in November/December, I'm not so sure when it comes to T-Mobile and their track record updating Sony phones.

I think I might be trading my Z1s in for an LG G2, or maybe a Nexus 5... When I bought this phone, I didn't expect it to be such a fringe device, with no Root, or unlocked bootloader.
It's a nice phone, with fantastic specs, 32GB, and a wonderful screen... but I'm getting a bad feeling about the speed of updates, and never achieving root.

I have a strong feeling they will let the z2 sell for 3-6 months or so before releasing kit kat.
it would just make more sense for sony to do this atleast from a marketing position,
besides we only just got jelly bean 4.3 in February
si id estimate a july-september kit kat launch

Who will stay with Moto after the Ultra/Maxx/Mini?

My last two phones have been Motorola. Functionally speaking they are pretty good and my Maxx has been the most solid phone I have owned. There is a fly in the ointment though. The back cover on multiple phones which have been replaced all creak and squeak after a few months of ownership.
For this reason I am sitting tight until the next ultimate handset comes out that can functionally one-up this phone. One that is built solid but light and has the big battery or super efficient tech to go for days like the Maxx does.
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I too have a "creaking" back cover...specifically up by the power button/volume rocker...
That being said...I was always a big Moto fan..and then switched because I HAD to have the Galaxy S3 when it dropped...and that was the WORST cell phone related mistake of my life..
I couldn't wait to dump that thing and get back to Moto...I just hope that they decide to continue the Droid line along with the X line...
I am almost 100% sure that my next phone will be a Motorola...

Droid 2, Droid 4, Droid MAXX. They've all been tanks. I had two Droid 4s that both got wet and they both pulled through until months later... Hardware wise and build quality wise I have no complaints.

I have had several Motorolas: the droid 1 a855, Droid Razr Maxx, and now the Droid Maxx. I loved the root-ability of the first two, although the Droid Razr Maxx was a beeatch. Now that I'm on the latest droid Maxx, it really sucks that it can't be rooted, at least since that chinese guy got caught, and I'm stuck with a slower-than-it-should-be device, which I cannot customize. I will only stick with Motorola if they don't lock the bootloader on the next one, but I doubt that will happen. Looks like I will get a nexus next.

Moto for life...
It's way too early for me to tell. I'll see what's available at upgrade time and decide then. This phone will be great until then.
I've had over a dozen Moto phones starting with the original brick and almost every flagship phone since then. I've strayed a couple times in the last 20 years and quickly came back.
I'll stay with my flagship Moto Dev's unless Lenovo messes with the built like a tank phones that we have enjoyed. If I can't drop it in a pool or river(true stories), dry it out and use it the next day, I don't want it lol.

I just want to get out from under Verizon. That being said the functionality of these phones is awesome. So unless Google uses these new features in the next Nexus i'm jumping to the new Moto X on AT&T or the One from One plus.
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm not expecting to stick with Motorola, but I'm not necessarily opposed to it. I've been relatively happy with my Maxx- battery life has been far better than any other phone I've had (particularly coming from a Galaxy Nexus), which is really what drove me to the Maxx instead of the HTC One.
It seems like battery life of other phones is improving, taking away the primary distinguishing factor that brought me to Motorola. I haven't been completely happy with the performance of some apps on the Maxx, and the screen resolution could use a bump, so I'm going to prioritize those things a little higher next time around.
I'm really interested in seeing what happens with the Android Silver program. It would be tough for me to move off Verizon. Assuming Verizon participates in Android Silver, that's probably the closest thing Verizon users will get to a Nexus-like experience.
There is a new phone out every other week....
...from some company or other. So there is no way to tell what will be the best price vs performance choice a year and a half from now when my contract expires again.
I have to say thought that even though I have had root on previous Android Phones (Droid 1 and Droid 3) I don't really miss it on my Max. The biggest reason I wanted it on previous phones was to get rid of all the crap that I never used. But with the Maxx it seems like there is 1. less crap to begin with and 2. A lot of it can be disabled (including a lot of the verizon stuff) using the regular android settings menu. So I'm not particularly missing root on this phone.
On my Droid 1, late in its life I did start messing with custom roms just for fun. Funny thing is that I still have that Droid 1 sitting here on my desk running Cyanogen Mod 7.2 (think its .2 - don't remember for sure). It doesnt have cellular access anymore but it still works around the house as a WiFi only device.
PS: I was not sorry to see the Droid 3 go away. That one never lived up to my hopes for it. I liked the form factor and I do sometimes miss the physical keyboard but the CPU always seemed slow and I almost immediately regretted getting a 3G device rather than holding out a bit longer for a 4G phone.
I am very impressed with my Maxx, even today. I don't trust Verizon, and am leery of Lenovo. I want to continue with this company's awesome path that started with Google's purchase, but I am not sure that Lenovo will allow that. I am also disappointed that thanks to Verizon I am still running 4.4.0.
If they release a 64gb Moto whatever with a super battery, and the quality stays the same, I will stick with them barring further course changes for the company strategy.
My last 2 smartphones have been Motorola Droids and I love both of them. Unless in the future they remove the things I love about the phone (NFC, Qi Charging, Awesome Battery) I don't see myself using a different brand.
When using other phones in the store, they just don't do it for me. I do love the Android experience on this latest phone.
I am ready to leave Verizon because of their scheming ways.
In the store moments ago the sales reps are telling a customer that his only option to get a new phone is to give up unlimited data or buy outright. Did not mention device payment plan. Shysters.

