Does Xperia X Compact support: VoLTE, Band 12 and WiFi Calling on T-Mobile? - Sony Xperia X Compact Questions & Answers

Hi guys!
Was planning to buy Xperia X Compact, but need to find out if it supports T-Mobile features, such as Band 12, VoLTE and maybe WiFi Calling(not the priority for me). Any person tried this phone on T-Mobile?

I just got this phone yesterday and it's running fine on T-Mobile though I'm in a band 4 area right now. FrequencyCheck (https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/GNNDM/sony-xperia-x-compact-f5321-td-lte-sony-kugo-ss) says it supports band 12, but I have yet to experience it myself.

Technically speaking the phone does support it, but would be interesting to see if phone does support it on T-Mobile network.

Time will tell on this one. Tmobile has been picking up a lot of 700 mhz spectrum lately but it's not all deployed yet. I think it's mainly due to awaiting FCC approval.

Are you guys using the US version? I ordered the UK version and I'm sending the US back to Amazon because I want the fingerprint scanner. Don't feel like flashing the phone. I'm assuming they have the same bands for Tmobile. Well hopefully they are the same.

This weekend I made it outside town where T-Mo has band 12 coverage and it was working fine on my phone according to the LTE Discovery app.

I'm using the US version. Flashing to enable the fingerprint sensor was pretty easy.

Hopefully nothing goes bad on you within the first year. You lose your warranty with the UK version. The US version is so incredibly easy to flash firmware. You just launch a program and click a few options.

Band 12 works fine for me. I believe the phone supports all T-Mobile LTE bands, I get pretty good speed tests too.
I don't know if or how wifi calling would work. I've never seen a way to get it on non T-Mobile branded devices, I would certainly be interested in enabling it though.

I think Nougat has wifi calling baked into Android itself if I remember correctly. So hopefully the update comes soon.

I'm debating on buying the X Compact or the X Performance. The Performance has a 5 inch screen, not much bigger than the Compact. Anyone with any thoughts on the X Performance ?
Thank You, Vinny

Can you test whether it actually supports VoLTE?
When connected to band 12, try making a call: if it drops to H+ then it supports band 12 but no VoLTE.
If it stays on LTE during the call, it actually works with VoLTE

It does not support VoLTE.
The phone does but TMOb has not certified it to work on their network.

Project-Fi LG V20 versions/bands

Hello, I'm new to this stuff, but does anybody know what version of the V20 (TMo, Sprint, 996, etc) bands match Project-Fi's bands the closest? I have a T-Mo V2 currently on Fi but it sometimes doesn't ring when I receive phone calls. I'm guessing it is because it is missing a band or something (or maybe it's just a defective phone) and that's why the call doesn't go through.
Thanks in advance!
My understanding for it to work properly you need the pixel or the nexus 6 or might also include the nexus 5. Any other phone you will run in to issues as they say only the T-Mobile band will work. Might be why you are having issues with your lg phone.
Sent from my LG-H910 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the quick response. I know it isn't "officially" supported by Fi. I'm just trying to get as many bands as possible to work with. I understand I won't have quite as good of a signal as I would if I had a Pixel but I can't stand the huge bezels and smaller screen. I'm wondering if I might have better luck with the 996 instead of the TMo version.
Well I'm pretty sure Fi uses Sprint and T-Mobile at the same time. Since Sprint is a CDMA network, a T-Mobile phone isn't going to be able to use it, except for VoLTE, and even then probably not.
I don't know too much info about WCDMA (TMO) and CDMA (Sprint) band usage by the two carriers, so I can't give too much info there.
T-Mobile uses LTE bands 1(?), 2/4, 4/66, 12 (there's weird frequency stuff where B4 matches B2 on one of its frequencies. 4 and 66 use the same frequency range). Sprint uses 25, 26, 41 (don't ask, I have no idea, since VZ and ATT use 2,4,13 and 2,4,17 respectively, and 17 is a subset of 12).
The T-Mobile V20 supports 1,2,3,4,5,7,12,13,17,20 (some of these aren't mentioned by the FCC because they weren't tested, and LG's site doesn't mention them. T-Mobile has the full list, except for 17, but that's just 12 like I said earlier). WCDMA-wise, it supports I, II, IV, V. It has no CDMA support nor Sprint LTE support.
Sprint's variant supports LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12/17, 25, 26, 41. It also happens to support all the WCDMA bands the T-Mobile variant does, plus the 900MHz frequency.
The US996 is the same story as the LS997, but with the addition of B13 and B20, minus B25 and B41. I can't find info, but I assume the WCDMA bands are the same.
Strangely enough, the LS997 has more current functionality in the US than the US996. I recommend you go for that. It is $793 instead of $770 like the TMO, but that's $7 less than the US996, and it'll work fine on T-Mobile, ATT (if you roam) and Sprint. Roaming on Verizon will be alright in most places, but the lack of VZ's low frequency band (13), it might have trouble in rural areas. Luckily, you probably won't have to worry about Verizon compatibility (and it probably supports it without mentioning it anyway).
Has anyone got T-Mobile to run on the Verizon v20...I can get text and call to work together all day ,or 4g works all day with out the others. If I get all 3 working at once it keeps cutting off network then comes back on..I've did the APN,and network.Just wondering if it has been done...

