[WORK-AROUND] Note 7 Gear VR Oculus Ban/Disabled - T-Mobile Note 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Very simple work-around to be able to use Gear VR on your Note 7. YOU MUST BE ROOTED IN ORDER FOR THIS TO WORK.
1. Open system/ build.prop with a root browser
2. Edit. ro.product.model=SM-N930T ------> SM-G935T
3. REBOOT! Profit.
I would highly suggest changing to SM-G935T ONLY when you are about to use Gear VR. Then change it back to SM-N930T and reboot when you are finished. It may cause issues with Note 7 related files of you do not

There was an update to the VR apk that blocked the note7 off the list of compatible devices. We need to find someone with the older apk so we can sideload it.

I thought I had the older version of Oculus but I don't... I looked under my settings and I have. 2.15.4...I also had my auto updates enabled...again...::

I'll keep my note 7 thank you!
Ok, quick public(ish) rant. I love my original note 7 that I have run for hours in my new GearVR with zero issues. I want to keep my note 7 as it is the best phone I have ever owned and it makes me sad that Samsung/Oculus/AT&T over reacted over a low percentage of failures; however, hopefully this will encourage Samsung to go back to removable batterys and throw in an IR blaster.
Now to the current thread.
I want to continue to use Samsung Pay so rooting, to my knowledge, is currently not an option and side loaded an old version of Oculus Home will still no luck.
So currently I can use the GearVR disabler and use Google Cardboard and whatever other non-oculus VR apps but the polished Oculus apps I am seriously missing.
Is anyone else not planning to give up their amazing note 7s?

I'm not giving up mine ? those MF can try but they're not getting it back! Btw I don't want to hear "but you're putting ppl in danger!" I keep watch of it every time I charge it, I NEVER charge it unattended, and if it gets warm in the slightest bit I turn it off.

It can happen anytime, not only when charging. And they will probably IMEI block you eventually.

All the apks for oculus?
Does anyone have all the apks that their willing to share, because in getting the dreaded network error when trying to download?

I'm looking for this as well. I'm keeping my Note7 till they brick it. Then I may root it and play around with new Roms.

Is there anyone out there that can help me with the apks?
I'm frustrated sitting here with my brand new VR gear and no software, because it won't download the necessary apks. Can someone help please.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the original note7 fires were only while at the end of charging right? Only the replacement phones that came out had a fire while not charging or anything. I've seen people talking about these were two different problems from the original to the replacement phones.
And last week I read an article that there were about 1 million still in use. Up until the replacement came out have there been ANY new problems from the originals? The affected devices seemed to go up quickly at the beginning of the launch... Mine has never gotten hot either.
Anyhow, I too would like the older occulus apk if anyone finds them.
Another off topic question, on past rooted phones you could temporarily unroot. If I'm reading correctly once rooted you can't unroot and use Samsung Pay at all? That stinks, I miss root.

cool, it doesnt even work.

Rooted Verizon Note 7, i never had the oculus setup. When i attempted it, I got the Block notice, changed the build.prop and rebooted. The good news is i no longer get the block notice, but now i get a "no network connection" error that others are getting ( similar to "httxx://forums.oculus.com/vip/discussion/28012/network-error-always ). I only needed to activate it once to get the 6 free apps that came with the promotion so this is a bit frustrating.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Samsung support getting bounced around various departments until finally they sent my request "to the escalation team" for the promotion content to be switched to a different IMEI (I have an S6 as well). Most likely it will fall into a black hole, but we'll see.

A few things, there was never a determination of when in the charge cycle the first batch would fail. The 60% fix went out but never a confirmation of its success when you take into account that sammy doesnt even know the root cause.
Also temperature was never a determination of a device possibly failing, yes cooler running devices is a good thing but not an indicator of good or bad when it comes to this particular issue. Also no reports of abnormally hot devices prior to a burn up.
Lastly it isn't that you cannot unroot, you just cannot un-trip the efuse that is tied to knox and thus prevents samsung pay from working.

So any hope about solution gear vr - note 7 or not? i think i must go my lovely phone back to samy coz gear vr problem!

I do not understand the stupidity of samsung, block the app of gear vr, for not to burn our face the device! This can happen when simply talking on phone. and this would be more serious.
I will not go back to the device, and will not succumb to blackmail. I have the device a month and works perfectly.