...or at least how I did it. Don't get your phone at the Verizon Store. Order it online from Verizon (not from Amazon, wirefly, ect or any other third party - direct from Verizon). Along the way choose the option to "keep my existing plan". It let me keep my unlimited data plan that's been grandfathered for me ever since my first smart phone way back when (was a Samsung i760 Windows Mobile if anyone cares). I chose to "pick up in store" even though I had ordered on line. They guys at the store couldn't believe I still had unlimited data. They said they thought that couldn't be done.
I will stay with my Droid Mini. It has the best combination of size, power, apps, and now with it able to utilize the XLTE speeds makes it even better. I am just not that interested in getting a phone that I have to carry in hand vice in my pocket because every phone out now is 5" plus. I swear most newer phones are nearing the size of my Nexus 7 LOL.
I may jump ship if one came out with either 64Gb or SD card slot.

The Moto E has an SD card slot and the newer release of the Moto G is getting one too. I don't know if this is an indication that Moto is changing its philosophy with the Lenovo merger (Google doesn't like SD Cards) or just an acknowledgement that these "lesser phones" don't have enough on board storage to be useful without one. The E for example has only 4 GB storage and according to the article I read, has only 2.2 GB left for the user after the OS and system apps are installed.

I would lean towards the latter and it being a cost saving move.
These are Verizon phones
The title lists only the Droid series - Ultra/ Mini and Maxx.
The 'real' Motorola phones are the X, G and E for now.
So, question should be rephrased to "Who will stay with Verizon after the Ultra/Maxx/Mini?"
I am not in the US and using the Droid Maxx. My earlier phone - Motorola Defy - is still working after 3 years and several CM installs.
The hardware is pretty strong on that one and the build quality is good. The phone got wet several times in the rain and there have been no permanent issues due to water.
I cannot say the same for the Droid Maxx. It would be risking too much for me (I paid twice the amount to acquire a Droid Maxx, to what I paid to get a Defy three years ago.)
Hence I have put it into an Otterbox Defender series case to protect the phone since one fall on the floor will kill the phone.
The build quality of Droid Maxx is just like any other phone in the market perhaps.
But there are positives for sure.
1. The LCD has no bleeding, which I feel speaks of good quality.
2. The speaker has good volume and great quality (for music lovers)
3. The battery is awesome. For my limited use, it easily goes to the end of third day for me.
The Otterbox Defender adds a lot of bulk and the inbuilt screen protector reduces the touch sensitivity significantly (especially the virtual buttons).
But since I wish to use the phone for three more years, I think this is the price I have to pay for the beast.
I also bought a used Razr HD Maxx XT926 for my dad last year. The phone is really nice (and the 4.4.2 update is like the icing on the cake).
Luckily I have bootloader unlocked on that one, so I can retain control for a long time.