Thanks for the very in-depth post. I really appreciate your time and effort. I never even thought about the Sprint version until you said that. Will all those bands be active without unlocking the (Sprint) phone? If so, then that is the phone I'll get.
Thanks again for all the info!

Well unlocking doesn't actually unlock any bands. It just allows use on other carriers. These bands are always available for use. I don't know Sprint's unlocking policy, since I'm on T-Mobile, but check it out. It might be pre-unlocked like Verizon phones.

The VS995 supports all the GSM (2G) frequencies that T-Mobile uses, although it doesn't support as many as the T-Mobile variant, so Canadian coverage might be weird with traditional calls and texts.
It's also missing B4 UMTS, which is a pretty important one. If you're in an area without 2G but with HSPA+, you could have issues. It also doesn't support LTE B12, T-Mobile's low frequency band. This is important to have in cities.

Have you tried a factory reset? Maybe a replacement phone? It might be worth it just to get the V20 from T-Mobile. I know it's more expensive, but it'll probably work.

It is a great phone. I just wish it was more consistent.
My first V20 had severe noise reduction on everything, and weird bumps on the transition from the screen glass to the plastic bezels. One side would be more pronounced than the other. My replacement is better in noise reduction, but it still has those uneven transitions.
My mom's V20 has almost no weird transition, but it does have some noise reduction issues. This phone is weird to say the least
So I just got a Sprint ls997 and when I take the Project-Fi sim card out of my working T-Mo v20 and put it in the Sprint V20 it just shows the invalid sim card icon in the upper right corner (nothing in notifications though). Does that mean I need to unlock the Sprint version of the phone? If so, why didn't I have to unlock the T-Mo version? I looked quickly and couldn't find any websites that would unlock the Sprint V20.
Thanks in advance!

The Sprint phone should be unlocked I think, but if it isn't, they will unlock it for you if you call. Any device made after February 2015 is like that for Sprint.
You're rebooting when you put the SIM In right?
Thanks, I called Sprint and they said it was still tied to the previous owners account. The previous owner said they paid it off and removed it from their account on 12/22 so they called and requested to have it unlocked. Sprint said it would take 3-5 business days after they did paid it off and it would automatically be unlocked. I'm not sure I believe that but we'll see in a couple days.
Yes, the battery was out when I installed the sim card so it was rebooted.
Thanks for all your help and advice!

Just a quick update, according to Sprint, the phone now should be unlocked. Is there a way on the phone I can tell if it is unlocked? When I put a sim card in from another carrier I'm getting the icon at the top of the screen of a sim card with an ! in it. When I try to make a phone call it does not go through. It also doesn't show my phone number or any other info related to the sim card on the phone's info screen.
Any advice?

Does the Xperia X Compact support band 12 and VOLTE on TMobile (with latest update)?