[Q] Re-enabling a Nexus7 that was "remotely disabled" by Google?

So I have kind of an interesting situation. A few weeks ago, I ordered a new Nexus7 8gb for a gift direct from the Google Play store, and shipped via UPS. On the day it was delivered, UPS's tracking showed "Delivered to the front door" however it never made it there. So I called Google Play Support and they had me reply to an e-mail with the words "I consent" to allow them to refund the charge and "remotely disable the device" to make it "unusable as a phone or as a computing device for any purpose".
So I did that and they promptly refunded me, and I placed a new order, which ended up being delivered with no problems. However, yesterday my neighbor knocked on my door with the original shipment in hand, apparently it had been delivered next door, and they were away at the time so they hadn't seen the package until then. Out of curiosity I booted up the tablet fully expecting it to be bricked once I connected it to wifi or at most after I had attached my google account or tried to do anything on the Play Store app. However, it has so far worked flawlessly with no visible restrictions, I even updated all the apps and performed a system update with no issues.
Just to be on the safe, and more honest, side though I sent Google a follow-up e-mail to let them know what happened and that the device had not been disabled. They responded just to say that it "can be disabled at any time from now" and to make sure anything I had on there is backed up.
So my question(s) to you guys are, first has anyone had any experience with this, aka Google remotely disabling the device, and know what actually happens to it? And second, since it appears Google has no desire to collect the hardware back from me, is there any way to bring it back to life after that the disabling action has happened, via a hard-wipe and using custom ROMs ect, or will it be essentially a $200 paperweight?
Thanks!
I think, tho maybe wrong but when they send out the "kill" signal it goes out for limited time so that if the item is not switched on during that period then when it is switched on it could/should be fine.
I may be wrong but past experience with a found iphone would suggest this to be the case.
As for the last bit I would as assume that once killed only google can breathe life back into it.

Ah ok, well if thats the case maybe I should just power it off and wait awhile before attempting to use it, if theres a chance I would be able to avoid their "kill signal" altogether.
I just assumed at the very least they would blacklist the tablet's IMEI/serial immediately, so that even if the device itself wasn't bricked it wouldn't be unable to utilize any of google's services.
Flash a custom ROM and recovery asap I say.
Good on you for being honest and telling Google about what happened. Good karma goes a long way! I'm more surprised though they didn't request you send it back to them.

Yeah, I was surprised too when they didn't respond back with instructions to send it back to them or at least have UPS come pick it up, since it was UPS who was really the one at fault.
It just seems like a waste to me that a shiny new Nexus 7 will now most likely just become trash, which is what led me to ask here if there was anything I could do to save it from an early grave.

I'm not sure how its wrong if I notified them that I recovered the device, and all they said was "it will be disabled soon" and made no mention or request to have it sent back to them? Its apparent they don't want or need it back (I'm guessing the costs they'd incur in return shipping, handling, repackaging it, ect. would make it not really worth it for them to try to resell.), so is it wrong I'm trying to get some use out of it?
Also I believe I read that they file a claim with UPS in these instances, so most likely receive some type of reimbursement from UPS to at least mitigate the loss, which is probably another reason they haven't asked me to send it back. *shrug*
@shibbybypass - regarding your offer I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet, probably going to just let it sit awhile and see what happens. But I will keep your offer in mind.

Yes you are
He contacted the vendor, they did not request the unit back. Nothing wrong here.
Now if he didn't contact google, and was trying to get around the kill signal; that's another story. But unless you are calling the OP a liar.. nothing to see here.
Dude what is the status of the device now ???
Is it still working, I have a friend with the same case
But his device still on and google said its scheduled to be disabled