There's no convincing you huh, only trying to help. Honestly I have been using a nexus 5 since October '13 and upgraded to the mxp last month. I don't see much difference at all. In fact, my nexus 5 was more buttery smooth. Had I just purchased a battery case to extend the battery life, I would go back to my nexus 5 in a heartbeat. I'm stuck with this mxp now since I'm passed the refund period. I'd suggest the previously mentioned devices if you're on the fence. Good luck

I think you'll be really happy with the Moto X Play, yes it doesn't have the latest greatest Snapdragon but there are so many pluses to this phone. I have been very happy with mine, I don't have any of the issues like lag, stutter, etc. Not really sure why some people have had them but I would say they are in the minority.
The pluses are:
Great screen - better brightness than iPhone 6 so outside visibility is wonderful.
Overall the screen looks pretty good - good colour accuracy & viewing angles.
Much improved camera, it can now hold its own with the competition.
As compared to previous Motorola phones.
Great battery - class leading IMO.
Fairly good build quality - only small niggle is power & volume keys could be slightly better (my phone doesn't seem bad).
micro SD card slot - FTW.
Changeable back - different colours are available.
Fairly clean Lollipop - not a lot of extra bloatware, and what's there works well as reported by Motorola users.

Current phone HTC One M7. Loved the build quality but my speakers have seen better days (crackling). No more support.
Considered the Nexus 6p, similar build to m7 but having held one it's too darn big (thumb pilot here). 5x plastic no thanks.
The One X looks the part and is identical in size to the m7. I'm still in contract so the price is appealing. But is it an upgrade?

Main concerns:
Battery is smaller than OPO. Wifi doesn't support AC which isn't th3e biggest deal as it has N support.
Band 17 in USA. Other people mentioned that Operating Band 4 is still 1700mhz so this may work on ATT.
Main issue for me is the lack of nfc, seems like One Plus thinks they can ignore it...

Same here with the m7.
A 5" phone is my sweet spot. The design is nice. The processor is a clear upgrade to the 600. It has a gig more ram. The storage is lacking, but it does support sd cards. My last phone with sd support ended with a permanent loop trying to load/scan the card... So I'm wary of this. According to Pei, oxygen OS is getting a 6.0 update... He just didn't say when. Also, oxygen has some of its own homegrown 6.0 fearures (doze mode, permissions, etc.). How good they are, I don't know.
I'm feeling very intrigued by this phone. The invite system and faq page saying it takes weeks to fill an order once places has me second guessing.

Quality, price and size has me interested. Particularly the size, bigger screen but same size overall. Thought I had to have the 6p but a mate got one and I'm not interested in a phone that needs two hands to use comfortably.

Don't buy the one plus x. After having issues with my oneplus one and two, I'm done with one plus as a whole!
The only good thing with the x is they went with the 801 instead of the mediatek crap as the rumors had said.

Yikes. I use att in the US. I need to double check on this before I pull the trigger and order (or more so, get in line to order).

Yeah I'm on cricket. Their site lists some bands but I'm waiting on clarification.
I've got the opo for now so no hurry on my end, I'll be waiting for reviews

What oppo phones work in the US on our bands?
Sent from my secret lair in a hidden mountainside.
The us or international versions of opo and opt. X works with a chunk of them but looks like its missing 12 and 17 that tmo and att use but they each have like 3-4 that they use.

Oneplus one had yellow screen, then developed touchscreen issues. They customer service (lack of) is horrible.
Oneplus two had home button issue, overheated issues, and oxygenOS is alpha at best. Lag lag lag.
They are not ready to be a major player in the smartphone world. So if you have any issues(and you probably will) get ready to wait like two months just to get a replacement device. Emailing then and getting one response back a day, sending in pictures, and videos to prove to them your issues, for them then to stop emailing you completely to then get some other rep asking you to do the same thing all over again. That is if you get a invite.

Same here. I have not tried the OnePlus Two but I had a One and sold it because of the touchscreen issues... :/
Right now I'm looking into buying a phone for my girlfriend though, and the X seems like a good option... Between the X and the Moto G3, which would you choose?

I had a 2gb moto g and I would choice it over the x. Especially with warranty issues if any down the road. While the x has better specs, the g is water resistant, and you can moto maker is depends on where you live(certain countries) battery life is also good on the g, and the screen is nice but the x screen with amoled will pop better but with amoled screen you will most likely have screen burn!!!!

They are a dodgy company in every way.
Customer support nearly non-existent. Terrible quality assurance/control. I'd just stay away altogether, especially now they're using OxygenOS which is basically stock android.. But far worse.
Honestly, it's just one let down after another after another.
I'd sooner go a Xperia Z5 Compact.
1. Currently using my old Nexus 4 after breaking my Moto X 2014.
2. I actually bought the Nexus 5X, but returned it because I didn't like the size.
3. Size and price.