I have spent the better part of an hour searching for a specific answer to these questions. So far, I have found two sources that claim band 12 works on Tmo. However I have only seen one review on Amazon from a couple weeks back that claim the phone does not support volte on Tmo. If it doesn't, that's a deal breaker for me. Can anyone, with the latest update, confirm or deny whether B12 and VOLTE on Tmo is working or not. Thanks very much in advance.
At *#*#4636#*#* testing menu there is band selector for United States and Japan
For sure at Tmo US if there is certification for this handset, VoLTE should be supported

To the best of my knowledge band 12 works. Multiple people here have even posted screenshots with the phone operating on Band 12. Sadly I live in the Chicago area and we are the the last major city to get Band 12. So I cannot personally verify it since it isn't up and running here yet. As for VoLTE that is a two way street. Lately Sony has been working with various providers to get it enabled. Basically it's all good on their end to a degree but for a phone to operate on VoLTE the carrier provider (in this case Tmo) must also flip a switch on their end as well. So in the end yes it probably can but no clue if we will ever get it here in the states. The following is to a link that explains the current situation. http://www.xperiablog.net/2016/11/30/sony-to-add-volte-support-to-xperia-x-concept-shortly/
P.S. Side note the phone info does have a switch for enabling VoLTE provisioning. However for now it does nothing (simply switches back to default radio when exiting the screen).
Oddly enough the switch got turned on for Band 12 in the Chicago area today. And yes it works and it works on UK firmware too.

If you could answer couple of questions that would make things easier for me to get this phone.
1) So when your phone is on band 12 and you make a call, does it stay on that band or goes to band 4?
2) VoLTE is working properly?
3) Any word about having WiFi calling available?
Band 12 works fine. No volte. Other than that it's been flawless on tmobile!

Does the Unlocked V35 include band 71 for t-mobile? I have done a search and the results are not conclusive. I know--or think--it is enabled for T-mobile wifi calling. But I do not know much else.

Thanks very much. I am trying to decide between the V35 (unlocked) and V40. This info helps.
The phone is compatible, however the carrier may not allow it.
T mobile for example only allows band 71, wifi calling and volte on their phones.
In other words: in addition to the right hardware support you need to have the right modem software and rom

Has anyone know of a way to see what bands are enabled and or a way to disable some bands?

All of the bands on my ULM phone are enabled, screenshots are included. Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE works. I cannot show you a screenshot from LTE Discovery of Band 71, since it is not enabled in the Philadelphia metro area, yet. A couple of months ago, I did see it pop up on my phone when I was traveling through the Miami metro area.

You have to use an LG dialer, not the Google's dialer.

IMHO the SM-G9750 (Hong Kong) is the best variant. Why? A number of reasons. There's very little Bloatware, works on all CDMA and GSM Networks, has Dual SIM's, Bootloader Unlocked and most importantly a Snapdragon SoC.
Mine is working great on US T- mobile out of the box. I have VoLTE, wifi calling and data speeds are great. Nice to actually have the best phone on the planet for once. Looking forward to root and adblocking!
I received the S10+ 128gb SM9750 from hong kong since last thursday. I couldnt be happier.
I plan to upgrade to 1TB sometime in April when the prices go down.
Best SoC, faster updates and a great network coverage.
If you have any questions, ask away.
Work Hong Kong version on Germany?

T-Mobile's CSC Code is TMB, the Hong Kong (SM-G9750) Active and Available CSC Code is TGY. This is the first time I've seen VoLTE and Wifi Calling working on a US Carrier's Network without changing the Hong Kong TGY CSC Code. How did you accomplish this?

I just put in the SIM card from my T-Mobile branded Galaxy S7. Apparently US carrier firmware is embedded and installed automatically depending on the SIM card. Pretty neat. My Samsung Pay is still the HK version but works fine. I'm missing tmo video calling, real time texting and advanced messaging though. Also phone does not support band 71.
where did you buy from?I also would like to buy HK variant S10 plus G9750 with SD855 and dual sim.But I heard it is missing band 71. For me VOLTE and WIFI calling is very important. Please advise. Thanks

VoLTE and wifi calling on TMo work great, but I've found the phone is not configured for carrier aggregation, which negatively affects download speeds. Oddly enough, upload speeds are generally great. I got the the phone on eBay from seller "never-msrp"

As an example, from home my S7 (with CA) generally downloads @ ~75 Mbps, and the S10+ is around 35. Samsung pay works fine but is Hong Kong version (Chinese ads etc.) Band 71 (600 MHz) is generally used in rural areas but is likely to become more important in cities in the next few years.