We owned computer / networking business in the mid 80s to mid 90s.. what happens is the seller files a claim with ups. they are compensated for there loss. UPS Does not care about the item at that point . UNLESS Google files to ups item has been found. Then ups will ask for it But only Sometimes.Obviously google is not taking this second step.. Im sure this happens more then you would think. UPS Looses alot of packages. they just handle so many more its not so well known..
As far as them killing or locking the device.. Its only for google WALLET And the wallet nfc function. If you unlock lock then re-unlock the device it will have a new nfc id .
Here is how i know the above sentence..
First i bought a 8 gb nexus 7 from play store. (8 was out of stock ). It had bad screen lift. I called google and they said i could it order a 16 then gat a rma for the 8 when the 16 comes.. So the day i got the 16 gb . before i took it out of the box. I called google got the rma for 8 gb. Got the email telling me to disable wallet. I did so.. after i opened the 16 setting it up the screen cracked under (another story i will not get into here) I called google to explain what happened . they told me to send it back and to keep the 8 until i got a replacement for the 16. While setting the 8 gb tablet back up google wallet would NOT Work..
i called google back . they told me to unlock it again . lock it back. Remove it from my wallet account.. Then i could unlock it again and set it up...
this i done. and it worked fine. So it makes me think they do NOT RENDER THE DEVICE DISABLED Only the wallet features..
sorry for. such a long story ..
since you asked them if they wanted it back and they did not . i would say your fine with keeping it.. Keep the emails documenting you contacting them.
Good Luck

Brand new Note4 freeze and reboot

Humm...I'm probably one of the unlucky one. I received my note4 yesterday, and the phone kept freeze on me. Once it happened, I have to pull the battery, if I don't eventually it will reboot by itself. I have tried twice factory reset and also removed the sdcard but no help. I haven't install any third party apps except for FB and FB messenger. I called VZ tech support and they told me they didn't see any of my issue being reported yet. They also nice enough tried to located any local verizon store so I can just swap out my phone there, guest what, I'm an unlucky guy. No one has the white one in stock (they do have black one). So I called back VZ and they said they are going to overnight a new one out but I need to pay 299$ deposit (bill to my account, no need to put on credit card). Once I sent back the old device, they will credit back to my account, which is not bad. I just want to post this out here and if anyone ever has issue with your note 4 please feel free to post your experience and how you resolved the issue. Hopefully no one should need to post their issue, it's not FUN at all. Thanks!!!:crying:

Mine froze and rebooted once. I was looking at some pictures on photos backed up to Google+. Didn't do it anymore since than.
I think I found the issue. Every time I put the phone in "Battery saving" mode, let it sits for about 1 hrs and bang it froze. I removed and it's working great. In battery saving mode, the phone is a bit stuttering and laggy and little warm even very low usage, however without saving mode, it super smooth and flying. Well anyway I'm getting a new one from Verizon next week. You guys should try out the battery saving mode to see if you have any issue...Also I heard that they released an update xxxJ4 for note4 which suppose to increase battery life and added more stability but I don't see it for the Verizon model, is anyone has the info on this???
EDIT: nope just froze and reboot again...

You aren't alone. I had to return my Note 4 for the same issue. So far the Samsung rep at Best Buy says it's only effecting VZW phones and it has to do with an update Samsung pushed out. VZW adds crap to their updates and according to Samsung Field Service Support at 8pm CST on Thursday there were 7 issues. We tried factory resetting and a fresh software reload directly from Samsung to no avail .

verizon Note 4 freeze and reeboot
New to forums and postings. This is my 3rd note product, had the 2, 3 and just received the Note 4 3 days ago. Let me start by saying 1 word. FRUSTRATING.....
i have had this p.o.s freeze and reeboot on me not less than 10 times a day since out of the box. It happpens when sitting still, typing, viewing videos, plugged in, not plugged in, case on or off. VERIZON says sorry sir, we have no updates or other reported problems. I Guess the only saving grace is it reboota itself. I sont have to take battey out. My son gote Note 4 at same time...same carrier and no problems. Wife got new note 3 same day hers freezes and she has to pop out battery. New note 4 and note 3 replacements on way. Worst phone i have owned to date.
You are not alone my T-Mobile note 4 is unstable too.
This appears to be a worldwide problem. Many Note4 users are complaining the same thing in my country. IMHO, it could be exynos' problem.
I am still on Kitkat, occasional problems are caused by SwiftKey, which doesn't load sometimes, but I never experienced something like you describe.

Confirmed: Rooting & tripping Knox will disable Samsung Pay

However, we advise you to refrain from rooting your device, as it will disable Samsung Pay, just like KNOX. When you root your device, the integrity gets breached, which is necessary for important and sensitive features like mobile payments.

That post has no concrete evidence (tests done with app/confirmation from samsung) and is pure speculation. Was posted on reddit as well. The article assumes that since Samsung Wallet doesn't work when the phone is rooted, it is most likely that Samsung Pay won't work either.