Yup, it's settled, screw OnePlus. I'm going for the G3
Why do you people come here just to sh!t all over a product? Obvious that several of you aren't buying one, what are you doing here?
I had no issues whatsoever with my Oneplus 1 and enjoyed a pretty robust development community. The phone was just too big for me.
Then I bought a Moto G3, which I like a lot, size is perfect.. but it is a bit laggy and 720p. I keep thinking- if this thing just had an 801 (which is still a completely legit cpu). Bam! Oneplus comes out with this. I'm even surprised at the 3GB's of ram for that price. I'm definitely buying one. Invite's already claimed.
Granted, I heard of the nightmare customer support I luckily never had to contact. I've heard of the touch screen issues, which my +1 never had. I'm not saying the company or the QC is perfect, but for $250 i'm willing to take a chance on a company that has already sold me a solid device.
Bottom line-That size, that price, decent specs, I'm in.

That's interesting I was thinking of buying a 5x, but it did look a little bigish to me for just 5.2". I'm glad I waited for this phone.
They could easily try to get $299 out of this phone. The price totally seals the deal for me.
Was, until I found out the 2nd SIM slot is shared with microSD. That means you either have dual SIM without microSD, or single SIM + microSD.

Australian Moto Z Play Thread

This thread is open to all people however discussion will be kept to Australian issues related to the Moto Z Play.
To start of with has anyone bought one yet. It was only released here 3 days ago.
I'm very likely to buy one before Christmas, unless miracle happens and Moto Z Force is sold outside of Verizon.
whats the model number of aus version?
xt1635-04?
Im not sure as its not available instore yet. Advertised but not available.
I bought one from Harvey Norman, model is XT1635-02

Yes I did, probably could have gotten it for less elsewhere/online but couldn't be bothered waiting as my current phone is in poor shape.
I got one from Harvey Norman on Friday, got it down to $667. I've bought loads of phones and electronics stuff from overseas before, thought I'd get this locally because I've never had an issue so surely my luck will run out.
Incredible battery, great reception, Moto Display will not function at all even after factory resets but on the other hand, it's not distracting me flashing/breathing so I'm not too fussed about it. Feels like a house brick, l'm happy with it. People reckon the low light camera is crap. It's certainly not on par with say, an S7, but it's not as bad as people reckon.

Good to know, I might get one this weekend! I really like this phone but $699 is a bit too expensive for me. The exact same model (Dual sim with same LTE bands) is only AUD480 from Amazon Mexico.

And you're right, the HTC 10 is at JB for $899 right now, which is a lot more phone for the money, and I very nearly got that instead, but decided I wanted the big battery. Try and talk them down a bit, they'll try and get extended warranty out of you for $120 or whatever though.
Like I said, sooner or later my luck would run out with these overseas purchases, but I've got a family now, I need a phone and I can't be stuffed with overseas warranty processes if it came to that. Everyone's different, I think Clove has them pretty cheap as well.

Too bad Clove only sells the official UK version which is single SIM, otherwise I would have bought one already! Maybe I should ask my wife if she really needs the dual SIM....
$667 price is great!
thinking of using the amex/harvey cashback deal and get one myself.
only thing holding me back in the camera quality in low light, however anandtech's review seems to show its not as bad as what the rest of the 'net is saying.
Thinking of getting one too, using the AMEX cashback deal from HN
Although, I am currently using Nexus 6P on 7.0 - wondering if Z Play is a downgrade for me
I have read positive reviews all over though, and I sort of need a change from 6P (year old now)
What do current users suggest - keep my Nexus 6P or get the Z Play (the price is tempting, thanks to AMEX deal)

I am currently using both phones. The Nexus 6P is so attractive due to latest software and features, especially with developer previews, but the Moto Z Play has been fantastic. I am a medium user, but with whatever optimization they have going the battery life is phenomenal! Off of the first charge I got over 4 days with 8+ hours screen time. Haven't noticed any performance hiccups but I am not a gamer. Received the phone on Friday and just charged it again this morning, Wednesday.
So the choice amounts to latest software faster or best battery life (at least that I have experienced on Android) ever.

Nexus 6P sort of renewed my interest with 7.0, but battery life has taken a turn for the worse, so yeah that's that. I guess I just need a change now, and MZP seems to be the best in price-range to be my daily driver for the next 12 months
I am curious though, are you evaluating yourself, which one you will keep in the long run ?
Just received my moto z play from HN for $660 (had $300 worth of gift cards so effectively paid $360). Worth trying to haggle with them now since both Officeworks and Good Guys also sells them and they sell the white models to boot unlike HN who only sells the Black model.