35Mbps is still quite fast. I wonder if that is with 2x CA. I have Exynos with limited CA and it ranges between 15 to 30 Mbps om Tmobile

I checked from the service menu (*#0011#) while doing a speed test and it's definitely not doing CA. I've watched it happen from there on my S7.
What's annoying is that it initially spikes to ~55 and then backs down steadily, like it's being throttled, or waiting for another tower to pick up the slack or something. Upload is the opposite, it starts slow and steadily climbs, almost always to a higher number than the download.
I'm in Manhattan and mostly have excellent coverage except for the 1928 building I work in that's built like a brick ****house. Wifi and HD calling are a must there. The signal repeaters are always on the fritz in my part of the building.

Thank you brother.Your answers helped me to made a decision.I already ordered 2 today and going to sell my US unlocked S10+.BTW do you have in built call recording while making a call? That's a common feature present in most Asian market phones especially in China and Hongkong.Have a nice day.

No call recording option. Also, the camera shutter sound can't be turned off because of HK upskirt laws. But if you put the phone on silent you won't hear it. Also in order to get the VoLTE and wifi calling status bar icons you need to pull down the status bar, hit the three dots and select button order. These features are apparently installed after you put the sim in. I didn't notice the wifi calling one before, but it's there. Enjoy your phones, they are truly amazing

That would be the exynos model your after then it has volte ,wifi calling out of the box...plus it has a much better single core than the sd 855 and faster updates seems to be more battery friendly to as i also get 8-9 hours sot... exynos is allot more powerful ...qualcomm payout more cash to make the sd 855 sound more better

OnePlus 8 Pro iN2020 version?

Looking at eBay for the OnePlus 8 Pro has led me to a few listings with the title having "iN 2020"
Is this a specific region designation? Does it differ from the USA model at all?
If anyone has any additional information, that'd be great. Thank you!

IN2020 refers to the International one, that's the one I got from OP to the US. It also means it's unlocked.
I have the IN2025 and also in US. Bought straight from OnePlus.

Does that version work with dual Sim?
Did you get the 256Gb green version?
How is it working for you guys in USA?

It is the 256Gb glossy back. So far I have seen no defects. It has been working good for me. I am coming from the 7 pro and love this device!
I opted for the iN2020 from eBay also. Works flawlessly. Took the latest OTA(10.5.6) and retained root. No issues with 5G on T-mo. Glad I got it instead of waiting for stock from OnePlus.
I just received this model today and the bootloader unlock is greyed out
EDIT: Fixed

IN2020 denotes the region which in this case means it is made for the Chinese market. You may find certain bands are missing so may not work correctly on some carriers.

That's not actually 5G I'm sure, use cell mapper and see if it says LTE+NR or just LTE, If it doesn't show +NR, you're getting a false 5G flag that is reporting a 5G capable tower but you aren't actually connecting to 5G.
See the screenshots below for comparison:

Thank you for this! So these towers can't emit a 5g signal. Do you know why?
Along with the differences, can anyone on TMobile confirm this model works with dual Sims? Wanted to get it on eBay but US versions arent active yet, so need international version as long as 5g works on dual SIM.

Can you send to me modem log when phone shows LTE+NR same time and NR Connected?
OnePlus 8 Pro IN2020 China model support only n41 5G band used in USA. I try list all supported combos used in TMUS: https://cacombos.com/device?model=IN2020&combolist=america_tmus_plmns . This model example doesn't support widely used n71 low band 5G.

T-Mobile is using the upper later indicator (a cell site that supports NR ENDC capability) to show the 5G signal icon in your status bar, not actual NR connectivity. So when you see the 5G indicator, it just means you're connected to a site and band that supports aggregating LTE+NR (ENDC), not that you're necessarily connected to NR.
So even if your phone does not support any T-Mobile 5G NR bands, it will still show 5G in the status bar if the cell site you're connected to supports aggregating LTE and NR together. T-Mobile even has cell sites broadcasting the upper later indicator with no 5G NR signal nearby, so even phones with T-Mobile NR bands will show the 5G icon a lot of the time without an actual NR signal.
The IN2020 does not support T-Mobile N71 NR.