I can live with that.
Other paying methods like Google Wallet, PayPal with fingerprint and Vodafone Wallet are still working (although you have to use root hiding methods).
I do a lot online buying and pay by cash for gas...etc, so is not really affect me.
Was holding off root for to find our but I caved and rooted to disable tome apps and gain battery life. Many of us won't enjoy it then since we love custom roms and kernels. Someone may find a patch eventually

It depends on whether Samsung Pay functionality is broken only by root or by tripping Knox. If root, then unrooting or using a root blocker may restore functionality. If it depends on Knox, there is almost no hope.
If i root so samsung pay not working forewer ? What about when i unroot device ?

well i had softcard working on Note 3 with root and Xposed but it didnt always work and it appears that this is much deeper.
there is no root for my Verizon Edge yet so i dont have this decision to make but if i did i would probably wait and be sure.
I was anticipating this to be true but still holding out hope. Resisting the urge to root is killing me softly.
Unless Samsung Pay is the most important feature or reason for getting this device, this news is not newsworthy. I'm not going to stay unrooted for a feature I would probably never use. Pulling out the old plastic credit card and using that works every time and is accepted virtually everywhere. I may not be able to say the same for Samsung Pay.

THIS +1000 :good::good::good::good::good:
Did you REALLY get this phone to use it as a credit card?
And yeah, I don't believe much of what I read on SamMobile; when Samsung/ my CARRIER makes an OFFICIAL announcement, then I'll believe it..
Its the internet, remember, stop believing anything you read on it..
Wow that sucks for people who rooted. Samsung pay is pretty neat to have, considering it works just like plastic.
I'm totally on the same page as many here. Even if my phone had Wallet, Pay or some other app, I wouldn't use it--I'd pull out my credit card instead. The downside for me is that I've never kept a smartphone for over a year, and the prospect of listing one on swappa or ebay with broken features that will degrade the value of the device is pretty unattractive. And not rooting is not an option for me.
I also think newbs should be made aware of the consequences of rooting. I'm not worried about most of you guys because you know what you are doing.
Hmmm, lets see. Root is absolutely essential to me and I wont buy a phone that isn't root capable under any circumstances because I'd rather be kicked in the testicles every day as a wake up alarm than own a phone without it.
I've had nfc payments since they started and outside of a few purchases to try it out I haven't used it since. I don't find it any easier to pull out my cell phone than my wallet and half the time I leave the phone in the car anyways when I go in a store. Meanwhile I have to carry my wallet anyways which is filled with all manner of plastic.
I forgot what we were talking about, what was the question again?
Been using Google wallet at coffee shops , Wallgreens, etc. Pay is supposed to be capable of being used at any retail place with a magnetic credit card strip. Love to have the convenience. Anyway, there is much less bloatware on the Samsung S 6 so I think I can wait until further acknowledgement as far as if a developer can come up with a fix to use samsung pay once your phone is rooted which I'm sure will happen.

Samsung to deactivate remaining N7 phones?

Someone told me that Samsung will eventually 'disable' the remaining devices not turned in. Assuming this is true, I am guessing this could only be achieved by an OTA update disabling the phone? Any thoughts on how to prevent this assuming it's true?
They have the ability to do it yes, but haven't seen anywhere saying they would. Android Central had an article on this, but fell short of saying Samsung would, only that it's possible.

I'm not exchangjng my note 7 until I feel like I'm upgrading and not downgrading to the s7
I charge my phone before going to bed while it is in front of me. I do not charge it at night. I have also disabled the fast charging functions (both wired & wireless).
I use this phone almost all day..had it for 3 weeks now. Never observed it getting hot..forget abt hot..it didn't even got warm. Not sure abt others phones..but mine is good. Also, we need to know how the other phones blew up ? Did they root their phones & ran some crazy games or apps on their phones that constantly ran in the background leading to very high CPU usage & charging on op of it ?. If it were a wide spred issue & a defect with the design itself. Every phone should have been fired up by now. Not just one here & an other there.

I completely agree. I just got off the Phone with my AT&T representative from the customer service line ..she agreed that I could go do an exchange for the S7 edge now and next year when the new Samsung note 8 comes out or the S8 I can take the Phone in and upgrade without any penalty...
I told her that I upgraded to the note 7 because it was the newest phone and it would be a downgrade going to the S7... she agreed and I hope that this will work out

Me neither. I'd get it in writing or a note on your account.

i agree with both of you. I have her name/date/time i spoke with her. tomorrow when I go in I will have them
check the notes to confirm. i repeated everything back to her and she said she put it in the notes....
we shall see....
Let me get this straight... She said you could upgrade 2 times in one year without penalty? That doesn't sound right bro. I would double check that before going down to the S7

I agree fully with you. I repeated it back to her just for that reason.
What I told her was that ive been a loyal customer, full family plan with 4 phones, love the service, etc etc.
Said I upgraded to the best phone at the time, using my upgrade. Not my fault that the phone is defective and that Im being
forced to downgrade to a year old phone and one that I dont want. Said I purchased 2 wireless chargers, numerous accessories, my time and effort going the replacement route. All I want is a waiver of the upgrade whenever the phone I want comes out next year.
Doesnt seem too outrageous of a demand. For any of us. Isnt that what customer service is all about?
I hope so at least. Ill know tomorrow morning when I go in the store.

And you feel like you are safe? From what i read even turn off phone exploding. I don't want to scare anybody but... can you imagine that your kid play/talk on phone and phone explode/burn? OK. Not a kid/don't have kids, it is worth to keep a phone knowing that it my burn/explode any time in my pocket, hand etc? If it dose burn/explode in your face, hand, car etc., you will not win anything since there is so much buzz about and everybody has been warn. Yes i know i maybe dramatic but this is only phone and is not wort it to risk anything just for phone. Just my opinion. Choice is yours and only yours. Don't get me wrong but NO phone is worth it.
BTW Samsung can block IMEI and phone will be use less and i think that what they will do. You can block any software update and this will not help.
I believe he was playing on his phone and it was overheating and then he turned off his phone

My wife is chatting with an AT&T customer service person right now. This way we have it in writing. He has agreed that we can get the S7 Edge and then when the S8 we can then upgrade. I have the transcript of the chat, but I still don't know that I believe it myself.
That being said, I'm still going to turn these phones in and get the S7 Edge. My house burning down is not worth a cell phone, no matter how much I love it.

Do you think I can call the police to tell them that my co worker has a note 7 and that I am afraid for my life?
He has been charging the note all day! This is reckless endangerment.

Haha.. We on att.. We don't have support for our phones now.. It took damn near 6 months to get 6.0 on my last note 5..smh
Folks who r trying to hold on to Note 7..i suggest ibstalling 'Cooler Master' which monitors the Phone's temperature & alerts you if it detects heating up. Another app ' Full battery alert' alerts when the battery is full while charging. Just simple precautions. Both the apps are available on Playstore. Also do turn off 'Fast charging setting'.

Samsung galaxy note 7 might get another update

https://goo.gl/ILJFVq
On December 15, Samsung may release an update to Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in the US that would stop the phones' batteries from charging.
Bring it on.

Yep. They sure are. And yep, bring it on ? im keeping my note 7
I'm with note 7 all the way
Now they're saying December 19th. Is this similar to them talking about shutting down the IMEI on T-Mobile? Is it just an update or like an official shut down.

How will you avoid it? I still have mine as well.
What if u rooted it back to the original N7 rom.? I wonder. If it would effect it. I mean i got the pop up message to go away and i am currently writing this charging @ 73%. So i am curious it will effect those. Me and my wife got one during the 2 week window after the first recall. N now another update has has me wondering?

Why? Like seriously, why? It's a risk to your own safety and it's just going to get worse and worse. It will never get nougat since it is discontinued, it will not be getting any more development from here since most developers I assume have abandoning the device. You can't go on an air plane with the device. It's a risk to people around you. You can trade the device in for a phone that's just close the note 7 (the s7). Please, it's a dumb idea to keep it.

Dude, are you suffering a stroke or exposed to a gas leak?

not every phone was bad actually the percentage was rather small. We act like there are not other things in our daily life that could be dangerous but we still do it. Not everybody flies and if so they may have another phone they could use. Not everybody likes that god awful S7. Hey we are adults and if this is the risk we as adults want to take then so be it.
You have the right to not like it as others have the right to not want to get rid of it. Hell I still dont understand why people buy Iphones, why do people smoke cigarettes, why do people drink alcohol, etc.......
Those things can all kill ya...
